Council intends to sell off two of its three public toilets in Batemans Bay CBD that might leave locals and visitors caught short. Batemans Bay Community Centre toilet is already closed and the InformaCon Centre toilet will follow in February 2021, once the faciliCes are private control or ownership. This will leave the only remaining Public Toilet opCon for visitors and locals as the foreshore toilet on Clyde Street.

The sign above at the Batemans Bay Community Centre now directs the public to the next closest Public Toilet being the Visitor InformaCon Centre.

In readiness for the inevitable backlash from the community who expect, at least, that a council delivers public toilets, the councillors have been workshopping their response that the Batemans Bay CBD offers access to toilets at Woolworths, The Bayview Hotel, KFC, The Village Centre, Mariners Hotel, McDonalds and the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club suggesCng that in fact there are eleven toilets that locals and visitors can use including Albert Ryan Park along Beach Road .

Of interest the Clyde Foreshore toilets will also come before Council next week, as part of the Batemans Bay Foreshore Improvement report, with a recommendaCon to consider the opCon of relocaCng the toilets to open up the space currently occupied by the toilet block. No locaCon has been suggested.

Council has, for many years, moved to raConalise the number of toilets it has to reduce maintenance costs.

With the suggesCon of one councillor that the public are well catered for with privately owned toilets and that this workshopped response is most likely forthcoming next week when the issue is raised it appears that Council might be looking a liEle wider on its Private/Public partnerships.

Bridge Over Clyde River At Nelligen On The Way The new bridge over the Clyde River at Nelligen is one step closer,15th with2017 contractor Seymour Whyte Vol 16 September 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 ConstrucCons to start work early next year.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the NSW Government has commiEed $148 million for construcCon of the bridge, which will provide safer and more reliable journeys on the Kings Highway at Nelligen.

“Following improvements made to the detailed design by Transport for NSW, the construcCon tender has been awarded to Seymour Whyte ConstrucCons,” Mr Toole said.

“Site establishment and major construcCon is expected to start early next year with the new bridge built upstream of the exisCng bridge.”

Member for Bega Andrew Constance said the new bridge will have a 100-year bridge life and the project will provide improved urban design around the foreshore.

“This new bridge will see wider lanes and shoulders, an improved curve on the eastern side of the bridge, and safety barriers between the road and footpath,” Mr Constance said.

“Early work, including vegetaCon removal and the delivery of earth fill has already been completed along with uClity relocaCon and now we are pushing on with construcCon.” The new bridge is expected to be open to traffic by late 2023, weather permiMng. Work to remove the exisCng bridge will be carried out once the new bridge is complete and open to traffic.

The Liberty Road House in Moruya turns One this week.

And what a year it has been. First the bushfires, followed by the empCness of the streets devoid of summer trade that morphed into Covid that saw the State in a travel lockdown. But the team at Liberty pressed on with their new enterprise and have seEled into the Moruya community as they set out to do when they opened the new roadhouse just north of the Moruya Bridge.

The Beagle caught up with owners, Swaroop and Sue, to learn more of the vision the owners had of the roadhouse.

"We didn't want to just sell petrol. We knew that Moruya deserved a more compeCCve market and, thanks to the wide support of our customers, we have been able to deliver the prices we offer. But we wanted to be more than that. We have seen many road houses across Australia and recognised the uniform need to be accessible to the essenCal needs of travellers. If this means trading unCl midnight in summer to provide that service then that is what we must do.

"But people don't just need petrol. They need food. And they want food from breakfast to well past dinner Cme. We have so many trades people come in first thing in the morning to fill up for the day. They pick up breakfast and a coffee and are ready for the day. Our shop stocks bait and tackle and it is not unusual to have visitors call in on their way to an early morning fish. We are learning more of their needs and improving our stocks all the Cme. "you would be surprised how busy we are some days from 5am opening.

"While our menu caters for all the typical road house favourites we have added to it our Indian takeaway opCons including authenCc Hyderabadi chicken biryani . The decision to add Indian food to the menu was driven by our customers asking if we could provide a range of their favourites. The family members come from Hyderabad which is known the world over for its Biriyani. Our Biriyani is an enjoyable but complex a dish to make for the cafe. We also have a range of other curry favourites as takeaways that our many customers enjoy.

