editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, This week saw the once loved Batemans Bay Community Centre stripped away from the community and given instead to a Quango Vol 16 September 15th agency 2017 who consider the building as a convenient annex to expand their office space.

Vol 111 July 12th 2019 At a Cme when enormous effort is being directed towards mental health and building community spirits and resilience the heart of the Batemans Bay community is being ripped away from them to meet the $19 million gap that council must meet in its new Mackay Park pool.

The community had been assured that their centre was safe unCl such Cme as the doors of the new Mackay Park facility opened and the community could inspect the promised replacement meeCng rooms to determine if they were in fact "like-for-like" as promised.

Council staff have decided to renege on this promise and instead are fast tracking the sale of the community owned building by way of removing the community from the premises and leasing it out to a third party.

SEARMS Aboriginal Housing CorporaCon have been advised that they were the successful tenderer for the building aIer Council staff called for expressions of interest saying they had "received several unsolicited approaches to lease the centre during the year."

In granCng the lease the majority of 15 community groups, which includes more than six hundred members of the University of the Third Age, have been told to relocate to other venues. Council have offered the incenCve of rentfree for six months to venues that are neither saCsfactory, convenient to public transport, level for disabled, nor fitfor-purpose such as having the required storage and the specifically designed sprung dance floor of the current hall in place for older members of the community to enjoy without associated impacts.

The community centre – hall, training room, meeCng room, and consultaCon room has long been hired, on a regular basis, by a wide cross secCon of community groups and as such the Centre has covered its own costs without any Council subsidy, as one might find at a pool, sporCng field or any of the many other halls and Council owned venues across the shire.

Nevertheless, this Council (Innes, Thomson, Tait, Nathan, Brown and Pollock) have idenCfied that they wish to lease and then sell the Batemans Bay Community Centre in order to direct funds to the operaConal costs of running the new Mackay Park Centre.

In an about turn on a clear promise to the community that Council would do nothing in regards to the Community Centre unCl such Cme as the front doors of Mackay Park open they have now blatantly ignored the protests of the community, ignored a 1000 signature peCCon and voted 6-3 to evict the community from their own centre and install an agency at a discounted rate.

PresenCng to Eurobodalla Councillors at the Public Forum session prior to the final vote of Council the SEARMS Aboriginal Housing CorporaCon CEO Kim Sinclair said "Our Expression of Interest will seek to work with current users groups where possible".

Council Mayne asked the CEO if she had had a chance to meet with the 15 groups of users.

Her response was "The only one we have had direct with and included in our EOI was meals on Wheels but we've also approached and included in our EOI other community organisaCons that currently provide services up and down the Far South Coast to share the space with us."

editorial and Wallaga Lake communiCes and that their intenCon was to occupy the Batemans Bay Community Centre and sublease to other like groups to provide a "wheel and spoke" approach of a one-stop shop.

The CEO said "We have limited resources and do not have the ability to lease at commercial rates".

During the ensuing debate of whether to lease a community centre to a third party and evict the community from their own building Councillor Anthony Mayne argued that Council wanted to take Commercial over Community and split the community. He clearly advised that he was foreshadowing rescission moCon. That rescission moCon was lodged today at 12 noon and will go to a special meeCng next Thursday 17th December at 2pm. It is understood that under currants of dissent from a number of councillors sought to block the rescission moCon. With the councillors having voted six against three on Tuesday 8th Dec to lease the building it will take two of the six to cross the floor and support the rescission moCon. With Innes and her co-Community Alliance subordinates in check the Mayor will also have the support of fellow "lock the gate" councillor James Thomson. Councillor Rob Pollock has clearly indicated in the past that he accepts that the community is not being given the "like-for-like" community faciliCes they were promised however he appears swayed in believing that the waiving of hire fees for the next six months on other council venues that has been offered might see the community transiCon happily away from their centre and make them more open and accepCng of the leasing and future sale.

The snake in the bag will be Councillor Lindsay Brown who managed last week to openly represent his Narooma community on a local maRer yet showed liRle if any interest in the Batemans Bay issue as if it was on the Moon. Clr Brown has already begun his campaigning for Mayor in the 2021 Local Government elecCons in September and has much to repair in the scarring he took from the Batemans Bay community over his failures in managing and responding to the Batemans Bay bat issue.

The Batemans Bay Community Centre might just be the key issue he sees to win votes away from Innes in the north. It depends, in the end, on where he has already agreed to preferences in his bid to be Mayor 2021. The BBay community wishes appear, in this instance, to be secondary to his aspiraCons While the rescission moCon lodge today had not been formally lodged at Tuesday's meeCng the intenCon was clear.

Regardless of this the General Manager, under the delegated authority of the adopted moCon this has now advised SEARMS that they were the successful applicant.

The proviso of the lease arrangement is that Meals on Wheels, who use the community centre’s kitchen and, having no suitable alternaCve currently available, are able to conCnue to access as part of any lease agreement.

It will be interesCng to see how the vote goes next Thursday.

Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes and invited emergency services and agency heads including RFS, NSW Police, SES, Fire & Rescue, Army, EssenCal Energy, NSW Health, Local Land Services, Disaster Welfare and Surf Life Saving among others, at the unveiling of a commemoraCve plaque located in the Council administraCon building forecourt in Moruya to gave thanks to the many people who served Eurobodalla during the 2019-20 bushďŹ re emergency and the recovery eorts since.

In co-unveiling the plaque the Ms Phillips said "It was wonderful to join with members of the community today to commemorate how the community pulled together through the bush ďŹ res and the ongoing bushďŹ re recovery. It was a real chance to say thank you to the community."

