Gadium

Community VOLUNTEER Se rvice Program

In order to graduate from Belen, students are required to participate in one of various social work programs at local hospitals, Centro Mater, El Centro Hispano or La Liga Contra el Cancer. Despite the fact that many students said that they were not volunteering but being volunteered for the one semester program, most students agreed that 1. their experiences were indeed very rewarding.

Mr. Ignacio Lasaga and Mr. Dan Kroger

of the Theology Department coordinated the wide-ranging program . According to Mr. Lasaga, the goal of the program is to turn out more socially responsible students, and to give these students a chance to put their Christian values to work in order to help others.

While situations which may make a student feel uncomfortable or depressed , may arise, the positive aspects of the situations should be seen. If a student becomes aware of social problems, he will work harder to make sure that these problems do not occur so often. This should truly help to mold him into a man for others.

Homecoming Week 1980

The 1979 Homecoming Week was no doubt one of the best planned and most spirited in recent years. A variety of fun-filled activities enabled students and faculty members to unwind and have a good time.

In order to raise money for the Student Council, a slave auction was held in which representatives of the lower divisions homerooms bid for seniors as slaves. The "slaves" were forced to do whatever their seventh and eighth grade masters deemed fit; slaves did everything from push-ups to spoon-feeding their masters. The slaves were freed after a hard day of brutal and harsh labors and returned to their normal academic life.

The annual seniors-faculty game, in which the faculty survived a seniors rally and defeated their students by a single run, was a battle in which the faculty showed their superiority over the seniors.

The annual skit, coordinated by Ms. Georgina Garcia and Henry Garriga entitled "Bah Homecoming", gave the participating students a chance to express their feelings on the essence of school spirit during Homecoming Week.

For the first time, a Belen talent show as included in the Homecoming Week activites. The show was organized by Ms. Garcia and Mr. Rodriguez, and ranged from piano playing to Juan Portuondo's, Alfredo Rabassa's, Jorge Blanco's and Juan Menendez' rendition of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven".

On Friday, the football team's tough defense shut out the Coral Shores Hurricaines to give the Wolverines their second victory in a Homecoming confrontation. School spirit was quite evident at the clash, which saw the Belen football team win 9-0.

The Homecoming Week reached its climax on Saturday night at the Homecoming Dance which was held at the Howard Johnsons ballroom. For the second year in a row Southern Trust, a local rock group, provided the musical entertainment as they treated the group to hits by the Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney and Wings, and Fleetwood Mac.

The night ended as all good things must and the 1979 Homecoming Week faded only to leave the memories.

For the second time in as many years, the Belen faculty and Alumni sponsored a benefit basketball game against the Miami Dolphins to raise money for the new school. The evening began well as the Belen Alumni Over 35 demolished the LaSalle alumni team beefed up with several spectators. Victory for Belen against the Dolphins was not to be however. Rebounding by the AFC East Champs provided them with a narrow three point victory despite the run-and-gun strategy employed by Coach Ferreiro.

Tombola 1980

0 N THE HUNT FOR 1CKET BUI ERS

The Tombola came back to Belen after being held at St. Peter and Paul School the previous year. The general consensus was that Belen was where the Tom bola belonged. Apparently there was some truth to the belief that more school spirit is generated when this annual Festival is held at the school. For the first time ever, over thirty thousand tickets were sold. Las Vegas gave those searching for a little excitement a chance to try their hand at gambling. The lucky ones could trade their play money in f or prizes which had been graciously donated by students and local shops. The kioskos run by each of the classes provided games and refreshments. jimmy Perez and the Belen Cafeteria staff were always busy preparing Latin food in the school cafeteria that was always bursting with people. After an exhausting day of work, it was a welcome place to grab a bite to eat before getting back to the Tombola.

Thanks to the hard work of the Belen community, the Tombola was again successful in raising the large sum of money for the scholarship fund.

