Evolution of a Logo In August 2016, Beauvoir introduced the School’s refreshed logo: Two children who had consistently been at the center of the image sheltered by the shade of the tree now turned towards each other, fully engaged in a shared moment of discovery and learning. It was not the first time the School’s logo had been refreshed. Since the creation of the School’s first logo in the 1950s by Beauvoir’s first art teacher, Miriam Glass, the image has been reinvigorated many times, always illustrating the values that continue to lie at the heart of Beauvoir’s mission.

Letter from the Head of School Dear Beauvoir Community, The Views 2016 offers a closer look into what Beauvoir provides our students, our faculty and staff, our community and our institution. Guided by our recently published Strategic Vision and Plan, shared work in this community focuses on achieving great goals for student learning and life at Beauvoir. I am delighted at the broad commitment to deliver results for everyone in our learning community.

Earlier this fall, we launched many exciting new initiatives, including a complete refresh of our communication materials. I hope that alumni are reassured by the continuity of the School’s logo redesign. Many worked to hold on to dear and meaningful elements of the Beauvoir logo, originally created by Beauvoir’s first art teacher, Miriam Glass in the early 1950s. Beauvoir’s girls and boys continue to learn together, shaded by the beauty of the tree. Today, the logo captures a moment of collaboration and curiosity, where one child shares something they’ve discovered. These moments happen daily at Beauvoir— children learning not only from their teachers, but from each other. Our communications revisions also include a new website and admissions materials that highlight the ways in which our Core Values enhance our Life Rules. It’s easy to see how we value childhood as a unique and critically important developmental stage in interactions across Beauvoir every day!

The Views has also been redesigned into a more concise publication that provides a glimpse into many areas of our work. We hope you’ll enjoy reconnecting with Beauvoir and learning about our current work.

This issue of the Views is organized to reflect the priorities outlined in Beauvoir’s recently published Strategic Vision and Plan. At the heart of our shared work are efforts to support our children, our educators, our community and our institution.

Beauvoir Library Reimagined to Support Collaborative and Creative Learning

“The Library is a playground of a child’s imagination and the heart of this vibrant school—it is the place where students can come to develop multiple literacies,” – Anna Carello, Assistant Head of School for Program An extraordinarily welcoming space, the highvaulted Beauvoir Library is drenched in light and filled with more than 15,000 volumes. Heavy bookshelves are sometimes pushed to the side of the room to accommodate a sprawling horizontal and vertical city of wooden blocks created by students. The reading loft overhead, adorned with a stunning mural, is an open and inviting space for young children to curl up with books to read with their classmates and friends. The Beauvoir Library invites the exploration of new passions, inspires curiosities and provides students with a place to have their ideas expand and take flight.

Ms. Carello and Beauvoir’s librarians Tony Hurst and Ashley Simpson have been collaborating to envision new possibilities for learning in the Library.

Ms. Carello also worked with Mary Ann Bliss, the Director of Academic Technology, to design a Literacy Lab (launched in fall 2016) within the existing Library space to support tactile and digital literacies as well as traditional printed literacies. The precise location of the Literacy Lab is no accident: it is a space carved out directly between the Library and technology spaces, and in close proximity to the Library’s non-fiction section. The goal of the Literacy Lab is to support creative and collaborative learning in today’s increasingly digital world. Here, students have unique opportunities to create scenes from their own imaginations using green screen technology, to design inventions on project-painted walls, and even to build new technologies with manipulatives, such as programmable robots and a hands-on video game creation platform called Bloxels.

“Bloxels are a great tool because they break down this abstract concept of pixels in computer science and programming into physical blocks,” Ms. Carello explains. “This helps students—who during this developmental stage are very concrete thinkers—develop awareness of abstract concepts.

It’s analogous to developing number sense with students: they need to understand the relationships between numbers before they are numerate. It’s

also analogous to teaching letter patterns and phonics as a step towards developing literacy and becoming a fluent reader.”

In researching how to best reimagine the Library space to meet the needs of today’s students, Ms. Carello, Mr. Hurst and Ms. Simpson met with the Chief of Children’s Literature at the Library of Congress and visited four other independent schools in the area. In January 2016, the schools on the Cathedral Close launched an inter-library online catalog system that allows librarians from all three institutions to access books and resources at all of the Cathedral schools’ libraries for students and faculty.

“Beauvoir is a premier early childhood school in DC and in the country,” Ms. Carello adds. “We are thoughtful in developing our academic programs and are forward-thinking in our approaches to teaching and learning. We have incredible resources at Beauvoir and I’m grateful to be a part of such a wonderful place and to help make our strategic plan, A Beautiful View to 2020, a reality.”

Celebrating the Class of 2016 Congratulations to the Beauvoir Class of 2016! The recent Beauvoir graduates ended their year with a fun-filled week of activities ranging from a pool party and Third Grade Fun Day to a root beer float party with Mrs. V! We wish the Class of 2016 all the best as they embark upon their next educational journey!

