editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, This week saw another embarrassing revela=on that puts yet another thorn of the arse of our beloved Council with the admission, by the15th general Vol 16 September 2017manager, that our councillors were not fully advised of a material correspondence between the 28 December 7th, 2017 and Council in regards to the $70million Mackay Park project prior to their vote to endorse a Vol 48 April 27th 2018 Office Local Government 111of July 12th 2019 tenderer for the project and commit a substan=al amount of addi=onal funding.

The OLG correspondence, received two weeks prior to the councillors vo=ng to proceed with commiDng $19 million of ratepayer funds to fill The Gap between grants and the es=mated construc=on cost, clearly would have indicated the concerns that the OLG held around Council’s capacity to fund the future opera=ons and maintenance of the facility once it is opened.

The Council staff advised the councillors that the OLG assessment concluded that Council’s review met relevant criteria of the Guidelines (right) The statement in the red box (right), used in a report to councillors, came, in part, from a leIer from the OLG to the General Manager. But the full statement by the OLG was never made known to the Councillors or the Audit and Risk CommiIee. That correspondence actually added another paragraph (right) : During debate of July 28th 2020, the Councillors considered that they had been fully advised of everything they needed to know in order to vote. Under a GIPA request following that vote the provision of the OLG leIer and response from the GM proved that they had not been advised. The decision, made by a staff member, to not provide that leIer to councillors is of concern.

Clr Nathan said during the debate around the award of the tender and commiDng to the $19 million “We as the elected body have been thoroughly briefed,” indic=ng that she knew everything to make an informed decision.

Clr Pollock added during debate “There is nothing more to be placed to the Audit and Risk CommiIee for them to make a more informed decision than they have already provided”. Yet the Audit and Risk CommiIee had not been provided the leIer either.

During debate, and prior to the final vote, the Mayor said “Ul=mately, what the community knows is what the community knows. What concerns me is what you, myself and my fellow councillors know. Because we are the ones who need to have all the informa=on in front of us to make a decision on behalf of those who have democra=cally elected us to make decisions on their behalf. ” This was stated with the General Manager siDng right beside her knowing that the Councillors and Audit Risk CommiIee had NOT been provided a copy of the OLG leIer that advised that Council SHOULD also consider the risks to projected revenue of both the facility and Council. But vote they did and they were played for fools.

Will they take any ac=on now this has been revealed? No, once again they will be too gutless to act.

and visitors to the Eurobodalla saying a new waterside walking trail is on the way.

"Thanks to the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund, co-funded by the NSW and Australian Governments, we’ve announced $5.2m to help deliver the Batemans Bay Coastal Headlands Walking Trail."

"The funding will help with the construc=on of a 30km accessible walking track, star=ng at Observa=on Point in Batehaven - where a new lookout will be built - and stretching south along the headlands to PreIy Point near Mackenzies Beach "We know the Eurobodalla is home to some of the state’s most beau=ful beaches and coastlines. And we’ll soon have yet another reason for visitors to come, stay a liIle longer and spend money in our local businesses". Council advise that the coastal walking trail linking the headlands and beaches of Batemans Bay's southern shoreline, including construc=on of a lookout at Observa=on Point in Batehaven will be funded from $5.25M from the Commonwealth and NSW Government’s Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund, $672,000 from Building BeIer Regions Fund, $145,000 from Bushfire Regional Tourism Fund, $75,000 from Stronger Country Communi=es Fund, along with contribu=ons from Rotary Club and Council.

Council say they will deliver a coastal walking trail to further enhance the area as a nature-based holiday des=na=on.

The Batemans Bay coastal headlands walking trail will be a 33km con=nuous walking track linking headlands and beaches, star=ng from a new lookout at Observa=on Point in Batehaven and stretching to PreIy Point at McKenzies Beach. The trail is also proposed to connect the retail centres of Batehaven, Surf Beach and Malua Bay with the broader network of walking and cycling trails at Batehaven and Batemans Bay. Council say "The trail will be easy to navigate and feature interpre=ve signage, Aboriginal and European cultural and historical referencing, and viewing spots. It can be experienced as a single day walk or short walks over mul=ple days, linking into the popular Na=onal Parks four-day signature Murramarang walk."

"The project aims to grow the visitor economy by aIrac=ng a highvalue demographic for longer stays. This tourism product will aid bushfire recovery and level out Eurobodalla's seasonality with a year-round aIrac=on that isn't beach dependent. The trail is forecast to aIract around 26,000 visitors a year. and the direct spending associated with these visitors is approximately $0.4 million per year."

In the north there is Vene=an Coffee in Batemans Bay who roast their own coffee and currently provide nineteen different blends. Moruya is well serviced with Guerrilla Roasters and Alfresco Coffee with their own blends of fresh, locally roasted specialty coffees sourced from around the world.

It is of liIle surprise that many of our local cafes source their beans from these local roasters. But there is more to coffee and that is where a good barista comes in - able to deliver the coffee you order. Addi/onal bridge li3 for Batemans Bay Bridge this weekend Saturday between 8 and 9am Vol 16 September 15th 2017 The remaining barge 28 December 7th, 2017 used for marine construc=on of the Batemans Bay Bridge replacement will leave Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

the Clyde River this weekend.

The community is advised of an addi=onal opening of the Batemans Bay Bridge on the morning of Saturday 14 November to allow the barge to pass through.

A liX opening is scheduled for between 8am and 9am, weather permiDng, and will take up to 20 minutes.

This ac=vity is required to take place during this =meframe to take advantage of favourable =dal condi=ons to safely transport the barge.

The liX will allow the barge to pass under the exis=ng bridge before it is transported north to Sydney.

The barge, named AMS 1807, housed a crane, workers and other materials used to build the new bridge piers.

All vessel operators in the area should exercise extreme cau=on, keep a proper lookout and comply with local buoyage and signage.

The liX will take up to 20 minutes, and motorists will experience delays along the Princes Highway, the Kings Highway and other local roads.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to plan their journeys, allow addi=onal travel =me and follow the bridge signals.

If condi=ons are not suitable for the liX, the community will be no=fied of a new date and =me.

“It can be quite in=mida=ng to apply for job in the health sector but the Jobs Drive will help break down barriers for people who might think it’s too difficult, or that they’re not qualified,” she said.

“If you need a job, come along – even if you don’t think you’re qualified. You’ll get to meet employers face-to-face and hand them your resume on the day, giving you the opportunity to make a good impression and avoiding what is some=mes a lengthy applica=on process.”

Ms Kovacs said the Jobs Drive benefiIed local employers, too.

“The sector ordinarily always looking for staff is in fact now looking for even more staff due to COVID,” she said.

