Dear SSA Families and Friends:
SSA’s mission centers on educating young women and preparing them to face the many changes and challenges of the future. During the 2023-24 school year, we celebrated our 120th birthday! We began with a birthday celebration complete with confetti and birthday cupcakes. Each month, we highlighted a decade with an Alumnae speaker series. All faculty, staff and students received a 120th commemorative pin, and our yearbook highlighted this special milestone.
Each year, our community focuses on a different aspect of Benedictine spirituality and heritage that serves to anchor us in our faith. While we celebrated our birthday, we continued our plan to include a faith-based theme on a five year rotation so our students can learn one aspect of the Rule of Benedict each year. The 2023-24 theme was “Nihil amori Christi praeponere”- Prefer nothing whatsoever to the love of Christ. Our focus with our faculty, staff and students was to put Christ at the center of everything we do and to focus on seeing the love of Christ in each other.
The Class of 2024 senior motto was “Strangers we came, sisters we go.” The seniors truly became sisters. They started a new tradition with a sleepover in the gym, and they were instrumental in bringing back the powderpuff football game. Although the class was one of the smallest in recent history, the heart with which they lived out the pillars of prayer, work, study, and community has left a lasting mark on our SSA family.
Participation in our annual fund exceeded our expectations. Through the generosity of our current parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, alumnae, alumnae families, and friends, we were able to secure the funds to begin work on phase one of our athletic complex. During the 202324 school year, we also continued work on our five-year strategic plan. The committees for each of the seven strategic goals met regularly, and many of the goals have already been accomplished. More information on the strategic plan can be found in the yearly summary in the annual report.
Our beloved Academy remains rooted in the Benedictine tradition of prayer, work, study, and community, a tradition that began in 1903 and continues to ground our community today. St. Scholastica Academy is blessed with the continued support of our alumnae, faculty, staff, friends, parents, and students. Thank you for partnering with us to further this tradition. As the Benedictines say, “May you experience the Lord’s peace in each moment of every day.”
In the Spirit of St. Scholastica, Sheri H. Gillio, M. Ed.
OUR MISSION
St. Scholastica Academy is a Catholic, all-girls, college-preparatory high school located in Covington, Louisiana. Founded in 1903, SSA perpetuates the Benedictine tradition of balancing prayer, work, study, and community in developing adolescent girls into Christian women grounded in the Gospel values of the Catholic faith.
“I am grateful to have been surrounded by such great women who empowered and supported me throughout my high school career. “
~ Anna Rose McHugh, Class of 2024, Student Council President
THANK YOU FOR A GREAT YEAR!
Dear SSA Community,
St Scholastica greets me every morning. If you have ever entered the “Grey House,” you know the portrait I am talking about. Since I began working at SSA, St Scholastica has directed me in ways that are unexplainable. During a summer trip to Boston, I spotted her prayer card. Just a few days ago, a friend sent me a picture of a painting of St. Scholastica she found in a religious store. I feel that these little “ St Scholastica winks” are sent to remind me of my purpose, which is to advance the mission of St Scholastica Academy.
Your generosity has given me the tools to fulfill my purpose this past school year. The funds raised allowed us to hire a full-time resource officer for the 2024-2025 school year, install protective film on all lower-level windows, add fencing to help enclose our campus, and get one step closer to completing phase one of the Athletic Complex.
Thank you for believing in our mission. Thank you for believing in our girls. Keep your eyes open to the little winks St. Scholastica sends you, and know that they are signs of the difference you are making in our community.
In Gratitude

St. Tammany Health System and St. Scholastica Academy, two pillars of the community now joined in a health, academic, and service partnership.
Last year, as SSA celebrated 120 years of forming young women on the Northshore, St. Tammany Health System also celebrated a significant milestone: 70 years of providing world-class healthcare close to home. In September 2024, St. Scholastica Academy and St. Tammany Parish Hospital announced a new milestone: a partnership in Health, Academics and Service. Although the partnership is set to be publicly announced in December, both organizations worked on this collaboration for over a year. Partners in service and community relations for years, an Academic Partnership was a natural next step.
St. Tammany Health System’s mission has long been intertwined with education, and the Academic Center was specifically designed to train the next generation of healthcare professionals here on the Northshore. The center’s opening was hailed as a watershed moment for healthcare education. SSA’s administration and students in the HOSA club were proud to have been invited to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this year.
