PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Wendy A. Hoke, President of Beaumont College professors will tell you that they know from the first day of class which girls attended all-girls’ schools. They are not afraid to speak up because they have spent four years being the only leaders in all areas of the classroom, field and activities. This issue of the Beaumont News celebrates using our voices in our lives, leadership and service. I had the chance to meet our cover story subject, Ellen Pifer ’09, over the summer when she was in town visiting family. Not unlike many alums I meet, Ellen was quick to tell me that Beaumont laid the foundation for understanding challenging concepts. She says that ability to speak up and ask questions carried her through undergraduate studies in aerospace engineering at St. Louis University in classrooms dominated by young men and led by professors who could be less than enthusiastic about women in the program. “How do you handle yourself in stressful situations and not be crippled by fear?” she asks. You have to be persistent, resilient and resourceful and Beaumont taught her those qualities. Now, Ellen is looking to give back to other Beaumont women who want to pursue a career in engineering. Read more about her plans on page 8.

“Our message of an Ursuline education that educates the whole student—mind, body and spirit— is resonating. Beaumont’s enrollment is growing.”

Women’s impact on all fields. Empowerment. Finding your voice. All of these themes played out over and over at the National Coalition of Girls Schools Global Forum in Washington, D.C., that we attended in June. The message is clear: There’s never been a more vital time to be involved in the mission of educating young women. Our message of an Ursuline education that educates the whole student—mind, body and spirit—is resonating. Beaumont’s enrollment is growing. Following the launch of our new website in April, we saw a large uptick in transfer activity, both locally and internationally. In addition to our new freshman class, we also welcome 15 transfer students to Beaumont this year.

As we excitedly greeted our young women back to campus in August, I’m reminded of the comments of Rachel Simmons, author of the book, “Enough as She Is.” She says, “As we teach girls how to think, we build their skills to resist a culture that undermines their belief in their intelligence and belonging.” That’s called empowerment. At Beaumont School, not only are we educating young women with academic rigor, we also are empowering them to “do good” in the world. Whether it’s our students broadening their perspectives through foreign travel, meeting researchers and uncovering fossils on the Dino Dig, our faculty who are committed to the principles of an Ursuline education, or our alums, who have made their mark on the world in so many ways. St. Angela Merici knew and understood people, understood the benefits of educating women and believed in their power to transform society one person at a time. To be Ursuline is to be relational—one person at a time. So let us know what you’re doing, where you volunteer, if you’ve joined a board, if you’ve been promoted or recently retired, if you’ve written a book or performed a work of art. Let us know if you have daughters or granddaughters or nieces who would like to spend a day as a shadow at Beaumont. We love to hear from our 6,000 living alumnae. If you haven’t already, follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And connect with us on LinkedIn. And if you’re in the neighborhood, stop in for a visit. In St. Angela,

BEAUMONT IN THE WORLD By Gay Eyerman

In fourth grade at Gesu school, Ellen Pifer ’09 thought she had her whole life planned out. Describing herself as a “book nerd” who did extra math and science homework, she aspired to attend Beaumont and become an engineer with NASA. Ellen’s role model was her mother, Molly Stevenson, a 1979 Beaumont graduate and civil engineer. Her father, Jeff Pifer, had experience with flying small airplanes and encouraged her to take flying lessons at Lost Nation Airport in the summer after her junior year at Beaumont. “Before the wheels left the ground, I was sold,” recalls Ellen. She completed her first solo flight in her senior year. At Saint Louis University, Ellen studied aerospace engineering and was selected from 1,200 applicants for a Boeing internship. Since graduating from SLU in 2013, Ellen has worked at Boeing in the Seattle area. Though she no longer flies, she is on track for an impressive career at Boeing, already advancing to Lead Flight Controls Integration Engineer. Ellen now manages operations, strategy, and efficiency improvements for the multi-million-dollar Flight Controls and Hydraulics Systems test lab for Boeing’s new 777X.

Ellen Pifer’s engineering career is taking flight and she’s ready to help others 8

We asked Ellen about her life, career and Beaumont experience. HOW DID YOUR FAMILY INFLUENCE YOUR CAREER PATH? I idolized my grandfather—an internationally renowned structural engineering consultant for nuclear power plants. We were very like-minded and had great conversations. He fed me insights about being in a competitive industry, saying it helps that you’re a woman, but be able to “walk the talk.” My mom was also a huge influence. She went to the University of Notre Dame and worked as a civil engineer. She was always very engaged in our homework, especially math and science. (Ellen’s sisters Kate ‘10 and Macie ‘14 also attended Beaumont.) HOW DID YOUR BEAUMONT EDUCATION MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE? One of the most important things I got from Beaumont was how to speak the truth and be confident outside my comfort zone. There were several teachers who inspired this. Mr. Corr was the best calculus teacher I ever had. He did a wonderful job helping me to find my voice in that class—and calculus was definitely outside my comfort zone! And I hated English, but Mrs. Bihuniak made Honors English one of the most engaging, challenging classes I’ve ever taken. I am a huge perfectionist and teachers at Beaumont taught me I will fail sometimes and to be okay with that. They pushed us and gave us a safe and inviting place to experiment with navigating uncomfortable experiences—while still being true to yourself. They taught us to be okay with asking stupid questions. It’s really common for women to lose sight of the value their voice brings. When I graduated, one of my teachers said, “I hope you never stop asking questions.” I use this at Boeing when I perceive a group doesn’t grasp a concept. DO YOU SEE MORE WOMEN ENTERING ENGINEERING? Boeing is really pushing hard to engage more women in STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering & Math] at a younger age and to increase the number of women at Boeing.

