ON ANIMALS & MIDPANDEMIC ART

Corona initially overran us all. We created a cocoon like caterpillars and withdrew.

The loneliness made our thoughts circle and an inner restlessness overcame us.

In order to use the excess energy, many began to look for activities. Dogs, guitars and yoga mats moved into the houses. So the Derivative Team decided to meet twice a week to get creative.

Each one prepared a small workshop and taught the other members something new. Painting with oil colour, embroidery, pottery, photography and even drawing with mouth and feet.

We wanted to share the joy that came up with us and motivated friends from all over the world to participate in this project and to send us works on the generic term „animals“. The stunning results can be seen in this little magazine.

BIRD IS THE WORD Leonie This year I left the country for the first time. Not being able to travel was torture to me. I took this picture at the Natural History Museum in London.These pretty birds are extinct. Another time it made me realize that we should treat our planet as it deserves.

L‘ANIMAANIMAL‘E @vicbonetti Victoria Marchetti Bonetti The paper composition attempts to figure a human being which in turn, exposed to focal light, reveals it‘s soul (from italian ‚anima‘, soul) through it‘s projected shadow: animale.

Recently I’ve been interested in Brazilian constructivism sculpture specially with the work of artists such as Lygia Clark. From that I tried to explore gestures as folding and cutting generic paper. What triggered me was the experience of exposing these paper mockups into focused light and seeing how shadow and light plays a role into the idea of the object’s shape/morphology.

STRIPES Gianna This photo was taken earlier this year in Kenia. One of the most unique patterns in the animal world. Totally monochrome. The way I edited the picture circles become stripes.

THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME @navarrojobim Eduardo Jobim Navarro The first image is the „true“ one, the second is the work being used and the last is a closer view on the ugly woodwork details. It is made of an old mannequin head, an old wooden tabletop, cardboard and acrylic paint. I had some experience with papercraft (the horns) and acrylic painting in general (and aliens in specific), but it was my first attempt at wood burning (hence my tool being a electronic components welder, not the best for the job) and using the papercraft in something that was not a costume. All of the materials were gathered at a garage sale from an event company someone from my family used to work at that closed because of the pandemic.

ANIMAL + ADJECTIVE + VERB @beaperlata, @paola.b.f, @carolinagarcia Beatrice Perlato, Carolina Garcia & Paola Ferrari The creative process was to write around 24 animals + 24 adjectives + 24 verbs in a paper and cut them, so we could have them separately. Each of us had an A4 paper and one colorful pen.

We started the „round“ with each of us taking an animal in a random way (choosing from a bag, without knowing which animal it would be). then we had 20 seconds to represent this animal in the paper.

After the 20 seconds we had to give the paper to the person on the right. and receive a new drawing from the person on the left.

The next round was to take an adjective, and more 20 seconds to represent this in the paper. then change the paper again, giving to the person on the right. the last round was to take a verb and more 20 seconds to add another drawing.

We did that 24 times and chose our favorites (six).

WOODEN WINGS Elena I keep discovering something new, even at home. The grain on my closet looks like wings, so I put the golden dove on it.

SPOTTED Phillipp One day at the zoo, a snow leopard approached me. I took this brilliant photo through the bars.

Even if I always enter the zoo with mixed feelings, I am happy to be able to see these great creatures up close.

NEON CAT @gabrielfaustini Gabriel Faustini Rodrigues I tried to play a little bit with spray cans and some graffiti techniques. My idea was to use three tones of paint on a black background to create a Neon Light effect of a mad Cat. The materials used were: Black, dark and light blue and white spray can and the bottom part of a broken drawer.

IVORY @mchochiminh Joshua Probst I made those drawings in order to create a stencil for spray paint.

I tried to use easy and abstract shapes that would still make you recognize which animal it is.

DER MEISENMANN Charlotte, 7 EInes Tages flog der Meisenmann los und sah eine Wiese.

Ganz viele Tiere waren da. Rehe, Kaninchen, Bienen und Libellen.

Es war warm und er suchte nach Futter für seine Kinder, die im Nest warteten. Als er was gefunden hatte, folg er zurück und alle wurden satt.

I splashed some black ink in a beige paper and smudged the marks with a wet sponge, it reminded me of a squid. And I imagined that squid leaving its ink on the paper and running away.

ABOUT US The Derivative Studio is a GermanBrazilian unit composed of Beatriz Vecchia, Christian Klefke, Joshua Probst and Mayara Lafratta.

The studio is a space created for experimentation in different media formats and trades such as illustration, design, ceramics and tattoo.

The diversity of the work proposition gives us the freedom to follow interests, curiosities, and passions of all sorts.

The name Derivative Studio comes from the joke that brought us together: Danny Devito’s character Frank from the series, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, looking to destroy an art show.

More than that, the term “derivative” was chosen to highlight the notion that we all somehow recycle ideas and there is actually nothing wrong with that. Therefore, our intention is not to reinvent design but to find our own way within its framework.

The Derivazine is the first complete work by the Derivative Studio, bringing together not only its participants but engaging people to go out there and try something new.
