SYNCHRONICITY among Human Beings can be a dream, a reality, a step in our psychological development, a family affair, an enriching goal, a positive outcome of a Senior Class, a pleasant feeling, a varied expression of common effort, an unavoidable condition for a professional work, an evident reflection of our social growth, an indispensible factor for community life .. .
Whatever would be our personal experience of different kinds of SYNCHRONICITY in our daily life . .. something remains BASIC for a steady SYNCHRONICITY among persons: ALTRUISM. Planning together, organizing together, timing together, achieving together, feeling good for this series of common accomplishments all these DEMAND a lot of CONCERN for OTHERS, a mature habit of unselfishness, a strong DECISION to HELP and YIELD in what is necessary to do something TOGETHER
The ME-NOW-ATTITUDE does not have much to do with SYNCHRONICITY. Or it does: That is the most efficient way to destroy SYNCHRONICITY in its very roots.
In a word, the BASIC COMPONENTS of SYNCHRONICITY are CONCERN for OTHERS and RESPONSIBILITY. Hence, SYNCHRONICITY requires a strong training in LIVING and WORKING with OTHERS and for OTHERS
As it often happens, one word leads a person to think about many moments in life. This year the term "synchronicity" will inevitably make me think about a song which has a catchy phrase (proper perhaps to 1984?), " I'll be watching you " This in turn, makes me think of a very beautiful person I know, who in turn often leads me to think about God. It does not end there. In Belen jesuit School, we constantly repeat the phrase of Fr. Arrupe, "Men for others." This phrase rests on the clear understanding that we not only have a responsibility towards our fellow-men, but that we must seek to discover God in those who surround us.
So in a rather unique manner, this term "synchronicity," this album, the song, leads me to realize the presence of God in my life, the person of Christ in another human being. It leads me to strive towards the realization that Christ is here, in our midst, and that what we do or fail to do, ultimately makes me a participant or a nonparticipant in that continuous process of redemption that started with His crucifixion and resurrection.
Belen calls itself a Christian community, let us strive together, parents, students, faculty, staff, administration, to make real that brotherhood with "every word we say," with "every step we take," keeping in mind always that in a loving way He tells us, "I'll be watching you "
The year of 1984 marked an emotional and climactic moment for the entire Belen Community. The school not only survived for many years, but also prevailed despite many set-backs mainly because of a well defined reason for being. There is only one Belen. A school pursuing excellence, producing men of education, spirituality, enlightenment and wisdom.
These are the most important goals the administration, teachers and students are trying to achieve.

Carl lung's concept of Synchronicity opens an additional dimension of consciousness with respect to the nature of human experience. So does the study of literature Literature helps mankind to gain a richer perspective in as Huxley put it , "the incomprehensible sequence of changes and chances that make up life." A good English class involves both interpretation and communication. Language arts involve composition, grammar, spelling, and good oral communication It fosters both oral and written discussion of the very values inherent in the literature A good English class puts it all together - Synchronicity

LEHTOur world, our society, is not stable. The world with its economy, culture and politics changes constantly In this century many values, philsophies and institutions have lost their continuity and reliability
Then, we ask ourselves, what remains unchangeable? What can bring unity to these unstable elements? Who would synchronize and bring harmony to our lives? St. Paul said, "Christ yesterday, today and for ever." The graduating class of 1984 searches for synchronicity in all of life's goals (academic, athletic, achievements and spiritual life). In following Christ we will achieve the integration of these values . St. Paul had one goal in life: to be like Christ. "The life I live now is not my own, Christ is living with me." (Galatians 2 ) Make Him your goal too.

No institution can hope to accomplish the fullest extent of its capabilities unless every one of its constitutive elements work together for this common goal. In a school like Belen this is extremely important because not only academi<: excellence and athletic distinction are aimed at; we must emphasize, in addition, our commitment to develop an awareness of others' needs and the giving of our time and effort to help others. We have seen our students coming together this year to achieve these goals. In the Department of Modern Language the examples are numerous. Their hard work and dedication, throughout every day of the academic year, made possible great accomplishments and us teachers feel proud of their outstanding contribution to our school. We at the Department of Modern Language want to congratulate all of them for their effort, dedication and commitment in achieving this common goal of excellence in unity

I certainly feel that synchronicity is a most appropriate word to describe this year's senior class. Like a diamond, this year's class is multi-faceted - and like a diamond all of these facets cooperate to exude an indescribable brilliance. This brilliance is composed of such facets as sincerity, honesty, integrity, warmth, determination, consistency - the list is really endless . Take with you all of the values that you have obviously acquired and do your part to contribute to a world synchronicity. And remember always : "Give to the world the best you have and the best will come back to you."

