Belen Jesuit Prep- Miami, Florida
Once again I am happy to greet all of you from the pages of the Yearbook, after having gathered the fruits of another year at Belen- for many of you, your last.
You have, during this ·past year, acquired the best and most permanent type of wealth -education; that wealth that remains always with you, and nothing can take away. This is why your parents have sacrificed themselves to send you to Belen.
As all of God's gifts, the gift of an education carries with it a heavy responsibility: the responsibility of using your newly-acquired knowledge for the benefit of others and for the betterment of the human condition. Your success as Christian men will be judged by how well you discharge that responsibility.
We had many successes this past year. We could mention our basketball season, our forensics triumphs, the fine job of our Student Council at the state level, the recordbreaking festival, or many other fields; but one area that I am particularly proud of is the advance we have made in our social work programs. These programs help to teach us all the immediacy of the proplems we rDUSt face, and help train us to become active Christian citizens.
May your lives be an example for othersan example they feel motivated to follow.
Felipe Arroyo, S.J. President

"Fantastic! Terrific! Unmatched!" These were just a few of the many positive responses Vincam received from students who were asked to define the results of Homecoming Week in one word. For some mysterious reason, the Wolverine's victory against Ransom the Saturday prior to the Homecoming Week gave a sense of hope and excitement to most of the student body. The week ahead appeared to be bright, and sure enough, it turned out exactly as expected. Although most of us realize this, many of us do not know the reasons behind its success.
First of all, we owe a great deal of appreciation to the Student Council for its intensive planning and hard work throughout this school year which made Homecoming Week's success possible. For those of you who attended Belen last year, an important change was noticeable- there was a lot more spirit in the school. Students actively participated in all the week's events and thanks to the Administration's open-minded policy in student affairs.
"Grub Day" was revived as an exciting part of Homecoming Week. Since there was no school on Friday, the Pep Rally was held on Thursday after the long morning of competition among the different divisions. Except for the fact that our cheerleaders weren't present, the Pep Rally turned out to be quite a pastime. Then came Friday- the day of our Homecoming Football game. The tension could be sensed amid the enthusiasm of our cheers as the Wolverines struggled hard to win the game. When a large crowd of Wolverine fans stampeded the field, the players knew they had done it- they had won a Homecoming game for the first time in Belen's football history. Full of spirit and exictement, that same crowd rushed to Belen to great the players as they arrived from the game. What next?
Well, onto Belen's first sock hop dance, which, as a matter of fact, turned out to be quite a swing for most. The week, however, was still not over. The "Grand Finalep took place Saturday night at the Konover Hotel in Miami Beach. There, Belen held its Homecoming Dance featuring the sounds of Babe and Disco Dreams. A nice setting, delicious tidbits, and excellent music all added to the outperformae of last year's Homecoming Dance. This was truly a great beginning for the 77-78 school year
With the spirit of previous tenth-grade classes, the 1978 Sophomores held a formal gathering which they chose to call the "First Annual Sophomore Dance." Held at the Four Ambassadors, the dance was attended by Freshmen and Sophomore students. Adding diversity to the crowd were the guests of Honor- their teachers. The night was highlighted by continuous music and non-stop dancing to the sounds of "Babe" and "Disco Dream." Feeling the heat, and giving the hustle a break, the couples proceeded to enjoy a "mouth-watering" buffet. The food and drinks went quickly, but that presented no problem as everyone soon returned to the dance floor. There, the more light-footed laid claim to space enough for their swirls and turns, while the more quiet- and interested- couples faded into the dark corners. For most interruption came too soon by way of the glaring lights signaling the end of the dance. Many couples went on to restaurants and discoteques, and the like. Such a night could not be forgotten, for only once could they appreciate being at their "Sophomore Prom."
