The Belen of 1982-83 began its new school year with a record enrollment of 712 students -a far cry from the small Belen group crammed into a classroom on the fourth floor of Gesu School in 1961. After years of growing pains Belen has augmented its athletic facilities to include a football field and baseball field, and projects the building of a new and spacious gymnasium within the near future. A new swim team is projected for the fall, ting the already functioning football, basketball, cross-country, tennis, baseball, and track and field teams. The new chapel, undergoing final polishing touches, is of daily masses offered to the Belen ·ty. Spiritual projects also include retreats, encounters, days of • eminars for parents which values. There's something' for all who look, There's a story in every book All of the pages, between all of the lines, So much that you can find ...
And there's times when I can't contain
All the feelings of love I'll gain It's there for the asking, It's for all of us
If you would take it too ...

Thank you, Coach Hewitt for your dedication, inspiration, service and friendship You will always be a part of the Belen family.

From the facilities of makeshift a seventh avenue corner to our current multi-million dollar campus, a physical reality pointing towards what can only become a showcase of what a modern high school campus should be. From the limitations of the past, to the ever-increasing awareness that Belen is already on its way towards becoming an example of Jesuit Education in the South.
In twenty-two years Belen has moved from a type of borrowed quarters in exile at Gesu Church to our present facility How many human communities can boast such an achievement in such a short period of time? The success of Belen has been so thanks to the close cooperation and common goals of the Jesuit community which continues to offer its best towards the achievement of common goals. Belen continues to and develop its potenhal in the present: a potential that without a doubt, leads towards an extraordinary future.

Many times I have hea parents say "My boy is n good in science, he was n born with that capacity." Tr tends to be a justification fm bad grade and sometimes the is the implication that t: teacher has to be more lenie with such a student. Communication is an essential objective of any language instruction At Belen we understand, however, that communication in a language must go hand in hand with a study of its culture We aim at developing in our students the ability to communicate in more than one language and know the culture, history, and ideals of the country's language also. In our multicultural society this is a challenge all of us must face. Knowing the culture of others as well as our own will bring a better understanding of all groups, and, hopefully, all of us working together will aim for a better and more harmon iou s wa y o f life , based on tru s t, respect and kn owledge of each other
English is taught on both the pragmatic and the ideal level. Pragmatically, students are taught to read more comprehensively and communicate more effectively in both speaking and writing skills. Ideally, through the study of different aspects of literature, the student begins to reflect, synthesize his own values, and learns to know himself better. With greater self-knowledge comes heightened awareness and actualization of all his potentials. Only after a student actualizes his own potential can he begin to become a better and more influential world citizen.
Macbeth
William Shakespeare' s Macbeth is a powerful drama of a man whose weakness firs1 brought him power , then defeat. As a play for acting , it outdistances most because of it! admirable construction and its many scenes that are theatrically powerful as well as in· herentl y dramatic The story is based on historical fact ; Shakespeare adapted it from twc episodes related in a contemporary history book , Holinshed's Chronicles (!577), a wor• frequently used by Shakespeare for his history plays Macbeth was probably written iD 1606 as a tribute to James I , who traced his ancestry to the Scottish nobleman Banquo Alive with the passions of eleventh-century Scotland, yet timeless in its impact, Macbeth is one of the most gripping of Shakespeare's tragedies.

Expressing oneself clearly, coherently, and effectively, not only in speaking but in writing, is one of the great goals of an English teacher. There is much potential in every Belen student and our job is to actualize that potential by challenging each pupil to his utmost ability.

Theology
This year the department of Campus Ministry offered a great many spiritual activities to the members of the Belen community. There were daily masses and each homeroom attended mass as a group once a month Four Belen teachers became Eucharistic Ministers to better serve the Belen community. We offered eight days of reflection, four retreats and two encounters for the junior class. One morning of reflection was given to the faculty by Father Jim Fetcher. Two nights of reflection were also given to the parents during Holy Week. There were two outdoor masses in the football field and a very good Hunger Day liturgical celebration. Every Friday a group of students went to the Camillus House in the downtown area to serve food to the poor. There were several private masses before sports events and each morning the prayer in school was said by different menbers of the Campus Ministry team. We have begun to really actualize our spiritual potential!

