Your Voice Is Shaping the Future of Beauty Education More than 600 Beauty Advisors and Cosmetic Managers across Canada participated in the 2026 Beauty Advisor Education Insights Survey, sharing what you need to feel knowledgeable, confident and successful in your roles. Your responses delivered a clear message: education matters deeply to you. An overwhelming 97.8% of respondents said ongoing beauty education is essential or important. This finding reinforces something we have always believed at BE Magazine and BeauteSchool: Beauty Advisors and Cosmetic Managers are committed professionals who understand that knowledge directly influences the client experience.

10

11

You do not want less education. You want learning that is relevant, practical and easier to apply on the selling floor.

You also told us what you want to learn. More than 80% of respondents want additional education about ingredients, skin science and skin concerns, while 56% want to strengthen their consultation skills. These areas are closely connected. Understanding ingredients is important, but knowing how to translate that knowledge into a thoughtful recommendation is what brings it to life for the client. Access and time remain significant considerations. While 97.5% of respondents access education online, 76% prefer short online lessons or micro-learning. This does not mean that you want less education. It means education must be relevant, practical and easier to fit into a busy retail environment. You want learning that can be applied immediately at the beauty counter.

12

What Do These Findings Mean for You? First, continue to make learning part of your professional practice. Even 10 or 15 minutes spent strengthening your product, ingredient or consultation knowledge can improve the quality of your client conversations.

including skin care, makeup, fragrance, client service and selling skills. Completing the program also allows Beauty Advisors to earn the Certified Beauty Advisor, or CBA, designation, demonstrating a commitment to professional excellence.

Second, identify your own learning priorities. Consider where greater knowledge would make you feel more confident. Is it understanding active ingredients, recommending products for specific skin concerns, asking better consultation questions or closing a sale?

Most importantly, these findings confirm that your voice matters. You have told the industry what you need. Now, BeauteSchool and BE Magazine will continue sharing your message with vendor brands and retailers while developing education, content and resources that support your success.

For Cosmetic Managers, the findings highlight the importance of creating a learning culture. Encourage your team to share what they learn, discuss new products and ingredients, practise consultation skills and recognize one another’s growth. The Retail Beauty Advisor Certification Program, or RBCP, can also help. Its eight self-paced, brand-neutral courses provide foundational education in areas

As a Beauty Advisor, you do so much more than sell beauty products. You build meaningful trust, guide clients toward solutions for their concerns, and help them feel seen, understood, and confident. With the right education, you can continue to elevate every interaction and bring even greater confidence, care, and expertise to the clients you support.

13

14

Key Takeaways Make learning a regular habit. Even a few minutes of focused learning can strengthen your knowledge and confidence. Focus on practical skills. Ingredient knowledge, skin science, consultation and selling skills can have an immediate impact on the client experience. Identify your learning priorities. Choose the areas where greater knowledge would make the biggest difference in your role. Learn and share as a team. Cosmetic Managers can strengthen performance by creating opportunities for discussion, practice and peer learning. Invest in your professional growth. RBCP provides brand-neutral foundational education and a pathway to earning the CBA designation.

97.8% of Beauty Advisors and Cosmetic Managers say ongoing beauty education is essential or important.

Thank You! To every Beauty Advisor and Cosmetic Manager who participated in the 2026 BE Beauty Advisor Education Insights Survey, thank you for sharing your voice. Your experiences, ideas, and honest feedback are incredibly valuable and will help guide the future of beauty education across Canada. The insights you shared will support the development of more meaningful training, relevant industry content, and education that reflects the realities of working in beauty retail. We are grateful for your time, your expertise, and your commitment to continued learning and growth.

Stories

Why This Editorial Matters Behind every thriving beauty department is a team that brings service, education, energy, and execution together with consistency. Retail Success Stories was created to recognize and celebrate the Beauty Advisors, Beauty Managers, and retail teams shaping meaningful client experiences across Canada. These stories highlight the daily habits, leadership strategies, team culture, vendor partnerships, and client care practices that help beauty departments grow. For the September issue of BE Magazine, this feature highlights the Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique at Masonville Place in London, Ontario, where Beauty Manager Fran Carter and her team have built a highly skilled, collaborative, and education-driven beauty destination. As the store has expanded with new brands, strong event activity, and a competitive retail environment, the team has remained focused on relationships. Their success is built through clear communication, continuous learning, trusted vendor partnerships, and a shared commitment to making every client feel supported. 21

Growing Together at Masonville

Where Education, Partnership, and Client Experience Build Lasting Success At Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique #0764 at Masonville Place, Beauty Manager Fran Carter leads a team whose growth is rooted in people, partnerships, and client experience. The department operates in a busy, high-volume environment with a large team, multiple brand partners, counter managers, demonstrators, launches, and events. Clear expectations and regular communication help everyone stay connected to the same goals. Education is central to the team’s culture. Handson product experiences, ingredient training, vendor education, and peer-to-peer learning give Beauty Advisors the knowledge to ask thoughtful questions, explain recommendations clearly, and create solutions around each client’s needs. The result is a beauty experience that feels knowledgeable, welcoming, energetic, and personal. Clients have access to a broad range of brands while receiving guidance from a team that listens, collaborates, and takes pride in helping people feel confident.

‘‘Education is the foundation of confidence, and confidence is what allows our Beauty Advisors to create meaningful connections with clients.’’ — Fran Carter, Beauty Manager 23

Leading Growth Through People, Partnerships, and Client Experience

Fran Carter

At Masonville Place, Fran Carter leads a large and dynamic beauty team through a period of continued growth. Her leadership approach centres on visible support, clear expectations, continuous education, and strong collaboration with vendor partners. Fran believes every team member should understand how their role contributes to the bigger picture. By combining structure with coaching and ownership, she creates an environment where Beauty Advisors can build confidence, share knowledge, and contribute ideas. Her team’s strength appears in the way they approach client relationships, brand launches, and events. Success is reflected in loyalty, trust, strong partnerships, and a shared commitment to making the Beauty Boutique a destination. Masonville Place has grown significantly over the past few years, with new brands, strong event activity, and a highly competitive beauty environment. What has been most important in leading that growth? Our growth has been driven by three key things: our people, our partnerships, and our client experience. We have built a highly skilled, talented, and motivated team where everyone is invested in the success of the business. Every interaction is an

24

opportunity to build a lasting relationship with a client, and that consistency has helped us earn trust and loyalty within our community. Our vendor partnerships are equally important. Open communication, collaboration, and shared goals allow us to deliver successful launches, meaningful events, and valuable education opportunities for the team. As Masonville has grown and welcomed new brands, we have continued to evolve while staying focused on exceptional client experiences. Our success comes from an engaged team, trusted partners, and a shared commitment to exceeding expectations. You manage a large team in a high-volume store with many vendors, counter managers, events, and demonstrators. How do you keep everyone organized, focused, and working toward the same goals? Managing a large team requires strong communication, clear expectations, and a shared vision. I create structure through regular communication, goal setting, and consistent follow-up so everyone understands their role and how it contributes to our overall success. Leadership also needs to be visible. I spend time on the floor coaching, supporting, and

‘‘Our greatest success comes when everyone is working toward the same goal.’’ — Fran Carter, Beauty Manager

working alongside the team. This allows me to provide real-time feedback, recognize opportunities, and celebrate successes as they happen. Most importantly, we have built a culture of teamwork and accountability. We share knowledge, support one another, and celebrate each other’s wins because our greatest success comes when everyone is working toward the same goal. Education is clearly a major priority for your team. How do you keep Beauty Advisors engaged in training, and how does that knowledge show up in client conversations? Education is the foundation of confidence, and confidence allows our Beauty Advisors to create meaningful connections with clients. My goal is to make learning feel exciting, valuable, and directly connected to what happens on the sales floor. We work closely with vendor partners to provide hands-on training, product demonstrations, ingredient education, and opportunities to experience products firsthand. We also encourage peer-to-peer learning because some of the best education comes from sharing product knowledge and client experiences with one another.