"It gives us a sense of pride to be able to offer Indian cuisine that celebrates our heritage. The feedback has been wonderful. It is also our pleasure to be able to offer hot food opCons to our customers aKer 8pm when everything else is usually closed. Everybody comes in. We have nurses, truck drivers, mums and dads with children in pajamas. It is a family atmosphere that we really enjoy. The warmth of the local community has also helped us cope with 2020 that has been hard for so many we meet.

"To celebrate our One Year anniversary on December 4th and 5th we will be giving all our meal customers a Ccket to be in the draw for vouchers".

Keen 2021 Council trainees start early Eight trainees and one apprenCce have upped-tools to make an early start with Eurobodalla Council this week.

Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 111April July 12th 2018 2019 General manager Catherine Dale welcomed some of the 2021 cohort of trainees and apprenCces on

Monday 30 November and urged them to take full advantage of their Cme with Council.

“Our trainees will be here for 12 months and will qualify for a CerCficate III in Business AdministraCon while gaining valuable experience, training in areas as diverse as children’s services, finance, or property,” Dr Dale said.

“We’ve just the one apprenCce starCng now, with the rest of the intake to begin, as usual, in February 2021.”

Dr Dale said she enjoyed following the progress of recruits as they acquired skills for the future.

“The program has been running for well over a decade now, taking in 99 trainees, cadets and apprenCces,” Dr Dale said.

“It’s parCcularly heartening to see many of them choosing to stay on with Council. Even since 2016, we’ve had 39 permanent posiCons filled by graduates of this program,” Dr Dale said.

“It’s a real opportunity for people of any age to gain a qualificaCon while earning and income in a professional work environment. We welcome the fresh perspecCves they bring.”

Bushfire Survivors Meet With David Li8leproud To Call For Ac1on On Royal Commission Vol 16 September 15th 2017

BUSHFIRE 28 December 7th, 2017FOR CLIMATE ACTION Vol 48 27th 111April JulySURVIVORS 12th 2018 2019 (BSCA) has met with Deputy Leader of the NaConal Party of Australia and Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David LiEleproud to call for the government to implement all recommendaCons made in the Bushfire Royal Commission’s final report.

Jo Dodds, BSCA President, said the meeCng was a posiCve step towards bridging poliCcal divides, and that bushfire survivors want to see immediate acCon from the Federal Government on both the Bushfire Royal Commission’s recommendaCons and climate change.

“Broadly, our values and goals were well-aligned. We are both concerned that regional communiCes are bearing the brunt of climate change events, such as bushfires, and are paying a very high price for it,” said Ms Dodds.

“Minister LiEleproud and I agreed that it will be criCcal for all levels of government and community to work together towards the goal of reducing bushfire risks.”

BSCA wants to see all 80 recommendaCons made by the Bushfire Royal Commission implemented, in parCcular recommendaCon 3.5 that calls for establishment of an enCty focused on longterm disaster risk reducCon to enhance Australia’s natural disaster resilience and recovery.

Ms Dodds said it was heartening that Minister LiEleproud is engaging with BSCA and its members, is keen to see acCon taken on all recommendaCons, and that 3.5 should be implemented by July 2021.

“We both agree that acCon on all recommendaCons is criCcal, and that the process should be non-parCsan and fairly handled,” Ms Dodds said.

“We will conCnue to watch and monitor the government to make sure it delivers on its promises in the coming months.”

BSCA Member Jack Egan, who lost his North Rosedale on New Years Eve, also aEended the meeCng and spoke about recovery resources needing to be distributed according to need, not just the squeakiest wheels.

“The Royal Commission’s findings clearly state that Australia’s prosperity and security depends on our ability to anCcipate, manage and prevent the economic, social and environmental impacts of climate change,” Ms Dodds said.

“Reaching net-zero emissions as soon as possible is in the interests of both our rural and urban communiCes.”