The plaque reads: “Eurobodalla Council gives thanks for the courage and compassion of all who helped through the dark days of the emergency and recovery eorts since.â€?

Deputy Mayor Rob Pollock read a message from Prime Minister ScoR Morrison that spoke to the courage and strength of the people of Eurobodalla.

The 2019-20 summer bushďŹ res devastated Eurobodalla with almost 400,000 hectares burnt and 500 homes lost. Three people lost their lives.

ARendees were provided with commemoraCve pins that featured black cockatoos and a banksia. “The black cockatoos symbolise the power of spirit. In Aboriginal lore these celebratory birds bring happiness and contentment. They are o en said to herald rain. Banksias symbolise regenera on, storing energy in tubers for quick regrowth and woody seedpods which burst once ďŹ re passes by.â€?

COVID-19 detected at Batemans Bay sewage treatment plant People in the Batemans Bay area are being urged to come forward for tesCng they have any symptoms aIer fragments of Vol 16 September 15thif2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Volvirus 48 27th 2018 111April July 12th 2019 the that causes COVID-19 were detected at the sewage treatment plant.

The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage may reflect the presence of people who have recovered from COVID-19 such as people released from hotel isolaCon returning to their place of residence.

However, NSW Health is concerned there could be other acCve cases in the local community in people who have not been tested and who might incorrectly assume their symptoms are just a cold.

NSW Health also conCnues to urge people in south-western Sydney to get tested if they have any symptoms aIer fragments of the virus that causes COVID-19 were detected at the Liverpool sewage treatment plant.

While tesCng numbers have increased during the week, there are sCll too few people coming forward for tesCng. With restricCons eased and borders having reopened, now is not the Cme to be complacent.

Please come forward for tesCng immediately even with mild symptoms. Don’t wait to see if your runny nose or sore throat goes away.

Second man has been charged over an alleged affray in Moruya A second man has been charged over an alleged affray in Moruya at the weekend.

About 8pm on Friday 4 December 2020, police were called to a home on Evans Street, Moruya, following Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 reports a man was aRempCng to break into a home.

Officers from South Coast Police District aRended and aRempted to arrest a 33-year-old man on Woodbridge Avenue; however, it’s alleged a group of men hindered the officers, with one deliberately coughing at police.

As police aRempted to arrest the second man, it’s further alleged they were surrounded by approximately 20 people who were acCng aggressively, before oleoresin capsicum spray was deployed.

The two men police were aRempCng to arrest fled the scene, before one returned to the scene a short Cme later and handed himself over to police.

The 33-year-old man was taken to Batemans Bay Police StaCon and charged with resist officer in execuCon of duty, wilfully obstruct officer in execuCon of duty, escape police custody, not comply noCced direcCon re spiWng/coughing (COVID-19), and assault officer in execuCon of duty.

He was granted condiConal bail to appear in Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday 11 January 2021.

Following further inquiries, a second 33-year-old man was arrested at a home in Braidwood about 2.20pm yesterday (Wednesday 9 December 2020).

He was taken to Batemans Bay Police StaCon and charged with inCmidate police officer during civil disorder incident, two counts of wilfully obstruct police officer, breach Apprehended Violence Order and malicious damage (DV).

The man was refused bail to appear in Batemans Bay Local Court today (Thursday 10 December 2020).

Inquiries are conCnuing.

The signs include the text "walawaani njindiwan" (which can be translated to safe journeys everyone) and includes Umbarra, the black duck Yuin totem that acknowledges the tradiConal owners of the land The approved criteria for the new signs requires: • Using local quarried stone • Using local Cmber species • Turquoise colour representaCve or our beaches and waterways • Sweeping curve representaCve of our coastline, rolling hills and mountains • A laser cut paRern of Umbarra based on artwork by a Yuin arCst • Local Dhurga language, walawaani njindiwan, which can be translated to ‘safe journeys everyone’ • Orange-brown colour of rusted steel which is found throughout Eurobodalla in natural stone, bark and heritage buildings • ReflecCve leRering to ensure they are effecCve at night The new signs will be steadily rolled out replacing the controversial "polystyrene pillars" that were a "Captains Call" with no consultaCon with either the community, the Council's own Arts commiRee or anyone who might claim to be an arCst.

Untold Eurobodalla: what makes us &ck Vol 16 September 15th 2017 An exhibiCon exploring 28 December 7th, 2017 what makes Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Eurobodalla special and some of the characters within it will open at the Bas this Friday night.

Untold Eurobodalla features the disCncCve stories of 26 local residents and examines the ways they contribute to the place they call home.

It is the work of arCsts and Eurobodalla residents Lee Grant and Amadis Lacheta, who sought to find out what makes where we live special, why people have chosen to seRle here, what creates culture in a place and how our community contributes to and celebrates that culture.

Over the past few weeks the Bas team has taken the exhibiCon to the streets, pasCng larger-than-life portrait murals in prominent locaCons in Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma.

Council’s creaCve arts coordinator Indi Carmichael says the black-and-white portraits are an entree to what is a fulfilling experience of photography, film and wriRen word, bringing their stories to life.

“The driving force behind this exhibiCon is learning the stories we don’t hear about, or don’t oIen hear about,” she said.

“At a Cme when many are facing significant challenges, it’s a nice way to celebrate the strengths of our community. It reminds us of what really maRers and to cherish what we have.”

A diverse public program accompanies the exhibiCon based on the theme of community and storytelling. Events range from a ClaymaCon workshop for kids and the usual meet-the-arCst talk, to art therapy workshops, an arCst residency in the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden and a performance-based response to the bushfires.

