It is only appropriate during one of the most successful Homecoming Weeks ever, that the football team should be successful as well. Their 6-0 triumph was a fitting finale. Other successes included Hat Day and the day where students got the opportunity to violate the school dress code.
The great spirit of the Pep Rally must have had an inspirational effect on the triumphant Wolverines.
The week came to a climactic close with the sounds of Scaramanja at one of the loveliest homecoming dances ever .
The SENIOR SKIT was undoubtedly one of Homecoming Week's main highlights. The story revolved around a core of evil villains, the Leave Belen Organization (L.B.O.), who set out to DESTROY school spirit. Fortunately, the administration called on the unstoppable SPIRITBOOSTERS who saved the day. In the climactic concert scene, the
L.B O. is finally defeated and spirit and pride prevail. By the time the entire cast assembled on stage to perform the rousing number "Shout", the audience was on its feet. The great success of the skit was due to the devoted efforts of the Seniors, Philip Dembowski, Brian Wentzel, and Sigrid Bango.
Once again Belen's Tombola was uccessful in achieving all its goals. rough the fair's rides, the elicious food and the traditional omeroom uKiosko" we were able o overcome all obstacles and make he festival the best one in Belen's istory.
eople came from all different hools, families and different ackgrounds to enjoy Belen's amily atmosphere. Traditional eelings were found on the
Belen grounds through the Cuban food sold at the cafeteria, the fun and exciting games offered by different homerooms, and finally those who like to gamble- had the strip of ''Las Vegas" to seek adventure.
Besides the traditional, Belen brought back again the rides for everyone, young and old, to enjoy the thrills and twirls.
This year Tombola tickets boosted
off the Tombola season by bringing enthusiasm to all students. Belen was able to meet its goal. Belen again this year offered the car as the main winning prize and this year it was a Mazda 626.
Echoes would like to extend final thanks to the faculty, administration, student body and families whose combining efforts made everything possible for the success of the Tombola of 1985.

With the coming of the new school year, a promise was made by Belen's Student Council. This promise was for more dances, better dances, and a bigger variety of dances. By the end of the school year everyone could agree that they experienced the best dances Belen has ever had.
With new ideas such as a Video Dance, and a Ma querade Ball, the Belen crowd enjoyed a greater varie · of dances. To compliment these new forms of dance Belen kept their traditional ones, with a live band ar OJ playing in everyone. This year Belen also had ; Posed a major popband perform in the center pat while students danced the night away.

To live is to move on, to go forward, to look the future, to make projections, to program ahec: So far, what we are and what we have is good, b it could be better. Jesuit spirituality does not cea when a goal is reached. Jesuit spirituality is likE restless boy, jumping to and fro, like a bird glidi: from one branch to another, always looking ahe and not contemplating what we have acco J plished, but looking ahead at the things placed front of us and striving forward, AND WHJ MIGHT OUR DIRECTION BE?
To maximize the importance and the role religion in the lives of our students, their pare1 and the members of the Belen community. To i crease our relationship as a big family. To rna the new sixth grade a real part of, a real first st in Junior High. To continue the efforts towat the continuous growth of our sports facilities, a to consolidate our attainments thus far.
The main criterion of Jesuit spirituality is tl God is alive and He is with us, in the midst of that lives and grows.
Fr. Marcelino Garcia S.J. President, Belen Jesuit
Mr. Leopolda Nunez, Assistant Principal, Humanities 1, 2
To go one step beyond, to reach out a little further, to go where no man has gone before such is the spirit of man. Discoveries in all fields of human endeavor point to that special attitude that involves faith, self -discipline, knowledge, conviction and makes a man go beyond his limitations to tread new worlds, from the microcosms of the double-helix of DNA to the macrocosms of space travel.
To the class of '85, I say, strive forward as Belen has tried to strive forward from the cardboard facilities of the old school, to this continually growing new campus. Go forth with confidence on who you are and where you want to go. Be true to your convictions and do not allow the pressures of a weak world to dissuade you of your tracks. Be honest men of character and self-discipline, and you will always be able to go one step beyond. "This above all, to thine own self be true and it shall follow as the night the day ... " you will not then be false to any task, to any relationship, to any dream. Class of '85 reach for the stars, they await you!
Mr. Leo Nunez Assistant Principal
Physical Education has always been important, but facilities have been lacking . But Mr. Carlos Barquin, Athletic Director, has changed all this New projects have been in the making such as baseball fields, a swimming pool, a track field, and a gymnasium These will become a reality soon. The Belen Summer Camp is bigger and better this year as well. The new wrestling team, a junior varsity baseball team, and a golf club are also ne w steps towards a complete physical education program. "Life has taught me that the harder I work for something" says Coach Barquin, "the more I can appreciate the results. At Belen nothing comes easy." Thanks to this dedication, the program has gone "one step beyond."