The class of 2016 is attending a wide variety of schools post-Beauvoir, including Georgetown Day School, Holton-Arms, Landon, Maret, National Cathedral School, National Presbyterian School, St. Albans, St. Patrick’s, Sidwell Friends, Stone Ridge, Washington Episcopal School and Washington International School.

Highlights from a Beauvoir Summer The summer of 2016 was another fantastic summer at Beauvoir! The hum of activity at Beauvoir never ceased as summer camp welcomed hundreds of campers and Beauvoir’s Voices for Learning program hosted hundreds of educators.

During the 15th summer institute of Voices for Learning: The Beauvoir Center for Teaching and Learning, Beauvoir opened its doors to more than 230 educators as participants in seven professional development courses. Attending workshops including “Project Approach: Designing Curriculum for Young Investigators”, “Diversity K-5: Diving into Diversity with Developmental Lenses” and “The Balanced Teacher and the Resilient Classroom,” Voices for Learning participants hailed from schools and educational institutions nationwide.

Beauvoir Summer welcomed more than 400 campers to each camp session, spanning a total of seven weeks. Campers were joined each session by roughly 45 6th through 12th grade counselors-in-training, 19 of whom were former Beauvoir students. Campers enjoyed summer programming that included a sleepover in Outdoor Adventures, swimming lessons during Splash & Play, the Fireflies leading our 4th of July parade and robotic models built with coding skills. Thanks to all Beauvoir faculty and staff and those who joined our summer programming for making this summer such a success!

INTERNATIONAL CAMPERS SEEK OUT SUMMER CAMP AT BEAUVOIR

By Caroline Maffry, Assistant Director of Auxiliary Programs Imagine traveling 16 hours by plane to attend Beauvoir summer camp! That’s precisely what a group of parents and children from Shanghai did in June. With nothing more than a local friend and limitless inspiration, six mothers and ten children traveled 8,000 miles, rented apartments and cars and provided their children with the experience of a Beauvoir Summer.

Upon hearing this, I asked to interview these six amazing mothers to understand how and why they came to choose Beauvoir Summer out of any camp in the world. Though initially a bit shy navigating the conversation in English, their second language, these mothers quickly warmed and shared the details of their experience. First and foremost, they agreed they wanted their children to learn to speak English in a natural setting with native English speakers. What better a place, they added, then in the capital of the U.S.A.? Although their children had exposure to English in Shanghai, the parents

wanted them to be allowed to make mistakes and take a break from the rigors of an intense Kindergarten curriculum back in China. It was their goal to provide their children with opportunities to be exposed to a different culture and to gain individual independence outside of their comfort zones.

The parents said they found Beauvoir to be an inviting and happy place, and that the importance of play was evident. They were thrilled that their children could come to Beauvoir to play, both outdoors and in, learning and laughing along the way.

In summer 2016, Beauvoir also welcomed campers from several other countries as their parents attended business meetings, visited with family in DC, or returned for a visit to the city after having moved abroad. Campers came from additional locations abroad including: Ecuador, England, Colombia, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Hong Kong!

CATHEDRAL CAMP A creative new program that launched in the summer of 2016 resulted in campers building an 8-foot cathedral as a group project in Beauvoir’s Library. Campers spent three weeks studying the Washington National Cathedral, engaged in art projects and games, explored hidden secrets and thrilling stories, and learned about the Cathedral’s great history. Campers learned how the bells work in the Cathedral tower and discovered the artistry of the Cathedral’s beautiful stained glass windows, terrifying gargoyles, majestic organs and secret treasures while embarking on their tremendous building project.

Name Project Builds Classroom Community Second graders interview each other in September, clipboards in hand and questions ready: How many letters are in your name? Are you named after someone in your family? Do you have a nickname?

Each child chooses a different question to ask; all questions share something in common. The assignment is to study each other’s names through as many lenses as possible. Through this research, children learn more about themselves, discover similarities and differences with classmates and engage in rigorous research from the first days of school.

I was inspired to create this project after attending two professional development workshops in the summer of 2015. First, I learned about structured word inquiry with educator Peter Bowers, next I attended a conference on the project approach with many of my Beauvoir colleagues. I started imagining a project that combined both practices: focusing on the meaning of words and focusing on in-depth research about a meaningful topic. I knew right away that by focusing on children’s names, each child could be an expert and also an investigator.

For two years now, the students in my class have demonstrated how a question that seems small— What’s your name?—can have a thousand new meanings. After collecting data and graphing the information about objective details, we looked at our names from a personal perspective. Children shared their “name stories” with each other. We heard about grandmothers with the same name, alliterative names and names that have a special meaning because of the family’s home language.

with the same letter, families who chose names with roots in another country, families who have a Junior in the bunch and families in which everyone has a different name.