You can see the impact in the way the team approaches consultations. They ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully, and create customized solutions. Clients feel they are receiving expert advice from someone who genuinely understands their needs. What does a successful brand partnership look like in your store, and how does that support both the team and the client experience? A successful brand partnership is built on trust, communication, and a shared commitment to growth. The strongest partnerships bring together the store’s knowledge of its clients with the brand’s expertise, resources, and innovation. We align on business strategies, education, events, and opportunities that support both the brand and the overall Beauty Boutique. When brand partners invest time in our team, that knowledge translates into stronger client conversations and more personalized recommendations.

What makes the beauty experience at Masonville Place stand out for clients? What makes Masonville special is the combination of our passionate team, strong brand partnerships, and commitment to creating meaningful experiences. Our Beauty Advisors take ownership of the business, support one another, and continue to grow their skills. Their product knowledge and ability to personalize recommendations help create exceptional experiences for clients. Our brand partners add education, innovation, and excitement, while our events create opportunities to discover products, meet experts, and build community. The people behind the experience are what make our Beauty Boutique a destination.

When the store and its partners communicate openly and work toward common goals, everyone benefits: our teams, our brands, and most importantly, our clients.

Beauty Advisor Perspectives

‘‘When clients know you are listening and have their best interests in mind, trust develops naturally.’’ — Andreia Parrales Beauty Specialist

26

Nicole Sevier

Kevork Donian

What role does teamwork play during events, busy days, or client consultations?

How do you build trust and continue the client relationships after a recommendation?

Our team has been built over many years, and that history has created strong working relationships and long-standing client connections. We also have newer team members who bring fresh talent and help us connect with new clients.

Trust begins with being genuine and taking the time to explain how a product can support the client’s needs. Offering options at different price points also shows that the recommendation is centred on finding the right solution.

In a high-volume store, we rely on trust. During busy periods, we step in, answer questions, and support one another wherever help is needed. That teamwork helps the department stay organized and allows every client to receive attentive service.

I follow up with clients through Beauty Now a few weeks later to ask how the product is working. This gives me an opportunity to answer questions, share tips, and ensure they are having a positive experience. Follow-up strengthens the relationship and helps clients feel comfortable returning for future guidance.

How does ongoing training help you feel more confident when recommending products or explaining ingredients?

How do you build trust and help clients find the right products for their needs?

Beauty Assistant Manager

Beauty Specialist

Ongoing training allows me to keep building my knowledge of products, ingredients, and how they work. It keeps me informed about launches while also refreshing the foundational knowledge I use every day. Learning from brand experts and hearing different perspectives from colleagues helps me understand how products perform in real life. That knowledge allows me to answer questions and make informed recommendations with confidence.

Beauty Specialist

Beauty Specialist

I always start by listening. I want to understand what the client is looking for, what they have already tried, and what they hope to achieve. After nearly 18 years in beauty, I have learned that people remember how you make them feel. My goal is to educate, be honest, and recommend products I truly believe will work for them. When clients know you are listening and have their best interests in mind, trust develops naturally.

Anusree Parrapur

Beauty Specialist and Cosmetic Merchandiser What makes the beauty experience at Masonville Place special from your perspective? The experience is highly personalized. Shoppers Beauty offers both luxury and everyday options, which allows me to tailor recommendations to each client’s lifestyle and budget. Masonville serves a wide mix of clients, and I enjoy creating a space where people feel comfortable whether they know exactly what they want or are still exploring. That flexibility makes each consultation interesting and personal.

The IDC DERMO Game Changer The skincare truth every Beauty Advisor should know about active ingredients Developed and made in Canada, IDC DERMO combines clinically proven results with high concentrations of carefully selected active ingredients, powered by ReGen16, its Canadian-patented longevity formulation protocol. Its advanced formulas, developed through the Canadian-patented ReGen16 protocol, support a global approach to skin health, skin longevity and visible results, while remaining safe for the skin. For an active ingredient to deliver its full potential, there must be enough of it in the formula. It sounds simple, but it’s a skincare truth many clients do not know. Seeing an impressive ingredient on a package does not tell the whole story. The amount used can make the difference between simply including an active ingredient and using it to deliver maximum results.

That is the IDC DERMO game changer.

31

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

One Formula, More Complete Care

Many skincare products promote proven active ingredients, but the amount included may not always be high enough to deliver maximum results.

IDC DERMO takes its high-concentration philosophy even further with ReGen16, its Canadian-patented longevity formulation protocol.

Think of it like making coffee. You can use the finest coffee beans, but if you do not use enough, the coffee will still be weak. Skincare works in a similar way. A formula may contain an excellent active ingredient, but if there is not enough of it, it will not deliver maximum results for the skin. IDC DERMO takes a different approach. Its formulas contain high concentrations of carefully selected active ingredients, with some formulas containing up to 45% actives. Each ingredient is included at what IDC DERMO calls its ‘‘physiological dose.’’ This means using the right amount to deliver maximum results, while remaining safe for the skin.

Skin doesn’t age in just one way. Many biological mechanisms evolve at the same time. ReGen16 targets 16 key mechanisms involved in skin aging, supporting a more complete approach to skin health, skin longevity and visible correction. IDC DERMO uses high concentrations of proven ingredients for visible results. Its patented ReGen16 protocol targets 16 causes of skin aging simultaneously for more complete care.

This also helps explain the value behind IDC DERMO formulas. Clients are not simply choosing an impressive ingredient list; they are investing in formula quality, clinically relevant active concentrations, skin health and visible performance over time.

How to Explain It to Your Client:

It is not enough for an active ingredient to be present. There must be enough of it to deliver maximum results. 32

‘‘IDC DERMO doesn’t just include proven active ingredients. It uses them at clinically relevant concentrations to deliver visible results, while remaining safe for the skin. Its Canadian-patented ReGen16 protocol targets 16 key causes involved in skin aging, supporting a more complete approach to skin health, skin longevity and visible correction.’’

33

High concentrations. Visible results. More complete care. That is the IDC DERMO difference.

Key Takeaways

34

Concentration is the game changer.

It is not only which active ingredients are included, but whether enough is used to deliver clinical-grade results.

The value is inside the formula.

Each formula reflects carefully selected active ingredients, clinically relevant concentrations and a commitment to skin health and visible performance over time.

ReGen16 supports a more complete approach to skin aging.

This Canadian-patented protocol targets 16 key mechanisms involved in skin aging to help support skin health, skin longevity and visible results.

When Skin Slows Down, ULTIME Steps Up Meet IDC DERMO ULTIME Premium Micro Serum, concentrated care for skin facing hormonal aging and changing needs. As skin ages, including through hormonal changes, it produces fewer essential lipids, renews itself more slowly and may become less responsive to skincare. ULTIME Premium Micro Serum was created for skin that is beginning to ‘‘slow down’’ due to hormonal aging and changing needs over time. At the center of the formula is ReGen16, IDC DERMO’s Canadian-patented longevity formulation protocol, combined with 39% active ingredients, including 10% exclusive OmegaPearl delivery technology.

