CHRIS Study Programme: Sport Level 3 Destination: Football Academy Owner & Coach “My time at Bedford College gave me an insight into the many different facets of the sporting industry. Exploring different elements such as Bio-mechanics, Physiotherapy, Sport Psychology as well as many others, has enabled me to apply what I was taught to my current job on a daily basis. I knew I always wanted to work in sport but hadn’t identified a clear pathway. My Level 3 gave me the solid foundation and qualification I needed to enrol on the HND pathway that was the start of a career I was passionate about. This is when I began football coaching at grassroots level. I had some fantastic tutors at the college who really ignited my desire to improve, they helped me identify the path I was going to take in the sporting industry. The tutor’s enthusiasm is something that I draw upon today, when working to keep young minds ignited. After finishing my education, I started up my own sports coaching business which began in 2010 and still delivers School Sports provision across Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire today.”
SHOAIB Study Programme: Motor Vehicle Maintenance Level 3 Destination: MOT Tester “Once I had completed my course and it was time for me to leave College, I was able to gain experience working on cars in a local garage. From here I went on to finish up my MOT course and became a qualified MOT tester. Today I am working for BMW, one of the most respected dealerships around. I have worked extremely hard to get where I am today and owe a lot to my family and of course Bedford College. The tutors at the College brought the best out in me and supported me through my studies. Bedford College is equipped with tutors who really care about their students and this is definitely something that comes across in the teaching, as they want to give you every opportunity available to broaden your knowledge and become successful.”
FRANCESCA Study Programme: Art & Design Foundation Diploma (Pre-Degree) Advanced Level 3 and 3D Design BTEC HND Destination: Senior Jewellery Designer “After leaving school, I was unsure as to which creative path I wanted to explore and develop in. The option of studying for my foundation qualification at Bedford College meant I was not only able to study locally, but also explore a range of subjects and pathways that I had not yet considered whilst being at school. During my time on the Foundation Level 3 course, the tutors were able to oversee and understand my strengths and weaknesses. Along with the projects that we were set, I was able to see what areas of Art and Design I was drawn to. This close interaction between the tutors helped guide me onto the creative pathway of 3D design, which ultimately led me onto a higher education course, a HND in 3D design. Being able to explore this subject further resulted in me now working in the jewellery industry. The expertise of the tutors at Bedford College and their industry knowledge fueled my interest and passion in the field with the course giving me the opportunity to work with a range of different briefs, materials and fellow students. The Level 3 course allowed the perfect combination of individual learning and working alongside others, both tutors and students. Being a bespoke Jewellery Designer, I love being able to translate a client’s briefs into a reality. I see jewellery as miniature sculptures and forms of art, the importance the jewellery has to the wearer is equal to the design. Jewellery is something that everybody can relate to and understanding its function, communicating this into a design is something I find extremely rewarding.” Full-time Study Programme Guide

English & maths
English and maths Love them or hate them, English and maths are essential for work and education! Many employers complain that too many young people lack the literacy (English) and numeracy (maths) skills needed for jobs in today’s workplace. If you’re not yet ready for work, but want to continue in education, you’ll also find that entry onto higher level courses requires grades 9–4 or A*–C in GCSE English and maths. In short, they’re very important and we’ll help you get the grades you need.
Work experience Work experience is a key (and fun!) part of your full-time study programme at College. We have strong links with hundreds of employers in every industry area to ensure we find the best placement for you. Every student has a minimum of 20 hours per year of external work experience. Here’s a little peek at where some of our recent students have spent theirs: •3 D Applied Design students organised ‘Hey Clay’ workshops for the general public to attend •A rt & Design Students hosted cartoon workshops in conjunction with Bedford Library •E ngineering students undertook work experience projects with companies such as London Electronic, Cranfield Precision and Pressfab Engineering •F ine Art students organised an exhibition in The Arcade, Bedford for The Teenage Cancer Trust •H air & Beauty Students completed work experience with Centreparcs Woburn Aqua Sana Spa
“At the end of the day your success at College is down to you, and I like that. It’s a mature environment that makes you grow up a lot more than I think you would do by staying at school. We have everything we need here and it’s nice to have access to the industrial machines and the opportunities to use them. I’ve learnt so much so far and I’m really looking forward to going into my second year!”

