MASSESAND RETREATS

The motto of the Jesuit order, as begun by St. Ignatius of Loyola, is "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam." Two vital acts performed by Belen "For the Greater Glory of God" are the giving of Mass and the providing of retreats for those students who wish to mature in their faith, share the Christian experience, and learn more about themselves.

In instituting the Eucharist, Christ said "Do this in memory of me." In keeping with Jesus' commandment, the Mass is offered on the occasion of special religious festivals as well as every morning.

Belen has a long history of striving to make its student body truly Christian. One effective way to achieve this is through the presentation of Christianity in action. This is what Mass is all about. A sign that this message was being heard were the increasing attendances at the morning liturgies. This year a greater number of homerooms frequented these masses than had in the recent past.

Largely due to the efforts of Fr. Pedro Cartaya and Fr. Eddie Alvarez, retreats became an integral part of the Christian life at Belen this year. The early part of the first semester consisted of mainly senior retreats. These were followed by senior-junior retreats. By the second semester the other grades were invited to participate.

Retreats were successful in that they helped the students reflect upon their relationship with themselves, others and God. Having done this, many grew mentally and spiritually, which are important steps in maturing into adulthood.

COURT OBSERVER PROGRAM

Wednesday's, when most Juniors are listening to lectures, a bakers dozen of uncommonly well-dressed Juniors are at the Dade County Courthouse. This group participates in a program sponsored by the Dade County School Board known as the Court Observer Program.

1 Ms. Toni Kirkwood, the program's teacher, sends her "Belen Kids" as well as her other students (from various Dade schools) everywhere from murder trials to bond hearings to the detention centers. Then, in a small classroom that was recently moved to the second floor, Ms. Kirkwood asks her students for feedback on what they have seen and heard. She also gives lectures on the · criminal justice system and has frequent guest speakers who discuss justice-related topics with her students.

The program itself was designed to give Juniors and Seniors from all schools a "feel" for the justice system, perhaps in order to curb teenage delinquency. This program is twelve years old.

The class is divided into two nine week sessions. A student must attend either a morning or afternoon session once a week for the duration of the term. Students that participate in the program love it. Most say that they have learned much about our system of laws and procedures and enjoyed themselves in the process. Hopefully, Belen students will continue to have the opportunity to take this class.

Blood Drive

In December, the Belen community had a unique opportunity to put its beliefs into practice. The John Elliot Blood Bank came to sponsor the first annual blood drive. Twenty five students and faculty each donated a pint of blood to be used in Miami area hospitals. Despite the minor inconveniences, all who participated felt that they had done something worthwhile to personally help someone in need.

FRESHMAN SWAMP SLOG

For the third consecutive year, Mr. Migliaccio's Freshman Earth Sciences class spent a day in Everglades National Park observing natures ecology. After studying the unique area in class, students had an opportunity to see the area first hand. Alligators, egrets, silver palms and spoonbills were but a part of the wildlife observed there. The unanimous h igh po int of both trips was the "swamp slog" into a cypress head. Thanks goes to Ms. Jimenez, Dr. LaBahn, Ms. Mr. Khuly, Manuel Becera and Ramon Rodriguez.

Close-Up

This year, twenty-two Belen students visited Washington, D C. along with Mr. Pat Collins Their trip was sponsored by the nationwide Close-Up Foundation Its purpose is to enable students to have a closer view and a better perspective of the American governmental system The week was divided into seminars, workshops, and lectures

The group who went was somewhat disappointed at the lack of snow but everyone agreed that the entire experience was an eye-opening one The Close-Up students extend their deepest thanks to Mr. Collins and the entire staff of the Program for helping them have a wonderful and enriching experience - Ed lturralde.

HOMECOMING-1981

"Everywhere we go! People want to know who we are! So we tell them: "We are the Wolverines! The mighty, mighty Wolverines!"

These were but a few of the sounds of that most memorable week of the year, Homecoming Week. Alumni traveled back to their Alma Mater to catch a glimpse of what Belen was, is, and will be.

Monday, "Hat and Color Day" kicked off the week. The students proudly wore their blue and gold in addition to some rather peculiar headresses.

After school, the seniors and faculty had it out in the annual Senior I Faculty Softball Game. Once again, the faculty outsmarted their younger and more agile opponents and came from behind to win 10-9.

