As I unveil the inaugural issue of BEAUJI, a dream years in the making, my heart swells with anticipation and gratitude.

This marks the beginning of a journey, not just for me as your Editor-in-Chief, but for every remarkable black woman who has ever felt the weight of the world on her shoulders and dreamt of a happier, more balanced existence filled with ease, enjoyment and luxury - not as distant rewards, but as everyday lifestyle practices.

For too long, the unfair expectations placed upon black women have forced us into a relentless cycle, where our value is unfairly tied to our unwavering strength and our willingness to endure pain and adversity. We've been trapped in the narrative of the "strong, independent black woman," celebrated for our ability to do everything for and by ourselves.

This continuous struggle has pushed many of us to the brink of physical and emotional exhaustion. It's as if our pain and suffering are put on a pedestal, romanticized as some sort of alluring prize. But let me be clear – now is the time we break free from this toxic cycle!

Let’s talk SELF-CARE ….

What does self-care look like for you? A better question is what does self-care look like for you around the holidays? What are you gifting yourself this year? Notice I said YOU and not everyone else. I know the holidays can be complete chaos and very lonely for some. There can be feelings of being lost or wanting companionship or just feeling less than. Social media comparisons can get the best of us. But I want you to take this moment to breathe.

This holiday season let's turn the focus to you….

“Self-Care is the art of taking care of SELF. Filling your own cup physically, mentally, and emotionally without the approval of others.”

Lights, Camera, Action!

I think the perfect gift for you this holiday would be a photoshoot. Often as women, we don’t see ourselves how others see us.

We can get dressed, put on clothes, take a few selfies, and feel really high on life, 10 | BEAUJI

but how often do we really put it on? I’m talking PUT IT ON. Like, we walk past the mirror and want to date our dang on selves, get our face beat, and let someone capture the most beautiful and sexiest moments of us within?

How often do we look at pictures and just smile at the glow we see in ourselves, the growth we see in us, the beauty behind the most painful scars in us? How many of us move through life freely and unapologetically without apologizing for our tiniest flaws? That’s rare. Yes, we take ourselves on dinner dates. Yes, we capture selfies here and there to post on social media with little cute captions, which is cool. But this Christmas, I want you to book that Self-Love/Self-Care shoot. I want you to wear that outfit you feel is too much or you’ve been too insecure to wear. I want you to wear that heel that speak volumes and add that stallion posture to you. I want you to go get your face beat DOOOOWWNNN like it’s your wedding day. I want you to buy yourself those flowers, stand in front of that camera, and own that shoot!

If you’re not ready to take that big of a leap, here are some other things you can do.

Date YOU This is big. Do you know how to date you? Have companionship with you?

Date you within YOUR love language and not anyone else’s? Even if you have a significant other, do you know how to just be by yourself in your own space without the comfort of others? If the answer is no, I challenge you to book a

trip to somewhere you have never been and go explore. Get dressed up and go to dinner.

Find a really cute, quiet place and go read and have your favorite glass of wine. Find something adventurous to do and make sure to capture the moments while you’re there.

Refuse to answer that phone call, text message or email (this is my favorite). You can’t be everything to everyone else if you are on E or even half full.

Set boundaries this season. If it does not include you, it doesn’t concern you. Fill yourself up, and when your cup runneth over set some to the side for a day you may be half empty. Self-care isn’t selfish.

Do what you gotta do for YOU. Love on YOU Sing it with me, “Real love, I’m searching for a real love, someone to set my heart free.

Real love, immmmmmmmmmmmmmmm searching for a REAL LOVE!” Sometimes it’s difficult to take a journey when you don’t quite know the destination.

And as crazy as it sounds, a lot of people don’t know what it looks like or feels like to love THEMSELVES. Today I want you to let go of the narrative of needing people, places and things to love you and make YOU feel loved and happy. Self-love is the BEST love. I challenge you not only this holiday season but each and every day to LOVE ON YOU, pour into you, speak life into you unapologetically and with no regrets! Nobody is going to love

you like YOU. You owe yourself the love that you give so freely to others. And just in case you need a reminder, you are BEAUTIFUL, fearfully & wonderfully made! You are the HEAD and not the tail.

You are ABOVE and not beneath. YOU are your biggest asset; everyone else is a liability!

God created you in the image of His likeness. Start walking like it, talking like it, and OWN IT! Pray for YOU (this is my favorite) Whew! I don’t even know where to start.