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION If you are a mature student without the standard qualifications to enter higher education, these one year intensive courses are ideal for you.
If you complete one of our Access to Higher Education courses and use an Advanced Learner Loan to pay for your tuition fees, the Student Loans Company will write off the balance on the Advanced Learner Loan if you then go on to complete an undergraduate course.
Our Access courses build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to higher education in the subject area you’re interested in. They are recognised by universities across the UK and allow entry on to higher education courses in your chosen specialist area.
If you’re 18 years old you may apply and will need to have English Language and maths GCSE at grade 4/C or above, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications, before the start of the course and be subject to a successful interview.
You will gain a good introduction to your chosen subject, develop your study skills and increase your confidence and ability with this level of study. The course takes one year and, on completion, you will gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma. All pathways will include compulsory English and maths, as well as research skills units. You will also need to have good IT skills as all of your assignments will be carried out using either Word, Excel or PowerPoint. You can undertake IT Skills classes at our Learning Centre based on the High Street in Bedford.
Successful applicants will be in College for three days per week and will also have to undertake a relevant work placement for up to 150 hours (which is a requirement of some courses). A work placement officer may be able to support you in finding suitable places. You may also have to complete a successful DBS check. If you are successful you may qualify for a free place. Alternatively, we offer Level 2 and Level 3 courses that may be funded for 16-18 year olds.
If you are aged 19 or over, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. Alternatively, you can pay by instalments to help make the cost more affordable. Find out more about your payment options at: www.bedford.ac.uk/loans

Access to Higher Education
“I started this Access course two years after leaving sixth form. I’d had some time out and had intended to go back to sixth form, but decided I wanted to go to university and searched online for other options. I found that Access courses can get you to university in just one year if you don’t already have the grades you need. Coming to Bedford College was a really good decision. I’ve met so many great people and it’s getting me to where I want to be. I was quite a shy person growing up and found that I could connect with people through computing. I’m looking forward to going to the University of Westminster to study Computer Science at the end of the Access course and would love to have a career in either software development or game development.”

“I enjoy the Marketing units of the study programme because I’m good at presenting and getting my points across to people, as well as designing things. Another unit I’ve really liked is Exploring Business. It’s all about the external environments around business and what affects it. We’ve looked behind the scenes at old business scandals and what actually goes on inside!”

“When I was studying the Level 1 in Childcare here at College I wanted to become a Social Worker. However, now I have changed my mind and would like to be a Criminologist because I find it a fascinating area to study. There are aspects of criminology and mental health on this programme, so once I have completed the Level 3, I plan to apply to university to study Criminology and eventually work in a police department. My favourite part of the programme so far has been the Creative Therapies unit where we have worked on tasks such as making an object from playdoh and learning how to clearly describe it to someone who might be blind, or learning how to describe simple tasks to someone with dementia.”

Care & Childcare
“I would like to train to be a care assistant or support worker looking after older people, as I have spent time looking after my own grandparents, as well as children in my family. I’ve been given lots of opportunities through the College, including a Health & Care Assistant Apprenticeship, which I will start next year in a local care home. The highlight of the study programme for me has been the work on legislation and the Equality Act in Healthcare. It was interesting to study how people are treated and to learn about discrimination in the sector. I enjoy the written assignments that we have to do and my tutors are very nice and kind. They will always give any help you need. You feel a lot more responsible for your own learning at College, because it’s a more independent environment where you can develop your own interests. I’m really glad I chose to come here.”

“The highlight so far for me has been representing the College at the Skills Show in Birmingham. We were presenting demos on computer hardware, which tied in with the Hardware unit we were studying where a problem would be created within a computer and we’d have to fix it and put it back together. Problem solving was also a big part of my recent work experience placement with the trade union, Affinity. I spent three days taking an IT consulting approach to problems they were experiencing and coming up with solutions. The Computing department at Bedford College is excellent. The whole floor has been renovated, we have new equipment and people come from a long way away to study here. I’m definitely going to stay on for the HNC/HND and hopefully gain a BSc here at the College. I know the staff here and the software we use, and so I’ll be able to focus on my work without any change, plus financially it makes more sense to stay local.”