This year, according to English Department Head Mrs Sigrid Bango, in trying to stay "one step beyond ," the seventh and eighth grade classes have been divided into groups of no more than ten to twelve students. This has enabled teachers to give closer individual attention to students and to stress more written work. An SRA reading comprehension program has also been added to the lower classmen 's curriculum in order to promote better comprehension. More students than ever have participated in the creative writing areas of the Youth Fair this year, and the Forensics (public speaking), Vincam (newspaper) , Echoes (yearbook) and popular "Senior Skit ," as well as Beta and Jr. Beta Clubs all come under the auspices of English Department moderators. "We already incorporate American, British and World Literature to the curriculum , as well as courses in the History of Art and Music , Philosophy, Speech and Drama, and Journalism," Mrs. Bango added Plans for the future include Honors Classes, smaller remedial classes and more electives in the department, including creative writing and photo-journalism.

Many new programs and ideas are planned for the future by the Modern Languages Department. Increasing participation in trips, contests, and fairs are characteristic of this year's goals The Language Festival, Noche de Teatro, and Creative Writing contests sponsored by the Dade County Youth Fair are among these events. "We also would like to recognize the student's achievements in different ways through student-of-month awards, special assemblies and so on" says Mr. Aurelio Baldor, Modern Languages Department Chairman. Other events that are a step beyond are possible trips to other countries, for the of developing an interest in Spanish and Latin American events Mr. Baldor states that "we want to make students aware of their heritage and cultural origin, which is really what education is all about."
For many years , the acqUisition of computers was a long term goal. This past year, the computers were finally obtained Consequently, this year the Mathematics Department introduced computers classes into the regular class schedule The students have been working hard to learn more about this newest technology. "I am amazed at how much the students have picked up concerning computer skills," says Mrs Carol Vila, Head of the Mathematics Department. "Kids who have never taken a computer class are designing difficult programs now." New ideas are being introduced, such as new, advanced courses for the upper and lower divisions, just one way Belen is taking "one step beyond."

We have to realize that teaching science is not the simple memorization of concepts and facts, therefore, trying to keep "one step beyond" is following the rational and the important approach that science and (echnology play vital roles in meeting society's needs. The fundamentals of science must be an important component of a student's general education. We try to achieve this goal in a way that the presentation of such goals should enable students to recognize the importance of basic scientific research and the application of scientific concepts to people's lives As Mr. Frank Pichardo, Chairman of the Science Department says, "Our main responsibility is to direct science and technology in such a way as to make the world a better and happier place to live."

This was the year of supreme advancement and fresh ideas in the field of Social Studies This year, juniors and seniors again traveled to Washington to participate in the Close-Up program , which attracted more students than ever before The Florida Close-Up program at Tallahassee also included many students from Belen. The juniors worked 7139 hours in campaigns for President Ronald Reagan and Presidential candidate Walter Mondale. As Mr Patrick Collins , head of the Social Studies, stated " One thing is to contribute time into a candidate's campaign, but another is to work 298 full days' worth." These students went one step beyond in contributing helpful man hours." New projects included the University of Miami Enterprise Contest , the Florida International University United Nations Celebration , and the Dade County Knowledge Bowl in which Belen placed in the top four schools of Dade County. The lower grades also participated in trips to the Dade County Courthouse and writing letters to other school students around the world, learning about their culture and their lives. Going one step beyond in the Social Studies Department is a reality at Belen , when so many programs are being offered to our students

Adolescence is a traumatic experience for many teenagers. Students have trouble coping with life and they feel the need to turn to drugs or alcohol for help Mr. Brian Wentzel and the Guidance Department are one step beyond this sensitive area of school life Mr Wentzel helps Belen students deal with emotional problems through personal counseling and special programs and activities. A new health class , the Life Management Program, is on the agenda for new programs, as well as new counsellors and a possible change in the academic curriculum of the school. " Another development that is being considered ," adds Mr. Wentzel , "is a SADD (Students Against Drunk Drivers) program Students are finding that artificial substances won ' t help them through life, but loving and car i ng will with the help of the Guidance Department "

Prayer is an important part of the student life at Belen and new changes have helped to enhance this idea A new course offered to the juniors and seniors , Christian Leadership, has helped to use skills they have learned to help teens at other schools like Interamerican and El Salvador New weekly prayer services have been introduced every Thursday in the Chapel. "Through them the students learn how to pray individually in a meditative way," comments Fr Eddy Alvarez , Chairman of the Theology Department Visits to convalescent homes with Fr Alvarez, Gerry Garcia, and Edurdo Blanco, all members of the Theology Department, enable them to learn what being a Christian entails.