The Ramon Guiters Memorial Library was founded in 1941 when Miss Gertrude E. Guiteras provided in her will, the funds to establish a free library, open to the public. The library was inaugurated in 1955 in the city of Matanzas. After the communist takeover of Cuba, the library was closed. Then in June, 1972 it was reopened at Belen jesuit School in Miami.
Since then it has served the students of Belen as well as the public. The library has facilities consisting of audiovisual materials in languages, arts and sciences, a periodicals department, and a Library Bulletin of Acquisitions published bimonthly. The library also contains a very interesting, but small, collection, of rare books.
The library has proved to be very beneficial. Also, it has grown extensively in the past three years. At its present location in the new Belen Building, the library's facilities have expanded and will continue to do so, to better serve the community
Synchronicity, as a manifestation of Jung' s process of individualization demands from each person a keen awareness of life It is a process that calls the person to understanding. Recognition of our motivational forces, both good and evil is the first step to creating a healthy self-acceptance. Acceptance of ourselves as we truly are is self love, not egotism. It is this self-love that nurtures communal love . Our goal as counselors is to assist in the awareness of these motivational factors, and provide by instruction and example, techniques of integration. A self-actualized person perceives the world and his life as an unceasing process, whereby, events become the stepping stones of further achievement, healthy relationships and a true spirituality.
Brian Wentzel Head of the Guidance Dept.
Synchronicity can only be achieved through proper leadership, everyone working together as a team towards one common goal. To achieve a common goal certain things must first be taken into consideration. The most important ingredient is good leadership Good leadership must be presented at all levels, we must have good leaders in our administration, in our faculty, and most importantly, the student body. What makes a good or a bad leader? A good leader will prepare you for the future; while a bad leader will only be concerned with present. A good leader will think before he acts, while a bad leader will only act on instinct.
To the Belen Seniors, during these last few years, you have developed the basic knowledge that will help you prepare for life . You know what is right and what is wrong, what is moral and what is immoral , and what is Christian and what is not. It's your decision, "we have only just begun. "

What with one thing and another
It's a tug of war
We expected more
But with one .thing and another
We were trying to outscore each other
In a tug of war
1) ERIC WINS STATE!!
1.
2 Another strong finish. 3 It ' s always lonely at the top! 4 Keep pushing on!
5 A strong sprint gives Belen another victory.
6. Another meet, another victory.
As we look back to the season of Belen ' s most successful sport in the past, we find no surprises, no let downs, but rather just what we expected , another successful season. As usual , Coach Carlos Barquin was again able to field a team of strong runners , full of determination and desire, not to mention talent.
This is due partly to the exploits of Junior Eric Alvarez. Eric had another excellent season, but this one surpassed any he ever had before Among his accomplishments this year , Eric won both the District and Conference meets and was ranked #1 in Dade County for all AAA, AA , and A divisions as he made the All-Dade team But the highlight of the year was at the State meet where Eric finished first, and became the only Belen runner ever to do so Because of this , Eric , along with Senior Emiliano Herran who placed fifth in the meet, made the All-State team. For the second time in Belen's history, two runners made the All-State team . All in all, Eric finished as the #2 runner in all of Dade County behind AAAA Killian's John Henry.
A final record was set this year as Eric was joined on the All-Dade team by Seniors Emiliano Herran and Juan Carlos Alvarez. This is another first in Belen his.tory . Never before have three runners made the All-Dade team.
As a team, Belen had many highlights. Behind the running of Seniors J.C Alvarez, Emiliano Herran, Joaquin Riera , and Teddy Sanchez , along with Juniors Eric Alvarez , Luis Planas , and Sophomore Richard Torra , Belen compiled a 12 and 1 record. Throughout the year, Belen defeated every team in Dade County, including highly ranked AAAA teams like Killian and Hialeah Miami-Lakes. Belen also won the District and Conference Championships and finished the year as one of the top three teams in the whole county.
Although the team is losing four Seniors this year , our future looks very bright. With the return of Eric, Luis, and Richard / along with some hopefuls from the Junior High team Belen Cross-Country will again rise to the top and success will again be ours
The Junior High team finished the year with a record of 23-6 Coached by Mr. Humberto Adan , this fine team complimented its record with two championship trophies. The first was received for a first place finish in the Gulfstream Athletic Conference Championships on October 27, 1983 The second trophy was received on November 17, 1983 at the Dade County All-Catholic Eighth Grade Division Championship. The team was very proud of both of these accomplishments.
The team was led by the strong running of Fernando Calvo, the top runner in the county, Wilfreda Baceras, and Robert Gonzalez. Along with the rest of the team , made up of Otoniel Boudet, Alex Garcia, Robert Suarez, Craig Symmons , and Francisco Braceras, these young runners did a fine job, a job the whole school can be proud of.
3 . Sague makes him pay for this catch .
"Just call me Gero"
5 "Ok guys, this is what we gotta' do " 6 Milton celebrates his only touchdown.
7 "Now introducing #82, Cespedes or Menendez or whoever!!
8 Sorry Para, too late
9 "Coach, there's nobody to pitch to "
The 1983 football season was one filled with many dreams and expectations. It was filled with team unity, friendship, and personal growth However , it was also filled with disappointment because of a streak of close losses, such as the Coral Shores game (14-13) , which utterly destroyed our moral support as well as our shot for the district championships .
The team probably would have done better if it had not been for its one major setback. Most of our experienced players were subject to injury and had to end their season short. Among these were jorge Rodriguez, Ed Hillman , and joe Rodriguez. So , it was left up to the less experienced players, such as Alex Adams, Oscar Benitez, and Eddie Cora, to lead the team to victory. And they did . The Wolverines went on to win three consecutive games: Ransom , Pace, and Dade Christian . But, our inexperience caught up with us and we lost the remaining games of the season to the more experienced teams of Westminister and Pine Crest.
Yet there were some highlights to the season joaquin Novoa, the team's quarterback , threw for 1000 + Jorge Del Valle, fullback, ran for over 600 yards. Our leading receiver was Rolando Mendoza And on the defensive side , Jorge Guisasola led the team in tackles , while Carlos Vega, who intercepted 7 passes, was voted all conference, county, and state player. All in all, it turned out to be a pretty good year for some of the players
Now, as the " Year of the Seniors " comes to a close, the team will lose 17 out of 25 starters. But, the future years do look good as our Junior Varsity, which went 6-1 under head coach George Gonzalez , moves up . A new breed of very promising players , such as Eddy Perez and John Sague, make our future in football look bright. To next year's team and the future teams we say, "Good Luck! " We would also like to express our thanks and appreciation to Coach Richard Stewart, and finally a fond farewell to our seniors

