FOREWORD

And a youth said, speak to us of Friendship. And he answered, saying:

He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.

And he is your board and your fireside.

For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.

When you part from your friend, you grieve not; For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.

And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening ofthe spirit. For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net forth: and only the unprofitable is caught. '

And let your best be for your friend.

If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him also know its flow.

For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?

Seek him always with hours to live.

For it is his to fill your need but not your emptiness.

And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.

For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

And reach the highest of heights

The ashes of her confinement Will soon rise from Belen, like the phoenix

To the hope that

DEDICATION:

This year we celebrated the 125th anniversary of Belen - this has been a monumental educational achievement. Belen has served the student population under three flags (Spanish, Cuban, and American) and all types of political climates, economic conditions and during times of tremen, dous cultural upheaval.

Belen's long life has been made possible by the dynamic character of our educational enterprise. In our world, the 'surest way to be left behind by the times is to stand still, to be complacent, or to do something in a certain way just because "this is the way it has been done in the past.''

We certainly do not intend to sit by quietly while the challenges of the present and the futl.lre are upon us, nor do we intend to rest on our laurels, contemplating past triumphs. Our history, our tradition, our successes are functional only as a springboard to the future. We do have very solid fol.uidations - educational programs that will prepare our students to be productive builders of the world of tomorrow. A world, hopefully, in which the brotherhood of mankind will be cherished; in which the clamor for social justice will find receptive ears; in which true peace will reign.

We justify Belen's existence today by attempting fo educate the man of tomorrow; a man that will be, above all, a man-for-others.

Wolverine Football1978-1979

The Wolverine's 78 football season can be summed up as being rather frustrating. A break here and there and the Wolverine's record would have been much better than 3-7.

The Wolverines opened the 78 football season by playing Curley, a AAA school. A blocked punt, which was returned for a touchdown enabled Curley to win 13-0. After the opening kick-off of the following week's game against St. Andrews one could not have blamed the Wolverines if they felt like going home. St. Andrews returned the kick all the way for a touchdown to take a 6-0 lead. The Wolverines, however, rallied behind Frank de Ia Camera passes to Franz Arango and Alex de leon to win 12-6.

The Wolverine's first home game was against Ransom Everglades. Belen's defense, the "Crunch Bunch", allowed only six points but Belen's offense, the "Mean Machine" was unable to score as Belen lost 6-0. Nobody was taking the Wolverines seriously as they prepared to face undefeated Marathon. The Dolphins were favored to win by 21 points. The Wolverines, however, won 7-0 the lone score being a bomb from Frank de Ia Camera to Alex de Leon.

The Wolverine's next game was against their arch-rival La Salle. The game was billed as the "Battle of Eighth Street". Belen scored first as the first half ended as Alex de Leon drilled a beautiful thirty-five yard field goal to give Belen a 3-0 lead. La Salle, however, had the ball most of the fourth quarter deep in Belen territory. La Salle, turned away twice by a Robert Suris interception and a "Crunch Bunch" goal line stand, attempted one last-ditch drive. With Wolverine fans gathering at the end of the end-zone to view the climax to the gridiron clash, La Salle attempted a field goal but it went wide. Belen had beaten La Salle on their home field!!

The victory was short lived, however, as the Wolverines had to prepare to face Westminster. The Warriors surprised Belen and won 17-0. The Wolverine's record slipped to 3-3. Belen's next game was against Pine Crest the third ranked team in AA. The Panthers capitalized on Belen errors and won 33-0.

The Wolverines still had hopes for a winning season as they prepared to play Cora1 Shores. The 5-1 Hurricanes scored first to take a 7-0 lead but Belen drove to the Shore's one yard line before half time. Twice Belen had apparently scored, once on a pass and once on a quarterback sneak but twice the officials ruled no score. The Wolverines, not believing their eyes, left the field in frustration as the half ended. In the second half Kenny Irigoyen caught a touchdown pass as Belen tied the score. Since the game ended tied, a Kansas tie-breaker was played. Coral Shores won by a score of 13-7. Belen had lost the game and their hopes for a winning season.

