The first thing we have discovered, by way of diligent invesCgaCon and research, is that the Mackay Park Project has become even smellier than first imagined.

Note that, from the outset, any financial or risk related informaCon provided by Council to any agency is blocked from public scruCny. - Not once has the $70m Mackay Park project business case come under scruCny - NSW Sport were provided a case that had a disclaimer saying it wasn't to be used for a grant applicaCon. - The $8m cultural fund allocaCon in Round 2 was awarded six months before the Round was opened and no business case was considered by the panel, as required.

- The $26 million Constance/Berejiklian Regional Growth grant was awarded without a business case.

- The Federal $25 million Regional Growth Grant panel did not scruCnise a FULL business case, as required, and the money was granted 10 days before the announcement of a Federal ElecCon. It now turns out that the Office of Local Government (OLG) have not endorsed the project as well, saying (right) : Why might the Office of Local Government make such a statement in a leBer to Council? It turns out that they hold concerns for the future affordability of the new facility as you can read to the (leO). Note though that the OLG do say the “OLG’s concluded that Council’s assessment meets the relevant criteria of the Guidelines”. What guidelines? The Capital Expenditure Guidelines.

This leBer from the OLG was received by Council on July 13th 2020. The Councillors then voted to move ahead with the project on July 28th, 2020. The report they were given by the staff only said:

Note that it didn’t menCon any of the concerns that OLG had communicated nor did it menCon that the OLG Clearly advised that their leBer should not be “construed” as an endorsement.

Now comes the Rock and Hard Place. A GIPA request has been lodged to determine if the Councillors were given a copy of the OLG leBer before they voted. If they were given the leBer then six of them voted to move forward with a project knowing it had not Ccked any measurable financial boxes raising concerns that the Councillors (not McGinlay, Mayne or Constable) voted to Beagle Editor…….. One of the main inclusions required by the Guidelines is a “comprehensive Business/Management Project Plan,” that Vol 16 September 15th 2017 outlines 28 December the27th costs2018 7th, and2017 revenues, includes the business structure and objecCves, the reasons the proposal will be Vol 48 111April July 12th 2019 successful and financial projecCons - both direct and indirect costs, capital and ongoing recurrent costs as well as expected costs once the project becomes operaConal.

Yet ESC had the audacity to include the following cover le/er (obtained through GIPA) with its Review documents, to the OLG:

In the end the Council acquiesced and provided some economic modelling undertaken early in the project with a staff member claiming that “I sCll believe that modelling is valid although the costs of the centre has changed.” This modelling also remains secret and has never been publicly scruCnised.

The GIPA request for confirmaCon as to when the Councillors were made aware of the OLG concerns is sCll in process. One way or the other the revelaCons will be damning. Did Council fail to advise the Councillors? Did staff knowingly deceive the councillors and public by failing to communicate in full the OLG opinion around the review by selecCng a single line that might be construed as endorsement?

Or did six of the nine Councillors knowingly endorse the expenditure of $19 million from ratepayers funds to a project that has been a shambles from the very start, embroiled in secrecy, decepCons, rorts, failed community engagement processes and pracCces, alienaCon and controversy.

All of the revelaCons above were made by a concerned member of the public. The GIPA request was at her insCgaCon. The big quesCon is “Why didn’t our Councillors ask these quesCons and seek this informaCon?” Much more to come ….. UnCl next, Lei

Council to vote on final loca3on of the two Weyman statues in Moruya Vol 16 September 2017 Council’s Public 15th Art Advisory CommiBee (PAAC) are advising the Councillors 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 at next week's Council meeCng on their recommendaCons for:

- the installaCon of the Ack Weyman memorial sculpture - the relocaCon of the Mick Weyman bronze sculpture, and - the acceptance of the works as giOs upon compleCon. The Memorial Sculpture CommiBee, a subcommiBee of the Moruya Rugby League Football Club, has commissioned a bronze statue of Ack Weyman as a companion piece to the exisCng bronze of local footballer Mick Weyman, currently situated in Russ MarCn Park, Moruya.

Showground. The Moruya Chamber of Commerce preferred a more prominent site and Russ MarCn Park was chosen as an interim locaCon, with a view that the sculpture be relocated to the showground at a later date. With the death of Ack Weyman in 2019 and the new commission underway, the Memorial Sculpture CommiBee believe it to be an ideal Cme to relocate the original piece.

The newly commissioned piece is by the same local arCst, Terry Fuller, who created the exisCng Mick Weyman bronze.

The commiBee has been fundraising all year and have advised that they would like to see both bronzes located at the Moruya showground, at the entrance to the Ack Weyman oval, and would like to include some landscaping to enhance the area. The proposal includes an upgrade of the exisCng sign with stone pillars to be placed at the project site acCng as a landscape feature.

The recommendaCon to Council next week will seek to endorse the installaCon of the commissioned sculpture of Ack Weyman at the Moruya Showground, endorse the relocaCon of the Mick Weyman sculpture to the same site; and accept the works as part of Council’s permanent collecCon. beagle weekly : Vol 180 November 6th 2020

Detour found for Araluen Road residents 16 September 15thfound 2017 around the landslip AVoldetour has been 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 on Araluen Road.

Eurobodalla Council will start work early next week to clear and connect a number of forest trails around Knowles Creek, providing a temporary access road to Moruya for people living west of the slip.

“We need to remove a number of fire-damaged trees, clear and grade some secCons, while others will need a bulldozer to get them up to scratch.