There’s a drastic shortage of women at upper levels of experience, with only 8 percent women. Boeing is taking a hard look at this, as they’re missing out on women’s unique perspective and the diverse ideas we bring to the table that can drive innovation.

One of the most important things I got from Beaumont was how to speak the truth and be confident outside my comfort zone.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO CURRENT BEAUMONT STUDENTS? Be bold. Be courageous, whatever avenue you take to express that. Focus on what makes you happy. Identify your passion in life. It’s a lot to ask in high school, and I certainly didn’t know all that. But pursue those things. It’s not the content you learn in high school, it’s about the process of learning. It’s the camaraderie with fellow students to achieve those goals. HOW DID BEAUMONT SUPPORT OR FORM YOUR CATHOLIC FAITH? Beaumont's focus on Catholic faith education laid the foundation upon which some of my core values were formed. They created many opportunities to practice reflecting, journaling, or voicing intentions in class, retreats, or Mass. This helped illuminate what was important to me and a source for making important life decisions. ANYTHING YOU WISH YOU’D KNOWN IN HIGH SCHOOL? To be more compassionate with myself. I held myself to very high, unrealistic expectations. I also put those onto others. Because of that, I shut people out. If I hadn’t done that, I would’ve had different relationships. ANY FAVORITE MOVIES? “Hidden Figures” [a 2016 film about black,

female mathematicians at NASA during the 1960s Space Race]. I’ve seen it three times! It’s probably the best movie I’ve ever seen that portrays women in strong leadership roles. It definitely struck a chord with me. YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? I want to become a leader who expands a culture at Boeing—one that promotes our reputation as a center of technical excellence, one that invests in people’s futures, and grows their technical capabilities. ANY THOUGHTS ON WOMEN BALANCING A FAMILY AND CAREER? Pick the right partner. Pick a partner who will support your career goals and own a fair share of all other responsibilities whether domestic, financial, or child care. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE NEW STEM WING AND FOCUS AT BEAUMONT? I love it! I was thrilled to hear it and can’t wait to see it. I set up a fund for students at Beaumont (see below) who want to pursue engineering. It will also fund continued learning for teachers, to invest in materials or anything the school needs to engage students in what’s happening in STEM. I want to inspire young women to start thinking about a career. The earlier, the better.

In 2015, Ellen Pifer made the initial donation to start the Stevenson Family Engineering Fund (named for her mother’s family). This fund will be used to promote women in engineering through internships, travel to national meetings, or advanced teacher training. Ellen’s goal is to eventually create a fully endowed scholarship. Her employer, Boeing, annually matches her contribution. For more information about contributing to our scholarship endowments, call (216) 325-7328. Gay Eyerman is a freelance writer and parent of Sophie Eyerman, Class of 2021

BEAUMONT IN THE WORLD

MORE THAN A SCIENCE FIELD TRIP

Beaumont students broaden their understanding working alongside professional paleontologists and researchers By Barbara Brown Finding a dinosaur bone on an archeological dig isn’t something that many high school students are doing on their summer breaks, but at least three rising Beaumont juniors set out to do just that this summer as they joined our Science Department Chair, Simon Masters on an archeological dig in Ekalaka, MT. Rachel Ankenbrandt ’20, Madeline Brown ’20, and Savannah Patterson ’20, along with chaperone Jenna Langa, ’11, worked the active research site on the Dino Dig, a Summer Dig Program conducted in conjunction with the Burpee Museum of Natural History out of Rockford, IL. 10

Beaumont is unique on the dig as its the only high school group, the only all-girls school of any kind, and one of few from a large metropolitan area. The results from past years have been wide- ranging for the students. Every Beaumont student has found some fossils, and they’ve found bones from more than just dinosaurs: fish, bird, lizard, crocodile, turtle, tree, leaf, plants. All findings are contributed to the federally accredited collections of Burpee via the museum’s permits to conduct research on lands that are administered by the Department of Interior: Bureau of Land Management.

