editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, As the Mayor recently said during a council debate on whether the community have been fully informed of the16financial facts Vol September 15tharound 2017 the $70m Mackay Park project “The community knows what the community 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 knows”.

We then learnt that not only did the community not know some criEcal and material informaEon passed on to Council by the Office of Local Government but that the Mayor and Councillors also didn’t know it.

Now we segue to the wonderful statement (in part) “as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns” This week we, as a NaEon, learnt of the unknowns of Afghanistan, that were in fact Known, but just not by us. At a Federal level we are learning of what happens in the corridors of Parliament House. InformaEon Known to some but not by us. At a State Level it appears there is also a plethora of informaEon that is only Known to a few but not by us. We only learn of these things aKer the fact.

The same applies at a local level. Every fortnight the councillors are briefed by staff of the “vision” that staff have that they intend to recommend that councillors endorse. Councillors learn, by drip feed, on a needs to know basis, of intended “visions” such as the Gateway to The Bay, the acquisiEon of the Batemans Bay Bowling Club, the intended demoliEon of the Batemans Bay Pool, the removal of the Mini Golf, the intenEon to sell the Batemans Bay Community Centre and InformaEon Centre. They learn of these things behind closed doors, are told they will be asked to vote, and are also told to say nothing to the community ensuring that the “The community knows what the community knows”.

What is becoming more and more evident is that Council staff are desperately trying to keep control of the message and have even become paranoid of councillors revealing what happens behind closed doors.

InformaEon is filtered and dispensed only to trusted councillors. Knowing this our more vocal councillors sit under threat of being ostracised and deemed an untrustworthy outsider if they do not toe the general consensus of staff and the dominant, and oKen bullying voEng block. “Either you are with Us or against”.

But the recent revelaEon that the General Manger and her staff were privy to a leNer containing material importance to a $19 million vote, and that they did not pass this informaEon on, reveals that “Our Councillors only know what our councillors know” and may well be in the dark over a host of other maNers.

It would not be surprising to hear a councillor say “as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns” The recent announcements of $8.5 million for two, as yet unendorsed projects in the Shire, came as a surprise to the community and to councillors. It appears that Planning staff are happy to bypass public consultaEon and due process and allow the Minister to endorse projects such as the Coastal Walk and Mogo Mountain Bike track long before the councillors are called to vote. It becomes clear that councillors have become rubber stamps to anything put before them in fear of the wrath of staff if they do not comply.

So what do the councillors know? It appears to be very liNle. Will an elecEon of new councillors change that? No. So next week don’t be surprised if the councillors vote to lease the Community Centre SEARMS and don’t be surprised if the meeEng takes longer than the record achieved last week of 15:22 minutes. A record !!

COVID-19 detected in samples taken on Tuesday 17 November from BBay system Vol 16 September 15thsewerage 2017 Vol 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

NSW Health advise: Fragments of the virus that causes COVID-19 have been detected in samples taken on Tuesday 17 November from the sewerage system that serves Batemans Bay as part of the state’s sewage surveillance program.

The catchment takes sewage from approximately 21,000 people.

The posiEve sewage result can be due to shedding of the virus by someone who may have previously had the illness, with the virus ‘shedding’ through their system for up to six to eight weeks later.

While this posiEve result may be explained by a previous case who is no longer infecEous, as a precauEon, NSW Health is calling on people in the Batemans Bay area to get tested if they have even the mildest COVID-19 symptoms.

to tell Council yet again to “Get Your Hands Off It”. Meals on Wheels sent their apologies having a prior to volunteer training day for its hundreds of members.

Clr Anthony Mayne spoke to the crowd about the importance of the community centre urging them to let councillors know their feelings by contacEng them personally and/or speaking to the meeEng next Tuesday during public forum session. Clr Mayne acknowledged the hard work of many community organisaEons in their fight to keep the community centre in community hands.

U3A representaEve Henk Roubos also addressed the crowd with a strong message from PerfEx President Dr Sue Mackenzie asking " Why weren’t the unsolicited user groups directed elsewhere to those council faciliEes current ‘underuElised’? Hanging Rock facility is hardly an appropriate alternate with its one person liK." The reference to under uElisaEon came from one councillor who advised a member of the public, asking why they had to be moved on to other Council venue, saying "I understand your concerns but am also very aware of the under-uElised spaces where most of the acEviEes can be re-housed."

While the councillor added "Mine will be a widely informed decision" it was this same councillor who only last week discovered that she was not fully informed by staff prior to a criEcal vote on one of their recommendaEons.

