Together for Bedford

Ever since we were founded by Sir William Harpur in 1566, The Harpur Trust has been providing education and supporting the most disadvantaged people in Bedford

We have grown and evolved hugely, yet we remain true to our roots. Our long-term strategic plan, Together for Bedford, commits us to invest in people’s futures, and to work for a whole generation to enable more children and young people facing disadvantage to achieve their potential.

www.harpurtrust.org.uk

Welcome to the 16th annual Bedford Festival Fringe. More than 140 events over 11 days across 4 venues!

Here we go again! Only this time you may have noticed we have gone for slightly higher quality print with our brochure We were basically getting fed up with the ink from the back page rubbing off onto our hands when distributing them! You may also notice an increase in events especially free music! That’s thanks to the musical legend that is Mat Roberts who has helped programme these extra acts –thanks Mat!

One of my highlights this year is a show called Priorité à Gauche: Secret Gig (July 29). This was in fact the first ever act I booked as a Bedford promoter so hugely excited that they are back on the road and coming to Bedfringe.

Almost half of this year’s programme is free or a voluntary donation with many other shows as low as £5 per ticket, so please do support these artists.

Many thanks to all our sponsors, performers and you, the audience Happy fringing!

Welcome to Bedfringe 2023! James may have some more letters after his name, but we know it’s us whose words you read avidly when you get your shiny new Bedfringe brochure We don’t think that our teenage selves, who first got involved in Bedfringe (2007 for Fi and 2008 for Lily), would quite believe that in 2023 we would have agents offering us their acts, record numbers of applicants or be going from strength to strength after a global pandemic, yet here we are, and we could not be prouder

This year, more than ever, there is a huge diversity of acts and performers we have been able to bring to Bedford. There is truly something for everyone, and we encourage you to see not only your favourites but also something totally new. Fringe offers a world of discovery with every hour bringing something new, this is the year to embrace that. Thank you so much for continuing to support Bedfringe, it means the world to us.

Please help us in shouting about it from the rooftops, tell your family, tell your friends, tell your enemies if you wish –we are on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook (all @bedfringe) or do just go outside and shout from your literal roof top. We encourage all!

See you in July…

HIDDEN STORIES

Has the British Justice System failed women? Two new and powerful playlets uncover the true stories of Ruth Ellis and Edith Thompson hanged and executed for murder and looks at the severe miscarriage of justice created by the English legal system.

Now You See Me

Ruth Ellis was the last woman to be hanged in England in 1955 She admitted to the murder of her lover David Blakely – a violent and controlling man who caused Ruth to miscarry days before his death. A male friend gave Ruth a gun and showed her how to use it He was never questioned

Darlint Peidi

Edith Thompson was executed in 1923 alongside her young lover Frederick Bywaters She apparently knew nothing of the plan to murder her husband Bywaters always maintained he acted alone, but Thompson was older and seen as an immoral seducer. Was she executed for adultery rather than murder?

LIFE UNDER THE SUN

A theatre show that explores the biggest question of all:

“What’s the point?”

Features underpants, pompous man-servants, self-deprecating witticisms, an existential crisis and one giant hangover

King Solomon was a man who had it all

Life Under The Sun is a one man show based on the book of Ecclesiastes Well described as Blackadder meets the Bible, it is a dark comedy with a unique mix of ancient verse offset against pantomime and the dry wit of stand-up. “Few works of visual arts down the centuries can boast of matching Scripture’s vision of Solomon’s magnificent desolation as it is rendered in Holy prose. Bathurst’s startling and ambitious ‘Life Under The Sun is one of them” ★★★★ GET YOUR COATS ON 60 minutes duration includes 10 minutes post show Q & A

Hi, I’m Jess, I’ve loved singing for as long as I can remember although it’s taken me a very long time to sing in front of people

I love songs that are full of soul and expression which is why musicians from the 50s through to the 90s are my biggest influences

As a little girl I remember trying to sing and play Elvis Presley’s “that’s alright mama” on my little pink acoustic guitar

Mainly performing songs from the 1950s and 1960s (with a few other eras thrown in for good measure), Samantha has previously performed at Twinwood Festival and the Festival of Vintage in York and is now a regular performer on the Bedford music scene

Having Irish heritage, she was crowned the senior British tenor banjo and mandolin champion two years running, as well as being placed 2nd in the All-Ireland world music championships on the mandolin in 2004

You’ll hear Samantha draw on these influences in her guitar playing as she takes you on a trip down memory lane, performing a selection of well-known classics from a variety of musical genres including County and Western, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Motown, Rhythm & Blues and 1960s pop

SARAH ELLEN

Sarah Ellen is a local cat enthusiast, actor and regular at open mic nights This is her first gig, accompanied by the wonderful Mat Roberts Sarah has performed at Bedfringe before as an actor but is excited to be singing here for the first time

So thrilled that she took a selfie in a nearby bush for the occasion

Whilst singing the entire soundtrack of CATS initially felt like the obvious choice, she’ll be singing a mixture of relaxed acoustic covers (this time) You can expect big vocals and big personality

She wasn’t sure how best to sell herself, so has asked some ‘fans’ to write a word or two each to describe her sound

‘Whimsical’ – ‘Emotional’ – ‘Good’ – ‘No comment’ – ‘Meow’

It’s probably best that you come down and check it out, so that next time she has more words for her bio
