editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, This week sees the recogni@on of one year since the start of the Currowan bushfire.

anecdotes and images that “shared the stories of our community’s recovery as a “record of our resilience and a celebra@on of the courage and compassion that makes our community so special”.

To mark the anniversary of the start of the fires Council this week set their flags at half mast.

While it might be a @me to reflect on the past it is also the @me when we look ahead at the coming bushfire season and ask “What have we learnt?, What has been done to prepare?”

Some good news is reports that telecommunica@ons are more resilient with new power back-up systems installed by Telstra, and the shire’s evacua@on centres are being hard wired with back-up power connec@ons before Christmas.

The power network is more robust with new poles, and Essen@al Energy has even delivered standalone power supplies in remote communi@es.

Addi@onally Council expect to have built 14 new fire resilient concrete bridges, replacing @mber structures lost in the fires and the highways and local roads are now less suscep@ble to tree fall, with significant burnt and hazardous trees being removed.

Other good news are reports that businesses throughout the shire, including aged care facili@es and petrol sta@ons have taken steps to be more prepared for disasters with some adding permanent back-up power systems while others have worked on their ‘stay in place’ plans.

As a community we have seen first hand the impacts of the fires, to wildlife, to residents, to homes and to our economy. We have also witnessed the failure of Local, State and Federal government to have an@cipated the inevitable and predicted fire-storms we can come to expect from climate change.

Whilst locally our Council might say “In 2019 we saw the driest condi@ons in recorded history, while in 2020 we’ve seen three floods and have La Niña in play,” this weekend is predicted to set an all-@me record for Australia’s hoJest ever November day with the mercury rising close to 50C with a 4500km-long heatwave moving across the Na@on.

This week saw Council vote to block a third expert scien@st to a seat on their Coastal CommiJee saying they already had two and that was enough. This is the same Council who refuse to accept Climate Change. This is the same Council who say everything is OK because we have La Niña in play. Fortunately La Niña is aiding the rebirth of the 80% of forest we lost and the clawback of wildlife so devastated by the fires.

As the hint of wood smoke driMs across the region there are many who will look back at the last year and realise that liJle has changed and most of the recommenda@ons of the Inquiries and Commissions will go unheeded. And they will know the only one they can truly rely on is themselves, their family and their community and hope they never live through that experience again.

Boaters Urged To Play It Safe With Strong Change Forecast Boaters are being Vol 16 September 15thurged 2017 to check forecast weather and sea 28 December 7th,heading 2017 Vol 48 2018 condi@ons before out this weekend, with a strong 111April July 27th 12th 2019 southerly changed expected to create hazardous condi@ons on Sunday as it heads up the NSW coast.

Ahead of Sunday’s change, the Bureau of Meteorology have advised that on Saturday strong sea breezes along the coast, especially during the aMernoon, are likely to whip up seas and provide challenging condi@ons, par@cularly for inexperienced boaters.

Sunday’s strong southerly change is predicted to move through south coastal waters in the morning, reaching Sydney by mid to late aMernoon.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos said predicted heatwave condi@ons along the coast this weekend were expected to aJract many boaters to the coast seeking relief from the oppressive condi@ons.

“Marine Rescue volunteers are frequently called to help boaters who find themselves in serious trouble aMer misjudging weather and sea condi@ons and not heeding weather warnings,” he said.

“It’s vital that you check weather and sea condi@ons before heading out and regularly throughout the day as condi@ons may change quickly.

“You can also call your local Marine Rescue base on VHF Channel 16 at any @me for an update on current and forecast weather and sea condi@ons.”

Commissioner Tannos added that boaters should plan to be back at anchor ahead of the predicted change’s arrival.

“Boa@ng in poor weather accounted for 33 fatali@es in the 10 years to 30 June, 2020 and commonly results in preventable situa@ons like passengers falling overboard or capsizes,” Mr Tannos said.

“That’s why boaters this weekend should plan their @me on the water so they are safely back at anchor ahead of the arrival of any predicted severe weather ,” he added.

Commissioner Tannos said it was important for boaters to understand the limits of their vessel for the forecast condi@ons and to follow the simple advice: if in doubt, don’t go out.