Eurobodalla Council’s free bush-friendly garden program offers a home visit from a member of Council's sustainability team, who can help residents idenCfy plants, suggest appropriate naCves, provide advice on weeds and give great general Cps on making gardens more water-wise.

Advice is tailored to residents’ needs and interests, such as wanCng more colour, aEracCng frogs or birds, or creaCng a low-maintenance garden.

Council’s natural resource officer Courtney Fink-Downes said the visits suited anyone who had an established garden, or was creaCng a new one.

“Bush-friendly gardens feature plants suited to our local soil and climate, so they tend to grow beEer and require less water and maintenance,” she said.

“That doesn’t mean they need to look boring – bush-friendly gardens can provide flowers all year round and come in all shapes and sizes.

“They can also aEract some lovely and colourful visitors and provide much-needed food for birds, buEerflies, lizards and frogs.

“By making your garden more bush friendly you’re supporCng the local environment by using less water and removing problem plants that can become weeds, as well as providing food and shelter for our shire’s smallest residents. Watching birds feeding on flowers in your own garden is nice too.”

Council’s bush-friendly garden visit includes a voucher for the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden nursery, and informaCon about weeds and good alternaCves.

Changed traffic condi1ons on the Princes Highway at Cobargo Motorists are advised of changed traffic condiCons from Tuesday on the Princes Highway at either side of the Cobargo town ship for safety upgrade work.

This work will include installing signs and carrying out pavement marking at the entry points to the Cobargo town ship where the speed limit changes from 100 km/h to 50 km/h to promote beEer compliance and safety.

Work will be carried out from 7am to 5pm from Tuesday 8 to Thursday 10 December.

For the safety of workers and motorists lane closures, traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place during this Cme. Motorists are advised to drive to the condiCons and follow the direcCons of signs and traffic control.

Ranger patrols increase on local beaches Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Vol 28 December 7th, 2017

Vol 48 2018 111April July 27th 12th 2019 rangers are stepping up patrols in preparaCon Eurobodalla Council for a busy summer.

Of parCcular focus will be dog Cmeshare areas, where dogs are now no longer allowed between 9am and 5pm, and areas where dogs are prohibited.

Council’s environmental health and compliance coordinator Nathan Ladmore said Council had already received complaints from residents concerned about people flouCng the rules since Cmeshare arrangements resumed in November.

“Concerns have been raised about Candlagan Creek, Shark Bay and Tomakin Cove Beach where dogs are prohibited, as well as Mystery Bay Beach, which is Cmeshare,” he said.

“We’ll be raising awareness to ensure all dog owners know the rules, which are there so everyone can enjoy our public areas,” Mr Ladmore said.

“The onus is on dog owners to control and confine their animals, and where dog owners disobey the regulaCons they face being fined.”

One lane will be closed under a stop/slow arrangement for road resurfacing, to provide an improved bridge approach for motorists.

That Was the Year That Was. Eurobodalla Photographic Club The November meeCng of the Eurobodalla Photographic Club wrapped up the clubs acCviCes for 2020 with our Image of the15th Year compeCCon. For this compeCCon entries that have previously won awards throughout Vol 16 September 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 the year together with completely new images are judged for prizes including, highly commended, third, second and “The Image of the Year” generously sponsored by the Batemans Bay PerFex Group Inc. The criCque and judging of 29 images was undertaken remotely by Len Metcalf a renowned photographer and educator (hEps://www.lenmetcalf.com ). Len provided a professional insight into our images and helpful advise to the parCcipaCng photographers.

In October 2021 Len will be joining us in person for a one day workshop at the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens funcCon center, followed by a early morning photo shoot the next day.

Grace Paleg presented the Image of the Year prizes on behalf of the PerFex Group, together with the 2020 perpetual trophies. Our grateful thanks to Grace and the PerFex Group ( hEp://www.perfex.org.au ).