“I want to thank our colleagues at Forestry CorporaCon NSW for their willingness to help us find a soluCon. Meanwhile, the landslip site was inspected by a geotechnical engineer on Wednesday, who confirmed the potenCal for further slips in the area.

“SubstanCal addiConal material had fallen since Monday and the slip was sCll mobile, moving and trickling while we stood there,” Mr Sharpe said.

“Right now, the only possible acCon is no acCon in terms of aBempCng to clear the road. It won’t be a quick fix.

“We’ve secured the area with water-filled barriers and the area is a no-go zone, with signage in place.”

Work will start on the temporary detour for residents early next week.

Dry stone walling workshop at Bergalia in November Dry stone walling workshop planned for Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 Bergalia 28 -29 November Twelve keen locals and visitors from all backgrounds came together at Bergalia last Spring for a weekend workshop on the tradiConal craO of dry stone walling.

Using techniques first applied in Europe thousands of years ago, the group built twelve metres of wall without using mortar. ParCcipants received instrucCons and had a Q&A session on technical terms used in the ancient craO, such as “Ha - Ha walls”, Copes”, “Cheekends”, “sCles”, “cripple holes” and “lunkies”.

"Interest in dry stone walling is becoming more widespread for people who aspire to landscaping their home gardens”, said Stephen Beashel, who hosted the workshop on their farm in Bergalia.

“Using tradiConal stonework with the stone from our quarry, this retaining wall looks great, it’s a natural way to use a natural product”.

Generosity seems to have no boundaries.

ladies from Sydney, Mary and her friend Barbara. They had traveled specifically to Tuross Head to make a donaCon of tools used by Mary’s late husband.

Mary was keen to make the donaCon in one way or another to those who were involved in the fires earlier this year or those who were providing support to those impacted by the fires.

Through Bruce Kennedy, a fishing club member, they learned about the Tuross Men’s Shed and the donaCon the Shed had provided to a number of local Fire Captains and crew who went through a really tough fire period and are sCll recovering.

The commiBee and members of the Tuross Men’s Shed would like to thank Mary for her generosity and to Barbara who jointly took the Cme to travel such a distance to make the donaCon which will be well used by those in need.

Tuross Head Men’s Shed The Tuross Head Men’s Shed, formed in 2012, is located in Monash Avenue, Tuross Head, and is close to the Tuross Head Community Club. It has a membership of around 60 shedders who undertake a variety of Community projects in associa5on with other community charity groups; such as, SAGE - Sustainable Agriculture and Gardening Eurobodalla; St Johns Ambulance, Moruya Hospital and supports the Eurobodalla Agricultural Show held at the Moruya Showgrounds.

Bushfire Royal Commission does not go far enough in addressing insurers and bushfire mi3ga3on Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

The Financial Rights Legal Centre is concerned that recommendaCons in the final report by the Royal Commission into NaConal Natural Disaster Arrangements do not go far enough to address miCgaCon and the rising costs of insurance.

Financial Rights Chief ExecuCve Officer Karen Cox said many of the recommendaCons in the Bushfires Royal Commission final report were important and encouraging.

“The Royal Commission has recognised the great challenges consumers face when it comes to the rising costs of insurance in Australia,” Ms Cox said.

“However, Ms Cox said that if Australia wants to assist our regional communiCes to thrive, we must address insurance affordability in bushfire prone areas.

The Royal Commission recommends that the insurance industry should produce and communicate to consumers clear guidance on individual-level natural hazard risk miCgaCon acCons that insurers will recognise in seXng insurance premiums.

“The lack of transparency in insurance premiums and the ability to challenge an insurer’s assessment of risk is a big concern for many consumers parCcularly people struggling in regional and rural areas,” Ms Cox said. ”Insurers must step up to the plate. Where miCgaCon work is done, insurers should commit to reducing their premiums."

Ms Cox said unfortunately the Royal Commission also did not specifically address the need for the Australian Government to increase funding for miCgaCon projects as was recommended by the NSW Bushfire Inquiry.

“Financial Rights has advised many affected consumers,” Ms Cox said. “Those most likely to be suffering from affordability pressures are least likely to be able to afford to undertake the kinds of miCgaCon work that could decrease their insurance costs.

“We strongly believe governments must move quickly to introduce subsidies for homeowners to make their homes safer and more resilient, before the next bushfires begin,” Ms Cox said.

NSW Bushfire Community Recovery And Resilience Funding Applica3ons Close Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Soon 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Local councils, community groups and not-for-profit organisaCons in bushfire impacted areas have unCl 16 November 2020 to apply for their share of $25 million to promote community well-being, social recovery and future disaster resilience.

Support for the vast bushfire recovery was extended in September with Stream 2 of the Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund (BCRRF) providing $25million for community recovery and preparedness iniCaCves.

Resilience NSW Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said funding of $20,000 to $300,000 is now available for eligible projects.

“Community groups, councils, joint organisaCons, NGOs and not-for-profits, I urge you to submit your applicaCons at www.emergency.nsw.gov.au before midday 16 November,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said.

“You know best what your communiCes need to help them achieve recovery and strengthen resilience.

These grants aim to help provide the necessary support to empower communiCes across NSW to drive local, community-led recovery and preparedness iniCaCves in their own backyards.

