editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, An interes)ng week for those who tuned in to watch celebrity chef Colin Fassnidge’s TV show, Kitchen Nightmare, that saw him engage with a local Batemans Bay restaurant and basically dissect it to reveal the underbelly and the failures of its opera)on. With some promo)ng the show with the ques)on “Can COLIN FASSNIDGE defrost Batemans Bay Frozen Seafood Restaurant?” it was bound to gain the a:en)on of Batemans Bay locals, and they tuned in in droves as was evident by the cha:er on social media the following day. In the end, following some serious truth-telling, it appears that there may be hope for the restaurant in ques)on, if only the indignant owner accepts what was said, addresses his failures, and pays more respect to his staff and patrons.

The general line of the Kitchen Nightmare program was that the local restaurant owner, by his own admission, thought that by appearing on Colin’s program, he might gain free publicity. Li:le did he realise that Colin would come in and reveal, not only to the staff, but to the chef and the clientele, that the seafood was in fact frozen rather than fresh and that it came from Vietnam and Brazil, whilst being suggested as fresh, and therefore local. The bo:om line was that by using imported frozen product it reduced costs and maximised profits.

The Kitchen Nightmare program went behind the scenes where we discovered that the chef wasn’t on a full )me salary, had li:le if any control of the menu and was in line to lose his job once an alternate chef could be found. The poten)al of termina)on for the chef, like many other under-employed workers across the region, clearly posed an imbalance in the working rela)onship. It was evident that there was a clear divide between management and staff, there was a power difference, and that things weren’t good, but when asked if everything was OK the owner said it was all fine and that everyone was happy, as did the staff, as they warily looked over their shoulders.

When the owner was confronted by Colin that things were not rosy at all and that the menu was bland, overpriced and in need of change the response was that it was all OK, no-one had complained, and therefore there was no need to make any changes. This presented a crossroads to Colin Fassnidge. It was clear that the owner was failing to take responsibility of his poor management and his failure to listen and to respect both his staff and his patrons. And it seemed that he was not recep)ve to being told otherwise. The intent to use the program to tell the world how good he was was in fact seriously backfiring.

Kitchen Nightmare had two op)ons. To walk away, or to turn it around. Colin chose to stay and support the staff and most importantly the chef. Hopefully the resolu)ons made by the owner as a result of the new menu and the salaried employment of the now empowered chef will remain in place. Time will tell.

This coming week will see a new General Manager arrive at Eurobodalla Council. It is hoped that he might be a ‘Colin Fassnidge’ and conduct his own inves)ga)ons of what many know of as a Kitchen Nightmare.

Much like the owner of the restaurant there are those in Council who will declare that everything is rosy and there is nothing to change. They will say that the staff are happy and content, well respected and resourced and that there is nothing that should be changed as there is nothing broken.

But much like a poor restaurant where feedback and complaint is ignored, the Council’s equivalent of the owner has seen complaint basically ignored, as too the festering toxicity that has developed over recent years.

While there have been some changes, along with a new term of Council who have their eyes and ears open, there remains the remnants of the resistance by a small, but influen)al few, to recognise that the )me has come to face the truth and either adapt or leave. Hopefully the new General Manager, along with a new term of councillors will bring a turn around that will see us have a council we can once again trust and be proud of, that engages and truly serves the community instead of delivering the blinkered unques)onable “my way or the highway” authoritarian approach it offers without apology’. There is an opportunity now to restore trust, pay overdue respect to hard working council employees to afraid to make comment, and to deliver a be:er outcome for the community. Most importantly, there is an opportunity to finally rid out selves of the toxicity that s)ll lingers, and to make the changes we need, and deserve.

Dog a#acks on the rise, owners beware Eurobodalla Council has reported an increase in serious dog a:acks, resul)ng in hospitalisa)ons and visits to the vet.

Ac)ng senior ranger Mitchell S)rling said the number of dog a:acks on farm animals and other dogs tend to spike in spring and summer.

“The seriousness of a:acks has increased, with some hospitalisa)ons of people and animals having to go to the vet,” he said.

“The number of dog a:acks this year has represented the same as previous years. As we move into the warmer months the numbers tend to rise. Last month, we had almost one a:ack per day and we are trending in that direc)on this month too.”

Following inves)ga)ons into dog a:ack incidents, Mr S)rling said the main causes were owners’ lack of understanding of their dog’s social skills and dogs being off lead in public.