38

39

40

39% active ingredients for nourished, smoother, firmer and more radiant-looking skin. What Makes It Different? Think of OmegaPearl micro-beads as tiny delivery pearls. They help carry nourishing ingredients through the lipid-rich spaces between skin cells and release them gradually where changing skin needs them. ReGen16 supports a global, multi-mechanism approach to skin aging, while OmegaPearl acts as an exclusive delivery technology. Together, they help support skin health, skin longevity and visible results for skin that needs deeper support.

Key Actives, Visible Results Omegas 3, 6 and 9 and biomimetic oils nourish, strengthen the skin barrier and restore softness. Hyaluronic acid hydrates and visibly plumps. Matrixyl peptide helps smooth wrinkles and support firmness. Vitamin E, chamomile and aloe vera help protect, calm and soothe.

Who Is It For? Recommend ULTIME for clients aged 40+ and those experiencing hormonal skin aging, including perimenopause. Look for dryness, dehydration, dullness, discomfort, reduced firmness or skin that looks tired and less plump. Meet Jennifer, 52. Hormonal changes have left her skin dry, dull and losing firmness, and her usual serum no longer feels like it is working. ULTIME Premium Micro Serum offers the nourishment and deeper support her changing skin needs.

Meet Our Newest Certified Beauty Advisor: Noelia Malvina Rodriguez Rojas’ RBCP® 2.0 Journey

48

Congratulations to Noelia Malvina Rodriguez Rojas, one of BeauteSchool’s newest graduates of the Retail Beauty Advisor Certification Program (RBCP® 2.0). For Noelia, becoming a Certified Beauty Advisor marks an exciting step into a new chapter in beauty. Her journey reflects a lifelong interest in personal care, a strong customer service background, and a desire to build the knowledge and confidence needed to support clients with professionalism and care.

Noelia Malvina Rodriguez Rojas Certified Beauty Advisor (CBA)

What inspired your journey into the beauty industry, and how did it lead you to BeauteSchool and the RBCP® 2.0 program? I have always been interested in beauty. I grew up with my grandmother and aunts, who always presented themselves well, and that captured my curiosity and interest at a young age. I had always treated beauty as a hobby, but recently I decided to pursue it as a career change after working in travel-related customer service. Although esthetician programs were of interest to me, the Beauty Advisor program captured the aspects of beauty I was most passionate about. How has completing the RBCP® 2.0 helped you grow in both skill and confidence? After completing the Beauty Advisor program, I feel confident that I have the knowledge, technique, and practice to provide consultations in several areas of the beauty industry.

The training from this course has provided a strong foundation to build on as the industry evolves. I am eager to continue practicing that training and continue developing product-specific knowledge as my experience grows in this field. What part of the program did you find most valuable or impactful? What I found most impactful through the program was learning the five consultative steps, how to approach clients, and how to provide knowledgeable and professional service. If you know those five steps, you can feel assured that you are providing informative service. I also learned the importance of presenting yourself professionally, bringing a good attitude, and being prepared before starting work. If you had to complete this sentence: ‘‘My purpose in beauty is…’” what would you say?

My purpose in beauty is to provide exceptional client service by giving each client my full attention and ensuring they leave satisfied with the right product for their needs. If you sell them the right products, everything else will follow. Clients will come back because they trust your expertise and care. What message or advice would you share with others who are considering enrolling in RBCP® 2.0? I would tell others that if the beauty industry is your passion, enroll in the program. At the beginning, it might feel long and intimidating, but once you get into the program, you learn one step at a time. As a result, you want to know more, and the program is not as difficult as you thought it would be. Once you finish the program, you will have more than enough knowledge and confidence to provide great advice to clients with any beauty needs. It is worth it!

49

Meet Our Newest Certified Beauty Advisor: Sivkhim Tav’s RBCP® 2.0 Journey

50

Congratulations to Sivkhim Tav, one of BeauteSchool’s newest graduates of the Retail Beauty Advisor Certification Program (RBCP® 2.0). Becoming a Certified Beauty Advisor is a proud achievement that reflects Sivkhim’s commitment to deepening her expertise, strengthening her client consultations, and continuing to grow in an everevolving beauty industry. With over 13 years of experience in the beauty industry, Sivkhim’s journey highlights how passion, advanced product knowledge, and personalized service can strengthen confidence, build client trust, and support long-term career growth in beauty.

Sivkhim Tav Certified Beauty Advisor (CBA) Beauty Specialist, Shoppers Drug Mart #2393 Calgary, Alberta

What inspired your journey into the beauty industry, and how did it lead you to BeauteSchool and the RBCP® 2.0 program? My passion for beauty began with helping people feel confident and beautiful. I have always loved skincare, makeup, and fashion, and I enjoy guiding clients to choose the right products for their needs. Over time, I realized that to truly stand out and grow, I needed stronger knowledge in skincare, ingredients, and advanced consultation skills. That is what led me to BeauteSchool and the RBCP® 2.0 program. I wanted to invest in myself, deepen my expertise, and deliver a higher level of service to my clients.

With this knowledge, I feel much more confident during consultations. I ask the right questions, identify concerns more accurately, and recommend solutions with clarity and professionalism. Clients trust my advice more, which helps me build stronger relationships and loyalty. What part of the program did you find most valuable or impactful in your day-to-day work? The most valuable part of the program was learning how to better understand clients’ needs and recommend personalized solutions.

How has completing the RBCP® 2.0 Certification helped you grow as a Beauty Advisor, in both skill and confidence?

It has also improved my sales performance because I am not just selling products. I am providing real solutions. The certification has given me a stronger foundation to grow within the beauty industry, understand products more deeply, and better support each client.

This program has helped me elevate my skills, confidence, and professionalism.

If you had to complete this sentence: ‘‘My purpose in beauty is…’’ what would you say?

My purpose in beauty is to help people feel confident and beautiful in their own skin by providing the right skincare solutions, personalized service, and honest advice. 52

Congratulations to Aliona Cojocaru, one of BeauteSchool’s newest graduates of the Retail Beauty Advisor Certification Program (RBCP® 2.0). Earning the Certified Beauty Advisor designation represents an important milestone in Aliona’s career and reflects her dedication to continued education, professional growth, and personalized client care. Her journey demonstrates how knowledge, thoughtful communication, and a genuine commitment to helping others can build confidence and create lasting connections at the beauty counter.

Aliona Cojocaru Certified Beauty Advisor (CBA) Beauty Advisor, Shoppers Drug Mart #2326 Calgary, Alberta

What inspired your journey into the beauty industry, and how did it lead you to BeauteSchool and the RBCP® 2.0 program? My journey in the beauty industry began in 2011. What initially started as a necessity soon became something much more meaningful. Over the years, I discovered that beauty is about connection, confidence, and helping people feel their best. From the beginning, I enjoyed taking the time to understand each client’s unique needs and recommending products that could make a difference in their daily routines. Some of the most rewarding moments are when clients return and share how much they loved the products I recommended. Knowing that my guidance helped someone feel more confident continues to inspire me. For more than a decade, I have worked in beauty part-time while balancing a full-time career. Throughout that time, I have remained passionate about learning, growing, and keeping up with new trends, innovations, and product knowledge. I discovered RBCP® 2.0 through BE Magazine after participating in the

September 2025 “Ask Me Anything About Beauty” feature. The experience introduced me to BeauteSchool and the certification program, and I saw it as an exciting next step in my growth as a Beauty Advisor. How has completing the RBCP® 2.0 Certification helped you grow as a Beauty Advisor, in both skill and confidence? Completing the RBCP® 2.0 Certification has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The program deepened my understanding of skin health, ingredients, and how to create more effective recommendations based on each client’s individual concerns and goals. With this knowledge, I feel more confident during consultations and better equipped to explain the reasoning behind my recommendations. What part of the program did you find most valuable or impactful in your dayto-day work? One of the most valuable lessons was learning to focus on the person behind the purchase. Every client has a unique story, and understanding their needs allows me to create a more personalized, supportive, and meaningful beauty experience.