This year the College Counselling Office sponsored a College Day with fifty schools represented for juniors, seniors, and their parents; a financial aid workshop for seniors and their parents; a Jesuit Fair for sophomores and juniors, and a series of four seminars for the seniors of Belen and Carrollton to help prepare them for going on to a co-ed institution. In order to help with career counselling, the juniors took the Act Career test during second semester. Many students were placed in universities all around the United States and several students won scholarships both in Miami and out of state. All 1983 graduates will be attending colleges in the fall!

Social Studies
For one specific example of how students at Belen can actualize potential in the social studies department, the '83 juniors and several seniors put forth an amazing 2,851 hours of volunteer work in the 1982 Congressional, state, and local elections. In several campaigns these students of Belen made up the mainstay of a candidate's race and through their tireless efforts they made a real difference.
The principles of democracy are well protected when so many students live, and not just study, partid patory democracy.

I hope my students remember how much I have emphasized in my classes, both from a theoretical and practical viewpoint, how important it is to actualize potentials. All human beings have potentials, they are gifts from God. Sometimes they are called vocations. The important thing is to actualize, to put into effect those gifts for the good of other fellow human beings and for the glory of God. That is how communities and societies function better and how individual true happiness is going to be found!

SPIRITUAL LIFE HUNGER DAY
We at Belen feel that the purpose of education is to enhance the students' development, not only intellectually and psychologically, but also spiritually The Department of Campus Ministry seeks to provide experiential moments which are geared to the spiritual growth of our community. Our goal is to set the stage for a meaningful encounter between MAN and GOD, so that knowing God and feeling Him as an active force in our lives, we may then set out to live His message of Love by caring for one another.
Aside from a number of retreats, encounters and days of reflection that we've experienced this 1,ear, the Belen community, responding to a plea from Archbishop McCarthy, sponsored a "Hunger Day' during which we voluntarily fasted and donated our lunch money to help the poorest diocese in Haiti, Port-dePai. Moreover, on a weekly basis we have taken students to "Camillus House" to help in distributing food to the hungry and jobless of our area
"If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and no food for the day and you say to them 'Good luck and Good-bye!' but do nothing to meet their bodily needs, what good is it? So it is with the faith that does nothing in practice. It is thoroughly lifeless." (James 2, 15-17)
The Department of Campus Ministry seeks to help the Belen Community make its faith come alive in the service of others.

The Modern Language Fair of 1983 was a great success due to tbe effort, cooperation, and dedication of all those who worked so hard for so many weeks. This year we saw outstanding projects showing a tremendous amount of originality and creativity on part of the exhibitors. Posters and slogans helped to give color and taste of the Hispanic and French cultures during the Fair. Our students wrote excellent poems, short stories and essays in Spanish. The Spelling Bee Contest was fought very hard in all grades and Belen Students did perform outstandingly in reading, theatre, creative writing and exhibits at the Dade County Youth Fair. The Open House on Thursday night filled the patio with the sounds of Spanish and French music and excellent dramatic performances in Spanish and comic French Skits were presented.
Modern Language Fair
This year we observed a great enthusiasm on part of the students and an extraordinary response to the different activities of the Fair. We were very proud of the honors obtained by our Spanish and French students at the Dade County Youth Fair. Next year's Fair promises to be our most ambitious and we are looking forward to a very challenging and rewarding Festival.

The first annual Math Fair at Belen was a roaring success. With the he of Ms. Rosas-Guyon who promoted the idea, everything went ve : smoothly. The student response was overwhelming! Students had the o portunity to explore many interesting subjects such as math anxiet origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, and "tangrams." There we scores of projects based on various aspects of computer science, reflectir the students' awareness of today's "high-tech" society. The juniors did fine job of providing posters advertising and promoting what Fath Figueredo described as a "historic event" at Belen. The students certain showed their interest, creativity and love of mathematics. We look fo ward to next year's fair- another fine tradition at Belen has begun!