Calls for Na&onal Parks to clean up Shelly Beach ahead of holidays Shelly Beach at Moruya South Head has long been the Vol 16 September 15th 2017 preferred choice for many who live in or visit 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 111April Julysheltered 12th 2018 2019 the region. The beach is part of the Eurobodalla NaConal Park, under the care and control of NaConal Parks, who have erected a covered picnic shelter and provided toilets.

The beach itself is normally quite narrow as it sits inside the Moruya River mouth. As such finding a secCon of sand to set down your towel is at a premium. The beach in its present state offers liRle in the way of any welcome to locals or visitors who might choose to swim at this popular sheltered beach.

In speaking with locals over the issue The Beagle was told "The beach has been leI in this state since the February floods. At King Tide Cme some of this ends up back floaCng in the river and river mouth posing a very big risk to powerboats, surfers and swimmers. Running into a semi submerged log in any form is high risk for damage and injury."

"As can be seen people have already shiIed some of the bigger logs behind the fence and into the undergrowth as well as building a perfect bonfire stack.

Another told The Beagle "The Moruya Surf Club run a community service for disabled members of the public where they supply very expensive beach/water wheelchairs that run on large soI inflatable Cres cosCng well in excess of $4000 per chair. Shelly is the perfect locaCon to allow water access to those that normally couldn’t get into the water because it is a lot safer than an ocean beach but at present there is no way these beach chairs can access Shelly."

"If NaConal Parks are the managers of Shelly then the equaCon is simple, manage it and look aIer it or hand it over to someone that will." "It isn’t a remote wilderness beach visited by few. Shelly over the holiday period has literally hundreds of visitors each day. It is at Cmes patrolled by the Moruya Surf Club where they require good quick access for soI tyre vehicles and Rubber Rescue Boats."

"At present Shelly is unusable. Sadly we are in the process of having to organising local volunteers to turn out this Saturday to try to clean up the mess but that shouldn’t have to happen.

"One operator on a powered machine would have the job done in a maRer of hours."

BBay Foreshore plan endorsed by Council On16 Tuesday 8 December, Vol September 15th 2017 Eurobodalla’s 28 December 7th, Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 councillors voted to2017 adopt the Batemans Bay Waterfront Masterplan and AcCvaCon Strategy.

The Council’s director of planning Lindsay Usher said the plan posiCons the CBD foreshore as an inviCng backdrop for Batemans Bay’s residents and visitors.

“We want people to stay longer. This plan provides a blueprint so local business can flourish and visitors come back year-round – and tell their friends – because there’s always something happening at the Bay,” Mr Usher said.

“We need an interesCng, comfortable and safe environment that everyone can enjoy – big shady trees, beRer parking opCons, more seats, and easy access to the water. I can see the Clyde full of people, day and night, with all kinds of acCviCes going on.

“There’s too many vacant shops. We need to change things up and get people to stop, spend and stay in Batemans Bay.” The plan has been developed by Eurobodalla Council aIer extensive discussions with local community groups, business and tourism enterprises, landholders, and planning experts.

Council’s strategic planning officer Angie Radford said this shared vision for the waterfront paved the way to beRer use some of the open areas.

“The business chamber is already working with Council to make some of the smaller public spaces more inviCng to buskers and performance arCsts, using the draI masterplan for guidance,” Ms Radford said.

“Overwhelmingly people are looking for more to see and do, with free passage along the foreshore and into the CBD. Easy access to the water is a priority for many, with wider paths and steps – not rocks – down to the water, and some sandy areas too.”

The endorsed plan allows for the Clyde Street Boat Ramp to remain, with the opCon for removal at a later date. It is currently closed during construcCon of the new Batemans Bay bridge.

Over 20 years ago, the pioneering Western Australian rock lobster fishery became the world’s first MSC cerCfied sustainable fishery. Around half of Australian seafood is now MSC cerCfied, well above the global average of 15% made up of over 400 fisheries around the world. Marine Stewardship Council Program Director of Oceania, Anne Gabriel, welcomes the news for the rock lobster fishers and for Australians who can now enjoy a wild and sustainable lobster-filled Christmas thanks to Coles.

Slow down, it’s holiday &me Visitors and residents are reminded about the importance of children’s Vol 16 September 15th 2017 road safety as the busy 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 summer season approaches.

Eurobodalla Council has installed temporary banners at 10 local bus stops urging drivers to ‘slow down’ and for adults to hold the hand of children on or near roads.

The banners were provided through the LiRle Blue Dinosaur FoundaCon, which aims to help create safer environments for children and families on holiday.

The FoundaCon was established in memory of fouryear-old Tom McLaughlin, who tragically passed away in a pedestrian road accident while on a Central Coast family vacaCon in 2014.

Council’s road safety officer Kate McDougall said Council was one of 25 local government areas parCcipaCng in the FoundaCon’s ‘It’s Holiday Time’ campaign.

Chief ExecuCve of SNSWLHD, Margaret BenneR, said despite the drop in presentaCons, clinicians have been kept busy with COVID-19. A total of 38,724 COVID-19 tests were completed across the District in both inpaCent and outpaCent seWngs during that period alone.

“All our staff are doing a wonderful job providing the best quality paCent care during this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. AddiConally, the District performed beRer than the statewide results, with urgent, semi -urgent and non-urgent surgery procedures all performing ahead of the state average,” Ms BenneR said.

“The most urgent paCents in our emergency departments were treated more quickly and, importantly, 100 per cent of urgent surgeries were performed on Cme. “We saw 82.3 per cent of paCents leave the ED within four hours, a 1.8 percentage point improvement on the same quarter in 2019, and beRer than the NSW state average of 71.5 per cent. More than 93 per cent of paCents were transferred from ambulance to ED staff within the 30-minute benchmark,” she said.