Education doesn't stop after Belen , most graduates go on to college to continue their studies There is such a variety of colleges and universities that seniors and juniors have trouble deciding which to attend That is where the College Counselling Department comes in. Mrs. Charmaine Icaza, college counsellor, has started many new programs and activities to help the upperclassmen and their parents Mrs. Icaza has been involved with Catholic High School Counsellor meetings , the SACAC (Southern Association of College Admissions Counsellors), and the NACAC (National Association of College Admissions Counsellors) Among the activities that Belen has introduced are College Day, where 86 universities attended, the Financial Aid Workshop held for juniors and seniors and their parents, and the Jesuit College Night. One step beyond is important in life and good preparations for college and life afterwards are being introduced here and now
Academics is an integral part of student life at Belen, but the spirituality of a student is just as important. Counselling is a major area in which aids students to grow religiously. Fr Jorge Sardinia, Fr. Oscar Mendez, Fr. Eduardo Alvarez and Fr. Luis Ripoll offer aid to the seventh through twelfth graders through this counseling program. Another activity, the Encounter program, has helped both juniors and seniors in discovering God ilS well as themselves. This three day retreat includes a variety of activities in which Belen students share a tremendous experience along with students from Pace High School. Also, retreats are offered to the underclassmen, keeping all the school one step beyond in religious unity and prayer.

This was the y e ar the Wolverines decided to change things around in football. They finished with an impressive 6-4 record, making it the second winning football season in Belen history
It was a long and hard road to the end of the season, but it was all well worth it. Training for the season was started in January with the spring weight training session. This training
consisted of weight lifting and running and lasted until May. Again in June, the weight training was continued. All players were required to attend three times a week until August Because of these extensive conditioning programs the team was looking bigger and stronger than was anticipated The season opener against Gulliver was as exciting as everyone thought it
would be. It is match up that us end s up in overtime, and this yea no exception The Wolvei defeated them in overtime 7-6 losing to La Salle , we satisfie d hunger for victory by defeating s om (12-10) , Pace (7-6) , and Christian (3-0) The record was 4-1.

Because of all the players that moved up to varsity, Coach Gonzalez had to make the best with what he had Even though the record was not impressive, it gave the players game-like experience and discipline The team was led by quarterback Jose Cil and linebacker Mario Rodriguez.

The Cross-Country team once again finished a very successful season undefeated . But this was no easy task. The team started practicing early in the summer with hard workouts. The team was optimistic that they would succeed in becoming not only Dade County Champions but State Champions as well.
The team was led by senior co-captains, Eric Alvarez and Luis Planas, along with junior Richard Torra, sophomore Nilton Gonzalez, and freshmen, Fernando Calvo and Naldo Gonzalez.
Their quest as Dade County Champs was threatened for a moment by Columbus. The Wolverines were tied with them, two victories apiece, entering the Dade County Cross-Country Championships on October 20. Eric's first place finish managed to fulfill the team's dream of being Dade County Champs.
In the Conference and District Cham pionships, Belen easily defeated all their opponents. In the Conference Meet, they showed their total domination by placing Eric, Luis, Fernando, Naldo, and Richard on the All-Conference team.
At the State Meet, Belen was only defeated by the extremely talented Jacksonville Bolles. But Eric proved who was number one individually by winning his second straight State Meet. The Wolverines finished the season as proud State Runners-up.
For next year, the outlook is once again very good. Although the team will be losing its two best runners, Eric Alvarez and Luis Planas, Coach Barquin will be back again with another determined team .