As part of our final meeCng for the year Brian and Shirley Gunter presented a tutorial on Astro photography complete with a showing of their fascinaCng images of the heavens including the milky way and deep space galaxies. Rob Geraghty followed this with a curated exhibiCon and discussion of member photos that were taken on a recent trip to Montague Island.

reading Gadfly 145 By Robert Macklin Most of us, I’m guessing, are bewildered by the really angry attitude of the Chinese toward the Morrison Government. And if our perception is confined to the 24-hour news cycle Vol 16 Septemberunderstandable.

In this light, it began with Morrison’s call for an investigation into the genesis of the coronavirus in Wuhan, and the following tit-for-tat powered the descent of relations until suddenly our entire trade with China is under threat. And it’s basically the Chinese government’s fault because after all, they’re communists.

There is, however, a larger context, part historical, part contemporary. The historical touches upon the appalling misreading by Cabinet Minister Alan Tudge who declared this week that, ‘We have been welcoming Chinese migrants for more than 200 years.’

Some welcome.

Sure, it began about 200 years ago when John Macarthur, the so-called ‘father’ of the Australian wool industry, had at least three ‘indentured’ Chinese labourers on his property in the 1820s. Then as the British Parliament outlawed the slave trade in 1833, his fellow graziers realised that free convict labour was next in line and followed his example.

By 1848, I discovered in the research for my Dragon and Kangaroo (Hachette 2017) they had imported indentured ‘coolies’ because of their ‘untiring industry, frugality and perseverance’ which were ‘the inherited instincts of their race.’ Three years later came the goldrush in Victoria then NSW. Prospectors, from around the world - including a Chinese minority – descended on Australia. The resulting racist attacks on the Chinese would culminate in the White Australia Policy that remained in force until 1975.

Meantime, the British were fighting the Opium Wars to open China’s ports to the mass importation of the drug from their Indian poppy fields. British ‘gunboat diplomacy’ brought Hong Kong and trading rights to vast areas of the Yangtse to the British crown – the same crown, incidentally, that Australia happily honours today as its Head of State.

So let’s say China wanted to make an example of its tough bargaining posture at a time when a new American President is about to take the reins. Indeed, Joe Biden told the New York Times his week that ‘the best China strategy, I think, is one which gets every one of our allies on the same page. [That] is going to be a major priority for me in the opening weeks of my presidency.’ Then who better to dangle overboard the ship of state than a favourite ally with a Prime Minister who still believes (along with miracles) that Australia’s China policy is best encapsulated in Tony Abbott’s three-word slogan: ‘fear and greed’.

The current emperor of the Communist Dynasty, Xi Jinping, has quietly visited all Australian states and territories but Tasmania. He knows the country well. His 2014 address to the Australian Parliament was mostly diplomatic verbiage.

But towards the end, he asked, ‘What will China be like when it grows in strength?’ His answer: ‘China is a large country of 1.3 billion people. It is like the big guy in the crowd. Others naturally wonder how the big guy will move and act.’

Most Australians have heard of the Boer War and of Harry 'Breaker' Morant, a figure who rivals Ned Kelly as an archetypal Australian folk hero. But Morant was a complicated man.

Born in England and immigraCng to Queensland in 1883, he established a reputaCon as a rider, polo player and poet who submiEed ballads to The Bulle/n and counted Banjo Paterson as a friend. Travelling on his wits and the goodwill of others, Morant was quick to act when appeals were made for horsemen to serve in the war in South Africa. He joined up, first with the South Australian Mounted Rifles and then with a South African irregular unit, the Bushveldt Carbineers.

The adventure would not go as Breaker planned. In

October 1901 Lieutenant Harry Morant and two other Australians, Lieutenants Peter Handcock and George WiEon, were arrested for the murder of Boer prisoners. Morant and Handcock were court-marCalled and executed in February 1902 as the Boer War was in its closing stages, but the debate over their convicCons conCnues to this day.

With his masterful command of story, Peter FitzSimons takes us to the harsh landscape of southern Africa and into the bloody acCon of war against an unpredictable force using modern commando tacCcs. The truths FitzSimons uncovers about 'the Breaker' and the part he played in the Boer War are astonishing - and finally we will know if the Breaker was a hero, a cad, a scapegoat or a criminal.

