“Our next big community celebration will be in 2025 as we celebrate – along with the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland –our 175th anniversary! Look for much more to come – including ways to get involved in the planning later this year.”
Message from the President
Dear Alumnae and Friends,
Summer has descended on this beautiful place we call Beaumont and with a little slower rhythm, I’m reflecting on what has been both an exciting and challenging couple of years. The 2022-23 school year ended on a celebratory note as we graduated 74 seniors, a group of young women who spent almost their entire Beaumont career in pandemic conditions. These young women are so perceptive about what was lost and what was gained, what we did well, and where we can improve.
Principal Ann Hoelzel and I are grateful for their insights and feedback that will make Beaumont better. Congratulations, Class of 2023!
The celebrations continued throughout the second half of the year – from Blue Streak championships to the dedication of our Sister Margaret Ann Kelley Dining Hall, and the triumphant return of our gala after four years! The party on Beaumont’s campus was an incredible mix of alums, donors, board members, past parents, current parents, future parents, faculty and staff. Thank you for joining us in celebration and for helping us to launch the public phase of The Heart of Beaumont Campaign
Thanks to your generous support, we raised nearly $200,000 toward our capital campaign. Thank you! Check out the many photos from these events throughout this issue.
Our next big community celebration will be in 2025 as we celebrate – along with the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland – our 175th anniversary! Look for much more to come – including ways to get involved in the planning later this year.
We also took time to celebrate alumna Mary Jo Paulett Toumert ’75 as this year’s recipient of the Beaumont Award. This award is given to those who, “… have dramatically contributed their time, effort and/or financial support and have thereby bestowed extraordinary gifts upon the Beaumont School Community in furthering the school’s mission of educating young women for life, leadership and service.” Mary Jo is that rare awardee who deserves recognition for all three categories: leadership, service and philanthropy. Read more about Mary Jo and her impact on page 8.
We said a tearful farewell to our legendary and longtime track and cross-country coach, Jim Emery He passed away in March and we hosted a celebration of his life in May. We received countless messages from alums near and far, fellow coaches, and a community so grateful to have known and loved him. We have a tribute to Coach Emery on page 19.
The rest of this summer issue of Beaumont News is filled with the activities of our students and our alums – women who are truly changing the world! Check it out and keep us posted on what you’re doing and how you would like to get involved.
You’ll be hearing more from me as we take our capital campaign efforts out to the broader world. Beaumont is strong because of the support of our many donors and alums. As we reach out, please give prayerfully and sacrificially to this school that has served as a strong academic, faith and social foundation for so many. As always, please reach out to me and let me know how we’re doing or how you’d like to help. You can email me at whoke@beaumontschool.org or call 216.325.7324.

Mary Jo Paulett Toumert ’75: 2023 Beaumont Award Recipient
Furthering the mission of educating young women for life, leadership and service
earned her a reputation as a trusted advisor and advocate.
Compassionate Leadership as a Guiding Force
When it comes to exceptional education and empowering young women, Beaumont School stands out as a beacon of excellence. You need look no further for proof of this transformative power than in our alumnae, including this year’s Beaumont Award recipient, Mary Jo Paulett Toumert ’75 Mary Jo is an experienced employment and business lawyer and a longtime supporter of Beaumont School.
An Inspiring Career of Service
Mary Jo's path to success is nothing short of inspiring. After graduating from Beaumont School, she attended Miami University and obtained her J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Throughout her professional life, Mary Jo has represented private companies, not-for-profits, and government entities on various legal matters, including employment discrimination, wage and hour issues, and business disputes.
Her illustrious career highlights include serving as the Vice President of Legal Affairs for Great Lakes Cheese, where she provided invaluable guidance on legal matters and played an integral role in the company’s success. Her expertise and dedication
Mary Jo’s accomplishments extend beyond her legal career, and it’s her remarkable journey of contributing time and bestowing her talents to Beaumont that lead to her being named this year’s Beaumont Award recipient.
Going back to the late 90’s, Mary Jo offered Beaumont insights and expertise on HR matters. She joined the Board of Directors in 2009, serving as Chair of the Development Committee, becoming the Board Chair in 2012. Mary Jo steered the Board and Beaumont through important years of strategic planning and campus development, culminating with the $9.5 Million Advancing Excellence Campaign and construction of the STEM wing. Even after her conclusion on the Board, Mary Jo continued to serve by chairing the search committee for Beaumont’s first lay President, our current President Wendy Hoke. Her enthusiasm for Beaumont continues to this day with her support of our latest Heart of Beaumont Campaign
“Mary Jo is a rare awardee who deserves recognition for all three Beaumont Award categories: leadership, service and philanthropy,” said President Hoke. “She remains an engaged stakeholder as I and the Board look to the future, and with her husband Mo Toumert, has been a longstanding and generous philanthropic partner.”
One of the hallmarks of Beaumont School is the strong sense of community it fosters. Mary Jo vividly remembers her time as a student, cherishing the laughter that echoes through the school’s walls. It was a place where she thrived academically, played sports, and participated in school plays. Beaumont provided an environment where she could grow, learn, and discover her unique abilities. The camaraderie among the students and the dedicated faculty created a support network that extended far beyond graduation.
The influence of the dedicated sisters and teachers at Beaumont School left an indelible mark on Mary Jo’s life. Sister Maureen Grady, OSU, recognized her leadership potential and reminded her of the impact she could have on others. This lesson in leadership and the importance of treating others with kindness and humanity have guided Mary Jo throughout her personal and professional endeavors.
“Beaumont taught me the value of friendship,” said Mary Jo. “I have so many great memories with my friends from here and as it has carried on throughout our lives. Almost all include laughter and lively conversation. We learned together how to live as women in a changing world. We taught each other grace and tolerance and feminism.”
A Legacy Driven by Education
As part of the three-generation Paulett family legacy, Mary Jo exemplifies all things