If you had to complete this sentence: ‘‘My purpose in beauty is…’” what would you say? My purpose in beauty is to make people feel valued, confident, and cared for. I believe beauty is built through trust and connection, and sometimes a simple conversation or thoughtful recommendation can help someone feel truly seen. What message or advice would you share with other Beauty Advisors who are considering enrolling in RBCP® 2.0? My advice is to embrace the opportunity to learn and invest in yourself. The beauty industry is always evolving, and continuing to expand your knowledge allows you to grow alongside it. RBCP® 2.0 provides valuable tools, new perspectives, and the confidence to create even stronger connections with clients. Growth is a lifelong journey, and every new skill we gain helps us make a greater impact through the beauty experiences we create. I am proud to be part of an inspiring community that celebrates growth, passion, and helping others feel their best.

53

Meet Our Newest Certified Beauty Advisor: Delaram Piri’s RBCP® 2.0 Journey

54

Congratulations to Delaram Piri, one of BeauteSchool’s newest graduates of the Retail Beauty Advisor Certification Program (RBCP® 2.0). Earning the Certified Beauty Advisor designation represents a meaningful milestone, reflecting dedication to professional growth, client care, and continued education. Delaram’s journey highlights how strong communication, product knowledge, and a genuine love for helping people can build confidence and create more meaningful client experiences on the sales floor.

Delaram Piri Certified Beauty Advisor (CBA) Beauty Advisor, Shoppers Drug Mart #2393 Calgary, Alberta

What inspired your journey into the beauty industry, and how did it lead you to BeauteSchool and the RBCP® 2.0 program?

The certification gave me more confidence in recommending products and explaining why they are suitable for different skin types and concerns.

I have always loved working with people. Every day, I meet clients from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds, and I enjoy connecting with each of them.

I feel more comfortable answering clients’ questions and providing personalized recommendations based on their needs.

What inspires me most is helping someone find the right product and seeing them come back happy because it worked for them. When my manager introduced our team to BeauteSchool and the RBCP® 2.0 program, I saw it as a great opportunity to improve my knowledge and better support my clients. How has completing the RBCP® 2.0 Certification helped you grow as a Beauty Advisor, in both skill and confidence?

What part of the program did you find most valuable or impactful in your dayto-day work? The most valuable part was learning how to communicate with different types of clients. Not every client is the same, and sometimes the most challenging conversations become the most rewarding. The program also expanded my product knowledge, which helps me make recommendations with greater confidence.

If you had to complete this sentence: ‘‘My purpose in beauty is…’” what would you say? My purpose in beauty is to help people feel confident, respected, and happy by giving honest advice and recommending products that truly meet their needs. What message or advice would you share with other Beauty Advisors who are considering enrolling in RBCP® 2.0? I would definitely recommend the program. It helped me build confidence, improve my communication skills, and increase my product knowledge. Cosmetic Career Spotlight By Mickey Tortorelli

Veronic Lefebvre Regional Sales Manager, Quebec Groupe Marcelle Cosmetics Beauty has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. What began as a fascination with beauty counters, products, and trends evolved into a career spanning more than two decades in an industry that I truly love. Throughout my journey, I have had the privilege of working with prestigious brands, building meaningful partnerships, developing talented teams, and contributing to the growth of iconic Canadian beauty brands. Today, as Regional Sales Manager for Quebec at Groupe Marcelle, I remain as passionate as ever about people, beauty, leadership, and helping others succeed.

66

‘‘Beauty is about much more than products; it is about self-expression, confidence, and connection.’’

67

Discover the Journeys of Beauty Industry Trailblazers

Veronic Lefebvre Can you share a little about your career journey in the beauty industry and what led you to your current role with Groupe Marcelle?

What first inspired you to build a career in beauty, and what has kept you passionate about the industry over the years?

My passion for beauty led me to pursue a career in the industry at an early age. After studying Aesthetics and Artistic Makeup at LaSalle College, I began my career as a Beauty Advisor for prestigious brands including Lancôme, Estée Lauder, and Clinique.

My greatest inspiration has always been my mother. She is elegant, confident, and always beautifully put together, and she continues to inspire me today. From a very young age, I was fascinated by beauty and loved exploring her makeup collection.

These early experiences allowed me to develop strong product knowledge, a customer-first mindset, and a deep appreciation for the confidence that beauty can inspire.

Being born under the sign of Libra, I have always been naturally drawn to beauty, fashion, art, elegance, and creativity.

At the age of 26, I transitioned into the field side of the business as a Sales Representative for brands such as Orlane, Phyto, Lierac, and Cover FX. I later joined Dior as an Account Executive, where I gained valuable experience in sales, business development, retailer partnerships, and leadership for Sephora, Holt Renfrew and Shoppers Drug Mart. For the past 12 years, I have proudly been part of Groupe Marcelle, including the last 10 years as Regional Sales Manager for Quebec. What attracted me to Groupe Marcelle was not only its portfolio of iconic Canadian brands, but also its entrepreneurial spirit and culture of innovation.

68

As a young girl, I was fascinated by cosmetic departments and beauty counters and loved visiting stores such as Ogilvy, Holt Renfrew, and Eaton to discover the latest product launches, trends, and innovations. Those experiences sparked a passion that has stayed with me throughout my life and career. What has kept me passionate over the years is the ability to help people feel confident and empowered. Beauty is about much more than products; it is about selfexpression, confidence, and connection. I have always admired women who embody timeless elegance and confidence. Monica Bellucci and Sofia Loren have long been beauty icons for me because of their sophistication, authenticity, and classic beauty.

I have always admired the remarkable journey of Madame Lise Watier, whose vision and determination helped build one of Canada’s most respected beauty companies.

Professionally, I continue to be inspired by the leadership team at Groupe Marcelle and by the passion that exists throughout the organization.

One of my greatest strengths is my deep understanding of the Quebec market and the strong business relationships I have built throughout my career.

I am particularly inspired by our Marketing teams, who are constantly exploring new trends and opportunities and helping keep our brands relevant in an ever-evolving industry.

Staying connected to the field, working alongside my team, and maintaining close partnerships with our retail customers have all contributed to my growth as a leader and ultimately led me to the role I am fortunate to hold today.

Most importantly, my team inspires me every day. Watching people grow, build confidence, and achieve their goals is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. Being part of a company that continues to innovate, evolve, and inspire consumers is something I am extremely proud of, and it is what motivates me every day.

‘‘Leadership is not about having all the answers; it is about helping others succeed.’’

69

‘‘After all these years in beauty, one thing I know for sure is that people make the difference.’’

70

As Regional Manager for Quebec, how would you describe your role and the impact you have on the success of Groupe Marcelle’s brands in the market?

You lead and support a team of Sales and Education Executives. How do you coach your team to stay focused, motivated, and confident in their roles?

My role is to lead, coach, and support a talented team while building strong partnerships with our retail customers across Quebec. I serve as a link between strategy and execution, ensuring our brands remain visible, relevant, and successful in the marketplace.

I believe leadership begins with trust, communication, and support. I take the time to understand each team member’s strengths, aspirations, and motivations so that I can adapt my coaching approach to their individual needs.

One of the things I enjoy most about my role is being in the field. I truly believe that staying close to the business is what makes the difference.