On Tuesday, the Belen faculty was treated to a most unexpected surprise, "Teacher Appreciation Day." Each member of the teaching staff was presented with a box of "goodies." Although students did not have to buy their teachers an apple, a little understanding and cooperation was certainly welcomed. Planned and executed by S.C. president, Jorge Blanco, the event set a pleasant mood for the rest of the week.

As the sun rose over Belen on the third day of Homecoming Week, 1980, students were rapidly getting into tune with the festivities.

Throughout the day there was a presentation of Breaking Away, an Oscar-winning film that deals with a young man's quest to leave adolescence behind him. That evening students from all grades were invited to display their musical, theatrical, and athletic abilities at the Second Annual Belen Talent Show.

"What is that familiar sound? What is it we hear? Voices! Laughter! Ah yes, the Senior Skit!" The Senior Skit, a virtual Homecoming institution, was ''Waves from Mariel.'' It was the comical story of Mariel refugee Pepito Pastelito's (Ted Garcia) efforts to succeed as a Belen student and a Wolverine quarterback to fulfill his promises to the ever-insistent "Virgen de Ia Caripowell" (Jorge Powell). The Skit was a great triumph for the Senior Class. School spirit was at a high point, as the week's sunset quickly approached.

"We're from Belen! We couldn't be prouder! And if you can't hear us, we'll yell a little louder!. " This contagious cheer quickly spread through an inspired crowd at Homecoming Friday's pep rally. Similar cheers captivated an even more inspired crowd at the Homecoming Game. However, all the cheers and euphoria could not save the Wolverines from the hungry jaws of Gulliver who outlasted Belen 14-6. The loss, however great, could not deter the overwhelming school spirit that zoomed full speed ahead, as the Homecoming Dance appeared on the horizon.

"The Beatles? The Rolling Stones? It's the 1960's? No, it's the Belen Homecoming Dance." The largest school dance of the year took place at the Konover Hotel. "Heroes" rock and rolled a jubilant crowd with music from bands like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Styx, Fleetwood Mac and many more. It was a great way to end a week that would soon be but one more memory.

As the stars twinkled far above the Konover and Miami, dancing couples felt a last surge of Homecoming spirit. With that last surge, Homecoming Week 1980 made its quiet and swift passage into history.

ONEONONE CHAMPIONSHIPS

For the second consecutive year, the sophomore and freshman classes staged a one on one basketball tournament to decide the best player among them. Midway through the second semester, the sophomores devised a tournament which would raise funds for their prom as well as bring out the best players in the divisions.

After a month of intense competition, two finalists surged from the pack. On a hot day in April, JORGE PEREZ AND JUAN SANCHEZ battled for 20 minutes to determine a champion. In the end, it was JORGE PEREZ who took home the prize.

Later on in the year, the senior class, in collaboration with the juniors, held a similar tournament to determine their best player. The finalists were PETER PEREZ AND TED GARCIA. The two dueled endlessly, but eventually PETER PEREZ overcame his opponent and was declared winner of the tournament.

BELEN CHRISTIAN YOUTH GROUP

The Belen Christian Youth Group is a group that has been in this school for many years. Every year a new flock of members join to continue the work of those who had to leave. This year has been a noted one. One good reason is because we have been working hand in hand with the Sts. Peter and Paul Youth Group. Through the will and determination of the Belen Christian Youth Group's President, Miguel Diaz, and Vice President, Jose E. Arcay, we have been able to accomplish many things. By our side the whole time were the President and Vice President of the Sts. Peter and Paul Youth Group Caridad Roca and Connie Quintero.

In the earlier part of the year we visited a "Nursing Home" to cheer up the people there and make life just a little happier for them. Our appeal against the abolishing of religious services on T.V was a noted one. Towards the end of December we gave a Christmas party at the "Home for the Retarded Children''. The people in charge of the place told us that they had never seen the children enjoy themselves so much.

In the later part of the year, we helped in a drive to collect money for the retarded children. Our canned food drive this year was also a success. A very touching experience we had was when we visited the Mariel refugees in their camp. We also sponsored a drive to collect medicines and other goods for them.