“Anyone who is looking for any type of posi=on - part =me, casual and full=me, entry level or specialised, should come along - don’t be afraid if you don’t have a qualifica=on.”

community Eurobodalla Council is focusing its energy on helping residents correctly dispose of the humble household baIery for Na=onal Recycling Week.

The theme for Na=onal Recycling Week this year is ‘Recovery – a future beyond the bin’, which urges Australians to reduce virgin resource use, reuse and recycle.

BaIeries should never be placed in household bins and can only be recycled through special collec=on points.

In transport, processing and in landfill, baIeries can and have caused fires if they leak, are compacted and/or are inadvertently heated.

Council’s waste educa=on officer Gillian Kearney said baIeries contained hazardous residual materials, which must be kept out of landfill to limit exposure to the environment.

“Used baIeries can contain a variety of rare and valuable earth elements such as lead, cadmium, nickel, zinc, silver, manganese and even mercury,” she said.

“These elements are non-renewable in nature - throwing them away is such a waste. By recycling the baIeries these finite resources can be recovered.”

Free household baIery recycling drop-off points are located at the Eurobodalla libraries, at the waste management facili=es at Surf Beach, Brou and Moruya, at the Batemans Bay Community Centre and at Council’s administra=on building in Moruya.

Residents can pick up a free mini baIery collec=on box, provided by the NSW Environment Protec=on Authority, for storing used baIeries at home un=l they’re ready to be dropped off for recycling at any of the local drop-off points.

Ms Kearney said Eurobodalla’s kerbside recycling efforts helped divert almost 5,000 tonnes per year of material otherwise des=ned for landfill.

“These items can then be remade into products that would otherwise needed to have been sourced from virgin material,” Ms Kearney said.

“This saves on finite resources including water, minerals and metals, as well as energy.”

Grow to give to fire-affected neighbours Eurobodalla residents are being asked to ‘Grow to Give’ to Vol 16 September 15ththeir 2017gardens in the fires. residents who lost 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 The project encourages residents to grow na=ve plants and seedlings to give to bushfire-affected community members in December.

You can drop off plants at the main entrance to the Bas, at the corner of Vulcan and Murray Sts, on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 December, between 2pm and 4pm.

Those needing the plants can pick them up in the same place between 12pm and 4pm on either Monday 21, Tuesday 22 or Wednesday 23 December.

Bush-friendly gardens help in recovery of our pollinators Bees play a vital role in the recovery process aXer bushfires and droughts. Australian Pollinator Week (8— 15 November 2020) acknowledges our important and unique insect pollinators during our southern spring (November). It is a designated week when community, business and organisa=ons can come together to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators and support their needs. The Australian Pollinator Week online plaZorm went live this week, following a three-month program rebrand. With the goal of growing pollinator awareness and outreach ac=vi=es across Australia, the event plaZorm boasts a fresh new image for Australian Pollinator Week.

“We wanted to develop a clean new look with a simple logo that could become synonymous with all pollinators” said Dr. Megan HalcroX, Founder of Australian Pollinator Week at this week’s launch. “So It seemed appropriate for pollen to become the central focus”.

Whilst the origins of Australian Pollinator Week are deeply rooted in a love for na=ve Australian bees, Australian Pollinator Week seeks to be a celebra=on of all pollinators. Whether they are insect or non-insect pollinators, Australian Pollinator Week seeks to grow community understanding of the importance of caring for pollinators and the ecosystems where they live.

Libraries survey on the books Eurobodalla Council is looking to improve its library services and asking members for their Vol 16 September 15th is 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 thoughts.

111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Almost 42 per cent of the shire’s popula=on 16,869 people - are members of either the Batemans Bay, Moruya or Narooma library.

Libraries coordinator Samantha Fenton said she was keen to hear from a broad range of community members via an online survey, which will help provide direc=on for future service planning.

She said that by filling out the survey library members could go into the draw to win a $100 giX card.

“We want to hear the opinions of people, not just the regular library users but also those who don’t use it as oXen and why,” Ms Fenton said.

“The survey will inform our decision making in terms of where we priori=se our efforts - for example whether people are s=ll sa=sfied with our collec=on, or whether they want to see more events.”

More than just books, the library also offers access to a wealth of ebooks, audiobooks and e-magazines, as well as journals and research tools, DVDs and events.

Ms Fenton said feedback in the past had shown print collec=ons remained a high priority and that the community felt a strong sense of ownership of library spaces.

“We also know that libraries connect communi=es and reduce social isola=on,” she said.

“Libraries are a great place to come and feel a sense of belonging to something. Our focus is on trying to build on that sense of community and libraries being a place where people can feel included.”

NSW SES Batemans Bay Unit report: Essen=al Road Crash Rescue Training with SES Batemans Bay and the Rural Fire Service, Surf Beach Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Unit was conducted on Tuesday night the 11th of 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 November . This is a fantas=c community partnership with amazing skills from both teams clearly on display.

Road Crash Rescue is a specialised and extensive course which requires our teams to undergo extensive training to meet the demanding skills required to undertake such rescues.

The training includes handling of specialist equipment, scene assessment, safety vehicle management, vehicle stabilisa=on, casualty assessment and then sequence the removal of major vehicle sec=ons (e.g doors, roof).

This gives both teams an opportunity to train and work collabora=vely in this training exercise. The training followed Covid 19 protocols.

Take the pledge for road safety week Local emergency services have joined forces ahead of Na=onal Road Safety Week next week to urge local motorists to commit to safe Vol 16 September 15th 2017 driving.

Na=onal Road Safety Week asks motorists to pledge to drive as if their loved ones are on the road ahead, to remove all distrac=ons and never use a phone while driving, to not put other people at risk by speeding, driving while =red or under the influence of alcohol/drugs, and to protect all vulnerable road users, especially those whose job places them in harm’s way, by slowing down and giving them the space they need to be safe.

Emergency services fleets including ambulance, fire trucks and police cars in Eurobodalla will display yellow ribbons for Na=onal Road Safety Week, while residents can pick up road safety goodies from either Batemans Bay, Moruya or Narooma Library.

BROULEE SURF CLUB SEEK CATERER AS CLUB UNDERGOES MAJOR UPGRADE The Broulee Surfers Surf Life Saving Club is undergoing a major upgrade, thanks to funding from the NSW and Federal Governments.

Funding that was announced in 2018 and 2019 is enabling the club house to expand with a larger func=on room, third storey patrol observa=on tower, a new first aid room, and disabled, female and male change rooms and showers. Construc=on is set to get underway very soon on the upgrade, with the club currently closed to the public.

Club secretary Andrew Edmunds said the redevelopment was an exci=ng =me for the club.