Ms BenneR said the figures come on the back of extensive investment by the NSW Government in a number of faciliCes across the District, including the $150 million Goulburn Hospital and Health Service redevelopment, with an upgraded Goulburn Base Hospital as the main element of the project.

Furthermore, $18.6 million is being spent redeveloping Cooma Hospital, and $200 million has been commiRed to building a new health facility in Eurobodalla.

Individual Hospital Results Batemans Bay District Hospital Batemans Bay District Hospital had 2752 ED presentaCons, down 25 per cent, or 916 fewer people compared with the same quarter in 2019. The proporCon of paCents leaving the ED within four hours was 83.1 per cent, ahead of the state target of 81 per cent, while the median Cme to leave the ED was one hour 50 minutes, well ahead of the NSW median of 2 hours 42 minutes.

ElecCve surgery performance at the hospital remained steady, with 100 per cent of the 123 elecCve surgery procedures being completed on Cme. Moruya District Hospital Moruya District Hospital had more than 2300 ED aRendances, down by nearly 16 per cent, or 433 fewer presentaCons, and recorded a consistent ED performance, with 75.2 per cent of paCents leaving the ED within four hours (the same result as the same quarter of 2019). Meanwhile, the median Cme to leave the ED was two hours 30 minutes, ahead of the NSW median.

The bushfire-themed educaConal trip, hosted

by Eurobodalla Council’s tourism staff, gave 106 Tourism Australia delegates a deeper insight into Eurobodalla for their work in helping the area recover through tourism markeCng both in Australia and abroad.

Tourism Australia is the Australian Government agency responsible for aRracCng internaConal visitors to Australia. It also has an increased focus on encouraging Australians to get out and explore their own backyard.

In 2019, Australians spent more than $80 billion on overnight trips and more than $26 billion on day trips.

It is hoped Tourism Australia will help Eurobodalla tap in to this growing market, parCcularly as COVID restricCons ease further.

On Tuesday and Wednesday Tourism Australia staff met local tourism operators to hear their experiences of the bushfires and how they are bouncing back.

The iCnerary included visits to Mogo Village, Mogo Wildlife Park and a networking dinner at Moruya Racecourse, as well as experiencing local tourism products firsthand.

Council’s events coordinator Tegan Benfield said these included an oyster tasCng kayak tour, a surf lesson, an e-bike tour and a bushwalk from Wasp Head to Cookies Beach.

“For the Tourism Australia staff, the visit not only demonstrated the region’s incredible resilience but also gave their markeCng, PR and social media teams a deeper insight,” she said.

“They are already looking at incorporaCng elements of Eurobodalla’s tourism offering into their domesCc markeCng, which is wonderful news.”

Ms Benfield said it was amazing for the Eurobodalla Tourism team to host the experience.

“While they were only here for a short Cme, we were able to give them a real taste for the region, with mulCple staff saying they will be coming back with their family and friends to explore further,” she said. beagle weekly : Vol 185 December 11th 2020

All donaCons, with the addiCon of another of $450, was presented to Batemans Bay RFS, Long Beach RFS and Broulee RFS this morning at JJJ Oriental Supermarket in Batemans Bay. Jan Frikken told The Beagle "In response to the bush fire crisis, the South Coast Community Support Group manage our donaCon and distribuCon point from the back of this supermarket.

"The Group created resources for evacuees a month before the State government stepped in. For example, asking community support for accommodaCon and transportaCon for people, pets and animals; donaCons for RFS volunteers and people in the community; organising to have cooked meals, giI and fuel vouchers and generators for people who had had power outages; organising volunteers to help people make phone calls and/or apply for bush fire recovery grants; and planning to organise a support group for people in the community to come together in a safe environment to chat and to debrief.

"It has been a tough year for all of us but the fire indeed brought the community together," Jan said.

Take a bow Rotarians Rohan Gleeson and Col Chesher, Business Chamber members Tubby Harrison, Rob Pollock, Col Chesher and Col Jay you have brought much needed Christmas cheer to our town (the lads finished close to midnight - how is that for community spirit) In the ongoing saga with EssenCal Energy over the annual installaCon of the lights on EssenCal Energy light poles the Rotary volunteers were required to spend over $2000 to have an engineers report on the wind effect of the light structures on the poles.

This was accomplished with ease but did reveal that EssenCal Energy couldn't provide the essenCal scaled CAD drawings for the task, instead offering only out of scale pdf images that made a nonsense of their request. The hurdles EssenCal Energy have placed in front of the Moruya Christmas lights each year have been many.

They wanted $20 million in Public Liability insurance which was met with $50 million. They said the poles were live at the point of aRachment and required a variety of measures prior to safe installaCon. When it was revealed that if the pole was live half way up the metal lightpole then the base too would be live.

EssenCal Energy backed away from this when the community were warned not to touch the poles and dogs advised not to piss on them.

The requirement for approval is sCll annual and it appears that each year requires a new hurdle to be overcome. Next will be the insistence that a fiberglass ladder and pla]orm be used that will cost Rotary Moruya $10,000.

Meanwhile a Very Big vote of thanks to the tenacity of Rotary to con&nue to provide a fes&ve feel to the township of Moruya and to overcome the annual Grinch hurdles placed before them.

Mow and slash long grass now: RFS Eurobodalla Council has partnered with the Rural Fire Service to urge residents and landowners to mow or slash long grass – especially on vacant blocks – 15th to help Vol 16 September 2017reduce the risk of summer grass fires.

Higher than average spring rainfall resulted in rapid grass growth across the shire but it will quickly brown off as hot days increase, creaCng an increased fire risk.