The Wolverine's next game was against Dade Christian. The first half ended in a 7-7 tie but in the second half poor playing conditions dictated the game's outcome as Dade Christian returned an interception for a touchdown and stopped a Belen drive late in the game. Belen's record slipped to a 3-0 as Belen lost 14-7.

Belen was doomed to a losing season but the Wolverines showed their pride against Loyola in the season finale. Loyola took a 6-0 lead but an Alex de leon field goal closed the gap at 6-3. Towards the end of the game the "Mean Machine" drove to the La Salle one yard line. Twice Oscar Kramer crossed the plane of the goal line and twice the referee ruled no score as Belen lost 6-3 to close the season at 3-7.

Despite the losing season every Belen student should be proud of the Wolverines. Belen earned respectability as a tough football team. The '79 football season promises to be a great one for Belen. Let's congratulate Coach Hewett for his work and wish him luck as he helps the Wolverines prepare for 1979.

Wo l verine Cross Country 1978-1979

The 1978 Cross-Country season was one of the greatest in Belen's history. Belen's great runners and their coach Carlos Barquin won victory after victory for the school. They won the right to go to the state meet and finished in second place.

Belen's promising season started with a victory at the first meet in which Belen got 15 points, a perfect score, and the second place team Dade Christian got 66 points. (In Cross Country lowest score wins.) The top runners at this meet were Juan Rodriguez and Billy Candela, who tied for the first place. At the second meet Belen again defied their opponents. They won the meet 18 to 50 vs. St. Brendans.

At the Westminister Christian Invitational, Belen came in second place to Westminister Christian. At this meet, Juan Rodriguez was the 7th place runner and was the first Belen runner to cross the line. Even though our first runner came in at 7th place, Belen went on to finish second place because its slowest runner came in at the 46th place out of 98 runners.

On Sept. 26 Belen ran against Pace and defeated them 20-49. The first place runner was from Pace but Belen got 2-6 place. The 2-6 place runners were (in order) Juan Rodriguez, Billy Candela, Carlos de la Cruz, Alfredo Rabassa, and Humberto Hernandez.

On Sept. 29, Belen placed second behind Gold Coast. The top 3 runners were Juan Rodriguez, Billy Candela, and Alfredo Rabassa.

On the Oct. 3 meet Belen lost to Curley by a heartbreaking 3 points.

At a meet on Oct. 6 Belen beat Ransom 22-37. Belen defeated St. Andrews 23-34. The only defeat of the day was Westminister Christian's win over Belen 23-32.

At the District Championship Belen received yet another chance at conquering a 1st place victory but came in 2nd place to Clearwater Central Catholic. The first runner for Belen to cross the line was Carlos de la Cruz who came in 13th place. The second of Belen who was in 21st place was Juan Rodriguez. The 3rd who came in 25th place was Amadeo Lopez-Castro.

The season ended on a winning note as Belen finished 2nd place in state competition for the first time. Hopefully, next year Belen will be 1st in state but after such a perfect season what more can we ask for?

This year, as a result of the efforts of the Science Dept., Cardiopulmonary Rescucitation (CPR) courses were started at Belen.

CPR was first taught to the seniors of the Advanced Placement Biology Class and the response from the rest of the students was so great, that the class was later expanded so that all grades interested could participate. The course was taught and later developed for Belen by senior George Fernandez, who in addition to being a certified CPR instructor, is on the Youth Committee & Board of Directors of the Red Cross.

The course is designed to teach proper methods of sustaining the life support systems of the people who have suffered respiratory and/or cardiac arrest, and how to recognize early warning signals associated with heart attacks.

Homecoming- 1979

This year's activities began with a beautiful Mass celebrated in the school yard. Many parents and neighbors of the school attended along with the student body and contributed to the feeling of community.

