You want fresh young skin? Well, everybody does -- even certain macho men who would never admit it. That's why billions of dollars are spent every year on skin care products, most of them wasted. But skin health depends on proper nourishment -- not on great advertising, big brand names or the world's most beautiful women serving as spokespersons. Here's how you can have fresh, young-looking skin. First, your living habits make a big difference. If you allow yourself to get sunburned a few times every summer, smoke, never get enough sleep and eat whatever's on the fast-food menu, it's almost impossible to have youthful, glowing skin for long. -- Sunburns are skin inflammation and damage. Inflammation is one of the greatest causes of aging skin and wrinkles. So give yourself some sunshine -- it's good for you -- but never, ever allow yourself to burn. (No more excuses, you hear?) -- Smoking -- even secondhand smoke -- causes wrinkles on your face and elsewhere. It narrows the blood vessels feeding your skin and damages both collagen and elastin, which give your skin strength and elasticity. -- Ever notice your red eyes with circles around them when you wake up without getting enough sleep? Is this a habit with you? Enough said! -- Healthy food is nutrition that keeps you healthy, and don't kid yourself, that includes skin health. If you know your food choices are terrible, you don't have to become an overnight martyr to healthy food. But try adding something good consistently, such as: A salad twice a week; pick up some vegetables and fruits that you like -- frozen is just as healthful as fresh -- and eat one a day. (Deep colors are a simple guide: deep green romaine lettuce and spinach leaves are much more nourishing than that pale iceberg lettuce that you see everywhere; red and green bell peppers and tomatoes are great; the deep colors of berries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, as well as plums, grapefruit and apples, say "Pick me.") Eat the ones you like and occasionally try something new. Good supplements are a big help.
A moderately priced vitamin-mineral package and a highly purified, concentrated fish oil capsule or two a day can be a bargain investment in the health of your skin and your whole body. Nourishment with skin care creams This industry is a minefield of ineffective products sold by great ads and beautiful women. I should know; I've bought my share of useless stuff that sounded great. But eventually I did the necessary, tedious research, and this is what I can tell you. Good nourishment CAN give your skin back its glow, its youthful softness and even, creamy color. But only the right ingredients can do that. They must be right up to date, proven in clinical trials with real people, and chosen for both effectiveness and an flawless safety record. I'll name just two: -- A seaweed extract called Phytessence Wakame has a unique ability to block a damaging enzyme in the skin that destroys hyaluronan, also called hyaluronic acid. It happens that hyaluronan is the "glue" that holds collagen and elastin into the wonderful soft, flexible but strong structure of healthy skin. Block the enzyme and you rebuild your youthful hyaluronan levels. -- Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant that prevents oxidation damage in your skin, another major cause of wrinkles. In skin care cream, it must be in very tiny particles to be absorbed. Look for it in a "nano-emulsion" of 5 percent CoQ10 and 10 percent natural Vitamin E, the combination that works best together. See my website for more on how to get the nourishment that gives you fresh young skin.