Rural Fire Service Far South Coast manager, Superintendent John Cullen, said grass fires could start easily and spread quickly.

“Grass fires pose a significant risk this fire season, so please make sure you have a cleared around your home or vacant blocks,” he said.

“As the summer progresses it might become too risky to use slashers. You need to prepare well beforehand as leaving it to the last minute is too late.

“It only takes two days of hot, dry and windy weather to cure grass. Make sure you manage your property so you don’t become a fire risk to your community.”

The RFS advises five simple steps to prepare a property for bushfires: 1. Trim overhanging trees and shrubs to stop the spread of fire.

2. Mow grass and remove the cuWngs, have a cleared area around your home.

3. Remove material that can burn, like wood piles and furniture.

4. Clear debris from your guRers to stop embers causing a fire.

5. Prepare a sturdy hose or hoses that can reach around your home and make sure you’ve got a reliable source of water.

Mr Cullen also urged residents to make a bushfire survival plan.

“Plan what you will do if there’s a bush or grass fire near you, please discuss with your family what your acCons will be, and stay informed,” he said.

Council will be targeCng non-resident ratepayers so they’re reminded of their responsibiliCes, too. Eurobodalla Council’s LEMO Warren Sharpe urged the community – including nonresident ratepayers – to work together.

“Planning and being prepared for disasters is a shared responsibility and we can all help,” he said.

“We already know there is a heightened level of anxiety within our community following last year’s summer. If we all prepare our properCes well, especially vacant blocks, this will reduce help reduce the fire risk and help the mental wellbeing of our community. ChaWng with our neighbours about our bushfire survival plans, especially the elderly, is also a great thing to do, so we can be ready help each other in Cmes of need.”

“Many people don’t realise there are wetlands surrounding Mackay Park, just west of the Princes Highway,” she said.

“They support significant mangrove and saltmarsh communiCes and are perfect habitat for fish, birds and crabs. They also trap a lot of liRer from the highway and town before it enters the Clyde River.

“ADCO has been fantasCc in helping us restore this area, and we’re very appreciaCve of the effort everyone put in on Tuesday, especially those who travelled from afar just to help out.”

ADCO senior project manager Nick Lyons said the work was part of ADCOmmunity Day – an annual event in which the company’s NSW staff parCcipate in community-based projects.

“Rather than have a funcCon or spend a day in the office doing paperwork, ADCO gives us the opportunity to get out there and lend a hand,” he said.

“Our team wanted to do a project that helped the local environment and the Batemans Bay community.”

Meanwhile, construcCon of the new centre is on schedule. ExcavaCon for the 25-metre pool and balance tanks is complete, while the concrete piling is more than 50 per cent complete. Next up will be pouring the concrete bases for the pool and balance tanks.

The first duck across the finishing line wins $1,000; the last duck $100. Proceeds will go towards local chariCes including Narooma Surf Club who help us collect the ducks and to Bermagui CRABS (Cancer Research Advocate Bikers) who lend us the ducks.

Here is a chance to say so Once the new four lane bridge is build that connects with the four lane Highway past the Botanic Gardens the enCre show will come to a grinding halt in Mogo as the traffic for the next decade or two merge at the pinch point of Mogo shops and the narrow Mogo bridge right next to the Mogo Public School.

The expected increases in traffic over the coming years will include B-Doubles, adding to the already marked increases in semi-trailers bringing supplies or carCng logs. With the reality of high visitaCon this summer to our two bustling villages of Bodalla and Mogo the issue of pedestrian safety is once again at the forefront of concerns held by residents and businesses.

While the RMS conCnues to sit on its hands in addressing the thunderdome of Bodalla where pedestrians conCnue to place their life in their hands in aRempCng to cross from one side of the highway to the other it appears that pressure from the Mogo Business Chamber and social outcry may have encouraged Transport for NSW to explore ways to help make Mogo a safer place for pedestrians. Youth Film Workshops a big success A group of keen young filmmakers took part in Far South Film’s youth workshops between 14 November and 5 Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th,and 2017Moruya.

Vol 48 27th 2018 December 111April July in 12th Bega 2019 The digital filmmaking workshops gave young people an opportunity for hands-on intensive learning under the instruction of experienced filmmakers, Rima Bos in Moruya and Lis Shelley and Jared Auer in Bega, using new technologies and devices. Students learnt the basics of storytelling and screenwriting, pre production and planning, composition and shooting, animation, editing techniques and strategies for creating short films.

The workshops were the perfect place for students to get a feel of what it takes to create short films that can be entered into film festivals. "Everyone starts somewhere and short films are a great way to learn the basics, whether you're doing a film for your family, a project for school or want to get into a tertiary level film school".

Students learn filmmaking with Rima Bos from Far

Far South Film's workshops give our regional kids a level of South Film in Moruya in December confidence and experience that they might otherwise have to travel to the city to get. This project is supported by Arts NSW’s Country Arts Support Program, a devolved funding program administered by the Regional Arts NSW and South East Arts on behalf of the NSW Government. The Regional Arts Fund is an Australian Government initiative that supports sustainable and cultural development in regional, remote and very remote Australia.

Far South Film have a strong commitment to supporting young people to learn all aspects of filmmaking. The association is planning to run more open, professional and youth workshops in the region in the lead up to its Far South Film Festival in August 2021.

Next morning that pillowslip was bursting. I wasn’t allowed to open the presents till Mum and Dad woke up. They took forever so I finally I dragged it into their big bedroom.