As well as researching the family roots of a name, we researched the linguistic roots using websites, such as etymonline.com. Most children believe that their names are English—what a surprise when they see that their names have French, Latin, Greek or Hebrew roots, for example. And then there are many names that produce the result: No matching terms found. These names became puzzles. They also allowed us to discuss bias: What is my source?

From whose perspective is this dictionary written? Is the history of each language recorded in the same way? And most important as a researcher: Where do I go next? We often turn right to the source: children’s parents. When we couldn’t find accurate information about Zachi’s name, his parents helped us understand not only his name, but more about Zachi and his family as we learned about Igbo, a language from eastern Nigeria.

We started with something simple, and then made connections about the rich details of language and about the family stories in which our names are rooted. Starting the year with this kind of research made a difference in our community. Instead of memorizing each other’s names, we truly got to know one another through our names.

Katie has been selected to present this project, “What’s Your Name?”, at the 2017 Annual Conference of the National Association of Independent Schools.

A FOND FAREWELL

Pat Austin Luce Educator Pat Austin Luce retired from Beauvoir in the summer of 2016 after serving the school community for twenty-six years.

“I came for the experience and stayed for the opportunities, which have been truly remarkable,” Ms. Austin Luce says. “I suppose that is why I was almost surprised to look up and realize how long I had been here. I was never bored.”

Ms. Austin Luce was born and raised in the small town of Four Oaks, North Carolina. She attended the University of North Carolina, majoring in sociology before receiving her master’s degree in social work.

She worked for eight years in crisis intervention and family and child therapy, then started a family of her own and decided to embark on the next chapter in her career. She received her master’s degree in early childhood and elementary education, spent a year teaching in Fairfax County schools, and was then tapped by Beauvoir’s then-Head of School Polly Moreland for a First Grade job shared with her former colleague, Kennon Bowen.

“I loved teaching the little ones,” says Ms. Austin Luce. “First Grade is a heavenly year. The children are just emerging and eager to learn. It is wonderful to be there to light the light, so to speak.”

After four years teaching First Grade, Ms. Austin Luce taught Third Grade for an additional five years before leaving the classroom to tackle new challenges at Beauvoir. Ms. Austin Luce served as Beauvoir’s Director of Curriculum from 19992008, then become the School’s Director of Special Programs. For the last eight years, Ms. Austin Luce also directed Voices for Learning: The Beauvoir Center for Teaching and Learning, a continuing education and professional development program for educators that has offered more than 200 classes to more than 4,000 attendees since its 2002 inception.

One of the first professional development opportunities offered through Voices for Learning was the week-long All Kinds of Minds course called Schools Attuned.

It was a heady time to be involved in this evolution/ revolution and an intensive rethinking of how to present material so that it reached all children: visual learners, auditory learners, children who needed more time to process, things we take for granted now. But it really was a sea-change and Beauvoir was right there working to absorb the lessons and train our teachers.”

All Kinds of Minds programs have been part of the Voices for Learning Summer Institute since its inception.

In addition to the roles she fulfilled at Beauvoir, Ms. Austin Luce has been a notable presence in the world of early childhood education, serving as a sought-after presenter with a number of publications to her credit.

“I leave Beauvoir so greatly enriched by friendships and experience,” Ms. Austin Luce says.

MAHALO, BEAUVOIR!

Summer Travel Grants Each summer, Beauvoir faculty members receive travel grants to embark on experiences away from home as part of their professional development. Take a look at our teachers’ adventures in the summer of 2016!

Where & Why: I traveled to the upper section of the Colorado River in Colorado and Utah to experience the river first-hand, get as close as possible to the source and connect with the Second Grade Global Studies project as we all focus on North America this year.

New Adventures: Some trip highlights included crossing the Continental Divide at an elevation of 10,579 feet, my first time ever visiting the source of a major river, seeing two large bull moose, swimming in the Colorado River. meeting many knowledgeable and enthusiastic Colorado River experts and

Where & Why: Hawaii! We traveled to Oahu, Hawaii to do research for Pre-Kindergarten Global Studies. We visited museums, historical landmarks, botanical gardens and more! We learned about aquatic animals, surfing, traditional foods and Polynesian traditions.

Hawaiian Highlights: One highlight of our trip was visiting Hanahau’oli School, a private independent elementary school in Honolulu. We met with Cindi Gibbs, the Head of School, who gave us a tour and shared with us

Challenges: Breathing at elevations above 11,000 feet was a challenge. So was the need to keep moving when I wanted to stay longer in each area—and having this wonderful trip come to an end!

Fascinating Facts: The complex relationship between the Colorado River and the local geology, geography, wildlife and plants was interesting. The Colorado River greatly impacts the life of humans nearby (and vice versa) as well as at great distances!

Another highlight was snorkeling with Hawaiian green sea turtles!

We traveled to Oahu’s North Shore to visit a beach called Makapu’u where the sea turtles live. We learned about the turtles’ habitat and other sea life.

Learning the Language: We loved learning Hawaiian words and phrases! “Mahalo” means thank you and “ma kai” means oceanside. We can’t wait to teach our Pre-K friends some Hawaiian!