“We urge anyone heading out on the water to Log On with Marine Rescue NSW as they head out on VHF Channel 16 or the free MarineRescue App so our volunteers can keep watch. If you’re not back safely as planned, we’ll start to search for you.

“It’s also vital to make sure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket.”

Salvage opera+on of Salvatore V complete at Bermagui NSW has completed the salvage of the 18-metre Vol 16 Mari@me September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 @mber fishing vessel Salvatore V which ran aground at Haywards Beach last Thursday.

NSW Mari@me Execu@ve Director Mark Hutchings said salvage crews had been opera@ng on the beach and on the water for the last week to ensure the vessel and all debris associated with it was removed safely and quickly.

“We are pleased that the salvage of the vessel has now been completed just over a week since it ran aground four kilometres north of Bermagui,” Mr Hutchings said.

“The heavy machinery and plant equipment, ground crews and mari@me crews will be leaving the site today as most of the vessel and debris has been removed.

“NSW Mari@me will con@nue to monitor Haywards beach over the next few weeks to ensure any extra debris washed ashore from the vessel is collected and removed safely.”

The vessel ran aground last Thursday when it was returning to port. A large swell, limited vehicle access, combined with high @des on Thursday and Friday night made the salvage of the vessel and debris complex for ground and water crews.

“Due to the state of the vessel, it was not possible to re-float it, therefore we needed several excavators, trucks and skip bins to break it up and remove the debris offsite to an authorised waste facility,” Mr Hutchings said.

Mr Hutchings said boat operators should con@nue to be on the lookout for the any debris which may present a naviga@onal hazard.

“We would like to thank the community for its pa@ence during the salvage.”

NSW Mari@me, as lead agency on marine pollu@on, has worked with Environment Protec@on Authority, Na@onal Parks and Wildlife Service and Bega Valley Council.

Year 4 students from Batemans Bay Public and St Bernard’s Primary Schools have been cleaning up at Surfside and Caseys Beaches. Council’s environmental project officer Lily Berry said students were surprised to find so much rubbish on the beach.

“The schools in Batemans Bay are lucky to be a short distance to the ocean but that also means that any rubbish dropped in the playground can easily end up in the Clyde Estuary,” Ms Berry said.

Bay Public School student Huon Norris is a weekend fisher at South Durras and said he regularly saw liJle penguins.

“The islands I've seen them on are Wasp Island, Grasshopper Island and Flat Rock. They are always around big bait balls and around South Durras they are very well fed,” he said.

However Ms Berry said this was the first @me some of the students had even heard of liJle penguins in the area.

“The items we collected – things like plas@c food packaging, boJles, cans and fishing line – is a threat to liJle penguins and other marine wildlife. We have seen this kind of plas@c rubbish in the nests of the penguins on Snapper Island,” Ms Berry said.

“All up we removed more than 50 kilograms of rubbish, which was sorted and the data logged in Australian Marine Debris Ini@a@ve Database using the Tangaroa Blue app. This means the kids are helping find solu@ons and iden@fy the source of commonly found items.

“It also brought home to them that the best way to help our wildlife is avoid single-use plas@c to reduce rubbish geRng into the environment in the first place and disposing of waste properly.”

Addi@onal clean-ups with Sunshine Bay Public School and the Batemans Bay High School Student Environment Council are planned for the near future.

New Laws To Empower Landowners and NSW RFS To Manage Bushfire Risk The NSW Government has announced that it will introduce laws to simplify rules for16landowners seeking Vol September 15th 2017 to mi@gate bushfire risks on their proper@es and give the NSW 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Commissioner sweeping new powers to direct hazard reduc@on ac@vi@es.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David EllioJ said the Rural Fires Act 1997 would be amended to allow rural landowners to clear up to 25 metres on their property from the boundary without onerous approvals.

A Code will be developed and will have regard to issues such as clearing in endangered and threatened species habitat as well as clearing for non-bushfire risk mi@ga@on purposes.