One-on-One Championships

This year, for the first time, freshmen and sophomores had a chance to show off all of their fancy basketball moves in five minute "one-on-one" competition refereed by Coach Ferreiro and Mr. Ruiz. After two of the preliminary rounds the semifinals saw Julio Gonzalez beaten by Ricky Retamar and Anthony Grant beaten by the favorite, Bernie Cantens. In the final game, height won out over flashy moves and Bernie Can tens was able to defeat Ricky Retamar for the trophy.

Wolverine Cro ss C o un t ry 1 980

In 1978, Belen's Cross Country Team was the State Runner-Up. Second place in the state seemed very difficult to follow up, but Coach Barquin's team always find a way to achieve superb seasons. This year the Wolverines finished with one of the most impressive seasons in Belen's history 21-0 in regular season, Conference and District Champs. As well as keeping the reputation as a local powerhouse, Belen was feared statewide.

Despite the Wolverines' record, Coach Barquin had plenty to worry about. One week before the regular season began Senior Billy Candela came down with mono which put him out for the season. Candela, the most experienced member of the team and also first man at the time was to be greatly missed. Candela's loss put a heavier burden on the team's less experienced, but equally talented runners.

Junior Carlos de Ia Cruz immediately took over as first man, but midway through the season the jinx struck again. Carlos' grades were dropping and he was forced to leave the team temporarily. However, through the efforts of Coach Barquin, Carlos was able to continue running. Freshman Hugo Montiel was another casualty. A popped blood vessel in his foot put Hugo out for two weeks. Senior Humberto Hernandez and junior Lino Menendez also had injury problems. Senior and team co-captain Carlos Batlle couldn't dedicate the necessary time and even missed a few meets because of his other duties.

After six of Barqu ins prospective top seven had such problems, it seemed as though Belen would go nowhere. Yet, depth has always been the main strength of Belen teams, and this year was no different. Sophomores Larry Candela and V. G. Sanchez came through with good seasons battling for the seventh man position all year long. Adding to the team's strength were two of the most pleasant surprises for the season: Freshman Juan Sanchez and 8th grader J. C. Alvarez who finished third in the District Meet, Belen's top finisher that day. Largely due to the efforts of runners such as All-Conference Runners De Ia Cruz, Rabassa and J. C., Hugo, Battle, the Sanchez Bros., Larry, and Humberto the "Wolf Pack" was feared and respected. Opposing teams dreaded to come up against this young, inexperienced but at the same time truly outstanding team.

Inexperience proved very harmful in the long run. At the time of the State Meet, only three of Belen's top seven had previously participated in a State meet: Senior and CoCapt. Alfredo Rabassa, Carlos de Ia Cruz, and Hugo Montiel. Going into the meet ranked 3rd in the state, hopes were high for a State Championship. However, our runners fell behind early, something that can't be done in a big meet and they never quite caught up, finishing a disappointing sixth place in the state. A sixth place finish in the state was nothing to be ashamed of but it wasn't what they were longing for. Despite this disappointing finish, next year's prospects seem good, as 11 runners return, including 5 of the top seven runners.

Wolverine Football-1979-80

The 1979 Wolverines who finished their campaign with an impressive 8-2 record, constantly manifested themselves as a very high caliber football team. An explosive offense had very little trouble scorin g and a tough defense kept opposing offenses in check all year.

The Wolverines opened their season at Flamingo Park, their new home field in Miami Beach. All four of Belen's offensive backs scored in the 33-0 rout of the St. Andrews Scots. The following week brilliant performances by Luis Guerra, Jose Casal, Henry Avila and quarterback and placekicker Frank de Ia sparked the Wolverines to a 45-6 victory over Ransom-Everglades. After a victory on the road against the Marathon Dolphins not only were the Wolverines undefeated, but the "Crunch Bunch" had yet to yield a point.

As rain fell at a crowded Flamingo Park, the LaSalle Royals jumped off to a 13-0 lead over Belen. Belen's defense, however, held throughout the rest of the contest and after an interception by Eddie Miyares the Wolverines began to rip the Royals' defense with Frank de Ia Camara's passing to Kenny lrigoyen and Marcos Sainz. As it was throughout the whole season, the offensive line's performance was nothing short of superb. The 42-13 victory was Belen's second consecutive defeat of the Royals.