This partnership allows our students to receive real-world, hands-on experience through shadowing and skillbased sessions and field trips. Additionally, students in Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Math classes will participate in extended learning activities and certifications such as Stop the Bleed and First Aid.
One of the most impactful partnership moments so far was when the Academy welcomed a panel of special guests from St. Tammany Health System to lead a “Women in Healthcare” symposium for our juniors and seniors. Joan Coman, president and CEO of St. Tammany Health Systems, moderated the panel’s interactive discussion about healthcare careers. Topics included the panel’s personal educational and career journeys, ways for students to engage with the medical community, advice to navigate medical discipline options, and methods to achieve a work/life balance in the medical field.
We are excited to witness this partnership flourish as our girls navigate their studies and explore career opportunities. Working collaboratively, SSA and STHS will shape the next generation of healthcare professionals.

4TH ANNUAL run SATURDAY APRIL 12
by Christina Bolling, Patricia’s Granddaughter
I am writing to share a special photo with you that we recently took of my MawMaw under SSA’s “Celebrating 120 Years” banner. My MawMaw, whose name is Patricia Leleaux (maiden name was Krebs), graduated from SSA in 1950, and her connection to the school holds a profound significance for our family.
MawMaw’s family played a pivotal role in the development of Bogalusa, as her father was recruited to lead the engineering department of the paper mill. Despite being one of seven children, my MawMaw’s desire for a Catholic education led her to passionately plead with her parents for the opportunity to attend SSA. As a boarder, she would eagerly arrive on campus each Sunday night and remain there until Friday afternoon, when she would return to Bogalusa.
At 91 years old, my grandmother has started showing signs of dementia. Despite this, her memories of SSA remain incredibly vivid and impactful. She has always cherished her time at SSA, and it has been a consistent source of joy and nostalgic storytelling for her. This week, while driving by the campus, she expressed a strong desire to see it again. As we passed by the banner celebrating SSA’s 120th year, she joyfully requested a photo, proudly declaring, “I’m a part of that celebration!” With her excitement and deep emotional connection to SSA in mind, I wanted to share this photo with you all. MawMaw’s cherished memories at SSA decades ago continues to be a treasured part of her life, and it continues to bring her immense joy and comfort, especially as other memories slowly begin to fade.
I believe that sharing this photo with the SSA community would not only bring a smile to my MawMaw’s face, but also serve as a reminder of the enduring impact and legacy of SSA on its students. The school’s rich history has left an indelible imprint on my MawMaw’s life, and I am certain that she is not alone in feeling this way.
I would like to express my gratitude for the role the faculty and staff have played in shaping the lives of students like my MawMaw over the past 120 years. The dedication and commitment of the SSA community have left an enduring impact on generations of students, and my family is eternally grateful for the education, support, and memories that SSA provided for my MawMaw.
Cheers could be heard throughout the gym when the administration announced the return of the Powderpuff Game. Coaches were selected, grade-level teams were formed, and t-shirts were ordered, all in preparation for the big game. The 8th graders, our Baby Doves, fought their way through the bracket to face our Senior Doves in the final match. The Senior Doves scored the final touchdown, winning the Powerpuff Championship. Two weeks later, our champions crossed the causeway to face the Powderpuff Champions from The Academy of Our Lady in what we now call the “ Battle of the Birds.” The Doves’ were victorious, bringing the trophy to Covington where it lives until next year’s game. Thank you to all who came out to support our SSA teams.
SSA partnered with Northshore Community Foundation to restructure and strengthen the existing service programs, including junior and senior outreach days. NCF helped SSA pair each grade level with a specific nonprofit organization and then hosted leaders of those nonprofits in meetings with students. Focusing on grade-specific causes helps students be more intentional about serving the community in meaningful ways. Collaborating with NCF will help Doves foster a lifelong philanthropic relationship with those in need, living out the mission of SSA’s Community pillar.
St. Scholastica’s Feast Day is always very special at the Academy. As a community, we pay tribute to our patroness, St. Scholastica. This year, the day began with Mass, celebrated by our chaplain, Rev. Msgr. Frank Giroir. After Mass, Fr. Frank blessed the 120-year pins given to all students and faculty and the legacy pins presented to the legacy students by their mothers or grandmothers.
