The phoenix is a mythological bird associated with the worship of the sun in classical antiquity Only one phoenix exists at any time . It is unique . Some soy its life spans more than 500 years. As its end approaches the phoenix makes a nest of aromatic leaves and spices. sets it on fire , and is consumed in the flames. From this pyre a new phoen ix arises, w ith its promise of a new down after a sometimes turbulent sunset
A new down A new beginning It is fitting that the phoenix, with its intimotions of immortality and its allegory of res urrection be the symbol for the new Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, since it also has been born anew and has surmounted many obstacles The first Colegio de Belen was founded in 1854 by the Jesuit fathers in Havana , Cuba. It was first established in the Old Havana in on old hospital for convalescents, but was moved to the suburbs of Mar ionoo when the schoo l received a donation of sixty acres and several buildings This complex was later known as the Palace of Education, and its spiritual and academic lives earned a reputation of excellence all over the world.
In 1961. Castro's communist reg ime conf iscated all the private schools. Belen was one of the first to succumb, but , li ke the phoenix hod many lives In September of that very some year, Belen was reborn under ve ry adverse cond it ions on the fourth floor of the Gesu School in .downtown Miami. Belen did not interrupt its educat ional tradition The school next moved to S W 8th St where a small bu ild ing was bought , further annexes added, and a second f loor constructed. From 1962 to 1982 the spirit of the phoenix prevailed in cramped classrooms with faulty construct ion Soon the high standards of education swelled the student population to proport ions wh ich mode the -8th street sc hool buildings incapable of meeting the physical and environmental needs of the inst itut ion A massive campaign was in it iated by the Jesuit fathers parents , alumni, students and concerned citizens. A new Belen hod to be builta new Belen worthy of its 128-yeor tradition of spiritual, academic, and athletic excellence
In September of 1982 the phoenix rose once more from its ashes . The cutting of the ribbons the first day of school marked on emotional and climactic moment for the entire Belen community If the school has not only survived, but prevailed through so many set-bocks, it is because it has a well-defined and altru ist ic reason for being
There is only one phoenix There is only one Belen , adamant in its pursuit of excellence. It now pledges to continue to produce men of education, spirituality, enlightenment and wisdom These the qualities which ore indeed immo rtal. These ore the qualities which enhance the allegory of resurrection.

The phoenix is a most appropriate symbol for teaching. There is, in the course of the year, an expense of energy- not in giving information (which is effortle-ss), but in extracting information and in eliciting responses and ultimately in trying to develop in the student a greater sensitivity to beauty in art and to the feelings and needs of fellow human beings. By the end of the academic year, one is in need of being re-vitalized It is in the re-creation of the summer, the ashes of the teaching year , that one is refreshed and renewed for a new year. And each year is like a new beginning. There is, though, a vital difference: The phoenix was perennially the same ; human beings never can be Life and renewal involve change, and as soon as we stop growing we begin to die

Physical education ' s chief contribution to the education of on individual is the area of physical fitness. Physical fitness means the ability to corry on1 work load without staggering, to participate in recreation with ease and E joyment, and to hove a reservoir of endurance to meet the emergenci of life. The human body is in a constant state of renewal- it should be optimum condition to meet any crisis that should come up.

This year from the 28th of February until the 6th of March there were 25 students experiencing what many people talk about, in Iaymon's terms, it's called Close-Up. A 7 day voyage into the essence of American government With the careful supervision of Mr. Pot Collins , the students labeled the trip to D.C. a huge success. The students learned a new perspective about government in our notion's capitol. The week consisted of various seminars, workshops , and lectures But the students also enjoyed some free time . Time which was put to good use.
With the help of our companions from Houston, the Belen students hod on enriching and stimulating experience; on experience that will lost a lifetime. Memories of the snowball fights and the banquet will not be forgotten The Close-Up students would like to extend their deepest thanks to the Close-Up program and especially to Mr Collins for giving us the chance to experience Washington D.C.

