ESQUIRES ‘OWN OUR VENUES’
Invest in the future of Esquires
Bedford’s legendary award-winning music venue could secure its future as part of a groundbreaking community ownership projectand we are all at the heart of its success.
Esquires, run by Gareth and Louisa Barber, is among seven iconic grassroots music venues (GMVs) across the UK that have been included in the Music Venue Trust’s (MVT) ‘Own Our Venues’ project.
The aim of Music Venue Properties (MVP) is to provide long-term stability to venues like Esquires that are vital for fostering local talent and providing cultural value to our town.
Following the success of its first campaign in 2023, which raised £2.88 million and secured the future of venues including The Snug in Atherton and The Ferret in Preston, MVP is once again calling on music lovers and local communities to protect vital cultural spaces.
MVP has announced that it plans to acquire a further seven venues - including Esquires - through a second community share offer, which closes on 31 July 2025.
Whether you’re a dedicated music fan or an ethical investor, you can buy community shares in MVP’s Charitable Community
Benefit Society from just £100 ( £50 for under 25s), with options up to £100,000 and receive a 4% APR on your investment.
Describing Esquires, Chris Sherington of MVT, said: “It is one of the figurehead venues across the UK and it would be wonderful to secure it for the future. It gives people pride in place, so securing these places is key for communities.”
Cultural lease
The ‘cultural lease’ provides long-term security by offering stability that typical commercial leases, averaging just 18 months, cannot.
These leases ensure fair, sustainable rent, annual contributions toward essential maintenance, and ongoing support in areas such as financial sustainability and operational best practice.
Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, Esquires in Bedford is one of the UK’s most cherished grassroots music venues, and has played a pivotal role in launching local talents like Tom Grennan, Don Broco, and Alfie Templeman and recently won the Bedford Independent’s Everyday Heroes award for Raising the Profile of the Borough.
Gareth Barber, the director of Esquires, told the Bedford Clanger:
“This isn’t a cry for help, we’ve still got five years on our lease, but this is securing the future of Esquires beyond that five years and for future generations.
“Our landlord has decided to retire, and we are unable to extend the lease. The reality is that the venue sits on prime development land any prospective buyer will undoubtedly want to do the unthinkable.
“Without being part of Own Our Venues, there is no feasible way of being able to raise enough money to keep the venue for the town, which would rip the heart out of the community.
“With MVP behind us we can continue to grow, and there’s no reason why my successor shouldn’t be here in 35 years celebrating Esquires’ 70th anniversary.”
More information and other supporting documents about the project are available on the Music Venue Properties website musicvenueproperties.com.

THE HIGGINS BEDFORD
Edward Bawden Printmaker: new exhibition at The Higgins Bedford
From 24 May | Free entry
A new exhibition celebrating the extraordinary printmaking legacy of Edward Bawden, one of England’s most revered artists and printmakers, has opened at the Higgins Bedford, home to the Edward Bawden Archive.
Edward Bawden (1903–1989) was renowned for his mastery of linocut printmaking, a ‘humble’ medium he transformed into a sophisticated art form. This exhibition offers a rare glimpse into his skill and creative process through a selection of prints from the archive he generously donated to Bedford Borough in the
1980s, alongside newly acquired lino blocks gifted by his family that have never been publicly displayed before.
The Higgins Bedford houses over a thousand pieces from Bawden’s diverse body of work, including prints, watercolours, ceramics, murals, posters, and book illustrations. Bawden himself expressed his wish for his life’s work to remain together in Bedford, stating, “I must say I should feel immensely happy if I could be allowed to leave my remains to Bedford.”
The exhibition is free to enter and runs until 26 April.