More vigorous activities commenced with the traditional Senior- Faculty softball game. For the first time in recent history, the Seniors won in a 17-8 landslide. The long ball proved to be the Faculty's downfall. However, in the newly-added volleyball match, the Faculty dominated the serves and beat every Senior team that played against them.

The Homecoming Dance was held at the Konover Hotel on November 8. A rock band, Southern Trust, and a disc jockey, Disco Dream kept the couples busy all night. All who attended agreed that the combination of rock and disco provided something for everyone. The mediocre food was forgotten as few people strayed long from the dance floor.

Close-Up

Close-Up is an annual event for Belen Juniors and Seniors. They go along with other schools in Miami and the country, to Washington and see what goes on behind the scenes in our government. Our Senators and Representatives speak to them and tell them what they are doing. They also learn the tricks of the government trade and what influences decisions. But learning of the present doesn't help without learning of the past. They taught how and why things were done in the past as well as shown where major events took place.

Close-Up has its fun side as well, visiting monuments, watching a play, and getting together in 1. the gameroom. Going with other schools makes the atmosphere much more enjoyable. Singing on the bus, last minute skits, and just sharing what 2. we have learned in the day with the group, makes the trip complete.

Mr. Patrick Collins, head of the History and Social Studies Department, has given Belen the opportunity to be involved in this program. A program full of fun, culture, and history.

Wolverine Soccer 1978-79

The Wolverine soccer squad enjoyed a very successful season. Coached by Jorge Dieppa, the team started slowly, but soon established themselves as one of the toughest teams in the Conference.

Season highlights included wins over last year's Conference Champs, St. Andrews as Freddy Poey scored a last minute goal. Wins over Ransom (5-1), Marathon (7-1), and Dade Christian (5-1) showed Belen's ability to score at will yet limit the opponent to a single goal. Belen advanced to the district final after defeating Loyola and St. Brendan to play Ransom. After regulation time ended with the score at 2-2, a record seven overtime periods were played before Ransom scored on a magnificent passing play to defeat Belen 3-2. .

With goalie Alfredo Rabassa and strong play from several Sophomore returnees, Coach Dieppa hopes to continue the improvement of his young team.

Once again, Belen' s auditorium filled to capacity with student projects that ranged from molecular models to ecological succession on a volcano to the chemistry of terrorism. Bridge competition was the toughest ever but freshman George Sainz won for the third straight year with a bridge that held 52 lbs. Belen's four County Fair contestants each brought home an award:

Social Studies Fair

Blood, guts, war, pyramids, castles, History of Belen One could relive it all and much more in the Third Annual Belen Social Studies Fair. The fair was once again a success due to the work of Mr. Rodriguez and the History Club.

A project titled "Food Resources" by Alberto Fernandez, Gene Hernandez and Jorge Lopez Garcia was the winning project in the 7th and 8th grade division.

Antolin Blanco's project on the Aztec pyramids won the 9th and 10th grade division and received the highest score in the fair. Alfredo Rabassa's replica of a courtroom won the upper division.

Wolverine Bask e tball-19 78-1979

Despite the fact that the Wolverines ended the 1979 basketball season on a disappointing note, a 65-63 loss to La Salle in the District 16AA playoffs, the Wolverines season as a whole was nothing short of spectacular.

The Wolverines were an explosive team but still had a well balanced attack led by the play of Kika and Tony Fernandez, Manny Leon, Gaston Cantens, Francisco Arellano, and Ralph de los Reyes.

The Wolverines only losses, were to Columbus, Deerborne and Pace, all very highly ranked teams in their respective divisions.

The Wolverines did, however, beat Deerborne in one of their meetings 74-67. Belen played well against La Salle defeating the Royals 77-60, 73-53 and 84-76. The Wolverines broke the 100 point mark against Ransom, defeating the Raiders 103-59.

