ASSURING THE QUALITY OF YOUR SERVICES

Everybody in the business has to believe their livelihood is based on the quality of the product or service they provide. The manager or owner must be absolutely intolerant of any short cuts, or staff at every level will think and say ‘well, if the boss doesn’t give a damn, why should I?” • Ask Yourself Do you know what’s happening behind your treatment room doors? • Are you continually upgrading your client experiences? • Are you getting a high yield of return business? • Are your clients sending you hot referrals? • Is your average client spending increasing? • Do your clients feel they are getting value for money? Can you be assured that you are meeting the ever-increasing demands of your clients? If your answers are all yes, well done – you have a very high standard of quality control in your business. If you have answered no, or not sure, to some of the questions, then it is time to investigate the quality of your services.

Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten

WHAT IS QUALITY? Quality is the minimum level of service that a business chooses to provide in order to satisfy its target clientele. At the same time, it is the degree of consistency the business can maintain in providing the predetermined level of service. Offer the highest salon customer service to make it your salon’s competitive advantage.

Gucci Family Slogan

CLIENTS FEEDBACK Client satisfaction is the end results of good salon customer service. So, how do you know if your clients are happy? The simple answer is: you ask them. Client surveys are an excellent way to define how satisfied your clients are with the quality of your services. Using salon customer feedback by finding out usable information from your clients, you will be able to recognise shortfalls in the way clients are being served, allowing you to foresee problems. The survey is given to clients and asks questions relating to the service they received. It should ask for a rating of the service so you know how (dis)satisfied they were. The rating should also denote what section of the service may have let them down. This is a fantastic way to sort our areas of your quality control and salon customer service that needs revising, training and upgrading. Remember, only the customer and the customer alone, will pay your costs and provide your profits; withoutcustomers there is no business, so make it your business to keep them happy!

A study recently published study showed evidence of a systemic absorption of certain sunscreen ingredients into the blood stream. Although this is not a new finding it has shone a light on the whole chemical versus physical sunscreen debate. So the question is should we avoid chemical filters in sunscreen and are we preventing vitamin D production by wearing sunscreen all the time and blocking out the sun. Photostability describes how slowly the UV protection of a sunscreen filter or product will break down due to exposure to UV radiation. Sunscreen filters fall into two classes Chemical or Physical. Physical filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the most stable and maintain their ability to filter UV rays. A physical block will not penetrate the skin and therefore tends to cause fewer problems for sensitive/ reactive skin. The ingredient Zinc oxide gives the most extensive protection from UV rays. Chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays and transforms them so that the skin does not absorb them, whereas a physical block prevents the solar rays from penetrating the skin by reflecting them. A chemical sunscreen will tend to be more reactive on sensitive skins due to the chemicals, and they cannot emit all UV rays, some rays will still penetrate the skin. Chemical

filters are changed by the UV rays, causing the protection they provide to decrease. This is why it is important to reapply sunscreen every two hours to maintain the required level of protection. The change in their chemical composition also means that they release free radicals into the skin which can cause premature aging. With this in mind it seems obvious that physical sunscreens are the better option when protecting yourself from UV rays, however it is not quite that simple. It is important to note that physical blocks still will absorb and convert to heat, and only reflect about 5% of UV light. Although the recent study shows absorption of the ingredients into the blood stream, it does not mean the ingredients are unsafe. The researchers used significantly higher quantities of the sunscreen than we do in real life and they noted that “The systemic absorption of sunscreen ingredients supports the need for further studies to determine the clinical significance of these findings.” We need to remember that the use of sunscreen either chemical or physical is a critical element of a skin cancer prevention strategy. Therefore if in a situation where you find yourself with only the option of chemical sunscreen it is far more beneficial to your health

S to wear the chemical sunscreen than not to wear it. What about vitamin D? Vitamin D affects many different functions in the skin. It is important for skin barrier function and the skin immune response. It affects how your skin sheds dead cells, as well as promoting wound healing and tissue repair. So, it will come as no surprise then to learn that deficiency in Vitamin D is implicated in skin conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis and vitiligo. There are three ways to get this fat soluble vitamin D. They are food, supplements and sunlight. The problem with sunlight is that too much sunlight is not good for the skin health and aging. There are a number of factors that affect the process of vitamin D production in the skin including your age, elderly skin is thinner and therefore less capable of synthesising vitamin D. Your skin type, fair skin will produce up to six fold the amount of vitamin D produced by darker skin types. The fact that we get little sunlight at this time of the year in Ireland is also an issue, vitamin D levels in the skin are affected by the lack of sunshine here.