THE QUARRY THEATRE
From sacred space to centre stage: A decade of The Quarry Theatre at St Luke’s
Ten years ago, a quiet transformation took place in Bedford School. Where once stood a 19th-century Moravian church and its adjoining 18th-century Minister’s House, a new kind of sanctuary emerged — one not of worship, but of creativity, community, education and performance. The Quarry Theatre at St Luke’s opened its doors in 2015, breathing new life into a Grade II listed building and establishing itself as a brand-new theatre for Bedford School, as well as cornerstone of Bedford town’s cultural landscape.
As we celebrate its 10th anniversary, The Quarry Theatre stands not only as a triumph of architectural preservation and innovation, but as a vibrant hub for artistic expression — bridging the historic with the contemporary, and Bedford School with the wider community.
From the outset, the theatre was designed with education at its heart. Every detail was crafted to support learning for Bedford School boys - not just for budding actors, but for aspiring directors, set designers, lighting technicians and stage managers. A specially designed overhead grid allows boys to safely crawl across and rig lighting, avoiding the need for traditional ladders and enabling them to learn professional techniques in a safe environment. Backstage areas are fully accessible and functional, giving boys the opportunity to explore all aspects of theatre production.
During the school day, the theatre is alive with activity. Lessons take place daily for boys aged 7 to 18, offering them a chance
to develop not only their creative talents but also essential life skills - teamwork, communication and problem-solving while also building their confidence. Whether they’re performing under the spotlight or working behind the scenes, boys are immersed in an environment that encourages curiosity and self-expression.
The theatre’s very name honours the Quarry family, proud former pupils of Bedford School and long-time members of the St Luke’s congregation. Their connection to the building runs deep; Gareth Quarry’s father once played the organ when it stood as a church (the organ itself remains on the far back wall of the centre stage to this day), his parents were married there and Gareth himself was christened within its walls. The family’s generous support helped transform this sacred space into a lively cultural landmark, ensuring that its legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
Equally instrumental was Brian Saville, another Old Bedfordian, whose generous bequest in his will provided vital funding for the theatre’s development. His gift, alongside Gareth Quarry’s helped ensure that future generations of pupils and Bedfordians alike would have access to a space that inspires, educates and entertains.
Today, The Quarry Theatre is a cornerstone of Bedford’s cultural life. It hosts a diverse programme of public performances — from drama and music to comedy and film — while offering Bedford School pupils a dynamic learning environment where creativity is nurtured, confidence is built, and professional-level productions come to life.
It is a place where personal history meets public purpose, and where the generosity of the past continues to shape the future.
A decade of drama: Key moments in The Quarry Theatre’s journey
A vision takes shape
Planning permission is granted to transform the Grade II listed St Luke’s Church — originally consecrated in 1865 — into a state-of-the-art theatre for Bedford School
26 June 2015: Curtain up
The Quarry Theatre officially opens its doors. Named after a school benefactor, the venue blends historic architecture with modern design, featuring a 286seat galleried courtyard theatre and a 60-seat studio space in the former Minister’s House.
A cultural beacon emerges
The theatre quickly becomes a hub for both school and community productions, hosting everything from Shakespeare to pupil-devised pieces, and welcoming touring acts, comedians and musicians.
2020: Lights dimmed, but not out Like venues across the UK, The Quarry Theatre faces temporary closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it adapts with streamed performances and socially distanced events, keeping the spirit of theatre alive.
For many former pupils of Bedford School, the theatre remains a deeply formative space:
“If it wasn’t for Bedford School, I don’t think I would’ve become an actor.”
— Old Bedfordian Jonno Davies, who portrayed Robbie Williams in the 2024 biopic Better Man.
“Doing drama at Bedford gave me confidence, discipline and respect that has been invaluable in the workplace.”
— Old Bedfordian and Drama Scholar, Louis Cooke, Apprentice Auctioneer at Christie’s Auction House.

Classical music: Bedford Choral Society Saturday, 24 June
Michael Rose’s setting of six of William Blake’s ‘Songs of Innocence and Experience’ encapsulates the spirit of this programme performed at Bedford’s Corn Exchange.
Well known to Bedfordshire audiences for more than half a century as a conductor, composer and champion of youth music, Rose’s piece teams well with the youthful Gregory May’s new work as the latter embarks on a career in the field of performance and composition. Both pieces were commissioned by Bedford Choral Society, Rose’s in 2004 and May’s in 2024. Both use literary texts and May also draws from Blake in parts. To complete this English trio, Handel, a naturalised Englishman, composed the joyful ‘The King Shall Rejoice’ as one of his four coronation anthems for George II.