The next two games were the only ones which could be termed as frustrating. Despite the fact that the Wolverines played in such a manner that would have ordinarily insured victory, they suffered two disappointing losses to Westminster and Pine Crest. After falling to the Warriors by a score of 12-7, the Wolverines began preparing to face the Pine Crest Panthers in a showdown for the inside track to the 16AA title and a playoff berth. After falling behind the Wolverines began to execute their plays with perfect precision. Eddie Miyares and Henry Avila returned an interception and a fumble for touchdowns and the Wolverines, who had at one point trailed by a 22-6 margin, pulled within two points of the Panthers lead. A late touchdown, however, nailed down the victory for Pine Crest, who went on to win the 16AA title.

The Homecoming Game was a hard-fought struggle but, thanks to Luis Guerra's touchdown and a field goal by Frank de Ia Camara, the Wolverines prevailed with a 9-0 victory to snap their two game losing skid and improve their record to 5-2 After defeating Gulliver 44-0 the Wolverines began preparations to face the undefeated Dade Christian Crusaders. With the Wolverines clinging to a 9-7 lead late in the game, the Crusaders established a drive deep into Belen territory; the defense, however, held when it counted the most and Belen won again. The Wolverines totally dominated the Loyola Bulldogs in the season finale. The team was in firm control and when Vince Garcia caught a touchdown pass the club had a 41-0 lead. On the ensuing extra point attempt a Loyola player tried to hit de Ia Camara. A fight resulted, causing the game to be halted, and Belen was given its well-deserved victory.

The '79 season will always be remembered as a very productive one. The hard work had finally paid off and Belen's future looks very bright. Congratulations are due to Coach Dave Hewett for putting together Belen's best football season ever.

Wolverine Soccer 1980

The Wolverine soccer team finished their fourth season with their best record ever: 14-11. This year the team captured the GAC championship, the FAAA District championship, f inished in the number 2 spot for the Region and were ranked eighth in the State.

The team began the season strongly by shutting out their first three opponents. Gables Academy fe.ll first 6-0. jose Smith and Fred Poey were the only scorers in the second Deerborne fell 4-0 but the Wolverines lost their only game of the season to Pace 10.

After the Christmas break the team totally dominated all opposition both within and outside the Conference. I n the game against Boca Raton, a penalty kick and a missed offsides call enabled Boca to end the game in a tie .

The team traveled down to the Keys to play Marathon and after having problems with the b uses, finally went on to win 5-0. The Wolverines played well against Gulliver but could only manage 3 goals. The St. Andrews Scots scored two quick goals but Fred Poey's goal p rovided Belen with a 3-2 edge. Remaining games were easy ones and Belen outscored opponents 7-2.

I n the first game of the District playoffs, Belen played Ransom who showed a very defensive strategy. Frank DelaCamara put in a long shot for the victory. St. Brendan's was defeated 2-0 for the District title.

The Regional Championships pitted arch rival Westminster Christian against the Wolverines. Both teams played well and after regulation time ended the score was tied at 1. After a record eight overtime periods the Warriors ended the Wolverine season with a well placed shot that eluded goalie Alfredo Rabassa.

Wolverine Basketball1980

The 1980 Wolverines faced very tough competition in a season that had its ups and downs. Coach Eugene Ferreiro purposely scheduled the squad against very highly ranked teams in order to prepare the Wolverines for the district playoffs.

Javier Arellano, a post season All Conference selection, provided the Wolverines with an outside scoring threat. When he couldn't spring free for a shot, Pete Perez, Louis Lamar and Ralph delosReyes muscled opponents under the boards. Reyes also reaped post season honors. The squad put together impressive victories against respected teams asuch as Pace, Gulliver and Westminster Christian. For the second time in two years, a shot at the · buzzer beat Pace.

In their first two meetings with Gulliver and Westminster, the Wolverines went on top early and stayed ahead through the first quarter. Gulliver rallied and led at the half by 18 pts. The eager Wolverines blew the Raiders off the court in the second half and earned the name "The Cardiac Kids."

