editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, Have our Councillors fallen to such new lows as to have become liBle more than neutered cuckolds?

The exercise, esDmated to cost more than $10,000 was endorsed to by the councillors themselves in order to flush out a possible Judas in their ranks.

It is understood that the councillors were required to hand over their laptops, ipads and phones to staff to allow invesDgators to trawl phone and email records looking for evidence. Each councillor was phoned and all interviews were recorded. It is a serious allegaDon and the consequences, if proven, are a Code of Conduct or even possible criminal acDons. (PS—they are all innocent and the inves ga on is li le more than a witch hunt with The Beagle advising the inves gator of the facts—all Council had to do was phone and ask) With that hanging over their heads it is liBle wonder that the councillors haven’t responded to emails or phone calls this week asking for their response to the announcement by the Member for Bega, Andrew Constance, of $3m from the Growing Local Economies fund will deliver Mogo Adventure Trail upgrades, including upgrading and marking exisDng tracks and trails and building crucial missing links.

There is liBle doubt that funding for Mogo Adventure Trail will help in our economic recovery and hopefully, as announced, ”deliver an adventure trail network that will be both a significant tourism asset and encourage visitors to return to Mogo and the broader region, providing a much needed long term economic boost for the community.”

The fly in the ointment however is due process. In this case due process has been replaced with a Captain’s Call with liBle evidence of any apparent respect of Local Government protocols.

Presently the DRAFT Mogo Adventure Trail proposal is out for public comment (closes Oct 19th). The Councillors have been clear that they want to hear from the community and they encourage public submissions that will then accompany a report to be delivered back to council for them to vote on. That is due process.

This week, even before submissions closed, Council announced “ Huge shoutout to Andrew Constance MP who yesterday announced $3 million in NSW Government funding to build mountain bike trails in the forests around Mogo. Thanks to Andrew and the NSW Government, we'll now see 125km of world-class trails built, and 30km of exisDng trails formalised in Mogo State Forest.”

And there you have it. Any submission made to the draO is redundant, any report called for by Councillors is needless, and their vote to endorse or reject the project is dispensable. And our councillors are all too scared to voice an opinion publicly for fear of being threatened with a Code of Conduct, or more.

Beach Road marina access While road works conDnue on Beach Road, Eurobodalla Council is reminding residents that access to Batemans Bay Marina and JJ’s restaurant isVolalways available the Beach Road-Bavarde 16 September 15thvia 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 Avenue roundabout.

AsphalDng work has stopped for now so as not to disrupt weekend traffic, but it will resume on Sunday night for three more 6pm to 6am shiOs, finishing Wednesday morning.

The road does get busy between 7pm and 8pm, and drivers are asked to slow down and be paDent if traffic banks up, and to obey traffic controllers.

The asphalDng work will be complete by Wednesday, and the enDre project finished prior to Christmas.

It will see the road and pathways between Club Catalina and Batemans Bay Marina rebuilt to improve safety, reduce crashes and adapt to sea level rise. The work includes replacement of stormwater and water mains, kerb and guBer and extension of the concrete median.

Finding informa&on and services to support carers just got easier with the launch of a new portal on the Service NSW website.

The portal provides a one-stop-shop for carers' to access programs, services, payment and concessions.

Pontoon planned for BBay foreshore Vol 16 September 15th 2017 River users and2018 people 28 December 7th, 2017 enjoying the Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2019

Clyde River foreshore will benefit from an enhanced new mariDme pontoon being delivered as part of the Batemans Bay Bridge project.

Member for Bega Andrew Constance said as construcDon on the bridge progresses, the community will begin to noDce work beginning on foreshore improvements like the floaDng pontoon, which will deliver more boat berths than originally proposed and beBer access to the CBD. “Survey and design work is being carried out for the pontoon which will be located downstream of the exisDng T-wharf, on the CBD side of the river,” Mr Constance said.