REAL COFFEE
Real Coffee, real good
Bedford’s High Street is going through a bit of a revival right now, and Real Coffee is one of the places leading the charge. Sitting proudly where Pizza Hut once was, and later Coffee Republic, with a stint as the BedPop HQ in between, it’s taken a prime spot at the top of the Arcade and turned it into something genuinely exciting again.
People love to moan when yet another coffee shop opens, but they’re all always busy, so clearly, they’re doing something right, and it’s another empty shop filled, another reason to come into town.
And Real Coffee is doing plenty right. This independent café doesn’t just serve up one of the best flat whites I’ve had in ages; it’s also quickly becoming a go-to spot for locals who love great coffee, good food, and a strong sense of community.
Let’s start with the coffee. Real Coffee uses a Monmouth blend, a punchy mix of beans from Guatemala, Colombia, and Brazil, and they serve it just how I like it: strong, full of flavour, and without a hint of bitterness. Every cup is made with a double shot as standard (unless you ask otherwise), which gives your latte, flat white or cappuccino a solid backbone without needing sugar to smooth it out.
If dairy’s not your thing, oat and coconut milks are available. They work beautifully with the blend, especially in their ever-popular lattes, which they tell me are the go-to order for most regulars.
There’s a tempting array of fresh pastries to go with your brew. Croissants, pain au chocolat, and cinnamon rolls – plus an
impressive selection of cakes from local Bedford bakers, No Bakes Like Home. The lemon drizzle is light and zesty, the red velvet rich and moreish, and the exclusive skull cookies? A cheeky nod to their Real Bedford FC connection. Naturally, a must-have choice for many.
And if you’re in the mood for something savoury, the sandwiches here are the real deal. Made fresh daily using local ingredients and sourdough bread, they’re simple but packed with flavour. The Parma ham and cheese toastie is golden and melty, with that satisfying crunch when someone cares enough to do it properly. They’ll toast or not toast to your liking, on the spot, but either way, it’s a solid lunch you won’t regret.
What I love about Bedford’s independent shops is that they all do something to help give back, and Real Coffee is no exception. Registered with Too Good To Go, their leftovers get snapped up at a cut-price instead of being binned, a small detail that speaks volumes about the values behind the business.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, yes, you can pay in Bitcoin. What you might not have thought of is that they’re also fully licensed, so don’t be surprised if you hear about exclusive evening events popping up in the future.
Open seven days a week and pouring proper coffee from 9 a.m., Real Coffee is more than just a pitstop; it’s part of Bedford’s identity now. Pop in, order your favourite, and enjoy the buzz.
Real Coffee is at 67 High Street, Bedford MK40 1NE Open Monday–Saturday: 9am–5pm / Sunday: 9:30am–4pm

This year, The 2 Minute Foundation will be bringing their roadshow to the town to coincide with World Ocean Day on Sunday, 8 June, and while Bedford couldn’t be more land-locked, it serves as a reminder that our oceans and seas begin with our inland waterways, such as the River Great Ouse. More details of workshops and activities will be announced soon. For more information, visit greatbiggreenweek.com/cwalk/ great_big_green_week_bedford

Cathy and Marcus Wright
Occupation:
Co-owners of The Cellar Bar Bedford, Don’t Get Locked In Escape rooms and Venture Games, Rage Room and Axe Throwing.
Born here or blow in?
Blown in five years ago. Heard that “there wasn’t much to do in Bedford”, so decided to give the people of Bedford something to do by creating three hospitality businesses.
Best breakfast in Bedford?
The Longholme does a delicious breakfast with a view
Best boozer?
Well, we’re a bit biased, but our customers also tell us, they only come into Bedford town centre to come to us, so we’ll take that!
Best coffee or cuppa?
Has to be Coffee with Art, they do a great flat white and latte
Best gig you’ve seen in Bedford?
Another difficult one for us as we only put amazing performers on at The Cellar Bar, so why would we go anywhere else :). We genuinely have brilliant nights listening to live music, from some of the best local performers in the area.
Ever read John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress?
No, but it’s next on the list, downloaded and ready to go.
Ever eaten a Bedfordshire Clanger?
Yes
An off-the-beaten-track gem that everyone should know about?
Habisons Everyday Essential shop near the bus station.
When we need things quickly for Don’t Get Locked In or Venture Games (both near the bus station just like Habisons), this shop has been a real godsend to us. They have pretty much everything you can think of.
Best Bedfordian?
Has to be Mat Roberts, Bedford musical royalty. Enough said.
Three words that best sum up Bedford? Creative; Diverse; Resilient