Our Council Our Say spokesperson, Coral Anderson, advised that the Department of EducaEon had recently taken a lease over the old Target building. However, as they will be occupying only 600sm of the 1,000sm available, she suggested that the surplus to needs space could be taken up by council’s preferred tenderer rather than pushing out the current 100+ user groups, noEng that the community centre’s total square meterage was less than the 400sm available in the old Target building.

Coral said "To the dismay, of those wishing to use the community toilets the community centre was not ‘open for business’ with the enEre building locked to public access. Not even the toilets were available for public use with a sign direcEng those in need of a comfort stop could trot over to the Visitors InformaEon Centre. The whole place was deserted, no one to be seen. It was as if the building had been abandoned."

take a well earned 6 week break. We encourage members of the community to bring in their broken items soon, if they want repairs undertaken in 2020, as things have been quite busy.

“Every Friday we repair a diverse range of goods including clothing, electrical items, bicycles, and garden equipment. Tools, materials and specialist help are all available at the Repair Cafe. Members of the community are encouraged to stay and learn how to undertake repairs (where safe) while enjoying a cuppa and yummy food”, said Deb Stevenson, Repair Cafe CommiNee Chair.

“So far of the 139 items brought in, we have kept 110 goods out of landfill and they are all now back in use.

Volunteer Julie Klugman has worked hard to record the details of each repair on a spreadsheet so that we have a picture of what we are repairing. The most common items were clothing (alteraEons and mending holes), vacuum cleaners and sewing machines” said Julie Klugman.

A special thank you to the many volunteer repairers who make themselves available each week to help our community learn how to repair and reuse their goods.

We use donaEons for repairs to purchase tools and parts required to undertake further repairs, and refreshments.

The Repair Cafe would also love a few more volunteer repairers.

This Saturday! Community comes together to Save Batemans Marine Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Sanctuaries This Saturday 21 November, community members from all walks of life will paddle out at Bar Beach in Narooma to show their support for Batemans marine sanctuaries and send a clear message to the NSW Government that they want Batemans Marine Park protecEons maintained, not undermined.

The Save Batemans Sanctuaries community campaign has been growing since December 2019 when Member for Bega, Andrew Constance, and NSW Minister for Agriculture, Adam Marshall, announced an amnesty on illegal fishing in six sanctuary zones in Batemans Marine Park, with a view to permanently rezoning the sanctuaries.

The Eurobodalla-based Nature Coast Marine Group has been the driving force behind this campaign. Bill Barker, a spokesperson for the Group, said, “It’s been fantasEc to see so many local people interested in protecEng our marine environment.

“It’s so important that we, as a community, make a big effort to persuade our local member, Andrew Constance, and the NSW Government, that when it comes to the future of Batemans Marine Park, we want the science and the community to be front and centre of any decision making”.

Fiona McCuaig, a local Bodalla business owner and conservaEonist said, “I’m excited to see such a diverse group of people coming down in celebraEon of the marine park.

“A thriving Batemans Marine Park is crucial to this region's economic survival. As a small business owner I am reliant on tourists coming to visit the marine park and spending their money in the area.

“I can’t wait to make my sign and bring my kids down on Saturday to show my support for Batemans marine sanctuaries”.

Wally Stewart, Walbunja man and NaEve Title claimant, said “my community is not happy with the removal of sanctuary protecEons.

“Illuminated, The Art of Children’s Book Illustra4on” is a display of children’s books and the beauEful illustraEons which many of the early books contain.

This is a unique opportunity to view some of our old books and will be of interest to both adults and children alike.

“Visitors will also have access to our permanent displays including the Remembrance Room describing the war heroes of Eurobodalla. The kitchen, laundry, nursery and bedroom all containing arEfacts of the mid 1800 period.

“The Rotary Room showcases the Granite story of Moruya’s connecEon to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and other Sydney landmarks. Also exhibited is the lathe, made in 1881 in Aberdeen, Scotland, and shipped to Australia where it was used to shape the granite columns. The Rotary room also houses other arEficats including those from the local dairying, agriculture, gold and shipping industries.

COVID-19 leads to a baby boom in breasCeeding A Western Sydney University expert in infant Vol 16 September 15th 2017 feeding during emergencies 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 has observed an upswing in breasZeeding during the pandemic, as well as a higher number of new mothers asking for advice.

Adjunct Associate Professor Karleen Gribble, from the university’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, said the COVID-19 health crisis has led women to conEnue breasZeeding for longer, or even restarEng breasZeeding aKer they had weaned.