“The pontoon will improve access to the foreshore and town centre and increase berthing opportuniDes for river users when it opens for use.”

Mr Constance said the design of the pontoon will reflect feedback from the Foreshore Advisory CommiBee and wider community on the project’s Urban Design and Landscape Plan. Locals and visitors to Batemans Bay can also expect to see the deck of the new bridge nearing compleDon by the end of the year.

“The community can expect to see most of the five piers connected to form the superstructure of the bridge in place by the end of the year, with the northern and middle secDons of the new bridge to be completed first,” Mr Constance said.

“The project has already hit an important milestone with more than 50 per cent of the segments needed to build the new bridge now in place and the bridge will be parDally opened to two lanes of traffic by mid2021, weather permiUng. Planning is also being carried out for a new artwork on the southern foreshore to pay tribute to the exisDng bridge and a public mural on the northern abutment of the new bridge that will celebrate the region's heritage and cultural values.”

Transport for NSW will also be temporarily opening the new Wharf Road off ramp from the Princes Highway to allow quicker access to Wharf Road and the holiday parks from Friday 9 October unDl mid2021. More informaDon will be available in coming months.

Sparing Snapper’s penguins from snaring plas&cs Marine debris is15th a world-wide problem, with street liBer Vol 16 September 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 2018 111April July 12th 2019 washing into guBers and drains to pollute rivers and oceans. Closer to home, rubbish in the Clyde estuary is posing entanglement risks to the liBle penguins that live there.

Thinking globally, but acDng locally, Eurobodalla Council has installed liBer-catching baskets in the stormwater drains of the Batemans Bay CBD. Environmental officer Lily Berry said 10 drain baskets were installed in 2018.

“As part of our liBle penguin project, we’ve installed another 10 drain baskets to help protect their environment,” she said.

“We’ve traced a lot of the liBer we’ve removed from the Snapper and Tollgate Islands – where liBle penguins live and nest – back to the Bay CBD. A lot of the rubbish we collect is easily windblown or carried along waterways down into the estuary.”

Ms Berry said the drain baskets were regularly cleaned and monitored.

“The drain baskets not only stop polluDon entering the Clyde, but by logging data about the collected liBer into the Australian Marine Debris Database we can develop targeted soluDons that stop the flow of rubbish at the source,” Ms Berry said.

“The most common items in the drain baskets are cigareBe buBs, plasDc bag remnants and plasDc food packaging.

“Clearly the two most effecDve acDons people can take is to avoid single-use plasDc bags and wrappers and dispose of items in a bin.”

Monty’s Place: Seven Years Of Serving Narooma Monty’s Place will be celebraDng its 7th birthday on 21 October 2020. Monty’s is sDll going strong with a takeaway service every Wednesday from 12.00-1.30pm at the UniDng Church Hall in Narooma, beside the water tank.

There have been many challenges during 7 years, but the year 2020 has tested the Narooma community like no other. Bushfires and COVID-19 restricDons have disrupted all our lives and the consequences have fallen heavily on the disadvantaged and isolated in our community.

The Monty’s commiBee and volunteers have worked hard to conDnue to support their guests throughout this Dme. Monty’s Place Volunteer Coordinator, Di White said, “the success of Monty’s Place is a tribute to our amazing volunteers who show up every week to provide friendship and a nutriDous meal to our guests” From June 2019 to March 2020, Monty’s Place served 3,181 sit-down meals. This figure includes the 565 meals that Monty’s prepared and served for the Narooma EvacuaDon Centre during the bushfires. Monty’s also provided 828 takeaway meals for guests who needed a bit more support.

When the COVID virus restricted all our lives in March 2020, Monty’s volunteers were determined their service would conDnue and quickly moved to a takeaway-only service. During this Dme, a further 1,403 takeaway meals were provided. Guests pick-up a takeaway bag containing a hot meal, bread, cake and fruit each week, There is also an assortment of free food and other household items available to our guests.