Unfortunately the 1980 season was not without its low points. Perhaps the most disappointing part of the season was the Killian tournament in which the Wolverines suffered two heartbreaking defeats to Columbus and Sunset High. The Columbus Explorers fell behind Belen in a first round game, but midway through the third quarter the Wolverine lead had vanished and they found themselves trailing by 17 points. The Wolverines rallied and pulled within 4 but the clock was the real enemy and finally defeated Belen.

In a consolation game, Belen lost to Sunset 74-68 despite 25 pts. from de los Reyes.

The Wolverines were to face LaSalle in the first round of the 16AA playoffs. the year before, the Royals had defeated the third-ranked Belen team by two points. This year the story was different as the Royals were routed. However, Gulliver avenged an earlier loss to knock Belen out of the District playoffs. 1980 also marked the first time in five years that Belen did not win the Gulfstream Athletic Conference title but the Wolverines were not daunted and plan to re-establish their domination next year.

Wolverine Tennis 1980

In what was called a rebuilding season by coach Pat Collins, the Belen Tennis Team had a 3-6 record. The highlihgt of the season was a victory over arch rival La Salle.

Since the team will only be losing sportsmanship award winner Fausto Martin, there is only room for improvement on next year's squad. With players like AI Hermida, Ricky Martinez, and Richard Adams returning, next year's team is assured of a better season.

Belen Baseball1979-80

The Wolverines came into their own in the 1980 Baseball season. Coach Dave Hewett's rebuilding program was successful as evidenced by the squad's 16-7 record. The young ball club went out and accomplished two goals Coach Hewett had set out before the season, first the team won 15 games and second they never lost two in a row.

The club, whose team batting average was .305, had an awesome hitting attack anchored by Frank Mora an all city and all conference selection who hit .395 and Alex Pena and jose Casal who hit .371 and .328 respectively. juan Uribarri a .351 hitter and Bernie Pena rounded out the Wolverine attack.

'Mo' Rodriguez, Orlando Fernandez, and Manny and juan Rodriguez also played part in the Wolverines many successes.

Despite the excellent hitting attack the Wolverines would have gone nowhere without a highly talented pitching staff George de Ia Hoz (8-4), Alex Pena (6-3) and relief man juan Uribarri made up a pitching staff which had an earned run avg. of under 2.00. De La Hoz who led the pitchers in strikeouts, set a team record for most strikeouts in a game.

The Wolverines got off to a slow start with a 3-2 record, but thanks to an excellent pitching staff and great hitters the club picked up the pace and won 14 of its last 17 games. Of the clubs 7 losses, five were by one run. With only four seniors leaving, the players are optimistic about their chances of going all the way in 1981.

In the J.V. division Belen had another outstanding season. The 1979-80 squad made up for last season's record of 7-17-1. Coached again by Mike Crudele the "Baby Wolverines" finished with a 12-4 record.

The team got off to a jumping start winning 9 games in a row. In the first game Belen traveled to St. Thomas Apostle school and showed their talents by overpowering St. Thomas 22-1. The "Baby Wolverines" then recorded their first shut-out defeating Miami Christian 15-0. The team then traveled to Fort Lauderdale to play against Pine Crest and Belen again showed its dominance by defeating them 6-1.

The club then traveled to Corpus Christi and after a tough game Belen emerged victorious with a 3-2 victory. Belen then played against St. Theresa, bombarding them 20-1.

Until now the "Baby Wolverines" had scored 66 runs and only allowed their opponents to score 5 times in five games. Belen played Epiphany in a tough game beating them 10-8. The "Baby Wolverines" traveled to Pine Crest again and defeated them 4-3. The game against Ransom was won by forfeit. Belen then played a very tough Westminister but showed it supremacy by defeating them 6-5.

Belen then suffered its first loss losing to Loyola 2-7. Belen recovered quickly, however, to defeat Gulliver 6-1 and Westminster 5-3. This was followed by three losses in a row, to Miami Country Day 3-5, Epiphany 8-9, and Gulliver 4-12. Then getting their act together the team gave Coach Mike Crudele a final victory over Ransom of 17-2.