“We are seeing a lot of dogs not interac)ng well with others and majority of a:acks occurring when they’re unrestrained,” Mr S)rling said. Mr S)rling urged owners to be more aware of their dog’s behaviour. To be a responsible dog owner and to understand your dog’s experience interac)ng with other dogs and people, and their behavioural ques is key to reducing the number of dog a:acks in our community,” Mr S)rling said.

“Please train your dog, know your dog, and exercise cau)on with your dog in unfamiliar places – if it’s their first visit to an area, keep them on a lead a few )mes first.”

Mr S)rling reminded owners to always keep dogs on a lead, unless signposted otherwise.

“The rangers are patrolling, and you can be issued with an on-the-spot fine,” he said.

“Remember that not all dogs are the same, and not all owners train and socialise their dogs. A dog does not have to physically bite for it to be considered an a:ack,” Mr S)rling said.

Owners can also receive an on-the-spot fine of $1320 if their dog displays aggression, harasses or chases animals or people.

“We prefer sharing informa)on with pet owners rather than imposing fines, please get in touch with the team if you have any ques)ons,” Mr S)rling said.

Rally for Recovery dona)ng $100,000 to Sydney Childrens Hospital Founda)on A great day for Rally for Recovery as a cheque was presented for $100,000 to the Sydney Children's Hospital Founda)on. A big Thank You is extended to everyone who donated and bought items from Rally for Recovery Tomakin.

And a bit of History of Rally...

You’ve never heard of Rally for Recovery Tomakin? Well, you are really missing out. Rally is the biggest Op Shop in the area, with absolutely everything (except clothing), that you never knew you needed. Rally is run on Wednesdays and Saturdays, rain permiQng from 8.30 un)l noon at 10 Ainslie Parade, Tomakin.

Opera)ng since 2002, over the years Rally has given over $2.3 M to the Sydney Children’s Hospital for Research into Childhood cancer, a cause that benefits children all over the world.

Rally has been going for so long due to the generosity of you, the donors, who give their unwanted items.

And you, the buyers who snap up the bargains that are on offer. Rally also does pickups and deliveries.

This is all due to the )reless volunteers who work for just coffee, tea and cake, what dedica)on! We must also thank our hardworking presidents over the years: Vera Entwistle, John Ward, John LighToot, Michael Drynan, Ken Sloan, Ray Dickinson and their partners.

But why Rally you might ask?

The original annual car rally was set up by Vera Entwistle in 2001 and assisted by Ian and Gayle Boardman, as a thank you to the volunteers. They drove Australia wide, raising funds and awareness. Eurobodalla was one of the most successful groups. Due to increasing costs and drought this was stopped. But more was needed, a permanent place to hold sales. Eventually, the Council was approached, who rented out the broken down Tomakin Volunteer Bush Fire shed in Ainslie Parade for 5 years at $1 pa.

Of course, the shed was desperately in need of repair. Rally asked for and received dona)ons from Council, Business and Individuals. With work from volunteers and locals, the place was made usable. The first garage sale there raised $5000 in one day, and from there we have not looked back. There have been a few hurdles over the years geQng the Rally Shed to its current state, but through all this, the benefits have flowed to the children, from the research we have helped to fund.

Builders warned to watch construc)on pollu)on Eurobodalla Council is calling on builders to do the right thing and avoid a fine by making sure their onsite sediment and erosion controls are in place.

Council’s environmental services manager Deb Lenson says an increasing number of builders aren’t complying with pollu)on measures required on construc)on sites.

“While some water overflow is expected in wet weather, there are too many cases where sediment and erosion fencing is non-existent or not maintained at all, and in some cases runoff from sites is ac)vely being diverted - illegally - into waterways,” she said.

Council is currently inves)ga)ng several building site incidents. Earlier this year, the Local Court upheld an $8,000 penalty issued by Council against a non-compliant building company and awarded Council legal costs.

To avoid pollu)ng the shire’s waterways and incurring subsequent fines, Ms Lenson said builders and their contractors should make sure their sites have adequate environmental control measures in place, and that these controls are maintained throughout construc)on.

“It is up to builders and property owners to manage their sites properly, and Council rangers regularly patrol construc)on sites to check pollu)on measures are effec)ve,” she said.

To help builders, Council has set up a weather alert no)fica)on system to prompt them to check their sites and pollu)on controls. Eurobodalla builders and trades can register for these email no)fica)ons by contac)ng Council’s environment team on 4474 1019 or enviro.services@esc.nsw.gov.au

Prolonged recent rain has also seen an increase in complaints from residents about water running across their yards from neighbouring proper)es. The Council does not become involved in civil ma:ers like these and encourages neighbours to nego)ate a solu)on.