“The NSW RFS will also be given stronger and clearer powers to audit and address bushfire risks, ensuring public lands are treated the same way as private land holders,” Mr EllioJ said. “A new statutory obliga@on will be created requiring all complaints about hazard reduc@on ac@vi@es, including those rela@ng to public authori@es, to be forwarded to the NSW RFS Commissioner for assessment and ac@on.”

The NSW RFS Commissioner will have the power to issue Bushfire Hazard Reduc@on No@ces to public authori@es in circumstances where vegeta@on should be cleared to protect lives or property. Mr EllioJ added that if mi@ga@on works are not undertaken in a @mely manner, the NSW RFS can undertake such works and send the land manager the bill.

“The new laws are based on the expert opera@onal advice of the NSW RFS, and will ensure that rural landowners are able to clear up to 25 metres of vegeta@on on their property without facing @me consuming approvals,” Mr EllioJ said.

“There will be s+ff fines for people that leave their communi+es vulnerable to bushfires, with penal+es set to be doubled for corpora+ons and public landowners that fail to meet their obliga+ons. If public authori+es fail to clear lands, the NSW RFS will step in.

“This is not only the most landowner friendly legisla@on, but it is puRng public safety above all else.”

NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Rob Rogers welcomed the addi@onal powers.

“These measures will empower community members to beJer protect their homes and property with as liJle bureaucracy as possible,” Commissioner Rogers said.

“The changes to the legisla@on reflect the clear recommenda@ons from the NSW Bushfire Inquiry, and will help the NSW Rural Fire Service in its role to manage and beJer protect communi@es across the State from bushfires.”

New provisions will allow the NSW RFS to appoint and direct ‘industry’ brigades, and to allow for the appointment of a representa@ve of Aboriginal Land Councils on the State’s peak Bushfire Coordina@ng CommiJee.

Kathryn Maxwell, SAGE Veggies for All Program Coordinator has welcomed the 2020 grant and says her dedicated team of volunteers are very keen to start working on this new program.

“The IMB Bank Community Founda@on's con@nued support for the backyard and community veggie growing program has helped many people reap the benefits of growing their own vegetables and herbs,” said Kathryn Maxwell (below) “With their support, we will now be able to install more than 30 veggie beds in gardens damaged by last summer's bushfires, and host three veggie gardening workshops. We will also be able to build new wicking beds at the SAGE Garden Moruya to grow food for the SAGE Community Food Program which provides food to welfare groups and people in need,” said Kathryn Maxwell.

In the past 3 years, volunteers installed more than 200 veggie beds in backyards across the Eurobodalla, built 14 wicking bed allotments at the SAGE Moruya Community Garden at St John's Church, and hosted veggie growing workshops for than 500 people.

“Spending @me in the garden growing food is a fun and healthy ac@vity and it’s rewarding to help people get back into their happy gardening place,” said Kathryn Maxwell.

“The events of 2020 have highlighted the important role IMB Bank’s Community Founda@on plays at a local grassroots level,” said Robert Ryan, IMB Bank CEO. “SAGE’s Veggies for All is a great example of a South Coast community group stepping up to help others in difficult @mes. Bay Push pushes ahead for Variety Park splash pad Councillors this week were addressed by Mr Charles Stuart in regards to the Corrigans Beach Reserve Plan of Management.

complete, Variety Inclusive Playground at Batehaven. He reminded the councillors that a pe@@on signed by 794 residents was presented to Council in September last year.

The pe@@on called for approval to a low impact kiddies splashpad at Corrigans Reserve that will be inclusive for all children irrespec@ve of ability.

He advised the councillors, once again, that the pe@@on was a liJle unique in that the content of the pe@@on was explained in person to each and every signatory, mainly conducted in the Batehaven area, because his organisa@on, The Bay Push, wanted to make it a meaningful pe@@on and not a signature farming exercise.

Mr Stuart told the councillors in his Public Forum presenta@on "Since the pe@@on presenta@on and my address to council late last year, I have been in regular contact with Fiona Robbe, the architect who designed the highly successful – ‘Variety Inclusive Playground, Batemans Bay’. Fiona specialises in inclusive design and proposes a unique water experience, whereby children who are unable to access the proposed Water Park at Mackay Park through disability, may enjoy a more gently water experience at the proposed Splashpad.