I focus on collaboration, continuous learning, recognition, and empowerment. When people feel supported, valued, and trusted, they are more confident in their abilities and motivated to achieve their goals.

By working alongside my team, visiting stores, and meeting regularly with our retail partners, I remain connected to the realities of the market and can quickly identify opportunities for growth. My deep knowledge of the Quebec market, combined with a hands-on leadership approach, allows me to support my team effectively, strengthen customer relationships, and contribute to the continued success of Groupe Marcelle’s brands across the province. What do you believe are the most important qualities of a successful Regional Manager in today’s beauty retail environment? I believe a successful Regional Manager must be adaptable, authentic, resilient, and people-focused. Strong communication skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to build meaningful relationships are essential. Today’s leaders must know how to balance business objectives with the development and well-being of their teams. Most importantly, they need to stay connected to the field, lead by example, and remain open to change in an ever-evolving retail environment.

Looking back on your career, what advice would you give to someone who wants to grow into a leadership role in the beauty industry? Stay curious, work hard, and never stop learning. Every experience, whether behind a beauty counter, in the field, or in a leadership role, teaches valuable lessons that will help you grow. Build strong relationships, seek mentors, remain open to feedback, and embrace opportunities outside of your comfort zone. Most importantly, stay authentic. Leadership is not about having all the answers; it is about helping others succeed. What does success mean to you at this stage of your career? Today, success is measured less by titles and more by impact. Seeing members of my team grow professionally, gain confidence, achieve their goals, and advance in their careers is one of the most rewarding parts of my role. Success also means building lasting partnerships, contributing to the growth of our brands, and continuing to make a positive impact on the people around me. If my team succeeds, our retail partners succeed, and our brands continue to thrive, then I consider that a true success.

To all the women reading this, believe in yourself and never underestimate your potential. Stay curious, embrace every opportunity to learn, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The beauty industry offers incredible opportunities for growth, leadership, and connection. Work hard, stay authentic, build meaningful relationships, and always lead with kindness. After all these years in beauty, one thing I know for sure is that people make the difference. The impact you have on others and the confidence you help them discover is the most beautiful part of the journey. Most importantly, stay true to who you are and enjoy the journey.

Skin Physiology: By Mickey Tortorelli

82

The Beauty Advisor’s Foundation for Confident Consultations 83

Every confident skincare recommendation begins with one thing: understanding the skin. Before a Beauty Advisor recommends a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, exfoliant, sunscreen, or treatment, it helps to know what is happening underneath the surface. Skin concerns do not appear randomly. Dryness, sensitivity, dullness, fine lines, uneven tone, oiliness, breakouts, and loss of firmness are all connected to how the skin functions. Skin physiology may sound complex, but the foundation is simple: the skin is a living organ made of layers, cells, proteins, glands, and immune functions that all work together to protect the body and keep the skin healthy. For Beauty Advisors, this knowledge turns product recommendations into meaningful consultations.

The Skin Has Three Main Layers The skin is made of three main layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. Each layer plays a different role in how the skin looks, feels, and behaves and changes with aging. The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin. This is the layer clients can see and touch. It acts like the skin’s protective shield, helping defend against moisture loss, environmental stress, UV exposure, bacteria, and irritation. The dermis sits underneath the epidermis. This is where many of the skin’s support systems live, including collagen, elastin, blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, oil glands, and fibroblasts. The dermis is closely connected to firmness, bounce, strength, and visible aging. The hypodermis, also called the subcutaneous layer, is the deepest layer. It contains fat and connective tissue that help cushion, insulate, and support the skin. A simple way to explain this to your clients is: ‘‘Think of the skin like a house. The epidermis is the roof and outer walls that protect it, the dermis is the structure that gives it strength and support, and the hypodermis is the cushion underneath.’’

When you understand the skin, you can better understand the client’s concern, choose ingredients with purpose, and explain your recommendation with confidence. 84

85

The Skin Cells Beauty Advisors Should Know You do not need to memorize every cell in the skin to give a great consultation. But there are a few key cells that help explain many common skin concerns.

Keratinocytes are the main cells in the epidermis. They help form the skin barrier and produce keratin, a protein that helps keep the skin strong and protected.

86

Melanocytes are pigmentproducing cells found in the lower part of the epidermis. They produce melanin, which gives skin its colour and helps protect it from UV exposure.

When the barrier is healthy, skin often feels smoother, more comfortable, and less reactive. When the barrier is weakened, clients may notice dryness, tightness, flaking, redness, or sensitivity.

When melanocytes become overactive or unevenly stimulated, clients may notice dark spots, uneven tone, post-breakout marks, or sun damage.

Ingredients that support this area include ceramides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol, and gentle moisturizers designed for barrier support.

Ingredients often used for tone and brightness include vitamin C, niacinamide, retinol, exfoliating acids, licorice extract, azelaic acid, and daily SPF.

Langerhans cells are part of the skin’s immune defence system. They help recognize when something may be irritating or harmful to the skin. When the skin is stressed, over-exfoliated, sensitized, or exposed to harsh conditions, the immune response can show up as redness, irritation, discomfort, or reactivity. Ingredients often found in calming or sensitive-skin formulas include ceramides, niacinamide, panthenol, colloidal oatmeal, allantoin, centella asiatica, and fragrance-free moisturizers.

Fibroblasts are found in the dermis. They are the cells responsible for producing important support proteins like collagen and elastin. When clients talk about firmness, wrinkles, skin bounce, or loss of structure, fibroblasts are part of that conversation. Ingredients commonly connected to firmness and visible aging include retinol, peptides, vitamin C, antioxidants, and SPF.

Collagen and Elastin: The Skin’s Support System Collagen and elastin are two of the most important proteins in the dermis.

A simple way to explain this to your clients is: ‘‘Collagen is like the support system, and elastin is like the bounce. When both are strong, skin looks firmer, smoother, and more resilient.’’

Collagen gives skin strength and structure. Think of it like the framework that helps keep skin looking firm and supported. Elastin gives skin flexibility and bounce. Think of it like a spring that helps skin return to shape after movement. As skin ages, and as it is exposed to UV rays, pollution, stress, and lifestyle factors, collagen and elastin can become weaker. This may appear as fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, crepiness, or a loss of firmness.

87

88

How This Helps With Client Consultations

Active Ingredients Through a Skin Physiology Lens

Skin physiology becomes useful when you connect it to what the client is saying.

When recommending active ingredients, think about the skin concern first, then the cell or structure involved.

If a client says,

For barrier support, focus on the epidermis and keratinocytes. Look for ceramides, niacinamide, panthenol, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and gentle moisturizers.

‘‘My skin feels tight and irritated,’’ you may think about the skin barrier, keratinocytes, and barrier-supporting ingredients. If a client says,

For dark spots and uneven tone, focus on melanocytes and pigment pathways. Look for vitamin C, niacinamide, exfoliating acids, retinol, azelaic acid, licorice extract, and SPF.

‘‘I have dark spots from summer,’’ you may think about melanocytes, uneven pigment, antioxidants, brightening ingredients, exfoliation, and SPF. If a client says, ‘‘My skin is starting to sag or look less firm,’’ you may think about fibroblasts, collagen, elastin, peptides, retinol, vitamin C, and SPF.

For fine lines and firmness, focus on fibroblasts, collagen, and elastin. Look for retinol, peptides, vitamin C, antioxidants, and daily SPF. For sensitivity and reactivity, focus on barrier support and calming the look of irritation. Look for ceramides, niacinamide, panthenol, colloidal oatmeal, allantoin, centella asiatica, and fragrance-free formulas. For dullness and texture, focus on cell turnover at the surface. Look for AHAs, BHAs, PHAs, enzymes, retinol, hydration, and SPF.