Close-Up 1983
Washington D.C. was our destination in order to experience and understand the American governmental process. A group of 17 juniors and 2 seniors visited our country's capital city with other Miami and Shreveport, La. area students.
This was an intense week of lectures, workshops, and seminars on our government. Although we worked very hard, we did find some time to enjoy the snow and the company of the only ingredient missing in our school, girls. The trip made us aware of the greatness of our democratic government and those that are dedicated to it.
We would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Pat Collins for his help and support in making the Close Up trip possible in our school.

Homecoming 1983
The week of November 15th through the 20th was Homecoming at Belen and what a homecoming it was! The festivities began on Monday with Spirit Day. All of the students came dressed in the traditional blue and gold colors and the Homecoming jerseys were worn by all of the seniors. They were sold to the rest of the student body the following day. Later that afternoon the students gathered in the football field to watch the infamous senior-faculty softball game. A good time was had by one and all as the faculty managed to narrowly defeat the seniors 6-0.
Tuesday had been designated as Hat and Jean Day, and every type of hat imaginable could be seen in the school. This was followed by Movie Day. Laughter could be heard throughout the hallways as the students were treated to the presentation of II Airplane.''
Thursday was eagerly awaited as the seniors would present their skit. It dealt with the improvement of school spirit, as is traditional, and featured a dying "Spirito" as the protagonist. Many students and teachers were present in the auditorium several times this day to view the skit more than once. The hard work put in by the senior class as well as Mrs. Bango's direction o btained a terrific response from the audience. It was so successful that an encore performance was given later that night for family and friends.
On this same day the Cross Country team was honored for its incredible 13-0 record on the season.
Friday was Student Activities Day j classes competed against each other i various exciting events. The upperclassmE were involved in competitions such i balloon toss, free-throw shooting, and bo1 bing for apples. Everyone seemed to ha' had a great time, and the winnir homerooms would be treated t refreshments by the school. It ended with rowdy pep-rally in the center patio whic featured the Belen band Power Play chee ing on the football team for its b: homecoming game. The 1982-83 basketba team was introduced as they prepared f< the upcoming season.
The week reached its climax on Saturda with the game and the dance. The scho1 walls were covered with banners expressin spirit from everyone, and the dance was tremendous success. Although the mighi Wolverines lost to the Marathon Dolphir in a close game, the spirit of the school co1 tinued to promote good feelings amon everyone. The dance began with a sit-dow dinner and picked up from there with tr great music of "Wildlife." Both students an teachers alike crowded the dance floor < one of the Omni International's banqw halls and boogied the night away. The grei feelings of spirit and unity within the enti1 school was evident from Monday morning show of colors to Saturday night's fun at tr dance. Belen's Homecoming '82 was tremendous success and will be lon remembered as such in the memory of a those involved.

"Whatss Happenin?" was one of the many expressions that resound throughout this year's Senior Skit, which was thought by many to be the b skit ever. The plot revolved around the apparent death of Spirit along w Belen's effort to revive him by staging a telethon and bringing in an inten tional crew of "world renowned physicians ." Much to our chagrin, howe1 the efforts were of no avail. The only thing that finally did revive Spirit WI pledges of cooperation, participation and enthusiasm from the students their school, Belen.

This year the Belen students got an opportunity to get involved in a high pressure, much publicized political campaign, which is something that many high school students miss out on. Thanks to Mr. Patrick Collins, our government and U.S. history teacher, who worked tirelessly during the campaign, the Belen students got wrapped up in Dante Fascell's bid for the U.S. House of Representatives. Our student body supporters worked long hours in the candidate's office as well as energetically sweeping through Miami distributing Fascell propaganda. After a heated campaign with Glenn Rinker, Fascell rose to the occasion and won the election, much to the delight of our school's campaign supporters. The whole experience was very enriching because it enabled our students to interact and work with others in a pressure filled political environment. The ECHOES staff and the Belen community would like to thank Representative Fascell for his help and cooperation, and we wish him all the success possible in Washington .