The most important drive which both groups sponsored this year has been the building of homes in the Dominican Republic. Father Eddie Alvarez took twelve teenagers, three from Sts. Peter and Paul and nine from Belen, to the Dominican Republic for the building of these homes. In order to accomplish this goal, we had to raise a minimum of $3,500.00 for the building materials. We raised this money through hard work in car washes, dances, presentation of a movie, and many donations. The two groups hope to be sponsoring this activity every year. The drive was a success thanks to God and all the members of the two groups.

BELEN ACADEMY FOR THE SCIENCES OF EARTH AND SPACE

It was a year of excitement and achievement for the members of the Belen Academy for the Sciences of Earth and Space. Some new clubs were added to the organization, field trips were organized, and consideration was given by the Administration to finally make it into the school's first student run non-profit corporation.

BASES is an organization of seven scientific clubs; the Astronomy, Weather, Oceanography, Rocketry, Amateur Radio & Communications, Computer, and the Scuba Clubs. These clubs all have their Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers. Each club raises its funds in the most feasible way and when equipment has to be purchased, or the club plans an activity, BASES matches the funds with appropriations or grants, somewhat like the federal government of the clubs.

The proposed BAS year works like Secretary, man oft the B

one in use this previous Vice president,

and Chairds a seat in from

announce d the F.C.C.

novice ES also had a seat in the lnte iami an August 1981.

BASES sponsored "activities in conjunction" this year included three trips to the Kennedy Space Center where a videotape was made by students, of the first space shuttle launch. In it people from all over the country are interviewed.

Future BASES plans call for the revitalization of the Belen Filmmaking and Video Club. This will be the eighth club affiliated to the BASES network. We have learned that only the students themselves can make BASES great because like in student government, here a student acquires the responsibliity to run his own affairs. Only by actively participating in the BASES process, can the real "experience" be felt.

The Astronomy Club, in its third year of operation, accomplished most of its goals for the year. Activities included field trips to the Southern Cross Observatory at the Museum of Science and a weekend trip to the historic launching of the Space Shuttle at Cape Canaveral. Students were able to use the school equipment on a regular basis and to participate in the operation of sophisticated hardware such as the solar activity monitor. Students with interest and knowledge in varied fields of astrophysics and planetary geology shared their views with the group during formal presentations. Next year the Club plans to widen their coverage of astronomical events to include meteor shower observations and additional work with the school telescopes.

This year, the Weather Club of B.A.S.E.S. enjoyed a year full of accomplishment. Records of daily weather in the Miami area were kept, and the Club also received weather information from every country and large city on Earth. This was done through the use of the Club's teletype machine. Each day, Club members recorded the daily weather information and posted it in the school lobby Late in the year, Club director, Gus Garcia-Montes wrote a TRS-80 computer program that would forecast weather. After more than 50 tests, the program proved to be fairly reliable. Next year, the Club hopes to publish an article based on their research done on local weather conditions.

The Oceanography Club was established with the goal to provide its members with an understanding of South Florida's unique aquatic environment.

Due to our location in South Florida the club has been able to provide its members with a few diving and snorkeling trips throughout the year. These trips include expeditions to John Pennekamp (Grecian Rocks and North Rocks) , Looe Key, Fowey Rocks and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.

The Oceanography Club is currently planning a three day trip to the Bahamas to take place sometime in July. The club is also looking forward to next yea.r in hope of providing its members with a larger variety of activities.

Since we live in a society that has become so dependent upon computers, we believe that a basic understanding of the computer can be beneficial.

This year the Computer Club was able to come in contact with some college students who were willing to share their time and experience with them. These people would come to Belen once a week and teach our members computer programming. The Club expects to continue this, and possibly expand their facilities to include more equipment.

RADIO CLUB

The Geology Club was organized under the direction of Julio Gonzalez. At the several meetings held during the evenings, students studied the various rock formations here in South Florida. One field trip to the Silver Bluff Formation along South Bayshore Drive was the high point of the year. Next year's plans inelude an expansion of the field trips to other areas, use of seismology instruments and the study of volcanology.

- Rolando Branly.

The goal of the rocketry club this year was to attain a better and more precise understanding of the latest space and rocketry technology. The club met every week after school to discuss the various NASA missions and to study the construction and functions of modern day rockets. Club activities included launchings of homemade rockets at Tamiami Park on weekends. Next year's plans include a Halftime show at the Homecoming football game.