100 Years Ago—December 4, 1920 FREEZING WORKS IMPROVEMENT.– Since taking over the lease of the Moruya Freezing Works, Messrs. H. On the expert advice of that keen business gentleman, Mr. Gordon Johnston, who has been appointed General Manager, smoked and kippered fish have been added to the long list of dainties. A fly proof butcher’s room with cement floor is occupied by Mr. H. Sebbens who serves out the prime fresh beef and mutton from the cooling chamber. Already there are six hands employed in the up-to-date concern. Miss Winnie Johnson, holds the position of book-keeper and Mr. Vidler that of engineer.

SOLDIERS’ MEMORIALS.– An occasion of special interest, not only to the Methodist community, but to the citizens as a whole, will present itself on Sunday, 12th Dec., in the afternoon at the local Methodist Church, there will be the unveiling of an Honor Roll, which is Sicilian marble set in marble background, contains the names of Methodist soldiers who responded to the call of Empire. The tablets are of the same material and designed to accord with the others already suspended to the walls of the church. One of the tablets is in memory of Lieut. Leslie Ross, the story of whose tragic death in the endeavour to fly from England to Australia is still fresh in the minds of the people of this country. The other contains the names of Lieut. H.M. and Pte. R.C. Bishop, both of whom forfeited their lives in the cause of the Allies.

BAY-NELLIGEN MAIL.– The Hon. A. Chapman, M.P., has been informed by the Postmaster-General’s Department (under dated 23rd inst.) with reference to the communication received from Messrs. Geo. Lee, T. Richardson, W. Ison and other residents of Nelligen and district regarding the Bateman’s Bay-Nelligen mail service, that the matter of altering the service to start from Nelligen was given full consideration, but in view of the cost being greater than that required for the existing service, and as the present arrangement serves all reasonable requirements a tender has been accepted for the service as now performed.

OPERATION.– Mr. G. H. James received word last week end that Mrs James has been ordered into hospital to have a growth removed from one of her eyes, Mrs James’ many friends in this district will be pleased to hear that the operation was successful and the patient is doing well.

At the conclusion of the speeches, Mrs. W. Thomson and Miss D. Coppin rendered musical items, after which the business of the bazaar began. …. We are informed that the financial result of the Fair will reach about £128, which reflects much credit on the fair secretaries and the energetic band of workers.

28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 2018 Leading our27th convoy from the passenger seat, slumped in my sweat-stained bee suit, I have taken over radio 111April July 12th 2019 duCes; advising local fire brigades and comms of our movements, on the clock, marker to marker, through this closing window opportunity.

“They must’ve water-bombed up here…” My colleague concludes, as we arrive at the apiary. ExpecCng to find nothing but smoke and ashes at the first of several remote bee sites, we were pleasantly surprised to find the majority of the colonies sCll intact and acCve (at the Cme, the RFS could not determine if our hives had been spared by this parCcular bushfire that had swept through hectares of naCve bush in the Monga NaConal Park).

Biblical is the only way I could describe the scene outside the confinements of our ute. As far as the eye could see everything was soot-black and unimaginably bare, parched dry and smoldering. Stands of dead Eucalypt, one aKer the other, in amongst clumps of Tea-tree and Black WaEle, burnt beyond recogniCon. And the smell, you could not escape it if you tried. As if someone had just lit their smoker inside the cab. It was unbearable.

We tune into various weather reports on naConal radio when we can. With the latest update predicCng liEle reprieve on the horizon; extreme temperatures forecasted statewide and changeable winds, which are more than likely to conCnue fanning flames toward the coast. Tonight the remaining beehives will be shiKed further north, a long winded trip to greener pastures.

With no significant rain falling in the south-east for the beEer part of 6 months, the region had been breaking serious dry spell records even before the fire season began. Coupled with the blazes that grew out of Currowan and Badja/Countegany, 2019 was certainly the year from hell for environmentalists, agriculturalists and livestock/property owners alike.

Unlike most of Australia’s vegetaCon, many of the temperate and subalpine species that grow in the southeast evolved in the absence of fire and therefore do not recover aKer being burnt. Several endemic species of Gum, Angophora and some rarer species like the ancient Pinkwood or Eastern Leatherwood can be wiped out completely by one fire.

