Commencement Speaker

Sir Andreas Widmer is the Director of the Arthur & Carlyse Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship and Associate Professor of Practice at The Catholic University of America’s (CUA) Busch School of Business.

In addition to his role at CUA, Sir Widmer was knighted by Pope Francis in 2024. He co-founded The SEVEN Fund, a philanthropic organization that promotes enterprise solutions to poverty. His extensive experience as a business executive spans high-tech, international business strategy, consulting, and economic development. He has held leadership roles at the OTF Group, Eprise Corporation, Dragon Systems, and FTP Software. His work has taken him across the globe, from the United States to Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, leading teams to bring over 100 leading-edge technology products to market.

Sir Widmer is an accomplished author. He has explored the intersection of leadership, entrepreneurship, and spirituality. His book, The Pope & The CEO: Pope Saint John Paul II’s Lessons to a Young Swiss Guard, draws from his experiences serving as a Swiss Guard for Pope John Paul II and his subsequent career in business.

A former Pontifical Swiss Guard, Sir Widmer holds two business degrees from Switzerland, a B.S. in International Business from Merrimack College, and an M.A. from St. John’s Seminary in Boston. A dual citizen of Switzerland and the United States, he is fluent in English, German, Italian, and French.

Class of 2025 Brigadier

Daniel Enrique Vilella was selected by his peers, faculty and staff as the Brigadier for the class of 2025. Since beginning at Belen Jesuit in 6th grade, Daniel has embodied the values of a Belen education and has been involved in sports, academic teams, and clubs. His favorite school memory is serving alongside his Belen brothers on the Belen Youth Mission in the summer of 2024 in the Dominican Republic. Daniel will pursue a degree in architecture at the University of Miami.

“I am truly humbled to receive this incredible honor,” said Daniel. “ With such an amazing class of fellow brothers, so many of these young men are also deserving of being named Brigadier. However, I am incredibly grateful for being chosen and I want to thank all my classmates, faculty members, and family for contributing to my growth as a Man for Others. I hope that I can fully represent my class and the impact we have left on Belen forever.”

“As old as Belen itself, the Brigadier is the student who personifies best the values of a Belen education,” said Fr. Guillermo M. García-Tuñón, S.J. ‘87. “The French word, whose origin dates back to the early 17th century, refers to the title given to a leader of a brigade who leads his men into battle. For Belen, the Brigadier refers to a student leader who, through his example, as he stands at the end of his Belen career and prepares for the next chapter, leads his classmates into the rest of their lives. Danny is a wonderful example of those ideals and will be a wonderful example to his classmates by continuing to lead the life of a Catholic man.”

The Brigadier fulfills the characteristics of Jesuit education in an exemplary fashion. He is religious, open to growth, intellectually curious, loving, and committed to doing justice, as identified in our school’s mission statement.

GerardManly Hopkins (1844-1889) was an English poet, Roman Catholic convert, and Jesuit priest, whose posthumous 20th-century fame established him among the leading Victorian poets. His experimental explorations in prosody (especially sprung rhythm) and his use of imagery established him as a daring innovator in a period of largely traditional verse. Hopkins studied the classics at Oxford from 1863 to 1867. He entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus at Manresa House, Roehampton, in 1868 and studied philosophy at St. Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst in 1870. Hopkins was a founding member of the Oxford University Newman Society in 1878 for Catholic students.

AndreaPozzo (1642-1709), born in Trento, Italy, was a Jesuit Brother, Baroque painter, architect, decorator, stage designer, and art theoretician. He was best known for his grandiose frescoes using an illusionistic technique called quadratura, in which architecture and fancy are intermixed. His masterpiece is the nave ceiling of the Church of Sant’Ignazio in Rome, which set the standard for the decoration of Late Baroque ceiling frescos throughout Catholic Europe.

