President’s Note My grandfather, who was born in Brooklyn during the Great Depression, never passed a kids’ lemonade stand without making a contribution - even though he didn’t really like lemonade. Seeing him take time to do it on more than one occasion when I was a little kid and asking him why he made a thing of it, he explained his idea of the importance of charity to me. When he inquired inside about the totaled car…the barista, Tony DeVito, explained that it was actually his car - or what used to be his car - and revealed what a devastating loss it was for him. He explained that he needed the car to get to work at Breads N’ Bakes and at his other job at The Bedford Post - and that neither his own insurance nor any third party or their insurers would cover the total-insurable-loss-

I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Clive Davis to interview him for our Cover Feature in the Jan/Feb ‘23 issue of Bedford & New Canaan Magazine…and then feeling a little special that Clive knew me when I saw him from time to time. Clive was legendary! As the leading music scout and producer of his time. And as an icon of a businessman. His legacy is indeed ‘The Soundtrack of Our Lives’, and his influence will be felt each time anyone listens to any one of the hundreds of hit tunes he helped bring to life. Clive was really, really smart. He knew everything about music. But he knew everything about a lot of other things too. Like pop culture. And the law. And the Yankees. And Clive was fastidious. About the way he dressed - always in a jacket and tie. About the way his house in Pound Ridge and his apartment in the Ritz Tower in Manhattan were decorated and kept. About maintaining friendships with his large circle of friends. About just about everything. …He, in fact, had even carefully planned every detail of his own funeral, down to the location and arrangements at Central Synagogue - where he’d been a member for more than half-a-century, and who would be invited and who would sit where…and as several of the dignitaries in attendance noted, he would have been thrilled to have been there!

Twenty-five years after losing their son, Brad, on September 11, Mary and Frank Fetchet have transformed unimaginable grief into their life’s work. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Mary and Frank Fetchet’s oldest son, Brad, an Equities Trader at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods,

As Mary would later tell the 9/11 Commission, “Brad was planning to become engaged to his girlfriend of three years, Brooke. When Brad died, my husband and I lost a son and our dreams for his future - a wedding, a daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. His younger brothers lost their best friend, a coach, a mentor, a confidant, and a companion. Brad was part of us.” Shortly after the first plane struck the North Tower, Brad called Frank at work. He also left a message for Mary at home. He was in the South Tower and wanted his parents to know that he was all right. His building, he had been told, was safe. …Minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175 struck the

The process of collecting those materials was itself a form of healing.
Families could talk about who their loved ones had been before
September 11… their personalities, jokes, friendships, ambitions and ordinary moments. For Mary, whose professional background had taught
her the importance of allowing people to grieve in their own way and on their own timeline, remembrance became another form of care. “It also became an important piece of the historical record. As a generation comes of age with no personal memory of September 11, at VOICES, we see education as increasingly important. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum plays an essential role,” Mary says, “but organizations like VOICES carry something different - lived experience. And we’re still collecting information and personal stories to this day.” “I don’t see the impact of 9/11 going away,” Mary says. “It’s a rippling effect… In the immediate aftermath of a catastrophe, resources pour-in. Attention is focused. Agencies mobilize. Communities rally. But months and years as survivors and families continue living with the consequences. VOICES was built around a different model - continuity of care.” In addition, over time, the Fetchets began to recognize that many of the lessons painfully learned after September 11 could help people confronting other tragedies. “I remember I was at a seminar on trauma response when I first heard about Sandy Hook,” Mary recounts, “and I thought, we can help!” “Twenty-five years after September 11, responders and survivors continue to become ill and die from conditions related to their exposure at the World Trade Center site. VOICES continues helping members of the 9/11 community navigate the World Trade Center Health Program and access medical and mental-health services, compensation programs, peer support and other resources. But we’ve also used the expertise and resources that we’ve organized to support communities affected by mass violence - including Sandy Hook, Parkland and Charleston. And the objective is not simply to respond when tragedy happens, but it is to build networks before they are needed. Consequences can be mitigated when people have the resources they need,” Mary says. “That didn’t happen after 9/11. And we are helping to mitigate that in future tragedies.”

