In the beginning there was sound and the sound was heard and translated by the sense of man into the spoken word. And that word was a bond between men that they might listen and speak to themselves and to each other. And that line which was an instrument of sound extended itself and became the set jaw. A countenance was beginning to form, a character beginning to take shape.

Communications led to understanding and the countenance moved toward the outline of a human face. The shading spoke of individual differences, of unique qualities and of growth of individuals.

The shading grew more distinct New senses began to develop.

Even odors became individualized, an essence distinctly personal, unoffensive, except to those who could not yet understand the experience. The sense of taste.

The formation of the mouth.

Two lips to smile, to frown, to remain passive. The orality of things - to suck, to kiss. to speak the word. Sight. Vision.

Two piercing eyesto see, to seek, to look into the sound of things. And still the shading grows more distinct. The lines form creases, the creases wrinkles, the two dimensions become three. The senses prpvide depth. Symmetry.

Two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, two lips. The perfect work of art -

AIThe whole Man.

Foreword

The Academic Year 1974 was another year of education in the history of our school. Every day of the calendar year was like a step forward ih the trodden path of education: A road which you, your parents and your teachers traveled along.

Wheri you will turn each page of this yearbook and look at its pictures, they will remind you of every step taken along this way.

Belen rejoices - this was our goal - contemplating the progress made by all of you. We all became a little more humane, feeling closer to each other. We also became better christians, feeling nearer to God.

SEN I ORS

Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. I drink at it; but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is. Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains.

Every part of nature teaches that the passing away of one life is the making room for another. The oak dies down to the ground, leaving within its rind a rich virgin mould, which will impart a vigorous life to an infant forest.

Belen enjoyed another winning season under the guidance of Coach Bill Woods.

Short-handed Belen triumphs, anyway

By the time the basketball g am e with Westminster Christian High was over, Belen coach Bill Woods didn't know who was supposed to play where. He only knew his team had defeated Westminster in overtime, 8382 - with only four players on the court.

At halftime Saturday night, host Belen held a 10point lead. However, the last of four players to do so fouled out with two minutes remaining in the game. The problem was, Woods had only brought eight players

"Two of my players were sick and the third couldn't make it to the game," said Woods yesterday. ••so, when we only had four men left because of the ones that fouled out, we just set up a box zone and played.,.

Westminster, behind Dan Smading's 30 points, tied the score 78-78 in regulation play and the game went into overtime. Belen only had one starter on the court, Ferining Gonzalez, who hit a free throw with four seconds left for the victory.

"We used three guards and one forward," said Woods. "I moved Gonzalez, who was a guard, to forward and Javier Gonzalez, who is a reserve forward, to guard, and Tony C r u d e 1 e and Charley Vasquez, who " Anyway, Belen won.

If eyes were made for seeing, Then Beauty is its own excuse for being.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Graduating Class of 1974

With common goals and common longings, we laughed, we loved, we played, we won. Those were our school days, our happy days. They were real because we made them real. They were alive because we existed.

In years to come, as I look back, how will I remember? Will Iremember the year as it was or as I had wished it to be? Will I remember only the happy time or the disappointments we also shared?

This year-s Junior Senior prom was held in the luxurious East Mediterranean Room of the plush Dora/ Beach Hotel. The formal evening began at 8:00 and concluded at midnight ...

... students and faculty members danced the night away to the now sounds of ''The Heroes Of Cranberry ..

... the night was one of great joy for graduating senzors and one of anticipation for all juniors.