Despite the fact that the Wolverines ended the 1984 Basketball season suffering a heartbreaking loss to Coral Shores, 54-52, in the final game of the District 16AA Championship, the season as a whole was nothing short of spectacular.
The Wolverines had a well balanced attack led by the play of Tearn Captains Thomas Gonzalez-Diego and jorge Lopez-Garcia. The strength underneath was provided by Senior Alex Rodriguez, Sophomore Arnie Paniagua, and first year player Orlando Roche. When the team needed outside shooting they would turn to jose Roca and Emilio Marrero. The defense and the quickness was provided by jorge Perez, Robert Torricella and Flory Puente. Other members of the team were Eddy Rodriguez, Luis Valladares, Ralph Prohias, Jose Mola and jorge Barquin.
The team was off to a good start when for the first time, Belen won the Westminster Early Bird Tournament and was off to a 5-0 start. After the Christmas Break, the team won 11 of its next 13 games, including an impressive victory over Gulliver, when Thomas Gonzalez-Diego hit two free with one second left to lift Belen. Probably the biggest highlight of the season was a loss to a tough AAAA Columbus High by three points, one that will never be forgotten. For the first time ever, Belen came closest to defeating an AAAA school that was supposedly way over its league.
Some other highlights were defeating AAA Pace High three consecutive times for the first time ever. Despite the loss to Coral Shores to end the season, Belen finished with a record of 19-7, received a #1 ranking in Dade County, and for the first time in many years, Belen achieved a #8 ranking in the State of Florida.
Belen loses nine seniors to graduation, but with the play of junior Emilio Marrero and Sophomore Arnie Paniagua, next year's team has the possibility of being very strong again.
This year's J.V. Basketball Team went 13-2, with impressive victories over AAA Pace, Gulliver, and a great effort against powerhouse Columbus, coming only five points short. The team was led by Tony Franyie, Bibi Argamasilla, Rolando Torricella, Coco Rionda, Luis Diaz, Jorge Padron, jorge Mora and Willy Pujals. This season was definitely not a bad way to end Gaston "Pompy" Cantens career as a Belen coach. He finished his four-year 41-4 record at Belen to pursue a college coaching career. This year's "Baby Wolverines" went 14-1, continuing the seventh and eighth grade tradition. This year's team, coached by Carlos Barquin was led by a flock of young talent including Bernie Miyares, Miguel Fraga, Carlos Perez, Alex Rodriguez and Marco Gonzalez. Belen's future in Basketball looks very prosperous.

