Summer Adventures has been a Bedford tradition since 1975! Operated by the Bedford Recreation Department, the program offers children a safe, supportive, and fun-filled summer where lifelong memories are made. With a wide variety of activities, there truly is something for everyone. From making new friends and discovering new interests to enjoying favorite activities, each day is packed with laughter, excitement, and adventure We hope your child will join us for an unforgettable summer experience they’ll treasure for years to come

Director:
Ben Richter Ben is excited to begin his 19th season at Summer Adventures, marking his second year as the program director During the school year, Ben is a third grade teacher Outside of work, Ben enjoys spending time with his dog on walks, cooking, and taking on various house projects
He is thrilled to step into this new role and looks forward to another exciting summer ahead

Kelsie Butler
Kelsie Butler is entering her 8th year at Summer Adventures and her 5th year as Administrative Coordinator She is a 5th-grade teacher with a passion for sports, photography, drawing, running, and baking Kelsie is excited for another wonderful summer filled with new experiences and opportunities

Assistant Director:
Maria Linnehan Maria is excited to return for her 15th summer at BSA and 5th season as Assistant Director Maria has been a second grade teacher for 6 years In her free time, Maria enjoys running, hiking, spending time at the beach, and going on road trips She is looking forward to warmer weather and another fantastic summer at BSA

Who are the Staff at Summer Adventures?
Our staff consists of experienced teachers, college students, and High School students who are carefully selected, trained, and supported Many of our counselors return year after year, creating a consistent, welcoming environment and making Summer Adventures a rich and rewarding experience for every child.

Refund Policy:

Notice must be given 10 business days’ prior to program start for refund If the required notice is given, refunds will be issued less 10% of the cost of the program

Junior Adventures (Age 4 by 6/30/26Entering Kindergarten)
This program is designed especially for our youngest participants. With low staffto-child ratios and a nurturing environment, children enjoy a well-rounded schedule that includes art, nature, music, cooperative games and sports, imaginative play, and water play (on site, plus one weekly visit to the Springs Brook Park Spray Park). Each session includes one field trip, and a program T-shirt is provided Programs are offered in two-week sessions

Senior Adventures (Entering Grade 5)
Designed as a bridge between Summer Adventures and Adventures Away, this program is for children entering Grade 5 Each day is packed with excitement, including theme days, special visitors and events, cooperative games and sports, art, music and drama, woodworking, science, archery, electives and even more field trips!
In addition, this group will enjoy extra field trips each session, including visits to Springs Brook Park

Summer Adventures (Entering Grade 1-4)
Designed for children to explore a wide variety of developmentally appropriate activities while building new friendships. Each day is filled with excitement, including theme days, special visitors and events, cooperative games and sports, art, music and drama, woodworking, science, archery, and electives
The program includes one offsite field trip per session, and a program T-shirt is included. Swim lessons at Springs Brook Park are offered for Grades 1–4*
Please note: Late registrations may not be accommodated in swim lessons. If space is unavailable, children will participate in free swim during lesson time

Adventures Away (Entering Grades 6-8)
This program features a series of day field trips (no overnights) and is based at Summer Adventures at John Glenn Middle School
Each day includes an off-site trip, along with time back at Summer Adventures for games, sports, and crafts
Destinations may include laser tag, mini golf, Canobie Lake Park, Water Country, indoor water park, Stone Zoo, Chunky’s, and Southwick’s Zoo. A detailed trip schedule will be shared prior to the start of each week Programs are offered in one-week sessions.

Counselor In Training
(Must be entering Grade 8 or 9 in the Fall of 2026)

The CIT program is designed for those individuals who are interested in learning about recreation, leadership and working with children The CITs will assist with day to day set up, clean up and maintenance. They will also assist counselors, working hands on with Summer Adventures activities and participants CITs will receive direction and supervision from Summer Adventures Directors Completion of this program does not guarantee future employment for any recreation program
CIT applicants must submit a CIT application and attend an interview. Those selected will be required to attend orientation the week of June 22 (exact days/times TBD)
CIT Fee: $250/Session 2 & 3, $225 for session 1 (Sessions correspond to Summer Adventures sessions; students may apply for one, two or all three sessions).

Early Bird & Extended Day Care
Early Bird consists of supervised quiet games in the cafeteria or active games in the gym and runs 8:00-9:00 AM
Extended Day consists of trips to Springs Brook Park* and activities at BHS and runs from SA dismissal until 6:00 p.m. Pickup is 5:00-6:00 p m at the town playground on Mudge Way (indoors at BHS if rainy) Extended Day is for Grades 1+ only.
Additional coverage options are available at the Bedford Recreation Kids’ Club. Extended Day is available to those in Grades 1 5. Please note that Extended Day will not be held August 8, the last day of the program
*Children engaging in free swim at Extended Day will be tested for swim ability according to Christian’s Law Children will be tested by Recreation swim staff and non-swimmers and at risk swimmers will be required to stay in a designated area in water that is no deeper than two feet. For all non-swimmers and at risk swimmers, Coast Guard approved life vests will be fit by trained staff and available if requested by child or parent Christian’s Law information: https://www mass gov/info-details/christians-law