"Fiona points out that the children with special needs cannot tolerate a large indoor water park with water slides and @pping bucket, both of which cause excessive noise.

"Fiona recommends a Interac@ve water play area comprising three zones, namely: Zone 1: A series of four hooped arches made up of low misty spray gradua@ng in height and spray strength.

Zone 2: A series of taps and pumps for water play.

Zone 3: A tradi@onal splash pad with ground level and raised nozzles and sprays. No @pping buckets, no swivel guns or slides.

These components would likely result in meltdowns and other behavioural issues.

"The benefits of this waterplay area will enable users to become comfortable with water, reinforce mobility skills in wet condi@ons and act as a transi@on to a larger facility with confidence, such as the facility proposed at Mackay Park.

"It is envisaged that the water play area will be installed adjacent to and compliment the highly popular Variety Inclusive Playground, Batemans Bay. The water play area will be fenced, be accessible to all and free of charge" When asked what was required by means of delivering the splash pad Mr Stuart told Councillors it needed an area of 6m x 20m. A severe-to-extreme heatwave across every mainland state and territory is set to bring mul@ple consecu@ve days of 40-degree temperatures, with searing heat priming fire condi@ons.

“As a result of climate change, we are seeing heatwaves star@ng earlier in the season and they are becoming more frequent and even hoJer,” said Climate Councillor and public health physician, Dr Kate Charlesworth.

“Heatwaves are a silent killer, leading to more deaths than all the other extreme weather events combined including bushfires, cyclones, and floods,” said Dr Charlesworth.

“A year on from the horror that was the Black Summer bushfires, Australians know all too well the dangers associated with prolonged extreme heat,” said Climate Councillor, and climate change expert, Professor Will Steffen.

“2019 was the hoJest and driest year on record for Australia, and the second hoJest for the en@re planet.

Extreme heat and dry condi@ons are part of a long-term warming trend driven by climate change, which set the scene for what was to become the worst fire season Australia has ever experienced,” he said.

“Since 1960, the number of record hot days in Australia has doubled, and this increase is being driven by the burning of coal, oil and gas,” said Professor Steffen.

“To protect Australians we must rapidly and deeply reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and make the switch to renewable energy,” he said.

Pets and hot days Pets, dogs, cats, other furry and feathered friends can dehydrate really quickly on these hot days, so always ensure plenty of fresh cool water is available, also pet fountains are a great idea, pets love running water.

If your pet is outside please make sure it has plenty of shade and is not leM siRng for long periods in the hot sunlight. Be careful not to over exercise your pet, they will keep chasing a ball not knowing when to stop. If you are walking your dog on the road, touch the asphalt and if it burns your hand or foot please don't make your dog walk on it with their liJle paws, and limit the length of the walk.

Never leave your pet in a parked car, even if the windows are down and car is parked in the shade temperatures can s@ll rise drama@cally and animals don't cope well in high temperatures.

First signs of distress is excessive pan@ng or difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or complete collapsing and at worst fatal heat stroke. Some breeds, elderly or unwell, over weight and long haired pets can be more suscep@ble, so maybe a summer clip might be a good idea. On a really hot day, keep your pet inside with the air condi@oner on and if you find your pet is really distressed and suffering from the heat call your local vet.

Lack of bushfire response is leaving South Coast communities exposed Independent NSW MLC Justin Field has called on the NSW Government to get serious about implementing Vol 16recommendations September 15th 2017of the NSW Bushfire Inquiry to ensure sufficient investment in the NSW state budget the 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

to implement the 76 recommendations of the inquiry report. The South Coast Independent MP said "To date, the Government has failed to provide any indication of how the 76 recommendations will be implemented despite supporting all when the report was released in August.

"Last season’s fires are estimated to have cost the Australian economy at least $100 billion.

"Yet the only investment by the NSW Government since last season’s devastating fires is $45 million to expand hazard reduction burns and upgrades to RFS equipment which was announced in May, months before the inquiry report was finalised.

“It’s been almost three months since the Government released the Independent NSW Bushfire Inquiry Report and six weeks since the 2020/21 bushfire season started yet the Government has still not formally responded to the report or announced a plan to implement these important recommendations.