If a client says, ‘‘My skin reacts to everything,’’

The Consultation Question That Changes Everything

you may think about barrier health, Langerhans cells, calming ingredients, gentle formulas, and reducing irritation.

A helpful question to ask your client is:

This is where learning becomes leadership. A strong Beauty Advisor listens to the concern, understands what may be happening in the skin, and recommends products with purpose.

This opens the door to a better consultation. The client may say their skin feels dry, looks dull, reacts easily, has uneven tone, or is losing firmness.

‘‘What is your skin doing that you would like to improve?’’

From there, the Beauty Advisor can connect the concern to the skin’s structure and recommend ingredients with intention. That is the heart of the September theme: Confidence at the Counter. Knowledge gives Beauty Advisors the confidence to explain, guide, and lead.

89

Key Takeaways

The epidermis protects, the dermis supports, and the hypodermis cushions. Understanding these layers helps Beauty Advisors connect skin concerns to the right product recommendations.

Key skin cells, including keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhans cells, and fibroblasts, help explain common concerns like dryness, sensitivity, uneven tone, and loss of firmness.

Ingredient knowledge becomes more powerful when it is connected to skin physiology. The strongest recommendations begin with understanding what the client’s skin is doing and what support it needs.

Build Your Skin Care Knowledge with RBCP® Explore skin physiology, common skin concerns, ingredients, product categories, and consultation techniques in the RBCP® Skin Care course. This foundational education will help you make more informed recommendations, clearly explain how products support the skin, and approach every client consultation with greater confidence.

The Power of Peptides By Mickey Tortorelli

Peptides are having a major moment in skincare, and for good reason. They appear on serums, moisturizers, eye creams, masks, and even lip products, often alongside claims like ‘‘firming,’’ ‘‘plumping,’’ ‘‘barrier support,’’ and ‘‘skin renewal.’’ But at the counter, the real opportunity is not just knowing that peptides are popular. It is knowing how to explain them clearly, connect them to a client’s concern, and recommend them with confidence. Peptides are short chains of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins in the skin, including collagen, elastin, and keratin. These proteins help give skin its structure, firmness, smoothness, and resilience. In skincare, peptides are used to help support the skin’s natural repair processes, improve the look of firmness, soften the appearance of fine lines, and strengthen the skin barrier over time. Think of peptides like tiny text messages to your skin. They help send the signal to support the things skin naturally needs, like firmness, smoothness, hydration, and repair. They will not change the skin overnight, but with consistent use, they can help skin look stronger, plumper, and more resilient. For Beauty Advisors, peptides are a great ingredient to understand because they are approachable, versatile, and often well tolerated. 100

They can be recommended to clients who are noticing early signs of aging, dullness, loss of firmness, dryness, or skin that feels less resilient after summer.

Peptides are most often used in skincare to support:

With peptides gaining popularity on social media, more clients may be walking into the store already asking for them by name. This creates a valuable opportunity to move beyond the trend and help the client understand whether peptides are the right fit for their skin.

Fine lines and wrinkles Loss of firmness Dryness or dehydration

Start with a consultation. Ask how their skin feels, what concerns they have noticed, what products they currently use, and what they would like their skincare regimen to achieve.

A weakened skin barrier Dull or tired-looking skin Skin that feels less smooth or less plump Visible signs of environmental stress

A client may benefit from a peptide-based product if they say: ‘‘My skin feels like it has lost its bounce.’’ ‘‘I’m starting to notice fine lines.’’

Peptides are not an instant-fix ingredient. They work best with consistent use, especially in leave-on products such as serums, moisturizers, and eye creams. A client may not see a dramatic overnight change, but with regular use, peptides can help the skin look smoother, stronger, firmer, and more hydrated.

‘‘My skin looks tired after the summer.’’

This makes them an ideal recommendation for the fall season. After summer, many clients come in noticing that their skin feels dry, uneven, or depleted from sun exposure, heat, air conditioning, travel, and changes in routine. Peptides can help support a more resilient barrier and bring comfort back to skin that feels tired or stressed.

‘‘My skin feels dry and less firm.’’

‘‘I want something for visible signs of aging, but I do not want anything too harsh.’”

‘‘I want to start taking better care of my skin, but I am not ready for retinol.’’ ‘‘My moisturizer is not doing enough anymore.’’ ‘‘I want my skin to look smoother and healthier.’’ This is where ingredient education becomes leadership. A knowledgeable Beauty Advisor can connect the client’s concerns and goals to the benefits of peptides, while also setting realistic expectations around consistent use. A helpful way to explain peptides at the counter: ‘‘Peptides can be a great option if you are noticing dryness, fine lines, or a loss of firmness. They help support the skin’s structure and barrier over time, helping the skin look smoother, stronger, and more resilient with consistent use.’’

102

103

What Skin Types Are Peptides Best For?

As always, the full formula matters. A peptide product may also include ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramides, antioxidants, or retinol.

One of the benefits of peptides is that they can work well for many skin types.

Beauty Advisors should look at the whole product, not just the hero ingredient, when deciding if it is right for the client. And of course, based on your consultation with your client, you’ll be able to recommend the right combination of ingredients that will provide the results your client is looking for.

For dry skin: Peptides are often found in richer creams and hydrating serums that help support comfort and softness. For mature skin: Peptides can help improve the look of firmness, fine lines, and skin resilience.

For sensitive skin: Peptides may be a good option because they are often less irritating than stronger active ingredients, depending on the formula.

104

For combination or oily skin: Lighter peptide serums or gelcreams can provide support without feeling too heavy.

How Do You Use Peptides? Peptides are most effective in leave-on products because they need time on the skin. Look for them in serums, moisturizers, eye creams, and targeted treatments.

A simple routine could look like this:

Cleanser

Hydrating toner or essence, if used

Peptide serum

Moisturizer

Sunscreen

105

Peptides and Fall Skin Fall is a natural time to talk about peptides because many clients are transitioning out of summer skincare regimen. After months of sun exposure, heat, humidity, swimming, travel, the skin may feel dry, dull, tight, or appear less even textured. Peptides can be positioned as part of a fall reset. For clients who are not ready for stronger actives, peptides can feel like a comfortable first step. For clients already using actives, they can help round out the routine with barrier-supporting care.

Key Takeaways Peptides help support the skin’s structure, firmness, and resilience, making them a strong option for clients concerned with fine lines, loss of firmness, dryness, or tired-looking skin. Peptides are best used consistently in leave-on products like serums, moisturizers, and eye creams, and they often pair well with hydrating and barrier-supporting ingredients. Fall is an ideal time to recommend peptides because many clients are looking to repair, replenish, and strengthen their skin after summer sun exposure and seasonal changes.

Fall Consultatio Confidence: By Mickey Tortorelli

108

on 5 Questions That Lead to Better Skin Care Recommendations In our recent BA Education Insights Survey, Beauty Advisors identified skin care consultations as an area where they would like more education and support. In this editorial, you’ll learn how to make each consultation meaningful and be able to uncover exactly what your client needs. Fall offers the perfect opportunity to strengthen your consultation skills. As the season changes, so do skin care needs. Cooler weather, indoor heating, shifting routines, and the return to busy schedules can all affect how skin looks and feels. A strong consultation begins with curiosity. Before recommending a product, Beauty Advisors need to understand what the client is experiencing, what they are currently using, and what they hope to improve. Confidence at the counter is built through education, but it is expressed through the way a Beauty Advisor leads the conversation, asks thoughtful questions, listens carefully, and turns knowledge into recommendations a client can trust.