''It was a complete success!'' were the words spoken around Belen after · it was announced that the 1978 Tom bola broke the $50,000 mark. It was doubted that the goal would be reached because Tom bola spirit did not come to Belen till a short time before the occasion. Raffle Tickets, delayed by various complications, were passed out to the students shortly before the Tombola. Chances for a successful Festival looked bleak. Credit must be given to Rev Dorta Duque, S.J. who coordinated the Tom bola, in general, and Mr. Leopolda who coordinated the ticket sales within the school. They were aware that they had begun a little late but they didn't give up hope in the students. Two weeks was all Belen needed. Students began pushing tickets on their aunts, uncles, parents, and strangers. The administrators rented the necessary equipment such as booths and many families donated prizes and food. Individual classes with the help of some others set up their booths. Other students went to companies looking ford nations.
The Seniors, meanwhile, were busy setting up the traditional dance. Sixty of them loaded into trucks- machetes in hand- and headed to Virginia Key and Key Biscayne where they abducted palm fronds to cover the "walls" of the dance floor. After stripping a great number of palms, they realized it was illegal and a "minor" chase took place on the isles. The police had no real authority over sixty machete-laden seniors, but nevertheless, they went in sixty different directions. Tom bola day came around and crowds began clustering in the "Dust Bowl" and Cafeteria to take part in the action. It was quite encouraging as the 1977 Tom bola record was broken by the end of the first day. Sunday rolled around and we could sense the multitude of people headed towards this great Festival. At the end of the night, all the food was sold out, the dance floor was still packed, and most of the booths had run out of prizes. The newly established record was smashed! Sunday alone grossed more money then the total of all of last year's Tom bola.
The money made by the Tom bola goes directly to the students in the form of financial aid. Since the goal was reached more financial aid will be available. The Tom bola is a great example of how teachers and students can work together for a worthwhile cause. Many thanks must go to the coordinators, parents, and all who helpedbut especially to the students- without whose sweat and persistence as
· salesmen, nothing would have been possible.
Frank de Ia Camara Juan-Carlos Verdeja
We had talked about it all year, yet no one really knew what it would be like. Even as the final days of school drew near, we were unaware of the event that was approaching. There we were, a small group of seniors (sixty nine to be exact) readyor almost ready- to say goodbye to Belen. But in the sad goodbye came the happy hello. The new life we would all be sharing- getting ready for tomorrow's world. What better way to start off than to be with your family, teachers, and friends. So we have it- the 1978 Commencement Exercises. All week long, anticipation had been building up to tremendous heights. At the practices you could feel an air of uneasiness and at the same time celebration. Just a few weeks before, people were "dying to get out of school." Now it seemed we wanted to stay together forever. So finally the big night rolled around and we all met in the back of the chapel. Hand shakes and embraces all held more feeling. When we looked in our companions faces we could see the times we grew up together. And so was the spirit as we gathered in line. Then, cameras started clicking, flashes started popping, people started gazing, and seniors started marching. By "two's" we filed in, ready for the mass to begin.
Inside, the church was full of new surprises. Not only did we have the honor of having Reverend Provincial Perez-Lerena, but, also Archbishop McCarthy came. (His holiness Edward McCarthy, became Archbishop of Miami when Archbishop Coleman Carroll passed on last year. Continuing in the footsteps of his predecessor he continues to support Belen and the goals and ideals of its Catholic Community.) It was all more enlightening for the step we were about to make. The mass went on smoothly, or so it seemed, and each speaker came across with his message to the graduates. But there was some confusion as to the order of the lecturer, homily, and salutatorian address. The unexpected pleasure of the Archbishop's visit caused salutatorian Juan-Carlos Verdeja to deliver his speech after the mass rather than before. The Senior Class was able to hear in his nervous voice the words which best reflected them- "We are the Champions." Then the tension really mounted as the time came for the issuing of diplomas. Alphabetically, we stood waiting for the moment that Dean of Students Leopoldo Nunez would call out our name, give our past accomplishments and our future goals. Our anxiety was
then relieved by the applause of the audience and the jubilant walk back to our pew. After the last senior was situated in his place, Mr. Nunez presented to the audience, the Graduating Class of 1978. Smiles from ear to ear, the changing sides of the. tasseles, embraces and deeply felt congratulations, were all drowned by the roar of applause. Then, Valedictorian Guillermo Garcia closed with his words and projected into the future the ambitions of us all. Juan Carlos Abelairas was awarded a plaque recognizing his outstanding service to the school community. Javier Perez-Abreu received the coveted "Senior of the Year award. Then, by two's we proceeded out, this time easier afpace. Outside, the celebration was just about to begin. Proud fathers and tearful mothers ran to see their "young man." We were altogether in the middle, laughing, talking, rejoicing with caps in the air. It seemed we all forgot the nervousness of a few minutes before. Then we proceeded to the Verdeja household for what was to begin a weekend of total partying. Our whole class cruised over to the Gables with only good times "echoing" in our minds. At the party the bartenders were as busy serving liquor as were the graduates drinking it. Great times were enjoyed by all as we spent the night- and the morning- dancing, drinking, and enjoying the company of being with our best friends. Finally, the Coral Gables Police had to end it at 4 AM. Inside, people stayed and satisfied their "munchies." But the night was not over yet. Knowing that this happens only once, we then proceeded to Key where we spent the time reminiscing. There, on our cars, we enlightened our minds with the memory of our stay at Belen, our relajos, and even those moments of seriousness with all the wonderous memories packed away, we reflected on our future, and look forward to the plans that will unfold.
