VARSITY HEAD COACH

Coach Workman is a 2000 graduate of Mossyrock High School and a 2006 graduate of Central Washington University. He began his career as the C-team boys coach at MSH before joining the Ellensburg High School boys basketball staff while attending CWU. After graduating from college, he returned to Mossyrock and coached the JV boys before becoming the head coach in 2010. Last season he came on as Head Coach for the Olympia Bears girls program. “I am very thankful for this opportunity with the Olympia girls basketball program, and I look forward to building not just winning teams, but a winning program that has high expectations on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.” When he’s not coaching, Coach Workman enjoys fishing and golfing.

Coach Bradley graduated from Mossyrock High School in 2011 and began his coaching in 2012. He was an assistant coach for the boys varsity for four years. He has also been an assistant coach the last four years for an AAU team based out of Chehalis. Coach Bradley has been Coach Workman’s assistant all eight years of his coaching. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Meghan, and his son, Jerrick. He also likes sports, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends.

Coach Gerrits is a proud graduate and employee of OHS. He has coached basketball at a variety of levels for 20 plus years and is grateful for the opportunity to work with the girls program this year for the first time.

He has two boys, Parker (15), Logan (12) and a supportive wife, Shelley.

Coach Sam is in her third year of coaching at Olympia High School. Sam enjoys being a part of the Oly Bear Basketball program and helping student athletes reach their full potential on and off the court. She has worked with kids K-12 on skill development and knowledge of the game. Basketball is a huge part of Sam’s life; when she’s not on the court you can find her spending time with her husband of four years and their three dogs.

C-TEAM COACH

Coach Balikov has been coaching basketball for 17 years. Since moving to the Olympia area in 2003, she has coached at Tumwater High School, Olympia High School and Washington Middle School. Coach Balikov enjoys working with student athletes and teaching basketball and teamwork. Outside of coaching, she works as a paraeducator at schools in the area, enjoys movies, hiking, getting together with friends and family, and filling out March Madness brackets.

What does Oly basketball mean to me: Basketball itself is an amazing game, not only does it pit two teams against each other, but it also tests the individual player. For me basketball has been my outlet, something dependable I can always understand and happily dedicate myself to. It’s one of the activities I’ve enjoyed the most in my high school experience. And that’s mostly because of the community around it. The girls and coaches all share a similar passion for the game and it’s just amazing to be a part of such a supporting program.

Olympia Basketball to me means unconditional friendships with a specific group of girls that I get to spend every day with. This group of girls have a special bond because of all our shared experiences; getting hyped in the locker room on game day, lifting weights, then hustling to practice, going to each other’s houses for team dinner, and every little moment in between.

College and career plans for the future : I hope to be attending a 4 year university. I haven’t made definite choices but I am excited to pursue my interest in history, the arts and literature.

Thank people: My family, my teammates and my coaches.

But I would like to specifically thank my dad. For waking up at the crack of dawn to take me to tournaments, Never letting me bring myself down, and helping me improve through the years. Thanks for being my # 1 fan.

Offer advice / words of encouragement for underclassmen: Accept the losses, they only make you stronger. Enjoy the wins, they’re a reminder of your hard work. Treasure your team, they’ll teach you communication and together you’ll experience comradery.

Fun fact/ funny story: At the Sumner gym the band is so loud you can’t hear the bench. Not knowing what else to do Coach started making up signals on the fly. My favorite was our play called “step”. Coach jumped up and down like a madman from the sideline. 10/ 10 best charades game I’ve ever played.

Family members: My mom Lisa, my Dad Eric, my sister Lauren (who I get to be on the same team with this year!), and my dog Paisley🐾

I plan on attending a University, majoring in Poli-Sci, and studying to become a Lawyer! I’m not quite sure where I’ll end up yet.

I want to thank my mom for sharing her love for basketball with me at an early age and cultivating the competitive fire within me; thank you for being my biggest fan. My dad for always being my other biggest fan and the all-knowledgeable stat man! My sister who I’ve competed and played with all my life...most importantly on our pop-a-shot! Lastly, my grandparents, Rog and Deborah who have become a staple at all my games despite living in Seattle. You’re all the best, much love!

To my younger gals: Play all the time with such an intense spirit that you can’t help but be noticed. Give it your all and go hard, but don’t forget to have fun and dance during practice! (Gerrits loves it) Fun Fact: I used to drink Sprite and eat AirHeads Rainbow Bites before on the bus to away games!

Family members: Crayne Horton (dad), Mary Sue Wilson (mom), Gaius and Connor (brothers), Joanna (little sister)

Family members: My parents are Ana and Franklin, and I got 3 older brothers, Kyle, Kristjann and Kristoffer. All whom graduated from Oly.

Olympia basketball means working every day to be the best athlete, leader, and person I can be. It means knowing I always have an awesome group of teammates and coaches to count on.

My future plans are to attend a university next fall, no idea which one!

I want to thank all the coaches who have helped make me into the player I am today, especially Bill Kallappa, Justin Parker, Deborah Graver, Linae Myhand, Derrick Pringle, Dranoel Hamilton, Jackie Robinson, Dustin Workman, and Ryan Gerrits. I also want to thank my mom and dad for supporting me in every possible way.

My advice to underclassmen is to just enjoy the opportunity to play basketball and have fun with your teammates.

A fun fact about me is I’ve grown potatoes since I was three years old.

Olympia basketball to me is having fun and getting hyped when you see your teammate get better, drawing in a foul for a free-throw, knocking down 3, etc.

College plans are undetermined for now, but I’d liked to go to WSU, do ROTC, and possibly major in veterinary studies.

I’m grateful to all our coaches in the program but I’m most appreciative of Coach Sam. Coach Sam and I have been together since I was a freshmen on her C-Team, and she’s been there for me every step of the way, in my journey from C-Team, JV, and now varsity. Plus, she tells me some funny jokes. Thank you, Sam. Advice I’d give to anyone is try to make other peoples’ day a little better just by being kind.

One time I was really curious about what instant coffee powder tasted like, just by itself. So I got a spoonful of it and ate it. The worst discovery of my life. So bitter. Totally dumb. Not worth it.