Cross Country '83
The 1982 Belen Cross Country team began its quest for the elusive state championship earlier than its predecessors, for they knew that if they were going to bring Belen its first state championship, they would have to put in that extra mileage.
The first pre-season poll had the Wolverines rated #1 in the state. On September 9th the team, determined to live up to its# 1 billing, defeated Curley and St. Brendan for its first two dual meet victories. The Wolverines' first real test against strong competition came on September 14 when they faced perennial 2A power Ransom-Everglades, then ranked #3 in the state at the Ransom Invitational. The Wolverines defeated Ransom but finished a disappointing 4th behind 4A powers Killian, Miami Lakes and Homestead.
The Wolverines then bounced back to win six straight dual meets. On October 1 Belen competed in the North Miami Invitational. The team did very well this time defeating both Miami Lakes and Homestead. Belen went on to defeat arch-rivals Lasalle and Westchester Cpristian before facing the second major test against 2A competition in the first annual Wolverines-Sunblazers Invitational at FlU The team again proved equal to the test by defeating its closest competitor by 65 points.
On October 14th the Wolverines won their second straight invitational by defeating 2nd place Pahokee by 15 points at Clewiston. On October 16th Belen faced the state 2nd ranked team, Gainesville's P. K. Yonge and lost narrowly by 5 points. In late October with the season slowing down, the team went to the University of Florida Invitational for a rematch with P. K. Yonge. This time, led by Eric Alvarez' school record performance of 15:32 for the three-mile course, the Wolverines emerged victorious by 90 points. On October 25th the team defeated Ransom and Pinecrest to wind up with a record of 13-0, the team's 3rd undefeated dual meet season in four years.
On November 4th the Wolverines earned their 4th conference championship in a row. The team then , aimed for its 8th District title in 9 years, but it was not to be, as Ransom defeated Belen by the narrow margin of 4 points.
Finally, the Wolverines, on Nov. 20th, ventured up to Deland with high hopes of bringing back the state troph:y:. But, despite great efforts by Juan Alvarez, Eric Victor Hugo Emthano Herrar, Lewts Planas and Juan Sanchez, the team fell 7 p01nts short of v1ctory.
In closing, it is important to note that even though the Cross Country team will be losing 5 outstanding runners - Hugo Montiel, Juan Sanchez, Victor Gutierrez, Roger Ribas and Alex Rodriguez, there are still high hopes that the '84 Wolverines may bring Belen its first state championship led by All-State runners Juan and Eric Alvarez. Others returning will be Luis Planas, Emiliano Herran, Teddy Sanchez, Richard Torra and up-and-coming Javier Beltran.

J. V. 's Winning Season!
The J.V. Football Team ended the 1983 season with a very successful 5-win and 2-loss record. The team beg with a major disappointment back in August when only 20 players showed up for summer practice. Four m< players were added before the first game for a grand total of 24 In the first game against Gulliver, the Wolverii pulled out a 6-zip win on a pass from Q.B. Angel Navarro to Alex Adams. The game was marred by penalti mistakes and first game jitters. In the next game they put it all together by crushing Coral Shores 20-0. In l following game against Football Power Pine Crest, the J.V . suffered their first defeat, a heartbreaking 14-12 ov time loss. With a couple of breaks going for the Wolverines the game could have easily been a Belen Victory. 1 next 3 games included a 6-0 win over Marathon, a 41-0 blowout of Ransom, and a tough 6-0 loss to the Lasalle V sity . The last game ended with the Wolverines destroying the Warriors of Westminster 6-0 to end the season at 2). The outlook on next year's Varsity looks very bright, with J.V. players like Alex Adams, Henry Sori, An ; Navarro, Oscar Benitez, Luis Mendez, Manny Aly, and T. Tejera, just to name a few.