MORE THAN FINDING BONES The Dino Dig is in its fourth year and is a special opportunity for Beaumont students for many reasons beyond discovering bones. A dig is more than science. It’s art, history, society, government, math, engineering, logistics, interpersonal interactions, some world language. Interactions occur not only in the field but also with the locals creating a better understanding of science, society, and how the two are interrelated. Researchers from all over the world participate in the Carter County Museum’s Dino Shindig including UC-Berkley Museum of Paleontology, Royal Ontario Museum, Smithsonian, Field Museum, Museum of the Rockies, and Oklahoma State University. “The interactions with scientists have had a huge impact on our students. Being able to see female role models presenting technical talks has been life-changing. Students see the

excitement of discovering bones and the real life paleontologists that study them as a career,” shared Mr. Masters. “Being the only all-girls school there also provides the student with another bonding opportunity. Seeing themselves through the eyes of non-Beaumont students can be enlightening and empowering. Knowing you are part of the only all-girls school can help reinforce the excellent choice they made in going to Beaumont,” said Mr. Masters. HOW THE DINO DIG CAME TO BEAUMONT During his junior year of high school, Mr. Masters participated in a dig in Bozeman, MT and it set the direction for his college career. He brought that passion of field work to Beaumont in the form of the Dino Dig. He’s grateful for the school’s support of this valuable program.

University where she earned her BS and PhD degrees in Biology. Upon completion of her studies at BGSU, Kim and her husband, Eric, moved to Florida where she worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher, Research Assistant Professor, and finally Assistant Director of Development for the University of Florida’s Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience, a satellite lab in St. Augustine. Kim returned to Cleveland in 2012 where she worked for two years at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine as the Director of Development—Surgery before being recruited to the Cleveland Zoological Society in 2014. As Director of Development at the Cleveland Zoo Society, Kim spearheaded the fundraising effort to raise funds to build multiple capital projects as well as provide support for education, conservation, and animal care programs.

Her love of Beaumont is woven throughout her life. An equal constant is her dedication to the memory of Sister Dorothy Kazel, OSU. Serving as Principal in December 1980, Sister Martha recalls dismissing school when the news arrived that Sister Dorothy and her three fellow missionaries were brutally murdered in El Salvador. In the almost 40 years since, she has kept Sister Dorothy alive at Beaumont, telling her story to students and faculty alike. Sister Dorothy was a Beaumont guidance counselor before leaving for El Salvador, “a friend to the friendless” as Sister Martha describes, with limitless compassion for the students. When (not if) Sister Dorothy Kazel is canonized for sainthood, know that it was Sister Martha who foretold of these events. It seems only fitting then, that those who want to honor Sister Martha’s long and cherished Beaumont legacy, may do so through a gift to the Sister Dorothy Kazel Scholarship Fund.

SAYS ‘FAREWELL, FOR NOW’ By Eileen McCann Student, alumna, Ursuline Sister, teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, math tutor. Those words describe the many roles of Sister Martha Mooney, OSU ’58 and her 64-year journey at Beaumont School. She was practically born at Beaumont School. But she announced at the end of the 2017-18 school year that she would pursue a new ministry. While she will no longer be a daily presence, we trust she will never be away from Beaumont for very long. Sister Martha relished her most recent stint at Beaumont as a Math Tutor, Moderator of the Future Teachers’ Association and Moderator of the Faculty/Student Mission Integration Team. “I have the best job,” she would beam. Alums from the 1970s and ’80s when she was Assistant Principal and Principal, may remember her differently. Sister jokes with her

trademarked self-deprecation, “even my family used to ask me if I would ever smile again.” Her fondness for Beaumont students was just as great, but clearly the role demanded a serious front. Sister credits many other Ursulines for paving her way and offering her their expertise including Sister Kenan, Sister Claudia Klyn, Sister Margaret Ann Kelley and Sister John Mary. She quickly deflects attention, often with a funny story about herself. Sister Martha often made new friends among the current students, only to realize she had taught their grandmothers! A frequent topic, of course, is the sizable family tree through which she is connected to an endless sea of Mooney and Monroe relatives, many of whom also attended Beaumont over the decades. We often joke that all of Beaumont is six degrees from Sister Martha.

In addition to awarding this student scholarship, Beaumont continues to celebrate Mass each December, rededicating ourselves anew to spread Dorothy’s message of justice for all people. Sister Martha has been spreading the message of both St. Angela and Sister Dorothy, encouraging us to turn to them again and again for friendship and support. She is our modern day “Face of Angela,” whom we “recognized as our faithful friend” (Ninth Counsel). She will be missed. We wish her well in her next endeavor, hopeful that she will be back to visit often. To make a gift to the Sister Dorothy Kazel, OSU, Scholarship Fund in honor of Sister Martha Mooney, please visit www.beaumontschool.org/giving or call Eileen McCann at (216) 325-7328.

Eileen Monroe McCann is Director of Annual Giving at Beaumont. And yes, she is related to Sister Martha. She is the parent of three Beaumont alums: Mary Kate ’09, Maggie ’10 and Molly ’16.