Let's cut to the chase. PRAY FOR YOU. I know. I know. We are supposed to pray for others. But have you ever thought that maybe this season the assignment is YOU? God wants you to love on you. He wants you to cast YOUR cares for you. He wants

to know the desires of YOUR heart. He wants to hear from YOU. So if you’re still reading, let’s pray: Dear God, To the beautiful woman on the other side of this page, I pray that you shower her with LOVE today. A love that is so unwavering. A love that brings her peace.

A love that brings her joy and happiness.

Help her to see herself how you see her.

Help her to see the power and authority that lies within her, which you created in the image of your liking. Help her to lean not into her own understanding in this season. Help her to pour into herself. I pray you perfect everything that is concerning her and shower her with all the desires of her heart. In Jesus name. AMEN! Girl, just throw it in the bag!

You read that right. How often do we buy what we want without guilt? If we

are being real and completely honest, we window shop A LOT. We will fill a Shein cart, Fashion Nova cart, and Amazon cart and never press CHECKOUT. We will go to the mall and see the cutest shoes, bag, or perfume and walk around the entire store with it and then get to the register and put it back. Why, when for someone else we will go above and beyond? Why can't we do the same for us? Let's change that. I challenge you every month to buy something that YOU really want and CHECKOUT! You deserve it, plus more.

Adjust your crown, Sis. Head up, chin up and boobies out! You are the one.

The Essence of Self-Care Self-care is not just a trendy buzzword; it's a vital aspect of maintaining your overall wellbeing. For Black women, the holiday season can be particularly stressful, with societal expectations and family responsibilities often weighing heavily on our shoulders. Therefore, embracing the concept of self-care becomes even more crucial. Here's how you can start: Recharge Your Spirit with Prayer Whether you're religious or simply believe in a higher power, prayer is a powerful practice that can provide you with a sense of calm and guidance during the holidays. 2. In a festive mug, combine the hot coffee, Peppermint Schnapps, and Chocolate Liqueur.

3. Stir well and top with a generous dollop of whipped cream.

WINTER WONDERLAND WHIMSY Ingredients: - 1 ½ oz Vanilla Vodka - 1 oz White Chocolate Liqueur - ½ oz Peppermint Syrup - 2 oz Half-and-Half - Ice - Crushed Peppermint (for rimming) Instructions: 1. Rim a glass with crushed peppermint by moistening the rim and dipping it into the crushed candy.

2. Fill the glass with ice.

3. In a shaker, combine Vanilla Vodka, White Chocolate Liqueur, Peppermint Syrup, and Half-and-Half.

4. Shake well and strain into the prepared glass.

5. Garnish with a sprinkle of crushed peppermint.

CRANBERRY CHEER FIZZ Ingredients: - 1 ½ oz Gin - ½ oz Elderflower Liqueur - 2 oz Cranberry Juice - Sparkling Water - Fresh Cranberries (for garnish) - Rosemary Sprig (for garnish) Instructions: 1. In a shaker, combine Gin, Elderflower Liqueur, and Cranberry Juice.

2. Shake well and strain into a glass filled with ice.

3. Top with sparkling water for a fizzy touch.

he "soft life" movement, born in the hearts of Nigerian influencers, has woven its way into the fabric of our existence, beckoning black women to embrace daily practices of ease, balance, and unabashed luxury. It stands as a counter to the relentless expectations that have long overshadowed the well-being and spirits of countless black women – a cultural ideal of ‘doing it all’ that has for years cast a shadow on their minds, bodies, and souls. Reveling on the throne of Nigerian elegance, Oluchi Madubuike, Miss World Nigeria 2021, stands tall as an icon of this radical era. Her impeccable sense of style has become a canvas for self-expression, confidence, and a vibrant celebration of individuality. With her crown now transformed into a platform that inspires black women across the globe, I had the privilege of sharing an intimate conversation with the Queen, unraveling the genuine beauty of her spirit and exploring the profound essence of embodying the soft life.

I had been eagerly anticipating this moment for weeks. The soft hum of the Zoom call echoed in the air, building palpable excitement as I watched her screen icon switch from "Connecting" to "Oluchi Madubuike." This was it, the 30 | BEAUJI

pivotal conversation that would mark the grand debut of BEAUJI Magazine, igniting a jubilation for black women and reshaping our perception of self-care.