Julian Schlossberg is one of America’s most prolific show business producers and distributors…and he lives in Katonah!
Julian was born in the Bronx in 1942. He attended public schools, and then graduated from N.Y.U. with honors. He joined the Army in 1962 and did six months of active duty at Fort Dix, before serving in the Reserves for 5 more years to complete his service. Notwithstanding his enormous accomplishments, he’s unpretentious, warm, and engaging. He’s a bank of cultural knowledge and remains intellectually curious, and he’s more interested in finding out about you than talking about himself. “I grew up with radio and during the advent of television, and I was hooked on show biz from an early age,” Julian recalls. “The New York Times used to publish ‘TV Highlights of the Week’ in their Arts & Leisure section, and I kept a spreadsheet - on a yellow legal pad - documenting which TV channel had the most highlights. I would go into Manhattan to watch TV dress rehearsals and return home in time to watch the show on TV that evening - studying the changes which were made from dress rehearsal to production.” “In 1964, I got a job as one of about forty college graduates at the ABC network. I made $90 dollars a week and all my friends were getting paid more in their various jobs in other industries, but I realized that worrying about how much I was going to make was not the key to finding success in show business,” Julian continues. “In 1970 I tracked down Max Liebman, who had produced the groundbreaking TV program Your Show Of Shows with Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner, and other comic luminaries, and found he had the collection of’ and all 156 90-minute kinescopes. I visited Max in his office in the back of Town Hall on West 56th Street and convinced him to let me produce a motion picture based on a selection of ten of those fabulous sketches. And in just about half-a-year, thousands of students have already used the platform. The property remained in Jay family hands until the death of Eleanor Jay Iselin in 1953, and in 1957, the John Jay Homestead Association, led by Otto Koegel, was founded to save the property for public benefit. With the Association’s help, the Homestead became the property of New York State in 1959 and, after some restoration, was opened to the public in 1964.

In the early 1970s, the John Jay Homestead Association disbanded. Friends of John Jay Homestead was founded in 1977 to serve as the State’s philanthropic and programmatic

Even as early as the mid-18th Century, savvy investors were seeking out real estate opportunities in what would become Westchester County. John Jay actually grew up in Rye. He entered King’s College - today’s Columbia University - in 1760, when he was just fourteen. The curriculum was heavily focused on the classics including Greek, Latin, religion, philosophy, and oratory. Jay also studied natural sciences, math, and literature. Importantly, he was exposed to Hugo Grotius’ treatise on international law – a weighty subject for a teenager to ponder, but an area that Jay returned to repeatedly in his career. His career as a lawyer began as a law clerk, and after three years he was granted a master’s degree for behaving ‘soberly and decently’. Having served his State and his Country continuously for twenty-seven years, Jay finally retired to the life of being a gentleman farmer - at what is now known as John Jay Homestead State Historic Site, in Bedford, in 1801. He’d inherited acreage in Bedford from his mother, Mary Van Cortland, originally purchased by his maternal grandfather, Jacobus VanCortlandt, and then he’d purchased other parcels to create a sevenhundred-fifty acre farm. Then, in 1787, he contracted for the construction of the earliest section of what would become known as Bedford House, and the original edition was completed in 1790, and then expanded when the Jays moved in full-time at the turn of the Century. Jay provided detailed instructions to the builders regarding dimensions, finishings, and fixtures and supervised every phase of the construction. After the house was completed and before moving-in permanently, Jay visited the property to provide direction for constructing farm buildings, purchasing several mills, and experimenting in farming techniques, and Jay took particular interest and delight in the planting of fruit trees. Jay meant for the house to be one of substance, built with superior materials, but specifically did not want the house to be built on a grand scale. It was close enough to New York for visitors, but far enough away to beg-off on unwanted commitments. Although Sarah Jay died in 1802, Jay continued to enjoy the house, the farm, and regular rides through the countryside for another twenty-seven years before dying at home at the age of 83.