“Each bushfire impacted community is at a different point on their journey to recovery and has a different set of needs, so I’m looking forward to a diversity of projects coming to fruiCon.” ApplicaCons for Stream 1 BCRRF funding closed on 27 October and will be distributed to eligible councils, providing $100,000 or $250,000 grants for to support locally-led social recovery acCviCes. This brings the total BCRRF to over $35 million jointly funded by the Commonwealth and NSW Governments under Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements and is in addiCon to measures supported through the NaConal Bushfire Recovery Fund. The BCRRF is administered by Resilience NSW. The NSW Government’s $250 million Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund is also open for applicaCons.

The program supports infrastructure, social, business and environmental iniCaCves that retain and create new jobs, build resilience and increase preparedness for future bushfire seasons. Grants between $200,000 and $20 million are available across 47 regional NSW Local Government Areas.

Applica3ons close at 2pm on Friday 11 December.

Finishing Work To Begin On Batemans Bay Bridge The Batemans Bay Bridge replacement is moving forward, with finishing work starCng soon at the northern approach to the new bridge.

AVol Transport for 2018 NSW spokesperson said this new stage of work, which is expected to be completed by mid28 December 7th, 2017 48 111April July 27th 12th 2019 2021, represented an important milestone for the construcCon of the bridge.

“Once completed, the new bridge will provide safer journeys and improved connecCons for local communiCes,” the spokesperson said.

“The project is supporCng an average monthly workforce of around 150 workers – about half of who are local to the area.”

The spokesperson said the project had also finished producing the concrete bridge segments required for the new bridge, with more than 124 already installed.

Finishing work includes the installaCon of traffic barriers and railings as well as concreCng of the bridge approaches and expansion joints.

Work is being carried out during extended work hours on weekdays between 6am and 10pm and conCnue to mid-2021, weather permiXng. To take advantage of more favourable weather and Cdal condiCons in the evenings and early mornings, and to minimise dayCme disrupCon to Clyde Street West road users, work hours for bridge segment erecCon will be extended to 24 hours per day on weekdays and Saturday mornings unCl mid-December 2020, weather permiXng. Current extended work hours on the project are between 7am and 6pm every day, including public holidays.

Transport for NSW is commiBed to minimising disrupCons during this work and will plan work within extended standard work hours where possible.

For the safety of workers and river users, the land-based concrete pouring acCviCes will take place within the project boundary while river-based pours and other marine construcCon will occur within the marine exclusion zone that is bordered by safety buoys and signs at all Cmes.

The project remains on-track for compleCon by 2023.

What news on the new hospital site?

Local Newscorp journalist Alasdair McDonald offers readers of the Daily Telegraph an on the locaCon Vol update 16 September 15th 2017 of the new Eurobodalla hospital with his arCcle leadin: 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

Alas, for most residents on the South Coast, the arCcle sits behind a pay-wall and has not be printed for those who might buy the Telegraph.

What we do know of the site and the progress of the new Eurobodalla Regional Hospital is that an extra $50 million was pledged by the NSW Government bringing the total commitment for the project to $200 million.

We also know that the NSW Minister for Health and Medical Research Brad Hazzard has advised that there has been extensive community consultaCon resulCng in a Clinical Services Plan for the new hospital.

The Minister said in June 2020 “A site is being selected for the new hospital in consultaCon with stakeholders and will consider a range of factors, including accessibility, proximity to local infrastructure and environmental impacts.”

The community has been able to glean, formally and informally, that iniCal invesCgaCons show that areas north of Moruya or southeast of Moruya are the most likely areas for the new hospital to be built.

The last we heard was that these two areas are being explored, with consideraCon to key criteria such as road access, ensuring linkage to the future Moruya bypass, avoiding flood and bushfire zones, and ensuring close proximity to Moruya Airport.

So what news might the Daily Telegraph add around the locaCon as there has been no formal statement that a site has been selected, meaning that speculaCon remains.

What we do know is that, as part of the planning process, Health Infrastructure NSW is working closely with Southern NSW Local Health District and other government agencies, including Transport for NSW and the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.

But maybe the Daily Telegraph does know something more as it has already run the following: July 2020 - REVEALED: POTENTIAL LOCATIONS FOR FUTURE REGIONAL HOSPITAL Two potenCal sites for a new Eurobodalla Regional Hospital have been flagged by the State Government. NSW Health Infrastructure is now seeking further community feedback aOer it released the two potenCal zones for a new hospital.

The Eurobodalla Health Service Site SelecCon Working group met today (Friday November 6th, 2020) ahead of the next milestone when discussions begin with the appointed Project Manager in a few weeks Cme. With confidenCality clauses all signed we will now know nothing unCl told.

Of interest however is that, if the site selected is the southern site near the Moruya TAFE then the announcement of that site might also go hand in hand with the announcement of the intended route of the Moruya Bypass. beagle weekly : Vol 180 November 6th 2020

Council is con3nuing to inves3gate poor water result at Surf Beach The annual Beachwatch results have been released giving Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Eurobodalla Council a 91% score. Compiled by the NSW Office of Vol 48 2018 111April July 27th 12th 2019 Environment and Heritage the recently-released 2019-20 recent report showed water quality at nine of the 10 monitored beaches in Eurobodalla were rated ‘good’ or ‘very good’ with Surf Beach once again tesCng Poor. Council have advised they are conCnuing to invesCgate why Surf Beach in the Batemans Bay region returned a poor result.

Council’s environmental services manager Deb Lenson said of the result “We will be undertaking addiConal tesCng throughout the summer at Denhams Beach, Wimbie Beach and the Surf Beach Creek to try and ascertain the source of contaminaCon at Surf Beach,” Ms Lenson reminded residents to avoid swimming in local beaches, lakes and rivers for at least a few days aOer heavy rain and wait unCl the water looked clean and clear.

