Message from the President What does it mean to educate the whole student? I’ve been talking about this with students, parents and alums lately. This edition of the Beaumont News really takes a dive into all the ways Beaumont serves her students—mind, body and spirit. Our cover story encapsulates the best of Beaumont. The vision of alumna Rita Murphy Carfagna ’71 and her husband, Peter to support the academic, athletic and spiritual development of young women has been transformative, helping to rebuild our enrollment in the past few years. As true believers in Catholic education, they have challenged others to help support the young women of Beaumont through the Merici Challenge. To date, we’ve raised nearly $40,000 toward a goal of $50,000 to support scholarship. Learn more about our Merici Scholars, past and present on page 11, and how you can invest and support the young women of Beaumont.

The 40th anniversary of the martyrdom of Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU, will be December 2, 2020. This school year, Beaumont has embarked on a mission to get to know Sr. Dorothy and the model of courage and encounter that she represents. Learn more about this project on page 9. I will be traveling to El Salvador in November along with Director of Mission Integration Sr. Cheryl Mentkowski and look forward to this opportunity to connect spiritually with the missionaries and the people of El Salvador. Coach Carol Ferkovic Mack ’00 is much more than the physical therapist/athletic trainer for Blue Streak scholar-athletes; she is a teacher and an example of empowerment for our young women. More parents have told me, “Coach Mack is amazing with my daughter.” That’s because she takes the time to listen and then gives scholar-athletes the tools to strengthen and recover. Read about how Beaumont was the foundation for her work and philosophy on page 16. For the past four years, several Beaumont students have spent eight weeks of their summer working on biomedical research at the Harrington Discovery Institute, a collaborative between University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University. These young women are given the chance to run their own experiments, but also to experience a positive working experience. Read more about their impressive work on page 18. ▲ #BEAUMONTTRAVELS A group of Beaumont students spent two weeks in Avignon, France, with host families from St. Jo as part of our French Exchange Program. They were chaperoned by John Michael Langa, World Language Department Chair and French teacher, and Barb Sosnowski, retired Spanish teacher.
▲ PROJECT YESS Alayna Sturgill ’20 (left) and Nyomi Morris ’20 sailed on the Tall Ship S/V Denis Sullivan as part of Project YESS, a sailing program developed by the Rotary Club of Cleveland. They set sail from Milwaukee and arrived in Cleveland one week later as part of the working crew. They were greeted by local media upon arriving in The Port of Cleveland.
DIAMOND JUBILEE Sr. Martha Mooney and Sr. Susan Mary Rathbun celebrated their Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years of Ursuline ministry. We are enriched by all they’ve done for Beaumont, especially their nearly two decades of combined leadership through their service as Principals in the 80s and 90s. 4

▲ CHEF BO GOES TO WASHINGTON Our Chef Bo Mueller, his wife Adrienne, and their young son Geno went to Washington, D.C., this summer to advocate on behalf of Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital at the 2019 Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Day. Geno was born at 29 weeks at Cleveland Clinic with a severe heart defect and 10% chance of survival. Today, Bo says Geno “is a happy baby, running around playing with his brothers, throwing food at the dog. Geno just keeps going.” (Pictured with Ohio Senator Rob Portman.)

Grace Elhindi ’20 received a 1st place award for the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Advanced or Alternative Energy for her project, “The Effect of Mounting Angle and Convection Type on the Voltage Output of Photovoltaic Panels.” Grace was also recognized with a 4-Year Award and was named a Melvin Scholar this year for her work.
ENRICHMENT CAMP Beaumont welcomed 5th-8th graders to campus for our B Global, BeauArtz Enrichment, and Athletic Camps. Students did hands-on science, math, English, art, cooking, sewing classes, field trips, and sports over a two-week period.

Beaumont Golf finished sixth at the sectional tournament this year. Lauren Bangasser ’22 (above) advanced to the district tournament, where she shot 85 and tied for eighth in the field of 72 golfers. In the off season, Beaumont School named Denise Bangasser its new head coach.
The soccer program had a great turnaround season under second-year Coach Birdie Wargo. A year after finishing 2-11-3, the Blue Streaks outscored the opposition 46-29 while finishing the 2019 regular season at 10-5-1.
A gift from the Carfagna family (Peter, Rita ’71, and Anne ’04) with help from Boosters resulted in a facelift for the gym, new scoreboards, branded bench chairs, and a scorer’s table, along with our Hall of Fame Recognition Wall.
CORRECTION: Our Spring Issue incorrectly sited the 2019 Beaumont Golf team as the first to advance to the district tournament. Beaumont teams and individuals golfers have competed at the State level on many occasions.

