Child Care Services Supervisor Update National Child Day is on November 20th and we have planned our celebration for that date! Details to be emailed out soon.

This year we are excited to celebrate a Child’s Right to IDENTITY!!

On November 19TH, our 5 MacEwan students will be returning to complete their four week block placement at the ELCC. They all came for orientation week October 15-19, so we are excited to have them return.

Every other Friday, students from JE Lapointe school next door to ELCC have been visiting us for 30-40 minutes to read stories and play games with the children in every room or at the park. This has been a great partner-ship with the school and it is fun to see some of the children we took care of years ago re-visiting the center!

Congratulations to Karissa George from the SAS who had a baby boy on October 14th. Pryce Hutt George was 5ilbs 3oz and is doing great with big brother Grayson helping out!

Also, Congratulations to Jamie Greene who also worked at the SAS and had her baby boy on October 21st. Big brother Nixon was proud to show off pictures of his baby, Kyler David Scott weighing 8lbs 7oz.

Time is really passing by fast in the sunshine room as we all are getting to understand our new environment and adjusting to the routine .The children have now familiarized themselves with the room and part of the routine. One routine they seem to have quickly caught on to is Teen Center time .This seems to be their new favorite place to explore as they challenge their gross motor skills .They have been showing us that they enjoy risky play especially climbing and leaping off many surfaces. With this in mind, we have planned our program around giving the children many opportunities to continue developing their gross motor skills in a safe environment. The children are exploring Balance as they jump on a trampoline, walking on textured disks, walking through tires etc. They are also enjoying Climbing on soft blocks, up and down stairs, climbing and sliding down ramps. We have come to realize that we have quite a few athletes in the room as they throw, kick, run etc.

We are doing a lot of communication with the children. We have introduced sign language coupled with verbal communication. We have sent home a small booklet with each child with the sign language illustrations for your reference so you may understand what they are saying .Research shows that sign language speeds up language development, reduces frustration in young ones by giving them a means to express themselves before they know how to talk.

Gentle Reminders  Snowy and wet weather seems to be have arrived please send in water proof mittens so your little ones can fully enjoy exploring outdoors  Please remember to label their belongings so their clothing does not get mixed up.

It’s crazy to think that October has come and gone, this month we got to experience all of the four seasons. We were so excited about the snow and had so much fun exploring in our park, we really like tasting it too! When we got to experience summer again the children were so happy that all they had to wear outside was their outside shoes and hats after many weeks of full snow gear, although this confused them a little bit as the weather quickly changed again and finally we were able to explore fall. The leaves finally fell off of our tree and the children were so excited to play in them and move the fallen leaves around our park. We brought out the big rake so we could collected all the leaves together; the children jumped in them, rolled in them and threw them into the air. We have a great documentation board all about this up in the room, when you have a chance come in and take a look!

We continued our exploration of movement this month and we focused a lot on moving our bodies and the different ways we can do this. The children continued to show us their interest in balancing and we moved this into our gross motor time by adding different kinds of balancing beams for the children to walk across as well as bringing out the rocking horses so they were able to balance their entire bodies as they rocked back and forth. In our room we explored using small buckets, tongs and shovels to move objects around our sand table and sensory bins. We also discovered that the children really like singing and listening to action songs, we are continuing to explore this interest during our circle times and transition times throughout the day.

Just a quick reminder as the winter season will soon be among us again please insure that your child’s outside gear is labeled to reduce the amount of mix ups during the day. We encourage the children to get ready as much by themselves as they can and sometimes this results in all of their clothing and outside gear being taken out of their cubbies so they can find everything that they need.

Welcome to November! Everyone loved the fall weather in October as we got to visit many parks, explore the skate park and go on walks. Walking safely in a group was a goal for the room and the children have been doing an excellent job. Last month, we started visiting the library every two weeks to choose new books for the room. The Rainbow room children love to be active and moving so we have been learning new games and action songs. One of their favorites is the song “Pick bananas” which ends with everyone “going bananas!”

Nixon welcomed his baby brother, Kyler on October 21st and everyone was excited to see pictures and talk with Nixon about him. On November 7th, Austin will turn 3! Happy Birthday Austin!

Our focus for November will continue to be on movement. We are planning to take the Sunshine room for a walk in their big stroller, check out the school bus, and take turns pulling each other in the wagon. We are expecting the cold weather to arrive soon, please ensure your child has winter clothing at the centre.

Just a reminder that toy day is on Friday’s and to check the white board daily for any additional activities.

Crisp air, pretty leaves, fresh snow, pumpkins and pinecones - we love fall!

Indeed, we do love this beautiful season, during which Mother Nature uses her full palette of colors, including white this year. Throughout this chilly but colorful October, the Gold Room children have enjoyed the weather to its absolute fullest by participating in daily visits to community parks, the library, and our playground.

Some of the more exciting activities in October were building a giant slingshot, raking leaves at The Elephant Park, rolling giant snowballs together and simply enjoying our park.

On two occasions the J.E. LaPointe students came to read and play with us. They spent mornings in the classroom reading, connecting and socializing with the Gold Room children. These occasions help teach the children how to become responsible and active citizens in the community, as well as how to fill the age gaps between themselves and others. The visiting students and their teacher made many great comments regarding our children's attention spans, manners and behaviors.

Over the past month we welcomed Bronte, the Grant McEwan student on her practicum who spent time observing, making connections and playing with the children. She is coming back in mid-November for four weeks.

Our planning has been centered on exploring our room centers, trains, as well as building and constructing with Lego.

Our first skating day will be on November 7, from 10:30am to 11:30am, parents are welcome to join us.

October seems to have come and gone in the blink of an eye! We have been enjoying as much time as we possibly can outdoors before the cold weather really hits. We have had a very busy and exciting month with the children as we explored their ever growing interest in building. Whether we are using large materials or small materials, indoors or outdoors, building and constructing has definitely been evident in all areas of our room. This interest has allowed us to see the children work independently on projects as well as develop strong communication and teamwork skills as they work together on larger building projects!

We wanted to ask that at the end of the day when we are at the park, please ensure that you are somehow communicating with the staff that your child is being picked up, whether we have a conversation, or just a simple wave, so that we are aware your child has been picked up. We have noticed a few instances where children are leaving with a parent, either through the gate or getting picked up over the fence and there is no acknowledgment made to the staff. At this busy time of day we are often busy communicating with another parent or engaged with the children, and it ensures the safety of all when we are made aware of these quick departures of the children. Thank you for your cooperation.

SCHOOL AGE SITE

This month seemed to be the month of experiments. First we made pumpkin boats out of mini pumpkins.

There was a lot of trial and error along with discussions on how they were going to make adjustments so that they would actually float.

We made fizzy pumpkins using vinegar to dissolve our pumpkins with eye droppers. Next we made pumpkin moon sand and the children had lots of fun making characters using pipe cleaners and googly eyes. We painted mini pumpkins and some even designed and carved their own pumpkin faces on pumpkins that Jasmine’s sister donated to us. Thank you so much for the pumpkins the children had a blast but it was a lot of works carving them out and removing all the seeds. We even made pumpkin tarts for afternoon snack.

We did a “Guess how many Pumpkin Seeds” contest. actual number was 267. Congratulations Seth.

One morning a group of children helped make “Scary” the scarecrow who just sits in a chair watching us throughout the day. We still walk by it thinking that it is another children in the room.

The book club winner for the month is Avry S. Congratulations and everyone keep up the great work. We are looking to expand our book club by adding an “Author of the Month” and/or “Topic of the Month” SAS