Not unlike its Tasmanian cousin, the ‘Eastern Leatherwood’ is only known to grow in a select few, elevated pockets of forest on the mainland, (usually forming part of the understory in cool, temperate rainforests) ranging from Bulli Pass in the north to Gulaga (Mount Dromedary) in the South. The Eastern-Leatherwood tree is extremely slow growing, (will not flower unCl ripe old 20-30 years of age) reaching around 15 meters tall, with flowers blooming annually and so intense that it seems like a thick, white veil has been thrown over the forest, while the air is filled with the spicy aroma of its nectar.

Commercial beekeepers transport their hives religiously into the region, from mid to late December through unCl the end of February. And due to the influence of alCtude in the area, some operators will conCnue to shiK their colonies (geographically speaking) from where the warmer, sea-level Leatherwoods first come into flower and relocaCng them to higher ground, as the blossom progresses.

Although the honey derived from the Eastern Leatherwood tree only makes up a fracCon of the state’s honey crop. It’s unique flavour and exclusivity to the region has led to premium pricing in niche markets around the world.

Unfortunately since the fires, this naCve jewel has all but been wiped out, leaving local beekeepers no choice but to shutdown or re-locate stock even further afield. The price of honey is expected to rise exponenCally also, along with the price of a select few fruits and vegetables. A long road ahead beckons for all. beagle weekly : Vol 184 December 4th 2020

UPCOMING EXHIBITION AT ‘THE BAS’ - UNTOLD EUROBODALLA by Lee Grant and Amadis Lacheta What makes where we live special, and why have people chosen to seEle here?

What creates culture in a place and how does our community contribute to and celebrate that unique culture?

ArCsts and Eurobodalla residents, Lee Grant and Amadis Lacheta have sought to find answers to these quesCons through their project, Untold Eurobodalla.

Ms Lacheta remarks: “Robust regional communiCes are diverse, creaCve and responsive to change. The people living in them are mulC-faceted and oKen have numerous talents and means of expressing those giKs that make them interesCng on a personal and collecCve level”.

Untold Eurobodalla takes a lateral approach to examining the mulCtude of ways that local residents contribute to the place they call home and shares their disCncCve stories through photography, film and the wriEen word.

At a Cme of significant challenge for many people in the aKermath of the bushfires, and with the ongoing renegoCaCon of life due to COVID-19, reminding ourselves of what really maEers, cherishing what we have and building on our strengths are vital pathways to the future.

About the Ar1sts: Lee is a photographic arCst based on the South Coast of NSW. She has a Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology) and a Master of Philosophy (Visual Arts) from the Australian NaConal University. She works on commissions and long form independent and collaboraCve projects dealing with themes of community, idenCty and belonging and how landscape (both natural and inhabited) relates to these concepts. Working across mediums, Lee’s pracCce combines photography, video, sound and text in projects that are oKen underpinned with insCtuConal and found archives.

Amadis has worked for the past 25 years across the arts, sustainability, government, business and community sectors in NSW, around Australia and overseas. She has a Bachelor of Music in composiCon and piano from the University of Adelaide, and strongly values how the arts can significantly contribute to the wellbeing of communiCes within and beyond the confines of professional arts pracCce. As a composer, writer, gardener and home builder she takes a transdisciplinary and holisCc approach to creaCvity. She has wriEen for Green Magazine, Earth Garden and other publicaCons on the topics of sustainable gardening, architecture, food producCon and renewable energy. Her two great loves are nature and culture, and she is moCvated by the importance of recognising our place within the interconnected web of life.

arts Well, we had the luck of the Irish to be able to run the 2020 exhibiCon between the fires, floods and Covid. It seemed even more special than ever before, partly because of this, 15th and 2017 just because it was Vol 16 September 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 special; a record number of exhibits of sterling quality, and visitors aplenty, thankful that some sort of normality had returned, who flocked to see the sculptures.