Basketball
The 1982-83 Belen Basketball Team had a very unique season. The unpredictable Wolverines underwent a series of ups and downs that is unparalled in the last few years. Thanks to the appreciated dedication of Ruben Marrero, the squad was able to fulfill most of its expectations. The season opened with several tournament games against bigger 4AAAA schools, but tha t was not to deter the perseverance of the team. They fought hard and gave their opponents a much harder time than they expected . During the bulk of the season in January through March the Wolverines pulled some upsets. Since the talent on the team was not as abundant as in the past, Belen had to develop more character among the players. One of the most unexpected victories came against Pace High, when they won by 12 points. They also defeated more unpredictable teams like Gulliver and Westminster As usual, the games against Lasalle and Ransom were prime time for the bench to strut their stuff, surpassing 100 points in the second game of the season against the latter.
As one of the team captains, Joe Moriras led in scoring, av eraging more th an 20 points per game. Not far behind was the only Sophomore on the team, Emilio Marrero. Other key players included Seniors: Orlando Cabeza and Julio Pestonit; Junior team captain at Point Guard Thomas Gonzalez-Diego, Alex Rodriguez at forward and Jorge Lopez-Garcia at Center along with George Perez, Rolando Mendoza, and Roberto Torricella. With different combinations of these players as well as the bench, the Belen Wolverines won the District Championship and in an extremely close game lost to Gulliver in the Regional Championship by one basket in double overtime. But not to despair, we'll get them next year.

Soccer '83
The Belen soccer team kicked off its season with a reputation for being a young and inexperienced tea1 However, as the season progressed, the Wolverine soccer team quickly established themselves as one of t l more skillful and/owerful teams in the district. The first game of the season was won with great ease as t l Wolverines score 13 goals and allowed 0 scored against them in their defeat of Atlantic Christian. The n€ game, which truly demonstrated the Wolverines' determination, was won by the Wolverines by a margin oj goals as they defeated St. Brendans 7-3. The Wolverines then went on a 12 game winning streak during whi1 they defeated number one ranked Curley 2-1. With this victory the Wolverines established themselves as t< contenders for the district trophy. The Belen soccer team finished second in conference behind Gulliver. Although the team was young, their coaches, Augustin de Goytisolo and Ralph Iglesias, managed to mold tl young players as well as the veterans into a powerhouse which shocked many. Players such as Luis Uriarte a1 Lenny Rodriguez, which made All-Conference and All-Dade Honorable Mention; Juan Sanchez, who mac All-Dade; and Fred Macia who made All-Conference, carried the team to many victories as its captains. Tl talent of the Wolverine team was recognized on different occasions as Luis Uriarte and Juan Sanchez were eac named "Player of the Week" by the Miami News and the Miami Herald. The Wolverines' season ended on sour note as they lost to La Salle 1-0 in the district playoffs. However, the Wolverines' final record of 16 and and key victories over teams such as Curley, St. Brendans, Gulliver, and Ransom overshadowed the defeat.

Tennis
The 1982-1983 tennis team was a young team. With no seniors on the team, the question of whether or not the young team would do well during the season came up. The team was composed of two juniors, a freshman and two seventh graders. The question was answered when the tennis team turned in a smashing record of 9-2, which would go down in Belen history as the best tennis record ever. The team had improved their previous record of 8-3 which came during the 1981-82 season.
The team faced stiff competition but always seemed to come out victorious. The team's most rewarding victories came against Gulliver, Westminister and Kendall Acres.
The team was anchored by the play of Hector Ortiz, Rafael Quintana, Jorge Dalmau, Luis Iglesias, Robert "lefty" Grandal and Teo Rosell. Other strong plays came from Roger Ribas, Noe Otalvaro. The team was led by the humorous yet demanding coach, Pat Collins.
With all the players of the 1982-83 season returning, the tennis team will try its best to improve their 9-2 record in the 1983-84 season.
Special congratulations are given to Hector Ortiz and Jorge Dalmau for their stupendous, undefeated records of 11-0 during the season. This season 3 players from the Belen tennis team were selected by the Miami Herald and Miami News to the All-Dade team under the category of honorable mention. The players were Hector Ortiz, Rafael Quintana and Jorge Dalmau.
The tennis team would like to thank Mr. Pat Collins for all the time and effort he put in trying to make the tennis team a success.

