Corporation News The Corporation has commenced their Spring term meetings. They will look at the Strategic Planning process for 2021-2026 at their Development Day on 28 February 2019 and will welcome David Hughes, the Chief Executive of AOC, who will present the national picture in the sector. This is in addition to three of the governors representing the College at a reception held at the Houses of Parliament in January.

of new governors and they are working closely with the marketing and business development departments to raise awareness of the roles and the development opportunities for individuals who join. Leading on research

The College now enjoys a national reputation for the quality and volume of its research in further education.

Sam Jones in particular has led on this and has helped facilitate the national Reimagine FE Conference in Birmingham last year. The papers from the conference have only just been published and this is the output from the group Sam helped lead. It will be of interest to many of you I’m sure. You will read elsewhere about the bolt tightening ceremony for our new Zoological Centre at Shuttleworth. It comes complete with a biome made by the people that gave you the Eden Project in Cornwall, so the amazon rain forest is coming to Old Warden. It is a really special project and there aren’t many general management jobs that create these sorts of health and safety hazards!

Data overload

As if we don’t have enough to do, we recently received short notice of a student data audit during half term. Sadly this unfairly disrupted the holiday plans of some of our staff, but all data requested was provided despite the short notice. I am grateful to all those who put in the effort to make the visit go smoothly.

Principal on tour

In order to better understand any barriers to us achieving our strategic objectives, particularly in respect of the curriculum and staffing levels (as discussed at our recent whole college meetings), I am meeting some staff teams. I have already had excellent meetings with the vocational teaching team at The Bedford Sixth Form, and with the arts staff at Tresham, with many more planned over the next month or so.

ILT IN THE CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHT ON TedEd I have written a bit about TedEd before, but this month, I wanted to do a spotlight on this great resource. The tagline to TedEd, ‘Lessons worth sharing’ is adopted from its parent site, ted.com (‘Ideas worth sharing’), which is simply one of the best websites on the net.

TED, which stands to Technology, Entertainment and Design is a global conference held once a year (although a large number of smaller and local events called TEDx have popped up all over the world) and videos from the talks at this conference are posted on the website. You can watch talks from Bill Gates talking about malaria or teacher appraisals or Ken Robinson talking about the impact schools have on creativity. There are a number of very good talks about education, but also on nearly any topic that you might be interested in, from procrastination to what happens when you respond to spam emails. TED is a great resource for the classroom, as well as your own personal interest and development. There are a lot of ideas worth sharing, and there is no better way to get in touch with your inner geek.

It is so easy to get off topic when talking about TED, but my focus here was supposed to be TedEd, the educational tool that has come out of a TED funded project. The idea of TedEd is fairly simply, TED animators work with educators to illustrate lessons and explanations or mini lessons around key or simply interesting topics and post them on the site for teachers to build flipped lessons around. These lessons can be shared or made private and shared with just your class. There are already over 300,000 lessons on the site that you can take and flip, which means you can copy it into your account and change the questions or discussion to suit your needs.

What I love about TedEd is that it follows a standard 3-part lesson in a flipped format, with an introduction section, a ‘watch’ section and then review through a quiz (multiple choice or open ended questions) or a discussion all followed by an ‘and finally section, which I typically use to ask learners to bring something to the next lesson or to do some extension work. TedEd lessons are really straight forward to build and can easily be shared with learners in

Be sure to look for content already on the site before you go building your own, ‘good teaching is good stealing.’ If you can’t find anything that you want to use on TedEd, don’t panic, you can also build a lesson around any video on YouTube, and you can search from the lesson building tool to find and choose the video you want.

What makes TedEd particularly useful for the classroom is that you can go into your account and review student work and responses or simply to see who has completed your lesson. It is also a great community of teachers from around the world creating content, which you can freely use, so if you are looking for something quick and easy, this is your solution.

Whether you are trying a flipped lesson for the first time or you’re looking to use the tool in a computer suite so learners can work at their own pace, TedEd is the perfect tool. There is content for every subject and if you struggle to find something you can use, you can do what I have often done and just post your own video on YouTube and build a lesson around that.

NEWS FROM THE BEDFORD COLLEGE GROUP £10M UPGRADE AT THE WELLINGBOROUGH CAMPUS STARTING THIS MONTH The long awaited refurbishment of the Church Street campus will revive the existing buildings to encourage more students to study at the campus and will see more staff based in the town centre again.