“Water quality in these areas is always reduced due to sediment runoff entering our waterways,” she said.

“We’ll also conCnue to see debris, soil and nutrient loads coming downstream from our bushfire-affected areas for some Cme to come, as evidenced by the recent heavy rainfall in the upper catchments.”

The Beachwatch monitored beaches are Bengello Beach, Brou Beach, Broulee North, Caseys Beach, Cookies Beach, Malua Bay, Narooma Main Beach, Narooma Shark Net, Shelley Beach, Surf Beach and Tuross Main Beach.

community Health professionals’ vote of no confidence in Minister Angus Taylor More than 3400 health professionals have wriBen to Prime Minister ScoB Morrison to express their professional concern with Angus Taylor’s failure to fulfil his responsibiliCes as the Minister for Emissions ReducCon. Vol 16 September 15th 2017

“We are health professionals and organisaCons bearing witness to the harm Mr Taylor’s failure to reduce 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 111 July 12th 2018 2019 emissions is causing to the health of Australians,” the leBer reads.

“We are also united by our concern about the climate crisis and the impact it is having on the safety and wellbeing of Australians and our neighbours. Public health is inextricably linked to climate health. Climate damage is here now — and it is killing people.”

The leBer says Minister Taylor is failing in his ministerial duCes by: allocaCng public money to gas and other polluCng fossil fuel projects while overseeing a 50% decline in large-scale renewables investment from a record high in 2018-19; failing to reduce Australia’s emissions in line with our internaConal obligaCons; and, not commiXng Australia to a 2050 net zero emissions target.

Fiona Armstrong, ExecuCve Director of the Australian Climate and Health Alliance, said: “Climate change is a health emergency. It means more bushfires, more dangerous heatwaves, the spread of tropical diseases, and an increase in heat-related illnesses and deaths. We urge our poliCcal leaders to commit to urgent climate acCon by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with what the science demands.”

Kelly O’Shanassy, the Chief ExecuCve Officer of the Australian ConservaCon FoundaCon, which co-ordinated the leBer, said: “As Australia moves into another summer this is a crucial Cme for our government to show it is serious about climate change. At the moment, Australia is a global leader in per capita climate polluCon. We urge Prime Minister Morrison to immediately replace Angus Taylor with a minister who is commiBed to the job of rapidly cuXng emissions.”

Eurobodalla doctor, Michelle Hamrosi, who helped promote the leBer campaign said: “We are black summer bushfire survivors. We choked through the smoke all late spring and summer and evacuated our homes, oOen mulCple Cmes. Our businesses and lives were disrupCon, and many destroyed. Our medical centres and hospitals were at grave risk of being burnt down during this crisis. 33 lives were lost Australia wide and over 400 deaths were aBributed to the smoke polluCon. We know all too well the cost of climate inacCon.” “Now as we prepare for a future of worsening bushfires, floods, soaring temperatures and storms, we must address the root cause - worsening climate change. And when our government, especially the minister who’s role it is to help us reduce our emissions, in line with the Paris agreement, is actually doing the opposite, he must be called out on this. It's a kick in the guts to our communiCes to see the direcCon Angus Taylor and the Morrison Government want to take us. We deserve beBer.” “As a doctor on the front line of the bushfire crisis, I’m passionate advocate for seeing our country focus on a healthy and green recovery post COVID-19 , as are many of the Doctors in the Eurobodalla who have also signed this leBer. Kids go to the wall with green-themed calendar With some sound advice for shoppers, Eurobodalla’s kids have made it easy to plan ahead with their 2021 Eurobodalla Environmental Calendar. For over two decades, fourth grade students from the shire’s primary Vol 16 September 15th 2017 schools have created arCsCc and posiCve messages on an environmental theme, with the best selected for 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 an annual wall calendar. Eurobodalla Council’s natural resources supervisor Heidi Thomson said this year students were reminding us to “think before you buy”.

“The kids know each and every one of us can make a difference,” Ms Thomson said. “They’ve painted and drawn some great calendar images that bring to mind different ways we can cut down on waste when we shop. For example, buy products without mulCple layers of soO-plasCc packaging. Or, let manufacturers know you don’t like everything wrapped in so much plasCc. “I love how the students tell it like it is, with images saying ‘do something right for once, buy nude food!’ and ‘the only soluCon is you’.”

Printed on 100 per cent recycled paper and available free from the shire’s libraries, in the foyer of the Council administraCon building in Moruya, the Batemans Bay depot, Narooma and Batemans Bay visitor centres and the Mogo Book Store, Ms Thomson (below right) said the calendars “make a great addiCon to home and office walls, and beyond”.

Grammar is taking local readers by storm.

Now, Eurobodalla Libraries are excited to present a special talk by the dicConary authors for NAIDOC week, with the community invited to the Moruya Library from 6pm on Wednesday 11th November to hear dicConary authors and siblings Patricia Ellis, Kerry Boyenga and Waine Donovan talk about the history behind the dicConary and the importance of revitalising the local Dhurga language.

Speaking at the dicConary launch in July this year, Waine Donovon said local indigenous people “now have our own dicConary, for our own language, for our own people”.

“We didn’t give our language away, it was taken from us,” added Kerry Boyenga.

The trio soon discovered Dhurga was far from exCnct. As the dicConary came to fulfilment, “we were surprised at the number of words we already knew,” said Patricia Ellis.