We trust that disasters and crises are over… and that 2021 will be more peaceful. The 2021 exhibiCon however is shaping up to be even more exciCng. Interest from the art community is at an all-Cme high. There is a healthy number of applicaCons from sculptors keen to exhibit next March. Next year there is an opConal ‘theme’ for the exhibiCon which is ‘On the Other Side’. We are anCcipaCng some interesCng and diverse interpretaCons of this idea. We are very lucky indeed to have such a quality exhibiCon to look forward to.

The SCULPTURE Bermagui commiEee is keen to forge ahead. We have some new commiEee members who provide a breath of fresh air and new ideas, and we thank those who have stepped down for all their hard work. There is a special team who are already planning and preparing to make 2021 the best year ever for Volunteers!

This year, we are also rolling out a school’s program. Increasing student parCcipaCon with the exhibiCon in several different ways has long been an ambiCon of the commiEee, and this year it may actually come to fruiCon. Edward Willson’s ‘Fluidity, ’ chosen from the 2020 exhibiCon as the Bermagui Business Award, was recently installed beside the 777 supermarket and narrowly escaped demoliCon aKer a wayward vehicle collided with the walled garden. We are pleased to report that it is undamaged and we thank Rhonda Drakos for hosCng this sculpture. It can be enjoyed by locals and tourists on a daily basis and brings sculpture into our everyday lives.

The CommiEee is commiEed to the goal of one day, developing an extensive and diverse collecCon of quality sculptures permanently installed around Bermagui for locals and visitors to appreciate.

Big news! We have a new venue for the indoor sculptures! The community hall has served faithfully for many years, but an opportunity arose to exhibit in the Surf Club on Horseshoe Bay. This venue with it’s stunning outlook towards mother Gulaga is a remarkable site. The Indoor and Outdoor sculptures are now arranged around the U of Horseshoe Bay, providing a seamless flow of all exhibits which will enhance the overall viewing experience.

All in all, hold on to your hats, folks! The 2021 SCULPTURE Bermagui exhibiCon from 6 – 14 March is shaping up to be unmissable!

Congo Crafts, is holding its 35th Annual Exhibition, showcasing a diverse range of functional and decorative stoneware ceramics and Volpaintings 16 September 15th 2017 on canvas.

and has been continuously exhibiting works ever since. All the ceramics and paintings have been created by Jim Simms in his Congo studio, and he has been working in the arts for over forty years.

Strongly influenced by Japanese, Korean and Chinese ceramics, Jim continues to produce a range of beautiful pieces, and is noted for the quality of his glazes.

Each year he experiments with new matt and gloss finishes, resulting in a varied and stunning palette of rich and more subtle colourings. Each wood-fired piece is uniquely burnished by the ash and flames of the firing.

Jim has many happy local, national and international clients who have admired and collected his work over a number of years.

Broulee Runners Wednesday 2nd Dec The cooler weather was much beEer for the 23 actual runners this The 9 virtual Vol 16 September 15th evening.

2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 runners had the luxury of picking the best condiCons for their run.

Personal best Cmes were recorded by Tom Hofsteede and Richard Scholes.

There were some outstanding achievements by Broulee Runners in trail running. Lauren (pictured) was the first female in the Rocky trails Run at Mogo on 22 November. MaE Lambert and Anthony Miles tackled the Summit Shoalhaven on 28 November in close to 40-degree heat. MaE ran the 23 kilometres and competed the hilly course in the Cme of 2 hours and 21 minutes. Anthony ran the 40 -kilometres course to finish second in his age group in a Cme of 5 hours and 9 seconds.

CATALINA LADIES GOLF – Results 2nd December 2020 Our last Stableford Event for the compeCCon year. Some very good scores but the general consensus by the Ladies is that the “back nine” (holes 10 to 18) won! How many balls do we donate to the water on the 18th? Far too many! Seventy- four ladies competed and congratulaCons to the thirty-five who scored a prize. Results as follows: Division 1 First:

Below Par Scores At Tuross Vets 4 Person Ambrose On was a beauCful Vol what 16 September 15th 2017 morning for golf following days of hot weather, a 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 2018 111April July 27th 12th 2019 strong field of 70 players registered for the Tuross Head Veterans Golf annual 4 Person Ambrose event on 2 December, the game being followed by the Vets Annual General MeeCng. The course was playing well with a number of team scores below par off the sCck. Winners on the day were the team of Ken Brown, Noel Downie together with husband and wife Chris and Ian WraEen with a net score of 25.37.