Following the merger in the summer of 2017 the Group put a case to two powerful funding bodies to gain £7.5 Million funding for the premises via a SEMLEP (South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership) grant.

The grant, together with funding from the colleges own resources, now enables us to develop the campus to offer a wider range of courses within the refurbished tower block. Following extensive research within the area, courses being introduced to the site from September 2020 in addition to the Motor Vehicle courses will include: • Plumbing • Wood Occupations • Education & Training PTLLS • Access to HE • ESOL • Basic Skills • Computing

• Electrical Installation • Health and Social Care • Counselling • Early Years • Prince’s Trust • AAT • Business and Professional Training

The developments to the Tresham campus will ensure that the Group will keep a much wanted further education facility in Wellingborough and enable school leavers in the town and surrounding areas to progress nearer to home, as well as offering a variety of part time courses for adults.

The Motor Vehicle team will remain within the workshops throughout the build process alongside a number of courses being taught from Croyland Hall to maintain a presence in the town over the next academic year.

The project is being supported by Wellingborough Borough Council who are seeing the re-development of the site as a way to assist in the future vitality of the town centre and encourage students and staff to access other services in the town.

NEWS FROM THE BEDFORD COLLEGE GROUP ZOOLOGICAL EDUCATION CENTRE TAKES SHAPE Students, staff and special guests attended a special ceremony to celebrate the work that has already been completed for the brand new ÂŁ3.65m Zoological Education Centre (ZEC) on the Shuttleworth site.

Guest of honour, Owen Croft, General Manager at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Dunstable, was joined by student ambassadors, CEO and Principal Ian Pryce CBE, Centre Curator Carl Groombridge and College Governor, Alasdair Simmons to tighten one of the structural bolts for the steel frame that is quickly becoming a significant facility based at the campus on the Old Warden Estate near Biggleswade.

Students will be able to learn about even more species once the new centre opens which has been managed by Carl Groombridge and his team. They have worked alongside the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) to create an environment where animal welfare is paramount.

The highly specialised ZEC will allow students to prepare for specialist careers at prestigious zoos and conservation centres after having the opportunity to care for a range of animals from the Malaysian Jungle Nymph to Mississippi alligators which will have their own pool!

Staff and students are being invited to get involved in supporting the new ZEC through buying a leaf for a feature tree that will be placed within the UKs first biome within a college.

Leaves will cost ÂŁ100 and can be purchased as individuals, families, businesses or as part of teams or community groups.

NEWS FROM THE BEDFORD COLLEGE GROUP STUDENTS HAVE DESIGNS ON TOP PRIZE Graphic Design students at the Kettering campus are taking part in a national competition to help promote their own course to other prospective students.

Display Wizard based in Preston, Manchester have launched a competition to test the skills of graphic design students across the UK.

The HNC Graphic Design students at Tresham are hoping to take the top spot to win £500 and have their design produced on a giant stand to display at the college.

Graphics Design Lecturer, Maria Delves said: “It is great experience for our students to work on a real brief and deadline like this. They must incorporate

the job prospects and career benefits of their course into the design and make it appeal to potential new students at the college.”

Students must submit their designs by 1st May. Keep an eye on social media and in future issues of CONNECT for their progress.

GED TO THE RESCUE A Shuttleworth student has been praised for using his initiative and stepping up to offer First Aid when a huge fire broke out in an old building at a hospital site in Kimbolton Road, Bedford last month.

Gerald (Ged) Hargreave Mawson, who is a St John Ambulance Cadet saw the fire from his home and rushed to put his training into action standing alongside scores of firefighters and other emergency response staff.

The blaze that took place in January , continued for hours and Ged received praise from the St John Ambulance organisation for showing initiative by getting involved:

“Prior to the arrival of the East of England Ambulance Service, Ged was able to offer cover if first aid had been needed,” said an official letter and: “the dedication and support that he showed in supporting the emergency services went above and beyond what was expected of him.”

Ged is a first year Level 3 Outdoor Advanced Extended Diploma student at Shuttleworth where he is learning coaching and leadership skills which he hopes will stand him in good stead for a job in First Aid training and instructing outdoor activities in a few years’ time.