Eavanna Breen Director Akina Beauty and Laser Clinic

If you have a recurrent skin condition that hasn’t resolved with other kinds of treatments you may have a vitamin D deficiency. Speaking to your doctor or dermatologist about having blood tests done for vitamin D levels is a better option than simply taking a supplement without speaking to someone first. To date the data on sunscreens preventing the skin’s absorption of the UV rays necessary to form vitamin D has shown that sunscreens do not compromise vitamin D synthesis.

FG INNOVATION M A N A G E M E N T

Ireland's hospitality sector is losing out on a valuable revenue stream and marketing platform by not sufficiently harnessing the business of beauty, according to two leading spa experts. Eileen Fleming who owns The Buff Day Spa in Dublin and spa consultant Heidi Grimwood together launched FG Innovation Management this month, providing tailor-made services around the running and commercial challenges of spa businesses, particularly those linked to hotels and leisure amenities Low revenue, insufficient marketing, under-utilised treatment rooms, poor staff retention and recruitment issues are among the significant challenges the business addresses with clients, according to owner Eileen Fleming. Many hotels have spas that are viewed simply as a necessary guest service, rather than a stand-alone business entity. Often badly run by well-intentioned beauty therapists, with no business experience, they can end up costing money and damaging reputation, rather than enhancing the hotel brand, the award-winning day spa owner says. Business development services from FG Innovation Management include operational management takeover for an agreed period, a digital marketing directory to promote Irish spas, and The Spa Hub Training Academy offering certified training and continuous personal development (CPD). An operational management takeover, which can cover a day, a year, or more, identifies how to increase profitability as well as opportunities to reduce costs without affecting the guest experience. This hands-on approach empowers the spa management team to develop the business, as well as creating a strong team through training and development. A one-day business analysis provides a focus on understanding the business needs, its strategic direction, and initiatives that will accelerate business growth, including a financial analysis and 'mystery guest' reporting. FG Innovation Management incorporates a complementary Go to the Spa digital marketing directory to actively share promotions and events, increasing brand awareness and directing traffic from social media direct to the spa listings. Go to the Spa gift vouchers will also provide a gifting opportunity with a choice of Spa destinations for the recipient to choose from.Online and In-house Training The Spa Hub Training Academy offers online and in-house certified training to ensure spa professionals are motivated and continually developing their skills. As well as hands-on therapy courses, there is an Elite Mentor Programme for aspiring spa managers and existing managers who wish to further develop their skills and career. The Spa Finishing School bridges the gap from college to the workplace and equips therapists with the tools to succeed in the beauty services sector. The idea for the new mentoring and business development service for Ireland's spa and wellness industry came from a 12-month consultancy contract where Heidi Grimwood worked with Eileen Fleming and her staff at The Buff Day Spa. The successful strategy to grow profitability and to create and implement training programmes and standard operating procedures (SOPs) identified the remarkable business success that could be achieved with a focused management approach.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, I

A MAKE-OVER FOR THE SPA SECTOR!

Knowing that these initiatives could be introduced to any spa or wellness business drove the pair to develop their dedicated spa development service. "We share a passion and commitment to developing the spa industry and raising standards, and we genuinely love working with clients to identify and implement the strategies that will grow their business to extraordinary success", Heidi Grimwood explains.

Ever wondered what it would be like to take a leap of faith, block-out the naysayers and follow that passion of yours? Well, this month you’re in for a treat. We learn how tenacity paired with hard work, peppered with a hint of sass equals the product of a successful business. We learn how the brainchild of Mrs Maria Morgan came to be and how choosing the right career over financial rewards is paying dividends for the Director of BeautifulJobs, and the very reason why you’re reading this magazine! After much encouragement BeautifulJobs Director, Maria Morgan sits down in the hot seat with Linda Pototzki and reveals how trusting her gut translated into the number one beauty recruitment marketing firm in Ireland that has also branched out to the UK, as well as officially announcing today that BeautifulJobs Magazine has a beautiful new sister named BelleVIVE. You’re going to love her!

After returning home from Down Under, Maria was faced with a major crossroad in the shape of two job offers. One, a lucrative pay package and the other a lower paying salary. Despite the temptation, Maria chose the latter option as it was a perfect combination of channelling both her natural flair for recruitment and her undying passion for beauty for a major specialist beauty recruitment firm at the time. THE BIRTH OF SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL When the economic downturn hit, it led to the closure of the recruitment agency which led the Dundalk-native to move into a similar role in a separate company. Then, struck a lightbulb moment! Spotting a gap in the market for a unique beauty recruitment online application, Maria began doublejobbing circa. 2008.