hile John Jay is preeminent among the Founding Fathers, John Jay Homestead certainly does not enjoy the venerable status of Washington’s Mount Vernon or Jefferson’s Monticello. The house was and remains well situated on a rise overlooking fields and distant hills, and has a presence that warrants reverence and careful preservation. But a quarter-of-a-millennium is a long time,
and the passage of time had taken its toll…and so Bedford House required a total restoration, conducted, of course, with the utmost attention to historical detail and John Jay’s enduring legacy.
While many in the neighboring communities know and love the Homestead for the Farm Market - which will return from its temporary location in Katonah upon completion of the restoration - fewer know about the restoration plans in store. This is something Friends hope to change. Friends of John Jay Homestead President, Caroline MacGill, notes that “We’re extremely grateful for the State’s commitment to the restoration of Bedford House, thankful for Martha’s amazing support, and totally

Carrie’s character acting is indeed so strong that - despite her having burst into stardom playing the lead role of Margo Dunne in the popular David Fincher-directed movie Gone Girl, having gained fans and critical acclaim playing the lead role of Honey on stage in Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? first at Steppenwolf and reprised on Broadway, and her playing the lead role of Bertha Russell in The Gilded Age - she is still presently regarded as more of a character actor than a leading lady. “...And that’s fine by me,” Carrie declares. “I think some of the greatest actors have been thought of as character actors. I act to expand my own humanity, and the more varied the characters I get to play the richer I become. And of course I’d love to get the leading role in the next great major motion picture directed by David Fincher or Maren Ade or Bong Joon Ho, but the call for female leads is few and far between these days, and TV occupies a more and more prestigious place in the world of acting. You get to develop a character over time in a TV series. And it’s way more reliable in terms of making a living.”

Carrie proclaims, but with enough hint of sarcasm to create confusion as to whether she’s just joking about being funny. She is focused, clear, direct, obviously brilliant… and a tad harried. “I grew up on a five-acre farm that had been in my family since the 1800s, in a small town outside of Akron called Copley. I was raised Catholic so there was a great deal of morality being
impressed. But humor also had a lot of capital in my family. There wasn’t much in the way of theater available, although my great-grandfather had owned the great Orpheum Movie House in Akron. I saw one play at the Weathervane in Akron, and that spurred me on to find an ad for a casting call in a local newspaper - but my mom worked at night as an E.R. nurse and she wasn’t going to drive me to an audition or rehearsals. I got the lead role in a production of Our Town my senior year in high school and that was the first time I had the chance to try acting. I would reprise that role my last year in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, where I was getting my MFA in Acting. It was the inaugural production at the new Overture Center in Madison, starring the great Andre De Shields as the Stage Manager. “My last year of the program, David Frank, the artistic director of the American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin - which was the recipient of this year’s regional Tony - cast me in our production of ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore’ and after we closed, he invited me to be an apprentice. I spent four years acting in a wide range of plays by Shakespeare, Shaw, Chekhov and other greats, and really learned a lot. It was my intention to make a living as an artist - and I was a terrible waitress– so I moved to Chicago and started to get some work on TV commercials and voiceovers. And I continued to do motion capture work for Raven Software in Wisconsin. Finally, I was cast on the main stage in Steppenwolf’s production of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and it went to Broadway. That summer, I was cast as a lead in the pilot of The Leftovers on HBO. And, shortly thereafter, I was fortunate enough to land a supporting role in David Fincher’s Gone Girl...and I’ve been working ever since.