“We are looking forward to the project being completed in early 2021,” he said.

“For the first =me in our 40 year history we will have dedicated separate change facili=es for disabled, male and female members,” he said.

“We will have a larger first aid room to treat pa=ents and increased visibility of the beach will assist us in keeping the public safe.”

Mr Edmunds said the club house became a place of refuge during the New Years Eve Bushfires, and thanks to the upgrades would have improved facili=es for the community to benefit from.

As part of the redevelopment, the club will also be providing space in the club for a café/kiosk operator.

“We’ve had some great people in the past run a kiosk for the enjoyment of our members and the public alike, and we’re looking forward to our new facility opening soon.”

“We will be offering a long term sub-lease of up to 10 years – which is a preIy exci=ng business opportunity.

“We hope that the successful operator would also be able to provide services to private and club func=ons such as presenta=ons, weddings, training days and so on.”

16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 This award is in remembrance of past member Ellinor, who was a very ac=ve and suppor=ve of Narooma branch, CWA in general and Narooma community.

There is no big prize but it recognises a member who has shown the quali=es of CWA. Other members nominate the awardee and Jenny Dickson was the choice in 2020. Jenny has been an ac=ve member for over 20 years and among her other virtues, is a maker of scones extraordinaire.

BATEHAVEN—the new Heart of The Bay

Batehaven rises to be the new Heart of the Bay With it becoming evident that the Batemans Bay CBD is quickly being overtaken by non-commercial enterprise. Once vacant shopfronts are now being leased at top dollar to agencies such as the Department of Educa=on (old Target premises) and more recently HeadSpace and the NBN taking new premises in the Vol 16popular September 15th 2017sec=on of Clyde Street. With the off ramp from the Clyde Bridge temporarily closed once foreshore 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 (before being permanently closed in 2023) it is not surprising that locals are moving away from the overdeveloped foreshore looking for a new community friendly area for their weekend enjoyment. Batehaven, having now been bypassed by George Bass Drive, has been allowed to return to being the quiet coastal village of yesteryear, accessible by foot or bike making it family focussed it is delivering the quali=es that a community want.

The CBD will remain as being the place for primary groceries via Woolies, Coles and Aldi but the market place has changed since Covid with so many of us educated to buying on line. With major stores such as Target and Rivers closing their doors and with so many vacant shops in Batemans Bay the appeal it once had is diminishing and many believe will accelerate when the four lane bypass off the new bridge arrives sending visitors south to Beach Road or further on to the Spine Road. But like a lotus rises from the mire Batehaven is a shining example that the south coast s=ll maintains the intrinsic quali=es of place we all enjoy with Moruya as another example of community cohesion.

The very popular Batehaven Thursday Growers Market, that was transplanted from the Batemans Bay Community Centre when they were told to vacate, is just one of the many aspects that have seen Batehaven flourish. This weekend will see the market place shine with music, arts, craXs, plants and food with a spill over into the adjacent cafes and shops. Sunday will see the markets return to Corrigans Reserve across the road and summer will see the wonderful Variety Park come alive. The recent sealing of road shoulders by Council has also extended the cycleway through the village to Caseys beach and the proposed Eurobodalla Walking Trail will start at Batehaven making its way south along the coast. Adding to the cultural component for Batehaven is the very successful Thursday Garden Poets.

The dream of Variety Park is to add a free splash pad that would compliment the incredible all-abili=es park that has built on Corrigans Reserve. While it was ini=ally endorsed by Council they had a change of mind and decided they would add a pay-for-use splashpad in the new Mackay Park pool. This announcement came as a disappointment to those who had lobbied and gained widespread support for the free Corrigan loca=on.

That dream s=ll remains however and with a new council there might be a change of heart.

Over past number of weeks, the Narooma & District Lions Club have Vol 16the September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 been running an on-line wine drive as a fund raising enterprise towards the purchase of a new BBQ Trailer. Given the Bush Fires early in 2020 and then COVID restrictions putting paid to face-to-face fundraising for many months, a safe and productive form of maintaining let alone increasing Club funds needed to be found.

It was literally mulling over this problem with a glass of wine that the light bulb moment hit. Yours truly did some quick research and the idea became a reality. Since then, our friends near and far have supported us, with Bankstown Sport being counted as one of them. The chance of having a very merry Christmas while suppor=ng your local Lions Club is now drawing to a close on Monday 16th November.

Ah well, a lifetime of 85 years isn’t so bad.

Truth is, as a species we are totally hooked on the idea that somehow we can see into the future and that’s never going to change. We should explore exactly why this is so. But first to the latest ‘failure’ of the American pollsters to predict the results of the presidential election.

I was fortunate to be a Facebook friend of the former Canberra Senator, Labor Minister and ALP National Secretary, Bob McMullan who was in the US throughout the campaign. Bob had been involved with polls ever since he ran Labor’s Federal elections in the 1980s, so he knew their strengths and weaknesses. Each week, he would brief us on the latest polling with a cautionary reminder of their limitations. But the message was clear: Joe Biden would trounce Donald Trump with a nationwide lead of between five and eight percent.

The so-called ‘battleground states’ were also looking good. And though in the last couple of weeks as Trump rampaged through them with up to six rallies a day meant there was a ‘tightening’ of the numbers, they were still indicating a comfortable Biden victory. Yet somehow, neither I nor several other ‘friends’ were convinced.

It wasn’t just the memory of Hillary Clinton’s defeat four years ago when they were not so favourable to the Democrat. Now Joe was in his basement; Trump had the momentum; and his supporters wouldn’t necessarily tell the pollsters the truth.

Nevertheless, when the early results arrived, we were appalled. As Trump himself said later, he was about to celebrate his victory with a lead of 700,000 in Pennsylvania alone. But there was something the commentators had not mentioned till then: the Biden voters got in early and their votes wouldn’t be counted till after those registered at polling places on the day.

That made all the difference and the psychological shock hit Trump harder than anyone. That, I suspect, is the real reason he’s found it almost impossible to accept reality. It also explains part of the explosion of relief and joy among younger Democrats.

In the end, the polls got the win right but not the extent of it. And they will live to fight another day, and another, ad infinitum because we are obsessed with the future. Our stock exchanges cater to the trillions of dollars bet each day on the future – from the tiniest currency variations in milliseconds to the fate of wheat crops months away in distant lands. Canberra’s august CityNews, even in desperate Covid times when space is cut to the bone, still devotes an entire third of a page to a column predicting ‘Your week in the stars’.

Indeed, the great attraction of most religions is the ‘promise’ that there is a future after death. And billions believe it without the slightest evidence to back their claims. Yet in America, Democrat lawyers are arguing Trump’s claims of election fraud should be thrown out because they have no basis in fact.