109

The 5 E’s of a Successful Sale The Retail Beauty Advisor Certification Program® (RBCP) Customer Service Experience course outlines the e5 Steps to a Successful Sale: Engage, Explore, Educate, Enrich, and Enhance. Together, these steps help Beauty Advisors create a more personalized and professional client experience. For a fall skin care consultation, the Explore step is especially important. This is where the right, open-ended questions can reveal whether a client’s skin is feeling tighter, looks duller, is becoming more sensitive, or reacting differently than it did during the summer months. Skin care recommendations should reflect what is happening in the client’s life and on their skin. The RBCP® Skin Care course identifies internal factors such as diet, sleep, exercise, stress, hormones, and lifestyle, as well as external factors such as climate, pollution, sun exposure, and skin care products. In the fall, many of these factors can shift at once.

5 Fall Consultation Questions to Ask at the Counter

1

How has your skin been feeling since the weather started to change? This question opens the conversation in a seasonal, natural way. It helps the client think about recent changes in comfort, texture, oiliness, dryness, sensitivity, or tightness. The RBCP® Skin Care course recommends asking how the skin feels first thing in the morning and at the end of the day. These questions can help identify whether the skin feels tight and itchy, greasy and shiny, comfortable, or oily in the T-zone but dry or comfortable on the cheeks.

110

2

What are you currently using in your morning and evening skincare routine?

3

What is your biggest s concern right now?

A recommendation is more helpful when it builds from what the client is already doing. This question allows the Beauty Advisor to understand the client’s cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, eye product, SPF, exfoliator, mask, or treatment use.

This question helps foc consultation. It helps to common skin concerns lines and wrinkles, hyp loss of elasticity, puffin dehydration, sensitivity complexion.

It also helps identify gaps. A client may be using a cleanser that leaves the skin feeling tight, exfoliating too often, skipping moisturizer, or using the same lightweight products they relied on during the summer.

In fall, clients may be e on dullness, dehydratio texture, or visible signs exposure. Asking the cl their top concern helps Advisor avoid overwhel keeps the recommenda focused on what’s mos the client.

4

How do you want your skin to look and feel?

5

Would you prefer a simple seasonal change or a more complete regimen update for the fall?

This question moves the conversation from concern to goal. A client may say they want their skin to feel more comfortable, look brighter, feel smoother under makeup, or appear more hydrated.

This question helps personalize the final recommendation. Some clients may only need one adjustment, such as a richer moisturizer, a hydrating serum, or a gentler cleanser. Others may be ready to build a more complete routine.

These answers help the Beauty Advisor recommend benefits, not just features. The RBCP® Customer Service Experience course explains that features are the unique selling points of a product, while benefits are the results those features deliver for the client.

This also supports the Enrich step of the 5 E’s. Once the client agrees to a recommendation, the Beauty Advisor can introduce complementary products in a logical way that adds value to the original recommendation. The complementary products you recommend should directly connect to your clients needs based on your consultation.

A confident recommendation links the product back to what the client wants to see, feel, or improve.

For example, a client looking for more hydration may benefit from a cleanser that does not leave the skin feeling tight, a serum that targets dehydration, and a moisturizer that supports comfort.

111

From Questions to Confidence The best fall consultations feel personal, helpful, and easy to follow. When Beauty Advisors ask the right questions, they can better understand the client’s current routine, identify what has changed, and recommend products that make sense for the season. This is where learning becomes leadership. A Beauty Advisor who understands skin care, listens with purpose, and uses a structured consultation approach which guides clients with more confidence and trust at every step of the conversation.

Key Takeaways 1.

Fall is a natural time to revisit skin care routines. Seasonal changes can affect how skin looks and feels, creating an opportunity for Beauty Advisors to check in and guide clients toward the right updates.

2. Strong consultations start with the right questions. Use open-ended questions to learn about how your clients’ skin feels, current routine, concerns, and goals. This will help you make more personalized, relevant recommendations. 3. The 5 E’s turn product knowledge into client confidence. Engage, Explore, Educate, Enrich, and Enhance give Beauty Advisors a clear structure to lead the consultation with skill and purpose.

The RBCP® helps Beauty Advisors build the knowledge and selling skills needed to lead more effective consultations, strengthen client trust, and turn product recommendations into personalized solutions. Fall Makeup Trends: By Mickey Tortorelli

Clean Skin, Smudged Eyes, and Blurred Lips Fall makeup is moving in a polished, expressive direction, with three key trends leading the season: clean skin, smoky smudged eyes, and blurred lips. Together, these looks feel modern, wearable, and easy to personalize at the counter. For Beauty Advisors, the opportunity is to help clients translate these trends into a routine that fits their features, comfort level, and lifestyle. This is where confidence at the counter comes to life: through knowledge, consultation, and the ability to recommend with purpose.

116

117

‘‘Fresh, even-looking skin with coverage and finish tailored to the client.’’

118

Clean Skin Clean skin is the foundation of fall makeup. The look is fresh, even, and refined, allowing the rest of the makeup to stand out. For some clients, this may mean a sheer foundation and concealer. For others, it may mean a more perfected complexion with primer, foundation, powder, and setting spray. The RBCP® Makeup Course reminds Beauty Advisors to consider coverage, finish, and formula when choosing foundation, including sheer, medium, full, or total coverage; matte, natural, or dewy finishes; and liquid, cream, or powder formulas.

Ask: ‘‘For fall, do you want your skin to look natural, radiant, matte, or more perfected?’’

119

“Softly blended liner and shadow that create wearable, lived-in definition.”

120

Smoky, Smudged Eyes The smoky eye returns this season with a softer, smudged effect. Instead of a sharp or overly structured look, fall’s smoky eye feels blended, lived-in, and wearable. A soft pencil along the lash line, a deep shadow close to the eye, or a touch of liner at the root of the lashes can create instant definition. The RBCP® Makeup Course teaches that light colours highlight and bring features forward, while dark colours create depth and make features recede. Matte shades absorb light, while shimmer highlights. This helps Beauty Advisors guide clients toward the right depth, texture, and placement.

Ask: ‘‘Would you like your eyes to look softly defined, smoky, or more dramatic for fall?’’

121

122

Blurred Lips Blurred lips bring colour in a softer, more effortless way. Berry, red, plum, and wine tones can be pressed into the lips for a diffused finish, or layered with balm or gloss for a more comfortable everyday look. The RBCP® Makeup Course notes that lipstick adds definition and polish, lip gloss adds colour and shine, lip oil hydrates, and lip liner shapes, balances, and helps prevent feathering. It also highlights that mid-berry tones flatter most people.

“Diffused lip colour with softly blended edges for an effortless finish.”

Ask: ‘‘Would you like your lip colour to feel bold, polished, soft, or easy for everyday?’’

123

This fall, makeup newness is about helping clients find the version of each trend that feels right for them. With the right questions and the right technique, Beauty Advisors can turn clean skin, smudged eyes, and blurred lips into confident, clientready recommendations.

Build your confidence at the counter with the RBCP® Makeup course. Strengthen your understanding of colour theory, complexion matching, eye makeup, lip techniques, and client consultation skills so you can turn seasonal trends into personalized, client-ready recommendations. 124

Eye Maxing: By Mickey Tortorelli

126

The Art of Enhancing Eye Colour 127

A new makeup trend is catching attention across TikTok and Instagram but the technique behind it has been part of professional makeup artistry for years. Known as ‘‘eye maxing,’”the trend uses colour theory, product choice and strategic placement to enhance the natural colour and shape of the eyes.

