Our Year
2025-2026 1
Co-education With the
Confidence of Experience We are thrilled that Bedford Modern School has been commended for our provision in co-education in the 2026 Independent School of the Year Awards. For more than twenty years, BMS has educated girls and boys together, not as a transition or an initiative, but as an established part of who we are. Today, our community is close to an even balance of girls and boys. That matters because it creates a learning environment that feels natural, representative and reflective of modern society. Students are not part of a school adapting to coeducation. They are part of a community where co-education is fully embedded in everyday life.

Recognised for Excellence
Value for Money
We are delighted to celebrate Bedford Modern School’s “Very Good” Value for Money rating for the second consecutive year in the Daily Telegraph’s 2026 school rankings. Awarded following a holistic assessment of school fees, GCSE and A Level results, facilities, resources and values, this prestigious recognition places BMS among a very small number of independent schools nationwide to achieve the highest-level distinction. While strong academic outcomes undoubtedly contribute to this success, the true value of a BMS education is evident every day across our School community. Academic excellence is complemented by exceptional pastoral care, outstanding co-curricular opportunities and a culture where every student is known, valued and encouraged to thrive.
Welcome As I look back on another year at Bedford Modern School, I am reminded of what makes this community so special. BMS has long been recognised for its academic excellence, and this year’s outstanding GCSE and A Level results are another reflection of that proud tradition with 26% of all GCSE examinations awarded the highest grade of Grade 9, 70% awarded at Grades 9-7, and an incredible 84% of A Level grades being awarded at A*-B. These results reflect a culture where learning is valued, curiosity is encouraged and students are inspired to aim high. Here, excellence is never pursued alone; it is built together through ambition, character and community. Yet the BMS story is about much more than results. Our story is found in the performances that build confidence, the sporting successes that develop resilience, the expeditions that broaden horizons and the leadership opportunities that help students discover strengths they never knew they possessed. It is found in the friendships, the teamwork, the perseverance and the countless moments when students step beyond their comfort zones and achieve more than they thought possible. That spirit runs through everything we do. It creates a culture where students thrive because they feel known, supported and encouraged to make the most of every opportunity available to them.
David Payne Headmaster
The pages that follow capture just a snapshot of life at BMS over the past year. Together, they tell the story of a School where academic excellence sits alongside ambition, creativity, character and belonging; a School where students flourish not only because of what they achieve, but because of the community they are part of. Above all, this review celebrates our students and another year of ‘Excelling Together’.

in law, the relationship between the media and the judiciary, and the dynamic between the Supreme Court and the Government. Lady Rose’s openness and depth of knowledge offered students a rare glimpse into the workings of the highest court in the land, sparking much discussion and reflection.
Supporting Success Through Shared Experience
One of the highlights of the year has been our peer mentoring programme, which has provided invaluable support for Year 11 students as they prepared for their GCSEs. This is a testament to the dedication of our incredible Year 12 mentors, who have volunteered their time, experience, and encouragement to support their younger peers through the GCSE preparation period. Their commitment has helped to build confidence, strengthen revision routines, and create meaningful connections grounded in empathy and shared experience. The annual programme showcases the very best of the BMS community. Our school values – confidence, kindness, respect, integrity, resilience, ambition and responsibility – are lived out each week as mentors guide, listen, and inspire, and as mentees embrace the opportunity to learn from those who have recently stood where they stand now.
BMS Students Triumph in Prestigious Mock Family Court Competition Six of our talented Year 12 students with a passion for Politics and Law took part in the Sir Gavyn Arthur Mock Family Court competition – and came away as winners! The team showcased exceptional skill and confidence as they argued three complex family law cases against other local schools. Their ability to think critically, present compelling arguments, and work collaboratively was truly impressive. This success reflects not only their hard work and dedication but also the uplifting environment and opportunities provided at BMS, which empower students to explore their interests and develop realworld skills beyond the classroom.

Success Through the Power of Public
Speaking
Our students have enjoyed regular success at the English-Speaking Union (ESU) Public Speaking Competition, competing in multiple finals (regional and national) over the past academic year. In November, Year 12 student Eniife reached the national final of the ESU Sixth Form Public Speaking Competition after successfully progressing through two challenging rounds. Her speech explored the importance of sustainable architecture and how innovative design can help create a greener future. Reflecting on her achievement, Eniife praised the support she received at BMS, which helped her research and develop a presentation on a subject she is passionate about. In the 2026 cycle, a talented Year 11 team enjoyed an impressive run in the ESU Churchill Public Speaking Competition. After winning their second-round contest in February 2026, hosted at BMS, they progressed to the regional finals in March. Competing against leading schools from across the region, the trio demonstrated exceptional confidence, poise and communication skills, earning high praise from the judges for their performances. These achievements highlight the strength of public speaking at BMS and the enthusiasm, dedication and talent of our students across all year groups.