Club Crew was invited to their first Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on October 20, 2019. Our Youth 4+ (front to back, coxed by Khaela Tierce ’22, Lizzie Kohler ’21, Ella Lisac ’21, Lauren Harmat ’22 and Alayna Sturgill ’20) finished 63 out of 84 other teams in this event.

BEAUMONT ALL-SCHOOL READ:
WALKING WITH SR. DOROTHY KAZEL, OSU The English and Theology departments developed a reading guide which was shared with the students and faculty. Sr. Dorothy was a guidance counselor at Beaumont from 1972-1974. Before she was a martyr who suffered an unimaginable fate, she walked the halls as we do today, meeting with students, helping them through their days and wondering if she was not made for something more. Members of the Beaumont community were given a copy of the book at the end of the last school year and read the biography over the summer. Every student, faculty member, staff member, and administrator was asked to meet and get to know Sr. Dorothy through the pages of the book. The Faculty/ Staff Opening Retreat gave each department time for prayer and reflection on how Sr. Dorothy’s model of courage and encounter can be an example for all.
History must be taught and shared in order to be remembered. In honor of the approaching 40th anniversary of the brutal death of Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU and her three companions in El Salvador on December 2, 1980, the Beaumont community is learning about the life of Sister Dorothy. Sr. Cheryl Mentkowski, OSU, Director of Mission Integration at Beaumont, had proposed an all-school read of Sr. Dorothy’s biography, “In the Fullness of Life: A Biography of Dorothy Kazel, OSU,” by Cleveland Ursuline Sister Cynthia Glavac.
“Sr. Dorothy’s life and ministry provide great examples of how to listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our lives and respond to the call to put ourselves in service of the Gospel wherever we are,” says Sr. Cheryl. “Reading about Sr. Dorothy gives an example of courage, commitment, and fearlessness by an ordinary person, and
shows our students that they too can live a life of service.” All of our school days end with a call and response: St. Angela, watch over our days. St. Ursula, protect our future. Sr. Dorothy Kazel, walk with us. Teachers are using the book and its lessons in their classrooms throughout the year. Students will hear from the Ursuline Sisters who served in El Salvador with Sr. Dorothy. Adult education opportunities are also being planned. Sr. Cheryl and President Wendy Hoke will be traveling to El Salvador in November to plan a trip for Beaumont students beginning in June 2020. Next fall, the Beaumont Drama Club will be presenting a play about the life of Sr. Dorothy. “We are following Sr. Dorothy’s example of how to love and care for the people we serve in whatever way we encounter them each day,” says Sr. Cheryl.

MERICI CHALLENGE The spirit and charism of St. Angela Merici, a model for Christian womanhood and the religious education of young women, has long-inspired Rita Murphy Carfagna ’71 and Peter Carfagna. Since 2013 they have built the Merici Scholarship Program, named for St. Angela, at Beaumont School and now they are the inspiration to expand the program further. Merici Scholars are young women who are well-rounded, academically strong, spiritually engaged, and involved in at least one extracurricular activity. Since its inception, the Carfagna’s faith-filled generosity has supported nearly 100 Beaumont students, serving an important role in the growth of Beaumont’s enrollment over the past three years. 10
�We’ve been long-time supporters of Ursuline education at Beaumont. We believe in and support the important academic, athletic and spiritual development young women receive through their Catholic education here,” said Rita Carfagna. �We know that the Merici Scholarship Program helps to make this exceptional Beaumont education accessible to more young women, changing their lives forever.” Past Merici Scholars are attending universities such as Cornell, Georgetown, Boston College and MIT. Current Merici Scholars are varsity athletes, thespians, student council leaders and a voice and helping hand for those in need. They are the young women who will change the world.