“I was a pilgrim this summer as I walked the Camino Francés along the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile pilgrimage across northern Spain from the French side of the Pyrenees to the Catedral de Santiago in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.”

Who: Leisha Reynolds, Spanish Teacher

Where & Why: I was a pilgrim this summer as I walked the Camino Francés along the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile pilgrimage across northern Spain from the French side of the Pyrenees to the Catedral de Santiago in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. I walked the Camino for many reasons: to meet people from around the world, to deepen my spiritual journey, to immerse myself in a part of Spain I had never visited before and to prove to myself that I could handle the challenge of a 500-mile journey with nothing but a backpack and hiking poles.

The Camino Community: The spirit of the Camino resides in the people you meet daily, with whom you end up sharing stories, laughter, tears, paella, chocolate and more. I made friends from

around the world, people from their 20s to their 80s, and shared life with them during the happiest and the most challenging of days.

Camino, for me, came to mean community. Arriving in Santiago and experiencing the botafumeiro (giant incense burner) at the end of Pilgrim’s mass at the Catedral de Santiago was a once-ina-lifetime opportunity, made possible by having endured 30 days of walking to get there.

Obstacles on the Road: The #1 challenge was the physical pain that comes with walking for 15-20 miles a day and experiencing blisters for the duration of the journey. With sturdy hiking poles and a whole lot of willpower, however, (and enough encouragement from the pilgrims around me), I made

it through. Walking the Camino was not easy, but the feeling of accomplishment from meeting my goal (and from being that much stronger for it) was worth every blister! It is because of my many challenges that the experience was transformative for me.

Grateful for Guidance: The road to Santiago is marked with blue and yellow shells and arrows. If at any time you feel unsure of the way, all you have to do is look a few feet away from you and you will likely see one or both of these symbols guiding the way.

These symbols became a point of fascination for me and a point of deeper, daily meditation as I considered the arrows and shells found in my own life.

MAHALO, BEAUVOIR!

Summer Travel Grants Where & Why: Over the course of the summer I traveled to Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Detroit and New York! In Third Grade, we study bridges and I wanted to learn more about bridges and what they mean to the people who use them each day. I also enjoyed noticing the cables, beams and arches.

The Highlights: The steel cable at the Golden Gate Bridge! The historical marker commemorating suspension bridge designer and builder John A. Roebling in Pittsburgh, PA! The Ambassador International Bridge that connects Michigan to Canada! Standing on the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian walkway!

The Challenge: It was hard to pick which bridges to visit. There are so many incredible bridges. It was also difficult to speak with the people who built these bridges because they were built long ago.

Who: Megan Chounoune, Third Grade Teacher

Making Connections: My favorite part of the trip was being able to walk over these iconic bridges. I saw how these bridges bring people and communities together. Bridges connect countries, cities and neighborhoods. It was awesome to see families, bikers, cars and people using the bridges in different ways. I also discovered that Pittsburgh is nicknamed “The City of Bridges” because there are so many bridges!

ADDITIONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORK Additional professional development work for faculty and staff during the 2015-2016 school year included many inspiring speakers, from an orientation with Dr. Lilian Katz to work with The Rev. Paula Lawrence Wehmiller and educator Rodney Glasgow. Teachers attended dozens of workshops, seminars and conferences, including: Responsive Classroom, a summer institute on the Project Approach with Dr. Katz, NAIS People of Color Conference and Annual Conference, Cathy Fosnot mathematics workshops, Columbia Teachers College Writing Project, and more.

The Program Team also participated in an online course through Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education called Creating School Cultures of Thinking and provided leadership on strengthening Beauvoir’s curricular program. Program Team members led professional development initiatives for faculty, including an effort focused on language arts and literacy in which teachers were trained in new methods of assessment and devoted time to refine their work on guided reading groups.

Birthday Cards from Mrs. Bloch When my mother, Laurie Bloch, began teaching Pre-Kindergarten at Beauvoir in 1989, she was introduced to Plato’s conviction that, “The beginning is the most important part of the work.” Today, she firmly believes that the connections children make with each other, with their teachers and with their school lays crucial groundwork for the rest of their lives.

My mother sent her first birthday card to a Beauvoir student in 1990. It was the end of her first year teaching at Beauvoir and she wanted to maintain that important early student-teacher connection. In that spirit, she decided to send her former students birthday cards each year throughout their time at Beauvoir. Several years later, one of her original students graduating from Third Grade left her with these words: “I am leaving, but I hope that you won’t forget me.” That was when my mother decided to keep the tradition alive and continue to send birthday cards to each of her former students until they graduated from high school.

All told, my mother sent about 4,100 cards to more than 300 former students.

Soon my mother became known throughout the Beauvoir community for sending the cards.

A Beauvoir father once told her some parents had used her tradition of sending cards as a trivia question during a social evening. (Q: How many birthday cards does Mrs. Bloch send each year?