Beaumont. Her mother, Margaret Martin Paulett ’46, was a member of the first class to graduate from the Cleveland Heights campus and instilled in her and her brothers and three sisters the importance of education. Her sisters are also Beaumont graduates:
Margaret Paulett Lubis ’78, Kathy Paulett Sberna ’80, Suzanne Paulett Richter ’90. Her nieces have attended Beaumont, with several here currently:
Katie Paulett ’05, Briana Paulett ’18,
Elizabeth Paulett ’24, Rachel Paulett ’24, and Maggie Richter ’25
An Evening of Celebration
During this year’s gala event, Mary Jo was presented the Beaumont Award by President Hoke. “It has been hard for me to separate this award from mom, Margie Martin Paulett ’46. She loved Beaumont and spent many of her favorite days on this campus. She worked hard to make sure her daughters had a
Beaumont education. And though she didn’t always understand the changing world and the opportunities it offered us, she was confident that Beaumont would prepare us for what was to come. She would be proud tonight. But not just of me. She would be proud of all her kids and grandkids and their accomplishments,” said Mary Jo. “How amazing this life can be if we are open to the gifts offered to us. And Beaumont has been one of life’s best gifts.”

DINING HALL DEDICATION
On March 16, the Beaumont community gathered for the dedication of the new Sister Margaret Ann Kelley Dining Hall, affectionately known as the MAK. We were joined by lead donors, Steve and Debbie Klug and family, many Ursuline Sisters, members of the Kelley family, Board members, generous donors, friends, and staff.
Father Lucas Laniauskas, from Church of the Gesu, blessed the new space and Sister Cheryl Mentkowski offered a special tribute in Sister Margaret Ann’s honor. Graduating from Beaumont in 1949, Sister Margaret Ann later taught theology and served as Beaumont Principal from 1986-1990 and Beaumont President from 1991-1997. Her leadership was an inspiration to Steve and Debbie Klug. We know Sister Margaret Ann’s Irish Eyes were smiling down on all of us!

THE HEART OF BEAUMONT CAMPAIGN
LAUNCH OF THE PUBLIC PHASE:
MAK DINING HALL & BEAUMONT BISTRO Dear Friends,
At Beaumont School, we know what it takes to educate young women for the future: exceptional faculty, challenging academics, robust faith formation, and the rock-solid belief in the potential of all young women. We’ve proudly been doing so for nearly 175 years.
We have also learned from research, that the space in which we teach, model, and support these young women, must reflect the quality of the material, pedagogy, and faith formation. That is why we are so proud to launch The Heart of Beaumont Campaign
The campaign began quietly in June 2021 with a leadership gift from Steve and Debbie Klug. To date, we have renovated our kitchen and dining hall, now known as the Sister Margaret Ann Kelley Dining Hall, and installed the St. Angela Merici Field, a regulation-size turf athletic field designed specifically for women athletes.
But we’re not done yet. I am counting on your support to help us complete Phase 1 of The Heart of Beaumont Campaign. Join us in building the next community of women leaders.