The high point of the season was not a district game but rather a game against Pace, a team led by Dade County's leading scorer Ted Mizerak. The Wolverines led until the third quarter when Pace took a seven point advantage. The Wolverines, led by the foulshooting of Francisco Arellano and the shooting of Kika and Tony Fernandez, closed the gap and took a two point lead. With eight seconds left, Ted Mizerak tied the score for Pace. Manny Leon took the ball down court and took a jump-shot from the top of the key. As the buzzer sounded the ball went through the net and the Belen fans in the Dade South gym jumped all over the players.

Belen won its next six games including an impressive victory over St. Andrew's, the only team expected to give Belen competition in the 16AA playoffs.

In the first state poll Belen was ranked 3 but then came the district playoffs. Belen was to play La Salle in the Wolverines first district playoffs. The Wolverines built up a 17-8 lead but La Salle came back and to the shock of the Wolverines' players and fans, Belen lost 65-63. It was the first time La Salle beat Belen in four years. Belen did, however, win the Gulfstream conference for the fourth straight year.

Despite the frustrating finish Belen students have something to be proud of. Later, Kika, Tony and Manny Leon were named to the All Conference Squad and Coach Ferreiro was named the Miami News Coach of the Year.

This year's J.V. Basketball Team went 17-6. Although it was a winning season it was the most disappointing season for Coach Ruben Marrero, this beirig his worst record at Belen.

The team was composed of outstanding players and their strong point was height.

The team captains for the 78-79 season were Fausto Alvarez and Albert Hernandez. The muscle underneath was provided by first year players Peter Perez and freshman Pablo Alvarez. When the team needed outside shooting they would turn to the sweet soft touch of Bernie Cantens. The ball handling and play making was handled by Ted Garcia and Ricky Retamar. Other members of the team were Mario Solares, Jorge Alvarez, Tomas Tomas, Carlos Draschner, and Julio Gonzalez.

The 79 baby Wolverines were undefeated, 20-0, in regular season play. The team was led by the playing ability of Antony Grant, Julio Varela, Manny Cambo, Dennis Montalbano, Frank Rosa, Orlando Cabeza, Eddie Fuller, and Tomas Gonzalez-Diego. Other players included; Ramon Torralba, Jose Roca, Flori Puentes, Robert Toricella, Eddie Prieto, and Alfred Consuegra. The high point of the season was when the team won the G.A.C. championship under the coaching of Carlos Perreira, a Belen alumnus. Since we were the only undefeated team in the conference, there was no need for a playoff to decide the winners.

For one hundred and seven years Belen Jesuit was one of the finest preparatory schools in Cuba. The alur.1ni were and are leaders in both business and professional fields

In 1961, the Castro government forced the closure of Belen Jesuit as a Cuban. educational institution With all facilities and materials confiscated , e Jesuits brought the tradition and ideals of Belen Jesuit to a new home , Miami and ·the United States Once again the United States has provided a new beginning for individuals who could no longer operate freely in their own society.

For the past seventeen years Belen Jesuit has grown while enduring small and inadequate facilities. During this time, plans for the BELEN JE S

UIT INTERCULTURAL

CENTER were finalized . These plans combine the unique educational needs of Miami with the Jesuit character of educational excellence. The following is a documentation in word and design Of these dreams, plans and desires.

Belen Jesuit Prep.

Havana, Cuba

1925-1961

THE JESUIT SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE

The BELEN JESUIT INTERCULTURAL CENTER will be a modern well designed educational and service facility for students and citizens alike.

The minimum goal needed to complete the Center is $2,000,000.

A sense of world citizenship, intellectual, and emotional awareness, that we are one planet and one Humanity, with total responsibility for the future of both.

CLASSROOMS

The basic environment for the teaching of man

Well designed with adequate space and lighting, these instructional areas will provide the backbone of Belen Jesuit's educational process. They replace the overcrowded converted classrooms now in use. Not luxurious classrooms but functional and efficient.

COURTYARD OF THE AMERICAS

In all recorded history no region of the world has enjoyed such cooperation and productivity as the Americas.