Despite the fact that seven starters of last year's successful team were seniors, the 83-84 soccer team was expected to keep the winning tradition alive with a young but very talented team. They were to be challenging for a top conference and district ranking. Unfortunately, the successful season never materialized as Belen ended the season with a disappointing record of 6-13 . Reasons for this unsuccessful season included: talented players quitting or never going out for the team, players on academic probation, poor turnouts at practice, and a feeling of apathy among the younger players.
Even though the season was one of despair and disappointment, there were some good moments. The first annual Belen Christmas Tournament was one of those moments. Four teams, including county-ranked Sunset (4A), were invited. In the first round, a fast, controlled, and aggressive Belen team soundly defeated a surprised Kendall Acres team, 5-1 . On the second day, Belen faced off against Sunset. Belen was not intimidated and quickly scored the first goal. Then Belen's unyielding defense took over, holding a persistent Sunset offense to only one goal, forcing an unexpected overtime period. Sunset finally prevailed over the tough 2A team.
The second highlight of the year came at the District Tournament, where Belen defeated Northwest Christian 1-0 to advance to the semi-finals There Belen played number two ranked Miami Country Day School. Belen held strong but suffered a heartbreaking defeat, 2-1 (two shots hit the crossbar in the final minutes). Thus, the season ended two goals shy of a district trophy.
This year's team was coached by newcomer, F.I.U. star Munga Eketebi, who did the best he could with the little that he had. The experienced defense was the team's greatest asset. It was led by four year veteran and All-Conference sweeper Ted Sanchez, the talented three year Spanish veteran Carlos Muniz, the aggressive sophomore Jorge Borges and the team's rotating goalkeepers Tony Abella and Colombian national Camilo Rocha. The offense and mid-field were led by freshman sensation Carlos Huerta, the never tiring veteran J. C. Alvarez, the powerful Venezuelan Jorge Dalmau, and the quick, blond wonder Fernando Carranza.
1984 has been the best year for the Belen tennis team since it was created 9 years ago. The team's record was 11 wins and 2 losses this year. The team was basically composed of the same members from the previous year: Hector Ortiz, Ralph Quintana, Jorge Dalmau, and Luis Iglesias. But two new members were added: Julio Trias and Carlos Torres de Navarra. The only two members who will not be returning next year are the seniors Ralph Quintana, and Jorge! Dalmau, but they will be hopefully replaced by new talent coming from the B-Team.
Belen came in fourth place in the Gulf Stream Athletic Conference and in third place in Districts 8-AA. Hector Ortiz, the number one player took first place in conference and was the runner up in districts . It was his most successful season at Belen.
This year Belen began the construction of its own home courts. Belen has done this with the effort of the families of the tennis players and other contributions, which has made the dream come true. Four top tennis courts are being built which will surely help Belen's tennis. It will enable players to practice together instead of individually.
The Belen Wolverine Baseball Team began its season with new coaches, high expectations, and 7 seniors to anchor a vastly experienced ball club. Despite their experience, the team got off to a very disappointing start with a 6-7-1 record. Eventually, with the help of the seniors, the Wolverines bounced up from their slow start to win 6 out of the last 7 games.
The peak of the seasQn came when Belen defeated Westminster Christian for the first time in the school's history by the score of 6-4. This victory helped propel Belen into the District playoffs. In the Playoffs, Belen beat both Dade Christian and LaSalle with the help of great batting from Juan Figeras, AI Consuegra, Ferni Garcia, and Angel Navarro. The defensive contributions were made by, among others, jose DeGoti, Jorge DelValle, and Frank Argamasilla. Pitchers Joaquin Novoa and Tony Franyie further contributed to Belen's victories with impeccable work from the mound.
The Wolverines reached the district final game, but suffered a heartbreaking, season ending loss to Westminster. After the game, coaches Ed Fraga and Ernie Rodriguez consoled the team by telling them that they had played up to their potential despite their slow start.
Next year the Baseball team will be led by returning starters Frank Argamasilla, Tany Franyie, and Emilio Roldan. They will be aided by young aspiring players such as Tom Jelke, Leroy Hernandez, Javier Mariscal, and Jose Lopez. Good luck to the 1985 Wolverines!
The 1984 Baby Wolverines enjoyed another great year, one of the team's best in fact, going undefeated in 9 games. Coach Gaston Cantens, affectionately known as Pompi, said that the key victories were over St. Brendans 8-5 and over Gulliver Academy 6-4. The team was led by 8th graders Lopez de Mendoza, Hoyo, Gordillo, Bohorques, Richard, Guitierrez, Perez, lnfiesta, Braceras, Oliver, Lanza, and Mestres. The Coach also said that he hopes 7th graders Espin, Baste, and Zabala will return next year to continue their undefeated streak. Good luck to the Baby Wolverines.

The 1983-1984 Track Team had a great season. Superbly coached by Carlos Barquin and Richard Stuart, the team compiled an 11-2 record and won the Conference Championship. This was just the start of the surprises in store for the team.
The grand finale, and highlight of the season came at the State Track Meet in Winter Park. There Eric Alvarez won his second State Title and became the first Belen athlete ever to place first in State competition. In the pole vault competition, District Champion Ricky Mayo took sixth place. Both of these fin,e athletes made the All-State Team.
Throughout the year, the team was led by the talents of other athletes as well. Among these were M.V.P. Emiliano Herran, Danny Garrido, Manny Portuondo, Carlos Vega, Robert Torricella, juan Sague, AI Gross, Lyn juarez, Luis Planas, Richard Torra, and Fernando Calvo. These helped Belen to its fine season, but without the support and contribution of the entire team, the season would not have been so successful.
The team will be losing only four seniors next year, Emiliano Herran, j. C. Alvarez, Robert Torricella, and Carlos Vega. Thus, the strength of next year's team will be experience. With the experience of next year's seniors, juniors, and sophomores, as well as the underclassmen, the team can only expect a bright future, one filled with continued success.

