Daniel & Jade

Meet the team South Australia sheep and cattle farmers and parents of three Daniel and Jade applied for The Block for the first time four years ago, and are ready to grab the show by its horns now that they’ve finally made it.

Daniel spent over 16 years as a carpenter, and the reason he and Jade, a hairdresser, decided to try out for the show is because of their daughter Isla, who has a rare chromosome disorder that affects her speech and physical disability.

After also enduring great hardship on their farms because of drought – and last year one was destroyed by bushfires – the couple hope their experience on The Block will be able to turn their family’s lives around.

House 3

T he era - 1930’s

Art Deco sophistication brought a much needed diversity to the bathroom, with motifs like the chevrons and ziggurats, concentric circles, fans and shells, flowing lines. Pastel coloured tiles with a black bullnose and accent tiles were prominent.

Meet the team Married Queensland battlers Jimmy and Tam hope their experience will help create a better life for their young daughter.

“We are doing this for Frankie. We want to try and win to set our family up,” Jimmy said, with the couple hoping to use the money (if they win) to enter the property market back in Queensland and buy their family a home.

Jimmy, a former cross-fit coach and experienced plumber who’s had experience with full scale renovations, said he has a “fair idea about what I’m getting into”.

Tam, meanwhile, is the bar manager at her local bowls club, and hopes to bring her unique sense of style to The Block.

T he era - 1950’s

The ever present coloured tile remained in the 1950s, particularly mint green and light blue, but the most famous colour by far was pink. Mosaic tiles hit the mainstream and the most popular was 1 inch square or small rectangular patterns for the floor. This was the first time it was normal to tile floor to ceiling with square tiles.

Meet the team The Block’s first ever father and daughter renovation duo, 57-year-old Harry is an IT Manager while daughter Tash, 32, works in social media and production management.

The pair are hoping for a home turf advantage – both live nearby – and while Harry wouldn’t call himself an expert, has had some renovation experience.

As for Tash, “With production management there are so many skills that I think will be great on The Block. I am used to working with tight deadlines and ensuring the job gets done.”

House 1

T he era - 1920’s

The 1920’s started very similar to the 1910’s, but by the middle of the decade we saw coloured tiles and then coloured bathroomware that then refined into the Art Deco movement. The rise of Terrazzo started in the 1920’s with new technology in grinding. This brought even more creativity alongside the newly coloured tiles by the end of the decade.

Luke & Jasmin

Meet the team Perth couple Luke and Jasmin believe their secret weapon as Luke’s work as a carpenter will be a “secret weapon” when it comes to getting ahead in the competition.

The 35-year-old model started his own carpentry business nine years ago, and does everything from renovations to timber flooring. Jasmin, a part-time kindergarten teacher, runs a tight ship in the classroom and has a very clear idea about what sort of house she wants to build on The Block.

The pair, who met 17 years ago, are currently renovating their own home while raising their two kids, and plan to savour every moment of the competition.

House 4

T he era - 1910’s

At the turn of last century, bathrooms as we know them today were new in everyday homes. They were humble and functional. The white subway tiles originated from the easy to clean subway stations. This suited a time where focus was on the war, a utilitarian approach was pursued. Small square, hexagon or penny round tiles were favoured for the floor. Bathroomware was changing from cast iron to white porcelain.

Meet the team For experienced renovators and loved-up couple Sarah and George, being on The Block is a dream come true.

“We’ve said it a million times, but this kind of thing doesn’t happen to people like us. It’s mad, bro,” George, an electrician of 13 years, said.

Sarah, a high school teacher who hopes the experience will lead her in career direction more geared toward her eye for design and creative ideas, and her husband of three years have renovated two homes – one of which was a complete remodel, and have taken a year off to recover.

“Never in a million years did we think we’d do it to ourselves again – but hey, we’ve surprised ourselves,” Sarah said.

T he era - 1940’s

The rise of the square tile was the mark of a 1940s bathroom. It was also the time of WW2 and the fallout from the great depression, meaning a return to hygienic white with a pop of friendly colour. Black and white made a return.

It was highly fashionable to run a horizontal band around the room to give a tiny room the illusion of more space.