A: About 280!) Another parent reminded her how special the cards remain to her students many years later: “The cards aren’t just birthday cards to these children. They are little reminders of continuity and assurances that the people in their lives really care about them. The children receiving them aren’t even aware that you are planting those seeds.”

Eventually, my mother moved from teaching Pre-Kindergarten to teaching Kindergarten and added another element to the birthday cards.

“At that time, I began telling my students how lucky I was to be at Beauvoir,” she said. “I began calling myself a ‘lucky duck’ and added a duck drawing to the cards.” In recent years, the letters my mother has received back from her former students have included their own hand-drawn lucky ducks.

When my mother retired from Beauvoir in June 2004, she was pleasantly surprised to receive a basket filled with hand-written birthday cards from all the students in the School. By September of that year, she was still sending around 280 cards.

Last May, my mother wrote her final birthday card, as the last students she taught in Kindergarten graduated from high school. The final card was delivered in-person to Hugh Meyer, Beauvoir class of 2007.

Although she is finished sending birthday cards to her former students, the cards are still very much a part of her life. With each final birthday card, my mother let the student know that her birthday is in September, and suggested that perhaps the student reciprocate with a card to her in return.

“What followed every year was an amazing surprise,” she said. “Over the years, I have received letters from grateful students who let me know about their lives, their interests and the special impact that Beauvoir had on them. I treasure these letters and it gives me great joy to reread them from time to time. I’ve realized over the years that the letters the students have sent me are true gifts and wonderful mementos of my time at Beauvoir.”

Building a Stronger Community through Relational Service “I am only one, but I am one, and what I can do, and should do, I will do.” – Helen Keller “Bingo! I got bingo,” Blair exclaimed as she realized her board displayed five tiles in a row. Her teammate and new friend beamed with excitement as Blair read aloud the numbers previously covered by her tiles. As she read her final number, her grandfriend held up a hand for a high-five as they, together, had won the first round of Beauvoir Bingo.

CHAPEL PROGRAMS In alignment with Beauvoir’s evolving service program, the theme for chapel programs during the 2016-2017 school year is inclusivity and hospitality to all people.

During the 2015-2016 school year, Third Grade students began serving in additional leadership roles during chapel, and First through Third Grade chapels moved from the subterranean St. Joseph’s Chapel in the Washington National Cathedral to the more open and airy Great Choir upstairs, a welcoming space that has allowed more parents to attend and more students to more fully engage

citizens known as their new “grandfriends.” Each Second Grade class will visit the Parish six times this year.

Beauvoir’s program is grounded in the belief that service starts close to home and that the experience must be relational, allowing students to make face-to-face connections with those they are partnering with, in order to be meaningful.

Every Beauvoir child is involved in giving to and connecting with others across the community. It’s as simple as young artists in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten decorating coffee sleeves for Beauvoir parents to enjoy each morning. First Grade students interview members of the Beauvoir community

with the beauty of the Cathedral. Now Third Grade students are responsible for serving as ushers, candle snuffers, readers and bowl ringers. Second Grade students draw pictures to illustrate each chapel’s theme, which are then projected onto a large screen brought in to chapel to enable children to see song lyrics and illustrations and more fully participate.

Pre-Kindergarten through Third Grade chapels begin with the ringing of a Buddhist singing bowl.

Candles are lit and two readings follow, one from a religious tradition and the second a poem, song lyric or other form of creative expression.

Student readers share “good news and gratitudes”, highlighted moments collected from their teachers and peers throughout the community, and chapel closes with a blessing, the extinguishing of candles and ringing of the singing bowl before children depart in joyful music.

In the year ahead, First Grade students will also interview staff at the Cathedral, making connections to their Cathedral studies and partnering with 7th grade students at National Cathedral School who also study the Cathedral.

Just as Second Grade students develop relationships over games of bingo with their grandfriends, Third Grade students will make connections with the very young, as an extension of their Washington, DC studies takes them into the city to get to know two and three year olds at Martha’s Table who will become their regular reading buddies. Third Graders have already started to practice by reading books and making new friendships with the toddlers in Beauvoir’s Early Learning Center. Every child decorates and assembles a bag with healthy snacks that are then given to DC Central Kitchen for distribution.

“Service is reciprocal,” Rev. Barbaro says. “We are helping others and they are helping us. No matter what their age is, our students have gifts to share that can make a difference in their community and the world.”

Reflection includes creating time for students to process the experience afterwards in order to better understand themselves and promote growth. For Second and Third Grade students, this includes considering how they believe others saw them during their service experience.

“My phrase for what we are trying to achieve is “relational service,’” Rev. Barbaro says. “It is a two-way street and it needs to include interactions that teach respect and empathy.”

“There is great pride in the intentionality of this work around service,” says Head of School Amy Vorenberg.