The name and style of the old Philosophy Club were modified this year. The Thinker, as the new club is called, is dedicated to the study of Eastern and Western culture and to the awakening of greater selfawareness. This year members debated the issues surrounding China's "one child policy," examined Eastern and Western mysticism, and studied the works of Kahlil Gibran and Herman Hesse. Future plans are to increase membership, publish a magazine, and obtain a replica of Rodin's famous statue of "The Thinker ." The club wishes to thank Mr. Ricardo lbarria for his continuous support and enthusiasm since returning to Belen in January 1984.
This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.
- William Shakespeare
I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble, or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.
This year, the French Club was very active. Led by the untiring "RG" the club had its most successful year, one in which many goals were met.
At the 1983 Christmas Assembly, the boys sang Christmas carols in French. They also offered eggnog and French pastries to those teachers that were present.
The club members also attended a French play, Le Medicin Malgre Lui. All were intrigued by its plot and they had a good time. After the play the club members were treated to lunch at a classy French Restaurant called Chez Nous. There the students got a taste of the culture they were studying.
Finally, the Club held various French pastry contests and did participate in the prestigious Belen Language Fair.
The members would like to wish a fond "au revoir" to all and extend their best wishes to the upcoming members.

This year marked the fifth anniversary of BASES. With the enormous help of all the club moderators and especially Father Tey, BASES synchronized itself to become the science club that it used to be.
The Astronomy Club finally obtained its long awaited dome, along with a new telescope The Computer Club maintained its great popularity with the Belen community, becoming BASES' most progressive club. Weather" Electronics, Life Science, and Microbiology finally got off the ground with tremendous promise for the years to come.
The last five years have had their ups and downs, but we have at last reached that needed synchronicity to be one of the best clubs of Belen now and in years coming up.

The club dedicates itself to serving the community at large and its school. 1983 will be the year Key Club gave each classroom an American Flag. In addition, donations went to the Belen Chapel. The Key Club is the most active club at Belen for it is constantly on the go with as many as 2-3 projects each month. Some of their activities this year were: the Jerry Lewis Telethon, the Easter Drive, the Thanksgiving Drive, the Christmas Toy Drive, the Multiple Sclerosis Drive, Flag Day, and Bake Sales.

The 1983-1984 Beta Club had a great year as it was very active throughout the entire school year. The club began working early as Mrs. Elena (R.G.) Rosas-Guyon, the moderator, started the early organizational work. The elections were carried out early in the year and 4 seniors and 1 junior were elected to head the club
Throughout the year, the club sponsored many projects and also received some special recognitions First, the club sent letters to the Florida Congressional Representatives in order to have the week of March 4th-the 10th named National Beta Club Week. This was very successful and all the Congressmen gave the idea full support. Second, for 13 years of devoted service, the National Organization sent the Belen Chapter a Certificate of Recognition The club was also named a Banner Club for installing and maintaining a Junior Beta Club. Third, the club ran a successful Christmas Toy Drive. The toys were donated to the Hope Rural School, a migrant mission in Indiantown, Fla Fourth, the club even served the community at the Special Olympics. There, club members served as huggers. The club also donated $100 .00 to the Felipe Arroyo Memorial Scholarship Fund, and , of course, bought each Senior a stall to wear at the graduation , and a patch for their diplomas.
So, the Beta Club had another successful year The executive board members would like to thank Mrs. R.G. without whose help and tireless dedication, none of the good things that happened to the club and all the good things the club did, would have been impossible .
A very active Spanish Club resided in Belen this year. Instead of limiting itself to in-school activities, the club set its goals on activities outside the school walls. This goal was accomplished consistently throughout the year as the clubfarticipated in various in school and out o school activities. The club members made frequent visits to Avante Theater where they were treated to small plays, 2 Spanish films and a French film They also visited The Cuban Arts Museum and the new Cultural Center in downtown Miami. The club members helped out in the "Amigos of the Americas " program and are currently planning trips to New York and Spain. The club members co-ordinated the "Noche de Teatro;" these plays eventually went to the Youth Fair The club also published Ateneo, the club ' s semesterly magazine publication. But none of this would have been possible without the help of Mrs. Beatriz Jimenez and Mr. Aurelio Baldor, to them the club extends a very special 157 thanks!
Unbelievable dances, great Homecoming, !.D.'s, and State Presidents. These were but a few of the many accomplishments realized by the 1983-1984 Student Council. The greatest of these, however, was at the State Convention held in Plantation from May 3-5. There, Belen was elected State President for the second time in the school's history. The election itself took on many phases . Vital to the victory were campaigning, speeches, artwork, and, most importantly, the workshop. Jorge Perez and Robert Torricella ran a fundraising workshop at the convention which was deemed a major part of the victory. The workshop was organized and realized through the many hours of dedicated work the two delegates put into the project. They had, however, much needed and untiring help, as well as moral support from their friends Jorge Lopez-Garcia and Thomas Gonzalez-Diego. Were it not for these four, the workshop would not have been more than a far-fetched dream. Another important step in the direction of victory was the appointment of Robert Torricella to the office of FASC Parliamentarian. This victory was a gift from the Senior Class of 1984 to the entire school.

