Miky said, “My favorite part is that I can be myself. What kind of job can you actually dance and exercise in the middle of the day? You know, just 9 o’clock in the morning, I can turn on the music, I can exercise, it’s cute, it’s just for the kids to dance, but I make myself fit for my exercise.”

match up with it… I didn’t realize that the teachers that I had still worked here; I thought that was kind of cool.”
Caregivers Miky Bynum and Sylvia O’Donnell have seen many adorable faces come and go at the Beale AFB Child Development Center since they began work on the same day in 1997. They are currently the longest employed among the employees who provide care to more than 280 children every work day. They have been teaching children so long in fact that a couple of the same children have shown up to contribute to the same mission.
Katie said her memories of her providers were vague and she doesn’t remember attending the CDC itself because she was so young. She had to ask her parents if they remembered people at the CDC to fill in the gaps with stories of her time there. Katie said it is fun to work with children that are the same age that she once was. “Since I have a similar experience, I think I can help them better through that.”
told her she attended the same CDC and it felt like a full circle moment. “I found out that Sylvia was still working here and my mom talks about her all the time… she would tell me stories about her.” Gabby’s mom filled in the details about her time at the CDC, like the time that Gabby’s father forgot to pick her up from the CDC one afternoon. Back then, Sylvia was her father’s neighbor at the time, and she knew where her mother worked. With permission, Sylvia brought Gabby to her mother that evening.
Gabby Peel was once a child that attended the Beale CDC. Now a toddler teacher, she said when she applied for a job earlier this year she forgot that she had attended as a child.
For Katie Gibson, a toddler teacher who also used to attend the CDC as a child, coming to work at the CDC in 2017 was a neat coincidence.
“My mom just kept telling me you need to apply on base, so I applied here,” said Gabby. Gabby mentioned that her mom
Katie said, “I needed a job after college, and my degree was in psychology so I thought that working with children would
Sylvia said her biggest reason for continuing to work there after 2 decades is that she loves children and has always worked with children. “In the age group I have, pre-toddlers, it is where you see them really develop, and I appreciate that every day. They’re walking, talking… from [nursing], to a bottle, to a sippy cup, to a real cup. You see it all in

that one-year range, you see all that growth and I appreciate that, and I really like being a part of that. It’s rewarding.”
When it comes to the role of caregiver and teacher to the toddlers they work with, Gabby and Katie have gotten the immediate sense of how important it is to create a positive environment for them. Gabby said, “Being a teacher, it’s definitely taught me patience and to create a good experience for the kids because a lot of them have parents who are [gone] and they don’t get to see their parents.” Sylvia said that working at the CDC is like having another family, especially among the age group teachers, such as the infant and pre-toddler rooms. Sylvia said she has thought about retirement after all these years, to which Miky says she cannot, “not yet.”

Your feedback is important to us. We would like to share a few comments we’ve received recently. BEALE LANES
“The staff here is just flat out amazing. Everybody is super friendly! But the AC not working is just ridiculous. Hoping to come back when its cooler, but we will not be back for the rest of the summer.”

CE has developed a project to replace the entire AC unit. We are awaiting funding before this project can proceed. We understand your frustration and agree that it becomes difficult to bowl on really hot summer days. We are all looking forward to new AC. Thank you for your patience as we wait for proper funding.
RESPONSE
We are so happy you enjoyed your trip to San Francisco Pier 39. Speaking of coming back, the trip is being offered again August 31. SIGN UP TODAY!