Monty’s thanks guests for following the strict COVID rules of hygiene and physical distancing. This takeaway service will conDnue unDl NSW Health requirements allow a return to table service.

Providing this total of 5,412 meals over the last year, would not have been possible without the loyalty and generosity of many wonderful donors. Woolworths, Narooma, ABC Bakery, Tilba Milk and several other local businesses have been providing support to Monty’s Place throughout the last seven years. Local Service Groups have been incredibly generous, including Rotary, Narooma Tennis Club, Quota, Drop in Centre, Lions Club, Men’s Shed, Narooma RFS and many others. There are also many individuals who provide ongoing financial and in-kind to support to Monty’s Place.

The support from SHASA and MESA with the installaDon of solar panels, and support from ‘Another Room’ and Katrina Scobie with an extension to the Church Hall was invaluable in allowing Monty’s Place to work more efficiently and safely.

Monty’s Place takeaway will conDnue to be there every Wednesday from 12.00-1.30pm at the Narooma UniDng Church Hall, Di White said “We are looking forward to another year supporDng the Narooma Community and geUng back to our normal sit-down service as soon as we are allowed”.

Police are urging motorists to travel safely as they make their way to Mount Panorama this weekend.

Although traffic will be considerably down on previous years, general duDes and specialist police will be out in force targeDng speeding, drink and drug driving, mobile phone use and seat-belt offences.

Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie, said road safety is everyone’s responsibility and motorists should avoid puUng themselves and other road users at risk.

“There will be a significant police presence on all roads leading to Bathurst and people should obey the road rules, parDcularly speed limits,” Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.

“Dangerous or irresponsible behaviour by drivers will not be tolerated and people should do everything they can to ensure the safety of themselves and those around them.

“Random drug and alcohol tesDng will be in place in and around Bathurst, and people are urged to take precauDons to make sure they arrive safely and get home from the event in one piece.

“Driver behaviour contributes to the large majority of fatal and injury crashes, so people need to drive to the condiDons that are prevailing at the Dme, show paDence and courtesy to other road users,” Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.

OperaDon Bathurst, a high-visibility police operaDon – which will also target anD-social behaviour and alcohol-related violence – will run unDl Sunday 18 October 2020.

Planning is conDnuing for a boaDng pontoon on the Tuross River . Council have developed a number of proposals with the final draO plan sent to Marine Parks for consideraDon and a permit to proceed.

A meeDng was held recently to discuss the issue with Council, Fisheries and Marine Parks. The project was funded by the Commonwealth Government as a result of an elecDon commitment. RecreaDonal Fishing Alliance of NSW (RFA) look forward to good news and concurrence from Marine Parks.

Discussions are being held with Council for a resolu on.

The RFA aBended a further meeDng on site and a meeDng at Council to gain a beBer understanding of this issue. This follows a leBer of concern to Council in August 2019 and a visit from two Fisheries Access Officers who directed the community to Council to resolve the issue.

This issue is ongoing, further meeDngs are planned as it is not just a straighYorward maBer. The RFA has put forward a number of ideas and funding possibiliDes to Council with the aim of obtaining access and a win/win for all parDes. If access is lost access to Trunketabella Lake is extremely difficult.

Trained and experienced climbers will be sleeping high in the trees this weekend, but you don’t need to be a climber to get involved. Many parDcipants aBending this weekend will simply be seUng up hammocks near the forest floor for a night of forest camping.

Organisers say "We want everyone who cares about forests to get involved and join our passionate global community of tree climbers, scienDsts, adventurers and forest enthusiasts in showing appreciaDon for these incredible environments.

"This year’s Big Canopy Campout will focus on the local and naDve trees and forests that have become so integral to our everyday lives.

"Our chosen charity for 2020 is the incredible Bob Brown FoundaDon. They have played a fundamental role in building the Big Canopy Campout community from the beginning, with their inspiring and unrelenDng work protecDng the naDve forests of Tasmania. We are excited to be joining forces to campaign and protect naDve forests and ecosystems around the world."