Nestled on a plush sofa in her beautiful Texas home, Oluchi (as she preferred to be called) settled in, ready to dive deep in conversation about this phenomenon that has captured the hearts of black women everywhere – the soft life. As I sat in her company, graced by her presence, I revealed my own history as a former pageant queen, setting the atmosphere for an open and intimate conversation between two monarchs. With a sash and crown in hand, I couldn't resist the urge to adorn them. As I placed my sash across my shoulder and set my crown beside me, a silent understanding passed between us. Beyond the glitz and glamour, these symbols signified far more – they represented the grace and authenticity that every woman should be free to embrace not only on the pageant stage but also in the grand theater of life for boundless joy and fulfillment.

As our conversation unfolded, I couldn't help but feel that we were on the brink of something truly exceptional. This was no typical discussion. It was the genesis of a profound dialogue

poised to ignite the spirits of black women worldwide, those who secretly longed to shed their superwoman capes and savor the everyday luxury that the soft life offers.

The time had come to set the record straight about what it means to live the soft life, dispelling the misconceptions surrounding this movement, and unveiling the truth: that it is an achievable, valuable, and empowering journey for every black woman.

Oluchi's journey began in eastern Nigeria where she spent her formative years before her family moved to Oman. After four years in the Middle East, she returned to Nigeria to complete high school and then embarked on a new chapter in the United States where she pursued her college education and embarked on a rewarding career as an Emergency Room and Critical Care Nurse.

Oluchi’s interest in pageantry and the beauty industry stems all the way back to her childhood when she, alongside her late father, witnessed the historic moment of Agbani Darego being crowned as the first black African Miss World in 2001. This pivotal event ignited a passion that would drive her, twenty years later, to achieve a similar level of distinction and make a significant mark on the pageant world.

Oluchi’s involvement in pageants became an avenue to champion causes close to her heart, such as leukemia awareness and women's empowerment. But it was her experience participating in the Most Beautiful Girl Nigeria pageant (which she won) that opened her eyes to the potential and strength that women possess, thus encouraging her to become a catalyst for change and personal growth in the lives of women.

"I just want to encourage women and help them grow and become their best selves in every aspect of their lives," Oluchi emphasized. She firmly believes in the importance of personal development and finding balance in all areas of life, including spiritual, financial, emotional, and mental well-being. According to her, these aspects are not mutually exclusive, and women can thrive and excel in various domains while nurturing themselves.

We journeyed our conversation into the roots and essence of the soft life movement, deepening our understanding of this cultural phenomenon.

entrenched in the celebratory spirit of Nigeria. It all started as a reflection of the hardworking nature of Nigerian women and their desire to enjoy life after putting in so much effort.

When women started taking up space and doing things for themselves that afforded them certain lifestyles, they began seeking a life that matched their worth and success, transcending all societal norms.

The movement, she explained, became a celebration of life, the creation of moments for rest, and a nurturing of selflove. "We're a very celebratory culture and we love to have fun.

We love to enjoy ourselves. We work so hard. So, at the end of the day, we just want to live life."

It's such a huge thing in Nigeria to travel and take breaks and to have these little moments where you collect yourself. And I think now with our generation, we just pretty much put a title on it.”

As our conversation drew near an end, Oluchi had valuable advice for our BEAUJI readers seeking to infuse self-care in their daily routines and adopt a soft life mindset. A soft life, according to her, involves achieving balance and harmony in all aspects of life, ensuring that nothing is significantly lacking. allows individuals to show up for themselves as they do for others. This includes raising personal standards and being selective about what they accept from others. She also strongly advises aligning self-care practices with one's financial means and not going overboard to the point of regretting it.

Oluchi encourages finding ways to enjoy yourself within your budget, maintaining at all times financial stability and peace.

As for how she envisions the future of the soft life movement, particularly its impact on black women, Oluchi predicts the potential for a positive ripple effect. As black women unapologetically raise their standards and embrace a softer life, society's norms and expectations will evolve. This, she believes, will ultimately lead to the empowerment of not only black women but also the broader black community, setting a higher standard for the next generation.

The movement will be a catalyst for building financial freedom, fostering stronger conversations, and raising children in an environment of trust and abundance. With the embrace of the soft life, the black community is poised to redefine what it means to live a quality life and make impactful decisions, ultimately creating a legacy of joy and generosity.

The soft life is not a movement to pit anybody against each other. It’s for everybody, both men and women, to see themselves in the highest regard, enjoy the fruit of their labor, enjoy their life, do the things that make them happy, and show up as the person they've always envisioned.”