As usual, the Junior High Cross Country team had another successful season finishing second in 6 of the 9 Invitationals, and never worse then third place. The biggest thrill of the season was the All Catholic Championship, in which they ended up in second place.
The Baby Wolverines were led by eighth grader Marco Garcia with the best time of the team (9:05). Coming in third and fourth were the two clutch seventh grade runners Tony Munoz, (9:26) and Luis Suarez (9:54) . Luis Suarez came third in the Dade County Youth Fair Invitational where the Baby Wolverines came in third place. The rest of the team was also well rounded out with other strong runners such as Robert Suarez, Alex Tunon, Enrique Serrano, and Alex Abril.

In only its second year, the Wolverines swim team, led by coach Jessy Vasallo emerged as District champions. This year, the team was led by five state finalist: Joe and John Zumpano, JorgeBaste, Henry Artelejo, and George Cinca. This years team, which went 8'-1, looks optimistically towards a championship season next year as all veterans return
As a first year team, the Wolverines' wrestling team did tremendously well. With the leadership of Head Coach Carlos Barquin, state champion in college, the Wolverines finished 8-2. They had decisive victories over Ransom and Curley. The victory at Curley was the highlight of the season
since it was Coach Barquin's former school and team.
This year's team was led by four Regional semi-finalists: Angelo Longo unl. (13-2), Manny Portuondo 145 lbs. (7-0), Albert DeCardenas 108 lbs. (93), and Daniel Garrido 188 lbs. (6-1).
Since only two seniors are
leaving the team next year, Manny Portuondo and Daniel Garrido, the team is expected to do better next year with a tougher and more competitive schedule. Returning prospects include: Albert Gross, Angelo Longo, Albert DeCardenas, and Joel Mendez.
Coach Ruben Marrero and his squad finished this year's season with a record of 18-9. The team came on strong but finished off the season in a disappointing manner. This Wolverine team was a young one, composed of only 5 Seniors . Highlights in the season came when Belen beat Coral Park and Miami Springs consecutively, the first time in history we have defeated a 4-A team. The team went on to place second in the Columbus
Holiday Tournament. The rema i nder of the season brought with it 9 losses, most of which were caused by inexperience and a lack of a killer instinct. Belen was led this year by First- Team All County performer Emilio Marrero. He averaged 19 .5 points a game even though sidelined by an ankle injury in the latter part of the season. Arnie Paniagua was second in scoring with 18 a game. Jose Mola was the leading assist man on this
squad . Tony Franyie, Jorge Mora, and Luis Diaz all made strong contributions throughout the year . Luis Valladares and Ralph Prohias were Seniors who provided much needed depth off the bench.
The team returns about 10 players to next year's team Potential seems to be great for the team if they put in the proper work and maintain the proper attitude throughout the season .
This year's J.V. Wolverines saw the leaving of five starters and the arriving of a new coach. Pedro Pena became coach of a very young, inexperierH!ed team. The team practiced long and hard in preparation for the season. A passing and motion offense helped the team to do the best with what they had.
Bertot, Manny Hadad, and Marcos Gonzalez . The team faced tough losses against Curley, Pace, and Columbus; but did very well in conference competition. The team is expected to strengthen for next year and with one year under the young team's belt, and the coaching of Pedro Pena, the team will be certain to prosper.

5. Ern goes up again.
Considering the fact that only two of last year's starters returned this year, the team used the season to provide the younger players with some valuable experience and play time. The season didn't live up to the team's high expectations as they finished the season with a disappointing 4-13 record.
The season began with a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to Dade Christian 2-1. The team did show signs of talent as goalie Tony Abella thrilled the fans with dramatic saves.
Halfbacks, Ignacio Duarte and the Lorenzo brothers, controlled the pace very well.
After suffering several losses to the likes of Gulliver, Pine Crest, and Ransom-Everglades, the team defeated Pace 4-1 The team then provided a tough challenge to Curly and PACE. The team ended their season with an impressive vic-
tory against Pace winning 1-0. The entire team showed signs of talent: Emilio Roldan scored the game's only goal, and halfbacks Duarte, Joe Lorenzo, and Diaz-Asper controlled the game's pace, and the defense of Carlos Muniz, and goalie Tony Abella shot the Spartans out.
In the districts, the team obtained their most fantastic and exciting victory of several seasons as they were down 3-0 with 15 minutes left and won the game 4-3 on a winning shot by Emilio Roldan with 30 seconds remaining.
Despite the disappointing season, the team did show signs of talent and good play in their
younger players. The loss of keeper, Tony Abel Sweeper, Carlos Muniz, halfback, Ignacio Dua and Orlando Lopez, as well as forwards, Rold and Pola will be felt, but the likes of Joe and R: Lorenzo add talent and hope for next year's soo season.