COACH DERRICK RUSSELL Empowering women athletes on and off the court You can’t miss basketball coach Derrick Russell. At 6'8" he literally stands out in the halls and the gym at Beaumont, but it is his coaching style and influence that are most hard to miss. Prior to joining Beaumont three years ago, Head Coach Russell spent a lifetime playing basketball and was on the coaching staff for the men’s team at Case Western Reserve University. ON THE COURT With over 40 players on the team this year, Coach Russell has an opportunity to impact many young women at Beaumont. But he approaches them individually. “Each athlete is different and each one has a unique learning style,” says Coach Russell. He is a firm believer that Beaumont athletes should be comfortable with who they are, and find their voice not just on the court but in their life. “Many students have chosen Beaumont because they know that this is a place where they will be heard. I chose Beaumont for my own daughter (Rae). While she doesn't play basketball, she’s in the theater and a senior now. The philosophy is the same as in athletics—girls are heard here,” Coach Russell explains. OFF THE COURT Coach Russell considers himself more than just a basketball coach to his athletes. He supports them in other sports, in theater, in music, in robotics. Whatever they were doing, he encourages them to explore and broaden their interest. It is through this exploration they will discover their interests and talents and a path forward to know what they might choose as a college major or career. 14

“As much as I would tell my athletes this, they seem to just not quite hear what I was saying. Then I had the idea to have women say it to them. Why not bring in professional women who have made it through what feels like such an uncertain time in these young women’s lives?” Coach Russell asked himself. “If they heard it from women who were successful, then they might hear the message I was trying to share.”

four women at each event, and we had three different events last year with our students moderating the questions and answers sessions.”

It was from this idea that Coach Russell launched the Professional Women Speakers Series. He recruited professional women speakers who enthusiastically agreed to participate, and when he presented the idea to the student-athletes, they loved it so much they took over.

“I want them to know it’s ok to not be perfect or not know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life at 15, 16, 17, or 18. I want them to know they are fine being who they are and that they will get there. They are learning all that they need to right now at Beaumont, and they will have a bright future.”

“All I really had to do was get out of the way,” Coach Russell shares. “My athletes loved the idea and showed their leadership. They carved time out of their practice so they could host these events. They jumped right in organizing each one and promoting to the school so even non-athletes came. We had

A BEAUMONT STUDENT FINDS FULFILLMENT IN

EL SALVADOR By Maggie Boswell ’20 This July, I spent a week working with a nonprofit and connecting with the people in Chiltiupan, El Salvador, a small mountaintop village with a population of about 25,000 people and a very high unemployment rate. I work for Santa Rosa Stitches, which is a fair-trade organization that employs about 20 women living in Chiltiupan. The women crochet, knit, sew, and make jewelry that we bring back to Ohio and sell. For most of these women this group is their only source of income. I have been working for Santa Rosa Stitches for about a year, but my mother got involved with them about five years ago and my father helps students in El Salvador receive college scholarships to further their education.

My parents’ love for the small municipality and its inhabitants is what first caught my attention and I am so lucky to be able to visit this beautiful country. I am always reminded of how similar we really are when I visit. My parents have formed close relationships with many families in Chiltiupan, that I have also come to love and embrace through my visits. I hope that people learn that a family in El Salvador or Guatemala or Mexico is just as strong and loving as families in the United States, and nothing constitutes separating those families.

1957 Class Representative: Barbara Schuele Schubert bschubert100@gmail.com An overflowing table of 1957 graduates of Beaumont School gathered at the Ursuline Motherhouse to celebrate the 60th anniversary of classmate, Sister Praxedes’ (Janet Wakefield) of entrance into the Ursulines. Following a beautiful Mass we

gathered for a reception, lots of talk and a chance to congratulate Janet. It was especially good to see Lynn McAuley Mann, who has been unable to come to reunions in recent years. Her husband, Larry, passed away in 2005 and she recovered from a bout with cancer the following year. The next year she joined the choir at St. Helen’s Church and four years later married a widower, who was also a choir member. She and Steve Kitko recently celebrated their 6th wedding anniversary. Lynn did not enjoy retirement, so she is currently a busy nurse and grandmother to two local and four out of town grandchildren. Roberta (Mastny) Wingerter took time off from her move to Wilmington, N.C. to write that though the move was difficult, being near five grandchildren was the reason for doing so. She commented that she should have done it sooner! She also mentioned doing some volunteer Church work. Monica Bolek Rini is active in the Highland Heights Garden Club and enjoys being a Flower Show judge. Joanne Mazza Ryan and husband, Jack, are looking forward to a visit with their daughter, Coleen, who resides in Atlanta. Marianne Rocco Walton enjoyed having all of her grown children here to celebrate the Baptism of her youngest of thirteen grandchildren, baby Rose Walton. Do you remember History teacher and debate coach, Carol Cerney? She recently lost her husband, Noah Minkin, and has moved to a retirement facility in Maryland. If anyone would like to send her a note, please call for her present address. When I last saw her, about three years ago, she was healthy and happy, and still bragging that it was she who introduced my husband, John, to me. By the time you read

this column we hope to have had our first of many lunch meetings. Keep those notes/ phone calls/e-mails coming. We love to hear the latest news from classmates near and far.