83SEASON
This year's Track and Field Team was coached by Carlos Barquin, who was in his lOth year of coaching track at Belen, and Richard Stuart. The team compiled a dual meet record of 9-wins and 3-losses. In spite of only 6 returning lettermen, the team went on to set 5-new school records: 8-state finalists and placed 5th in the sophomore meet among all schools in Dade County including public schools. They also placed 2nd place in the All Catholic Meet defeat i ng rival Columbus. Its biggest accomplishment was the big upset in winning its 4th Conference title in a row. After being seeded 3rd Belen upset West Minister Christian School, and Gulliver for the championship. Belen's key athletes were seniors - Michael Perez, Hugo Montiel, Juan Sanchez, Victor Gutierrez, and Juniors - Emiliano Herran, Juan C. Alvarez, Sophomores - Eric Alvarez, Danny Garrido, Ricky A. Mayo, and Calixto Garcia Velez.

Baseball '83
The 1983 baseball season proved to be a surprising one for Belen. With only four players returning, it looked like the Wolverines would have a poor season. But, led by MVP Jose de Goti and team captain Juan Quintero, the Wolverines compiled a 15-8 record and won their 3rd straight district championship. Before the season started, pitching was a big question mark for Belen. Tony Franyie answered this question by compiling a 7-2 record and recording 53 strike-outs. The other four[itchers contributing to the Wolverines' success were John Beltran, Alfred Consuegra, Albert del Valle an Joaquin Novoa All-County players Jose de Goti and Angel Navarro carried the team offensively by hitting .423 and .388 respectively. Juan Quintero proved to be an inspirational leader by hitting .324 and committing only two errors all season. Juan Figueras had the tough task of replacing Fran Mora on this year's team He responded well to this challenge by hitting .291 and throwing out 15 base runners in 23 games. The Wolverines should even look better next year. With only two seniors leaving, they have a great shot to win their first regional championship ever and possibly make a trip to the state tournament.

BOY SCOUTS
The Belen community is proud to say that it once again has i own Boy Scout troop. This year, under the enthusiastic leadersh of Mr. Humberto Adan, the Belen Scouts of Troop 43 engaged various activities that are very worthy of mention; among their a complishments were two troop campouts in Clewiston ar Florida City, the Tequesta District Camporee at Matheson Har mock, and the unenviable Tombola Clean Up project. This comir July, Belen Troop 43 is planning a Summer Camp at John Pe necamp State Park in Key Largo The Echoes Staff would like extend its best wishes to Troop 43 as they continue to provi4 character building experiences for Belen students in the future.
The 1983 Echoes started almost completely fresh . Ken Thornberry , the Taylor representative gave special classes on lay-outs, graph i cs, special effects and photography. An organized group s tarted to work with great enthusiasm to put together this year ' s book. It ' s expected to be on time!