The 1984-85 tennis season was the best season a Wolverine Tennis team has ever experienced The team finished with a record of 15 wins and 3 losses The team included: Hector Ortiz, Luis Iglesias, Julio Trias, Carlos Torres de Navarra, and Jorge Bisbal. With no seniors on the team, the 1984-85 Belen Tennis team will be back for the 1985-86 season.
Belen came in third place at the Gulfstream Athletic Conference Tournament. At the Tournament, Hector Ortiz won the number one position in singles and teamed with Luis Iglesias to win the number one position in the doubles Julio Trias was the runner-up at the number three position.
Belen came in second place at the District BAA Tournament. For the first time in ten years, Belen won three positions Hector Ortiz won the number one singles and teamed with Luis Iglesias to win the number one doubles Julio Trias won first place at the number three position and teamed with Carlos Torres de Navarrez to finish second in the number two doubles. Luis Iglesias, Carlos Torres de Navarrez, and Jorge Bisbal reached the semifinals of their division
Also for the first time, Belen was represented at the Florida State High School Tennis Tournament for AA schools Hector Ortiz finished in the top four singles players in the state Hector Ortiz and Luis Iglesias then teamed to become state runner-ups in the boy's number one doubles position.

Throw it, I dare you.
Although the Wolverines had the first losing season in years, this team was not as talented as many of the other teams before. There were many reasons for the disappointing season, such as a tough schedule, which included the 3A State Champions Pace, and powerhouses Westminster, Curley and St. Brendan.
The team was led by Junior Tony Franyie with a team leading .385 batting average and a winning record in pitching. Franyie was honored by being named First Team All-Dade County and First Team All-Conference. Senior Oscar Benitez was another helping factor with a .313 batting average;
he too was honored by being named First Team All-Conference. But the real leadership was under the wings of Seniors Alex Adams and Emilio Roldan, who both had hefty batting averages as well. The other influential players were Javier Mariscal, Hector Tunidor, Ace Leroy Hernandez, Jose Sanchez, Robert Perez-Abreu, and Albert Gutierrez
The 1985 Wolverine baseball team had only 3 seniors playing, so it is obvious that the 1986 team will be devastating. Next year's baseball team will be shooting for state.
The Belen 1985 Track Team was filled with many new exciting events. After long time coach Carlos Barquin had worked up and built the track team to its present status, he retired as Head Coach. The team didn't miss a beat, however, as new Head Coach Phil Dembowski and As-
sistant Coach Tom Drexler took charge of the team and ended the with a 9-2 record and a solid second place finish in the Conference ME Belen's track team was led by constant first place finishes from SUf Eric Alvarez. Other contributions to the team were made by Luis F Danny Garrido, Albert Gross, Jorge Garcia, Fernando Calvo, and Sague. Belen also had several Conference Champions and Eric Alvare a State Championship. Belen's prospects look even better for the
since only a few seniors are graduating and nearly the whole team VI main in tact.

Officers of this year's National Honor Society put great effort in increasing involvement in District Affairs and service-oriented activities. Club Sponsor Mrs. Carol Vila, President Xavier Briggs, Vice-President Juan Ros, Secretary Ignacio Duarte, and Treasurer Carlos Alberto Muii.iz were determined to make membership much more than a purely honorary distinction.
National Honor Society members participated in various community service projects. For instance, a private after-school tutoring program was offered to students in need. Many members also volunteered in helping run the March Special Olympics.
Overall, the year was characterized by a greater commitment to service and a strong organization that will hopefully make next year even more successful.

In its third year of existence, Key Club continued its upward climb to success and achievement. The club has contributed over 3000 hours of service and $5000 to benefit home, school, and community. With 74 active members, Key Club is the school's largest organization. Much credit must be given to the club's second year officers: President Robert Pupo, Vice-President Thomas Jelke, Corresponding Secretary Rolando Fernandez, Recording Secretary Erick Deeb, and Treasurer Ralph Prohias. The officers, however, agree that Key Club would not be as successful as it is without its driving force, Advisor Maria Hernandez.
Key Club is one of the most engaging clubs in the school. It has undertaken such projects as: a medicine drive for the impoverished people of the Dominican Republic, a fatherson activity day, visits to the Children's Home Society, participation in activities aiding such organizations as the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Project Concern, and the Cerebral Palsy Association. Finally, Key Club had the distinction of sponsoring the most successful school dance ever. This record breaking dance featured disc-jockeys from radio station 1-95 as well as a concert by pop group X- Posed.