Meet the Mastermind behind BEA

MARIA MORGAN Maria tells how she hustled in her 9-5 job, to come home to tend to her three sons and then burn the midnight oil in the evenings and weekends to develop her own business that we now know and love. We learn how the entrepreneur juggles being a mum, wife and a girl boss. CAREER Having a business and marketing degree fastened securely under her belt, Maria began her career as a recruitment consultant. While she enjoyed meeting people every day in the recruitment circle, she satisfied her hunger for beauty and started attending evening beauty and airbrush make-up courses before taking-up post as a sales manager for a cosmetics beauty brand and later moving to work in their Sydney office.

The Director says: “I worked hard for this company and one line that I like to live by is, if you don’t ask you won’t get. Everyone I spoke to I asked to share the word about what I did’’. With BeautifulJobs being none paid at the start, I worked my 9-5 job by day. I worked on the website in the evenings and weekends as well as caring for my family.” Having to-do lists and schedules allow me to juggle the demands of being a mum and I always now try to keep my weekends free now for family time when possible.” For many years Maria provided free career advice and free recruitment advertising to build brand credibility of the company within the industry. In May 2008, Maria recalls this as a major milestone as she secured her first job posting for Steiner, a luxury on board

spa cruise ship company. At which stage BeautifulJobs was then the first recruitment website catering for the beauty industry in Ireland. Fast forward to the end of 2013, Maria left her then job and turned her evening/ weekend nixer into her full-time dream job. In 2017, she made her first hire for her own empire, Briege, aka her righthand lady, and then unlocked the doors to her very own Beautiful Jobs HQ in Newry.

AUTIFULJOBS...

“

Throughout my life, I was always about choosing my career path over financial rewards. It was more important to me to love what I am doing on a day-to-day basis rather than thinking about the money.

“

BEAUTIFULJOBS

Since then the business has gone from strength-to-strength through building her staff, client base as well as service offering to include online advertising, recruitment consultancy, career development, candidate psychometric testing and now brand promotion. ‘’I have an amazing team who work very hard and are genuinely interested in helping me develop the company’’ As well as Briege, her team also includes Diane who works in Accounts & Administration, Stephen in Graphic Design, Eddie who has been there from 2008 and is the main man behind the web development and Adam, Heather and Daniel who also work on the IT end. Maria also mentions that her husband Ciaran plays a huge part in expanding the business. ‘’He’s brilliant with new ideas and many of our new features are down to him. We spend a lot of time discussing the business and how we can keep growing’’ SUCCESS Today BeautifulJobs recruit for some of the biggest names in the business such as The Skin Nerd, IMAGE Skincare, Yonka Skincare, The Clarins Group, Nails Dublin and Renew Clinic along with many other leading hotel spa’s, beauty and nail salons, aesthetic clinics, colleges and distribution companies. Business is thriving, website traffic is increasing and candidate consultations are soaring to now over 200 on a given week.

No matter who the person is, I always ask for feedback and then I act on it. For example, if someone says that they enjoy the magazine, I always ask if there is anything else that they would like to see. I am always open to learning and tailoring our content to the needs and wants of our audience.

AND THE SECRET INGREDIENT? The company has moved on from initially recruiting for beauty and spa therapists to now placing people in roles like pharmacy and retail advisors, hairstylists, management, sales and training professionals to college tutors, marketing, PR, administration and customer service and even accounting roles that fall within the beauty-related industry. The BeautifulJobs App launches later this month, which will now make the job application process easier while on-the-go. There will also be a helpful integrated tracking and HR systems website features for employers.

Maria is meeting the growing demands through unveiling a new supplement that is, BelleVIVE for readers to keep up-to-date between magazine issues. BelleVIVE will cater for everything outside of jobs, with feature content focusing on beauty, products, events and launches, lifestyle, nutrition, health and wellbeing as well as also being a daily newsfeed website feature.

“I am excited to officially launch BelleVIVE in this issue because through our insights we can see there are also readers who work outside of the industry. For example, a school teacher mentioned recently how she enjoyed reading about the new products on the market but also our travel and health articles’’ ‘’Originally we were promoting companies we recruit for only but as the interest from other brands grew so much so that there wasn’t enough space in the magazine for everything. BelleVIVE grew naturally to cater for this demand.” THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT Having one central place for recruitment and promotion with a key emphasis on jobs, education and brand marketing coupled with sharing the latest and greatest innovative trends within the hair, beauty and aesthetics industries, remains the top priority for this visionary.