Maybe this is what they mean by ‘alternative truths’.

Volsaid 48 111April July 12th 2019 It’s that27th the2018 defini=on of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expec=ng a different result.

We got hammered by last year’s bushfires, we’ve just re-entered the bushfire season, and what are we doing that’s different? Nothing immediately apparent. Is that wise? Is that enough? Yes, we do have a few things on our side. There's less to burn, but s=ll plenty. We are expec=ng a damper summer, but that just means more fuel growth for following years. Meanwhile every summer gets hoIer and longer, due to the currently unstoppable march of climate change. As temperatures go up, the drying goes up, the wind speeds go up, and the probability of another disastrous fire season goes up drama=cally. This is not a =me to be complacent. This is a =me for ac=on. Possibly the last opportunity.

What did we learn?

Clearly, we were totally outgunned by the 2019/20 fires. ESC Council website tells us that in Eurobodalla, bushfires destroyed 461 homes, 76 facili=es, and 716 outbuildings, with damage sustained to a further 226 houses, 27 facili=es and 224 outbuildings. Consider the cost in dollar terms of these losses. Now, add the costs in human and animal terms. And all this, despite having RFS fire sta=ons in every town, and some aerial resources. It clearly wasn’t anywhere near enough. If we do the maths, we can see why it isn’t enough.

Taking Malua Bay as our example, the local RFS brigade has three trucks, but has to cover 133 or more streets. Ignoring for the moment that two of the trucks were out-of-area on the morning of New Year’s Eve, baIling for Mogo and Nelligen. Even if we had 6 or even 10 trucks in area, the chances of one of them being in your street during an event like this are s=ll very slim. And outside your door when you need them even less. That’s not a denial of their value. It’s just recogni=on that, in a situa=on like this, they can’t be everywhere at once. They have to gravitate towards where they can be most effec=ve.

A second line of defence So what do you do when the fires overwhelm or sneak by your first defenders? Give up and let it all burn, like what happened this =me? No! We need to mount a secondary line of defence, complimentary to but different from the first line of defence. The RFS is small in number, so this has to be large in number. The RFS is a highly mobile force, so this should be a focus-on-the-street force. The RFS is expensive to equip and run, this needs to be more economical, but s=ll effec=ve. It needs to pack value for money.

A model already exists – the Community Fire Units (CFUs) set up in the ACT and many parts of NSW aXer the devasta=ng 2003 Canberra fire. There are over 650 of these units, involving over 7000 volunteer members.

Some are as close to us as Merimbula. Essen=ally, CFUs comprise groups of residents, trained and equipped to protect their street should fire get past the first defenders and endanger lives and property.

The equipment isn’t exo=c – it might just be some Personal Protec=ve Equipment (PPE) to help keep them safe, some fire hoses and fiDngs to enable them to fight the fire, standpipes to access hydrants, a firepump if tankwater or swimming pool water is available but mains power or town water pressure cannot be guaranteed.

And perhaps a trailer to keep it all in and make it easy to relocate for best effect when say the wind changes, as it did so drama=cally this =me. And perhaps you don’t have to have a CFU in every street? If you were priori=sing, streets like ours on the urban/rural fringe would seem to stand out. Lets make the stand there.

Don’t let the fire into the suburbs. By then we’ve lost. At least equally important is the training. CFU members need to be taught how to tackle fire, how to operate the equipment, what dangers to look out for, how to assess and report the situa=on, and so on. Nobody should be expected to face down a threatening fire without having had the confidence-building experience of proper training and the opportunity of tackling one under controlled circumstances. ………………………….con=nues beagle weekly : Vol 181 November 13th 2020

An informal trial I have good reasons to believe in the CFU model. Back on New Years Eve 2019, we stayed to defend our Malua Bay urban/bush interface home, confident that we were well prepared (10,000L of water, a petrol fire pump, 3 fire hoses that could be used separately or joined end-for-end for greater reach). We had good Vol 16 September 15ththe 2017 reasons to believe property was defendable, or that, in the worst case, we could safely shelter and 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 escape aXer the firefront passed. We soon found we were unexpectedly in the midst of an informal Community Fire Unit thrown together by chance for the occasion.

All were residents in the street, apart from three who were sons of residents. Four - us and two of the sons - had prior RFS experience, the others were handy, confident people. We quickly agreed on arrangements and protocols. We would work as a pack, iden=fying and servicing the point of greatest need. Strident blowing of car horns would alert us to dangers and needs. (By now, all comms – mobile phones, landline phones, internet and radio – were out.)

What our informal CFU faced on the day and dealt with As the fire approached, we tried going forward with mops, buckets and two backpack sprayers, but couldn't get near enough because of the intense heat. We were forced back. But once the fire had swung round to behind our place, within range of our 3 fire hoses (NOT the garden hoses!), we had the upper hand. We set up southerly and easterly containment lines, policed those and then systema=cally blacked out everything we could get to beyond them. That did require hacking through the dense undergrowth with a machete.

And geDng up through several nights to deal with flareups….

In the following days, a helicopter water-bomber and Malua Bay RFS arrived to control the bits beyond where our hoses could reach. Stumps were s=ll burning there, at risk of flaring up in a wind change. Our bit was already fully blacked out and needed no further aIen=on. But it had required the combina=on of willing, capable, confident, knowledgeable people, and adequate and appropriate equipment. Neither was enough by itself. Sounds like the very defini=on of a CFU

What our “informal CFU” faced on the day, and dealt with.

Make haste slowly But should we race out, invest in and dump 133 trailer loads of CFU equipment onto an unsuspec=ng public? (Keeping in mind that that would only be enough for one in every street in Malua Bay, not the rest of Eurobodalla!) That might be a bit pre-emp=ve, and poten=ally wasteful. I think we should move quickly, but prudently.

I’m calling for the establishment of a Council-based CFU Working Group to inves=gate and advance this no=on. Like any well-formed working group, it should have representa=on of all stakeholders, which in this case I’d suggest includes: - Council, who I’d hope would take a construc=ve advocacy role, and who would offer to provide administra=ve support for the Working Group during the establishment and trial phase.

- NSW Fire & Rescue, the agency responsible for urban areas, and the tradi=onal agency behind CFU deployments - RFS, the agency responsible for “rural areas” such as Malua Bay. The RFS does service some CFUs but not in this area so far.

- A selec=on of residents interested in being involved, ideally drawn from a range of areas within Eurobodalla (one size probably doesn’t fit all). I would hope to be one of those resident representa=ves.

- Others, to be determined as we progress.

What do I expect?