Amy Schroeder May, ‘88, was then recognized as the 2024 Alumna of the Year. This award celebrates an alum who has distinguished herself personally and professionally and upholds the ideals of SSA. She demonstrates SSA values in her life and represents the Academy with dedication and distinction. May is an active alumnae board member and generous SSA volunteer.
Mrs. Bonnie Nicaud, former SSA theology teacher and campus minister, was presented with the Marguerite Celestin Distinguished Service Award, named after its first recipient, Marguerite Celestin. This award recognizes a non-alumna supporter of SSA who significantly contributes to the school community and supports its mission by promoting the four pillars of prayer, work, study, and community.
Students and special guests continued the Feast Day celebration with a special Italian lunch in honor of our patron’s home country, as well as music, activities, and an SSA trivia game. Intercessory prayers to St. Scholastica to protect us from storms were answered, as the weather was perfect for such a special day.
Bonnie Nicaud’s legacy to St. Scholastica Academy is the more tangible and expansive understanding of the Benedictine charism of balancing prayer, work, study, and community. Through Bonnie’s years as theology teacher and campus minister, this beautiful motto became infused into every aspect of SSA life. Bonnie often spoke about the notion of SSA being “holy ground” where many holy women and men came together to teach and help young women to learn and grow into women of faith. These young women who “could do more because they loved more” would eventually become leaders in their families, as well as in their local, regional, national, and global communities. Bonnie wrote the script for Feast Day that tells the story of Scholastica and her brother, Benedict, the same script used today. The impact of Bonnie’s focus cannot be underestimated, as the Benedictine motto is still used in our students’ assignments, costumes and banners for spirit days, school Masses, and the Alma Mater.
PRAYER, WORK, STUDY, and COMMUNITY became more than four words on a brass plaque; they became the heart of SSA’s mission by which everything else is centered.
Amy Schroeder May has embodied the Benedictine pillars of prayer, work, study, and community since she was an SSA student over 40 years ago, making her the ideal Alumna of the Year recipient. Dedication to the SSA community continues to be an integral part of Amy’s life. While a student at SSA, Amy was involved in student council and various clubs, served as a class officer, played on SSA’s first soccer team, was a member of the sweetheart court, an SPS cheerleader, and was named homecoming queen her senior year (‘88). After graduating from Ole Miss in 1992, Amy married Carlton May (SPS ‘84) and had two children, both students at LSU; Bronson (SPS ‘20) is a senior, and Austill (SSA ‘22) is a sophomore. When daughter Austill was an SSA student, Amy was a member of the Parent Club and cochaired the Falaya Fling, an event in which she continues to take an active role. Amy is the current president of the SSA Advisory Board and chair of the Advisory Board Advancement Committee. Formerly the president of the Alumnae Board, Amy now serves as a very active member of the Alumnae Association, participating in many Alumnae events. Amy’s involvement at SSA during the past several decades is a blessing to our school community.
As part of SSA’s 120-year celebration, we highlighted the Student Council theme of “Traveling Through the Decades” by inviting alums from various decades to speak to the student body about their time at SSA.
We identified Yvonne Cornibe Decker, Class of 1943, as our oldest alum and discovered that her grandson is married to one of our faculty members—Mrs. Valerie Scoggin! Mrs. Scoggin created a wonderful slide show with an interview of her grandmother-in-law to share with the girls. It was so interesting to learn about life as a boarding school student in the 1940s.
Students also heard from Sister Jean D’Arc, Class of 1954, who returned to SSA as principal from 1972 to 1979. Sr. D’Arc took the girls back in time by sharing how things were as a student and then as the principal a couple of decades later.
The next speaker was the hilarious Pat Jackson, Class of 1961. She entertained the
girls with stories about her time as a “drillette” and a sleep-walking boarder, as well as riding in a feed truck to get ice cream on Claiborne Hill. Mrs. Pat is a wonderful example of what it means to be an alumna of SSA. She was selected as Alumna of the Year in 1993 and has been an active member of the Alumnae Board for decades.
The October speakers were Pauline Gorny Calderone and Lisa Mott Dugger, Class of 1973. Pauline spoke about her experience as one of the original Golden Blues and even brought her uniform! Lisa spoke about how wonderful the SSA sisterhood is and the importance of getting together as a class. The Class of ‘73 recently spent an entire weekend celebrating their 50-year reunion.