MEET SOME OF OUR MERICI SCHOLARS: Corporate Food & Beverage and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in the Baking & Pastry Arts, is getting settled following her move to the Washington, D.C. area. While in high school, Cierra enthusiastically participated in the National Honor Society, National French Honor Society, Fashion Club, and Beaumont Entrepreneur Club. Post Beaumont, she wore many hats as Teaching Assistant for Restaurant Management, Food Safety Tutor, Treasurer for NSMH and her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Curriculum Development Assistant for a consulting firm, Student Advisory Council member for the Cornell Tradition Fellowship and member of Phi Sigma Pi Honor Fraternity and Order of the Omega.
MADYSON TREHARNE ’22 Madyson is an active sophomore with big ambitions and worthy goals. Maydson represents Beaumont to our incoming freshman as an Ambassador who helps ease the transition into high school and serves as a role model. She is a pole vaulter on Beaumont’s Track & Field team. Madyson is concerned about social justice and has started her own foundation, Project Leave-Behind. In partnership with Disney and other hotels across the country, Madyson’s foundation donates clothing left behind at hotels to homeless, poor, and less fortunate. As part of her participation in the Beaumont community, Madyson is also a member of Student Council, Academic Scholars, Drama Club, Enviromental Science Club, and Literary Magazine.

KATIE BAGLEY ’20 CIERRA BENSON ’14 Cierra Benson ’14, a recent graduate of Cornell University with a concentration in
Katie is a strong senior leader and IB Diploma Candidate. She on the Executive Board of Student Council running programming and events, and giving
morning announcements. She is a leader in Peer Ministry executing class retreats, service projects, all-school prayer services, and liturgies. She uses her strong leadership skills and interest in STEM as an active member of Be@utech and the Robotics Team which has placed in the top three spots during her time at Beaumont. Katie’s leadership can be found on the athletic field as well. She earned a spot on the U.S. Lacrosse 2019 Girls High School All-Academic Team, one of just 11 selections from the Ohio – North Coast Region.
LINDSEY CLARK ’17 Lindsey Clark ’17 was the Valedictorian of her class. Her many accolades while at Beaumont include: Phi Beta Kappa awardee, Swim Team and Lacrosse Captain, Academic Scholars, National Honor Society, National French Honor Society, Honors Diploma, BBB “Celebration of Integrity” scholarship award winner, and member of Beaumont’s winning CLETeen Hack Coding team. Lindsey is now a junior at Georgetown University, majoring in Economics and minoring in Mathematics and History. At Georgetown, Lindsey is an Economics Teaching Assistant, an editor for the Georgetown Undergraduate Law Review, and a social chair for Georgetown Women in Leadership. She is currently spending a semester abroad at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, where she is studying the role of education in social, economic, and political inequalities.

BEAUMONT SUMMER SOIRÉE Beaumont’s Summer Soirée came back to the Beaumont campus on June 8 this year featuring music, food, singing, auction items, and a Beaumont’s Fund-a-Need initiative – the Sister Ann Wojnar Digital Innovation Lab. COACH CAROL FERKOVIC MACK ’00 From Beaumont Blue Streak to Beaumont Athletic Trainer “Beaumont’s philosophy as a whole empowered me.” — Coach Carol Mack ’00
When Junior Shannon Blankenship tore her ACL last year, she had more than the physical injury to overcome before getting back on the basketball court. She had to overpower her doubts mentally, something she wasn’t confident she could do initially. It was Coach Carol Ferkovic Mack ’00, Beaumont’s Athletic Trainer, who challenged her to push beyond her comfort zone. Even when Shannon herself didn’t believe she could do more, Coach Mack knew better. “Injuries are tough,” admits Coach Mack. “Healing has a physical component but it’s the mental game that can keep you on the bench if you don’t address it, too. The first thing to do is keep the athlete involved with their team as much as possible. I celebrate the little wins with the students. Things like 16
getting off crutches, being able to run again. We set realistic, small goals that get us to where we want to go. I let students vent to me as well because injuries are frustrating. Then we get right back to work pushing through.” This is the kind of magic Coach Mack brings to Beaumont’s Sport Medicine. When Athletic Director Tim Ertle started in 2017, he discovered on his first day that the sports medicine staff from the previous school year had left. “We were so lucky to land Coach Mack – someone who played at Beaumont, played collegiately, was our JV Soccer Assistant Coach for several years, and is well-respected professionally – to train our athletes. She’s been an integral member of the athletic department since coming aboard. The girls love her and I love working with her.”
Working with her is easy in part because she always has a plan for the students. “A strong female athlete is competitive and confident in her abilities while also empowering her teammates,” says Coach Mack. “Most of our athletes come to me with a goal – play collegiate sports, make varsity, become a starter, etc. I help them break down that goal into short-term things they need to accomplish. So if it’s getting stronger or faster, I make a plan to get them there.�

AN EXPERT IN THE INDUSTRY Outside the walls of Beaumont, Coach Mack has a stellar reputation in the industry, as the testament from a former colleague, Dr. Benjamin Geletka, PT, DPT, University Hospitals, proves. “She is an absolute asset when it comes to sports and orthopedic rehab as a physical therapist, but to have her in the role of strength and conditioning coach as well is just unbelievable.” Basketball Coach Derrick Russell couldn’t agree more. “On strength and conditioning Carol is like having another member on my staff. She and I bounce ideas off one another and she creates a structured program to help the girls train. We’re a perfect team.” She works in the same capacity with Beaumont’s soccer, tennis, and volleyball coaches. It is Coach Mack’s understanding of what is facing today’s female athletes that makes her an invaluable part of the Beaumont community. “There’s a lot of pressure on girls today, and I’m often asking them to try new things – new lifts or difficult workouts. I want them to know that even if they don’t do as well as they’d like, they will get better if they put in the work. Doing the hard things no one wants to do is what will make a Beaumont student stand out.” Shannon Blankenship can attest to this from her successful recovery of her ACL injury and her conditioning work with Coach Mack. “She empowers us to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. It’s not just going up 5 pounds in a tough set, it’s a metaphor for life. She is teaching us, as young women, to be brave enough to be what we want to be and have the ability to adjust to whatever life throws our way.” HOW DID A BEAUMONT ALUMNA GET HERE? As a Beaumont student, Coach Mack played soccer and was in Studio Art for four years. She thought she was going to be a Graphic Designer out of college but she credits Mary Grimaldi, Beaumont’s Director of College Counseling, for the career that she is in because she helped her apply to Duquesne University’s Physical Therapy program.

When I was in college, Duquesne changed their physical therapy program. We had the option to stay in our current (master’s) program or switch to their new doctoral program. The choice was easy. I couldn’t face coming back to Beaumont and telling my teachers I didn't take the highest opportunity given to me. I went for the doctoral program.” Today Coach Mack owns her own business, CLE Sports PT & Performance, and is a nationally renowned expert in Sports Medicine. You can tell she knows what she’s doing by her titles: Doctor of Physical Therapy, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, Board Certified Specialist – Sports Physical Therapy, Precision Nutrition Certified. What’s more impressive is how well respected and loved she is by coaches, parents, peers, the Athletic Director, and most importantly, by the student-athletes. Shawn Blankenship, Shannon’s father, points out, “As parents and student athletes decide where to send (or transfer) their daughters to school, athletic training support is an area of importance for many. Having Coach Mack to lead this department at Beaumont means having a better opportunity to attract elite-level student athletes to our school.”

ACADEMIC SCHOLARS CONDUCT BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH THROUGH SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AT
HARRINGTON DISCOVERY INSTITUTE
Beaumont’s Academic Scholars sent its fourth cohort of students to the Harrington Discovery Institute (HDI) as interns this summer. Beaumont students are the only students offered this outstanding opportunity to work at the HDI. This program was introduced to Academic Scholars Director Gretchen Santo by Natalie Haynes, former Program Director at HDI and parent of Parker ’20. For eight weeks during the summer our students work with mentors on research led by Dr. James Reynolds and team leaders from HDI/University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve conducting hands-on research in the lab. The summer program pairs each student with team leaders at HDI to assist with their research projects to advance medicine, and is overseen by Edwin Pacheco Colón, MS, MBA, Research Assistant 4 / Lab Manager for James D. Reynolds, PhD, Institute of Transformative Molecular Medicine (ITMM) Clinical Researcher, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Each day our students conduct research, run labs, and document their findings. At the end of the summer, the students present their 18
findings to Dr. Reynolds, team leaders, and the Harrington family for which the institute is named. While the real-world experience in the lab confirmed for most of the students their own interest in pursuing careers in the medical field, they also learned valuable life skills that go beyond the lab. Amanda Desamito ’20 summarized one of those lessons best. “At the beginning, I was unsure of my actions and I made mistakes along the way, but my mentor and peers assured me that making mistakes is part of the research process. In

research, you don’t always get your desired results, so it is completely acceptable to make a mistake, start over, and reconfigure. This lesson impacted me because it can apply to my everyday life. As humans, we are not perfect and, of course, not everything will go exactly as we want it to. It’s perfectly okay to make mistakes throughout life. Mistakes will make you think. They might redirect you to a different path, maybe even lead you to something better than what you originally wanted. Without making mistakes, we would never learn.”