The Dhurga DicConary and Learner’s Grammar is the most comprehensive compilaCon of the Dhurga language to date, with more than 730 words translated to and from English. In just five months since publicaCon, the dicConary has sold more than 1,100 copies.

Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of The NaConals Michael McCormack said this was the largest grant awarded under the Program’s publishing stream, with more than 100 grant agreements now executed.

“This money will support news gathering in regional communiCes, ensuring local content will conCnue to be wriBen by local journalists,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“Local news maBers because local stories maBer and as a former regional newspaper editor, I know the importance of Australian Community Media’s network of outlets – that’s why we are backing 91 of them with a more than $10 million investment.

“This brings stability for local journalists, ensuring they can conCnue their important work with the certainty that their organisaCon’s boBom-line has been bolstered by the Federal Government.

“The network of ACM papers delivers important public interest journalism, keeping our regional and remote communiCes informed and connected.

"This funding can support a broad range of acCviCes including staff wages, training and technology upgrades, enabling this organisaCon to keep delivering important news services to their communiCes."

Bushfire triptych is this year's Basil Sellers people’s choice winner Charred leaves falling from the sky. They were a potent portent of Vol 16 Septemberbushfires, 15th 2017 and one captured by arCst Karyn last summer’s 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Thompson aOer her Verona property, south of Cobargo, came under aBack on New Year’s Eve. Her triptych Portents captures views of burning ridgelines viewed from her property homestead, each panel overlaid with one of the “charred leaves that spiralled from the sky that aOernoon”.

The large artwork has resonated with 2,300 plus visitors to the Basil Sellers Art Prize exhibiCon, taking out the people’s choice award aOer voCng closed on Sunday.

“I’m honoured and delighted,” Ms Thompson said.

“Portents was not so much about what was happening at the Cme but capturing the feeling. The posiCve response means so much to me – how it has resonated with so many other people, their stories, their experiences.”

Ms Thompson said she began the work in early January but it took a while to finish it.

“I wanted to convey the story but was feeling unsure of how to proceed,” she said.

“I think art is an important part of reflecCng on and responding to life – life’s difficulCes and joys.”

Ms Thompson said she moved to the area in 2015, first to Quaama then to the historic property Avalon at Verona. Ms Thompson and her partner stayed to defend their home on New Year’s Eve. “It is a very old property established in 1908. We have six acres surrounded by dairy farming – some of which made up the original property.”

Eurobodalla Council’s arts coordinator Indi Carmichael congratulated Ms Thompson, saying the 2020 Basil Sellers Art Prize had drawn an incredible array of talent this year.

“As ever, the people’s choice award was hotly contested,” Ms Carmichael said.

“Two other works came in close but the powerful symbols Karyn captured in Portents really struck a chord with viewers.

“As an interesCng aside, Karyn also worked as project architect with Munns Sly Moore Architects on the Basil Sellers ExhibiCon Centre, home of the art prize, helping to develop the building’s design.”

The Basil Sellers Art Prize runs at the Bas unCl 4pm on Sunday 7 November.

A devastaCng loss for the community of Moruya, the Eurobodalla and15th the2017 many visitors that know and love her.

High winds and torrenCal rain took its toll over the weekend.

For me, her lush green beauty, grace and strength brought great comfort during the horrors of the bushfires as they raged all around us.

A 'beacon of hope', as central located with the community seeking shelter at the evacuaCon centre. She stood there strong, green, ancient. A landmark providing hope that 'this too will pass'.

Well over 120 years old this wonderful old tree will hopefully live on with moves to celebrate the tree and the Moruya history it shared.

Night works on George Bass Drive Night works to improve a secCon of George Bass Drive between Beach Road and Joes Creek, near Batemans Bay High School, begin this month.

Eurobodalla Council will upgrade the road pavement and surface between 6pm and 6am, from Sunday 8 to Thursday 12 November, and Sunday 15 to Thursday 19 November. Minor day works from Wednesday 4 November will prepare the road.

The project will replace the current gravel pavement with a stronger and more water resistant deep-liO asphalt.

Council’s infrastructure director Warren Sharpe said the current pavement was nearing the end of its useful life.

“The new pavement is design to cater for the increasing road traffic using this by-pass route, including heavy vehicles,” he said.

“The new pavement will be 290mm thick and has been designed for a 60-year life. This should reduce the level of maintenance going forward, reducing inconvenience to the community in the future of this hightraffic road.”

Traffic control will be in place for the work and commuters should use Beach Road as an alternate route where possible.

Those using the route to access homes should allow extra Cme to travel through the area. Every effort will be made to minimise noise but nearby residents may hear heavy machinery operaCng. The project has been made possible through Council funds and a $585,000 grant from the NSW Government under the Fixing Local Roads program.

Batemans Bay Bushwalkers news The Batemans Bay Bushwalkers have completed two walks over the past fortnight. Rain over the past week caused two walks to be cancelled.

Some Cme ago, the Club heard about the locaCon of some old mine shaOs and infrastructure in a small Vol 16 September 15th 2017 pocket of forest adjacent to North Narooma in an area not previously explored by the Batemans Bay 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 111April Julystate 12th 2018 2019 Bushwalkers. Nine walkers set out to complete a 10km medium hike in the area. Unfortunately, the area has been used as a car dumping ground for many years and the walkers came across at least 6 rusCng vehicles, one quite a recent addiCon. Walkers were dismayed to see a high point overlooking the inlet currently being used for dumping rubbish.