“There was one sitting week left in this Parliamentary year, yet the only legislative response on the table was an environmentally destructive land clearing policy that is not even a recommendation from the report (see more information below).

“I want to see a significant investment in this year’s budget and a roadmap for implementation of the recommendations. To not learn the lessons from last season, after so many lost so much, is to fail those communities.

“My fear is that Covid-19 has distracted from the bushfire response and some in the Government are playing politics with this important issue instead of making the investments needed.

“Recommendation 1 of the inquiry was to ensure timely and transparent implementation of the recommendations and an accountability mechanism to track implementation. One this first and most basic measure the Government is failing and is leaving communities exposed.

“Given the moisture in the ground at the moment, fingers crossed we won’t have a catastrophic fire season this year on the South Coast, but that doesn’t take away from the need to fully implement the recommendation which will take years of dedicated effort,” Mr Field said.

In recent years, Linda has hosted public forums for aid and academic groups on Australia's aid program and on Pakistan.

Originally from Perth, Linda began as a graduate cadet at West Australian Newspapers, aMer lingering long enough at both Murdoch University and UWA to get an arts degree.

More than 230 people responded to their survey to pick the design for the new playground earlier this month - this one (image: op@on C) was the clear winner with 74% of the votes and will be installed next year.

Through the process some residents let Council know they’d prefer the playground to be next to the skate park, rather than where the exis@ng playground is at the corner of Village Road and Corilla Street.

This aligns with long-term planning in Council’s Recrea@on and Open Space Strategy so they are inves@ga@ng this opportunity and keen to hear more views.

Due to COVID-19 event bans this year’s oyster festival did not going ahead as planned. The Narooma Rocks board used the down time to develop an event strategy with a vibrant program of activities to promote Narooma, its regional neighbours and the South Coast oyster industry.

“The annual Narooma Oyster Festival will still be our flagship event, with plans for the 2021 festival well underway for the weekend of 1 May 2021.

However, one of the great lessons from the bushfires for summer tourism towns like Narooma, is we need to give people a reason to come all year round. We hope Narooma Rocks can play a role in contributing to that,” said Mrs Peachey.

The event strategy includes the oyster festival as the headline act alongside a seasonally inspired destination dining series launching early next year. The plan also involves a roving oyster bar that sells multi-estuary rock oyster tasting plates and aspires to hosting a state food tourism conference.

The space is needed for storage of donated equipment and an area where members can get together to do some basic wood working.

"Last year we met on Mondays and Wednesdays from about 9.00am un@l 3.00pm with monthly social mee@ngs on Saturday.

"We are seeking a farm shed or factory space within the northern end of the Shire and can pay a minimal rental," Eric said.

TAFE NSW will play a leading role in helping Moruya locals reskill for the jobs of the future as part of a landmark NSW Government ini@a@ve, TAFE NSW Managing Director Steffen Faurby has announced.

As a key plank of the state’s COVID-19 Recovery Plan, the NSW Government has commiJed close to $160 million to match the Australian Government’s JobTrainer fund.

Enrolments for job seekers and school leavers are now open at TAFE NSW through the JobTrainer and Summer Skills programs.

The programs offer hundreds of fee-free and low cost courses targeted at growth employment sectors such as healthcare, early childhood, community services, food sciences, agriculture, hor@culture, accoun@ng and finance, and building trades.

Mr Faurby urged locals to inves@gate how the JobTrainer and Summer Skills programs could help them gain the skills to be in-demand in the post-COVID jobs market.

“We have to skill the workforce to take advantage of future job opportuni@es which may be very different to jobs in the pre-COVID economy,” Mr Faurby said.

“TAFE NSW is absolutely commiJed to ensuring NSW remains the most highly skilled workforce in the country.”

“We are working closely with industry to ensure we are delivering a pipeline of job-ready graduates armed with the latest skills to help kick-start the economy,” Mr Faurby said.

TAFE NSW’s Summer Skills fee free short course program is specifically designed to help school leavers bridge the gap from school to work, or school to further study.