The Big Canopy Campout can be found 800m on the northern side of Sheep Track before it meets with The River Road (if coming from the Princes Highway).

Another opDon is to do a camp-in at home and then join the Brooman Forest ConservaDon group's twohour logging tour at 2pm Saturday October 17th or at 11am on Sunday October 18th. Both tours will be in convoy so be sure you car has high clearance suitable for dirt roads. They begin at the picnic tables at the Termeil Service StaDon on the highway.

During COVID-19, ABA has played an important role supporDng Australian mums and this has paved the way for the ABA is here for you campaign. ABA provided unprecedented support for pregnant women and new parents who had been leO without their usual support structures due to social distancing restricDons, including the closure of ante- and postnatal services in March.

Tasmanian mum Megan Nayler, whose daughter Lumi was born in June, had to cancel her baby shower and start isolaDon with her husband from mid-March. AOer Lumi’s birth, Megan said the support she received from ABA meant she was able to carry on breasYeeding her daughter through the stresses and challenges of COVID-19.

‘It’s scary to have a baby during a pandemic. You have a percepDon in your mind of what pregnancy and having your first baby will feel like and it was so different to that,’ Megan said.

‘I was so overwhelmed by it all, with no one but my husband able to visit us in hospital that I ended up leaving the hospital on day 2 — much earlier than I’d anDcipated. I had a few issues with breasYeeding and my mother-in-law put me in touch with ABA who stepped in with lots of support — mentally for me and physically so I could breasYeed Lumi. It was a lifesaver. I can guarantee without Rosalie (my motherin-law) and ABA I would not be sDll breasYeeding.

At the start of the pandemic, ABA moved all of its breasYeeding support services online, including breasYeeding educaDon classes and local support groups. This has allowed more parents than ever to access ABA’s services.

Naomi Hull, ABA Senior Manager BreasYeeding InformaDon and Research, says stories like Megan’s have been common during the pandemic. They show that breasYeeding support services have never been more important during the Dme of change, stress and uncertainty that oOen comes from having a baby, let alone having a baby during a pandemic.

Since the start of the pandemic, ABA has seen an increase in the number of families calling the BreasYeeding Helpline. In April, the BreasYeeding Helpline received 6103 calls, a 20% call increase compared to the monthly average.

Changes to Recrea&onal Cockle Harves&ng The NSW Government has reduced the possession limit of from 15th 50 to2017 20 per person, effecDve from 14 VolCockles 16 September 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 October 2020.

This change has been implemented following consultaDon with and support from the NSW RecreaDonal Fishing Advisory Council. The change is to ensure a balance between managing Cockle numbers into the future while sDll providing a sustainable catch for recreaDonal fishers.

The rules now allow for a combined recreaDonal possession limit of 50 Cockles, Mussels and Pipis, of which only 20 can now be Cockles. The new possession limit applies per person across the whole State.

The new rules have been implemented through the Fisheries Management (Possession Limit) (Estuary Cockles) Order 2020, which was issued under SecDons 227 and 228 of the Fisheries Management 1994 and published in the NSW Government GazeBe. Girls on Fire at Mogo Sun & Mon, Nov 15th & 16th Girls on Fire have announced a new COVID-safe Vol September 15th 2017 for teenage girls this and16interacDve program 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 November Nov 15th and 16th at MOGO. “Virtually Possible” Girls Fire and Resilience Program will combine some online learning with a 1-day hands-on pracDcal session to introduce girls aged 16-19 to working and volunteering in our fire and emergency services.

ApplicaDons for the mulD-agency, experienDal learning program are now open for parDcipants, mentors and acDvity facilitators.

Other locaDons include Sydney, Dubbo, Newcastle, Mogo, Kempsey/Port Macquarie and Griffith.

Older Eurobodalla residents moving rapidly to embrace the Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 internet First it was the bushfires, and then Covid, that leO many of our older residents feeling disconnected with the outside world.