CAREER DAY
Career Day at Beaumont has been a tradition for over the past 20 years. What started as a career exploration morning for sophomores has evolved into an all-day, all-school event each spring. This beloved tradition brings back alumnae to campus to share not only their work experiences but their life experiences. Students hear firsthand about the value of a Beaumont education and begin to form relationships that will carry them into life after graduation.
Alicia McLean, junior and senior guidance counselor, has helped to plan Career Day since 2013. “The purpose of Career Day was for our current students to explore fields that either they were interested in or to learn more about fields that they were not as familiar with. And who better to do this than their sisters who walked in their shoes in prior years at Beaumont.”
Career Day provides the opportunity for students to make connections with alumnae and in many cases gain valuable internships.
As McLean notes, “It gives our students confidence to see the great and varied careers of past Beaumonsters. It also allows our alumnae to connect back to a place they love and give back with their time and expertise.”
Karen McHenry ’84, Program Director of Bellefaire’s Homeless and Missing Youth Program and longtime Career Day participant shared, “I love seeing the students’ enthusiasm to engage about how to support the vulnerable youth and families.
Clearly, the mission of Beaumont is alive and well. These girls are developing a strong sense of compassion for others and are well prepared to make a difference in the world.”
One of the highlights of the event is the panel discussion. After a morning of alums leading individual discussions about their careers with students, an all-school question-and-answer session panel is full of favorite Beaumont stories shared by the alumnae. By the end, both students and alumnae are often laughing and celebrating together their Beaumont journeys.

18 BEAUMONT NEWS I A MAGAZINE FOR ALUMNAE AND FRIENDS OF BEAUMONT SCHOOL I SUMMER 2023 BEAUMONT IN THE WORLD
The Lasting Legacy of COACH EMERY
Our hearts were heavy as we learned the news that legendary Beaumont cross country and track & field coach Jim Emery passed away this past March.
Coach Emery came to Beaumont in 1990 and over the ensuing years has been the most accomplished coach in Beaumont Blue Streak history.
Of the 24 state championship team banners hanging in our gym, 18 were coached by Jim Emery, including seven cross country – the second most by a girls’ school in Ohio High School Athletic Association history – and 11 in track and field. Beaumont has won 16 state track and field titles, which is the most by a girls’ team in the state of Ohio.
Coach Emery presided over 11 of those titles.
He has coached many individual/relay state champions, an NCAA national champion, and an Olympian. He was inducted into the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Beaumont School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019. He was given the Beaumont Award for leadership and service in 2016.
On any given day, Coach Emery could remember someone’s time down to the hundredth of a second. He maintained close friendships with many athletes long after their running careers were over, attending weddings and baptisms and other special events in the lives of his athletes. He and his dog, Oscar, were regulars throughout the halls of Beaumont. He presided over hallway practices, with his tattered navy ballcap and cup of coffee in hand. Coach Emery was always quick with a smile.
A legend at the annual Ohio State Track and Field Championship, Coach Emery could barely walk a few feet before someone would stop to chat with him. He produced state champions and knew what it would take over the course of the season to get his athletes ready to compete at the state level.
We know that he was watching from above as Beaumont finished their season strong heading back to the State Championship.

TO THE CLASS OF 2023
—Daphne Evans ’75
“Take the experience and memory of Beaumont everywhere you go. So many of our Class of ’75 members have managed to keep in touch with one another because Beaumont gave us the space to formulate great relationships.”
Courtney Young ’06
Courtney Young ’06 has been a familiar face in Blue Streak athletics as the assistant athletic director and assistant cross country coach for the past six years. This year she also stepped in as moderator of the Black Student Organization (BSO) and in the fall will share her skills in the classroom to teach African American Studies. If that wasn’t enough, she was recently named head varsity track & field coach.
Congratulations to Courtney!
Black Student Organization (BSO)
This year, Females Achieving Minority Excellence (FAME) was renamed Black Student Organization (BSO) to better reflect the student member population, the culture of the Beaumont community, and the direction of the club. Since the club’s founding, the main supporters and members have been Black, bi-racial, and other students of the African Diaspora. The club’s events and activities have always focused on Black/African American and African culture, and now the name best reflect these realities.