Homecoming 1981-82
Yeah, I know what you must be saying to youself "wonder what cute phrases the 'Boys from Yearbook' come up with this year to describe Homecoming Week." Well, if you ore expecting that sort of article, you ore about to read something a bit different
Seems that this year we hove been blessed with a wonderfully beautiful new school. Please try to overlook the fact that there were no outdoor facilities, just to make this article more interesting. Activities this year consisted of the usual type as in the previous years. So if you don ' t recall exactly what they were, please refer to lost year's yearbook for more details
We hove, though, gone a little out of our way and will toke you on "Memory Lone" (corny, yet cute expression) and recap the highlights of this SUPERB, MARVELOUS and FOREVER WORSHIPPED Homecoming Week for you. As hard as it may seem to believe, the faculty actually won the Senior-Faculty Softball Game. Through the " grapevines" we hove learned that the victory was basically due to their latest acquisition, Coach Billy Long, and certain other unauthorized players.
Another event which we would also like to discuss with you is the Annual Senior Skit, coordinated by Ms. Sigrid Bongo, which was simply "eggcelent ." It basically revolved around o "Huevo-oriented" society which we one day would find ourselves in if we wouldn't be careful. This topic simply left our minds scrambled.
Against our better judgment, we ore forced to inform you that the football team lost the "Homecoming Game," too strong Pope John Paul II , held in Ft Lauderdale , not in Rome as some of you wise guys might be saying by now. We, here, personally recommend that all of the games should be played before labeling any of them the sacred "Homecoming Game, " allowing us to select o victory as such As crushed and "emotionally destroyed" as you would hove expected the Student Body to feel after this painful and agonizing football loss, the show hod to go on and the Konover Hotel was the place to keep the partying olive, along with the great, original sounds of Wildlife As usual, this "Homecoming Donee " was one of the top, exciting events of the year.
It was a good Homecoming, or at least o different one At any rote it was o NEW BEGINNING

Rollercoasters have been said to be symbolic of life- when it reaches its highest point you've got to be ready for a drop at any moment. This is true also of Belen Football. In 1980 belen had its best season ever, going 8 and 2 and .J I usually winning by a large margin This year the win/loss column registered 4ond 6, with most games won or lost by a last minute score, which games like St. Andrews and Gulliver all the more painful to remember. But that's not so bad considering that we were the only team in our conference without a J V. and a true "home" field.
The season did have its moments of glory though, like the almost impossible task of beating Marathon down there and the Westminster Academy Massacre And what about Rich Perez's 90 yard punt return and his 200 yard game. If you preferred to watch the passing game you were undoubtedly kept well entertained by Angel Montero's private aerial show as a wide receiver and a defensive back Or if you're a little on the sadistic side and like the defense, there were plenty of bangs, and thuds with Muniz's laugh being heard in the background. A five year jinx was broken when Ed "Flea" lturralde caught his first and only interception, but probably, the best single play was when Coach Hewitt called a trick play on a field goal attempt and Manny Cambo walked in for a touchdown while the opposition's defense were still getting out of the huddle
The 1981-82 season wasn't as bad as it sounded at first, after all, high school sports and high school in general is for learning and enjoying yourself simultaneously. And with a home field and a J V. coming soon, the Wolverines, just like that rollercoaster, are starting towards the top.