NSW Labor roads visit to South East NSW In a construc)ve round-table discussion with members of the Eurobodalla community three prominent NSW Labor MPs heard first hand of the ideas, the concerns and the frustra)ons behind the transport op)ons and plans for the South East. The Member for Bega, Dr Michael Holland MP invited the Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs & Treaty and Shadow Minister for Jobs Investment and Tourism, David Harris MP, along with the Shadow Minister for Regional Transport & Roads, Jenny Aitchison MP to the electorate of Bega to discuss with stakeholders how they can improve South East NSW transport networks and roads and the outcomes being sought by individuals, tourism operators and other industries and communi)es. There was a good cross sec)on of community members who capably delivered their sugges)ons of where improvements might be made, discussing a myriad of chronic road, traffic, safety and tourism and planning issues in the Bega electorate, par)cularly in the Eurobodalla Shire. More than evident was the con)nued frustra)on that consulta)on with the community by Transport NSW appears to be li:le more than box-)cking and lipservice, especially in regards to the Moruya by-pass. Dr Michael Holland said of his mee)ng with the community: “In regard to our major transport infrastructure projects, consulta)on needs to involve everyone - from those who use the roads to those who service the roads. It’s been really valuable to have these conversa)ons with our different providers, residents and community groups. Regional communi)es deserve reliable and sustainable outcomes.”

Shadow Minister for Regional Transport & Roads, Jenny Aitchison MP said: “Our regions need integrated and strategic plans that take a holis)c approach to transport and infrastructure.”

“One thing we’ve heard from many stakeholders this week is the disappointment with NSW Government’s failure to properly consult with the community.”

“Transport is a social determinant of health, educa)on, opportunity, jobs and prosperity for the region.”

“When we have transport inequity we create issues for people” The topics discussed around the table were: EV charging and Tourism, Bus stops (undesignated) and safety, Local roads, Investment & educa)on opportuni)es, Strategic village plans, The future of public transport Gary Smith of Moruya Teensafe was vocal on the need to improve safety of the Princes and Kings Highway along with the State funded regional roads saying it was obvious that the 'pipe dream' of a dual carriageway from Nowra to the Victorian border won't happen for decades, if at all so in the immediate future it is vital to recognise this as a fact and install more overtaking lanes to accommodate the volume of traffic that is steadily building and the reality that the sub-op)mal sec)ons of roads we have are no longer fit for purpose.

He also noted the anomaly that there is a lack of public transport yet we have an excellent school bus service, poin)ng out that school buses are subsidised. As such there is the poten)al for an interim bus service during school holidays serviced by the buses that are paid for, but not used. Scathingly, and as many have done before him, he pointed out that the Regional Development Board have offered li:le evidence of any input to advocate for road improvements and have, in his opinion, sadly missed opportuni)es to lobby for near on a decade.

Following the mee)ng with community representa)ves the Members then met with Eurobodalla Council staff. The mee)ngs were part of a tour of the South East to look at transport issues and to listen to community members ahead of the next State elec)on in March 2023. Whilst there are think tanks such as the South East Australian Transport Strategy that look holis)cally at the network, and Transport NSW that develops their own strategies and priori)es, there is li:le opportunity for the community to come forward in a round table such as this weeks events.

Changed traffic condi)ons on the Kings Highway at Braidwood Motorists are advised of changed traffic condi)ons from next week on the Kings Highway for inves)ga)on work to be carried out east of Braidwood for about 2.8 kilometres between Clarevale Lane and Monki:ee Street.

One lane will be closed under stop/slow arrangement for pavement inves)ga)ons, in prepara)on for safety improvements for motorists.

Work will be carried out between 7am to 6pm from Tuesday 8 to Friday 11 November, weather permiQng. Traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.

Motorists are advised to drive to the condi)ons and follow the direc)ons of signs and traffic control. Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their pa)ence during this )me.

Observa)on Point upgrade full steam ahead With excitement building over the upgrade to Observa)on Point, Council reminds the public not to enter the construc)on site un)l works are complete.

Project engineer George Workman said the two-level viewing plaTorm is halfway to comple)on and will take about three more weeks to finish.

“The viewing plaTorm is fully accessible, with ramps and sea)ng to present outstanding views of nearby islands, Batemans Bay and new bridge,” Mr Workman said.

“I expect the deck will be bookable for wedding and events as it has been designed to hold up to 100 guests.