PEP RALLIES
The Belen Pep Rally can be appropriatE described in two words: organized chaos. on than at the sporting events themselves, nowht else does the Belen Student Body show energetic support and enthusiasm more intensE than at the Pep Rallies. From the underclassm on up to the Seniors, the Pep Rallies had a way bringing out the competitive fire in all t students. The Echoes staff would like to cc gratulate the Student Council and the Pep Cl for making it all possible.
Cheerleaders '83
This year the Belen Wolverine sports program was given a huge boost by eleven vivacious cheerleaders. delightful girls helped the Wolverines to many victories during the football and basketball seasons. The squa was captained by Lynette Santin, and she was assisted by Cori Lopez Castro, Carmen Clavijo, Lori Shay, Betse McKeon, Lilliane Voight, Aida Perea, Sandra Gonzalez, Christina Ramirez, Vivian Borges, and Alicia These cheerleaders went beyond their duty, especially when Cori Lopez Castro drove all the way to Marathon 1 cheer at a basketball game. The Belen community would like to thank the girls who inspired our players and mad the games more enjoyable for the fans.
Ramon Guiteras Memorial Library
The most important cultural annex of Belen in Miami is the RAMON GUITERAS MEMORIAL LIBRARY. This library was originally founded in Matanzas, Cuba, by a member of the distinguished Guiteras family, Ms. Gertrude E. Guiteras, in memory of her prominent father Ramon Guiteras, who was born in Matanzas in 1811 and died in Bristol, R.I., in 1873. This public library opened its doors in 1941, but after the marxist revolutionary government of Cuba confiscated the property and changed the use of the building into a marxist social club, the proceeds of the Gertrude E. Guiteras Trust were with-held and ultimately, following a decision of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, were granted to Belen Jesuit Preparatory School for the construction, maintenance and operation of a Public Library under the name of Ramon Guiteras Memorial Library.
The Library occupies a sizeable part of the new School building with all the modern facilities, serving the community in its bilingual capacity. It actually stores one of the best collections of Cuban books if! the United States, in addition to a rich stock of English books in the secondary, college and university levels for the daily use of teachers, students and reading public in general.
The Board of Governors of the Library is formed by John Guiteras, Chairman, Antonio Abella, Secretary, Daniel Baldor, S.J. Francisco Perez-Lerena, S.J., President of Belen School, and Richard W. Peterson, representing the Trustees.
In September 1982, looking forward towards expanding the cultural values of the Library, a Board of Patrons was established under the name of "Ramon Guiteras Intercultural Center" through the initiative of Luis J. Botifoll, who was appointed Chairman. This Board of Patrons was selected from a group of distinguished personalities in education, media, business and other outstanding enterprises in the Miami Community. These members, including the Librarian and representatives of the School, are: Antonio Abella, Richard Adams, Horacio Aguirre, Armando Alejandre, Roberto Fabricio, Adolfo Fernandez Carol, Maurice A. Ferre, Sergio Figueredo, S.J. John Guiteras, Guillermo Jorge, Jose Ignacio Lasaga, Raul Masvidal, Leopoldo Nunez, Francisco Perez-Lerena, S.J., Jaime Pino and Jose Ignacio Rasco.
The "Ramon Guiteras Intercultural Center" is an institution basically devoted to promote the Cultural Values of Cuba, Latinamerica and the States, in order. to search for a better knowledge and understanding between the Hispanic and Anglo population.
To fulfill its mission the Board of Patrons has in mind a program of conferences, talks, forums, seminars, certain books, expositions of books and works of art, and other initiatives proper to this type of organtzatwn.
Inaugurating the activities of the Intercultural Center, a cycle of conferences was dictated in the Library by the following speakers: Raul Shelton, Mons. Agustin Roman, Humberto Pinera, Jose . Igancio Rasco and Carlos Marquez Sterling.
The Alumni Association of the Belen community serves to inform the Belen graduates of the past about wha going on in Belen's present and what is projected for the future of the school. By arranging reunions, the Alun Association also makes it possible for former Belenites to get together and reminisce about the "good old days" well as make creative inputs concerning the improvement of the school. The Echoes Staff would like to tha Father Juan Dorta Duque for his cooperation in addition to his fine work as the director of the Alun A s sociation .