The bushfires required an immediacy of informaDon and fortunately the radio provided an essenDal link to the outside world for those of our older residents not connected to the internet. As it turned out, with telecommunicaDons failing, and then electricity, the whole shire became dependent on baBery powered radios for news.

The bushfires idenDfied to many families that the feeling of isolaDon was an issue to face, soon to be added to by Covid restricDons. Once again it was essenDal to have accurate and Dmely news delivered to our older residents and to ensure they were not further isolated in a world that was rapidly changing.

Fortunately with the bushfires and Covid came a spike in uptake by our older residents to venture onto the internet via devices provided by family to ensure older family members could be contacted using new technologies of Zoom and FaceDme. But with this uptake came the need to train users into the world of the internet with all of its posiDves and negaDves. Fortunately for Eurobodalla we have business such as The Tec Exec in Batemans Bay who develop and deliver specific targeted training programs across the board including Internet 101 for beginners.

The Tec Exec founder, Tricia Pye, told The Beagle "The current situaDon on the South Coast aOer the devastaDng fires and now with Covid-19 has accelerated the speed of change and adaptaDon to new digital technologies for contactless services including how we eat, shop and visit the doctor."

"VisiDng a restaurant or booking an appointment can be a frustraDng and daunDng experience with the adopDon of digital check ins and online menus parDcularly for seniors and others less familiar with contactless technology."

"We are building a team of locals to help manage and support Eurobodalla residents to gain these skills and maintain safety using online tools".

reading Gadfly 134 By Robert Macklin The best way to listen to politicians on television, I’ve discovered, is not at all. I don’t mean turn them off entirely – though several of my family would certainly vote for that – just Vol 16 September 15th 2017 the It’s12th a distraction.

But turn it off and suddenly you’re treated to a face in close-up that can tell you much more about the character of the speaker than all the wordage in the world. In fact, I’m told, our brains are actually designed to make judgements about our fellow human beings from their faces and their upper body language.

This is how we characterise film stars into heroes and villains even before they utter their opening lines. And it’s how politicians try to trick us with words while their faces are telling us a very different – and much more authentic – story.

It came crashing home last week when, once again, I couldn’t bear Scott Morrison pretending to answer Leigh Sales’ questions on 7.30. When I hit the ‘mute’ button I reared back in fright. I was suddenly confronted by a big angry bear. And if his lips curled up at the ends it wasn’t to smile but to dribble with hunger before tearing at someone’s throat Leigh’s, or worse, mine!

So, over the next few days I sought out other prominent pollies and tried the same experiment. The results were, well, mixed. Anthony Albanese, sans sound, I can report, does a great impression of an unmade bed. No surprises there.

But Josh Frydenberg was the very picture of a blow-up doll, frowning as if trying desperately to keep all the air inside lest it make a squeaky noise as it departed the stopper in his bottom.

Annastacia Palaszczuk minus that grating screech was Head Girl giving the valedictory at Indooroopilly High; while Dan Andrews could have been a prefect at Mannix College (which he probably was). The ACT debaters, Barr and Coe seemed to disappear into the studio background.

By now I’d caught the bug so next day I tuned in to CNN and rounded up Joe Biden. Alas, he’d hidden almost his entire face behind a blue mask. I quickly passed on to Kamala Harris and happily she was debating Mike Pence. Boy, did she put on a happy face or three. Whether she was being an Indian like her Mum, a Caribbean like her Dad or a stern Prosecutor like her professional self, she was happy-scary-smiley with teeth that radiated. Scott Morrison’s bear would have met his match.

Mike Pence, however, was not impressed. The only movement from his entire head came from a fly that perched briefly in his silver hair. Then, bingo, Joe was back, bare-faced this time, and it really didn’t make much difference; it still looked like a mask.