Dad was home on leave. He was tired from fighting the war, but Mum was just as thrilled as me by the toy with tiny ball bearings that you tipped slightly so they stopped in the eyes of a clown’s face; and a cowboy hat, a cap gun in a holster like Hopalong Cassidy’s and best of all, a wooden cricket set!

‘You must have been a very good boy,’ Mum said, ‘helping with the dishes and everything.’ ‘You bet,’ I said. I really must have been, even if I did whinge a bit at the time.

Graham Strachan up the street said Santa wasn’t true. I didn’t believe him. But next year I learned he was right.

Santa didn’t drink beer, only a real person did that and made loud burping sounds.

For a while I pretended, especially when my little brother came along. The saving grace was Sunday School where I learned that Christmas was Jesus’s birthday so we were celebrating by giving each other presents. I believed that till I was about thirteen. But that whole thing about God giving his only begotten son so everyone who followed the Apostle’s Creed could live forever when they died wasn’t making a lot of sense. What about all the poor people who lived before Jesus turned up? Then Mum died of cancer and that was the end of God for me. And Christmas pretty much went with it.

A few years later I married a lovely girl from the Riverina. Nothing gave her more pleasure than choosing Christmas presents for our families and friends, especially the children who kept popping up. I was happy for her but I couldn’t share her emotional commitment. It really felt like we were pawns in a big commercial extravaganza. And I didn’t enjoy the way some kids fell upon all that ‘stuff’. There were also times when the liberal doses of ‘Christmas cheer’ suddenly dragged ancient resentments over the groaning table of gluttony.

But then came 2020, the year that brought us the horrors of raging bushfires, killer smoke and deadly Covid 19, the forerunners of a world where the climate is racing out of control, where every month a new disaster threatens and our hold on the life we have known becomes ever more tenuous.

So far, we’ve survived. And while the way ahead is frightening, we know in our hearts that we and our loved ones will get through it only if we do what 2020 has taught us.

Perhaps this Christmas is the perfect time for us to come together and rekindle that collective spirit that fought the fires, tended the sick and the dying, and made common cause in the fight against Covid-19. Perhaps then, all those terrible, lonely sacrifices would not have been made in vain; and Christmas will at last find a genuine reason for being.

Some groups will close and certainly some groups’ services will be reduced because of the forced relocaCon. It will cause further divisions and stress our social cohesion yet again: bats, fires, floods, Covid, Mpark causing such stress and debt, and now our community Centre taken from the volunteer groups who have so Crelessly worked to support our community through these disasters and in an ongoing loaded demographic. Will it best serve the place of SEARMS in the community, do you think?

Demen&a Support Group in Moruya The Beagle Editor, When services are short on the ground, we just have to get on and do our own thing. I am referring to services for people struggling with demenCa and their carers. Because of Covid 19, the support groups in Eurobodalla had to be suspended and have only recently recommenced.

DemenCa Australia has a Support Worker, who is only available in Eurobodalla two days a fortnight. During that Cme, he organised a Support Group in Batemans Bay. There was a Support Group in Moruya originally. However it has been assessed that the need is greater in Batemans Bay. I would like to start an informal get-together in Moruya, iniCally on a monthly basis but with the possibility that it would become fortnightly. I have never run a group like this. However, I would like something to be established before I become desperately in need of support from people who really understand what living with a partner/parent/sibling with demenCa is like.

So if anyone is are interested, please call me on 0427 498 918 for a chat.

I am also interested in making contact with any of the volunteers who were working with the original Moruya Support Group and who would like to be involved again. Hopefully, together, we can get something off the ground early in 2021.

My Bushfire recovery at 11 months by Lindsay Gates I wrote an update about my recovery at about 7 months. I was receiving counselling for grief and trauma, and I was upset about the brutal local real estate market. The real estate market is sCll brutal, and I have Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, therapy.

2017 Vol 48 2018 111April July 27th 12th 2019 “graduated” from I see mulCtudes of news reports on TV about the aIermath of the bushfires, and it seems obvious that many bushfire survivors are feeling abandoned and forgoRen. It is clear that firefighCng resources are not appearing on our doorsteps. I am a Yank, and I am proud of the way Australia has knocked back the covid disease, but it should not be a shroud for bushfire recovery. As vicCms of the Black Summer Fires, I feel the resources available to us has been way more than to fire vicCms past, and probably future. We benefited financially from a worldwide response. It is now up to the government to step up, thank god that grassroots folks and communiCes are trying to fill in the gaps while they get lost in their red tape.

My husband and I have been well taken care of as the result of losing our home. We were well insured with NRMA, and we received all the handouts from the Red Cross, Salvos and Vinnies. We are grateful for the help from Katy at Service NSW who applied to Givit for us and provided us with a new vacuum and an outdoor table from Bunnings that we are using inside our rental as a dining room table. We aRended the Tea and Talk meeCngs that were sponsored by the Red Cross, Service NSW, Eurobodalla Bushfire Recovery, DPI Rural Recovery Team, Salvos, Anglicare, and Catholic Care. That was an amazing team of hard workers trying to make life easier for us. Yet despite all the good help, losing our home has been hard. We had to learn how to be resilient when we didn’t want to be. We had no comfortable nest of our own to ride out lockdown in. We lost our first rental aIer 8 months because the owners wanted it back for the holidays, and finding a new rental was HARD. When we started looking in August, there were 2 choices in the Moruya area. Luckily we got one of them. I hear horror stories of folks who can’t find a rental around Eurobodalla. I believe the scarcity is due to the bushfire, bridge building and folks wanCng to rent out their air bnbs to covid starved holiday travelers for large sums of money. My heart goes out to those bushfire vicCms who are worrying about where they are going to live.

