Lionheart is a brand-new specialist provision at Beech Lodge School for children and young people aged 8 -17 with Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and related learning difficulties

Lionheart

Children who are unable to access reading and writing as well as their peers often feel “stupid”, lack self-esteem, confidence and eventually give up. At Lionheart we will empower and enable those children to understand that “Great Minds Think Differently” and will provide them with a tailored curriculum and equip them with learning tools that will allow them to achieve their potential.

Lionheart pupils are in classes of no more than 12 pupils with specialist teachers and full-time teaching assistants in every class. The working day is broken down into manageable chunks with lessons being delivered using engaging and multisensory methods proven to be more effective for learners with SpLD requirements.

Many of the pupils at Lionheart will have received adequate support in their previous schools but the academic demands and expectations of traditional mainstream school can often be too challenging for those with specific learning difficulties to meet. At Lionheart, pupils will be working at the same academic level as their classmates with input from specialist OCR Dyslexia qualified teachers and teaching assistants. Pupils will enjoy alternative educational pathways and a range of both academic and vocational qualifications to enable them to succeed.

Our ultimate aim is for our pupils to enjoy their educational journey and have them ready for the future whether that is a return to mainstream, further education or the workplace.

The tailored curriculum is delivered by SpLD experienced class teachers and includes daily individual support lessons in Literacy and Numeracy as required.

At Beech Lodge we focus on the development of academic and life skills through the principles of overlearning and an all-encompassing accessibility to education and learning for all. This philosophy is embedded within a nurturing approach which puts relationships and a sophisticated understanding of child development at its heart.

Alongside the more traditional classroom-based learning, children have the opportunity to study subjects including Food Technology, Art, Music, Life Skills, Animal Management, Outdoor Adventurous Activities, Applied Technology and Construction. The aims of our curriculum are to enable every child to reach their true potential and allow them to feel safe and confident in their learning environment.

Activities Students have access to GCSE qualifications as well as vocational qualifications as they progress through the school.

When out of the classroom we offer an extensive range of supporting activities and clubs including: n

About Beech Lodge School Beech Lodge School is a small independent co-educational day school for children aged 7-18. We are a Values Based School and are recognised for our unique and pioneering approach to education. We opened in 2013 in response to a demand for a school that had an empathic and nurturing environment for children and young people who are unable to reach their potential in a conventional school setting. Many of our pupils have been bullied, misunderstood, are anxious and have experienced developmental trauma which all impacts on their ability to learn. Child Development and Attachment Theory underpin our entire school approach and at Beech Lodge we focus on the individual, with emotional wellbeing and the importance of good relationships embedded throughout the whole school community.