The school year 1983-1984 was a glorious year for Vincam, the Belen newspaper , for it marked the return of creativity, hard work, and a high journalistic standard of quality to the newspaper , something it had been lacking the past couple of years Under the careful auspices of moderator Lourdes Moller-Gomez and staffed almost entirely by Juniors , Vincam has once again achieved a place of prominence.
This year saw the publication of three eight-page issues of Vincam. Each issue had its own comprehensive News , Editorials , Sports , and Entertainment departments Each department was edited , respectively, by Edelberto Farres , Luis Clemens , jorge Fernandez, and Javier Rodriguez . The entire project was policed under the watchful eye of Editor-In-Chief Juan Ros, affectionately known as "The Boss."
The staff received many compliments, mostly from the faculty, and few complaints They hope a precedent has been established for years to come , and they look forward to another successful Vincam year in ' 84- ' 84

The Campus Ministry is a department in Belen Jesuit School dedicated to stimulate spiritual and religious growth at Belen. This encouraged through retreats, days of sacrificial acts, volunteer works, and masses at Belen.
The retreats are divided into three categories: one-day reflection days, three-day retreats or senior encounters with other schools such as Pace These retreats greatly encourage spiritual growth through the interaction with other people .
Another way in which the Campus Ministry encourages this growth is to conduct a day of sacrificial acts such as Hunger Day, in which everyone was asked to abstain from eating a big lunch. The results were excellent; almost everybody participated, and a lot of money was collected for the Dominican Republic.
Another program enacted by the Campus Ministry is the Camillus House Volunteer Program, in which the students are asked to help with the distribution of food
These programs as well as the masses at Belen help students to reflect on the many things that we take advantage of, such as: clothing, food, shelter and even a loving family.

The Spanish fair at Belen was an event in which the Belen student body, participated using their skills in poetry and short story with enthusiasm The usual first and second places were won after two weeks of deliberation by the Spanish teachers of the language department , headed by Aurelio Baldor. This year the fair presented a special Felipe Arroyo award - it was won by Jorge Khuly , 12-C, for his outstanding poem " La Arena." Also winning an award was senior Gus Garcia-Montes with his short story , " EI Mundo de las Camaras fotografias, " which also won first prize at the Dade County Youth Fa[ In the end the Spanish fair was a tremendous success and is sure to be even better next year.

In February it was announced that the Close Up Foundation had recommended Belen, because of its active in the program, as the site for the first in a series of programs dealing with the theme "Campaign '84. " The C-SPAN company had decided to tape a number of shows at various high schools from all over the United States They intended to reveal what Americans at a high school level think politically about their community and country. Belen was chosen as the first site. Mr Patrick Collins had met with other teachers from schools also involved in Close Up and had prepared a program which consisted of many events such as: a debate by the fv1iami Beach Senior High Debate team, a question and answer session with a number of guest speakers, and thirdly a question and answer session with representatives from the actual presidential candidates. In the ensuing weeks, all parts of the Belen community came together to make the program possible. After the taping on March 9 , it was generally agreed that the event had been a smashing success for Belen, which was able to gain national exposure
Is it really that boring?
The 1983-84 Close-Up trip to Washington, D.C. was of many firsts. These along with the usual components of the week-long program, made the trip a very worthwhile and enriching experience.
Among the first was the fact that Belen was making the trip in November. Though the students were disappointed by the lack of snow, the Christmas decorations and the cold weather were greatly appreciated. Another first was the visit to Colonial Williamsburg and jamestown. This visit provided the students with a basis upon which a comparison between our Founding Fathers and the modern-day politicians was made possible.
Perhaps the most valuable aspect of the trip was the chance to meet students from Dallas, Fort-Worth, and Philadelphia. Though there were many cultural differences, most of the problems and worries faced by the studeflts were similar. The 14 students who participated in the program would like to extend their deepest thanks and appreciation for all their work in the program and helping them get a look at their government.