The bushwalkers managed to escape the interfering hand of man by leaving the main tracks and cuXng through the bush to the mining area. This consists of several horizontal shaOs, as well as some concrete structures probably used as fooCngs for machinery. There are also 2 areas of verCcal shaOs, fenced in to prevent people from falling in.

Finally the group walked to Lewis Island, connected to the mainland by a boardwalk, to enjoy the clear waters of Wagonga Inlet.

A few days later, thirteen walkers met at Barlings Beach to complete a 15km medium hike. The Walkers headed inland along Bevian Rd, keen to see how the bush was recovering from the fires, whilst sighCng an echidna, a camel, various birds and dodging heavy vehicles en route to Rosedale Beach. The cool ocean breeze was a welcome relief as the walkers wandered along the beaches and rock pla`orms to Blacks Beach for morning tea and a quick swim. The sky was beginning to look menacing as they reached Guerrilla Bay and the views on the beauCful cliff top secCon from Burrewarra Point through to Franks Beach were dramaCcally grey and punctuated by brief light showers. Wildflowers were sCll highlighCng the path through the banksias as the group picked up the pace towards Franks Beach where it was decided to skip lunch and finish the walk before the showers turned to rain.

While rain does not deter the walkers, it can cause condiCons on the hike to become treacherous. The Club takes its safety seriously. In the lead up to a scheduled walk, condiCons will be monitored and if there are any concerns the walk will be cancelled, as was the case with the two walks that did not proceed. Bushwalking is a risky business, accidents do happen and injuries do result. The Batemans Bay Bushwalkers have a shared goal of finding, exploring and enjoying the natural secrets of our corner of Australia. 28 December 7th,of2017 Vol 48 2018 There’s been a lot community discussion about the development or redevelopment of the Mackay Park 111April July 27th 12th 2019 precinct in Batemans that will now include a new AquaCc Centre and some other public assets.

But when discussions began and elecCon promises were being made by Councillor Lindsay Brown and Councillor Liz Innes about the MacKay Park precinct, including the acquisiCon of the Old Bowling Club Site, the promises both of them made indicated that the community might be see improved publicly owned assets like the swimming pool, community centre etc. It was improvements that were proposed to be included in a redevelopment of the amalgamated site, and promises that the new Community Rooms would be as good or beBer than the present facility, at Museum Place.

But now we learn that isn’t intended to be. Match box size faciliCes are to be provided, reducing the viability of what will be another accumulaCng or compounding public liability.

Our council is aware of the potenCal for a new compounding financial liability that will require significant ratepayer subsidy’s for years. But those employed to assist our elected representaCves like the General Manager and other senior staff are apparently pushing ahead with the aXtude of selling off or leasing other community owned assets in an aBempt to financially manage the newly created financial public liability.

However it’s now publicly known some of our elected representaCves are not happy about the idea of potenCally leasing or selling the Batemans Bay Community centre to assist with underwriCng the newly created MacKay Park AquaCc Centre financial liability.

Councillors Lindsay Brown and Councillor Liz Innes would do the shires residents well by honouring their public promises associated with the acquisiCon of Old Batemans Bay Bowling Club Site and the redevelopment of the MacKay Park precinct, wouldn’t they? By the way, what happened to the sea pool?

SOLDIERS MEMORIAL.– the Hon. Secretary, Mr. D. Cameron, notifies that the unveiling of the Nelligen Soldiers’ Memorial will take place on 31st Dec. A concert and ball will be held the same evening. There will also be sports on New Year’s Day, with a cinderella at night.

MANAGER’S VISIT.– Mr. Miller, manager of the I.S.N. Co., was at Bateman’s Bay last week. He intends to visit Moruya and further south almost immediately. The primary object of his projected visit here is in connection with the joining up of the two local wharves, provided he obtains the sympathy of the timber shipping fraternity.

BAD ROAD.– Mr. R. Backhouse, carrier, struck a piece of bad luck this week (says the Braidwood “Dispatch.”) While on his way from Nelligen with his loaded team one of his horses slipped coming up the mountain and snapped his leg. The animal had to be killed. The mountain road, by the way, is in a scandalously bad state, and ought to receive the speedy attention of the Eurobodalla Shire Council.

Moruya devotees of dancing are rigidly faithful to the old style of stepping the light fantastic. The modern foxtrots, besitations and shimmey shakes seem to have no place on local ballroom programmes.

MASONIC BALL. In accordance with their annual custom the members of the local body of Masons held a successful ball on Friday night last. Good weather favoured the function and there was a fair attendance, including visitors from surrounding centres. At one o’clock the ball opened with the Grand March under the director-ship of Wor. Bro. W. Jermyn. This was a very effective sight, the pleasing tones of the blue and silver Masonic regalia relieving the sombre black of the usual evening dress and the ladies’ many-hued costumes helping to make a colourful picture. From then till the small hours of the morning the ball was kept merrily rolling to music of the best, supplied by Miss Kurz and Mr. J. Buckley. ...

NOMINATIONS CLOSE.—Horse owners are reminded that nominations for the Moruya Race Club’s Spring Meeting close at 4 p.m. on Monday next, 8th inst.

LECTURE FOR PRODUCERS.– Next Thursday night Mr. A. Crane will lecture on co-operation amongst Farmers and Producers in the Shire Hall. Mr. Crane is an A.I.F. man, who saw active service, and afterwards studied the farming methods as carried out in France and Great Britain. As this is a matter of importance to all producers there should be a good attendance, and everybody is invited. Mr. Crane is a good speaker and a practical man from the Department of Agriculture.