“There is coach and car parking, lots of sea)ng, a bespoke shade structure, yarning circle with sea)ng and several smaller viewing areas.”

Observa)on Point is also the northern gateway to the new 14.5km Batemans Bay Coastal Headlands Walking Trail.

“Once complete, Observa)on Point will become the jewel and the crown of the walking trail,” Mr Workman said.

“The upgrade not only focuses on magnificent views, but culture and history as well. We’ve included a focus on Indigenous cultural heritage and an a:en)on to na)ve landscaping details.

“There will be informa)on signage of Aboriginal and European cultural and historical informa)on.”

Two dead trees that are hollow bearing were also kept in the plans aZer being assessed safe to keep.

“We have been able to keep two large spo:ed gum trees,” Mr Workman said.

“They can provide opportuni)es for na)ve animal habitat and signage will be installed showing the environmental benefits.”

With construc)on work full steam ahead, Mr Workman warned the public to steer clear of the area.

“Our construc)on teams are s)ll seeing community members come to the gates every day to take a look,” Mr Workman said.

“Please be mindful the site is closed to the public with heavy plant machinery and construc)on teams busily working to get the job done by the end of the year.

“Please do not approach the site un)l works are complete.”

Without too many rain delays, Mr Workman said Observa)on Point was on track to be finished by late November.

Meanwhile, construc)on on the walking trail from Observa)on Point to McKenzies Beach will commence in coming weeks.

“There will be construc)on ac)vity around trail establishment, footpaths, stairs and addi)onal viewing plaTorms along the trail,” Mr Workman said.

The walking trail links headlands and beaches between Batehaven and McKenzies Beach via exis)ng natural bush tracks. It is scheduled to open mid-2023.

The P&C Associa)on has partnered with the Classic and Vintage Car Club of Eurobodalla to make the Formal a night to remember for students.

“This Year 12 group has had a par)cularly disrup)ve and stressful few years, coping with Bushfires and significant COVID-19 disrup)ons to their last two years of schooling,” said Mrs Alexandra Malcolm, P&C President.

“We want to make their formal something special to let them know how much we admire their resilience and hard work. We are very grateful for the owners and drivers of these precious cars for being so willing to add this extra element of excitement to the students’ special night “ she added.

The students will meet at Corrigan’s Beach Reserve at 4.30pm where they will meet the proud owners of the cars and have photographs taken. AZer this, with family and friends watching on, and a drone videographer capturing the occasion from above, they will set off along Beach Road for the Batemans Bay Aqua)c and Arts Pavilion, the venue for their Formal.

Four Winds welcomes the Australian String Quartet to the Windsong Pavilion on 25 November.

The evening will showcase one of the na)on’s renowned string quartets, performing a diverse and dynamic range of repertoire that conveys the potency of chamber music of today when in their hands. The musical journey will move through a triptych of miniatures from an exci)ng genera)on of Australian voices – equal parts animated, reflec)ve and atmospheric.

Feral horses and Kosciuszko on film at Narooma Kinema on 17th November A suspension of feral animal shoo)ng is the latest chapter in the struggle over feral horses in Kosciuszko Na)onal Park. The cull is intended to protect the park by reducing feral horse numbers to 3,000. At last count in 2020 there were 14,000 feral horses in the park with that number increasing 20% each year.

Whether the cull is making any headway will be seen in another count occurring before Christmas this year. The cull was secretly suspended by the NSW government in mid September in an apparent bid to placate Sydney shock jock Ray Hadley.

‘Although the suspension is the latest worry, feral horses in the park have long been a big concern,’ says film-maker Mandy King who explores the issues in her film Where the Water Starts. To make the film, King and her partner, Fabio Cavadini, teamed up with Indigenous and non-Indigenous community leaders who King says are really concerned about feral animals trampling and bogging up the fragile ecology of the headwaters of the Snowy, Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers which is also suffering climate change impacts.

‘Over genera)ons, the landscape has been degraded to the point where 34 species of na)ve plants and animals are now under threat. The high country has not evolved to handle hard hooved animals such as deer and especially feral horses,’ says King.

Richard Swain, a Wiradjuri descendant raised in the high country and Indigenous Ambassador on the Invasive Species Council, is a strong, passionate voice in the film.

‘It's at )pping point now, if you get the horses off and do a li:le bit of remedia)on, this will recover,’ hopes Swain.

‘Locals can learn more about this important na)onal discussion and what the future holds at the screening of Where the Water Starts at the Narooma Kinema on 17th November,’ says King.