' The world better know that we're going to do whatever's necessary for the safety and protection of our freedoms '
Robert Pupo, a student at Belen jesuit Prep in Miami, asked Reagan if he would consider sending American troops into Central America.
"It would have to be very evident that it was a direct threat to the United States," Reagan said. "It would have to be something that we saw as actually a threat to our security and our safety - and then we would be defending ourselves, not someone else."
Sylvia Vilato, a student at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Miami, asked the President about the U.S. confrontation with Cuba in Grenada. Vilato, a Cuban who came to South Florida with her parents, asked : "Would you envision any further confrontation in the future, or do you feel that Fidel Castro got the message?"
"Not only he, but a number of others got the message, all right," Reagan said "We're not warlike. We want peace. We don't plan any confrontations. That will be up to them. But we know that we can't buy peace at any price.
"And when our national security is concerned, the world better know that we're going to do whatever's necessary for the safety and protection of our freedoms "
Aniette Lauredo, a student at St. Brendan High School in Miami, asked Reagan about immigration policy.
"We have legislation in the congress right now and we've had trouble getting it passed," Reagan said, adding that something must be done to control U.S. borders because a "great many illegal immigrants just come into the country and suddenly disappear into the whole population."
Diane Lipman, from North Miami Beach High School, wanted to know if Reagan would set aside more federal financial aid for students who couldn't afford college otherwise.
"We think an adequate amount is [already] set aside," Reagan said. "The government alone is providing help of some kind for 40 per cent of the students [in college]."
Reagan said he was sympathetic to the financial plight of college students because he'd paid his own way when he was that age "And one of the better jobs that I had was washing dishes in the girls' dormitory," he joked
"I really didn't like the answer he gave," Lipman said afterward. "I think it needs to be a lot higher than 40 per cent."
jorge Rodriguez, from Miami High School, wanted to know why the nation's youth wasn't represented in the federal government.
"I wouldn't say that you don't have representation in government. This, while it is not exactly connected with the government, certainly gives you access to the government," Reagan said.
This report was supplemented with material from The Washington Post Service.

For the first time ever, Spanish Awards were given in the school to recognize talent and achievement. These, however, were very special awards. Besides the usual awards for poetry, essays and posters, two special awards were instituted.
The first of these was the Father Felip.e Arroyo Award. Dedicated to the memory of a man so close to many in the school, the award is basically a literary contest. Contestants enter either poetry, short stories, or essays out of which 3 winners are named. The overall winner then receives a $50.00 prize. This year Senior Jorge Khuly took the first place honor.
The other special award was the Don Quijote Award given by the Sociedad Cultural Hispanica. The many winners of this award receive the honor of having demonstrated an achievement in any aspect of the Spanish language and literature.
Congratulations to all the winners in this year's Spanish Awards Ceremony and a special congratulations to jorge Khuly, the first winner of the Father Felipe Arroyo Award.
This year could easily be described as an outstanding one in the area of Guest Speakers. The school was fortunate in having speakers who were entertaining and at the same time quite informative. The speeches ranged from venereal diseases to fire-prevention, from the history of Cuba to alcohol and drug addiction, from Jewish High School lifestyles to several visits by District Attorney Janet Reno Guest speakers such as these are being used every day more and more in the educational system to enrich a person's knowledge of the things going on around him Thus , Belen is constantly striving to obtain the best speakers possible

Homecoming Week '83-'84 A week highlighted by fun and excitement with all its spirit radiating throughout the school. It was truly a week to remember!
It all started on Monday, November 7 1983. The seniors on this day went throughout the 7th and 8th grade classes planting the seed ot spirit throughout. On thi s same day array of very creative hats were worn by the students ranging beanies to flower pots and trees. These were accompanied by such brands of jeans such as Sergio Valente, Levi's, and Calvin Klein On the next day the seed was growing, with such activiites as the field competitions , and the volleyball game between the Seniors and Juniors This was all topped by the presentation of the movie "Victory" , transmitting the idea of unity and friendship through the whole school. The seed grew to become a very beautiful flower on the day the Seniors presented what was to become ·the climax of the whole week and possibly the greatest Senior Skit ever in the history of Belen After this event, the rest of the activities just fell into place as the flower got more and more beautiful with such events as Spirit Day with the football Pep Rally , the Homecoming game, the Alumni Field Day , and of course the Homecoming dance.
Homecoming Week '83 -' 84 is truly worthy of the statement " WHAT A WEEK! "

The 1984 Tombola was exciting event, as well a great success. This success was due to the conscientious efforts put forth by the entire Belen community, which combined all its resources to make the 1984 Tombola a truly extravagant event.
These efforts began in late January, when the student body began its campaign of raffle ticket sales which netted well over $50,000 The students were aided in their endeavor by the cooperation and support of both parents and faculty. All these efforts culminated on the weekend of March 2, 3, and 4.
Tombola '84 ... Rides, food, games, and dances all contributed to the jubilant atmosphere prevalent throughout these days.
The entire event had come together to make one of the most memorable weekends in Belen's history. Synchronicity!