Recruitment can be diffcult from the point of view there is stress involved every day to meet the high expectations of people. But, I am doing exactly what I want to do and I truly love what I do.

READ ALL ABOUT IT An occasional one-page newsletter with snippets of news this time last year and has grown to a now 50-page successful e-Magazine that is growing in readers by the issue hailing from Hong Kong, Sydney, London, New York, Dubai and across Europe.

And the future of the magazine? While seeing a print version is not on the near horizon, Maria doesn’t rule it out in the future. Watch this space!

HEAD TO TOE NEUTRAL

Article by Eider Leite

Neutrals have been in every season as ‘to go’ pieces so they are not necessarily a new thing. However, monochrome neutrals are still going to be majorly hot for Spring-Summer 2019, so investing in a range of neutrals is a good move. This season there has barely been a streetstyle snap that hasn’t featured a classic beige trench, cream linen suit, or some tan accessories. Layer neutrals and keep your look tonal or practice unusual colour pairing - you will love it! You can never go wrong with the classics! Spring is the season for white, so go big or go home. All you need is your go-to white skinnies, a simple white tee, and a lightweight cardigan. Slip on your cutest leather mules, grab your best bag and you’re ‘out the door’. You will be the master in neutrals. In a sea of seasonal ‘must have’ colours, this is the ultimate ‘anti-trend’ trend. You’ll never go wrong with neutrals! When you are investing your time and money in creating your handmade wardrobe don’t overlook these colours. Whether you wear one colour head-to-toe or mix it up with prints and textures, neutrals have your back.

VERSATILE PANTS: IIt is important to have several pairs of pants in your closet that you love. Swap things up and wear your dressy slacks with casual shirts and a pair of jeans with some of your more dressy shirts. You must have one pair of skinny or slim/straight dark-wash jeans in your wardrobe. They will never go out of style and you can always count on them to polish off your outfit. Tip: Invest in a good pair of jeans - J brand, Paige or Sevens are great options.

Build a strong wardrobe with timeless, quality pieces and avoid purchasing excess clothing that you really don’t need. VERSATILE TOPS: Timeless tops ranging from flannels, cotton to oxford will help you look your best without forcing you to keep tons of shirts in your closet. A good mix of dressy and casual shirts can be used to create several looks, and pairing ties with your shirts will help add versatility to your outfits. Tip: Cut back on the number of tops you own, but increase the number of wearable looks, mixing and matching the good quality pieces you own.

HOW TO BUILD A STRONG WARDROBE VERSATILE SHOES: Keep a few pairs of shoes at the ready that will look their best when you head off to work or head out on a social night out. The secret is to keep them clean and polished. Tip: Invest in a nice pair of Brogues, a good Chelsea boot, and a good pair of runners. You will be sorted!.

When I got married at 32 years old I took the idea of starting a family for granted and it never crossed my mind that it would be a roller coaster of a journey. “I took everything for granted. I thought I was going to have two babies when I wanted to have them, and that I was in control of my body,”. But after two years of trying with nothing happening, we decided to go to a doctor - and were left shocked by what they told us.The doctors couldn’t find anything to explain why we weren’t falling pregnant, but told me that because of my age I should have a chat with IVF consultants. “It just didn’t sit right with me - I thought I could do it naturally. We went [to the IVF clinic] and again were told we needed to start IVF as soon as possible as age was

to go to a dark place. “We shut ourselves off from family and friends, we didn’t tell anyone except our parents . No one knew what we were going through. I then found out from doctors that I had an underactive thyroid. They put me on medication, but I came home and told my husband I wasn’t going to take it, it’s something I’m going to fight on my own.” I was four stone overweight now. I enlisted in the help of a kinesiologist, homeopathist and reflexologist as well as changing up her diet. I went back to the doctors a few weeks later and thought everything was going to be perfect - I found out my thyroid was even more underactive. They told me they needed to up my drugs to a higher dose.

not on our side. I remember ringing my mam after and crying saying I couldn’t believe that this is where I had to go. I was put on medication as I began my first IVF session, which my body reacted quite negatively to.

I was very into fitness at the time but because of the medication my body started to slow down and I became depressed.

