Squaw Creek House is just minutes away from the ever beautiful Vail and Beaver Creek Mountains. Vail mountain opened to the public with one gondola and two chairlifts. Today, 31 lifts have the capacity to transport more than 60,000 skiers uphill per hour. Beaver Creek is known as North America's World Cup mountain. Vail was founded by Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton in 1962, at the base of Vail Pass, which was named after Charles Vail, designer of the highway that passed through the valley.

HISTORY OF VAIL

During World War II, Seibert joined the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division which trained at Camp Hale, 14 miles south of Vail between Red Cliff and Leadville. During the training Seibert and Eaton became familiar with the surrounding terrain, areas of which would become resorts in later decades. They discovered a peak that believed to be well -located and with good snow, calling it No -name Mountain, which later became Vail. Construction of the resort began in 1962 in the uninhabited valley. It opened six months later on December 15th. There were three lifts: one gondola that ran from the base of the front side to mid -mountain, called Mid -Vail; a lift from Mid -Vail to the mountain peak; and a lift allowing access to the back bowls. Vail quickly grew to become a popular ski resort, a village formed at the base, near the gondola ski lift, which was taken down in the 1970s. By 1970 the mountain had greatly expanded, with a second gondola added in the Lionshead area, which also included residences and shops at the base of the slopes.

In 1989, Vail hosted the Alpine Skiing World Championships with great success. The championships were held in Vail/ Beaver Creek again a decade later in 1999, to even bigger fanfare. Vail/Beaver Creek will host the Alpine Skiing World Championships again in 2015. In the early 2000s, hundreds of millions of dollars were invested in the resort. In 2000, Vail opened Blue Sky Basin, an intermediate -expert back -country area with moguls, tree skiing, cliffs, and ridges. Vail has been the number one ski resort in the United States over 14 times and is always recognized as one of the top skiing destinations in the world.

In summer 2007, after seven years without a new chairlift, Vail undertook one of the biggest lift improvements at a Colorado ski area when it installed two high -speed quad chairlifts. A new plaza was opened at the bottom of the Vista Bahn Express ski lift in Vail Village in 2008. On February 27, 2010, one of the original black diamond trails, International, was renamed Lindsey's to honor Vail's Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn. The trail is next to "Giant Steps" and one of two flanking the original lift number one from the base of the mountain. On December 10, 2010, a new high -speed quad chairlift in the Sun Down Bowl, the High Noon Express opened.

On Opening day in 2011, Vail opened a new ski -in/out fine dining restaurant at Mid-Vail. The new restaurant, named "The Tenth" is named for the famed US Army division that trained nearby and several Vail founders once belonged.

History of Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek is a feast for the eyes; a delight for the senses. The influence of renowned resorts such as Switzerland ’s St. Moritz, Italy ’s Cortina, and Spain ’s Val d ’Aran led to the creation of a unique mountain resort full of excitement and village luxury.

Originally designed to accommodate skiers of all abilities, Beaver Creek Mountain continues to welcome and challenge those who visit its slopes. From the gentle groomed runs of Strawberry Park to the rugged glades and bump runs of Grouse Mountain, Beaver Creek is enjoyed by a variety of Nordic Sports enthusiasts.

When George Townsend first settled in the Valley in 1881, he knew he ’d found something special, an exceptional mountain, lined with aspen groves and beautiful vistas that would become a world renowned destination. In 1972, Vail continued its vision by purchasing the land and began designing a resort that combined western hospitality and European charm. Obstacles delayed resort completion, but on December 15, 1980, Beaver Creek finally opened to the public.

Beaver Creek may be home to incredible corduroy and family -friendly terrain, but its Birds of Prey course also has a reputation for being a formidable stop on the Men ’s Alpine Ski World Cup —as Beaver Creek is the only mountain in the U.S. to regularly host the international race series.