Jose Garrig6
As if graduation festivities weren't enough, someone in history came up with the idea qf a promenade. Well, as the years rolled by, it became stylish to have a "prom." But never did they imagine Belen's 1978 Grand Jubilation! The day started for most of us at about four in the afternoon since we
all had gone to sleep at about seven that very morning. But then, that's another story. Anyway, corsages had to be ordered; ask dad for the car; then came the white glove treatment; and final arrangements were clarified. We then proceeded to the various houses where a "few" drinks would help us get underway. One person had a "screwdriver," another a "Heineken," another wanted a "J & B", and what we all got was bombed. So in our idle state we cruised over to the Omni International Florida Ballroom where "Southern Trust" was ready to set the night on fire. Instantly, the sounds of rock vibrated our ears, so that after a few short bites of our meal we were dancing on the floor. And still more came, walking in circles to the dance floor to join in the celebration held in our honor. There was Disco Joe Perez showing us some hustle steps and Joshe "Sledge" Garriga doing his funky split. Everyone fell into two categories: those that danced and those that passed out. But when ''Southern Trust" played Lynard Skynard and Led Zepellin everyone fell into one category- partying. That's about the best word to sum up the night until one in the morning. The best thing was just that, the night was not over yet. A few short minutes away, in a remote island paradise- better known as Key Biscaynepreparations were underway for a lavish continuation. Through the courtesy and hard work of the De Ia Fuente family, the Senior Class of 1978 was greeted with a sumputous party and breakfast at the beautiful Sonesta HoteL After experimenting with tropical drinks in the bar, we all once again engaged in dancing, or a pleasant stroll down the beach to who-knowswhere. While some were busy at the "submarine races" others served ourselves the morning smorgasbord from a wide selection of eggs, bacon, sausage, danish pastries and more. It was incredible how long the merriment lasted. Still there were those who wouldn't be denied the grandeur of seeing the sunrise. So the couples gathered on the white shore of the beach, and either sat high upon a chair or down in the sands. The sun's beautiful presence then made most people agree to pick up their shoes and take home their memory. We are still able to reminisce of something special that will always remain in our minds. And in our hearts we are able to say, "Oh how I've Loved these Days."
Jose R. Garrig6
Life is a series of "hellos" and "good byes," and the time has come to say goodbye to Belen. It seems strange that just four years ago I walked into the halls of a buildingcold and hard as are the materials with which it was built. Yet I leave not a series of icy walls now, but a kind, warm friend which has seen me grow intellectually, physically, and most importantly, emotionally. This friend I can thank, and though ·these same walls may someday perish, I have come to see that it matters not the physical size of the edifice nor the modernness of the facilities, but rather, those persons who comprise what is collectively known as a school. Belen represents that unity which will always be a strong guiding force of my life.
So now I walk into a new world - but I can pause and look back to these days at Belen, and surely say that I will remember and miss them.