After three years o! disappointment in foiling to win the District Championship, the Belen Varsity squad brought home the trophy in 1982.
The season con best be described as one of overcoming adversity. To start, this year's schedule was the toughest in Belen history, featuring seven games with Closs AAAA and AAA schools. Furthermore, the team began the year by practicing without a court. A typical question asked by the players was, "Where ore we going to practice today?" In addition one of our more experienced players, Tomas Tomas, was injured for the season, after playing only a few games.
The team was off to a good start when for the first time ever, Belen reached the finals of the Early Bird Tournament, coming in second. Probably the most exciting game of the season was against Columbus. The Belen Fans, pocking the Columbus gym, inspired the players to keep the score close by playing a tough, aggressive team defense. In the third quarter Belen exploded to toke the lead, only to fall behind in the closing moments of the game and lose by a mere four points to a tough Closs AAAA school.
After the Christmas break, the team won 9 of its next 13 games, including a heartbreaking onepoint overtime loss to Deerborne despite having dominated most of the game.
Surely the highlight of the season was still to come when Belen would go on to demolish Pope John Paul II and a very physical Pine Crest team to capture the District 15AA Title. This set the stage for a Belen v. Deerborne Region BAA Championship game. After three quarters of ploy Belen found itself down by 12 points due in port to some questionable refereeing. The team then courageously put together a fierce comeback only to fall short by four points. Certainly it was a sod moment but the fans and players could still be proud because they hod given it their all.
The team was led by All-Dade, All-Conference, MVP Bernie Contens, All-Conference, Best Defensive Player, Pablo Alvarez, Eric Rodriguez, John Alonso, Julio Gonzalez, Joe Moreiros, Carlos Droschner and David Blanco. Other players who greatly contributed to the team's 17-11 season were Manny Combo, Fronk Rosa, Julio Pestonit, Orlando Cobezo and Victor Gutierrez.
We must keep in mind that all this could not hove been possible without the hard work and dedication of Coach Eugenio Ferreiro who completed his lost coaching season at Belen this year. He began coaching in 1968 at Belen when he was a senior guiding the 7-8th Grode team to four winning seasons. In 1973 he become the J.V. coach with a two year record of 39-1. His Varsity career is just as impressive with a seven year record of 146-51 including four Conference Championships, three District Championships, and two Regional Championships to his team's credit. In on interview with Yearbook correspondent Ferreiro said, ''I wish all my players will continue to work hard in life like they did on the court.'' He also wished Belen and its students a good future. In the some way post and present players, along with the Belen supporters will always remember his contribution to the school and its team. Appreciation is also due to Gaston Contens who filmed the games and served as assistant coach, and Ruben Marrero who was also on assistant coach.
The J. V. squad gave Coach Ruben Marrero his most successful season after seven years of coaching at Belen. This was definitely not a bod way to end off his J.V. career and move on to coach Varsity. Among the highlights of the season were victories over AAA division Pace and Western, twice defeating Deerborne in a convincing manner, and a great effort against AAAA division Columbus, coming only four points short. The team's success was mainly due to "hard hustle," team unity, and on extremely reliable bench.
Playing key roles in the 16-3 season were Thomas Gonzalez-Diego, Alex Rodriguez, Jorge LopezGarcia, Rolando Mendoza, Emilio Marrero, and George Perez.
In the 7'th and 8'th grade division, first year coach Gaston ''Pompy'' Contens, led his team to a nearly perfect season, having only one heartbreaking loss to a tough St. Brendan opponent. Nevertheless, this team kept tradition olive by once again capturing the Gulfstreom Athletic Conference title.

The 1981-82 Belen soccer team finished another successful season by reaching the District Finals for the fourth consecutive year. The team was led by on extremely talented offense mode up by Tony Muniz at striker and the "scoring machine" Luis Uriarte and Juan Sanchez. The Wolverines were also blessed with the skill of junior midfielders Fred Mocio and Lenn Rodriguez. These vets provided the necessary link between offense and defense. Senior goalkeeper Jeff lturrolde anchored a defense that was virtually impenetrable at times, thanks to the aggressive ploy of four year starter Jorge Castellanos, Broulio "Brewster" Boez, Albert (ardelle, and the resident bicycle kick expert, Ernie Conet. Coaches Augie de Goytisolo and Rolph Iglesias molded the group into one of the most explosive teams in the league.
The season started off slowly as the Wolverines faced a difficult season which included several powerful 3A teams. But as the season progressed the players started working together as a team with major victories over Gulliver (4-1), Pine Crest (1-0), and previously unbeaten Miami Country Day (5-1). As luck would hove it, however, the team went into a slump towards the end of the season losing four games by only one goal.
As the District 15AAA playoffs arrived, the Wolverines were determined to win. The first victim was LaSalle, who Belen beat for the seventh time in three years by a score of 3-1. Belen's next opponent was top ranked St. Brendons. In this game the Wolverines avenged on earlier loss to the Sabres by shutting them out 2-0. In the District the Wolverines were matched up against Curley. Despite a spectacular game by Jeff lturrolde, Curley managed one fluke goal. The Belen offense responded by putting pressure on the Curley defense but this was not enough and the Wolverines valiantly lost 1-0.
With many experienced Juniors and Sophomores returning, Belen should remain a powerhouse in the years to come and continue the winning tradition that goes hand in hand with Belen Soccer.