Development Office
The Office of Development is the Administrative Office responsible for the School's overall program development. Their officers are appointed by the President to whom they are directly accountable. The prese Officers are Father Richard Chisholm, S.J., Director, and Mr. Jose Ignacio Rasco, Financial and Legal Coordinat< with the Secretarial help of Mrs. Marina Hernandez.
The main function of this Office is to assist the President in the process of planning, organizing, coordinati1 and supervising the School's general Fund-Raising Programs involving outside participation, and the material e pansion in accordance with its goals and possibilities. This is achieved through its role in fostering the "go< will" image of Belen in the community.
It was the responsibility of this Office to plan, direct and supervise all the procedures towards the financial c rangements with the banks, necessary permits, follow up with architect, contractors and other interests involv4 in the building of our new School and subsequent development of playgrounds and other facilities.
The activities of the Office are chiefly concentrated on public relations and correspondence, business transa tions with legal and banking institutions, communications media, and other Community organizations, in dirE relation with the Board of Advisors of the School. The Executive Committee of this Board with Mr. Jorge Bosch Chairman, is formed by the President of the School, Father Francisco Perez-Lerena, S.J. and the followil members:
Luis J. Botifoll
Richard Chisholm, S.J.
Eugenio Cosculluela
Carlos de la Cruz
Manuel de la Fuente
Agustin de Goytisolo
John Edwards, S.J.
Sergio Figueredo, S.J.
Jose A. Garcia Frut
Jose A. Garri<
John Guiter
Gonzalo Lal
Jaime Pil
Jose Ignacio Ras , Msgr. Bryan 0. Wal1
This Office was founded some years ago by Father Felipe Arroyo, S.J. in order to speed up the financing ar construction of the present building and undoubtedly was an essential factor in having the new School alrea< built.
The day to day Fund-Raising program is carried out on the basis of personal or institutional solicitations f donations and pledges, grants from Foundations or Multi-Nationals, matching Funds, etc.
As it has been a policy of the School to maintain tuitions as low as possible, the Office of Development has be« compelled to sustain a permanent Fund Raising Campaign and constantly appeal to the good will and generosi of all those friends one way or the other connected with Belen.
Another basic involvement is in the coordination of the main yearly activities as related to fund raising, direct cooperation with the efficient groups of action of the School: Alumni, Faculty and Students, Paren Friends of Belen and some other groups not related directly with the School, resulting in the five very success£ activities: The Gala Dinner and Dance, The Alumni Field Day, The Fashion Show, The Fiesta Latina, and the Trac tional Belen Festival (T6mbola).
We have to think not only in terms of the heavy financial burden weighing over the School due to the interE rates of the Construction Loans, the growth of the index of inflation and the influence of the general depressio which hinder development, but we have to look to the future and think in practical terms of what has yet to 1 done. First of all, the planned Gymnasium and Activities Center; the further development of playgrounds; reloc tion of Football field to make way for the future Gym, baseball fields, track, tennis, etc. And in the Academic Lin the Language and Arts laboratories, the Computer Center, the Conference Hall, etc. Fortunately the Chapel h been basically finished this year.
With the decided cooperation of all everything is possible.

GRADUATION 1983
On June 4, fifty six young men closed an important chapter in their lives. After years of pressure, strain, term papers, and final exams, the Belen Class of 1983 had finally made the grade. In a beautiful ceremony that took place at the Gusman Hall in the University of Miami, the seniors received their diplomas and said farewell to the Belen way of life. The Jesuit tradition runs deep in Belen and these Seniors are no exception. May the Belen experience serve as a source of strength and pride for these young men as they go forth in the world to accomplish their goals.

"Love gives not but itself, and takes
but from itself Love possesses not 1 would it be possessed, for love is suffid unto love."
About one year ago, a new bank came to Coral Gables.
But this bank wasn't a branch of a city-wide bank. Or a big state -wide In sti tution. Or an offshoot of some foreign bank.
Nothing like that. This bank was owned and opera ted by people who call Coral Gables home. And have done so, in many cases, for ge neration s. (Our directors and advisory board represent nearly 640 years of Coral Gables life.)
Which is why we decided to call ourselves The Bank of Coral Gables. And, ever since we opened our doors, we've done all we can to live up to that name
We've shown the ;Jeople of our community that we are truly their bank. Totally dedicated to Coral Gables and everybody who lives and works here.
We've shown them some very special se rvices for professionals And provided direct access to top management.
We've shown them that even a small bank can offer outstanding international and commercial capab ilities. Without sacrif ic in g the personalized,
highly respon sive relationships of a small neighborhood bank.
We've shown them that we're intent on preserving the character of the city we know and love. Our new building is a good demonstration of - T that commitment. It 's schedu led for comp leti on around the end of 1983. And if it look s like it was built 50 years ago by George Merrick himself, well, that's the whole idea. To keep Coral Gables
unique and special and not quite like anyplace else.
And what has Coral Gables shown us in return?
Well, in a little over one year we've gone from $0 to $27 million in total asse ts. Which seems to us to be a pretty eloquent response on the part oft he community. It also makes us one of the fastest growing banks in the United States.
And that's just the beginning. The Bank of Coral Gables came into being because we saw the need for a bank that really put this city first. We are, in fact, the only locally owned and operated bank in the downtown Coral Gables area.
We've gotten off to a terrific start. And, with your continued support, we know that we can continue to work toward a brighter future for all of us.
Come in and talk to us soon at our temporary facility at 101 Almeria Avenue, Coral Gables.
We think the more you know about Th e Bank of Coral Gables, the more you' ll see that we're the only bank for you.
THE BANK OF CORAL GABLES.