Through the Beautiful Lens of a

“We were envisioning a way to create community and a space in which to discuss a range of topics—in the wider world, but also relative to Beauvoir.” – Rocky Galloway, Co-Chair of Kaleidoscope Kaleidoscope, a new parent-led initiative and committee of the Parents Association, was launched in the spring of 2016. The committee was formed to support parents in their approach to conversations related to diversity and inclusion with vibrant curiosity, courage and interest in connecting across differences.

The effort launched in April with a discussion moderated by Reverend Paula Lawrence Wehmiller, educator and consultant, who focused on the shared vocation of parenting. The gathering attracted 75 parents from the Beauvoir community, delighting parent organizers Rocky Galloway, Lauralyn Lee, Nicole Lee, Jocelyn Sturdivant and Kim D’Abreu, who began working on the idea of initiating the group two years earlier. In the lead-up to the inaugural event, these parents talked to more than 100 of their peers to gather feedback and advice, received backing from Head of School Amy Vorenberg, and moved forward with the parent-led programming focused on diversity and inclusion.

Galloway and Lee became the first co-chairs of Kaleidoscope.

“It seemed important that this either stand or fall on the basis of parent interest and commitment, but also that it was something that was truly initiated by and responsive to the needs of parents,” Galloway said. “We were envisioning a way to create community and a space in which to discuss a range of topics—in the wider world, but also relative to Beauvoir.”

“Recognizing that parents are our children’s first teachers, Kaleidoscope offers parents an opportunity to take advantage of the vibrancy of our community, drawing on each other as resources to help navigate our children’s questions about a complex world,” reinforced Lee. Rev. Wehmiller’s April 2016 presentation was followed three weeks later by gatherings of small groups of parents who were eager to engage in courageous and collaborative conversations around

religion, socioeconomics, family structure and race. This second event was attended by more than 50 parents who came to Beauvoir on a late spring evening to participate in the conversations.

“The response was overwhelming across race, gender and socioeconomic lines,” Galloway says.

“It turns out many parents in all of the grades were hungry for a place and way to talk about these topics.”

In the 2016-2017 school year, Kaleidoscope continues to evolve based on parent needs. Fall events have included a discussion with Bishop Mariann Budde focused on parenting in complex times and a panel conversation featuring education and media experts on parenting during this presidential election year. The election conversation attracted more than 80 parents and was moderated by Gene Batiste, former executive director of what is now the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington (AISGW). It also featured Matt Biel, chief of child and adolescent psychiatry at Georgetown University Hospital; Lori Adams Chabay, early childhood education researcher and consultant; Gloria Riviera, ABC News correspondent; Jim Sciutto, chief national security correspondent at CNN; and Val Wise, head of school at National Child Research Center (NCRC).

Galloway and Lee agree that the best part of the creation of Kaleidoscope has been that it was born out of a proactive, shared interest of parents and not from crisis. The words included on the group’s first invitation beautifully sum up Kaleidoscope’s vision: “We believe that a kaleidoscope elegantly represents the dimensions of difference in the Beauvoir community, and how we can use those differences as connection points for greater understanding.”

ALUMNI PROFILE:

Gerard “Ford” Craft ’89 We recently had the opportunity to talk to Beauvoir alumnus and 2015 James Beard Award winner Gerard Craft ’89 about his career in the restaurant business.

Craft heads up Niche Food Group, an umbrella organization for five budding restaurants in and around St. Louis. Most recently, the restaurant group welcomed Porano Pasta, a fast-casual Italian restaurant. “Think Cava, but Italian,” Craft says.

Craft’s aim is to bring healthy, honest food to a wide market, using locally grown ingredients from within the state of Missouri to craft creative dishes ranging from pistachio hummus with focaccia to a Porano bowl comprised of rice, garlic/chili oil, slow roasted pork, crispy garlic, sweet peppers, hot honey and cilantro.

Each of the five restaurants within Niche Food Group has its own character, but all are connected by an underlying culinary ingenuity. Craft says he has a “no rules approach [to his culinary creations] based on techniques, but out-of-the-box… more thoughtful and artistic.”

While Craft has moved away from the D.C. area to embark upon an exciting journey in St. Louis, he hasn’t forgotten about his childhood days spent at Beauvoir.

He fondly recalls the care and compassion Beauvoir teachers showed during his formative years, as well as intense games of kickball during recess.

For those inspired by Craft’s passion for the culinary arts, there are numerous classes available and many chefs willing to have kids spend some time in their kitchen observing their work, he says. Reach out to some of the local chefs and try to get into their kitchen for an afternoon. It was, after all, in the kitchen where Craft first fell in love with the culinary world.

Dear Beauvoir Community, During the 2015-2016 school year, countless parent volunteers—who were always eager to get involved, help out and support our children and teachers—enriched the lives of Beauvoir students and supported our amazing faculty and staff. The entire school community is grateful for all that our families give!

I cannot imagine a better way to spend my final year as a Beauvoir parent than being surrounded by the wonderful volunteers who support Beauvoir’s “beautiful view” of childhood. Every parent has helped endorse the creative and courageous learners at Beauvoir in some significant way.