Christopher Clavius (1538-1612) was a German Jesuit mathematician and astronomer who was the principal architect of the modern Gregorian calendar. In his last years, he was the most respected astronomer in Europe, and his textbooks were used for astronomical education for over fifty years in Europe and even in more remote lands. Clavius joined the Jesuit order in 1555. Within the Jesuit order, Clavius was almost single-handedly responsible for adopting a rigorous mathematics curriculum in an age where philosophers and theologians often ridiculed mathematics. In logic, Clavius’ Law is named after him.

FrancisXavier (1506-1552) was a pioneering Roman Catholic missionary born in the Kingdom of Navarre (Spain). He, along with St. Ignatius of Loyola, was one of the first seven Jesuits who dedicated himself to the service of God in a small chapel at Montmartre on August 15, 1534. He led an extensive mission into Asia, mainly in the Asian Portuguese Empire. He was influential in the spreading and upkeep of Catholicism, most notably in India and Japan. Xavier met Ignatius of Loyola while both were students at the University of Paris.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. (1881-1955), born in Orcines, was a French philosopher and Jesuit priest. When he was 12, he attended the Jesuit college of Mongré, in Villefranche-surSaône, where he completed a baccalaureate in philosophy and mathematics. In 1899, he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Aix-en-Provence. He was trained as a paleontologist and geologist and took part in the discovery of Peking Man. Teilhard conceived the idea of the Omega Point and developed Vladimir Vernadsky’s concept of Noosphere. Teilhard’s The Phenomenon of Man is a sweeping account of the cosmos unfolding.

John Carroll (1735-1815) was born of Irish ancestry in the British colony of Maryland. He entered the Society of Jesus at 18 and was ordained in 1769. Fr. Carroll, S.J., was appointed the first bishop and archbishop in the United States. Bishop Carroll founded Georgetown University and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Bishop Carroll’s brother Daniel signed the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. His cousin Charles Carroll was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence and the first U.S. Senator from Maryland. John Carroll, along with Benjamin Franklin, was sent to Canada to convince the Canadians to remain neutral in the American Revolutionary War.

Athanasius Kircher (1602–1680) was a German Renaissance scholar and polymath who published around forty significant works, most notably in comparative religion, geology and medicine. He was one of the first to observe microbes through a microscope and theorized that infectious microorganisms spread the bubonic plague. While not busy descending into volcanoes, surviving shipwrecks, and beating the plague, Kircher invented clocks, robots and the first megaphone. He has been honored with the title “Master of a Hundred Arts.”

St. Robert Bellarmine, S.J. (1542-1621) was born in Rome, Italy. He studied at the Universities of Padua and Leuven, where he was the first Jesuit to teach. As bishop, Bellarmine put into effect the reforming decrees of the Council of Trent and was considered a possible candidate for the papacy in the conclave of 1605. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation movement. He is also widely remembered for his role in the Giordano Bruno affair, the Galileo affair, and the trial of Friar Fulgenzio Manfredi. He was canonized and declared a Doctor of the Church on June 21, 1930, and his feast day is celebrated on September 17 and May 13.

José Rubiños (1898-1963) was born in La Coruña, Spain, in 1898. He was a prominent professor at Belen School in Cuba, where he taught for over three decades. Among his most outstanding publications is Covadonga, the only epic written in Spanish and Galician and for which he received a gold medal at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. At the time of his death, the Spanish press published: “The Spanish language has lost one of its most brilliant luminaries.” During his exile in Panama, he composed Las 100 Mejores Poesías Panameñas. He devoted his last years to teaching at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, where he continued his vocation with discipline and love.

Academic Regalia

The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. In England, in the second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown.

While European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications of academic dress, American colleges and universities generally have adopted the Intercollegiate Code for Academic Costumes. This code specifies design characteristics of gowns, hoods, caps and tassels, including pattern, material, color, trimmings, etc.

For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctors’ gowns, edging of hoods, and tassels of caps, the colors associated with the different subjects are as follows:

Salve Regina

O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria.
