JESUIT PREPARATORY SCHOOL YEAR 1971-1972

Rev. Daniel G. Balder, S. J. , Rector. Latin American History 12, Theology

The c 1 ass of '72 chose the poem "A Key ofT hough t" as their theme poem.

We find Father Balder among those ·· persons for whom thinking molds a key. Being himself a graduate of Belen, Father Balder has dedicated his life to an ideal, the Church and Belen. This.year marked his last as Rector of our school He has now a new assignment ahead of him.

Father Balder, to show you our deep appreciation for your interest and your dedication for Belen we dedicate this yearbook to you.

BEFORE LEAVING. A contribution to the 1972 Yearbook.

In the fifteenth century better ships were built and more satisfactory methods of reckoning distance, location and direction were devised. These problems were solved partly by the use of the compass and the astrolabe and by improvements in ship construction. The compass gives us the magnetic meridian; it points out the magnetic pole to the North. The astrolabe gives the altitude of the sun and the stars, it helps us to locate the real position of the ship in a rough sea. The time was ripe to overseas

The trend of life which you are going to find is as a risky voyage, a mission full of adventures. Trust yourselves; you are well oriented, and you know where you are going. On the other hand you are entrusted with a firm, steel-like, free will, and a strong motivation, but you also have the security of God's help.

What do we mean by saying that you are well oriented? Simply that you know how to select a successful career. That you know how to find your deepest interests and your dearest inclinations. But you need something else. You need to be concerned with the ultimate goals of where you are aiming and what the ultimate reason of this world is for you. A nearsighted person can read and write, but he is unable to see at a distance. He does not distinguish one person from another because the distant object is a sort of fog and mist for him. Belen students should not be shortsighted people.

During your stay at Belen, your eye-power has been increased. You are perfectly aware of the real reasons and the important meanings of your life. You are aiming toward God through your life's happenings •

Be assured, however, that your "ship" is firm and secure. You have solved many personalquestions you put to yourself at Belen. You have studied and you have received advice, but you, yourselves, have maae up your mind. Through long years of deeper · and deeper insight', you have discovered that God, who is inviting you to Him, is the same God who helps you in reaching your goals.

I am not omitting your parents' guidance. I take if for granted. But, I would like for you to remember your Counselors, your Teachers and the whole atmosphere of Belen. I would change the metaphor and say, "Take off! Be safe! Your plane is the latest model and, in addition, you have a radar!".

Truly, the risks of the trip are greater than ever, but this real fact can be additional incentive for courageous people. I envy you!

Belen Wins First Ever, Patriots Fall

"

·We waited a long time for this moment," Belen Coach Jim Rehn said after Belen won its first game ever by upsetting powerful Florida Christian, 8-6, Friday night at Corql Gables Youth Center.

Yardstick

Jorge Casbrea swept left end for 18 yards and a TD to give Belen (1-4)' the lead with only 1:20 left in the first half. On the same play, Cabrera ran for the two-point conversion which turned out to be the deciding points in the game.

· But Florida Christian (3-2) would not be held scoreless and Rq.y Painter scored from the tw'o to cap a 36-yard drive set up on a blocked punt by Bruce Harvey. Painter also tried to run the twopoint conversion but was leveled short of the goal by safety Ricky Minagorri.

FLORIDA Christian threatened time after . time but was stopped by Penalties (135 yards) and a scrapping Belen defense which halted the Patriots inside their 20 three times.

When asked about his touchdown run, Cabrera commented, "I had fantastic blocking by the whole team. The whole team played just great."

The Ramon Guiteras Memorial Library

In 1941, Miss Gertrude E. Guiteras' will, provided the establishment of a free library in Matanzas, Cuba, as a memorial to her father, Ramon Guiteras, who was born in Matanzas in 1811 and died in exile in Bristol, R.I., in 1873. Miss Guiteras always lived and died in Bristol. The first Guiteras Memoria! Library was built in Matanzas and inaugurated in 1955. It was seized by the Cuban Regime in 1961. The Supreme Court of Rhode Island, decided last November "To apply the income from the Gertrude E. Guiteras Fund to the operation of a library to be known as The Ramon Guiteras Memorial library, at Belen Jesuit Prenaratorv School, Miami, Fla."

The Ramon Guiteras Memorial Library in Miami, Fla., was officially inaugurated on June 3, 1972, at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School for the use of the students and public of the city of Miami. Miss Sue Black is the Librarian of this new Guiteras Memorial Library.

Mrs. Jack Guiteras cutting the ribbon at the new entra{lce to the Library. Mr. Jack Guiteras standing by her and their children.

The Library is now open to the students of the school and the public of Miami.

NEW JESUIT PRIESTS

Ten Cuban Jesuits reach their lifetime goal: PRIESTHOOD.

Willy Arias, Eduardo Barrios, Emilio Brito, Jose'Cruz, Carlos Diharce, Alberto Garc!a, Pedro Gonza1.ez, Manuel Maza, Roberto Mollinedo, Pedro Suarez.

Six of them were graduated in Belen, and five of them were teachers in our School.

Six of them were ordained in Gesu Church, Miami, Fla: Barrios, Cruz Garc!a, Maza, Mollinedo and Suarez, the 24th of June.

Arias and Brito were ordained the same day in San Juan, P.R.

Diharce in Loyola, Spain.

Pedro Gonzalez Llorente in Caracas, Venezuela.

On the 20th of May, another Belen graduate, Orlando Espin was ordained in Miami for the Archdiocese. He is working at St. Brendan Catholic Church.

"It was not you who choose me, it was I who choose you to go forth and bear fruit."

(John, 15, 16)

Christ calls new disciples to carry on his mission in the twentieth century.

He chooses them to proclaim the good news of God to men.

They feel happy about Christ's choice, for their mission is to meet men most basic needs. They will enlighten human hearts with the word of God, and they will communicate to their fellowmen the eternal life of the children of God.

Rev. Barrios, Cruz, Garc!a, Maza, Mollinedo and Suarez wait in the front pew of Gesu Church, among their parents, relatives, and friends to be called to the sanctuary to receive the Holy Sacrament of the Priesthood of Christ.

"Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal patiently with erring sinners, for he, himself is beset by weakness and so must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. One does not take this honor on his own initiative, but only when called by God, as Aaron was."

( Heb . 5 , 1-4)

The six new Priests to be ordained laid prostrate in the Sanctuary of Gesu Church praying with Ordaining Bishop, Roque Adames of Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, the Jesuit Provincial Rev. Benito Blanco, and the Rector of Belen, Fr. Daniel Bald or.

The imposition of the hands is the matter of the Sacrament of Order. This is done by the Ordaining Bishop and his fellow Priests attending the ceremony. Mons. Bryan o. Walsh, Episcopal Vicar for the Spanish Apostolate in Miami, appears in the first place. More than twenty Priests imposed their hands on the heads of the newly ordained Priests.

His Excellency, Bishop Roque Adames of Santiago de los Caballeros, recites the form of the Sacrament.

"I do not pray for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their word. "

(John, 17, 20).