INTRODUCING THE SISTER ANN WOJNAR, OSU
DIGITAL INNOVATION LAB Construction is underway for renovation of the Sister Ann Wojnar Digital Innovation Lab, so named by a lead gift from an anonymous donor. The renovated space of this student-centered environment will be adaptable to expanded course offerings and evolving student needs, featuring updated technology infrastructure, devices, software and applications. Students will find a collaborative space with different types of work stations and charging stations for their own devices. Faculty from all departments will be able to schedule time in the lab for research or collaborative project work. The Digital Innovation Lab will also house a podcasting studio, adaptable for small-group collaborative work and a video editing suite. The International Baccalaureate program opens the door to new course offerings that explore how computer and data science impact industries, cultures and individuals. This reimagined space also gives our Studio Art students, musicians, data scientists, and journalists a creative new space to explore use of technology through their coursework, clubs and projects. Today, women are vastly underrepresented in technology fields. And yet, the history of computer science is replete with women pioneers. From Ada Lovelace, the British mathematician who in the 1880s was known as the first computer programmer to the women coders who worked to break the Enigma code leading to the end of World War II, women have led innovation. Named for Sr. Ann Wojnar, OSU, whose example of bold faith and dynamic adaptability pioneered—and still leads today— computer education at Beaumont, this project was entirely supported through philanthropy. It will be operational beginning in January. A dedication is being planned for spring.

2019 PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS AND ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME WINNERS ANNOUNCED The newest class of Beaumont School’s Athletic Hall of Fame and Presidential Awards winners were recognized on Friday, September 20 as part of Homecoming Weekend on campus. The awards were presented by President Wendy A. Hoke and winners were introduced by their nominating representatives. You can watch the ceremony online at www.beaumontschool.org.
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS COACH Coach Jim Emery, our second coach inducted into the Beaumont Athletic Hall of Fame, is being recognized for his commitment to Beaumont Cross Country and Track & Field over the past 28 seasons. He is dedicated to his runners’ success, planning and strategizing for them even after practices and meets and long after the season has ended. Coach Emery’s many accomplishments include, in Track & Field: coaching, motivating and training over 60 All-Ohio athletes with 24 State Championship appearances. He coached 11 of Beaumont’s 16 state titles, 3 state runner-up finishes, and has the most state titles won in four events: the 4x800m relay, 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. In Cross Country, Coach Emery coached 15 All-Ohio athletes, made 16 State Championship appearances, coached all 7 of Beaumont’s state titles, had 8 regional championships, and 7 district championships and coached one future Olympian. He created a culture of excellence at Beaumont in both sports, and has been the standard of success for other coaches in the area and throughout Ohio.
INDIVIDUAL Lesley Monachino Bertin ’02, was a varsity golfer ranked #1 from her freshman through senior year, and was the first Beaumont golfer to qualify for the state tournament and medal in 10 of 12 tournaments Beaumont played in Fall of 2001. Her accomplishments include: 2001 Plain Dealer Girls Player of the Year and Plain Dealer North Coast Junior Tour Player of the Year, 3-time Player of the Week (1999, 2000, 2001), Most Outstanding Freshman, Golf 1998, Beaumont Golf MVP 3 years (1999, 2000, 2001) and Team Captain 2000 and 2001. Lesley was First Team All Ohio, placed 5th overall at the Ohio State Tournament, and 2nd overall at the Sectional Tournament. Lesley went on to play Division 1 Golf at the University of Richmond for all of her four years.
TEAM State Championship Cross Country Team 1999, coached by Jim Emery, won the District, Regional, and the State Championship in the Fall of 1999. This talented team comprised a group of 10 exceptional young women, eight of whom were freshmen. The raw talent of these novice runners combined with leadership of the few upperclasswomen created strong bonds that sustained through the season and beyond graduation. This special group of young women repeated their titles in 2000 as well. Continued on page 22

