It’s budget time again and Council is seeking your comments and feedback.

Council will consider adopting the 2017 Capital, Operating and Utilities budgets on December 13 and we want to hear your opinion on the proposed budgets.

A public Budget Workshop was held November 4, 5 and 6 and Beaumont will now host two open houses where residents will have an opportunity to review the budgets, provide input and ask questions. Dates, times and locations of the open houses are listed below. In addition, the budget information will be on display in Council Chambers at the Town office from November 29 to December 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A summary of residents’ comments from the open houses will be presented at the December 13 Council meeting, along with recommendations for the Proposed

Schedule of Fees and Charges, as well as the Operating, Capital and Utility budgets. At that time Council may adopt the budgets, adjust and adopt, or defer the process to a subsequent meeting of Council.

The budget open houses are your opportunity to view the proposed budgets and ask questions or get more details.

The budget open houses will detail the initiatives and projects Beaumont plans to undertake in 2017. The proposed budgets will be posted online at www.beaumont.ab.ca/budget.

Upcoming Events Brighten Up Beaumont — Friday, November 25, 2016 A winter festival with horse-drawn sleigh rides, hot chocolate and oranges, Christmas carols, cookie decorating, crafts, ice sculptures, a visit from Santa, and fireworks!

Winter Lights Contest — December 2016 Beaumont’s annual residential lighting contest judges decorated houses on ‘buzz factor’ among other criteria. Contest winners are showcased online and in La Nouvelle Beaumont News.

50 Avenue Streetscape Beaumont is excited to present the preliminary design for the streetscaping of 50 Avenue. This project will continue to support the vision of the Centre-ville area. As per the goals and objectives in the Downtown Urban Design Concept Plan (DUDCP), 50 Avenue is another critical piece of infrastructure that will support the vision, enhance the area and set the stage for continued redevelopment activities.

The specific project goals of the 50 Avenue Streetscape are: • To foster a cultural space, attract and support business opportunities, celebrate history and preserve heritage while supporting redevelopment.

• To reinforce the image and sense of place that 50 Avenue means to Beaumont and its residents.

•

To align the vision and function of the streetscape design with high level planning documents such as Beaumont’s French Village Design Guidelines (FVDG), Downtown Urban Design Concept Plan (DUDCP) and Central Area Redevelopment Plan (CARP).

• To create a pedestrian friendly environment and promote safe pedestrian access and movement.

• To design for integration with adjacent land uses both today and in the future.

• To enhance aesthetics through tree placement, landscape, materials and street furniture.

• To align with existing streetscape on 50 Street while allowing for seamless expansion along other key routes in the DUDCP plan area.

Next Steps: • Workshop to be held in the first week of December.

• Construction is proposed for the 2018/2019 construction season (pending budget approval in 2017).

November Is Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta This year marks the 30th anniversary of Family Violence Prevention Month. The Alberta Legislature has been inspired to support family violence prevention as an ongoing provincial initiative, resulting in the creation of Family Violence Prevention Month. Today, hundreds of Alberta communities and thousands of individuals are actively involved in preventing family violence by providing public education and services.

Family violence is the abuse of power within relationships of family, trust or dependency that endangers the survival, security or well-being of another person. It can include spousal abuse (married or common-law), elder abuse and neglect, child abuse and neglect, child sexual abuse, parent abuse and exposure to abuse of others in the family. Everyone has a role in preventing family violence and promoting healthy relationships. No single organization or sector is going to solve this complex social issue alone.

Your local Family and Community Support Services is partnering with other local agencies to help community members get involved. The key to preventing family violence is raising awareness. We can all play a role in preventing family violence.

To help raise awareness for family violence in your community you can: 1. Sign the online pledge on the FCSS Facebook page at www.facebook.com/beaumontfcss.

2. Ask local businesses to display information about family violence prevention.

3. Participate in the Climb a Hill For Jill event on November 8.

November 20 is National Child Day This year we celebrate a Child’s Right to Belong.

National Child Day has been celebrated across Canada since 1993 to commemorate the United Nation’s adoption of two documents centered on children’s rights: the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959 and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989.

Canada has made a commitment to ensure that all children are treated with dignity and respect. This commitment includes the opportunity for children to have a voice, be protected from harm and be provided with their basic needs and every opportunity to meet their full potential.

Celebrating National Child Day is about celebrating children as active participants in their own lives and communities, and as active citizens who can meaningfully contribute to decision making.