Sca#ered People: A song can take you home Narooma Kinema on Thursday 10 November at 6.15pm. Hosted by the Refugee Ac)on Collec)ve Eurobodalla.

This Australian documentary is about the healing power of music. It follows Saha and Mas, two Iranian musicians who are seeking asylum in Australia. While in immigra)on deten)on they meet the Sca:ered People band, kindred spirits who play music and create songs with refugees and asylum seekers.

Interviews and music from Archie Roach, Missy Higgins, John Butler, Michael Fran), Ka)e Noonan, Dan Sultan, Robbie James and Baker Boy are included in the film. Sca8ered People explores how music can help unite, heal and restore compassion for some of the most vulnerable people on our planet.

The Sca:ered People band made weekly visits to a deten)on centre in Brisbane giving a crea)ve space for some and a life saving experience for others. Detainees offer their poems, hearTelt stories of courage and character, which the musicians turn into songs.

The Refugee Ac)on Collec)ve Eurobodalla will show the film as a fundraiser for the Australian charity Cisarua Learning which supports refugee led schools in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Stranded in Indonesia and denied work or educa)on rights, refugees started their own school in Cisarua, a district in West Java. Cisarua Refugee Learning Centre is en)rely run by volunteer refugees and teaches over 200 students aged between 5 and 65. Its approach has been followed by at least ten other refugee led schools.

Since 2014 Cisarua Refugee Learning Centre has created a strong community around the school, giving hope and purpose to refugees, many of whom were extremely isolated and depressed.

There are 14,000 refugees stranded in Indonesia and only a few are taken to safety each year by Australia and other countries.

Australia should restart the process of taking refugees from countries in our South East Asian region. In recent years, Australia has only taken 50 or 60 people from Indonesia. We can do be:er and work with our neighbours to find safety and permanent homes for people fleeing persecu)on.

The Triangle - November 2022 is OUT NOW Editorial by Linda Sang The Triangle welcomes the inaugural first contribu)on from Diggin Diggies. Dignams Creek has always been part of the Triangle area, it’s just stayed beneath The Triangle radar.

Diggies is in the unique posi)on of straddling both the Eurobodalla and BVSC shires to its fortune or misfortune. But what is clear, there has always been a very strong community there willing to share resources, )me, friendships and food between themselves and also be involved in the greater community.

Living in our corner of the world that we have arbitrarily named the Triangle, our connec)ons go well beyond our families, our street, local government areas, state and country. We live in a world that is connected in an instant, but what is stronger and more prac)cal are our neighbours, our local community.

Dignams Creek has always been there, but unless a torchlight shines on an area, many of us aren’t aware of that locality and what goes on there. Speaking of torches … I’d like to remind our readership to con)nue to submit ar)cles that shine a light on what’s going on where they live, how someone is feeling, examples of crea)ve endeavours, entrepreneurial ventures, poli)cal bugbears, histories and future planning.

The Triangle is the expression of the community. Let it be a true reflec)on by receiving and publishing more contributors with diverse voices.

Reading—A beer with Baz “Pick up the pace, Bazza. You’ve got to get the heart rate up. It’s not a stroll. Stop looking around. Eyes straight ahead and focus.”

Mick checked the pedometer, sighed and jogged on the spot as Bazza caught up.

“I don’t know why I drew up this fitness plan for you, Bazza. You were supposed to be jogging by now and on track to complete your first parkrun by Christmas.

Absolutely no hope….. given the size of your shadow.”

Bazza quickened his pace slightly but was soon preoccupied with the surrounds. Human interven)on dominated the environment with footpaths, roads, telegraph poles and signs that stated the obvious.

He clicked his tongue.

“You’re a tough personal trainer, Mick……. but I do appreciate you giving up the early mornings to get me in )p top condi)on.”

Mick paused to take Bazza through a few stretches.

“All good, Bazza. I can’t sleep in anyway. This young bird in a nest outside my bedroom window is making a racket every morning. I don’t know what’s going on. It has somehow tricked these poor bloody magpies into believing it is their offspring. It’s huge and they can’t feed it enough so it just makes this monotonous high pitched shriek that just gets louder as the exhausted magpies struggle to keep up the food. It is a reality cartoon outside my window……..now…….push down on the hamstring, Bazza. You are trying to convince it that jogging is a possibility.”

Bazza closed his eyes and followed the instruc)on. The only sounds were also human made; the grinding of gears and the hiss of brakes from trucks and the constant hum of cars closed out the odd bird song.