The depression came with weight gain and the two unsuccessful IVF sessions we had as well. We shut ourselves off from family and friends as we struggled to cope with the failed IVF. We didn’t go to counselling after the first session of IVF, we thought we could handle it. I just started

So determined not to have to take medication for the rest of my life for my thyroid I went off and researched and found a nutritional coach and started my journey of learning how to eat properly. I ate five times a day every three hours and my energy started to come back. It was hard, it was a challenge because four stone is a lot of weight to lose. The first stone came off in the first four months and with that then my energy came back. I joined a gym, got a personal trainer, and had more energy, confidence and motivation. I shifted the four stone within a year and a half , I was 40 now and we said we’d try one more cycle of IVF and if that didn’t work we would give up on having kids.

We went back into the clinic and was told they were going to use a natural cycle now with no drugs - this was music to my ears. They said we need to wait on your next period to start. But we were completely shocked by what happened next when I didn’t feel well on Father’s Day that year. I didn’t feel well so I took a pregnancy test - our first ever positive pregnancy test! We did it naturally and it felt fantastic. Later that year we welcomed our daughter Hannah, and we finally got their happy ending.

It was like a dream and each time we look at her we think of her as our little angel that was sent to us.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MAKING A COMPENSATION CLAIM FOR PARALYSIS? P

aralysis can be permanent or temporary and can vary in severity depending on the type and affected area. Regardless, however, of the duration or the severity, it can be completely life-changing, with long-lasting effects on the sufferer and their loved one’s lives. It can stem from a range of accidents and it can also be treated in many different ways and require different alterations to the sufferer’s lifestyle so paralysis compensation claims can be very complex and can vary greatly from case to case. The aim of this article is to give you an overview of paralysis, its causes, variations and consequences. It also aims to give you an idea of how a successful compensation claim could help. CAUSES OF PARALYSIS Paralysis tends to stem from serious accidents involving falls or heavy impacts, but it can also stem from other incidents such as the severing of nerves and so on. The main causes of paralysis include: Accidents in the workplace Road traffic accident Slips, trips and falls involving heights or heavy impacts Medical negligence Of course, less severe, temporary paralysis can come from more minor incidents, although the above are the most common. TYPES OF PARALYSIS There can be many different types of paralysis arising from the accidents mentioned above. We’ve listed some of the most common below to help you understand the medical jargon. Localised paralysis. This is where the paralysis affects just one specific part of the body, often caused by nerve damage. It can affect areas such as a foot, an arm or the face. Generalised paralysis. This is where the paralysis affects a larger part of the body. Monoplegia. This is where just one limb is paralysed either permanently or temporarily.

Hemiplegia. This is where one side of the body is paralysed, affecting an arm and a leg. Paraplegia. This is a condition where both legs are paralysed. This can include the pelvis, abdomen or anything below the chest. Tetraplegia. The most severe form of paralysis, this is where both arms and legs are paralysed, often leaving the sufferer with only the use of their head and, in some cases, neck. CONSEQUENCES OF PARALYSIS Whether paralysis is temporary or permanent, the affects can be long-term and very serious for both the sufferer and their family. Depending on the type and duration of the paralysis, they can include: Loss of income. Paralysis can leave the sufferer either temporarily or permanently unable to work which can make a great change to the family finances. Loved ones may also have to give up work in order to care for the sufferer, meaning further income is lost at a difficult and costly time. Reliance on carers. As well as loved ones potentially needing to give up work, a nurse or carer may need to be employed to look after the needs of the sufferer. Ongoing hospital treatment or rehabilitation. This can be a huge change for the sufferer as they may find themselves undergoing long-term hospital treatment, physiotherapy or rehabilitation. Lifestyle changes. The alterations to lifestyle arising from paralysis can be enormous. They can include moving house or making renovations to allow for some degree of independent living, buying a new

car that can accommodate a wheelchair, giving up hobbies and interests, and adapting to a whole new way of life. Emotional issues. Enduring paralysis of any kind can have a big impact on the sufferer’s mental health. It’s a huge adjustment, one that can leave emotional scars and mental health problems if the sufferer does not receive appropriate care. The above are some of the more usual consequences, although these can be unique to the sufferer’s personal circumstances. CAN COMPENSATION HELP? Some people believe claiming compensation in these circumstances isn’t worth it because it can’t undo the effects of the paralysis. While that may be true to an extent, compensation can help in other ways, by easing the financial burden of lost income, employing carers and changes to your lifestyle. It can also help pay for the best possible treatment and go some way to alleviating the psychological impact. As this type of personal injury claim can be for a huge sum, a personal injury trust can be used so that the award does not interfere with welfare benefits that the sufferer may well be entitled to. Luke Curran Solicitors in Newry have the experience to offer expert advice to you on your eligibility for your paralysis compensation claim and guide you through the process from start to finish while showing compassion and understanding.