At the Ordinary Mee@ng of Council on 11 August 2020 (Minute 20/140) it was resolved to adver@se for Expressions of Interest (EOI) to appoint a new Coast and Environment Management Advisory CommiJee. In accordance with this direc@on, staff called for EOI to fill all vo@ng seats on the CEMAC. Nomina@ons for the majority of the seats were received by Council. Council received thirteen nomina@ons for the twelve posi@ons (as listed below) on CEMAC.

Unfortunately, no nomina+ons were received for the recrea+on and business and tourism posi+ons.

Should we fill it, fill all nomina)ons, all three, and I think all very worthy nomina)ons the posi)on we would have three out of thirteen. You are talking about balance, talking about cohesion ... I think the more scien)fic objec)ve perspec)ves we have the be;er. I see no merit in excluding any one of those three nominees from this commi;ee.

"It is not a decision making commi;ee, it merely provides advice. As far as I'm concerned you are trying to diminish the input of science to our decisions and I have no inten)on whatsoever of agreeing with your amendment".

And who was Applicant Number 13 that Mayor Innes and her vo+ng bloc decided to reject rather than accommodate and welcome to the fold?

Applicant Number 13 is a full @me resident of the Eurobodalla and has a long associa@on with the area.

Applicant Number 13 has a: B.Sc. (Hons 1) and Ph.D. (Science) degrees in coastal geography/ geomorphology. The applied geography honours degree, majored in coastal geomorphology and pedology, was specifically geared to produce graduates with skills in natural resource management and environmental impact assessment, with the honours project (Moruya - A Case Study in Beach Response) focussing on post-storm recovery processes on a Eurobodalla beach. These skills and knowledge were expanded by high level environmental research on the N.S.W. coast, culmina@ng in a successful Ph.D. thesis incorpora@ng quan@ta@ve data characteriza@on and sta@s@cal analyses to develop a regional morphodynamic model of the NSW coast integra@ng wave climate and bathymetry.

These high level professional degree qualifica@ons were followed by more than twenty years experience in senior level policy, scien@fic and management posi@ons within NSW Government agencies working on natural resource management, water quality, catchment management, contaminated site management and climate change/energy issues, which has engendered well developed strategic thinking and planning skills required for the review, analysis and development of natural resource technical and policy advice.

The Ph.D. thesis has provided the broad perspec@ve necessary to develop significant recommenda@ons whose implica@ons can affect a wide range of stakeholders.

Applicant Number 13 is experienced in commiJee work processes, having undertaken the role of agency representa@ve on a variety of commiJees/working groups including the Protec@on of the Natural Environment Standing CommiJee of the NSW Coastal CommiJee On hearing of the decision to block Applicant Number 13 against the recommenda@ons of staff community members could only shake their heads and recognise that the Eurobodalla Council vo@ng bloc under Mayor Innes s@ll refuses to officially recognise Climate Change.

ACCIDENT.– A painful accident befell Mr. Clive Burke on Wednesday morning through a piece of timber, which he had placed on the circular saw at Mitchell’s Moggendoura mill, flying back and striking him on the forehead, severely bruising it, cutting his nose and blackening his eyes. Mr. Burke was indeed fortunate in escaping from being killed, as the wood after hitting him flew through the shed landing some distance away.

MORUYA PONY RACES The Moruya Pony Club’s race meeting on behalf of the local Hospital eventuated on Wednesday and was fairly well patronised. The weather was most unpropitious for an outing, a Scotch mist, with a cold southerly wind, lasting throughout the day. All the officials as usual connected with the Club worked harmoniously and everything passed off most pleasantly, with the exception of a disturbance caused by W. Read, owner and rider of Suzette in the Flying Handicap, striking the Stipendiary, Mr. A. H. Turner, when informed by that official that he had decided to disqualify him (Read) and the mare for suspicious running. Read, however bumped a snag and received a Roland for his Oliver and was ejected from the room with his nasal organ manifesting signs of his fighting blood.

Mr Turner was, apparently, the right man in the right place as he was ever on the alert to keep the sport clean and protect the public.

As on the previous day the scratching pen was again freely used, leaving only three contestants in the principal events.