I'm hoping that this proposal for trialling CFUs in our region will be taken seriously and put to the test, or be rejected on good, compelling, damning evidence. I'm not interested in promo=ng something that won't work, but I'm not prepared to give up without trying. Judging from their long and con=nuing investment in them, Fire & Rescue NSW and the ACT Government have a lot of faith in the CFU approach, so why shouldn't we?

And if this proposal doesn't provide the clearly needed second line of defence, we need to press on to find out what will. We don't want a repeat of New Year's Eve, 2019. Ever.

Conclusion I reckon we only have a few years at most before the overhea=ng climate, increasing fuel loads and narrowing windows for hazard reduc=ons conspire to throw us another live grenade. Now is the =me to start preparing. We saw how easily the front can overwhelm and get past the first defenders, especially because their numbers and resources are so slim, and our urban/bush interface is so large.

We need a second line of defence, and, as best as I can see at this /me, that is the Community Fire Unit. I remain happy to consider any alterna/ve or varia/on.

When George Bass came to Potato Point 1797.

The white man's 'great bird' brought terror to Tuross Aborigines - By NOEL WARRY TRAVELLING south during an expedi=on which resulted in the discovery 'of Port Phillip Bay, George Bass stayed overnight at Tuross.

On the evening of Saturday, December 16, 1797, his whale boat stood off a point of land which he named Marka Point, the place now known as Potato Point. The next day he landed and walked to what we call Tuross Lake. For someone on his way to test the existence or otherwise of a sea lane between the Pacific and Indian oceans, this break in his journey was but an interlude. He recorded that the area was waterless and empty of human inhabitants.

However, to the people whose territory it was, the arrival of a whale boat under sail was a most drama=c event. FiXy years later, when Cooral, an Aboriginal friend, told it to him, a resident of Moruya wrote their version down.

When George Bass and his crew dropped anchor, Cooral, then a young boy, was asleep with his tribe on the cliff above the beach. At dawn, when everybody woke up, they were dismayed to see an enormous white thing just out to sea, its wings spread as if for flight. AXer a hasty discussion they decided that a monster bird of some unearthly kind had come to pick them up like a hawk does its prey.

They fled in terror. They did not stop un=l they sank exhausted in a gully of the stony creek near what we call Coila. Even there they did not feel safe, for who knew if the great white bird was not hovering above them ready to strike, and they had nothing with which to defend themselves. In their panic they had leX all their possessions, all their weapons and their food, behind them on the cliff top. The elders were the first to think beyond fright. They decided that a look-out should be posted to watch the lake and the bravest of the tribe should go back to see what had happened at their camp site.

While everyone else crouched in silence, =red and hungry, a courageous liIle group returned to the sea.

Concealing themselves," they paused near the Springs and scanned the horizon.There was nothing unusual to see. The monster was no longer there. AXer much debate they agreed they should walk along the beach to see if the great winged thing had molested their camp site.

Creeping cau=ously along the high =de mark they bunched together when their leader suddenly stopped.

On the sand were unmistakable signs of a canoe of some strange make having been pulled out of the water. Stranger s=ll, there were prints of human feet and beagle weekly : Vol 181 November 13th 2020

Reading—history beside them others so weird as to be unbelievable. Footprints of two-legged creatures, without toes, prints such as they had never seen before. Despite their fear they tracked the prints of the toeless creatures. But when the prints led towards the place where the tribe was hiding their dread intensiďŹ ed. The one thought that now possessed their minds was that some further horror had come among them. With all speed they Vol 16 September 15th 2017 hastened warn 28 December 7th, 2017the others.

Vol 48 27th 2018 111April Julyback 12thto 2019 This further news caused more consterna=on and panic. Not only was the tribe at the mercy of a great bird which might swoop down on them at any moment, but now mysterious toeless beings were coming towards them on land. They spent the day crouched under the trees. At night they huddled together for warmth.

They had no ďŹ re, no food, no possum rugs to cover themselves and no weapons with which to defend" themselves. It is no wonder that an old man could remember with such detail all that happened during that terrible =me. He could not recall how long they stayed there, but at last hunger and cold won over terror.

The brave ones once more went back to the camp.

At last they reached the campsite. Nothing seemed to have been touched. Food and dilly bags s=ll hung from the trees, weapons and rugs lay about undisturbed. They hastened to tell the others. Slightly reassured but s=ll fearful, the tribe went back. They ate, collected their possessions, and then moved to another place. The big white bird was never seen again and there were no more sigh=ngs of toeless footprints. Life gradually returned to normal. By the =me Cooral and his peers aIained manhood they had heard of similar happenings far to their north and of the coming of the spirits of men, turned white.

TRUE CHRISTIANITY.– When it became known that Mr. Harvison, auctioneer, Moruya, was in Hospital under a most serious and painful operation, those big-hearted auctioneers. Messrs. M. and J. O’Reilly, of Cobargo, at once wrote to his representative offering to undertake, at their own expense, all sales entrusted to him in any part of the district. Messrs. H. J. Thomson and Bede Heffernan made a similar kind offer. This is what we call true Christianity.

CHURCH OF ENGLAND TENNIS CLUB.—This Club, which is also to have a junior branch for young people between the ages of 11 and 16, was formed at a well attended meeting on Tuesday night. Officers elected are— President, the Rector; Committee, Mrs. Ison, Mrs. Cheesman, Mr. Garrard and Mr. Isorf; Hon. Sec. and Treas., Mr. Jermyn. The annual membership fee was fixed at—gents 15/-, ladies 7/6, juniors and non playing members 5/-. The court is to be open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays for Juniors and Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for adults. It was decided to have membership in the club open to all, and not to limit it to attendants at St. John’s Church.

MORUYA PARK.—A meeting of the Trustees of the Moruya Park was held at their rooms on Tuesday night. Thee were present Messrs.

Harvison (chair), R.B. Heffernan, P.J. Gannon and A.F. Emmott, the secretary, Mr. J. McKeon, having sent a letter explaining his absence through a sprained ankle. Mr. Gannon, who was appointed to act as secretary for the meeting, read the minutes of previous meeting, which were adopted. In consequence of the lessee having householders’ stock out of the Park, notifying them that he wished to spell it for a short time, and householders’ objections to same, it was decided to write to the lessee drawing his attention to the condition embodied in his lease, that resident householders has the right to depasture one working horse and one milking cow on the Park on payment in advance of 1/6 and 1/- respectively. An application from Mrs. Atfield for permission to remove, at his own expense, a large tree growing in the Park, near her residence, was received. It was decided to allow this matter to stand over until the Trustees had inspected the tree, which is in dangerous proximity to the piggeries and show yards.

Mr. Harvison was empowered to get the pink gate repaired as soon as possible.