For moisturizing, opt for a rich, non-comedogenic cream, which will provide a protective barrier against the harsh elements. Don't forget your lips; a hydrating lip balm is essential. Gel-based or mineral sunscreens can be great options as well.

In a recent interview with ESSENCE, Tia Mowry, the renowned actress, entrepreneur, and influencer, unveiled her unapologetic commitment to self-care. Mowry, a beacon of self-love on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, is not just talking the talk; she's walking the walk with a dedication to promoting wellness, especially within her hectic lifestyle.

Juggling the roles of a mother to two children and managing multiple businesses, Tia emphasizes the need for scheduling and prioritizing me-time. Every week, she dedicates a specific day for herself, attending therapy sessions or indulging in float therapy—a profound form of meditation. Why Self-Care?

Self-care is everything to me. And I didn’t realize the importance until later on in life. I learned the hard way. I felt the effects of not providing myself adequate care and felt depleted from the narrative that we, Black women, must do it all.

Then I started to realize that, no, I don’t have to do it all. There is a thing called giving yourself grace, and there is a thing called forgiving yourself if you don’t check off everything on your to-do list. I also meditate.

And it’s not cliche to say you have to fill your cup so that you can be present for your children, be present for your job, and present for the multiple hats that you do tend to wear as a woman. That’s what I have been doing for the past couple of years and it’s been amazing. I’m not just talking about bubble baths, getting your nails done, getting your hair done; I’m also talking about mental health. That’s why I mentioned meditation, or, you know, even therapy. I have therapy once a week, and my kids know that mommy’s in therapy on Tuesdays at four. I used to feel guilty about it but not so much anymore because I see the benefits.

Breaking Taboos and Overcoming Guilt In our Black community, I feel like therapy is still very taboo. And I feel like we don’t talk about mental health enough. Sometimes growth and healing come with being vulnerable. Breaking down

and crying and allowing yourself to feel and heal, and therapy, helps with that. Religion and psychology sometimes don’t necessarily mix well within our community. I’m only speaking from personal experience because my mother is very religious. She was unhappy when I told her I was studying psychology or going to yoga.

I have a lot of self-help books, and she’s like, “Where’s your Bible?”

What’s great is my generation is becoming more aware of the benefits of therapy and how it coincides with religion. The person you should be going to is God and only God, which I do, and prayer is very important to me. But breaking down your traumas, understanding why you behave the way you do, why you’re a people pleaser, or why you see yourself repeating unhealthy and toxic patterns will teach you how to grow as a human being.

The Multifaceted Self-Care Routine I become aware of what I need and then unapologetic about it. I determine what will give me peace and happiness and to feel good mentally, physically, and spiritually, and then I do it.

First, it starts with that perspective. I love creating. I love creating content on TikTok and Instagram because what also makes me feel good is inspiring, encouraging, and sharing my journey. When I do that, my community fills my cup, and I fill theirs. When I’m creating content, I feel inspired and I’m having a good time. There’s a smile on my face.

Being Real and Transparent I am very open about crying in front of my children and showing them my natural state of emotions because I want them to understand that it’s normal not to be okay. It’s normal to be sad. And then for them to see that it doesn’t always stay. So it’s very important for me not to hide anything from my kids regarding real life because that’s how they learn and grow.

The Village and Gratitude I have an incredible village. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. My dad has

been an incredible force in my life. He’s always very present, asking me what I need. If I need for him to stay, you know, with Cree longer because my girlfriend just asked me to go out on a Friday night, he’s encouraging me to have that cocktail. I have incredible caretakers for Cairo, an amazing assistant who helps me with my scheduling, and she’s also very adamant about my self-care. The type of people you have in your village is important. I have incredible friends that are that constant. I don’t have many of them; it’s quality versus quantity. But I have friends who just check on me, or if they haven’t heard from me, all of a sudden flowers are delivered to my house or slippers with hearts that say “I love you.” I’m very grateful for my village.

Self-Care Specifics Tia shared her favorite indulgences during an interview with NewBeauty.com.

I’m a huge fan of candles. I’ll light candles around the house, especially when I’m winding down for the evening. It puts me in a mood.

I’ll have a candle going when I’m taking a nice bubble bath; I’ll have a candle going next to my bed. I am also a huge fan of essential oils, and I’ll have that going throughout my room or in the bathroom.