Finally, poor Gladys Berejiklian was everywhere and whether the sound was on or off she was either Gilligan of that TV Island or ‘Sad Sack’, a comic book character I remembered from childhood, a poor down-trodden soldier in the US Army always getting humiliated through no fault of his own. The only difference, I guess, is that Sad Sack was a private whereas poor Gladys, ‘stuffed up’ her private life with a bum from Wagga Wagga; and she was running the whole shooting match.

Just Like You - a review Just Like You Nick Hornby, Penguin Viking, 2020, ISBN 978-0-241-33857-5, 310pp A review

by Trevor Moore Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 2018 111here’s July 27th 12th 2019 Now, a book from one of Britain’s best contemporary novelists. His first novel, 1995’s High Fidelity was made into a movie (starring John Cusack) and a Broadway musical. It was recently reimagined this year in Sarah Kucserka and Veronica West’s 10-part series starring Zoë Kravitz. His appreciaDon of popular music is reflected in 2002’s 31 Songs (oddly enough about 26 songs). I am sure that this is why the soundtrack to the High Fidelity movie, which opens with The Thirteenth Floor Elevators’ You’re Gonna Miss Me, is probably the best-ever movie soundtrack – at least according to me. The soundtrack to the TV series is also preBy good. But I digress … Nick Hornby is a great writer and the movie industry knows that he tells a great story that translates well to screen … I leave you to watch 1998’s About A Boy and 1992’s Fever Pitch.

I had missed the publicaDon of Just Like You, but it is fortunate that two events coincided. The first event was that my daughter noDced its publicaDon and the second was that I had a birthday. As a result, the book arrived, tastefully wrapped and as a great surprise.

The novel is about an unlikely relaDonship between Joseph, who is a 22 year old man, who works part-Dme in a butcher’s shop and does a range of other part-Dme jobs while he prepares to go to university, and Lucy, who is the 42 year old head of English at a local secondary school. An added factor in the relaDonship is that Joseph is black, and Lucy is white.

The novel is set against the backdrop of the Brexit referendum. Hornby manages to capture not only the divisions between leave and remain but also the illogicality of the posiDons someDmes taken by people on either side. In the end, Joseph cannot make his mind up between Lucy’s passionate remain views and his father’s equally passionate leave views. He puts a Dck in both boxes on the ballot sheet. It’s worth noDng that Hornby wrote the novel before the Black Lives MaBer movement increased our awareness of cultural appropriaDon. Lucy has two sons and her relaDonship with Joseph starts when he agrees to babysit the two boys. They are delighted because Joseph knows one end of an Xbox from the other and he is a fount of soccer (or football as the English call it) knowledge. One thing leads to another and … well, I already told you what happens.

Hornby is a master of taking his Dme to tell a tale so that although you know that this relaDonship is going to happen, there’s just a nagging doubt that … perhaps it won’t. Once they have consummated the relaDonship and they realise that they are deeply fond of each other, the problems begin.

The two obvious problems are race and age, but this is England. Even now you need to add class, or whatever passes these days as class. Joseph’s mother realises that her son’s girlfriend is the same age as she is.

Conversely, Joseph realises that Lucy is the same age as his mother. What will happen if and when the two women meet? Lucy is middle class, vaguely leO-of-centre and intellectually inclined while Joseph has been brought up as a churchgoing (though not enthusiasDcally) working-class boy. The set-up could have been clichéd, but Hornby is a past master.

The book roars into life from page 1. While the underlying issues are complex and serious this is, at its heart, a funny book. He paints a couple of endearing characters and the reader is conDnually on their side hoping beagle weekly : Vol 177 October 16th 2020

You are not quite sure what is the basis for that love, but then perhaps we Vol 16for September 15this2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 never really know the reasons why we love someone. At one point in the novel Joseph muses "Could you only love someone who thought the same way as you, or were there other bridges to be built further up the river?" And that is what this novel is about.

I loved it. I read it in 2 days, and it made me want to go back and read Hornby’s other 8 novels … they’re all on my shelves somewhere. He is such a great storyteller. Buy this one and read it.