Students Embrace German Week at BMS In January we had a fantastic week celebrating all things Deutsch at BMS. Our students threw themselves into a range of activities, from German taster lessons and a German themed menu in the refectory to a lunchtime film club where they enjoyed watching Heidi together. We also put everyone’s knowledge to the test with a fun and competitive German quiz. One of the real highlights came during assembly, where a talented student performed a beautiful piece by Bach, adding a wonderful musical touch to the week.
Bedford Modern School Students Win FIRST® LEGO®
League Regional Final
The BMS team achieved an impressive victory, winning the regional finals of the FIRST LEGO League Challenge at the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). This year’s competition centred around the ‘UNEARTHED’ theme, which explores archaeology and the ways technology helps us uncover insights into how past generations lived, learned and celebrated. Alongside their research, students designed, built and
programmed a LEGO robot to complete a series of technical missions on the challenge mat. The tasks demanded precise engineering, thoughtful coding and seamless teamwork – skills our students demonstrated to an exceptional standard. The BMS team impressed judges across all areas of the competition, ultimately securing first place overall and earning the opportunity to represent the region at the national level.

Students also curated a memorable arts showcase, celebrating Black voices, artists and stories through spoken word, music and creative performances. The event highlighted the creativity, resilience and achievements of Black communities, while encouraging reflection, learning and discussion.
Sixth Form students from Bedford Modern School visit residents at Dorothea Court each week, creating meaningful friendships across generations. Through games, music and conversation, residents and students share stories, learn from one another and build lasting connections. Residents say the visits bring energy, companionship and a link to the wider world, while students gain valuable life lessons, empathy and perspective. Housing Scheme Manager Ruth Broomhall describes the sessions as “a highlight of the week”, demonstrating the positive impact of bringing younger and older generations together.
We are incredibly proud of the passion, leadership and talent our students demonstrated, creating experiences that educated, inspired and brought our community together in celebration of diversity, identity and culture.

Stepping Together:
A Celebration of Community and Confidence One of the year’s standout community moments saw the Gallery filled with energy, laughter and the vibrant rhythms of salsa. Led by our Colombian Language Assistant, the open session welcomed students and staff alike to learn new steps, build confidence and explore Latin culture together. What made the event so special was the atmosphere: with a huge turnout, everyone embraced the challenge, encouraged one another and stepped outside their comfort zones. It was a wonderful example of our inclusive community spirit, where people are willing to give things a go, support each other and share in the fun.
Student Leaders Participate in Year-Long Equality
Ambassador Programme
30 students from across Years 7-12 took part in a year-long initiative empowering them to lead change across the school, promoting equality and challenging discrimination through training, peer advocacy, and student-led campaigns. Our ambassadors learned to lead initiatives around awareness events like Anti-Bullying Week, LGBTQ+ History Month, and International Women’s Day, act as peer advocates and role models, and collaborate with staff to promote student voice across the school. The ambassador position was a role these students applied for and earned through their passion and commitment to making a difference. We’re incredibly proud of our young leaders and excited to see the impact they’ll continue to make in the future. Community

This fantastic local event brings together young musicians from across Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes, giving them the opportunity to perform on a real stage in an established venue. With 12 bands each performing two songs, the standard was exceptionally high, with every group showcasing both musical talent and impressive stage presence. Events like these play a vital role in helping young musicians build confidence, develop their performance skills and connect with fellow artists from across the region. We are incredibly proud of Edith Dog for their achievement and for representing the School so brilliantly.

Digging into Discovery: Rocks and
Soils Day
Our students enjoyed an action-packed Rocks and Soils Day, exploring the wonders beneath our feet. They learned about igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, classified real rock samples, and tested their permeability. Their learning took a dramatic turn as they studied the destruction of Boscastle, investigating how powerful natural forces can be. Inspired by this, the children designed and built their own river defences, putting their engineering ideas to the test to protect a model village from flooding. In the afternoon, hands-on activities brought learning to life as children created fossils, modelled sedimentary and metamorphic rock formation, and observed erosion using effervescing tablets.