1958 Class Representatives: Mary Jo Abraham Antoon mjantoon@roadrunner.com Sr. Martha Mooney mmooney@ursulinesisters.org We had a wonderful two days visiting with our classmates at our 60th Reunion at Beaumont and at Nighttown. Although our numbers weren’t large, our stories and experiences were. Lynn Smith Magnotto flew in from Phoenix, Arizona to attend and regale us with her adventures in the west and stories about her 5 children and 20 grandchildren. Sally McMonagle Duffy and her husband have two childen and three grandchildren and enjoy spending summers in Put-in-Bay and winters in Sanibel Is, Fla. So does Patty Minnello Kirschner and her husband, Frank, who have 4 children and 20 grandchildren and spend their summers here and winters in Florida, also. Several years ago, Helen Bordonaro Parisi and her husband, Steve, moved from University Hts. to Pepper Pike where they’re enjoying their retirement, and they also spend time every spring in Fla. Kay Rooney Kusnirik is busy these days organizing the widows and widowers group she started nine years ago out of St. Francis Church in Gates Mills. With thirty-five active members, Kay arranges road trips, dinners, movies, etc., for her group and loves it. Carol Murphy joined the Senior group in Solon and recently enjoyed a trip to the Amish country. She travels on bus trips and joins other activities and has a great time. Peggy Opaskar volunteers as an usher at the Orchestra’s Severance presentations and, also, enjoys the performances. In her spare time, she tutors students in the Shaker Hts. Schools. Sr. Martha Mooney is enjoying her retirement although she seems pretty busy with her schedule at Beaumont and beyond. The students love her. Joan Fritz Vidmar and her husband, Bill, recently

celebrated their 50th Anniversary by taking a cruise to the Bahamas with their entire family, including 4 children and 6 grandchildren and enjoyed every minute of it. Marcia Cogan recently attended a reunion for St. Ann School members and enjoyed talking to a number of classmates. Although Mary Abraham Antoon works part time, she always enjoys having her family over, including her 3 sons and 5 grandchildren, and especially recently on Father’s Day. If you have some news to share, please contact me at the above email. Hope you have a great summer.

1960 Class Representatives: Mary Carol Kundtz Lewis mcarollewis@roadrunner.com Diane MacDermott Mehling dianemehling@gmail.com Mary Carol Kuntz Lewis is keeping busy with a part-time job teaching anti-bullying skills to grade school children, combating sex trafficking through SOAP (Save our Adolescents from Prostitution) and chairing an inner-city mentoring program for 7th grade girls. She also enjoys hiking, bicycling and gardening now that summer has finally arrived. She and her husband John travel when they can and spend time with their two daughters and their families in Austin Texas. Carole Castellano Clutter is supposedly retired from teaching, however has taken a job as a bus aid. She works with special situations—children with disabilities or with behavioral situations that cannot be solved in the usual school setting. She enjoys it tremendously and stays in the plan. Sue Salstrom Ribisl has downsized after 45 years in the same house, from a 10 room house on an acre of land to a 4 room condo. She will be moving by the first week of June. She is wondering how many “Beaumonsters” have done the same thing? Sue remembers her days at Beaumont in the Class of 1960 with such fondness for all the fun and friends as well as a wonderful education. A big HELLO to all from Winston-Salem North Carolina. Diane MacDermott Mehling is still in the same house of 46 years, in

Centerville, Ohio (outside of Dayton) where she has raised all 5 of my children. While she hasn’t decided about downsizing yet, she is sure she will eventually. Diane still works full time at Wright State University with the Clinical Trial Research Alliance; her job is to provide quality oversight to all the drug trials they are doing, and provide education for the investigators and coordinators. She loves her work and will stay as long as they will have her! She enjoys gardening, bridge, book club, playing the piano, meditating (a la Deepak Chopra) and is a huge sports fan. All of Diane’s kids graduated from Ohio State University, so she loves OSU football, but every other sport as well. Still a big Indians and Cavaliers fan! Her children live in New York City, Chicago, Houston and Columbus, Ohio, so travel constantly to visit. Her 5 grandchildren are studying at Syracuse, Indiana University and Ohio State, with 2 still in high school. They all text a lot so that makes it easy to keep up. *If you read this little report in the Beaumont Newsletter and did not get an emailed invitation to provide a story about yourself, please email me at dianemehling@gmail.com, so I will have your current contact information. Many of my emails bounced back because of incorrect email addresses. I will be updating the contact list constantly. I would love to hear from many more of you for the next round.