BEAUMONT AWARD WINNERS SR. CHERYL MENTKOWSKI, OSU Sr. Cheryl Mentkowski, OSU, who entered the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland in 1981, came to Beaumont as a Theology and Social Studies teacher in 1985. She has spent her entire academic career, 36 years, at Beaumont serving in a variety of capacities. She was a long-time member of the Social Studies Department and teaching primarily classes in American History and American Government. Her wide-ranging roles at Beaumont have included: Senior Class Moderator, Junior and Senior Homeroom Teacher, Social Studies Department Chairperson, Liturgy music and song leader, Fathers’ Club Moderator, Project Real Coordinator, Director of All-School Fundraising Drive, Principal’s Advisory Committee member, and as a Member of Academic and Spirituality Committee of the Beaumont Board of Directors. Her most memorable roles include: playing Rhett Butler in a skit to boost candy sales for the all-school fundraiser, songwriter and chief cheerleader for Beaumont sports and academic groups headed for state competitions, honing her trivia skills as the Academic Challenge advisor, a brief stint as Director of the Drama program and serving as NHS Advisor for 22 years (and counting). Sr. Cheryl currently serves as Director of Mission Integration at Beaumont. Sr. Cheryl was an integral part of our recent fundraising effort at the Summer Soirée, using her unparalleled storytelling skills to create a vision for donors and a historical reference with which to understand Beaumont’s need for an updated computer lab and technology suite. She helped catapult the evening’s donations to our highest benefit fundraising total to date.
SR. ANN WOJNAR, OSU Ursuline Sisters have always been forward thinking in providing advanced education for the sisters who taught in their schools. Sr. Ann Wojnar has been one of Beaumont’s most forward-thinking educators since she began at Beaumont in 1982. She pursued a degree in Computer Science at Columbia University in New York, and armed with her Ivy League education recognized an entirely new approach in acquiring, storing, and transmitting information. Sr. Ann set out to convince the Beaumont administration that computer technology was the wave of the future and should be integrated into the Beaumont curriculum at all levels. At that early date, few administrators would have the foresight, not to mention the budget, to fund a transition from the established typewriter/encyclopedia/mimeograph machine method to this new computer technology. However, in true Ursuline fashion and with the support of then Beaumont principal, Sr. Margaret Ann Kelly, Sr. Ann used the famed Ursuline strategy referred to as dynamic adaptability. She found a way to fund her vision by engaging in a bit of “imaginative entrepreneurship.” Recognizing that Beaumont students at the end of a long school day require sustenance, she created a unique round sandwich board and went to the epicenter of all Beaumont activity—The Foyer—dressed as an M & M and sold boxes of M & M’s candy to the student population every day after school. With the money she earned she created the first Beaumont computer room one computer at a time. Sr. Ann, even with her reserved and private nature, moved Beaumont into the computer age and established a standard of innovation, persistence and creativity, which are hallmarks of an Ursuline education. The computer lab which Sr. Ann created through a combination of ingenuity and grant writing has prepared thousands of Beaumont women for their lives and careers. Truly, Sr. Ann followed the vision of St. Angela as a living example of her mission, to change the world around you for the better.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA RECIPIENT Dr. Rita Hanna Pappas ’84, is our Distinguished Alumna for her dedication to service and leadership. She serves the Cleveland Clinic Pediatric Institute and her patients in the highest leadership role, overseeing 350 physicians and 1,000 care specialists. She was one of only two female Institute Chairs at the Cleveland Clinic. Rita is an advocate for children in the State of Ohio and was pivotal in working with our state legislators to pass CHIP (Children’s Hospital Insurance Plan). CHIP is now in place to help families that are not able to cover all of the costs of their children’s health care bill. She is a supportive mentor who guides with her strong faith. Her family and the people she works with every day seek her guidance both personally and professionally. She is a true leader who is generous with her time, leading many to call her a friend. As a Beaumont parent (Hanna Pappas ’19), Rita is an avid fan of the Blue Streak basketball team and has spoken to the student-athletes about women in leadership. She has been a Career Day presenter sharing her journey from the nursing profession through medical school and becoming a physician. Beaumont is proud to include Dr. Rita Pappas in the company of our most distinguished alumnae.