“I love it here at Shuttleworth and was glad to be of service at the emergency incident,” said Ged, aged 16.

Staff are extremely proud of his efforts and have commended his quick thinking attitude to offer his first aid skills where they may have been needed.

NEWS FROM THE BEDFORD COLLEGE GROUP NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR CHAMPION PEAR TREE Saplings of the champion Cubbington Wild Pear tree which is being removed for HS2, will ensure that it is going to survive in and around Cubbington village for future generations to admire.

Grafts of the original tree, voted English Tree of the Year in 2015, were made by Shuttleworth lecturer Paul Labous, and his horticultural students. In 2017 Cubbington Action Group against HS2 reported that a single graft had been successful. Further attempts were carried out at the College, and in January 2019 a number of dormant saplings were returned to Cubbington.

Saplings are currently being planted or distributed locally.

coordinating the operation said “Our offers of a pear sapling to community groups and sites have been met with great enthusiasm.

The first priority is to plant in Cubbington village, and saplings will find a home in St Mary’s churchyard and the grounds of our two primary schools, Cubbington CE School and Our Lady and St Teresa’s School. Later, after growing on, others will be planted in Cubbington’s recreation grounds.”

Cubbington Action Group, and pupils Isaac, Sam, Megan and Matilda. The girls had helped to plant the tree two weeks prior, one commenting “it’s nice we can keep the pear tree alive”.

GRAPHICS GATHERING 2019 Students from The Bedford Sixth Form have entered the Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum’s Graphic Gathering competition again this year. This is an annual competition in collaboration with TRAID, a charity working to stop clothes from being thrown away. The brief asked approximately 300 secondary school students to design artwork to wrap a TRAID clothes bank.

It is aimed that these designs will encourage and inspire the

public to utilise this important facility and encourage the local community to reuse and recycle the clothes they are no longer wearing by passing them on to TRAID. Out of all the entries, TBSF is delighted that their student, Ellie Scorer, a first year Graphics student was selected as the overall winner of the competition.

Thirteen shortlisted schools from around London took part and the overall presentation evening was held earlier this month. Shortlisted students were asked to pitch their work in front of a select panel and Ellie excelled with a fantastic presentation.

TRAID and the V&A are hoping to have a grand reveal and a temporary space to show the winning design before it is found a permanent home within London.

This is not a testimonial to a retired colour printer - but to the Handley Page Jetstream (HP-137) passenger jet which was shoe-horned into the Brundtland workshop When the aeronautical Engineering course was discontinued, the plane became surplus to requirements, and several options were considered including disposal for scrap.

Dina, who runs two different collections – A Mix of Style which she sells on ASOS marketplace and Epitome jewellery which she sells on SilkFred.

Students used their photographic make-up skills to apply two different designs on their models to match the target audiences and website

requirements for the two online retailers.

NEWS FROM THE BEDFORD COLLEGE GROUP UNIFORMED PUBLIC SERVICES GET OUT AND ABOUT RAF BRIZE As part of an ever evolving and increasingly engaging curriculum our Level 3, 1st Year Uniformed Public Services (UPS) learners have had the opportunity to get involved in visits to RAF Brize Norton, Climbing Centres, Magistrates Courts and a week-long expedition to the Outward Bound centre in the Lake District.

All of the visits have been designed to give learners an insight into the day to day running of an active Public Service environment as well as the roles and responsibilities or service personnel within these workplaces.

CLIMBING AND CAVING As part of the Land and Water Unit, the group took part in a climbing and caving session at the Pinnacle centre in Northampton. For this unit, learners must demonstrate physical skills as well as show a detailed understanding of legislation and health and safety. The expert and professional guidance and tutoring from the staff at

the centre has ensured that our learners are in the best possible place to achieve high marks. Learners were inspired by the concise and refined health and safety briefs and also enjoyed the practical sessions of caving, rock climbing and bouldering. The centre is an excellent resource for learners whilst completing their unit.

LAKE DISTRICT In addition to their other trips, the group of 1st year learners attended a week-long expedition to the Outward Bound centre in the Lake District. The trip was designed to meet criteria from various units (Physical Preparation, Leadership & Teamwork, Land & Water) and tested learners in ways many young adults are not accustomed to. The group took part in activities such as cliff jumping, gorge walking and extended navigation, culminating in a 24 hour expedition in the snowy lakes mountains.