The Courtyard will honor men like Washington, Marti, Bolivar, Jefferson and others who have contributed greatly to the peaceful progress of the Americas.

GYMNASIUM

Mind and body together, create the total man.

A complete physical plant, one which will give Belen's fine athletes, facilities comparable to their record of championships.

Belen's teams currently have no athletic facilities to play or practice in.

In phase II of Belen's development program a full size Gymnasium will be built enabling the Wolverines to finally become the home team.

HUMAN RESOURCE PAVILION

This area will provide an enlarged opportunity for the development of a sincere appreciation for human diversity and an understanding of others and their respective cultures.

The Human Resource Pavilion will be opened to the general public as a service to Miami's cosmopolitan population.

In the tradition of Finlay, Edison and Vines, these Ia boratories are dedicated.

Traditionally the area where techniques obtained in the classrooms are put to practical application. l·n essence, an area to give the student an understanding of the physical, chemical and biological make-up of the world he lives in.

Three modern laboratories physics - biologychemistry, will replace the single cramped area now used for all three sciences.

2 LANGUAGE LABORATORIES

Two fully equipped areas designed to study both the English and Spanish languages. This will enable Belen Jesuit graduates to be fully prepared for careers in Miami's bilingual community.

THE DECISION IS OURS

Until now the administration and Board of Advisors of Belen Jesuit have carried the responsibility of making the BELEN JESUIT INTERCULTURAL CENTER a reality. They have done the research; sought and retained the required consultants, and received approval from all regulatory agencies.

They have brought the spirit and ideals of Belen in Havana to Miami. They have endured seventeen years of overcrowded, inadequate facilities to reach this moment of destiny.

Now it is our responsibility to complete this unique human endeavor.

We stand at the threshold of history, it is our support which will dictate its course.

In accordance with plans to raise money for the building of the new school facility, the Belen Athletic Department sponsored a basketball game between the Faculty I Alumni and the Miami Dolphins.

Belen started the evening on the right foot as the Wolverines-over-35 defeated the LaSalle team in a runaway. In the main event, Belen hopes for a double win were dashed as the well conditioned Dolphins wore down a weaker Belen team led by Perreira, de la Vega, Palacio, Hewett, and Marrero. Coach Ferreiro substituted frequently and the freshness of the subs helped to hold Cornelius, Harris, Matheson, Strock, Bokamper, and Jones under 100 pts.

The game was well played, despite the final score of 99-78, and provided the huge crowd with a night of excitement. Fans of Belen and the Dolphins packed the Dade South facility and helped raise $2,200 for the new school.

WOLVERINE TENNIS 1978-79

As in recent years, the tennis team was coached by Mr. Pat Collins, former tennis player himself.

The team was anchored by the play of Emilio Solernou, Armando Gutierrez, Frank Menendez and Rickey Martinez. The Wolverines finished fourth in the Gulfstream Athletic Conference with 4 victories including an impressive win over LaSalle. For the first time in Belen history, a player advanced to the quarter finals at the District Meet. Unfortunately, Rickey Martinez lost a tough match and Belen hopes for a champion were thwarted for this year. Emilio Solernou, the star of the LaSalle victory, was voted Most Valuable Player. Belen hopes for the future rest on the shoulders of Martinez and freshman Albert Hermida, but Coach Collins looks forward to a strong crop of new studentathletes to continue the Belen tradition.

Wolverine Track 1978-1979

The Wolverines began the '79 track season soon after Christmas. The track team worked hard during a January cold snap, but the work eventually paid off. The team didn't have a real field and once again used the parking lot at Crandon Park as their training site. Though obstacles hampered the runners, the track team felt better when they defeated teams that had real track courses. For the eighth year Carlos Barquin coached the track team.