Thankfully we have been given our miracle, and we have found a new home aIer almost a year of desperate searching on All Homes. real terror and panic that we would never find anything due to the compeCCve nature of the market right now, then I had to have a talk with myself (and my counsellor) about learning not to live in fear. Faith and trust that our outcome could be a good one was hard, but really, that is the only good choice. I learned that culCvaCng compassion for myself was paramount, and if that meant I had to cry, so be it. I have kept myself out in nature by going on walks and growing veggies in pots that I can move with me. I have sung the song Amazing Grace countless Cmes as I look out to sea on the beach. Those liRle habits have eased me though the tough Cmes. It seems far beRer to do lots of liRle things to stay sane and centered than to try and push through hard and fast and live in fear. It is challenging to be at the mercy of uncertainty, yet it is a culCvator of courage. I never contemplated wriCng a leRer to the editor pre-fire, now I have wriRen several. I just couldn’t not share my feelings, an interesCng benefit to trauma!

To all my fellow bushfire survivors, I wish you only the best and am wishing for more miracles to be spread around the Eurobodalla Shire in 2021. I am certain that you all have grown in the courage and resiliency department.

Thomas, who is running a eucalyptus oil distillery at Wamban, and a gentleman who more15th than an ordinary interest in such matters, has just returned from Nerrigundah, where he Vol 16takes September 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 111April Julywith 12th 2018 2019 consulted many of those in the same line of business, with whom he is intimately acquainted, informs us that he will shortly call a public meeting at Nerrigundah for the purpose of forming a Eucalyptus Oil Distilling Union, with a view of getting prices fixed, prevent exploitation and otherwise protect the industry.

The time has arrived when all those engaged in an important new industry, such as the eucalyptus oil extracting one undoubtedly is, must bestir themselves in their own interest and protection, or otherwise go to the wall. Nerrigundahites would do well to watch these columns for the announcement of the public meeting, which will shortly appear and allow nothing to prevent their being present, as it is a matter in which all are vitally interested.

Reading The Beagle Editor, When services are short on the ground, we just have to get on and do our own thing. I am referring to services for people struggling with demenCa and their carers.

Because of Covid 19, the support groups in Eurobodalla had to be suspended and have only recently Vol 16 September 15th 2017 recommenced.

DemenCa 28 December 7th, 2017 Australia has a Support Worker, who is only available in Eurobodalla two days a Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 fortnight. During that Cme, he organised a Support Group in Batemans Bay. There was a Support Group in Moruya originally. However it has been assessed that the need is greater in Batemans Bay. I would like to start an informal get-together in Moruya, iniCally on a monthly basis but with the possibility that it would become fortnightly. I have never run a group like this.

However, I would like something to be established before I become desperately in need of support from people who really understand what living with a partner/parent/sibling with demenCa is like.

So if anyone is are interested, please call me on 0427 498 918 for a chat. I am also interested in making contact with any of the volunteers who were working with the original Moruya Support Group and who would like to be involved again.

Hopefully, together, we can get something off the ground early in 2021.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION AT ‘THE BAS’ - UNTOLD EUROBODALLA by Lee Grant and Amadis Lacheta What makes where we live special, and why have people chosen to seRle here?

What creates culture in a place and how does our community contribute to and celebrate that unique culture?

ArCsts and Eurobodalla residents, Lee Grant and Amadis Lacheta have sought to find answers to these quesCons through their project, Untold Eurobodalla.

Ms Lacheta remarks: “Robust regional communiCes are diverse, creaCve and responsive to change. The people living in them are mulC-faceted and oIen have numerous talents and means of expressing those giIs that make them interesCng on a personal and collecCve level”.

Untold Eurobodalla takes a lateral approach to examining the mulCtude of ways that local residents contribute to the place they call home and shares their disCncCve stories through photography, film and the wriRen word.

At a Cme of significant challenge for many people in the aIermath of the bushfires, and with the ongoing renegoCaCon of life due to COVID-19, reminding ourselves of what really maRers, cherishing what we have and building on our strengths are vital pathways to the future.

About the Ar&sts: Lee is a photographic arCst based on the South Coast of NSW. She has a Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology) and a Master of Philosophy (Visual Arts) from the Australian NaConal University. She works on commissions and long form independent and collaboraCve projects dealing with themes of community, idenCty and belonging and how landscape (both natural and inhabited) relates to these concepts. Working across mediums, Lee’s pracCce combines photography, video, sound and text in projects that are oIen underpinned with insCtuConal and found archives.

Amadis has worked for the past 25 years across the arts, sustainability, government, business and community sectors in NSW, around Australia and overseas. She has a Bachelor of Music in composiCon and piano from the University of Adelaide, and strongly values how the arts can significantly contribute to the wellbeing of communiCes within and beyond the confines of professional arts pracCce. As a composer, writer, gardener and home builder she takes a transdisciplinary and holisCc approach to creaCvity. She has wriRen for Green Magazine, Earth Garden and other publicaCons on the topics of sustainable gardening, architecture, food producCon and renewable energy. Her two great loves are nature and culture, and she is moCvated by the importance of recognising our place within the interconnected web of life.

Congo Crafts, is holding its 35th Annual Exhibition, showcasing a diverse range of functional and decorative stoneware ceramics and Volpaintings 16 September 15th 2017 on canvas.

and has been continuously exhibiting works ever since. All the ceramics and paintings have been created by Jim Simms in his Congo studio, and he has been working in the arts for over forty years.

Strongly influenced by Japanese, Korean and Chinese ceramics, Jim continues to produce a range of beautiful pieces, and is noted for the quality of his glazes.