The RBCP® Makeup course teaches that orange is complementary to blue, making shades such as copper, bronze, terracotta, rust and warm brown especially effective for blue eyes.

128

Red is complementary to green, so plum, burgundy, lavender, eggplant and reddishbronze shades can help green or hazel eyes stand out.

Brown eyes work beautif range of colours, giving experiment with shades purple, green and metall

For Beauty Advisors, eye maxing offers an easy way to turn a social media trend into an educational and personalized client experience. The first step is identifying which feature the client would like to emphasize. Are they hoping to make blue eyes appear brighter, bring out the green in hazel eyes or add contrast to brown eyes? From there, the colour wheel can guide the recommendation. Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, creating contrast when placed side by side.

fully with a wide clients room to s such as blue, lic tones.

Eye maxing can extend beyond eyeshadow. Coloured mascara, eyeliner and shimmer can introduce contrast in subtle or expressive ways.

Placement also matters: light and shimmery shades bring an area forward, while dark and matte shades create depth and definition.

129

During a consultation, ask which colours your client currently wears, how dramatic they want the result to feel and which part of their eyes they would like to emphasize. A quick demonstration with two complementary shades can make the colour theory visible and help the client feel confident recreating the look at home.

130

Key Takeaways

Use complementary colours to enhance the client’s natural eye colour.

Consider eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, finish and placement together.

Personalize the recommendation around the client’s style and desired result.

Build Your Makeup Expertise Explore colour theory, eye makeup techniques, product selection and personalized consultations in the RBCP® Makeup course. Strengthen the skills behind today’s trends and bring more confident, informed recommendations to every client conversation. 131

Confidence Is Built:

134

By Alexandra Duz (She/Her) MA, Registered Psychotherapist duzalexandra@gmail.com

Practical Skills for Growing in Your Career 135

Here are the guidelines for Building Mastery:

Have you heard of imposter syndrome? It’s a popular term that describes the feeling of being in a position we do not feel equipped for, yet qualified for. This paradox can be troubling for many new professionals and can come with feelings of insecurity, guilt, and anxiety. In my experience, it is a term that describes a lack of confidence in one’s abilities or skills. Many beginners describe feeling imposter syndrome when they’re entering the workforce and are still finding their sea legs - they are technically qualified to do their job, but are green in experience, practice, and expertise. They may be well versed in the basics, but have yet to learn more complex concepts or practice skills long enough to feel as though they belong in their position. Feeling confident in the workplace is something that is learned and earned, through ongoing exposure to education, experiences, and enforced through repetition. Confidence is not something we are born with. It requires supportive environmental conditions, an intentional mind set, and a plan for professional development. From a neuroscientific perspective, we accumulate positive emotions and feelings of confidence and security when we challenge ourselves to do hard, yet achievable things on a consistent basis. These skills are then reinforced through repetition and exposure, and in time, relaying information and practicing certain skills begins to feel as natural as breathing. The two techniques that can apply to confidence building come from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, a skills based modality, are called Building Mastery and Coping Ahead.

136

1

Plan on doing at least one thing each day to build a sense of accomplishment. For example, challenge yourself to learn about one skincare ingredient each day.

2

Plan for success, not failure. Do something difficult but possible. Confidence is built through hard work and accomplishment.

3

Gradually increase the difficulty of your challenge over time. Confidence will plateau if our learning becomes stagnant. Try to challenge yourself based on your evolving skill level.

4

Look for a challenge. If the task is too easy, try something harder next time. And remember, challenges are based on the capacity you have on any given day. Some days a challenge might feel hard, and the next, the same task may feel easy. Allow yourself to be flexible, yet consistent.

137

138

Here are the guidelines for Coping Ahead:

The next technique is called Coping Ahead. This technique involves visualizing challenging experiences, and rehearsing how you will cope and perform. Our brain and body register this type of practice similarly to lived experience, making mental rehearsing an invaluable and accessible part of our professional development.

1

Describe the situation that is likely to prompt feelings of insecurity. Make sure you check the facts and be specific in describing the situation. Name the emotions and actions likely to interfere with using your skills and showing up confidently.

2

Decide what problem solving skills or customer service skills you would want to use in this situation. Be specific. Write out in detail how you will behave, what you could say, and how you plan to cope with your uncomfortable emotions and unwanted behaviours.

3

Imagine the situation in your mind as vividly as possible. Imagine yourself going through the situation NOW, not watching the situation.

4

Mentally rehearse coping effectively and confidently. Rehearse in your mind exactly what you can do to perform well. Rehearse your actions, thoughts, what you’d say and how you’d say it. Rehearse yourself coping effectively with new problems that come up. And most importantly, rehearse coping effectively with your most feared scenario.

5

Lastly, practice some relaxation tools after rehearsing to help your system feel safe and calm. I hope these skills, alongside opportunities for education and a supportive environment help you feel a little more confident as you find your roots in your profession and beyond!

Hair, Cancer & Care By Mickey Tortorelli

Supporting Clients Through Hair Loss and Scalp Changes In the Skin, Cancer & Care series, we have explored how cancer and its treatments can affect the skin, sun sensitivity, comfort, and confidence. This editorial turns to hair, scalp care, wigs, and head coverings, because treatmentrelated hair loss can be one of the most emotional and visible changes a client may experience. For Beauty Advisors, this conversation calls for sensitivity, respect, and care. You are not expected to provide medical advice.

Your role is to listen, offer practical beauty support, and refer clients to trusted resources, including Look Good Feel Better. LGFB reminds clients that hair loss during treatment can feel devastating, but they are not alone and they have options. Their Hair, Wigs & Scarves resources offer gentle guidance on hair loss, scalp care, wigs, scarves, wraps, and head coverings, whether a client chooses a wig, a wrap, or no covering at all.

141

Your Role as a Beauty Advisor Some clients may share that they are going through treatment. Others may simply ask about thinning hair, scalp sensitivity, a soft scarf, or brow products. Keep the conversation private, choice-based, and supportive. Beauty Advisors are not diagnosing or treating medical conditions; they are helping clients feel comfortable, supported, and seen, while knowing when to refer to medical care teams.

Scalp Comfort Comes First When hair begins to thin or fall out, the scalp may feel dry, sensitive, itchy, or uncomfortable. Beauty Advisor guidance can stay simple: cleanse gently, moisturize softly, reduce friction, and protect the scalp from sun and cold. If the scalp is sensitive, broken, weeping, irritated, or worsening quickly, encourage the client to contact their oncology care team.

Wigs, Scarves, and Choice Every client’s choice will be personal. Some may want a wig that resembles their natural hair. Others may prefer scarves, turbans, hats, or no covering. LGFB’s Hair, Wigs & Scarves section includes resources on selecting and buying a wig, synthetic versus human hair wigs, wig styling, wig care, scalp care FAQs, scarves, and head coverings.

A Moment of Care Hair loss can be deeply personal. A gentle conversation, a soft product recommendation, a scarf suggestion, or a referral to LGFB can help a client feel more comfortable and in control. In moments like these, beauty support becomes something more meaningful. It becomes care, confidence, and connection.

142

Key Takeaways

Hair loss can affect confidence and self-image

Beauty Advisors can support clients with empathy, privacy, and choice-based guidance.

Scalp comfort should come first

Gentle care, reduced friction, and sun protection can help clients feel more comfortable.

LGFB is a trusted referral resource

Their Hair, Wigs & Scarves resources and workshops offer practical support for clients navigating treatment-related hair loss. 143