“That bird is the Eastern Koel, Mick and so called because of the noise it makes. It’s a brood parasite. It lays a single egg in the host’s nest and once hatched, the chick forces the other eggs and hatchlings out of the nest and then carries on like a screaming only child. In your case, the poor magpies think it’s their offspring but struggle to feed it as it soon grows to about twice their size……… how many more stretches, Mick?”

“Leave the coun)ng to me, Bazza…….. so where do these Koels come from?”

“South East Asia, Mick. They travel thousands of kilometres to Australia each spring to mate and rankle our ears.”

“Now….let me get this straight, Bazza. They fly all the way here to breed and lay an egg in this magpie’s nest. The offspring kicks the other eggs or chicks out and exhausts the nest owners with impossible demands.”

Bazza sucked in a deep breath and squinted beyond the manicured lawns and symmetrically planted trees and wondered whether the distant hills had also been ‘fixed up’ by humans.* “All pre:y rude eh, Mick?”

Are the NSW Liberals seNng themselves up for a flogging over radiotherapy in the SE? Dear Beagle Editor, On Monday 31 October ABC SE Radio Breakfast (8:30 News) reported that yet again our Local Health District bureaucrats have given a flat ‘NO’ to including the overwhelmingly needed radiotherapy services into the precinct of the New Eurobodalla L4 Regional Hospital (at planning phase now, with construc)on work due to start shortly before the elec)ons in March 23).

The money to build is there, courtesy first of the former (Liberal) Federal Minister for Health ($4M) in 2020 and now of a generous $8M recently confirmed from Federal Member for Gilmore, Fiona Phillips MP. This is alongside the obvious opportunity to re-allocate the substan)al current annual costs of out-of-area pa)ents referrals, transport, and accommoda)on to cover the day-to-day expenses incurred for providing this service locally: A ‘no-brainer’ as many have observed.

With a Regional Pe))on now totalling near 5,500 speaking LOUD AND CLEAR for both Bega Valley and Eurobodalla communi)es, and a response from the NSW Health Minister due in the next 2 weeks, Southern NSW Local Health District’s Chief Execu)ve Margaret Benne: has most likely been asked to cushion the shock of the forthcoming nega)ve and in-denial response from the Minister to the Pe))on.

This is a Minister who said on the same ABC SE Radio on September 1: “It is my absolute priority to ensure that, no ma8er where you live in our State, you have access to the health services that you need and deserve”.

Bronwyn Taylor, NSW Minister for Regional Health Accordingly, the Head Pe))oners serve public no)ce through Southern NSW Local Health District to the Minister: By refusing the Community’s wishes, do not delude yourself that you will be achieving the beginning of the end. Rather, consider it as merely the end of the beginning.

Le#er to the editor Dear Beagle Editor, Councillors & ESC Council I am a current resident and home owner in Surfside and have lived in Bateman’s Bay for over 46yrs.

I am very concerned with the gravity of the situa)on bought to my a:en)on regarding councils CMP,CVA, IPCC and Hazard Codes plans.

These were bought to my a:en)on at a recent mee)ng of the Surfside Engineers Group comprising of Viv Sethi, Graeme Shoobridge. David Webster, Rosemary Deadman and concerned Surfside residents on Saturday 29th October.

Firstly I would like to say that residents received no)ce by mail on Friday 28th October with only eight business days to submit our objec)ons and concerns to these proposals.

Many homeowners from Surfside do not reside here permanently so would not have received the le:er box drop.

Eight business days is not an adequate amount of )me to respond in an informed manner therefore an extension )me is required with respect to Surfside residents.

As published 25/2/2019 in the Bay Post/Moruya Examiner and Beagle Weekly Andrew Constance and Gabrielle Upton met with Surfside residents and promised $250,000 to “find how to protect Surfside from inunda)on” and Ms Upton stated that $5million in funding was reserved to help find a solu)on in consulta)on with Residents, Roads.

And Mari)me Services and Council. She stated that RMS, Crown Lands, GHD, OEH. And Dept. Planning and Environment had been brought together in a coordinated effort to resolve the Coastal Management issues impac)ng homes and futures.

Where is the $250,000? What happened to the $5million that was reserved to help find a solu)on?

Property values will plummet , rates will increase and we won’t be able to sell our homes as the insurances will be too high(if the insurance companies will insure us at all!)

The banks will not lend mortgages without home insurance. Some parts of Lake Conjola (Shoalhaven Council) are already seeing these trends.$20,000 p/a is NOT doable!