January’s speaker, Kim Winston Bigler, Class of 1991, was perfect for the New Year. Always a dynamic public speaker, Kim captivated the students with her message of faith and perseverance. She shared her life story from a student to a foster care advocate to a caregiver, as her son Phoenix continues rehabilitation after a miraculous recovery from an accident last summer. Kim is also the founder of James Samaritan, a non-profit organization that supports children in foster care.
As we continued traveling through the decades, Janell Weil Gaudin, Class of 2002, spoke about her time as an SSA student and her career as an attorney. Janell gave the girls tips on confidence, negotiating contracts, and the reality of the gender pay gap in the workforce.
Audrey Gitz DeAgno and Sara Kuebel, Class of 2011, were the final alums to speak in this series. Coincidentally, the two were in the same law school class, where Sara was the Exec President of the Student Bar Association and Audrey was Class President. Audrey spoke about her career in real estate law, and Sara told the students about her career in maritime law. Both ladies shared memories of their time at SSA before explaining their current accomplishments and how they balance work and life as young adults.
Many thanks to these alumnae who generously shared their SSA experiences with our students. Their stories, insights, and words of wisdom made the 120-year celebration even more memorable.

St. Scholastica Academy is in the fourth year of our five-year Strategic Plan. The strategic planning process began in the fall of 2020 and was completed in September of 2021. Based on interviews, surveys, and focus group sessions, the strategic planning committee identified seven areas of focus: Catholic identity, academic excellence, student life, enrollment, advancement, finance, and facilities. Goals and objectives then emerged from each area of focus. The strategic plan provides a road map for the Academy as it continues to educate students in the Benedictine tradition of prayer, work, study, and communit y.
In this fourth year, the Benedictine theme, “Prefer nothing whatsoever to the love of Christ” was implemented. Students created a song, prayer, and chant based on the theme. Mission trips were reintroduced when students and faculty worked in Kentucky in July. Restructured the service program with gradelevels partnering with community organizations.
Professional development focused on Kagan strategies to ensure more student engagement. A senior internship course was implemented and included a semester ofwork experience in local businesses. An unstructured block (U Block) was incorporated to allow students time for a mental health break, eat a snack, meet with teachers, or catch up on schoolwork within the school day. The Scholastica Scholars Program was created to identify rising juniors who scored in the top 15% on standardized testing and prepare them for the PSAT.
Engaged students and the school community in athletic events to increase school spirit and pride. Grade levels were assigned basketball games to host, and planned themes and games for each game. Other programs included: Choir members were scheduled to sing the National Anthem, a prize wheel for positive student behavior and enhanced the Big/Lil Sister program. The tradition of the Powderpuff football game returned with a competition between the grade levels. The final event was a championship game between the SSA Doves and the Academy of Our Lady Penguins, establishing a new tradition of the “Battle of the Birds.” Expanded the exchange program; six families hosted students, and two students traveled to Costa Rica in the summer. Introduced the Wing Women Program: Juniors paired with freshmen to create a connection between grade levels.
Goal #4:
Develop a Comprehensive Enrollment Management Plan
Created a retention committee composed of teachers, counselors, staff, and administration. Expanded the “Sneak A-Peek” day to include all three Catholic feeder schools. Created a 5th grade program, “Let’s Get Creative with SSA,” to encourage younger students to visit campus during the school year.
Goal #5:
Develop a Comprehensive Plan for Advancing the Mission
Created alumnae-owned business decals and displayed in local businesses. In celebration of the 120th anniversary, each month an alumna from a specific decade spoke to the student body. Raiser’s Edge, a comprehensive advancement data base, was purchased and will be fully implemented in 24-25. The first Color Clash Class Competition raised money for the Athletic Complex.
Create a Plan to Ensure Financial Stability to Support the Mission
The finance committee recommended identifying a fundraiser to increase safety measures on campus. The proceeds from Falaya Fling were dedicated to fund safety initiatives. The Advancement Committee and Finance Committee chairs worked to identify additional funding sources. The Annual Fund secured funds to begin work at the Athletic Complex.
Goal #7:
Ensure the Continued Viability of Current Facilities and Evaluate the Need for Future Facilities
In partnership with Greenleaf Architects, a master plan for the Athletic Complex was completed. The Grey House foundation was repaired and a deferred maintenance assessment spreadsheet was created.