One of the most exciting contests of the day was that witnessed in the Novelty Race for wee ponies when Mr. Millard’s tiny white Arab (for which he some time ago refused £50) ridden by his midget son downed the odds-on hot favorite, King’s Own. Women of Steel is the powerful story of women who took on BHP to demand and get jobs in the steelworks at Port Kembla. They never gave up, they had faith in their strength as a group of strong women with the community backing them.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION AT ‘THE BAS’ - UNTOLD EUROBODALLA by Lee Grant and Amadis Lacheta What makes where we live special, and why have people chosen to seJle here?

What creates culture in a place and how does our community contribute to and celebrate that unique culture?

Ar@sts and Eurobodalla residents, Lee Grant and Amadis Lacheta have sought to find answers to these ques@ons through their project, Untold Eurobodalla.

Ms Lacheta remarks: “Robust regional communi@es are diverse, crea@ve and responsive to change. The people living in them are mul@-faceted and oMen have numerous talents and means of expressing those giMs that make them interes@ng on a personal and collec@ve level”.

Untold Eurobodalla takes a lateral approach to examining the mul@tude of ways that local residents contribute to the place they call home and shares their dis@nc@ve stories through photography, film and the wriJen word.

At a @me of significant challenge for many people in the aMermath of the bushfires, and with the ongoing renego@a@on of life due to COVID-19, reminding ourselves of what really maJers, cherishing what we have and building on our strengths are vital pathways to the future.

About the Ar+sts: Lee is a photographic ar@st based on the South Coast of NSW. She has a Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology) and a Master of Philosophy (Visual Arts) from the Australian Na@onal University. She works on commissions and long form independent and collabora@ve projects dealing with themes of community, iden@ty and belonging and how landscape (both natural and inhabited) relates to these concepts. Working across mediums, Lee’s prac@ce combines photography, video, sound and text in projects that are oMen underpinned with ins@tu@onal and found archives.

Amadis has worked for the past 25 years across the arts, sustainability, government, business and community sectors in NSW, around Australia and overseas. She has a Bachelor of Music in composi@on and piano from the University of Adelaide, and strongly values how the arts can significantly contribute to the wellbeing of communi@es within and beyond the confines of professional arts prac@ce.

As a composer, writer, gardener and home builder she takes a transdisciplinary and holis@c approach to crea@vity. She has wriJen for Green Magazine, Earth Garden and other publica@ons on the topics of sustainable gardening, architecture, food produc@on and renewable energy. Congo Crafts, is holding its 35th Annual Exhibition, showcasing a diverse range of functional and decorative stoneware ceramics and Volpaintings 16 September 15th 2017 on canvas.

and has been continuously exhibiting works ever since. All the ceramics and paintings have been created by Jim Simms in his Congo studio, and he has been working in the arts for over forty years.

Strongly influenced by Japanese, Korean and Chinese ceramics, Jim continues to produce a range of beautiful pieces, and is noted for the quality of his glazes.

Each year he experiments with new matt and gloss finishes, resulting in a varied and stunning palette of rich and more subtle colourings. Each wood-fired piece is uniquely burnished by the ash and flames of the firing.

Jim has many happy local, national and international clients who have admired and collected his work over a number of years.

Two of the four performances scheduled for 2020 had to be cancelled because of COVID restric@ons., but live performance is returning to the South Coast. Some of the audience experience will be different, but the important part – listening to interna@onal standard musicians play classical music in a venue with performance hall acous@cs and views of Batemans Bay – remains the same.

28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Winners were: A Grade: Leonie Doolan with a score of 37 points with Teri Swanbury the Runner-Up on 34 points A Mother and Daughter took out B Grade - who would have thought!

Shirley Quinlan had 37 points, just pipping her daughter, Samantha Dryden on 36 points.

C Grade: Margaret Downey had an excellent 37 points (with three wipes!). The Runner-Up was Dianne O'Shea on 30 points.

A special surprise on the day was a giM of almond cake and rocky road for everyone, beau@fully presented by AnneJe Manton to celebrate her birthday.

Moruya Ladies Golf Results Wednesday, 25h November Moruya Lady Golfer’s played the 5th Hamper Stableford Round on Wednesday with many of the 26 player’s who presented submiRng quite substan@al scores.