At season's end, Belen had scored 133 runs and allowed their opponents to score 51. The team owed this record to their talent and Coach Crudele's unlimited dedication. The M.V.P. was awarded to jorge Perez and the Coach's Award went to joaquin Novoa.

Wolverine Track 1980

This year the Wolverine track team began a season that was filled somewhat with uncertainty. After losing ten graduating seniors last year, the squad was left young and lacking in experience. Nevertheless, in spite of these odds they were able to deliver one of the most impressive seasons ever. Hard work, determination, and the utmost dedication certainly gave the Wolverines the necessary edge to overcome many obstacles.

Coaching the team for his ninth season, Carlos Barquin with the aid of Paco Ruiz guided the squad through tough training sessions to finish the year with a record of twelve wins and three losses. Early losses to La Salle and Pace made the team realize that it would be an uphill struggle to prove themselves. Winning the Ransom Relays by nine points over La Salle was a definite step in that direction. Unfortunately, towards the end inexperience took its toll. The team managed to round its season with a second place at the Gulfstream Athletic Conference and a third place at the district finals.

The group responsible for this amazing season only contained five seniors: Billy Candela, Vince Garcia, Luis Mechoso and All Conference qualifiers Carlos Batlle and Alfredo Rabassa. Outstanding contributions were also made by MVP Angel Montero, Julis Gonzalez, Jorge Blanco, and Jorge Powell. Perhaps the most surprising efforts were turned in by eighth grader Juan Carlos "J. C." Alvarez, who shattered the school's two mile record.

With so much young talent surging up from the ranks, Belen has an extremely promising future in track.

Continuing its prestigious tradition of helping the needy and the community, the Christian Youth Group, in the 1979-1980 school year, accomplished its goal; to help those who are in need, both economically and spiritually, and to strive for a better more understanding and peaceful community. It wasn't an easy task. Meetings were often put off due to scholastic and social reasons; never-the-less, the perseverance and hard will of its members and administration and also the unforgettable help of the school itself made it possible to happen. Among its accomplishments are the continuous help to the Brazilian "rapaz" which the group sponsors through collections around the school; a Christmas party for the children at Sunrise School; visits at nursing homes; collections and voluntary work for the Cuban refugees; besides innumerous other contributions to our society.

The Christian Youth Group is not exactly an organization. It is an example to be followed, not only by the school and its students, but by the whole community and all mankind. The feeling of being needed, of helping and loving, is a great experience and a great chance to demonstrate the potential human being inside each one of us, for loving is caring, and caring is loving.

Student Council

This year Belen has once again proved that size is not the determining factor in the effectiveness of a Student Council. Along with this organization's accomplishments in school, Belen served as President of the Florida Association of Student Councils, a great honor in itself. This honor did not come without its price, as council members worked long and hard for both the F.A.S.C. and within the school. Examples of Belen's work in the F.A.S.C. included their meetings with Florida State Legislators and Gov. Graham. Belen also managed to visit every district in Florida, something never before accomplished by an F.A.S.C. president. Many things were done for school as well as in the state. Among the projects this year were the "Goombay Party", two student government days, Slave Day, a talent show, and overall successful dances. Student Council also managed to aid several clubs financially. The Tombola was the most successful ever, with student's sales of raffle tickets exceeding $32,000. All this could not have been done without the dedicationof the class officers, and Student Co unci I officers Carlos Batlle, Henry Mendia, Frank de Ia Camara, Javier Arellano, Albert Hernandez, Vince Garcia, and the moderator, Armando Rodriguez.

BASES

In the summer of 1979 the basic Belen Astronomy Club underwent extensive changes in size and organization to what many believe today, is for the better.

The most basic goal was that of expanding Belen's scientific horizons, and this required implementing more than just the study of astronomy. At this point a few people decided on the name BASES (Belen Academy for the Sciences of Earth and Space). This name just about covered it all. -The next step was to designate new clubs which applied to that name and organize them under one governing body, which was a step in itself. So came about the corporate structure which operates and manages the organizations activities.