“During these difficult Emes, it’s understandable for mums to be concerned about the wellbeing of their babies,” Associate Professor Gribble said.

Associate Professor Gribble is also a community educator with the Australian BreasZeeding AssociaEon (ABA), which supports breasZeeding mothers.

In April 2020, the ABA’S NaEonal BreasZeeding Helpline received almost 17 per cent more calls than its usual monthly average, with the average call length also increasing.

The findings showed those that called were concerned about many aspects of breasZeeding relaEng to COVID-19.

Out of every five calls, two were about worries to do with insufficient milk or inadequate weight gain.

“You’re meant to have people around you to provide support when you have a baby – but women are being deprived of contact with health professionals, friends and family, and even their own mothers aKer they give birth,” Associate Professor Gribble said.

“We need to support these new mums in any way that we can.”

As the divorce was not yet finalised and the separaEon had no impact on her Will, all of Monika’s assets were leK to her former husband as she had not goNen around to updaEng her Will following her separaEon. Whether it's the start of a relaEonship or the end, it’s important to understand the vital connecEon between marriage, divorce or separaEon and your Will.

Changes to your relaEonship status can impact your Will. For example if you marry or divorce, some or all of your will may be revoked, depending on the circumstances, so you need to get professional advice and you may need to update your Will.

Natalie Darcy, Senior Solicitor Estate Planning at NSW Trustee & Guardian says that it should be one of first things couples consider.

“When you get married, separated or divorced, if you don’t update an exisEng Will or have one wriNen, it can affect the people you care about. In NSW, the Succession Act 2006 governs the legal processes associated with inheritance disputes. SecEon 12 of the Act states that ge]ng married revokes a Will, although this is subject to certain excepEons. This means a person who recently married may be deemed to have died intestate – meaning they died without a valid Will – if they pass away aKer the wedding without having updated their Will, because any prior Will may be invalid.”

Intestacy rules in NSW mean the enErety of a person’s estate would go to the surviving spouse (provided there are no children from previous relaEonships). This may be okay for some, but others may want to distribute their assets to other family members or chariEes. A divorce will generally cancel your former spouse's appointment as executor, trustee or guardian in your Will, and also any gi&s in the Will in favour of your former spouse, but there are certain things relaEng to your former spouse that might remain in the Will, such as where your former spouse is appointed as trustee for assets leK by the Will on trust for beneficiaries that include your former spouse’s children.

“People spend Eme updaEng their Facebook relaEonship status, but don’t give as much thought to the important legal documents that are affected,” says Ms Darcy.

“Legal documents aren’t romanEc but updaEng your Will can be one of the most pracEcal ways to demonstrate how much you care.”

If you’re living in a de facto relaEonship at the Eme of your death and you don’t have a valid and up to date Will, the need to prove the relaEonship can result in addiEonal expense and distress to your partner at a Eme when they are grieving.

It’s much easier if you have a valid and up to date Will. This can help ensure that your affairs are managed according to your wishes (as opposed to the rules of intestacy applying if you don’t have a valid Will, or an old out of date Will applying because you didn’t keep your will up to date).

The process of making a new Will doesn’t need to be complex, Eme consuming or costly. Garlandtown upgrade bridges gap in coast route Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

A $2 million upgrade of Moruya’s Garlandtown Bridge and North Head Drive will cement extra resilience into Eurobodalla’s road network.

Council’s director of infrastructure Warren Sharpe said the upgrade was important to improving current road safety and meeEng future transport needs.

The upgrade will see the bridge strengthened and widened from 6.7 metres to 11 metres to include 2-metre wide shoulders on both sides for safer cycling. The bridge approaches will be realigned and widened to conform to current regional road standards.

“We’re in the final design stages and will begin preparatory work – clearing, road widening, culvert extensions and service relocaEon – before Christmas.

Commuters can expect significant delays on North Head Drive during work and should use the Princes Highway and Broulee Road alternaEve where possible,” Mr Sharpe said.

ConstrucEon of the actual bridge will begin next year.

Mr Sharpe said Garlandtown Bridge was an important part of the alternaEve coastal route from Batemans Bay to Moruya.

“The bridge upgrade means this key link can funcEon for people, goods and services should the Princes Highway be cut, as we saw in last summer’s bushfires,” he said.

The Garlandtown Bridge upgrade is substanEally grant funded with $691,709 from the NSW Government’s Restart NSW program and $850,000 from the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program, and the remainder coming from Council. beagle weekly : Vol 182 November 20th 2020

A New Name For A New Dawn The Far South Coast and Tablelands AssociaEon of Show SocieEes Incorporated (FSCTA) Group 6, represents the many hardworking volunteers who Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 oversee the annual running of Bega, Bemboka, Bombala, Candelo, Cobargo, Cooma, Dalgety, Delegate, Eurobodalla, Nimmitabel and Pambula Shows.