1961 Class Representative: Joanne Eafanti Gilliam (440) 461-2193 For most of us, this is our 75th year of life – hard to believe. I count as one of God’s blessings, being able to meet with and talk to Beaumont friends and classmates. In that spirit, Harriet Deucher Kropf, hosted a lunch for Jeanne Thiel Clark this past May. Jeanne returned from Florida to visit family in Cleveland. Margaret Logan James, Marge Koenig Urban and some of Jeanne’s Ursuline College classmates, and myself, were recipients of Harriet’s hospitality. Stories of our high school misadventures and teachers brought us smiles and laughter. Please contact me

CELEBRATING BEAUMONT ALUMNAE with events or past memories that you treasure and would like to share with the class. Soli Deo Gloria.

1962 Class Representative: Christina Collura Embrescia mceone@hotmail.com We have good news and bad news from Kathy Machol Zimmerman. The good news is that she and Andrea Vadas Ashburn had lunch in May in Texas, where they both live. They went back to Andrea’s home, because, they weren’t finished gabbing. Later on (not that day), Kathy fell and broke her wrist. After having surgery with pins inserted and such, Kathy is recuperating; and, writes that she just loved her visit with Andrea. Well Andrea certainly gets around; Dorothy Janusko Valerian met up with Andrea in Cleveland, Ohio for a very long lunch, also. It seems that Andrea was visiting some college roommates on the west side. I only wish that I had been there with them, but, I was spending the winter in Florida, at our seasonal home. Sick bay no longer: Bonnie Sheldon Martino, had cataract surgery in January, a knee replacement in March, and, she is raring to go. In July, she and David will be taking a Viking Rhine River Cruise and then a separate trip to Ireland. Nothing keeps this girl down. Judit Szabo Jackovics is loving life in the bay area of California, where she and her husband own 7 fitness centers, called “Fitness SF”. They are also enjoying their 9 granddaughters and 1 grandson. Lucky them. Judy writes that her mother is “still with us at 97 years old, and, regularly paints, plays the piano and swims”. This family is truly blessed. Mary Therese Mato Sidman says that all is well in Columbus, Ohio. She and her husband have sold their “empty nester” home and purchased a condo in Upper Arlington, that is within walking distance to everything. They are going this summer, with their daughter and her family, to “cowboy country” and wishes all of our classmates a fond hello. Sister Roberta Goebel, “Bobbie” to us, has finally retired, sort of, from being a Principal. No grass grows under her feet. She is now

22

working at her parish doing pastoral work. She only moved from one building to another... can’t keep Bobbie inactive. Lois Ptacek Hudson wrote us that she is very saddened by her cousin and life long friend, Christine May Andres, passing away. Christine also graduated from Beaumont, the year before us. You have our condolences, Lois. Carol Senda Damaso and her husband, Don, have welcomed their only grandchild, a girl named Gia Celine. They also came to Cleveland, where they stayed with Don’s sister, Laurie Damaso Seltzer, at her seasonal home in Cleveland. They visited with John Mannen (husband of the late Terry Defino Mannen) and Chris and Jim Embrescia. They also just celebrated 50 years of marriage. Congrats, you two lovebirds. Kathleen Scully Eagle, wrote that she had no news; but, wanted to say hello to everyone.

1963 Class Representative: Kati Callahan Crawford kati7845@aol.com Karen Neff Thurber is coming to Cleveland for a family reunion in July, and visited last year to could say goodbye to Kathy Reese. They had 3 wonderful days remembering all our favorite times from 5th grade on. She doesn’t leave her beautiful Cape Cod at this time of year very much! They love it there and retired here 10 years ago, and are now are busier than when they worked! I think. She wishes all her best to the class of 1963-Happy 55th! Gerry Jarzembowski Hadley Richard writes that after being widowed for 6 years, she found a mate on Catholic Match and married in October. After a 6 week trip out west, they have been busy combining households. They both love bridge and are very involved in our club here. She is living in Sun City Center, Florida, and loving the retirement life. Although, to look at her schedule you wouldn’t think she was retired! Working on a big fund raiser for Alzheimers and couldn’t get away for the reunion. Shirley Miller Shilling says 2017 was a whirlwind year with having to travel for the gamut of celebrations for her 10

BEAUMONT NEWS I A MAGAZINE FOR ALUMNAE AND FRIENDS OF BEAUMONT SCHOOL I FALL 2018

grandchildren’s birthdays, graduations, and 1st Communions, in addition to their sports, and her mom’s 99th birthday. The wind was taken out of the sail when her mom died at the beginning of Dec.’17. She would have been 100 on May 8th. Memorial weekend she was buried and we celebrated her life by having a family reunion. Unfortunately, Shirley was unable to attend our class reunion as she returned to work in Missouri, but is looking forward to seeing everyone the next one as she will be retired then. Kathy Gyarmathy Eckhart, as a Washington D.C. Suburbs resident, made sure to go to the Right-to-Life March this past January. Normally it is a small. This year it was huge. Spread across the National Mall and beyond. So inspiring— all the young high schoolers and others from all over the country. Kathy will be a grandma for the first time soon. Her precious daughter and her wonderful husband are due this September. They are very excited, but at the same time this brings a lifetime of various convictions and other issues into focus.