Jan Lumsden was again the well deserved winner for Division 1 scoring an impressive 38 neJ, narrowly taking the lead from R/U Penny Dye who scored a most respectable 37 neJ on C/B. Joanne Dixon determinedly maintained her focus playing her best game of the year taking out 1st place in Division 2 with a magnificent 42 neJ, R/U Marilyn Bingham was also on her game scoring a very acceptable 37 neJ.

High Scores prevail at Tuross Vets Golf Single Stableford Players came out in force at the Tuross Head Veteran golfers' Single Stableford event held on Wednesday 25 November with 65 players registering. Winner on the day with what is possibly his best ever 9 hole round at Tuross was Ian Manton (photo) with a 1 over par round of 36 strokes to record an outstanding 28 Stableford points.

Ian beat home Julie Barningham with 26, Blaise Madden on 25 and Mike Birks who scored 24 points. Great scores by all players.

Minor prizes went to Tony Crook, Robin Green, Kevin Dukes, and Ken Brown with 22 points, Ann Ware, Rick Brake and Peter McRae on 21, Barry Hoban, Allen Lee, Paul Pereira and Gail Rogers on 20, Henry Anderson, Andrew Gordon, Paul Green, Chris WraJen and Noel Downie all on 19, and finally Richard Kelly, Ann Challender and Ross Hendy on 18. With a warmer than average forecast for this weekend, I feel that some @me on a shady river bank, is going to be the tonic for what ails you. The Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, on 2017the improve this week, with reports star@ng to come in is certainly Volriver 48 27th 111April July 12th 2018 2019 of fish being caught throughout the system. The river up around Yarragee bend has been described as clear but tannin stained this week. There have been reports of a few flathead star@ng to show up this far up the system, a good sign that the salt water is finally making its way upstream. This gives up you all plenty of op@ons on areas to explore.

Down towards the front of the system has, again, been the pick of areas to fish this week, with bream and whi@ng star@ng to make an appearance on the flats and channel edges. Live nippers or live worms have been the best baits this week. With soM plas@cs and surface style lures also star@ng to get amongst it as well.

The wind will have a big influence this weekend, par@cularly during the middle of the day. Fish early or late to avoid the worst of the wind, with Saturday looking beJer than Sunday.

Tuross river.

Good flathead have been reported this week, with a really nice 92cm specimen being caught last Saturday from the Tuross boat shed. The majority of the fish are s@ll being caught around the southern flats towards the potato point side of the river this week. There have also been reports of a few whi@ng star@ng to also appear as the warmer waters are star@ng to get things s@rred up. As the salt water influence con@nues to move further up stream, areas around 4 ways and above will start to become beJer op@ons for finding fish.

Surface lures fished around the oyster leases area again star@ng to produce the goods with the bream fishos. Cicada style lures will also tempt bream, as they become a food source moving into summer.

Rock and beach.

The salmon con@nue to keep a few beach fishos entertained this week. As the ouflow from the rivers is clearing up, the Moruya breakwall and Tuross mouth areas are staring to fish beJer. The mouth of Congo creek also has a few whi@ng and bream on the beaches to keep anglers both happy and fed.

Again the early morning and late aMernoon/evening sessions will be the best, both with the @des and the wind.

Baits of ganged pilchards, live nippers or live beach worms will be the best op@ons.

Offshore.

Reports of good numbers of flathead, snapper, and gummy sharks are con@nuing to come in this week from those who have got out for a fish. Try the usual haunts in around 30-40m of water as a star@ng point. Early morning session will be the best op@ons before the wind comes up. The forecast for Sunday is approaching 55kmph so be aware of condi@ons. Whether the winds actually reach these predicted speeds is yet to be seen.

One product to look at in par@cular is the Thermacell range of mosquito repellent devices. With the amount of rain we have had, and the amount of mozzies already around. These units create a 21 square meter sphere that repels the mozzies and other bi@es. They use a mat or pad that provides 4 hours of protec@on. Graham has grabbed a couple to try at home, but from the reports I have had, they work very well. Come in and check them out today.