Many of our South East NSW shows have been running conEnuously for well over 120 years and only World Wars and severe floods or droughts have caused our 'local shows' to ever be cancelled before.

But with last summer's devastaEng bush fires, along with the ongoing restricEons around Covid-19 and community safety, 2020 has been a parEcularly challenging year for our Group 6 show communiEes. Indeed, many of our members have observed that, in hindsight, 2020 should have been thoroughly lunged first and then turned out for six months to calm down!

But 2021 offers our local show commiNees and our communiEes a unique opportunity to work together to recover, rebuild and even to re-invent what our local shows mean to us. And to explore the significance of these annual events to our diverse and resilient rural communiEes. Just like the communiEes we serve, our volunteers are tough, innovaEve, imaginaEve, hardworking, and maybe just a liNle bit stubborn! Which is why we are determined to get 'back on the horse' and to work hard to help our who WHOLE region to 'ride this year out'.

From the mountains to the sea, and from our farmland to our forests, we believe a new name that beNer represents the geography, and the personality of our region is just the Ecket! So, in 2021, the FSCTA will transform itself into the Far South Coast and Snowy Monaro AssociaEon (FSCSMA) - and we are inviEng our whole community along for the ride.

As part of our re-naming, we are asking YOU to help us to revive and re-invent YOUR LOCAL SHOW in 2021, by ge]ng creaEve and designing our NEW LOGO! Simply send your logo design as a PDF (either computergenerated or hand-drawn designs will be considered) and (along with the honour of being 'sashed' as the zone's new logo designer!) you could be in the running to WIN a season family pass to all our zone's 2021 shows.

With many Australians at breaking point, Vinnies Christmas Appeal will support families through a Christmas like no other.

David* is a hardworking man, and like many Australians looks forward to celebraEng Christmas with his family. However, when COVID-19 hit, his employers closed their doors and overnight he became job-less, and he and his family are experiencing poverty for the first Eme as a result. Now, David looks to the fesEve period with dread and fear as he is unable to celebrate the Eme with his loved ones as they normally do.

Vinnies Christmas Appeal is aiming to raise $300,000 in the Canberra/ Goulburn region to support families in need.

“Christmas already puts pressure on families that are experiencing difficulEes. Besides the normal stressors of bills, food, rent payments and more, there are the added difficulEes of paying for a Christmas meal and presents to celebrate with some normalcy,” said John Feint, President of the St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn. With an extreme number of job losses, recent reducEon in government support, the end of the evicEon moratorium and the economy in recession, this fesEve period will be one of the most different and difficult in years,” said Mr Feint.

Over this fesEve period, Vinnies will need to provide more food and financial support than ever before.

“It’s not just the food we provide, but the sense of security that comes with it that makes this support so important,” said Mr Feint. Ge]ng in contact with his local Vinnies store aKer the recommendaEon from a friend, David was able to receive a food hamper as well as a Woolworths voucher and a fuel card. David won’t be the only one experiencing a Christmas like this.

“It is crucial that those who can lend their support to Vinnies heading into the fesEve season do so,” said Mr Feint.

Vinnies wants this to be a Christmas like no other for all the right reasons.

Last Christmas, Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn provided 2,203 Christmas hampers to families in the region.

a dozen retired operators sought me out to write their stories.

Two further biographies followed before I called a halt. Then in 2017, I drew the threads together in Warrior Elite which explored the history of our Special Forces and the Intelligence organisations that worked with them from World War II. This took me further in the shadowy world of the Special Air Services Regiment with its symbols, rituals and code of secrecy, and deepened my knowledge of its highly developed psychological framework.

I had been to Afghanistan only once, well before the first SAS troops arrived, but it was enough to appreciate the factors at play when the two worlds collided. And every conversation with my SAS friends has confirmed the mindset that has led to the horrors revealed in the reports released this past week.

In all wars, the official propagandists insist that the enemy is so different, so alien, that they can be regarded as less than human, thereby giving the soldiers permission to kill (or be killed) in battle. In Afghanistan such propaganda was barely needed. The local Taliban-infected society was a communal relic of the 15th century. They regarded women as chattels, useful only in giving birth to sons and cooking meals. For sex they had boys.

They were tribal. Their laws were those of feud and vendetta. They had no attachment to the concept of truth; words and attitudes were tools to be deployed simply to produce a result. Into that unchanging world came the SAS operators selected and trained for a role that was almost equally alien to the values of most Australians.