The Sophomore Prom was, as all Belen activities, not only a time to have fun and enjoy oneself, but also a time to reflect on all the accomplishments and tasks that the school undertakes on the behalf of the students. By working together, both the school and the Student Council were able to come up with a prom that the sophomores could enjoy. As such, it would only be befitting that we take the time now to thank the school for working with us in providing us with this occasion that the sophomores will remember for the rest of their lives.
1984 brings Belen yet another first, the 1984 Wolverine Summer Camp. Masterminded, coordinated, and directed by Mr Carlos Barquin, the camp is open to all boys and girls from the ages of 6-14. Included are two four week sessions of swimming, basketball, dancing, ping-pong, and, of course, field trips, to name a few.
The camp has been run very efficiently in this its first year of existence This is definitely a sign of experience, devotion, and caring For this, the Echoes Staff applauds Mr. Barquin. However, others have also played a major role in the success of the camp. These are, of course, the junior and Senior Counselors, which have come together to insure that the camp's kids are well cared for and that the whole operation is a smooth process They have been successful on both counts. This fine group of counselors is made up mostly of Belen students and Alumni The other counselors come from schools all around Miami The counselors are : Eric Alvarez, ) C. Alvarez, Jorge Barinaga, jorge Barquin, Elena Blanco, Gus Busse, Miriam Campbell, Conchita Cepero, Anna Fernandez-Rocha, Annie Figueras, joe Garcia, jorge Gonzalez, Lisa Gonzalez, Ricky Hernandez, Emiliano Herran , Susy Macia, Maria Perez, Sylvia Perez, Luis Planas , Luly Planas, Ernie Portuondo, Aleida Tunon, Augusto Venegas, and Gian Zumpano
All in all the kids seem to get a real kick from the camp. It gives them a place to meet new friends and do things they couldn't do otherwise. It insures that the kids can have a place to run around and do whatever they want while being supervised
Again the Echoes Staff would like to extend its congratulations to Mr. Barquin for a very successful Summer Camp '84. It is refreshing to find a person who cares, he should know that his efforts are not unrecognized or unappreciated

Never give children a chance of imagining that anything exists in isolation Make it plain from the very first that all living is relationship Show them relationships in the woods, in the fields , in the ponds , and the streams , in the village and the country around it. Dear Papi,
How proud I am of my son!
He will be graduating from high school this year. And he is graduating from the same school you graduated from in Havana
It seems just yesterday that your first grandson was born on that memorable 4th of July, 1966 and pitiful to remember the little time God gave you to see him grow. What an irony your last day with us was the same day of your second grandson's second birthday, the 26th of February, 1970. You can't imagine how much I' ve missed you and needed you.
On balance, his years at Belen have been very good plus a great learning experience for him in every respect . He has experienced the joy of success and taken it with humble pride. He has also suffered the agony of defeat (some, the result of his own mistakes and some, resulting from those envious or irrational things imposed by men) and he has accepted it with dignity, respect and honor but always with faith in his ideas and strong in his convictions even when others said they were wrong or refused to listen and reason.
He has learned to make up his own mind and to reach his own decisions But , to do this , he has also learned to filter what he hears on a screen of truth and take ' just the good that passes through He asks for and listens to our advice but we never try to make the decisions for him
Now he'll slowly and progressively stop being an adolescent to become a man. My son will begin college I just can't believe it. And to think you are not around to feel the same joy and pride I feel!
But now things are going to start changing He is entering into a life cycle when things start getting more difficult and where life's realities and the envious world in which we live start taking their toll. Where will they take him? How much tragedy and sorrow may he have to face? It will take a lot of faith , understanding , love and much courage to live in today's world. Now more than ever , I ask for your help , Papi.
Help me to steer him in the right direction and I also wish you sort of look after him . Let's treat him gently but not coddle too much because only the test of fire makes fine steel. Let him have the courage to go out to set his goals and objectives but let's teach him that patience, prudence and perseverance play an important role in reaching them
He will have to learn more about mankind That all men are not just and true But that. for every bad man there is a good one. That for every enemy there is a friend. Let's teach him to scoff the cynics and to beware of too much sweetness or big promises. But, let's also teach him to continue to extend his helping hand when others need it and that his leadership ability be put to use for the benefit of the world , his country, his community. All of this accomplished with goodwill in his heart , a smile on his face and with integrity and compassion . This is quite a task , we have before- us , Papi But he is such a nice guy so responsible and so deserving of all of this that I am going to do my best, with your help, to steer him in right and teach him properly.
He is your grandson And I am so proud of him , my son! His father , your son
De ar Seniors,
Learning has never been easy.
We have to lose a little sometimes before we can win,
We have to make disc overy a way of life.
Sometimes we did push you But only to make you stronger
All we did was plant some seeds and Share beginnings, Your inner light will cause those seeds to grow and blossom
Synchronicity means designing your life, Making it happen,
The spiral is a symbol of life Moving onward and upward
The right thing at the right time
Transforming empty yesterdays into full tomorrows
Take us with you in spirit as you go
So much of you is behind!