1967 Class Representative: Mary Ellen Malone Shannon nrlshannon@cox.net Sue McGrath said she is putting her law degree to good use babysitting her 17 month old granddaughter four days a week. Micki Krupitzer Mackin is retired but has a business on Etsy called Micki Word Art. She still makes the Beaumont graduation banner every year. Kathy Hespen Forster splits her time between Denver and Detroit visiting her grandchildren and children. Bridget Mclaughlan Steck had a knee replacement on April 16. Sally Sauto Gamby and Mary Ellen Malone Shannon were spotted at the Golden Stantians luncheon at Nighttown. It is a luncheon held for St. Ann students that have been out 50 years. Yikes! Carol Kuhner works for Parker Hannifion Corporation and has been there twenty years. Mary Kay Novak Norian is looking forward to the marriage of the first of her five daughters. Melinda McHugh Offer

is married with three children and lives in Michigan. As some of you already have heard, Virginia Hozheimer died after a long illness with Parkinson’ Disease. Well classmates, I want to thank you for sharing and hope that you have a great summer!

1970 Class Representative: Rosemary Amato Rosemary@Amato.nl Are you interested in starting to plan for our 50th reunion in 2020? Mary Langer asked that question a few years ago for our 45, so I thought it would be good to ask it now for our 50th. We are still looking for classmates, and it is with sorrow that I announce we found JoAnne Bury. Her sister Janice let us know that JoAnne died 21 years ago. Janice still misses her sister. Gail O’Donnell Sapio writes that she is doing well with 5 daughters and 14 grandchildren. She saw Sandy Palivec at her college reunion. She also saw Kathy McCabe after 37 years; Kathy lives in Toledo and is a recent widow.

1972 Class Representatives: Adrianne Senft Kohn adriannekohn@gmail.com Mary Beth Walton Guzzo mbguzzo@gmail.com On May 17th, thirteen of our classmates gathered in the Beaumont chapel for a Memorial Mass to honor our five deceased class members: Fran Sharotta Berglund, Deborah Mahne Fekeshazy, Mary Downey Gomez, Laure Niedel MacKinnon and Mea Ferrara Pierman. Pat Connelly Dubiel and Kathy Simoson O’Brien read the Readings, and vocals were done by Kim Binder Carroll. Father Vincent spoke about friendship and how this connection to others continues forever. A lovely memorial table in front of the altar was created by Sue Robinson Andrassy which brought tears to all who attended. Kathy had noticed a beautiful lilac bush outside the window of the chapel, and at one point during the Mass five

birds gracefully flew into the bush chirping and fluttering around. When Mass was ending, all five birds flew away together in harmony. It was a special moment! The celebration continued with lunch at Geraci’s restaurant. Special thanks to Karen Bartko Reming for organizing this extraordinary event. A few classmates have recently earned the rank of Retirement. Congratulations to Linda Zeleznik Knast and Liz Somody Davis on this achievement and best wishes for the next chapter. Linda and her husband recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary by traveling to Cape May, New Jersey to enjoy the sand and surf. Mary Beth Walton Guzzo visited Missoula, Montana for her nephew’s wedding and Peggy Wood VanDyke and her husband have recently been sight-seeing in Italy. While her husband was on a golf vacation, Brenda Woodworth O’Toole had a mishap at her home which resulted in a sprained ankle. Speedy recovery Brenda—you’ll be up and running in no time! In the Fall of 2015, Pat Connelly Dubiel requested for us to pray for her six year-old granddaughter Maisie who had been diagnosed with a blood disease and needed a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Through God’s grace, Maisie is now eight, back in school after missing two years, and just made her First Holy Communion. Pat and her family are so grateful for all of our prayers. Maryellen Amato Stratmann, Karen Bird, Karen Bartko, Kathy Caputo, Julie Leczo and Sue Robinson, all Beaumont Alumni from the class of 1972 attended their 8th grade class 50th reunion at Our Lady of Peace, class of 1968. It was a great celebration with over 30 in attendance. On a personal note, the grand-baby stork delivered our first grandson this past February and is scheduled to bring our first granddaughter at the end of July. We love that stork and feel blessed with all the new deliveries! Please continue to keep all of our classmates and their families in your prayers. Keep well and live every day to the fullest!