“When I decided I didn’t want to study at sixth form anymore, my journey at College began. I had just painted my own bedroom, so thought I would try studying a course in painting and decorating. I started studying at Bedford College on a full-time study programme and then, about a year in, a local company came into the College looking for an apprentice. My tutor asked me if I wanted to do it, and it’s been a really good decision.

What will I study? This study programme will give you a good understanding of the whole construction process, giving you the opportunity to study a large number of interlinked units to broaden your industry knowledge. The programme will cover a wide range of topics, including building surveying, mechanical and electrical services, building regulations and more.
I am now learning both on the job and at College, and I also received a £500 bursary from the Connolly Foundation to help with costs. I work for Coles Decor in Biggleswade on two week block release from College. I enjoy painting the most, especially stencilling work. All of my tutors are so helpful and they allow you to work how you want to work. It’s a pretty relaxed environment and, although I’m one of the only girls in the department, everyone is really easy to get along with. After the apprenticeship comes to an end I want to get into full-time employment to gain more experience before hopefully becoming a self-employed Painter & Decorator.”

Electrical Installation
“I’d been a stay at home dad for several years and was researching my options with regards to becoming a self-employed electrician. After speaking with a couple of established electrical contractors in Milton Keynes, it became clear that Bedford College was well respected by the trade. There are two main components to the course; theory and practical. While the course does consist of a significant amount of electrical related maths, I have found that Bedford College does provide the support needed to master the electrical theory and any maths involved; the tutors here are very experienced and know how to best assist the students to master the theory. The other main part of the course consists of practical experience in the College’s workshop. As someone who not only aims to become a self-employed electrician, but who also enjoys working with his hands, I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to actually practice the electrical installation work. Over the course of the year we have been taught everything from the basics of how to correctly strip and terminate cable through to installing steel conduit and testing our work using test instruments. Once I’ve successfully completed Level 2, I can enrol on to the Electrical Installation Level 3 course. Completing this course puts a student in a fantastic position to be employed in the trade as a trainee electrician, in order to get the work experience they need for final assessment to become fully qualified.”

“I wanted to study Engineering at College because it’s a subject that gives you an understanding of everything in the world around you. Being at College has made me want to learn more and I know I’m getting taught by the best. My tutors are experts in their fields and they set me extra-curricular tasks in programming, microcontrollers and circuit boards, which I like to get on with. I’ve had a work experience placement with a mechanical engineering company who make parts for planes, and we’ve been on a trip to Marshall Amps in Bletchley to look at their mass production methods for the amplifiers. I feel Electrical Engineering was a good path for me to pursue, as it’s quite a broad subject that will open up more opportunities than studying a more specific field might. The new Buchanan Centre for Engineering is fantastic with plenty of facilities in the labs; it’s an independent environment where you can choose what you want to focus on. For one of our projects we had to choose from three common world problems to solve. I chose a biometric fingerprint attendance system to be used in schools and colleges, which I built from scratch. I love the project management work here and would eventually like to be a project manager in Engineering. I already have a couple of university offers and hope to go on to do a Masters after my undergraduate degree.”

“Since leaving school I have studied for a degree in Floristry and completed a part-time Accounting course. I still love doing floristry, but unfortunately it was not providing consistent work; I needed something that would guarantee full-time work, and I love working with people, so I chose Barbering. I’m a very creative person, so I knew I could incorporate this into barbering. I came to Bedford College because it is local and has a good reputation. The Barbering programme was recommended to me and all I can say is I wish I had done it earlier! I love coming here every day and just don’t want it to end. My tutor has been a brilliant support and has flown me through the programme. I’ve had work experience with Jagged Edge Barbers where I helped on the till, with stock checks, gowning up and shampooing hair.”