When bushfires ripped through Cobargo in the early hours of the morning on New Year’s Eve, some lost houses, others lost family members and all have a story to tell about that day.

Together, along with the help of their teacher Campbell Kerr, Cobargo Public’s Year Five and Six class have told their story – writing and illustrating a book titled ‘The Day She Stole the Sun.’ “I hope the book is read by people in the city, so they understand what the bushfires were like, and also in other small towns who were burnt, because they will relate to it.” Lila Herring (above left) “I hope the Prime Minister reads the book. I want him to think that when he came here first, (in the days after the bushfire) that was not the real us. Coordinator, around 12 hours a week.

This includes every Tuesday afternoon at the market, Friday and Wednesday mornings to administer the e -Market, and other times at your convenience for general administration such as emails, calls, messages, banking, managing spreadsheets, and promotion. The Market Coordinator is the central contact for the market.

You will need good customer service, organisational and administration skills and be comfortable working online with emails, spreadsheets, and websites. Social media experience would be an advantage.

Some days you may need to be able to juggle a few things at once and deal with unexpected emergencies!

The job is offered on a contract arrangement and you will need an ABN, mobile phone, computer, driver’s license and your own vehicle to carry banners and the marquee. You will need to be able to erect a small marquee, put up banners and carry some boxes.

You will invoice SAGE with an agreed hourly rate, and there is a weekly incentive for the number of stalls at each market.

The position is available for an immediate start.

Food Why Go Vegan?

November 10, 2020 by Bev Dunne This November is World Vegan Month and with that in mind, I thought it a great opportunity to write about veganism and exactly what veganism means. Although Vol 16 September 15th 2017 veganism has become more popular in recent times, 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 2018 111April July 12th 2019 The Vegan Society was in fact established in 1944, with the purpose of increasing awareness of, and encouraging a diet and lifestyle which would benefit humans, animals and our environment.

There are several reasons why someone decides to follow a plant-based lifestyle. For some it is for health reasons, however for many it is for ethical and compassionate reasons. By not eating animal-derived foods such as fish, meat, dairy and bee products, it is making a choice to support animals. This choice also includes choosing to purchase products such as cosmetics, clothing, shoes, bags, belts etc which are not derived from animals.

For some it is about taking a stand to support our planet. It is believed farming for meat production, especially if it is factory farmed, is not environmentally friendly. It is thought commercial meat production may be one of the main reasons for climate change.

A plant-based diet is often known for its many health benefits.

Because a vegan diet is high in plant-based foods and precludes animal products such as meat, cheese and butter which are the main dietary sources of saturated fats, it’s thought to be beneficial in reducing the risk of heart disease and death in adults. Plant-based foods are also obviously higher in fibre which can be beneficial for better heart health plus they are lower in calories which reduces the risk of obesity. Following a plant-based vegan diet including fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes and wholegrains is also believed to lower the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Because plant-based foods are higher in phytochemicals, vitamins and fibre, it is also believed a vegan diet may also lower the risk of cancer.

For many of us undertaking a plant-based diet will mean we will maintain a lower body mass (BMI) index which of course will mean better health outcomes. Replacing animal source foods with low calorie plant-based foods is going to be beneficial in losing and managing our weight.

There are so many food options available these days if we are wanting to undertake a plant-based vegan diet. Our online store has pages and pages of products. There are dairy alternatives for cheeses, butters, yoghurts and ice creams. There are many sources of plant-based proteins and so many yummy recipes available to try. Undertaking a plant-based diet doesn’t mean you are going to be living on carrot and celery sticks!!

There are however certain nutrients which may not be as prevalent in a vegan diet. It is therefore important to be mindful of how we ensure we don’t miss out on these nutrients. Some of these nutrients are Iron. The first nutrient which comes to mind when precluding meat from our diet, is iron. There are however many vegetables which contain iron. Spinach, dried apricots, amaranth, dried legumes all contain considerable amounts of iron. Blackstrap molasses is a good source of iron. We can also assist our absorption of iron by eating foods which are high in Vitamin C such as kiwi fruit, citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes and leafy green vegetables. Often it can be helpful to take an iron supplement. It is important to ensure an iron tablet contains other cofactors such as Vitamins C and B to ensure absorption.

Vitamin B12. This B vitamin is primarily available through animal products and protects our nervous system and red blood cells. Nutritional yeast which I have written about previously and is often used in vegetarian and vegan recipes, contains vitamin B12. I would however suggest taking a B12 supplement if you are following vegan diet. Methyl B12 is the most active form of B12 and is believed to be more readily absorbed and retained in our tissues. It is utilised more efficiently by our brain, nervous system and liver.

Calcium. We know calcium is important for our bone health however precluding dairy products is not going to be a beagle weekly : Vol 181 November 13th 2020

Food problem as including leafy greens, tahini and tofu are all calcium rich vegan foods. Chia seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, dried figs, and dried white beans all contain calcium. If you wish to take a calcium supplement, I would suggest a plant-based calcium capsule derived from red algae.

Zinc. We need zinc for skin, tissue repair and wound healing as well as support for our immune system. Zinc can be Vol 16 September 15th 2017 found inApril nutritional 28 December 7th,yeast, 2017 seeds, nuts, dried beans, oats and wheatgerm.

Vol 48 111 July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Omega 3 Fatty Acids. When we think of Omega 3, we usually think of fish oil, however Omega 3 Fatty acids can we found in seeds such as chia, hemp and flax. Walnuts are another great source. It is also possible to supplement with plant-based omega 3 capsules containing organic marine microalgae.

MINI VEGAN FRITTATAS PREP TIME 20 minutes SERVES: Makes 12 COOK TIME 45 minutes DIFFICULTY Easy INGREDIENTS 1¾ cups Organic Road Besan Flour ¼ cup Natural Road Savoury Yeast Flakes 1 teaspoon baking powder 

1 teaspoon garlic powder



1 teaspoon dried basil

¾ teaspoon Natural Road Himalayan Rock Salt 

2 cups water

 3 cups finely diced vegetables (these can be fresh, frozen or canned – try corn, broccoli, capsicum, mushrooms, zucchinis and carrots) 

2 shallots, diced



handful of spinach, chopped

chives, to garnish METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease well a 12-hole muffin pan – use non-s=ck or paper cases.

2. Place all the dry ingredients in large bowl. Whisk in water to form a runny baIer. Add vegetables and mix to combine.

3. Scoop a quarter-cup of mixture into each muffin hole, and sprinkle with chives.

4. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or un=l a skewer comes out clean from the centre of the friIatas. If they are s=ll not firm, leave to cool completely before ea=ng.