The group visited RAF Brize Norton to help learners gain an understanding of the content delivered as part of their Discipline and Leadership & Teamwork units which is particularly pertinent as some of our level 3 learners intend to pursue careers in the RAF. The visit was a perfect chance for those to validate their interests and further their understanding of what makes serving RAF personnel successful. As part of the visit, learners enjoyed guided tours and expert talks on equipment, facilities, equipment and tasks. The team were very grateful to the RAF for their

The arduous environments and situations enable learners to appreciate the importance of teamwork and professionalism.

The week was an eye opener to learners aspiring to work in the UPS sector, especially those wishing to pursue careers in the Armed Forces. The value of the learning that took place throughout the expedition, both intrinsic and extrinsic, is immeasurable, and helps to shape young adults in ways that day to day student life at college cant.

NEWS FROM THE BEDFORD COLLEGE GROUP COURT FOR THE DAY To ensure the UPS programme continues to be engaging and rewarding for learners throughout the course, second year UPS learners visited Luton Magistrate’s Court for three consecutive Mondays in January and February. Learners had the opportunity to observe multiple cases which will no doubt bolster their comprehension of law, legal application and the processes involved with democratic judicial systems and decision making. This visit was designed to help learners link the content of various units (Law

+ Legal, Media, Crime) to real life situations. During this process, learners have been able to experience a plethora of UPS related vocations in real time, allowing them to further their understanding of unit based knowledge whilst developing an insight into what kinds of occupations learners can progress to.

Following the success of these visits, the team plan to continue to broaden and vary the UPS curriculum to provide an engaging and educationally fulfilling course for future learners.

Hi, I’m Phoebe, a first year Sixth Form student with a passion for business especially marketing. I am currently studying economics, maths and business but I’ve always had an interest in the more creative side of business and that’s where marketing comes in. Learners found out more about the puppy training and met some too!

Whipsnade Zoo 16 students from Level 1 and Level 2, Health and Social Care and Childcare at Wellingborough went on a trip to Whipsnade Zoo earlier this month. The visit allowed the groups to explore new knowledge of animals, how health and safety works and see how the Zoo provides an inclusive environment for people of all ages

The theme this year ‘Balance for Better’ aims to inspire for a more genderbalanced world. Events are held throughout the world to celebrate women’s achievements. Gender equality is about everyone and gender equality initiatives should include men and women.

We all have a role to play in challenging sexist language and bullying, and gender stereotypes (for instance, “Man up, big boys don’t cry,” and “Stop acting like a little girl.”)

21ST - INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION

The theme is ‘Mitigating and countering rising nationalist populism and extreme supremacist ideologies’. Racist extremist movements are spreading in various parts of the world, fuelling racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance, often targeting migrants and refugees as well as people of African descent.

At the heart of hate crime is prejudice therefore it’s important to have understanding of different cultures, value different experiences and backgrounds, and challenge intolerance and unfair treatment on the grounds of ethnic differences.

WHAT DOES MY DEPARTMENT DO?

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK IN THE DEPARTMENT?

As Teaching Assistants we support learners across college with an identified learning difficulty and or disability in mainstream vocational areas within all levels.

We have a growing number of High Needs learners across college to support.

Our department can be very rewarding, challenging and varied in support, we all work independently and excellent as a team where we have regular opportunities to share good practice and ideas as a department.

WHERE ARE YOU BASED? TA’s are based across college with base rooms allocated in Bedford Ouse House and Shuttleworth Mansion House.

WHAT ROLES DOES EACH TEAM MEMBER HAVE? Each team member brings their own individual strengths and knowledge to the team to support learners across college with a wide range of learning needs and difficulties.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENTS DID THE TEAM ACCOMPLISH LAST YEAR? As a team we have effectively supported our learners on a wide range of vocational courses to effectively work towards retention and achievement and have been able to see our supported learner’s progress onto the next level.

ANY INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT YOUR DEPARTMENT? We are a Core team whom support learners across Bedford main site, Sixth Form, Kempston Plumbing, Motor Vehicle and Shuttleworth.