“Still, whatever fame I’ve achieved, and including my more recent notoriety with The White Lotus and The Gilded Age, has been the result of decades of slow and steady work,” Carrie reflects. “I’m a working actor. I don’t take anything for granted and I couldn’t be more grateful. And one of the things about doing TV is that each job lasts five or six months and then you’re looking for your next job. …And I have two young children and share in the parenting and in running our house and family with my amazing husband, Tracy Letts, who is a playwright, screenwriter, and actor. My real life is a full time job! …And if being a mom isn’t enough to keep me humble, let me tell you my mom and dad and my siblings are not very impressed and often refer to me as ‘Three-time Emmy Loser’ and ‘Two-time Tony Loser’ just to make sure I don’t get too full of myself! …Besides, although I do get a lot of ‘don’t I know you from somewhere’ and do get recognized when I go out dressed-up and with make-up on - when I’m just in my sweatpants, I can still walk into DeCicco’s without being recognized by anyone - just like any other mom.” “As a long-time working actor, I’ve been guided by the motto that preparation is what the actor can bring to the table. Every part asks for something different and the better I understand the person I’m playing the more I can bring to the part,” Carrie shares. “But as I get older, I’m working more from the outside in. I’m very interested in extreme movement and physicality and want to use my whole body. Most TV and even most movies are filmed out of order, so on any given day you might shoot scenes from several different episodes, which is less satisfying than doing a play. …And I do watch my own work. As a woman of forty-five, it’s not getting easier to watch myself in high definition, but I do think it’s important to identify any bad habits that might be developing so I have the freedom to make other choices.”

“If you want to know what I do with any free time…it’s probably something
pretty mundane, like making sourdough or organizing a closet. I would love to start a garden, but haven’t found the time. I never take a nap. I
read a lot. And we’re always saying we need to get to the City more often, but often default to a night with friends in the community.”
“I’m interested in community organizations that propose actionable
steps, and particularly in support of our environment. …When I was eight years old, I noticed the city was clear-cutting large swaths of
trees around our reservoir, and I went to a city council meeting and made a speech in protest,” Carrie recalls. “I’m particularly impressed
with Bedford2030. I participate in their composting program. We did a
home energy assessment and have started to schedule some changes to our house systems. And we’re regulars at the Tioli Shed. …I am also doing advocacy around raising awareness about cytomegalovirus
- or CMV - which is the leading cause of birth defects in children, including deafness. The National CMV foundation is working to
pass legislation around testing, treatment and vaccination research.
…And I’m a big supporter of an organization called Plus One, and a friend and fan of its founder, Emily Simoness. The nonpartisan organization is
all about community building, political engagement, and combating the isolation that can be endemic to suburban life. I hope everyone will look it up…and get involved!”

Some of the greatest things I’ve gotten to do because I’m a ‘famous’ actor, include: working with Spielberg on the historical drama The Post; meeting Kamala Harris when we were on Colbert on the same night during the runup to the 2024 election; being invited to the Chanel show in Paris to see the Mathew Blaze collection, and; getting some pretty great seats to see Paul McCartney in Sacramento. …I almost got to meet one of my favorite singersongwriters, Aimee Mann, but I was too shy to go up and say ‘hello’ when I had the chance.

Choosing any one on their own meant leaving out an essential part of a story that was, ultimately, about what they accomplished together. So, to wrap up this year’s list, #18 belongs to the whole team! And it’s quite a finale! Last year, led by TJ, Sagi, and Haolin, Team MOB - short for Mechanical Operations Bureau - went from competing against teams across New York to becoming one of just 18 teams left competing for a world title this year. FIRST Tech Challenge is an international robotics competition in which students design, build, and program their own robots before putting them head-to-head in increasingly competitive tournaments. More than 100 teams competed across New York’s Excelsior region, which encompasses the state outside New York City, with just 32 advancing to its championship. Team MOB won the whole thing - earning a spot at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship in Houston, where more than 300 qualifying teams from across the U.S. and around the globe competed for the world title!
For Haolin, the process proved as valuable as the victories. “The whole experience was an awakening as a future engineer,” he says, “most especially for teaching about the trial-and-error process and emphasizing that there’s never only one right solution to a problem.” “What makes this team’s accomplishment so extraordinary is that John Jay has a two-year robotics program, and they managed to hold their own against incredibly well-funded international teams with four-year programs from China, Brazil, Romania, South Korea, and South Africa,” explains Robotics Program leader Jonathan Peter. “These three terrific students were the team leads, but every member played a role in the tremendous success.” And so, while TJ, Sagi, and Haolin are honored here,#18 belongs to everyone who helped get that robot from