The season began in a dual meet against Westminister. The meet set the tone for the '79 season as the Wolverines won easily and the 440 relay team of Jorge Blanco, Luis Sarmiento, Mike Suarez and Robert Suris, set a school record. The team also faired well in the Ransom Relays finishing second only to Westminister Academy. To everyone's surprise, the team did very well in the All Catholic Meet, a track meet featuring all the Catholic high school teams from South Florida. In the All Catholic Meet Alfredo Rabassa set a record of twelve feet for the pole vault.

The team won, for the first time, the Gulfsteam Athletic Conference title. The team came back after being disqualified from the 330 yard hurdles to win by one half of a point. Amadeo Lopez-Castro set a record of 51 seconds in the 440.

The next week consisted of hard training for the upcoming district meet. Members of the Belen Squad qualified for four events in the Florida AA meet.

Perhaps Jorge Blanco best summed up the 79 season when he said, "As a result of long and hard practices and a great deal of dedication, the '79 season will be remembered as one of Belen's best."

Wolverine Baseball 1978-79

Young and inexperienced players made up the bulk of the 79 baseball squad. The team, coached by David Hewett, had only two seniors: team captain Kika and Tony Fernandez.

The team was led by the hitting of Jorge Alvarez, Kika Fernandez, Tony Fernandez, Jose Casal and Frank Mora. Jorge de la Hoz was the ace of the Belen pitching staff with five of Belen's seven wins and 55 strike outs to his credit. The Wolverines also got strong pitching from Alex Pena.

Two victories against Gulliver, a 19-11 victory over Ely, and a victory at Dade Christian got the Wolverines off to a quick start. Towards the middle of the season the Wolverines fell into a slump during which they would lose 11 of their next twelve games. The squad however, came back and won two of their last three games. In the district 16AA playoffs the Wolverines lost to Pine Crest despite a four run rally.

The three players who made up the nucleus of the Belen hitting attack reaped post season honors. Sophomore Jorge Alvarez who had a solid .364 batting average was named to the All City baseball team. Kika Fernandez, who had a consistently high batting average of .354, joined Tony Fernandez who had a .350 batting and Jorge Alvarez on the All Conference squad.

Though the baseball team will miss the play of Kika and Tony Fernandez, with a squad of young determined players one can only expect productive baseball seasons in the near future.

Jorge Alvarez summed up the feelings of the Belen players when he said, "Though our record was 7-17-1 you must also consider that the team lost five games by one run."

The 7th and 8th grade baseball squad was led by the hitting of young players such as Joe de Goti, the club's leading hitter, Joe Moreiras, Roger Ribas, Juan Quintero and Luis Urarte. Joaquin Novoa was the leading hitter ..

The Baby Wolverines had victories against Sheridan Christian, Miami Christian and Ranso1n. The team played well against teams like Loyola and St. Theresa but were unable to win against those teams.

Mike Crudelle, Coach of the squad said, "Though a young and small team, The Baby Wolverines showed the potential to become winners in the Belen tradition."

Tombola 1979

The Tombola, held at Sts. Peter and Paul School for the first time, proved to be the most extravagant ever. With rides such as the Super Loop, Swiss Bob, and Discoteque, festival goers were provided with plenty of excitement. One observer remarked, "The rides looked scary but really were great f I"un.

As usual, the classes had their own kioskos. The smell of "arroz con pollo" and "pan con lechon" encouraged many to enter the cafeteria to sample the fine Spanish and Cuban cuisine served up by Jimmy Perez's hardworking group of parents.

Raffle sales netted over 29,000. Mr. Nunez coordinated this difficult task to provide money for the scholarship program. The grand prize winner drove away a 1979 Volvo Viking.

The palm-enclosed dance floor provided the latest Rock and Disco hits for partyers to boogie the night away.

This year's Tombola was a grand way to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Belen. From the planning of the ticket sales to the setting up of the booths to the riding of the last ride, the Festival owed its success to the hard work of the faculty, parents, and students. The philosophy of the Tambala is to help students at Belen and this year the proof of the dedication to this idea was very much in evidence.