Also if the Coastal inunda)on maps(Rhelm) 1yr,20yr,100yr ARI Surfside are “accurate” then why is Council acquiescing to NSW State Governments approval to the huge resort development at the end of Myamba Pde/ Cullendulla?

Also there are 4x Commercial Blocks that are in Councils PorTolio(owned by Council) 2 being on corner of The Vista and Wallaringa St and 2 on The Vista and Myamba Pde that have recently been put up for Auc)on and For Sale.

Also 1x residen)al block on the corner of Timbara Crescent and Bayview St? How can Council be so bold as to ”Sell Off” these proper)es to unsuspec)ng purchasers for future approval and promise of development if the CMP data is accurate? (Perhaps “A Scramble for the Coffers?”)

There have been MANY engineering consultants engaged by Council and paid for( with rate payers monies) GHD, Whitehead and Associates and of course Rhelm just to name a few.

One would wonder , are Council’s pursuance of these numerous reports suited to Councils ques)onable aims and objec)ves?

100 Years Ago—November 4th 1922 MRS. E. M. Wallace has disposed of her general store business, dwelling and land at Gundary to Mr. J. Spinks.

SOME excitement was caused in town early on Monday morning when a kangaroo chase took place. Through the gate being leZ open, the “Examiner’s” mascot escaped from the paddock, in which he is kept, out to the street.

Mr. W. Crapp on his race mare Submarine and leading Kerlin went in pursuit of the marsupial which was making towards Gundary for the bush. But Mr. Crapp could not gain much ground as his horses were almost unmanageable through being terrified. Fortunately, the ‘roo turned into Miss Murphy’s yard, where half a dozen dogs bailed him up, but strange to say not one was game to tackle him, the ‘roo holding them all at bay. … [It] made another dash for liberty down Campbell Street. Careering up Vulcan Street and down lower Queen Street he gained the lanes and escaped into a paddock and hid amongst some greenstuff, where his owner, Mr. A. W. Constable, eventually found him. … The runaway was returned to his home in an unharmed state.

MESSRS. P. Minahan and N. Wadell are s)ll working on their reefing proposi)on at the head of Ferguson’s Gully near Deau River, and the prospects are said to be very encouraging.

On hearing the news our ratepayers immediately had visions of wood-blocked roads and granite footpaths within our boundary, but alas they are doomed to disappointment, as instead of the light brigade arriving, Engineer Dawson received only SIX men, whom he at once set to work on the Moruya-Bodalla road.

Catalina Veterans Golf Ten golfers from Catalina Veterans took part in the Mid South Coast Veterans Championships recently at Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club, with two being par)cularly successful.

In a field of 108 players, Tom Purcell, off a handicap of 5, was the Division One winner with a score of 77.

Dalmeny Boardriders Come and Try day Nov 6th Dalmeny Boardriders club is holding a ‘Come and try day’ at their next compe))on on Sunday November 6th.

There will be two addi)onal )me slots; one for first )me surfers (with pre-surf briefing and support in the water), and an expression session for surfers who want to try compe)ng for the first )me.

Broulee Runners Wed 2nd November 2022 Perfect condi)ons for running of the Broulee stakes over 2, 3 & 4 kilometres. The event is extremely popular on the running calendar and a:racted a strong field of par)cipants. The handicapper was tough on those running with dogs and prams.

Nevertheless, the outstanding compe)tor was Katharina Birks pushing a pram with twins Tommy and Theo on board to record a personal best )me. Others to impress the judges with PBs were Andrew Greenway, Bernie Lambert, and John LighToot in the 3 kilometres.

Over the longer course of 4 kilometres the stewards were considering a drug test on the improved form of Ken Hogg and John Hicks. We congratulate Caitlin Seidel on earning her 30 run shirt. Some of the Broulee Runners will be taking on events in Canberra, Sydney, and Huskisson next weekend. These events cover distances from 10, 21 and 50 kilometres. Tackle World Moruya Fishing Report October 28th 2022 Moruya River.

Thankfully we didn’t get the predicted rains last weekend, this has allowed the river another week to clear up. The incoming )de is s)ll your best op)on at fishing cleaner, warmer waters. The warm northerly currents that are pushing down the coast, are helping to flush the rivers of the cold dirty waters. With the offshore temperatures star)ng to hit 20 degrees, the rivers are in turn also warming up.

We can expect the bream, flathead and hopefully the whi)ng ac)vity to start to increase.