1973 Class Representatives: Annie Kachurek kachurek@msn.com

Pamela Smith pamelapeeblessmith@gmail.com We had a lovely time reconnecting on a warm summer evening and enjoyed seeing all the updates on campus. Mary Bourne Hughes, Martha Blatt Doran and I had a few chuckles reminiscing about our shared homeroom experience freshman year with Sister Valeria. Judy Jackson Gore is now retired from teaching at Columbus Schools but is just as busy volunteering. It was wonderful to see Lynn Baucco who has been working for Liggett Stashower Advertising for over 45 years, just moved to Mentor, Ohio and enjoys golfing. Genie Dzurik German is retired from law practice and looking forward to her daughter’s wedding this fall. Ann Mannen is a retired judge who served on the Court of Common Pleas. I was on a jury in her courtroom several years back. Ann Adams Davis travelled from New York and Barb Schade Ferraro from Boston to join us. Barb and her husband John spend winters at their home in Naples, Florida. Pamela Peebles Smith writes: “I am actually on my third career adventure. I taught deaf children in public and private schools including Cincinnati public schools, Dayton public schools, and St. Rita School for the Deaf. After about 20 years, I changed careers and began to teach Interpreter education in Charlotte North Carolina at a local community college. My final career adventure is being a senior language specialist for interpreters that provide video remote interpreting services to corporate America, hospitals and courts. Living in Charlotte, NC with my husband, Loyal, and a Welsh Terrier. Joanne Alford Laessig works for the Cleveland Catholic Diocese. Vikki Peck Koehn joined us on day two of the reunion and continues to have open houses at her home/ studio twice yearly. As you might recall she met her husband Norbert while doing “Project Real” in Germany. He is a sculptor. They married and made their home here in the US. If you have not been to the Koehn Studio, it is located in South Euclid near the old Regina High School. Sandra Eulinberg Fletcher shared this via email post event: “I really enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate my 45th Reunion with my classmates. Having taught

CELEBRATING BEAUMONT ALUMNAE Chemistry at Beaumont from 2002 to 2011, I was also able to engage with the Class of 2003 and 2008. I provided a “private tour” of the two additions to the school that have occurred since our graduation in 1973. We shared memories of having to run outside to get to the Arts building in the middle of winter. It always amazes me that people say the school “smells the same”. We are all looking forward to our 50th so we can have champagne in the VIP lounge!” Maureen Lamb shared this via email post event: “I served on the Beaumont Board of Trustees for 6 years. I am currently Co-Chair of the 2018 Beaumont golf outing and a member of the Hall of Fame Committee and the 2019 Gala committee. I have been on many other committees, but I think just the current ones are important. I am a CPA with the law firm of Hahn, Loeser and Parks, LLP in the Estates and Trusts Practice Group.” I personally want to thank Maureen for her exemplary service to our Alma Mater. Ellen Moir Mastrangelo was busy on Friday night but joined us at Nighttown for the second evening and shared this: “I am living in Willoughby with my family. Having married in my 40’s, I am busy raising two teenagers (yes, you read that correctly)! I work as a nurse educator at University Hospitals and have been with UH for most of the last 40 years.” Terri Reilly Roberto shared: “So glad I made it to this reunion! Would have loved to see more alums, and I appreciate those who travelled a distance! I am still working as an RN at University Hospitals as a research nurse. I have direct patient care which I love and the hours are great—no more holidays! My Dad passed suddenly in May. He was 89 years and still sharp. My Mom passed last year and they were both wonderful examples of living the faith. My daughters (all three) are in Cleveland. One is married—Kristen is a stay at home mom with three kids plus one due in October! Of course, I love those little ones! My oldest, Annie, works in water management and environmental issues, Meagan has been a nanny and prn teacher’s aide for special needs kids. They are all college grads, which makes me proud. My husband, Ron, retired from mental health care and loves being

outside with our yard and plants. We wonder how the years sped by! In July, I am heading to Aspen to spend time with my sister who has a place there. We will probably reminisce and grieve over our parents. I still feel grateful for Beaumont and what it did for me personally.” We could have had a mini nurses convention with Dottie Mekker Bauer, Mary Gall Massey, Ellen, Terri, and myself. I know there are many more registered nurses in our class and hope you and many more will endeavor to join us on our 50th. Both Ann Elliott Whitney and Lisa Logan sent regrets that they could not attend due to the upcoming births of their grandchildren. Lisa was traveling to Italy for the event. Oh, I forgot to give you my update. I am still working at Cleveland Clinic—38 years now. I have seven grandchildren born in less than five years. I work to support the grandma habit of indulging them. Pam Peebles Smith and I are now your class reps. My head was spinning trying to take mental notes for this publication as I chatted with classmates, but my memory is not as sharp as it was in 1973. As you might have noticed there have been no entries for our class in recent years so I am making up for lost time. If you would be so kind to send me or Pam your news on occasion that would be helpful, otherwise, I’ll have to make something up. (I’m kidding—at least my humor has not left me)!