I’m also all about meditating, journaling, and reading. I just did this amazing self-love, selfcare traveling journey where I traveled alone for the first time. I went to Europe, Spain, London, and I did this incredible writer’s retreat with just women. It was amazing. I’m definitely on this journey of self-care and self-love right now. I feel like a different person. I do not feel like the same person that I was years ago. It’s beautiful.

Tia’s Advice for Curating Your Own Personal Self-Care Routine Don’t be afraid to start. You have to start somewhere. And sometimes that’s the biggest leap is just starting. Once you start, you have to give yourself grace when it comes to missing a day of working out or meditation, or maybe you just didn’t feel like waking up earlier that day.

Give yourself grace and forgive yourself. Don’t allow that feeling to stop you from continuing to move forward.

When I first sat down with Anna, she was at a pivotal moment in her life. However, this is precisely when we should focus on self-care to prevent falling into unhealthy routines. Self-care is essential to take care of ourselves not only so we can be our best selves, but also to ensure we are around for a long time to be with our loved ones.

Let's delve into some essential tips for maintaining a well-rounded and healthy lifestyle that promotes physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, particularly during the winter months.

Exercise Exercise plays a crucial role in maintaining not only physical health but also in boosting the immune system, which becomes particularly crucial during the winter months. With the heightened risk of encountering the flu, COVID-19, and other seasonal illnesses, it's essential to take proactive measures to strengthen your body's defenses. According to the Mayo Clinic, incorporating just 30 minutes of exercise into your daily routine can make a significant difference.

Exercise helps to strengthen the body's defenses against illnesses by improving overall cardiovascular health, increasing circulation, and promoting the efficient function of the respiratory system. It aids in maintaining a healthy weight, which can significantly reduce the risk of various chronic diseases.

Heart Health As African Americans, we are at an increased risk for heart disease.

Culturally, our traditional holiday meals (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s), while undeniably delicious, often contribute to this risk. The good news is we can make subtle yet impactful changes to our holiday menus that maintain their scrumptiousness while being healthier for our hearts. Here are a few suggestions to consider this year: 1. Opt for leaner protein sources like turkey or chicken instead of heavier meats like ham or deep-fried options.

2. Increase the presence of colorful vegetables and fruits as sides, such as roasted sweet potatoes, steamed greens, and fresh fruit salads, which can add vibrant flavors and vital nutrients.

3. Swap out sugary and high-fat desserts for lighter alternatives, like a fresh fruit platter, Greek yogurt parfaits, or baked fruit crisps with a touch of honey and cinnamon.

These minor modifications can significantly contribute to a hearthealthier holiday season while still delighting the taste buds.

Hydration Harvard Health recommends consuming 11.5 cups of water a day for women and 15.5 cups a day for men. Drinking an adequate amount of water is essential for digestive health, joint health, skin hydration, temperature regulation, urinary health, blood pressure, and electrolyte balance. Water makes up the largest part of our body, and multiple components within our body contain water.

It's no wonder that so many things can be off balance if we don't have adequate water intake.

Not consuming enough water can lead to symptoms such as dry mouth, dark yellow urine, dizziness, or even headaches. To ensure you're staying hydrated, it's a good practice to carry a reusable water bottle with you and sip on it throughout the day. This not only helps you keep track of your water intake but also makes it more convenient to meet your daily hydration goals.

Sleep Mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, people often underestimate the impact these aspects can have on their health, leading to issues such as stress, ulcers, hair loss, depression, and fluctuations in weight. It's essential to prioritize and nurture each of these areas in your life. One way to support your mental and emotional well-being is by ensuring you get 6-8 hours of sleep each night.

Additionally, maintaining a consistent bedtime is crucial to preserve your circadian rhythm.

The Army recognized the importance of leading by example and fostering resilience to accomplish tasks and missions effectively.

They identified three critical factors within the performance triad: sleep, nutrition, and exercise. Remarkably, technological advancements over the past 5-10 years, such as the iWatch, Fitbit, and similar devices, measure these same components, and some now incorporate stress tracking into their features as well.

Relaxation Prioritizing relaxation and stress reduction is key to enhancing your immunity and overall well-being. If you're a busy working mom, consider setting aside 10 minutes of personal time as soon as you get home to unwind before diving into the responsibilities of the evening. When it comes to communicating your needs, be gentle but keep it honest and direct. Sit down with your man and have a heart-to-heart.