In the SAS lexicon, ‘Selection’ usually refers to the hugely demanding physical course that pushes candidates to their limits before being initiated into their tribe. In fact, it is much more than that. First up, there are written tests and ‘psychological evaluations.’. Then comes the ‘barrier testing’ that can winnow out some hopefuls before the pack marches, navigation exercises carrying 32 kilo packs in high summer and other tough challenges.

The physical side is important, but the real clincher is the psychological evaluation. These are examined forensically and shared with the officers in charge so that exceptions can be made in ‘passing’ the candidate. The one vital element is whether he is sufficiently malleable to accept the values to be imposed from above. In Afghanistan this will often include the order to assassinate a fellow human being. That is the sticking point.

To assist him over the taboo the commanders will dehumanise the victim by designating him a ‘High Value Target’ (HVT). They will place the operator in a small troop that includes someone who has already been ‘blooded’. These elements will cushion the new boy’s decision to break this final taboo.

It is a heady moment. Once it is passed, the operator’s personal moral compass collapses. What remains is the faltering embrace of the Regiment. Little wonder that so many of its members suffer a debilitating PTSD. But add to the mix an imposing combative commander decorated with medals awarded by a government seeking public approval for a disastrous, unwinnable war and what do you invite?

Vol 111 July 12th 2019 by Trevor Moore The thing about being a teenager in the 1960s is that it is the Neil Mack will be featuring Tea For The decade that largely defined the person I became. The subsequent Tillerman on his next show. Listen in. decades were about honing and refining. Perhaps this applies to everyone as they grow up. But, say what you like and as I say to my suspicious offspring, the sixEes were different. There has never been a phenomenon like The Beatles.

You just have to go and look at some of those YouTube videos from the Eme. As Jonathan Richman sang alliteraEvely in his song Par+es in the USA “I’m from the 60's The Eme of Louie Louie and LiNle LaEn Lupe Lu”. The youth culture of the sixEes was defined by protest, fashion and, of course, music. The decade saw popular music grow from the classic boys meets/fancies girl (for example, 1961’s Poetry in Mo+on by Johnny Tillotson) to deeper commentary (for example 1969’s commentary on the dangers of technology, In the Year 2525 by Zager and Evans. I hold the view that we Boomers were the first youth generaEon that was able to express itself. We can overlook the fact that we nearly all sold out later on. It is hard to resist The Man.

In 1967 I was quite happy rolling along with The Beatles and The Stones, The Move and The Hollies and then a song called MaNhew and Son came along. I was on the threshold of university and that was going to take me one step closer to being a fully paid-up human being (at least so I thought; I’m sEll waiEng). The singer was Cat Stevens, and I was immediately struck by the lyrics.

He sang “there's a five-minute break, and that's all you take, or a cup of cold coffee and a piece of cake." I had never thought of pop music as the backdrop to real life. Stevens also sings about “people who've been working for fiKy years”. When I finally leK university and joined ICI as a graduate there was sEll a fiKy-year service award … and people were sEll ge]ng it. They had leK school at 14 and worked for ICI for 50 years. Unbelievable then and sEll unbelievable now, except it really happened.

MaNhew and Son isn’t interesEng only because of its social commentary. Playing bass on the single is John Paul Jones (of Led Zeppelin fame) and on keyboards is Nick Hopkins (sessions for The Stones, The Kinks, The Who and others). It wasn’t his first single: that was the somewhat prosaically enEtled I Love My Dog, which may well have been the case but that single struggled to number 28 in the UK and did not chart at all in Australia. MaNhew and Son was an altogether stronger song, both in terms of melody and arrangement and was kept from the number 1 spot in the UK by The Monkees’ I’m a Believer. It is as a songwriter that Cat Stevens’ talents primarily lie. This is not to say that he is not a first-rate performer but songs like The First Cut is the Deepest (covered in 1967 by P P Arnold) and The Tremeloes Here Come beagle weekly : Vol 182 November 20th 2020

months in hospital. He had liNle to do except to think. He read and thought about the meaning of life. He stopped shaving. He listened to a lot of music and was parEcularly taken by 1968’s Switched-On Bach by the American composer Wendy Carlos. It was this period that led, however indirectly several years later to Stevens’ conversion to Islam.