Each year he experiments with new matt and gloss finishes, resulting in a varied and stunning palette of rich and more subtle colourings. Each wood-fired piece is uniquely burnished by the ash and flames of the firing.

Jim has many happy local, national and international clients who have admired and collected his work over a number of years.

Broulee Runners Wed Dec 9th 2020 This evening we had 33 results presented and there were 3 personal Vol 16 September 15th 2017 best Cmes. Tino 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 LopresC once again impressed with an excellent Cme in the 3.5 kilometres with an improvement of 10 seconds. Max Hadley and Bernie Lambert both improved by 11 seconds in the 5 kilometres. Victor Violante, in his first run with the group in the 5 kilometres recorded an outstanding Cme of 19.35. His family consisCng of Alex, CharloRe and SebasCan submiRed Cmes in 2 kilometres.

The stars of the night were Nev Madden and Morgan PeWt. Nev has recorded 200 runs and Morgan 100 runs. Both carrying injuries managed the 2 kilometres distance. The stewards granted this special dispensaCon because of their long service.

Nev first run was on 10 September 2008 and he was a major contributor in keeping the run going when numbers were extremely low, and it looked like petering out. He has been instrumental in fostering distance running in the district by organising a Sunday running group. He has also assisted in parkrun and in liRle athletes. He is well respected in the running scene both in Canberra and in the coast.

Tuross Head golfers enjoy relaxed golf rules The monthly medal stroke format of golf has been reinstated at Tuross Head.

This popular monthly and annual medal compeCCon was played by club golfers this week and despite extreme windy condiCons the format was a welcome return to some degree of normality.

Played over three grades the winner of A division was John Phyland with a score of 66 neR strokes. Ken Brown was a close second with 67 strokes and Paul Scholze third with 70.

Frank Pomfret was the best of the B grade division with 68 strokes, Wayne Fullerton scored 71 strokes followed by Peter Hogan with 72.

Derek Hoare won C division with 69 ahead of Greg Ware 72 and Paul Israel with 76 strokes.

Nearest the pins were won by Rodger Chappel on the 4th hole with a close 1.35 m.

John Phyland won the 6th hole with 8.20 m and Steve Walker the 7th with 5.80 m.

Thursday’s medley stableford compeCCon was won by Graham Moore with 41 strokes ahead of Desmon Jackson and Joel Hilliard who both scored 38 points.

Neil Mather and David Schmid had cards of 38 points.

with an Irish 4BBB nine-hole novelty event. The ‘novelty’ was that each player was only allowed three clubs plus a puRer in their bag. SelecCon of clubs was paramount as was wishful thinking that bunkers didn’t come into play! Being the fesCve season, the Ladies were encouraged to dress up in fun Christmassy themes. Santa hats, Cnkling bells, dangly earrings and abundant sequins and gliRer doRed their ou]its. John Cox Beats Home Big Field at Tuross Vets Golf Yet another large field of veteran golfers registered for the Tuross Head Veterans Single Stableford event on Wednesday 9 December 2020. Winner on the day was John Cox from runner up Greg Thornton, both players recording impressive scores of 23 points. Third place went to Shirley Quinlan on count back from Julie Barningham with both ladies scoring 22.

Minor prizes were awarded to Rob Nash with 22, Ted Quinlan, Paul Green, Jennifer Gray and AnneRe Manton with 21, Len Rogers and Neil Mather on 20, Herb Muriwai, Ross MacAlpine, Henry Anderson, Margaret Downey, Paul Coffey and Ron Hanlon on 19, Solveig Olsson, Greg Bush, Bruce Ware, Rick Brake and Steve Johnston on 17, and finally Tony Crook, Greg Smith and Ray Downey on 17. The winds have played havoc with the fisher folks being able to Vol September 2017 get16out for this15th week.

For those that have got out, good 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 numbers of flathead, bream and the odd whiCng have managed to find a place in the boRom of the landing net. I personally had a rather substanCal whiCng follow my 120mm Bassday Suga pen surface lure last weekend in behind hole in the wall while I was trying to find somewhere out of the wind.

Unfortunately the fish didn’t commit, and I had yet another donut session.

Down around the airport flats, reasonable numbers of flathead and the odd bream and whiCng have been encountered. The holes in front of the hospital have been holding the odd Bream, Luderick and Flathead.

The flats under the bridge conCnue to produce good numbers of Flathead as well. The Cdes are lining up for perfectly to chase a few fish off of the bridge itself later in the evenings this weekend.

Tuross river.

In around four ways, graham reports good numbers of Flathead, Bream and WhiCng all on surface lures yesterday morning. While the land based guys are sCll geWng into a few fish between the boat ramp and the boat sheds. The southern, Potato Point flats, conCnue to fish well as well. While those dropping crab pots are sCll finding Mud crabs in the deeper holes throughout the system.

Rock and Beach.

The beaches this week are conCnuing to hold good numbers of salmon, trying to get a window where the winds don’t play havoc, has been the hard part of that equaCon this week.

Offshore.

The Flathead and Snapper are conCnuing to provide fun and a feed for the guys geWng out into the 3040m mark of water depth. I haven’t heard of any Kingfish locally, but they can’t be far off. Nowra has them, Narooma has them....won’t be long.

With the upcoming dark next Tuesday, the prawns have started to run. All of the local lakes will hold prawns, but Brou Lake down south has been the standout this week. Durras Lake should also have good prawns as it also opened at the same Cme that Brou did. Coila is worth a go also.

We have a good range of Prawning equipment, from lights to drag nets, and scoop nets as well as buckets to hold your catch.

Come in and have a look.

The Christmas catalogue is sCll running, some stock is starCng to get low, but where possible we have reorders in to top those levels back up.