There have been good reports as of yesterday, of good numbers of trevally and flathead being caught off of the town boat ramp next to the local pool. Baits of mullet fillet and prawns have been working nicely to date. We can expect to also find the flathead, bream and Trevally under the town bridge working the drop offs and the shallows in the middle of the river.

Quarry wharf down to the river mouth is also seeing an increase in fish ac)vity, with reports of flathead, tailor, bream and salmon all coming to light over the past few days.

The last half of the incoming )de, seems to offering the best chance of finding a fish or two.

Tuross River.

The lower sec)ons of the Tuross river are cleaning up quickly now that the flood flows further upstream have abated. There have been good catches in the cleaner warmer waters of flathead, bream, mulloway and tailor all in the lower half of the system. This will con)nue to improve throughout the system as we see the influx of warm clean waters back into the system.

Baits of all types, as well as lures have all been working on the local fish popula)ons. Get out and enjoy what is shaping up to be a reasonable weekend, weather wise.

Early morning sessions will be the best )mes as the winds are expected to increase throughout the day.

Rock and Beach.

Salmon have been readily available off most beaches this week, with both baits and lures accoun)ng for plenty of fish. No par)cular beaches any be:er than another, just get out and explore the op)ons. As the warm currents increase the water temperatures, the bream and whi)ng will start to become a more consistent catch off the local beaches. I prefer to search the areas of mixed ground, in the beach/headland corners for a few of these fish. Beach worms and nippers both being the best baits for a feed of whi)ng or bream.

Moruya breakwall is always worth a look, with plenty of op)on on the beach side.

Offshore.

The tuna run con)nues for the game crews as the water temps con)nue to rise. There have also been reasonable catches of snapper and flathead in and around the local reefs. Start looking in 30-40m of water for a chance at finding a tasty feed.

As the water temps increase, the baiTish will be star)ng to increase over the reefs, both natural and man made. This in turn should also a:ract the predators.

Prepara)ons for the Christmas season is con)nuing in store with new stock arriving by the pallet load of a regular basis. Stay tuned for an exci)ng announcement over the next few weeks, as more new stock hits the shelves.

The new Atomic Real Baitz have been embraced by a lot of customers chasing big flathead, mulloway over the last week. If you haven’t seen them come in store and check them out for yourself. The new Pro Lure Clone Prawns have also been a popular addi)on to the soZ plas)cs wall, with both the 62 & 92mm sizes finding a place in some of your tackle boxes already.

What’s In A Name?

Business names are interesting things, and it has a bit of a flow on effect when it comes to web site addresses, emails and the like.

For example, apparently the longest web address in the world is llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.co.uk.

Imagine spelling that out over the phone. I suspect you would have to do it several times before the other person wrote it down correctly.

Several years ago, when we moved from the “bright gold jacket” real estate franchise to our current “South Coast Property Specialists”, it was an interesting exercise to (a) decide on the name and then (b) find a web address that made sense, wasn’t too long and was even available.

We decided that www.southcoastpropertyspecialists.com.au was a little bit of a mouthful particularly when you start giving out your email address (eg carlene@southcoastpropertyspecialists.com.au). But the obvious address of www.scps.com.au was already taken by someone in the painting profession. So, in the end we settled on www.southcoastps.com.au

So, why am I telling you all this? Before I elaborate, one more bit of history. Many of you will remember the “.com era”. It was a period in the late 1990’s when there was a massive rush of businesses to get themselves online, have an internet presence, start selling items online and basically just get online. Many companies didn’t even really know what it meant at the time, but everyone was doing it. When you did get online, most businesses in Australia got a web address that ended in “.com.au”. For the past few years, the people that look after internet naming standards thought that the “.com” part of the address was no longer really required and so earlier this year, businesses such as ours had the opportunity to register for the equivalent web address that dropped the “.com” part. In our instance that would be www.southcoastps.au.

However, if companies didn’t take up the new (shorter) address option then it became available on the general market. As the current owner of www.scps.com.au didn’t take up the new option, we have recently acquired ownership of www.scps.au. Now, most people also realise that you don’t need to put in the ”www” any more, so if you go to your browser and just type in scps.au you will be forwarded to our existing website. Of course, we have also kept our southcoastps.com.au address and that now forwards to scps.au.

Soon (but not yet), we will be changing over our emails to reflect the new shortened domain name and once that happens you will be able to email me at carlene@spcs.au and of course my current email will be forwarded to the new one. How simple will that be?

So, What’s In A Name? In this instance, it’s ease, simplicity and speed. We hope the new changes will make it even easier for our clients and business contacts to contact us.