This first year has been a lot of trial and error, and mostly involved pioneering and foundation laying. One of the more important activities this year was that of raising funds to buy new equipment; which really got some clubs off the ground. Some examples are a solar-radiotelescope, a computerized weather station, a computer, along with other items too numerous to mention. All of this was made possible thanks to Fr. Cartaya's resourcefulness in obtaining private donations and the sincere generosity of these private donors, who selflessly gave to the school and our organization

When BASES was finally established the student reaction was one of surprise and bewilderment, for nothing such as this had previously existed in Belen. Many did come and were funneled into the divisions which interested them most. But since BASES was still new and experimental, attendance dropped, leaving behind only those who found a real interest in what BASES had to offer.

In sum, BASES began with a group of very dedicated people-·that had unparalled enthusiasm which will surely carry forward a great tradition of excellence, in the community of Belen.

Astronomy Club

The Belen Astronomy Club has been around for two years, and this year it has become a branch of the newly formed organization of BASES. The first year of the Astronomy Club started off late, but had quite a few members to its name. With Fr. Cartaya's drive and high goals, the second year for the Astronomy Club was even better. Many things were done throughout the course of the year, through the careful work done by the director of the club, Robert Orta, and the moderator, Fr. Cartaya.

For those of you who are asking what this year's Astronomy Club brought, here are a few examples: Regular meetings were scheduled every week, in which something was planned. Films were shown on a few occasions with much discussion afterward, followed by the use of the telescope Some students did projects on certain fields of interest. For several months a sunspot count was run and was correlated with the radio telescope.

This year brought many new members and many things to do. Only but a few have been mentioned above. The club received an eight inch telescope which will be operative in the coming year. With the help of the leaders of the groups and the members cooperation, the Astronomy Club will continue to prosper, along with B.A.S.E.S.

Weather Club

The Belen Weather Club, one of the satellite clubs of B.A.S.E.S., is involved in the education and research in the field of meteorology Another of its primary responsibilities is to inform the students of the daily weather, tropical disturbances, and other related weather activities. Its members are a dedicated group who often spend time everyday researching with the aid of a tremendous array of weather instruments. Once a week, the members meet to share their research and learn about the many different aspects of weather. Not only do they learn about weather itself but also how weather relates to astronomy and many other areas.

The Weather Club this year also displays a couple thousand dollars worth of equipment. just some of the equipment that is available to the members is a weather computer which contains high and low temperature readings, wind velocity and direction, barometric pressure and change, and so on. Also available is a teletype machine which gives weather summaries of areas around the world and specific weather developments of areas affecting our local climate, a psychrometer which measures humidity, barometers, rain gauge, thermometers, and a computer which stores our daily information that can be recalled when needed for research. There is indeed plenty here for the weather novice and enthusiast alike with still more to come

The Weather Club not only conducted research and listened to lectures but it also participated in field trips. One of which was to the National Weather Service in Coral Gables, home of the National Hurricane Center The Weather Club does not stop there however. It will meet during the summer, which is the most exciting time of year, tracking hurricanes and other related activities. Only truly dedicated individuals can keep up with the many activities of the Belen Weather Club.

For centuries man has been intrigued by the marvels of our oceans. Due to this great interest in the oceans, the branch of science called Oceanography was born. Oceanography covers a wide variety· of areas which include the chemical, physical, biological, and geological processes of the oceans.

In what other place can these processes be observed better than in South Florida? As a result of our location, the Oceanography Club at Belen was founded. The main objective of the club is for its members to become physically aware of the unique aquatic environment with which South Florida is blessed. Such awareness will come from activities like field-trips, movies, lectures and special projects. The Oceanography Club will bring its members in direct contact with one of the many environments which surrounds them on this magnificent planet "Earth."

Rocketry Club

The Belen Rocketry Club, originating into B.A.S.E. on january 1, 1980, has completed its first year with success. The Club set as its goals, the education in the field of rocketry of all its members, and the eventual building and flying of an individual rocket by each individual member. Although new and unconquerred, the club's launchings were fun and exciting, and next year promises to be just as good, if not

Psychology Clu b

With the coming of Dr. Montserrat, Belen found a new and extraordinary experience as well as a different and exciting challenge. A new club was created, with the purpose of enhancing our lives through the knowledge of ourselves.