The Novellas will present their stylish, rich and engaging show in the Windsong Pavilion at Four Winds for one special evening only – on Friday 20th November at 7.30pm The Novellas explore the confluence between the wriIen word and song, celebra=ng the emo=onal power of storytelling through music and lyrics. This is Lit-pop with shades of blues, jazz, Sturm und Drang.

“Whilst we revel in the flavours and tradi=ons of popular music, our take on them offers an alterna=ve perspec=ve, at once refreshingly new yet somehow familiar.” – Myoung Jae Yi Myoung Jae Yi’s songs explore the characters (their rela=onships, flaws, failures and triumphs) and stories from his favourite books and texts. In this show his songs respond to the character Haňťa from Too Loud a Solitude, a tender and funny story by Czech author Bohumil Hrabal.

Haňťa is a man who has lived in a Czech police state for 35 years, working as compactor of wastepaper and books. He uses his job to save and amass astounding numbers of rare and banned books. He has rescued so many books from the jaws of the hydraulic press, his house is filled to the rooXops. When a new automa=c press makes his job redundant there's only one thing he can do - go down with his ship.

Too Loud A Solitude is an eccentric romp celebra=ng the indestructability of the wriIen word against censorship and poli=cal oppression. A story fit for our =mes.

The Novellas are: Myoung Jae Yi (guitar and vocals) is the songwriter for the Novellas taking inspira=on from his love of reading. He was the founder of Korean punk-rock band Dabang, performs with various music groups and produc=ons around the Bega Valley. Also Andrew Gray (piano and vocals), Josh Becker (double bass), Georgina Hargraves (saxophone, oboe, flute, clarinet), Joseph Fragnito (drums, vibes and percussion).

The Character of HantA will be created by actor Patrick Dickson. Dickson has been ac=ng professionally on stage, TV and film since 1976 in the UK and Australia. Patrick’s TV and film credits include The Timeless Land, Carson's Law, Home and Away, Rake, Seachange, A Bridge Too Far and Rogue Na=on.

The show will run for 1.5 hours, with an intermission. Bar service will be available on the night.

Women of Steel – the fight for the right to work at BHP On Friday 6 November, Women of Steel, directed by Nelligan film maker Robynne Murphy, was awarded the Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th,NSW’s 2017 2020 History Council of Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Macquarie PHA Applied History Award and was praised by the History Council judges for its informa=ve, griIy, evoca=ve and powerful presenta=on of history.

Women of Steel is a rousing story about the 1980-1994 campaign by Wollongong women for jobs in the BHPAIS steel works. Robynne was a 30-year career steelworker whose jobs at the Port Kembla plant included welder, crane driver, and hot strip mill operator.

Women of Steel, is the personal story of the campaign sustained by Robynne Murphy and hundreds of other local women for the right to work at BHP is exci=ng, moving and oXen humourous. Robynne's jobs at the Port Kembla plant included welder, crane driver, and hot strip mill operator.

The film will make its Union Premiere at the ACTU Ac=vist Conference on Wednesday 18th November before travelling around the country.

It is an important and now some=mes forgoIen episode in Australia’s history and Robynne leX a promising career as a young filmmaker (she was selected for AFTRS’s very first intake) when she became caught up in the Jobs for Women Campaign.

Women of Steel was recently a finalist in the pres=gious $10,000 Documentary Australia Founda=on Award for Australian Documentary at the Sydney Film Fes=val. This is Robynne’s second film to be featured in the Sydney Film Fes=val; her first was in 1974.

Women of Steel is also a finalist in Best Documentary – History and Best Documentary – Social & Poli"cal Issues categories of the 2020 ATOM (Australian Teachers of Media) Awards.

That Robynne could return to filmmaking so successfully aXer so many years is a tes=mony not only to her talents but also to the exci=ng nature of the events that took place in Wollongong during the 1980s.

Today, Robynne con=nues to work in a non-tradi=onal job, albeit now as a volunteer. She drives the truck for her RFS brigade and was on the ground all through the 2019-2020 fires on the far south coast of NSW. This fascina=ng account of the largely forgoIen history of Australia’s Steel City was craXed over decades with support from local community volunteers and over 500 donors.

Regional Gallery to host award-winning glass sculptor Clare Belfrage Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

Bega Valley Regional Gallery is proud to host mul= award-winning glass sculptor, Clare Belfrage who’s na=onal and interna=onal career spans almost three decades.

“Clare Belfrage is a JamFactory icon who has forged an interna=onal reputa=on for her finely detailed glass sculptures that marry organic blown forms with intricate line work,” Gallery Director, Iain Dawson said.

“South Australia’s JamFactory is a unique not-for-profit cultural organisa=on that has supported and promoted outstanding Australian design and craXsmanship for almost 50 years.

“She is par=cularly drawn to the layered rhythms that mark growth, change and the passing of =me in the natural world.”

“When crea=ng my artworks, I am definitely thinking of the building up of paIern, line by line, one small element applied at a =me, slowly crea=ng a tempo,” Ms Belfrage says.

“It is clearly different to the accumula=ve process in nature, yet somehow reminiscent, and I think the flow of making is captured within the final object.”

The characteris=cally fluid lines found throughout Belfrage’s works are part of a technical breakthrough involving the ar=st’s innova=ve use of fine glass rods known as ‘stringers’.

In this process, Belfrage applies heavily stretched, thinned and lengthened stringers to her blown glass forms early in produc=on.

Rather than using commercially available stringers, Belfrage makes her own, painstakingly walking and stretching glass along tracks in order to produce very fine lengths of glass with the desired thickness, density, transparency and linear effects.

The Clare Belfrage exhibi=on, A Measure Of Time, will feature at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery from 16 November 2020 to 16 January 2021.

Picturing devasta/on, resilience and hope at the Garden The Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden will open Vol 16 September 15th 2017 its 28 December 7th, 2017 Volannual 48 27th 111April Julyphotographic 12th 2018 2019 exhibi=on on Friday 13 November.

For its ninth year the successful photographic compe==on and exhibi=on will be a liIle different, with images from just two photographers - Botanic Garden manager Michael Anlezark and long-=me supporter and Friend of the garden Ken Foster – with the theme Recovery, a Year of Devasta"on, Above: Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden manager Michael Anlezark with Resilience and Hope. long-"me Garden Friend Ken Foster have supplied the images for the ninth annual photographic exhibi"on and fundraising calendar.

Mr Anlezark said the exhibi=on was normally supported by over 80 local photographers who submit around 300 images.

“AXer the devasta=on of the News Year’s Eve bushfire the Botanic Garden was closed to the public for over six months,” Mr Anlezark said.

“The site was very dangerous and there was no way we could let the public in so the only record of what happened from that =me was with images that I had taken. Once the site was made rela=vely safe, Ken Foster was given permission to bring his camera in and record the con=nued recovery.”