The Thinker discussion group, in its second year , set out to expand membership and activities. Regular meetings were held by a small band of seniors and the club moderator. Activities included a directed imagery session, visits to an Indian restaurant and a T.M. lecture as well as discussions of Jung, mysticism, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Gibran's The Prophet , Ginsberg's " Howl" and the Beat Generation. Videotaped films of the Shroud of Turin and Buddhism and Christianity were also shown. The members and moderator would like to thank Father Ripoll, Mr Brian Wentzel, and Mrs. Sigrid Bango for their continuous support and enthusiasm.
This year the Belen Student Council was able to take upon the added responsibility of serving the student councils of the state of Florida as President of the Florida Association of Student Councils, a distinction which has only been achieved once before in the history of Belen Student Council.
In addition to this accomplishment, we were successful in holding an average of one dance per month, incorporating various themes including the Belen Video Dances which broke money making records as far as Student Council was concerned. The other successful events inCluded the pep rallies which could be characterized as "extravaganzas" in that $40,000 sports cars, limousines and even a helicopter were used. We were also responsible for the establishment of the Senior Lounge.
We had a Senior-Seventh grader program, a first in Belen history, where the Seniors were each given 3 seventh graders to guide through the first few days of school. It was truly an enriching and memorable experience for both classes.
In light of the Student Council's accomplishments during the past year, our hope is that this success will serve as a springboard for future councils to come.

The Belen Christian Youth Gr01 had a vigorous year under t leadership of President Carl Muniz and Moderator Father Alvarez. T j club looks forward to another year Christian service.
"I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was s i ck and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me "Then the Lord said, 'you who did this will go to eternal life'."
It is difficult to assess any kind of progress when one deals with spiritual development. This cannot be evaluated using the traditional tools that have been established for this purpose. What we can do is take a good look at the different opportunities the school has provided for each individual's spiritual growth. That is what our department does. We are a catalyst; we provide opportunities for a loving encounter between God and our students.
This year we have indeed gone one step beyond. We have incorporated the concept of peer ministry to our program by establishing a course for juniors and seniors, "Christian Leadership." Thanks to this peer ministry program we've been able to reach out to greater numbers of our students in retreats, prayer services and other liturgies.
Our involvement in social-work activities has been augmented. As in the past we've continued our visits to Camillus House, but this year, we've begun to take our students once a week to visit a a Nursing Horne in our area and to the Krome Detention center. The whole school community became involved in our "Hunger Day" this year and it was more successful than ever.
All in all, our department strives to do its part in the formation of Men For Others, for the greater glory of God.

land. A modern building library, locker rooms, basketb; court, tennis court, an auditorium. Due to this succe: greater enrollment and particiF tion are expected at the upcomiJ session.
Thanks to the dedicated and inspiring work of is moderator Mrs. Lourdes Moller-Gomez, the Belen newspaper Vincam has developed into a polished professional publication. This year the Vincam staff produced four issues and dealt with such topics as Student Council news, special events, new faculty information, club activities, entertainment reviews and controversial editorials. All major sports events were featured. As added features the Vincam staff produced a Homecoming Magazine and Mrs. Gomez personally added to the Sports Banquet by creating a terrific memento -a complete sports magazine round-up of the year. As a fellow publication the Yearbook staff wishes to commend the Vincam on a job well done!

This year's Fiesta Latina far superseded all others in the past. The temperature was ideal and the food chicken, con-gri and platanos en tcnfacion was pronounced delicious.
Mrs. Lucila Jimenez, one of the chief organizers of the Fiesta, said everything was simply fabulous and the $17,441.80 raised at the party went to a very worthy cause -BELEN!
Belen is proud of its achievements in athletics. On May 16, the Annual Sports Banquet was held at the Airp Hilton. The prosperity of a countr depends, not on the ·abundanc of its revenues, nor on