With this motif in mind, the Psychology Club was originated. New techniques and methods, with the basic principle of learning how to deal with our everyday problems and worries, were taught. Meetings were composed of interesting lectures as well as radical experiences. Dedication was seen as the year ended, and it is hoped that next year will be just as successfu I.

Forensics

Composed of only nine members, the smallest ever, the Belen Forensics team was not able to match the victories of past years. However, by the end of the season six of the members had received several awards at the various tournaments held in local schools throughout the year. One member qualified for the National Catholic Forensics Championships held in Boston, Mass .

The season was highlighted by the Gulliver Prep. Tournament. Here, Damian Pardo, Sergio Gonzalez, Eusebio Garcia, won first place for their group interpretation presentation Herman Lademann also placed first and was followed by Xavier Iglesias in second place in the category of oral interpretation. At other tournaments, Joseph Civantos, consistently placed in the top three in Extemporaneous Speaking.

At the end of the season, Herman Lademann qualified for the National Competition. There he distinguished himself by being the only member of the Miami delegation to reach the quarter finals in Oral Interpretation, and finishing in the top fifteen out of over one hundred competitors.

Along with their moderator, Ms. Georgina Garcia, the team hopes to have a very successful season next year.

Members: Damian Pardo , Herman Lademann, Xavier Iglesias, Joseph Civantos , Henry Gomez, Martin Casuso, Eusebio Garcia, Sergio Gonzalez, Joseph Pubillones.

For the first time in several years VINCAM was distributed on a regular basis. Moderator Valerie Giroux and a staff of talented writers headed by editor Hermann lademann demonstrated the benefits Belen could obtain from a good newspaper.

Assistant editor, Ronnie Ramos, and staff writers such as Manny and Mike Fernandez, George Zulueta, and Guillermo Gonzalez, provided students with information about subjects of local and national interest, Student Counci I elections, and a wide variety of school activities.

Feature editor, Manny Utset, and several other feature writers wrote interesting stories about bands, guest speakers, teachers, and popular trends. A feature on Southern Trust, a local rock band, won acclaim in a local journalism contest. Billy Candela's sports department reported on Belen's many successful clubs. Editorials gave the newspaper's management a chance to express its opinions and in turn students were encouraged to incorporate their opinions in letters to the editors.

Dr. and Mrs. de Lamerens

The B.A.S.E.S. organization would like to thank its members for their dedication in 1979-80 and looks forward to a more productive 1980-81.

The theme of this yearbook was 118elen is the key to ...". We all think of the future, bvt the future results from the past. This book, I hope, will be the key to the past, a book of memories. I look back and see six years of great memories. The best of all was this past year, my senior year, and I appreciate the honor of being able to edit this year's book.

An honor it was, but easy it was not. As in all things, problems did develop. From such problems evolved delays. As each delay passed, so did a deadline. I think I can be sure in saying that Belen has never met a deadline with its publisher, and I am not one to break traditions. As you can see, however, the book did make it to Dallas and has returned in one piece to Miami. ·

I am happy to say that this book is the biggest and the best ever produced by Belen. So many people deserve thanks. A special thanks goes to Chris Migliaccio, our advisor, for his time and effort. Mainly because of Chris, we were able to get many new ideas that allowed us to develop new themes and innovative concepts in photography and special effects. He was aided, as were we all, ever so often by our loyal TPC representative Ken Thornberry, who was always around when we called on him for assistance. All the editors deserve much credit and I hope that they have received a great deal of satisfaction upon seeing their ideas realized in this book. The staff upon which we relied so heavily on also deserves a warm thanks. This includes photographers, typists, layout people, and writers.

One would never believe how many people and how many things have to come together to produce a good book. The better the group, the better the book. Looking over this yearbook one can see the quality of the people that have helped in assemblying it.

I am proud to have been associated with these people and I thank my parents for giving me the chance to be here at Belen and thus a part of this book. The student body and faculty are the reasons this book was produced. God's love has brought us all together and I hope this book will keep us that way. Let this book be the key not to the past but to the memories of the way we were and will be. Forever.

Love and thanks to all, Editor-in-chief