WATTLE BARK. Business in bark continues slow, and our sales during the past fortnight total only 427 bags, all being in good order and of medium to heavy substance. Only this class is acceptable by tanners, and as there is a large quantity of light and poor quality bark on hand we fear a further fall in values of this grade is inevitable. We quote: Best South Coast chopped £12 to £13; fair quality £ 6 to £ 8; damaged £4 to £6 per ton.

In Bermagui the local Indigenous language, Dhurga – the language grown out of millennia of embedded connec5on with this land that we are privileged to live on – is being shared with the children, shaping their percep5ons of the world around them. There are plans to spread the pride, culture and wisdom.

Many of Cobargo’s school children and staff were directly impacted by the Black Summer fires. Their resilience, care and strength are a beacon of inspira5on. The ongoing generosity of many organisa5ons and individuals who con5nue to stand with and support those s5ll in the wake of lifechanging experiences is also inspira5onal.

The teachers have crea5vely integrated the giAs and ac5vi5es to consolidate basic educa5onal aims such as literacy, as well as more fundamental life lessons of resilience, interconnec5on, reciprocity and care for each other, their families and community. The way the school community has responded to trauma5c experience offers a model for 5mes of transi5on, recovery and crea5vely applied learning. The words of Cobargo School’s Principal, Gillian Parkes, sum up this posi5ve direc5on – ‘We have a strong sense of community and a strong bond to look aAer each other and support growth and resilience as we take on life’s journey and learn new things each day!’

Youth Film Workshops Far South Film is giving young filmmakers the chance to learn valuable hands-on skills from screen Vol 16 September 15th 2017 industry professionals at their 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 upcoming Film School workshops.

These weekend workshops carry on the tradiCon of the Footprint Theatre Film Schools held in previous years.

A 2-day workshop for newcomers aged 10 to 16 will be held over two Saturdays on 14 and 21 November at Mumbulla School in Bega. On day one parCcipants will act, direct, operate a camera and learn some pro tricks for framing shots, lighCng subjects and recording great sound. On day two students will learn ediCng techniques.

A 2-day workshop for more experienced filmmakers aged 12 to 18 will be held over two Sundays on 15 and 22 November at the Mumbulla School, Bega. The workshop will take parCcipants film making skills to a new level with a more in-depth look at how to breakdown a script, create a shotlist, schedule and manage a film shoot. Working as a team in front of or behind the camera, students will have access to all footage shot on day one and be able to edit their own rough cut version ready for feedback before fine tuning their edit on day two.

Moruya workshop will be Sunday 22 Nov at Mechanics Ins3tute Hall in Moruya for ages 10 to 18.

Filmmaking 101.

Each workshop costs between $20 and $40 to a/end.

This project is supported by Arts NSW's Country Arts Support Program, a devolved funding program administered by the Regional Arts NSW and South East Arts on behalf of the NSW Government. The Regional Arts Fund is an Australian Government iniCaCve that supports sustainable and cultural development in regional, remote and very remote Australia.

The Gallery Mogo is a CABBI venture, that is open to local and regional visual art pracCConers. Kevin Ward is a longstanding member of CABBI, who has travelled extensively accumulaCng the reference material for his work, parCcularly his Cme spent in Mexico. Kevin’s trademark canvases are large and intensely colourful and use iridescent inks.

A bird’s eye view of corals, coastlines and river systems are painted in an expressive and abstract form. Kevin says, “I learnt to love the smell and colours of the sea and the sound of waves breaking onshore.” “Nature’s Causeway”, is indicaCve of Kevin’s painCngs. It is a large seascape diagonally split by a sandbar where the wash of a strong current drags’ ocean waters into the calm, blue waters of a reef lagoon.

Recurring themes of arid lands and sea weave through Kevin’s life and art, winning many prizes with his stunning, large ink and acrylic canvases.

He says, “I love the fluidity and flow of the inks and acrylics and the added textural effects that can be gained by other addiCves”.

The arid lands in another canvas, “VegetaCon Line”, shows the desert with its mixes of ochres, browns and oranges against a pale, aqua sky, it captures the sense of both empCness and yearning that oOen come from these places.

Spring Youth Music Fes3val Good to Go No audiences, but plenty of amazing Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th,Four 2017 Winds Spring Youth Vol 48 2018 musicianship!

111April July 27th 12thThe 2019 Music FesCval is on again, and will be a bit different this year. In a normal year, 850 to 900 kids would converge on the Four Winds site for a mass celebraCon of musicianship, composiCon, collaboraCon, encouragement, song and symphony.

Thanks to COVID, and a set of rules around singing and wind instruments, this year Four Winds will take the fesCval into the schools themselves, and also record student and guest performances in the Windsong Pavilion at Four Winds.

In the spirit of NAIDOC week, on Saturday 14th Nov, local Koori Choir Djinama Yilaga, will perform new songs in Dhurga language, fronted by young members Shakeela Williams and Requia Campbell. The songs have been described as being “thrilling to hear in the Yuin NaCon’s Dhurga language”.

The choir will be travelling to Tathra, Tanja, Candelo, Tilba and Bermagui Schools to share the music with students on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th. Joining them will be members of Four Winds ‘ArCsts in Schools’ program On Friday 13th Members of Sydney Youth Orchestra are coming to perform for school kids, and will then join our own Bega Valley Youth Orchestra for a performance of three pieces. The performance, in the Windsong Pavilion on Sunday 15th is being digitally recorded.