Both photographers agreed that capturing, sor=ng and preparing images for exhibi=on had been an important part of their own recovery process and at =mes a very emo=onal experience.

“So many people have a strong aIachment to the garden and some may find the images both upseDng and upliXing,” Mr Foster said.

The exhibi=on will run un=l Sunday 22 November in the Garden’s new func=on room. Just one copy of each image on exhibi=on will be available for sale, with a selec=on included in the 2021 fundraising calendar. All funds raised go towards the Garden’s ongoing recovery efforts.

individual percep=ons of art will be on show at the Bas from Saturday 14 November.

Same same, but different sees Terry and Amanda Fuller each express their shared love and value of nature in both 2D and 3D works.

Eurobodalla Council’s arts coordinator Indi Carmichael said the exhibi=on explored the similari=es in their work.

“Amanda is an experienced ar=st and exhibitor currently working from her own studio in Sydney’s northern beaches, while Terry is a sculptor from Tuross Head whose work features strong organic architectural values,” she said.

“Reflected in their work is their shared bond, life experiences and love to create.

Sandra Hanlon Scrapes Home in Close Finish at Tuross Vets Sixty five players teed off for a Single Stableford round at Tuross Head Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 Country Club on Wednesday 11 November. Winner on the day was Sandra Hanlon on 24 points. Runner up on count backs was Jeanette Miller from Bruce Martin and Rob Nash, all three players recording scores of 23 points.

Minor prizes were awarded to Greg Bush on 23, Herb Muriwai and Kevin Dukes on 22, Ray Downey, Shirley Quinlan, Graham Moore and Les Johanson on 21, Frank Pomfret, Steve Collins, Ian Wratten, Noel Downie, Peter Coffey, Mike Birks and Ann Ware on 20, and finally Derek Hoare, Tony Crook, Richard Kelly, Peter Frost and Annette Manton on 19. Terry Lunn was the unfortunate winner of this week's infamous Bradman award.

The final Tuross Bowls Championship event for 2020 has been completed with Noel Downie winning an epic final of the Consistency Singles against Stan Peck. The recent rain caused havoc with the scheduling of this event. In one rescheduled match Noel Downie proved too strong for John Monks winning their game 150 to 120. The two semi-finals were very similar in how they played out. Downie controlled his game with Ray Downey leading all the way to record a 151 – 119 victory. Stan Peck also controlled his clash with Chris Coddington winning 154 – 126.

The Final was a classic match. Peck started well but by the 11th end the scores were locked at 50 all. Peck then skipped away to open up a 90 – 70 advantage. The momentum then swung to Downie who clawed away at the lead and by the 22nd end the scores were again equal at 110 all. Downie then skipped away to a 140 – 130 lead with just 3 ends to play. On the next end Peck hit back with 10 points to once again =e the scores up at 140 all. Downie won the next end 6 – 4 to give him a slight advantage. The last end was extremely =ght with Peck having a chance to grab a win with his last bowl. Unfortunately for him, his bowl was just wide of the mark. The players shared the points on the end – the 5 points enough to give Downie a 151 to 149 victory.

Colin Houghton accepts Hole in One award A highlight of the golfing presenta=ons at Tuross Head Country Club was an award to well known Tuross Head and south coast golfer Col Houghton for a recent hole in one on the Tuross course.

Colin received a mounted golfing trophy, a polo shirt and a boIle of wine to celebrate.

Tuross Head Country Club men's golfers competed in a par compe==on this week.

Ian Manton emerged as the winner with a score of plus 3.

Broulee Runners Nov 11th 2020 This evening, which is week 5 of being back on the track, we had 232017 actual runners and 12 virtual Vol 16 September 15th 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 runners. We welcomed Ting Liu to her first run with the group. Personal best =mes were recorded by Ashley Garland and Eliza Milenkovic.

It was good to see Angus Murphy back with the group and he promises that son Jus=n will be back next week. If Jus=n is on form, he may be able to be strong compe==on for young gun Tino Lopres=.

A special welcome was given to Miles Craighead, who was an original of the event back on 7 February 2007. His last appearance was 8 years ago. He has now accumulated 27 runs and it is hoped that he will earn his 30-run shirt before he heads back to New

Pauline Nash was a well deserved winner for Division 1 playing magnificently and scoring a very impressive 43 neI, narrowly taking the lead from R/U Dee Meek who played with her usual exper=se scoring 42 neI. Marilyn Bingham (right) was also on her game taking out 1st place in Division 2 with a notable 38 neI, whilst R/U Jan LouDt scored a most worthy 36 neI on C/B.

Tentative signs of improvement this week. With flathead being the mainstay of this weeks captures. Most definitely the lower reaches, are the Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 on. The airport flats on the north side, and the areas to27th concentrate Volareas 48 2018 111April July 12th 2019 around Preddy’s wharf on the south side. Soft plastics have been the best performer lure wise, with bait also producing a few good fish as well. The flats around the front of Malabar creek have also been producing a few flathead, as the water is slowly starting to clear up. Just remember not to venture into Malabar creek and the weir area, as this is a marine sanctuary zone.

Further upstream the flats under the bridge haven’t really shown much signs of life yet. Hopefully this will soon change.

Tuross river.

As for Tuross, a lot of the activity has been compressed towards the front of the river around the mouth and nearby flats. There have been a few reports of Luderick from around the mouth of the river where the water is cleaner. There have also been a few reports of flathead around the potato point side of the system. Apart from that, there have been very few reports of fish further upstream. As the system settles, the fishing will improve.

Rock and beach.

There have been reasonable numbers of salmon around on beaches that have cleaner water. Try the beaches up towards Broulee and down towards Congo and Bingie.

If fishing by yourself, take your time getting out to your chosen spot and don’t overload yourself. Last weekend I had my trip out to Mullimburra point cut short after I took a fall before I made the platform itself. A not so quick trip to emergency ended up with 7 stitches to my knee and a wasted afternoon. Let someone know where you are going, and take only what you need.

Offshore.

Well, hasn’t this week been great for the offshore brigade!!! With schools of Yellow Fin Tuna being found in really close, and in really shallow water for this species. The schools have been reported from Broulee all the way down to Tuross in as little as 65m of water. Fish to 50kg have been seen and caught, with schools busting up on the surface before quickly moving on. Trolled shallow running hard body lures and cast stick bait lures have been the lures of choice. This water depth is usually where the snapper and flathead guys go, so while waiting for the fin to turn up, you could always drop a bait or two and take home a feed of snapper or flathead as well.

More Xmas stock continues to arrive each week, so the shop is starting to fill up as we race towards what will hopefully be a busy xmas season for us all.