On a night as important as Graduation itself, the senior class got together in the Church of the Little Flower in St .Theresa. They met there for their Graduation Mass. The seniors proceeded into the church with their mothers on their arms to begin the ceremony. The mass was enhanced by the
wonderful singing of Coral Cubana.
As in other graduation masses, a graduation cap was takE up with the offertory gifts. This mass was made specie however, because of a lovely poem written by Mrs. Bacarc Coco Argamasilla' s grandmother. The poem, read by Irn Abella, brought the ceremony to a beautiful ending.
1. I worked for this says Tony Abella.
2. Coco and Raul proudly show their rings.
3. We are the light of the world.
At the beginning of the nigh the Seniors were extremely ne vous. Some of them had bee waiting for over 5 years l receive their rings and the waiting was about to come to a end.
As the ceremony commence( the nervousness turned inl happiness. The seniors enjoye one of the most memorable e> periences of their years in Beler They finally carne to realiz how this ceremony was specia They learned that it was mot than just an event where the would get their long-awaite rings. It was also the first c many times the Senior would be united in an out-oJ school activity.
By the end of the night, th seniors proudly showed oJ their brand new rings. They had endured the Ion wait and won their prize. Bt reality finally dawned on then They now understood that th Ring Ceremony was the beginr ing of the end of Senior
Throughout a student's years in Belen, he dreams of one special day. Graduation Day is very special to a student, but mostly to a Belen student . This is the day that student can feel a great sense of accomplishment. This graduation was not to be an exception; with pride in their hearts, but tears in their eyes, the Belen Seniors said farewell to their High School years and looked forward to a more than promising future.
FREEDOM is the KEYSTONE of SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. MATURITY is the STAGE of LIFE in which a PERSON develops the ABILITY to KNOW WHEN, HOW, and WHERE he can make USE of his FREEDOM. Neither an INDIVIDUAL a GROUP can THINK of BEING ABSOLUTELY free even in a free society. DEMOCRACY can SUBSIST only with the RESPONSIBLE COOPERATION of MATURE citizens. Even a
DEMOCRATIC society has the NECESSARY limitations REQUIRED by the CONSTITUTION, LAWS, SOCIAL NORMS, to PROTECT the RIGHTS of ALL CITIZENS and PROMOTE SOCIAL LIFE. JESUIT FORMATION does really EXIST when a GRADUATE has learnt HOW to BEHAVE in social life as a MATURE ADULT: How to COMPLY with the SOCIAL NORMS of his own Institution
without being REFRAINED just by FEAR of PUNISHMENT A MATURE adult, even in a group, would never say: Let us do that · -which is NOT permittedBECAUSE NOW "THEY" can do NOTHING to STOP us FREEDOM, MATURITY, RESPONSIBILITY are CORNERSTONES of JESUIT EDUCATION, and BASIC CONDITIONS of ADULT LIFE in a civilized society

As we look back on the 1984-85 school year in Belen, we can agree that it was one of the best in the school's history. Not only did the school excel in academics and service, but it showed great improvement in its sports program. This year the Wolverine football ' team accomplished a great feat by going 6 and 4, their first winning season in 5 years. Not to be outdone, the basketball team posted one of their highest records ever and easily made it to the District Playoffs. The tennis team unbelievably improved their record as all-star Hector Ortiz was voted into the all-Dade team. Eric Alvarez . helped the, Cross Country and Track teams with his all-State speed. Even the newest sport, Wrestling, introduced to Belen this year, was
very successful. Belen easily defeated other teams that had years of experience. Surely Belen sports lock promising for the future!
This was also a good · year for Belen clubs.
The Key Club emerged at the state level by having Peter Quiros elected Lieutenant Governor. They also brought Belen one of its best dances ever by having pop group X-Posed perform live. Student Council also some ground-shaktng dances to Belen. Among these was a video dance. With over 1,800 people attending, B- TV was a huge success. Student Council also showed their presence at the state level by ruling over the FASC (Florida Association of Student Councils). BASES had one of its most prosperous years with several new
members joining each of the different branches. All in all, Belen clubs flourished tremendous! y.
With respect to spirituality, the Campus Ministry Department has developed extensive programs in retreats, special masses, encounters and even a new Confirmation Ceremony, as well as a new class on Christian Leadership. Students again went to Santo Domingo to offer their help to the poor and needy. Along with all this, a new Tabernacle was put in the chapel. Other additions to the school include 3 new sixth grade classes and a bigger, better summer camp.
The Seniors said their goodbyes in a beautiful ceremony highlighted by one of the most moving speeches ever given by a Belen V aledictorian; Xavier Briggs.
We tried to go a step beyond this year, and to quote Xavier, uso it has been a time to look back, in joy and not regret, and a time to remember that soon, very soon, it will be time to set new goals and scale a few more mountain tops."