As a result of his illness his third studio album, Mona Bone Jakon came two and a half years aKer his second. This is a very different album to its predecessor, New Masters. Opening with the gentle and beauEfully arranged 1970 hit Lady D'Arbanville, it is a more thoughZul Cat Stevens who has returned. He was not short of great songs for only 6 months later, on 23 November 1970, fiKy years ago as I write, he released Tea for the Tillerman. This album ended up on every coffee table worth its salt - at least in the UK - in 1970/1971 along with George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, Carol King’s Tapestry (actually 1971) and Santana’s Abraxas.

Tea for The Tillerman established Cat Stevens as an arEst of the first order. Every song is a winner. Every arrangement is pared back to the absolute essenEals so that the melody is right on top. Neil Mack will play every track on his show: he has to play them all as it isn’t possible, in my opinion (which I admit is anything but humble), to pick one track that is beNer than another. Stevens (now Yusuf Islam) knows the album to be good because he has just released a 2020 version which is sufficiently different in its arrangement to be worth listening to. On the re-cut Father and Son, he double-tracks with his 22-year-old self, appropriate given the subject maNer of the song. The album contains some of his best-known songs: Wild World, Sad Lisa and Into White. The Etle track is a minute long but crams as much into a minute as many much longer songs fail to do and shows that he is a more than competent pianist.

Lay back and listen to Neil Mack on 25 November 2020 on 2EARFM. If you do not know Cat Stevens’ stuff, then he’ll take you through it. He’ll play songs from Teaser and the Firecat, Catch Bull at Four and Buddha and the Chocolate Box. Following his conversion to the Muslim faith at the end of 1977 and he did not play the guitar for 20 years. But over the last decade or so he has returned with some new music.

The new stuff is good but somehow it doesn’t match the pure simplicity of Teaser and the Firecat. Brilliant songs. Brilliant arrangements. Brilliant playing.

Timeless.

The new plates, which will be substituted for those at present in use will be painted black, with the numbers showing in white—the reverse of the present coloring. All present plates will be called in, and the new ones, making for clearer visibility, issued in their place.

ODDFELLOWS’ BALL.—The Centennial Hall on Friday night was taxed to its utmost, when the G.U.O. Oddfellows held their popular Ball. The annual reunion this year brought members and their friends from all the surrounding centres, and the function was voted one of the best held by this benefit Lodge for many years.

NERRIGUNDAH. (From our Correspondent.) A day’s sports was held on the local Recreation Grounds on Friday, 12th Inst., in aid of the Battery funds. The attendance was not as large as on previous occasions, but all events were competed for. Mr. Hutchinson, of Bodalla, acted as judge, and as usual gave entire satisfaction. There was a luncheon booth on the ground, conducted by Mrs Mather and Mrs Lawler, who served up an excellent hot dinner.

Mr. and Mrs Lake were down from Cobargo with a soft drinks and fruit stall, and Alex. Boyle also had a load of fruit.

In the Hunting Contest Mr. H. Duncan had a severe fall at one of the hurdles. The mare he was riding was a very cranky beast to handle, bucking and bounding all over the course, and it took a good horseman such as Harry is to be able to do anything with her. At the first jump she struck the hurdle and fell, breaking the girth, and the rider and saddle struck the ground together. Mr. Duncan was “knocked out” for a while, but soon recovered and returned home, all well excepting a severe shaking.

On the evening after the sports a plain and fancy dress ball was held in the School of Arts. The attendance was large and the door takings amounted to over £12. Mr. W. Sutherland filled the position of M.C. to the satisfaction of all present. There was a beautiful display of fancy dresses, for which there was a prize given. …

Same same, but different sees Terry and Amanda Fuller each express their shared love and value of nature in both 2D and 3D works.

Eurobodalla Council’s arts coordinator Indi Carmichael said the exhibiEon explored the similariEes in their work.

Broulee Runners Nov 18th 2020 This evening we had 28 actual runners in the 5 Vol 16 September 15th 2017 kilometres distance and 12 virtual runners. We 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 welcomed Jon Camilleri and Richard Scholes to their first run with the group. Richard is local Moruya athlete having competed in Hawaiian Ironman and Jon is a young runner, who competed with disEncEon over the 5-kilometre distance.

There were excellent performances with 7 personal best Emes. Those being Lauren Evans, Tom Hofsteede, Ashley Garland, Elisa Milenkovic, Bernie Lambert, Gillian Stapleton and Tori Hennig.

Special menEon for the performance of Lauren Evans, who cracked the 20-minute mark with a 21 second improvement. She was pushed to actual exhausEon by pacer MaN Johnsen.

“Expired flares are classified as Class 1 explosives under the Australian Dangerous Goods Code and require authorised disposal,” NSW MariEme ExecuEve Director Mark Hutchings said.