They were followed home by Les Johanson, Ross Hendy, Steve Collins and Frank Pomfret with 27.25, Ian Miller, Ann Challender, Derek Hoare and Peg NeveE on 27.87, and Julie Barningham, Warren Hodder and Steve Gardner on 28.5 on count back.

The only minor prize awarded went to the team of Peter Coffey, Peter Frost, Lance Shadbolt and Rob Nash, the count back losers also on 28.5.

JeaneEe Miller, Mike Birks, Herb Muriwai and Peter McRae struggled on the day and were the event's Bradman award winners.

Moruya Ladies Golf Results Wednesday, 2nd December Moruya Lady Golfer’s played the 6th and final Hamper Stableford Round on Wednesday with several of the 32 player’s who presented submiMng their best scores of the year.

ChrisCne Edwards had a magnificent game and was the well deserved winner for Division 1 scoring a outstanding 45 neE. R/U Dee Meek also played superbly scoring a most enviable 41 neE on C/B. One to be watched and also on her game, Cindy Becker took out 1st place in Division 2 with a very respectable 40 neE, whilst R/U Noelene Levi surpassed herself achieving a very acceptable 37 neE on C/B.

With the water quality vastly improved this week, the fishing has ramped up throughout the system. I fished for bass well Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 and the water up there is running upstream last 2018 weekend, Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2019 clean and clear.

This is has reflected in the reports I have been geMng throughout the week. With flathead being the main species reported this week. SoK plasCcs and hard body lures for the guys willing to get out and walk the flats on a run out Cde have worked well. Remember that flathead will usually have their nose into the current, waiCng to ambush bait coming to them. So cast upstream and work your lures or baits with the current to increase your chances of finding a feed of flathead. This is the same for the boat fisherman, a driK with the Cde allowing you to cover more water and get your baits in front of a few nice flaMes. Back of the hole in the wall and the hole itself has also produced a few bream, trevally and flathead this week.

Under the bridge, has seen a marked increase in flathead acCvity this week. With one regular patron, coming in the other day, reporCng having an esCmated 80cm flathead take a 2.5” Bait Junkie soK plasCc grub literally a rod length in front of him before it gave him a merry chase back under the bridge for around for 20+ minutes. He managed to land the fish on the rocky edge before the big girl wore through his light 8lb leader with one final head shake as she swam back to the depths. Leaving him both shaEered and elated at the same Cme. From his descripCon of the fight, it will be a memory that will stay with him for years to come.

Tuross river.

Good numbers of flathead, bream, mud crabs and even salmon have been reported in the lower parts of the system this week. Graham and Jack have been out a few Cmes and have managed several nice bream and even some salmon within the estuary system itself. The salmon are lots of fun on light bream and flaEy gear. Try throwing small bait fish profile soK plasCcs if you come across a school.

The potato point flats on the southern shore of the lower estuary have been holding good numbers of flathead, as the water temperature increases.

Fish have also been reported in around 4 ways and the cooper island areas, leaving plenty of space to explore as the water conCnues to clear. The upper secCons have sCll been described as dirty compared to the lower secCons. A few more weeks of no rain will see these areas also clear up.

Rock and beach.

There have been good numbers of salmon reported from the more southern beaches this week. The breakwall at Moruya has seen a liEle bit of acCon as well. There have been reports from the Congo beaches of reasonable numbers of bream and whiCng in the guEers in front of the creek. It will only be a maEer of Cme before these fish move into the creek proper, and repopulate what has been a closed waterway for a good few years.

Offshore.

Good snapper from 40-60cm have been reported this week in 30-40m of water. The reefs in front of Congo are holding good fish. There are also good numbers of flathead available in the same water depths.