Beauvoir Volunteerism by the Numbers

The possibilities for parent involvement at Beauvoir are endless. On any given day, you may catch a glimpse of an energetic parent shelving books in the Library, joining children in the dining room or providing a tour to a prospective parent. As the seasons change, volunteers transition from brushing a child’s hair on Photo Day and managing cash registers at the Book Fair to decorating for the Scholarship Auction, selling tickets at Flower Mart, arranging flowers for Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day and planning Third Grade Fun Day. I am overwhelmed by the countless hours of dedication that can be observed at any given moment.

OUR INSTITUTION

Our School’s Financial Highlights Beauvoir finished the 2015-2016 school year with a strong operating position, driven by admissions yield, high student retention and growing community participation in our auxiliary programs. The School’s healthy financial position reflects the joint efforts of administrators and staff both in the leadership of Beauvoir’s many programs and in the financial results they have achieved.

Beauvoir’s efforts to continuously grow alternative sources of revenue has helped reduce the rate of tuition growth and grow important reserves and endowment funds, helping to secure the current needs and future sustainability of the School. This includes making great strides in auxiliary programs with increased participation annually for Beauvoir Summer, Beauvoir Pool, Beauvoir Language Institute, Enrichment Classes and After Beauvoir Center. In addition, 2015-2016 was a recordbreaking year for Annual Giving and the Scholarship Auction. Gifts from the full community totaled nearly $1.5 million and supported financial aid, excellence in teaching, professional development, collaborative learning spaces and innovative hands-on technology tools for our children.

Every school year is another financial stepping stone to Beauvoir’s future. The 2016-2017 school year promises to be another financially strong year. As we embrace our new Strategic Vision and Plan, we celebrate the School’s financial health, as well as our community’s commitment to building an enduring foundation for a lifelong spirit of learning.

Elena Botelho and her husband, Carlos, have two sons. Their older child Anton is in First Grade. Elena is a senior partner with ghSMART, a leadership advisory firm, where she coaches CEOs and those on the path to the role, and the founder of CEO Genome Project. Elena has previously worked as an associate partner at McKinsey, a corporate finance associate at Andersen Worldwide, and an investment officer with AIG-Brunswick private equity fund in Moscow. Elena holds an MBA in finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She earned a CPA and bachelor’s degree from SUNY Binghamton. Elena grew up in Moscow, Russia and in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Nancy Carr and her husband, Robert, are the parents of Beauvoir alumni, Rachel ’85, Rebecca ’88 and Matthew ’94, and the grandparents of Sydney Rizzo in Kindergarten. Nancy previously served on Beauvoir’s board from 19831989, where she served as chair of the Beauvoir Capital Campaign from 1987-1989. Nancy co-chaired the Past Parent Committee for the Building Hand in Hand Campaign in 2001 and served on the National Cathedral School Governing Board. She most recently chaired the Board of Collegiate Directions CDI, a non-profit organization committed to closing the education, achievement and opportunity gap for low-income students. Nancy is a trained psychiatric social worker and received her MSW from Columbia University and her bachelor’s degree from Beaver College.

Dory Clark and her husband, Chad, are the parents of Charles in Third Grade and alumna Claiborne ‘14. Dory is also serving as president of the Beauvoir Parents Association for the 20162017 school year. She has previously co-chaired the Beauvoir Scholarship Auction and has served on the PA executive committee. Dory received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her JD from the University of Richmond. She has previously worked as an attorney at Jackson Kelly PLLC and currently serves on the Governing Board at The Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys, the Children’s National Medical Center Hearing and Speech Center, and the Washington Winter Antiques Show.

Tom DePasquale and his husband, Rafik, are the parents of twins Luke and Lena in First Grade. Tom is an entrepreneur and investor who has founded a number of ventures, including Outtask, Inc., a provider of corporate travel and expense management services, where he served as CEO and executive vice president before it merged with Concur Technologies. Tom also founded and served as CEO of Taxi Magic, now called CURB, is chairman of Yopine, an app that allows people to create and share polls, and was co-inventor of a patent for a computer-implemented method of targeting electronic messages to travelers. He received Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2002 and was recognized

by Business Travel Magazine as one

Laura DeBonis and her husband, Scott Nathan, are parents of alumna Lia ’16 and Asher in First Grade. Laura has served as a board member for the Digital Public Library of America and was also recently appointed

by President Obama to serve on the Public Interest Declassification Board. Her professional experience includes a variety of leadership roles at Google, including director of library partnerships for book search. She has since been a consultant to several organizations, including serving as chair of the technology review team for the Internet Safety Technical Task Force at the Berkman Center at Harvard University. Laura serves on the board of trustees of WGBH Boston and has served as a trustee of the Boston Public Library and the Park School. She earned a bachelor’s

Hayes Smith and his wife, Jill, are the parents of Tyler in Third Grade and Olivia in First Grade. Hayes is a managing director at Credit Suisse in the investment banking and capital markets division. He is responsible for investment banking coverages of private equity firms and corporate clients, providing his clients and their portfolio companies with leveraged loans, high-yield debt, equity market transactions, and mergers and acquisition advice. Hayes served as the governance head of the Americas investment banking campus recruiting effort and is the UVA and Georgetown recruiting team captain. He has previously worked as an associate attorney at Mayer Brown and Platt.