Sophomore Prom

The 1979 Belen Sophomore Prom was held at the Everglades Hotel. Without the work of Jorge Blanco, Fausto Alvarez and Albert Hernandez, the dance would not have been a success.

The crowd was entertained by a Fort Lauderdale band, Lattitude, and by Sophomores Jerry and Ricky Diaz, which vvere the disc jockeys, on the Everglades Rooftop. Everyone had a great time as they danced to the music of Lattitude and Disco Dream.

Towards the end of the evening, awards were given out. Ricky Martinez was awarded "Chester of the Year" while Paco Garcia was awarded "Mecha of the Year" and Alberto Quinantes was given "Disco of the Year".

The festivities of this year's Senior Prom began early with cocktails at Luis Sarmiento's house. Here the people indulged in champagne and chocolate cake, and the small party generally set the mood for the night. After this, a long caravan started for the actual prom at the Coconut Grove Hotel. The caravan was interrupted, however, by a minor incident when Reinaldo Gutierrez's car was engulfed ·in flames. This slowed down the caravan, as rumors of an explosion prompted by a terrorist attack spread, but the fun soon continued. No worry, Reinaldo and Claudia, his girlfriend made it to the prom safely in Reinaldo's spare "BUG."

The mood at the prom was relatively calm during dinner, as Rapid Transit played "dinner music". This quickly changed, however, and the band exploded with fast moving, hard rock and roll. The power of the music carried the momentum of the partying until about 1 A.M., and then the couples moved on to the next stage.

The third part of the Prom festivities was a party at Tony Villamil's house. The party was dis..: appointingly dry, but the music from Southern Trust was excellent as they continued the beat of the totally "ROCK" prom. At the party, some of the couples continued to enjoy dancing, as others enjoyed the privacy of nearby foliage. The party continued until about five in the morning, and the couples then went on to further, yet independent activities. Some went to Key Biscayne to watch the sunrise, others went to various restaurants to eat breakfast, and others just went home "early." The majority of the people ended up going home about seven.

In general it was a fun evening, that will add to the nice memories of our Senior year.

The Belen Forensics program began the year with an inexperienced team and without a Moderator. Despite the doubts about matching their past years successes, the team worked hard and long, and were indeed rewarded with many successes. At the District Meet, Herman Lademann and Damian Pardo qualified for the State Meet along with Pedro Alvarez and the team of Hernandez, Oliva, Sanchez, Framer and Hernandez.

At the State Meet in Tampa, Pedro Alvarez placed 2nd and Hermann Lademann placed 5th in tough competition. One more obstacle was to be overcome in order to qualify for the National Forensics Championship: the Catholic Forensics League Championship held at Pinecrest School on March 31. Only 2 Belen students survived this ordeal: Damian Pardo (Declamation) and Hermann Lademan (Dramatics). Accompanied to Milwaukee, Wisconsin by Moderator Ms. Garcia, the two were to be matched against the best in America. Belen Wins Florida Association of Student Council Elections

The auditorium was packed with over 850 students. The tension rose as representatives from 115 schools in Florida cast their votes. As the vote counting ended, pandemonium erupted as Belen was announced as the 1980 President of the Florida Association of Student Councils!

This happy event occurred as a result of a long and hard-fought campaign. Ten students orchestrated the vote soliciting. Juan Oramus provide the posters and artwork. The publications were prepared by Tony Tarafa, Frankie Menendez, Pat Clancey, Henry Garriga, Henry Mendia, Fausto Martin, and Vince Garcia. Carlos Batlle delivered an impassioned speech at the Convention and Frank Civantos provided the experience needed to make sure all angles were covered.

Despite strong competition from Brandon High, Belen's teamwork and guidance provided by our Man-behind-thescene, Mr. Rodriguez helped us over the highest of obstacles. As the last votes were recorded, and we realized that we actually won, we recognized that with good planning, teamwork and dedication to a common goal, we could accomplish anything! ·
