Father
José Maria Izquierdo, S.J., a respected teacher, administrator, and priest at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami died on May 21, 1997. He dedicated nearly three decades of his life to Belen in Miami and El Colegio de Belén in Cuba.
Fr. Izquierdo is remembered by Belen Alumni as being one who enforced discipline with care and love; he was always there for his students. In May 1982, he received the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa, for his unstinted contribution to formation of so many graduates of Belen who were distinguished students at the University of Georgetown and other universities.
This inspired the formation of the annual golf tournament, which honors Fr. Izquierdo and benefits the Belen Financial Assistance Program.