The 1981-82 Wolverine Tennis season began with m questions. Would the team, with only two starters re1 ing, be able to post its second winning season? 0 they improve on lost year's best ever -5 record? The of the season showed positive answers to both tt question, thanks to the coaching of Mr. Pot Collins, cc ed with a little bit of luck and a lot of determination.
The team won all the matches it was supposed to, showed enough poise to beat a strong Westmin team (4-J) The team was anchored by strong ploy f seniors Jorge Martinez and Broulio Boez, and the tE also received lively shot of new talent from 8th gr< Nino Ortiz, and Sophomores Jorge Dolmou and R1 Quintana.
The big surprises come in the tournament Belen c come tough competition in the Conference Tourne · finish in third place behind the playing of Jorge Doln 5. who was runner-up in the No 4 singles. The real high of the season however, come in the District Tournon where Belen surprised many 4A teams on its way to c place finish out of some 40 teams. The team finished on 8-J record, the best record in the h istory of WolvE Tennis.

The 1982 Belen Varsity Baseball Team looked forward to the season with grand expectations. The team returned with seven seniors, six of which were starters. After o bonner year in 1981, returning senior pitchers Ernie Rodriguez, Alex Peno, and Juan Uriborri were once again expected to silence the enemy bats. Led by the booming bats of Fronk Mora, Rick Retomor, Manny Rodriguez, and Juan Quintero, the fearsome Wolverine attock was ready for another chance to score runs to support the excellent p!tching.
The Wolverine team hod o very tough rood to the top in 1982. Among the formidable opponents the Belen team faced during the year were 4A power Columbus, stalwart 3A teams Curley and St. Brendons, and the always tough Bulldogs of Loyola The Wolverines lost o heartbreaker to Columbus, but rebounded for on exhileroting victory against Loyola at their home field. Curley and St. Brendons also bit the dust as the Wolverines trampled their opposition on the way to o district championship and o 20 win, 9 loss season.
After their climatic district victory, the Belen team ended its season in o loss to 2A rival Westminister Christian at the regional championship game. Though the loss to their nemesis, the Warriors, was disappointing, the Wolverine fans hod o lot to cheer about for the next year because some talented underclassmen will return to lead the team. Fronk Argomosillo, Jose De Goti, Jose Figueras, and Juan Quintero will all return next year to lead the Wolverines through another exciting season.

From the first day in which the Belen Academy for the Sciences of Earth and Space arrived at the Belen campus, the neverending effort to adjust to the premises began. Many students including Rolando Bronly, Jorge Corrales, Gus Garcia-Montes, Luis Valdez, and Bill Juliochs spent much of the final days of summer vocation assisting in the movement of the possessions of their club to the new location.
The adjustments did not end here. New agreements with the school library, which has helped us so much in our efforts, hod to be mode. An inspection of the sturdiness of the school's roof hod to be mode to determine if it was safe to build a dome on it. An all out effort in order to complete plans so that the new Apple II computer could help the faculty teach was also under way. The adjustments and plans would hove never been possible if it were not for the dedication of many hard-working students, administrators, and members of the faculty.
There is no doubt that the awareness of science has risen in Belen to some extent because of the efforts of all these people. Now that most of the adjustments to the new environment hove been mode, it is time for the magnification of all these people to begin working so that more of the student body becomes aware of their surroundings. Unfortunately, one great adjustment is still left, the acceptance of our responsibilities now that Fr. Pedro Cortoyo is leaving to Santo Domingo. This should not deter our members; it should inspire them. Fr. Cortoyo has always said that it is our work that keeps B.A.S.E.S going. Now, more than ever, this must be the case.