The Bega Valley Youth Orchestra and Chamber Strings groups are very busy rehearsing, and individual performers and other local students will be showcasing their composiCons and musicianship throughout the weekend.

Although taking place without an audience, Saturday and Sunday 14th & 15th November the walls of the Windsong will reverberate with music played on instruments ranging from Cn whistles to harpsichords, strings to drums, as our digital first team record their performances for each young performer to keep.

Four Winds Harpsichord will be brought out for a lively Vivaldi piece along with 2 cellos, performed by young pianist and composer Hunter Bailey-WaBs and student Nyah Cockle along with music teacher Anna MarCn-Scrase. Many works composed by students will be Premiered.

On Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th Kindergarten to Year 2s in the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla will be visited by Zeeko! Zeeko are local musician, composer David HewiB – percussion & vocals, Jenny Lang – guitar, vocals, and Jess Campia – bass guitar, percussion, vocals. Zeeko sing songs and tell stories of courage, cooperaCon and ingenuity in the face of a changing climate. They will be travelling to schools in Bermagui, Narooma, Tilba, Tanja and Tathra.

The digital recordings, performances and workshops are all professionally created and each student is treated as a serious arCst. They are supplied with rehearsal space, coaches, schedules, halyards and catering, green rooms and transport and their video… all in order to foster, encourage and nourish their music pracCce and future dreams.

The Basil Sellers Art Prize 2020 winners and exhibi3on ENDS THIS WEEKEND Vol 16 September 15th 2017 The winners of the 28 December 7th, highly 2017 anCcipated Basil Sellers Art Prize 2020 were Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 announced in a special online broadcast in October. This presCgious biennial compeCCon draws the cream of local arCsts and those across NSW and the ACT with a $25,000 prize pool.

The $20,000 major prize, generously supported by Mr Basil Sellers AM, was awarded to Peter MaBhew Yates for his portrait 'ConnecCon' while local arCst Raewyn Lawrence was named the 2020 Eurobodalla ArCst Prize Winner for her work 'Smoke'. The accolade awarded Raewyn $5,000 in prize money and the opportunity for a solo exhibiCon at the Bas in 2021.

The works of selected ďŹ nalists feature in the Basil Sellers Art Prize 2020 ExhibiCon, now on show at the Bas. During the exhibiCon visitors can nominate their favourite artwork for the $500 People's Choice Award. The votes will be counted and winner announced at the end of the exhibiCon.

Broulee Runners November 4th 2020 Warm condiCons greeted the 22 actual runners in this evening’s Broulee run over 5 kilometres. We also had 13 virtual runners, who performed over the 3 distances. We had one new starter in Zoe Whymark, who did a strong 5 kilometres.

Once again young Tino LopresC performed with disCncCon coming 5th in the 5 kilometres.

Outstanding personal best Cmes were recorded by Selby Johnston and Bernie Lambert over the 5kilometre distance. Selby improved by 4 minutes 55 seconds and Bernie by 1 minute 18 seconds.

Your UP TO DATE Fishing report courtesy of Tackle World Moruya Moruya River.

With Moruya river looking a lot like the Yarra at the moment, the fishing is going to be hard both from the banks and from a boat or kayak. I have had Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, few reports of 2017 flathead around the mouth of Malabar Crk this week Vola48 April 27th 111 July 12th 2018 2019 taken on soO plasCcs with the aid of plenty of scent. Apart from that, there hasn’t been a lot to talk about coming from the river.

A lot of you will have seen my drone footage of Kiora bridge here on the page. 2 days prior to this being taken, the river was a meter over the bridge at this same spot. The amount of mud that is coming down is sCll a testament to how bad the fires were earlier in the year. A lot of hills are sCll barren of regrowth, and as a result a lot of soil is being washed down out of the mountains during every rain event we have.

The only advise I can give you, is to fish the deeper holes with oily baits, or add plenty of scent to your lures. Concentrate on soO plasCcs with plenty of flash and vibraCon potenCal, the same can be said for hardy body lures.

Tuross River.

The report for Tuross is a carbon copy of Moruya this week, sorry folks. The good folks down at the Tuross boat shed had another clean up to do this week as a result of debris and mud coming down the river with this flood event. Although not as high as the last one, there is sCll plenty of logs and rubbish conCnuing to be washed down with every rain event we have.

Rock and Beach.

Our first bit of good news, as the salmon have again been spoBed down around the Bingie area beaches this week. Graham took the car for a test drive this week, and spoBed a good sized school around Bingie headland. Any of the local beaches away from either Moruya or Tuross river mouths are the preferred opCons this weekend, as the water will be ALOT cleaner. There is a bit of southerly current pushing up the coast at the moment, as can be seen on the sea temperature graphic posted below. There have also been reports of a few nice bream and whiCng being taken from the guBers in close to the beach.

Fingers xed, I can get some drone footage of these schools this weekend.

Offshore.

Unfortunately not a lot to report this week, as no one has really been able to get out. With a clearer weekend forecast, fingers xed some of you are able to get out, and away from the dirty water, and into some fish. Let us know how you go.

On a side note, I have been geXng quite a few reports that MariCme are out and about on the water, happy to pull any boater over and go through their safety gear with them.

Make sure everything onboard is up to date and compliance ready, as the skipper, it is your responsibility.