“Flares are to be used when you’re in trouble. They provide an exact locaEon for searching aircraK or vessels and they are only to be lit when rescuers are in view,” he said.

“Most flares have a use-by date of three years and they must be replaced before the expiry date, with penalEes applicable for those found to be using or carrying expired flares.

“This collecEon program provides the boaEng community with an opportunity to safely dispose of their out of date flares, parEcularly as flare collecEon is not permiNed at service centres, registries or mariEme sites.”

Mr Hutchings said flares were an important component of required safety equipment.

NSW MariEme BoaEng EducaEon Officers will be available to assist boaters at some of the flare collecEon points, with advice on flares and other safety equipment such as lifejacket servicing and to answer any quesEons about boaEng safety rules.

It was a great turnout for the Sailability Batemans Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Bay's Maintenance Day last 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Sunday.

Sailing is one of very few sports in which ablebodied and disabled sailors parEcipate on equal terms.

Sailability seeks to enrich the lives of people challenged by physical and/or intellectual disability, the elderly, and the ďŹ nancially and socially disadvantaged.

As with the rest of life, it has been a challenging year in many ways, not least, that our liNle eet of Hansa 303 dinghies, stable and purpose-built for disabled use, have been gathering dust rather than plying the Clyde at Nelligen.

With everything now checked and polished, our band of intrepid's will take to the water again for a Solo Sailing and Picnic Day. Everyone is welcome to come along, say hi, and see what Sailability is all about.

Due to restricEons and distancing, only members of the same family, or carers will be able to go '2 up' for the Eme being, in order to maintain everyone's safety on and o the water.

We meet at the Nelligen Boat Ramp, in Wharf St, from around 10:30 on Sunday December 6, to get rigged and ready.

One such tale evolved when Vicki Goodwin tee’d off on the 5th, a Par 3, but all too common to golfer’s lost sight of her ball. Vicki’s hopes of finding her ball faded quickly when the search revealed the ball appeared to have vanished. As a late aKerthought, the flag hole was checked and surprise, surprise si]ng snuggly on the noodle was Vicki’s ball. CongratulaEons Vicki on the wonderful achievement of your first “Hole in One”.

Meanwhile, quiet achiever Jan Lumsden was methodically hi]ng her way around the course culminaEng in an exemplary score of 43 neN, and Division 1 winner. Lyn Gibb was the well deserved runner-up with a splendid score of 37 neN on C/B. Division 2’s Judy Love conEnued on her winning streak scoring an impressive 39 neN, whilst runner-up Joanne Dixon maintained her focus throughout scoring a notable 36 neN. CATALINA LADIES GOLF - Results for Wednesday, 18 Nov 2020 There is a small invasion of pesky white cabbage moths or buNerflies on the golf course at the moment.

Their inability to differenEate between vegetaEon and golf balls is sadly lacking, parEcularly when they land on your golf ball in the middle of your swing. It’s either, curtains for that liNle creature or unfortunate for the compassionate golfer in miss hi]ng the ball! Despite these liNle hiccups, 71 ladies played a stableford event, with the Rogan Family (Mother and Daughter) individually scoring 38 points each and winning both Division 1 and Division 2. Jo Neal also recorded 38 points to win Division 3. Well done ladies. Broulee surYoat crews racing at Long Beach Broulee had three surdoat crews compete in Round Two of Vol 16 September 15th 2017 the South Coast2018 Surf2017 Boat Premiership last 28 December 7th, Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2019 weekend. Batemans Bay was the host club, and even aKer the carnival had to be moved to Long Beach because of a dangerous bar at Malua Bay, it was sEll the farthest south the compeEEon had travelled for a while.

The flat condiEons sparked a remark from a compeEng club that Broulee’s Canberra crews had brought Lake Burley Griffin condiEons with them, but it was the crews that could milk runs from the slight swell coming through that stole races.

The Men’s Vets crew, Mixed Grill, (Morgan Freemantle, Jeff Dunne, Steve Moore, Pete Shaw), had a clean sweep of all four rounds and the Women’s Vets crew, Griffin Braves (Robyn Trenton, Susan McKeag, Vikki Fischer, Brenda LoKhouse), won three. Both crews topped their divisions. The Capitals Women’s Reserve crew, Capitals (Jackie Jones, Annie McAppion, Claire Forbes), were also back on the water and made a good showing.

10th annual Hotondo Broulee Bay to Breakers Ocean Swim entries open The 10th annual Hotondo Broulee Bay to Breakers Swim is happening under a COVID Management Plan.