Hayes earned a bachelor’s degree, JD and MBA from the University of Virginia.

AIMS ACCREDITATION The Association of Independent Maryland & DC Schools (AIMS) accreditation process was underway during the 2015-16 school year, with a visiting team of 11 accreditors visiting Beauvoir and reviewing all aspects of school life based on the School’s self-study and documentation. A subsequent report from the accreditation team reflected deep support for our work and for Beauvoir, with no major recommendations. Beauvoir delivered its action plan response to AIMS in September and expects to receive full accreditation by the end of the year.

Letter from the Board Chair Dear Beauvoir Community, On behalf of Beauvoir’s Governing Board, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to each and every one of you for your extraordinary support during the 2015-2016 school year. More than 600 donors contributed to Annual Giving, with gifts totaling $820,000, the highest amount in the School’s history. The 2016 Scholarship Auction also broke records, netting $660,000 for financial aid. Thank you very much to Annual Giving co-chairs Cathie Martin and Michael Rankin, and auction co-chairs Laura Terry and Sogand Zamani, for their leadership and commitment to Beauvoir.

In June, the Governing Board said thank you and farewell to Jim New, who completed his second term. Jim’s leadership on finance and investments and his sound judgment on all matters were gifts to Beauvoir. Longtime supporter, past parent and outgoing board member Steve McGregor also provided strategic support. Steve pushed us towards excellence and reminded us of our deep connection and responsibility to the Cathedral Close. We also thanked Liz Dougherty and Sylvia Davis White for their service as members of the Governing Board. Through their leadership both Liz and Sylvia raised the sights of our Annual Giving program and consistently offered insight and thoughtful leadership. Finally, we honored Sarah S. Clapp ’83, board member, parent and alumna, who served for two years as president of the Parents Association. Sarah represents the best of Beauvoir and was an exceptional leader of our school.

During the 2015-2016 school year, the Governing Board worked in partnership with our esteemed Head of School, Amy Vorenberg, to set clear goals that reflected the School’s mission. Specifically, we set out to strengthen our governance practices, think broadly and critically about our endowment investments and other financial policies, and support Amy in establishing best practices throughout the School. I am also proud of our work to support Bishop Mariann Budde and her call for improved interaction and collaboration across the Cathedral Close.

As we look toward the future, with a dedication to the intentional teaching of young children and leadership in early childhood education, we seek to attract the best faculty, grow our endowment, and reimagine learning spaces. In support of our goals, we welcomed new board members Elena Botelho, Nancy Carr, Laura DeBonis, Tom DePasquale, Hayes Smith and Dory Clark, our newest president of the Parents Association. They are a talented, attentive and passionate group, and we are fortunate.

Thank you, Amy, for your vision, authenticity and hard work on behalf of children. Along with generations of Beauvoir leaders, faculty, staff and parents, you are deeply committed to young children and the belief that the beginning is truly the most important part of the work.

Dear Beauvoir Families, On April 29, 2017, we will gather as a community for the 42nd time to celebrate the Annual Scholarship Auction. In choosing this coming year’s Auction theme, we explored the meaning Beauvoir holds for each of us. Within minutes, we gravitated toward the notion that this school is a sanctuary, a respite, a home to all who come here. In today’s increasingly complicated world, the peace that Beauvoir offers – whether in the welcoming chatter of friends getting coffee in the atrium, or in the never-more-essential Beauvoir Life Rules and Core Values – is truly a gift to us all. Our students keep a piece of Beauvoir with them as they move out into the world and our alumni feel pulled to return to this magical place. From this thought process, our theme was born: “Beauvoir – There’s No Place Like Home.”

In the spirit of returning to our roots, honoring our Strategic Plan initiative of stronger collaboration across the Close and our theme of “There’s No Place Like Home,” we have decided to bring the Auction home again. We are overjoyed to announce that the 2017 Scholarship Auction will be held inside the Washington National Cathedral.

The Scholarship Auction generates financial aid for Beauvoir students. Last year’s Auction surpassed all expectations and generated more than $700,000. Also important, the event builds goodwill within the Beauvoir community by inspiring participation of all community members. Last year, more than one hundred parents committed their time, skills and energy to organize and bring to fruition this wonderful evening.

Please mark your calendars now to join us on April 29, 2017 at the Washington National Cathedral for an evening that promises to be inspiring, festive and fun for all. Also, please reach out to one of us if you have an interest in helping with the Auction. There is a place for everyone who wants to volunteer or contribute.