The Bay to Breakers Swim will be on Sunday 7 March 2021 and entries are now open from the Broulee Surfers SLSC Website. hNps://oceanswim.brouleesurfersslsc.org.au/ All pre-registraEons are guaranteed a full refund if the COVID-19 pandemic advice changes closer to the Swim. It is possible under the current health guidelines that there may be no on the day late registraEons.

Tuross Head Ladies Golf On Tuesday 17 November we had an impressive turn up of 27 ladies playing our weekly stableford compeEEon. We were also joined by lovely ladies visiEng from Moruya Golf Club.

Winners on the day were: A Grade: Gayle MacAlpine aKer returning from a break achieved an outstanding score of 40 points. The Runner-Up was Teri Swanbury with 37 points.

B Grade: Elsa Shearer with a score of 37 points from Ann Ware on 36 points.

C Grade: Club President Wendy Schmid with a score of 36 points, from Dianne O'Shea on 35 points.

The water is sEll running a liNle discoloured with the fresh water that conEnues to come down out of the hills, but the effect is starEng to diminish as the salt Vollevels 16 September 15th to 2017 are starEng increase with each Ede cycle. The lower areas of the river 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 are fishing the best at the moment, with the airport flats area, Preddy’s wharf area and behind the hole in the wall all showing marked signs of improvement.

There have been good flathead caught in all these areas, with the areas behind hole in the wall also showing signs of a few whiEng starEng to turn on. Surface lures can now be dusted off, hooks replaced and leaders reaNached for the start of some summer surface fun. We have plenty of opEons for all you surface fishos. Don’t be afraid to throw something seemly way too big, Bassday Suga Pens in the 120mm size have started to gain a bit of a cult following, and with good reason. We also have the 95mm size if the big ones are a bridge too far for you. Cast with the wind for increased casEng distance, don’t be afraid to use the wind to disguise your presence. WhiEng can be very spooky, so a bit of a broken surface generated by the wind, will get them to feed with a bit more confidence.

For those wanEng to use fresh locally caught live baits, the nipper beds around Garlandtown are sEll producing the goods, all be it in reduced numbers. It would seem all the fresh we have had lately, has had an effect on the numbers of nippers on the flats, take only what you need for your session, and leave the rest to repopulate the flats.

Tuross river.

There has been some nice sized Luderick right at the front of the Tuross system this week. Try off the rocks at the very mouth of the river, as the fresher slightly dirEer water has them schooling just inside the river mouth.

The flats around Potato Point have been showing good signs of some nice flathead and whiEng this week, as the river is starEng to normalise. As with Moruya, Tuross is improving with every Ede cycle.

In around four ways there have been some good flathead, bream and whiEng caught.

Further upstream around the Bodalla bridge the water is sEll fresh enough to drink, so it may take a liNle while for the salt to work its way that far upstream.

Rock and beach.

The salmon are back in good numbers from all reports, so much so that there has been a significant increase in shark numbers off the local beaches. By now, most of you will have seen the news footage, that brought the south coast a bit of aNenEon. Luckily these schools tend to move along fairly quickly. There may sEll be the odd one hanging around, so if you want to try and tempt a good size shark off the beach, now is as good a Eme as any.

The Moruya breakwall, has been fishing ok this week, but the beaches away from major rivers, have been fishing beNer. Try around the Congo Bingie areas for best success.

Local angler Liam Parsons managed a very respectable bream around the 40cm mark off the rocks last weekend.

Offshore.

There have been good snapper, flathead and gummies around this week for the crews ge]ng out the front. Try the usual spots around the 30-40m mark or the 50-60m mark for best results.

One of our locals reported having a great white shark claim his share, (a 100% share) of a gummy shark that was being brought in last week. Luckily for the angler he managed a few more gummies to take home for the freezer.

The tuna that were around, are now long gone, back out to the shelf areas most probably, it was fun for those who managed to get amongst them, while it lasted.

Keep your eyes peeled on your mail boxes, as our yearly Xmas catalogue is about to be delivered in the next week or so. Please be aware that the usual supply chains are severely tested at the moment, so even though we may have ordered it for the catalogue, there is a chance that we may not be able to get it for some Eme. The trout was caught by the boss this week whilst ge]ng a bit of fresh up on Eucumbene. This was before the wind near blew him back to the coast.

On another note, I’d like to say hi to the Crew of the Braidwood Fishing Club who asked if it was ok to share our weekly reports. We hope to see you guys and gals down here for a spot of salt from Eme to Eme. Stay safe everyone, and remember “every days a good day for fishing...”