Trust—a review by Trevor Moore Chris Hammer, Allen & Unwin, 2020, ISBN 978-1-76087-741-5, 466pp Chris Hammer keeps himself under the pump. This is his third novel in as many years. I have previously reviewed 2018’s Scrublands and 2019’s Silver in these pages and given them a good rap. Both those novels had as their main character MarDn Scarsden and his partner (at least from the end of Scrublands) Mandalay Blonde. These two characters are larger than life; one cannot imagine any pair of people with heavier backstories. When I reviewed Silver, I commented that “it’s a dead cert that the Scarsden character is autobiographical but possibly more in the imaginaDon than in fact.”

Hammer was a journalist for more than thirty years. He reported from more than 30 countries on six conDnents for SBS. In Canberra his roles included being chief poliDcal correspondent for The Bulle n, senior writer for The Age and Online PoliDcal Editor for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. In the middle of the book he has the Mandalay Blonde character say “she sees it then, experiences it: the thrill of the story, like she's an explorer entering an unknown world, the first outsider to set eyes on a new civilisaDon, already preparing a report to the Royal Geographic Society. For the first Dme she seen MarDn's world from the inside, the reporter on the scent of a big story. And she feels it too, the euphoria. She feels the intoxicaDon and she feels the power.” I’m preBy sure that’s about the author as much as it is about the character.

Chris Hammer had been to Moruya to speak at one of Moruya Books’ literary lunches and I had met him briefly then. But I had the chance last week to speak to him one on one about the sequence of three novels and what might be coming next. All three novels fairly romp along, and the plots are formed from several interwoven narraDves. I wondered how he set about wriDng. He divides the writers of ficDon into two categories: the “ploBers” and the “panters”. The “ploBers” work out their story, their characters and Dmelines carefully in advance. They leave nothing to chance. The “panters” write by the seats of their pants. Hammer is a “panter”; he sits down and writes, and sees where the Muse takes him. He doesn’t set himself word counts; he is simply addicted to wriDng. If he gets stuck, he goes for a walk.

I asked him whether the MarDn Scarsden character was autobiographical. I got the sense that the answer Vol 16“parDally”.

September 15th 2017 was As a2017 journalist, Hammer’s wriDng needed to be based on facts. The process of journalism 28 December 7th, Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 involves checking one’s facts and on geUng things right. As a novelist, he says, you can make stuff up.

Nevertheless, his view is that even if you sacrifice accuracy in a novel, it remains important to be authenDc. It is, of course, a privilege of the novelist to create any character he likes, and with any backstory he (or she) cares to create. Trust is the third novel featuring the two central characters, and I wondered whether Hammer had taken his characters as far as they can reasonably go. He indicated that a future novel might be set in the same Australian universe as the first three, but the MarDn and Mandy characters would play minor roles. That one will be one to look forward to … and given the rate at which he works I am expecDng it in 2021.

But back to Trust … aOer the excitement of the story in Silver, MarDn and Mandy have seBled down in Port Silver (which is somewhere north of Sydney on the central coast) with Mandy’s son from a previous relaDonship, Liam. Life seems perfect. But perfect is not a good state for the novelist’s art and the plot of Trust opens with MarDn on the beach with Liam where he listens to a message from Mandy. The message is “one long scream, full of desperaDon and danger, ten seconds long.” He returns home to find Mandy gone and an unconscious man lying on the floor. The story unfolds over the next 10 days, the acDon taking place in Sydney. A good novel should always be plausible, at least in some context. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings may be fantasDcal but it’s conceptually consistent. Trust is not fantasDcal; it’s enDrely possible. It may even be real. If it is, then we will never know. It’s a story of corrupDon, fraud and the gullibility of people who shouldn’t be gullible.

It’s a great story that maintains its pace and draws you in. It’s a compelling read. It’s not a page turner, that term that is overused by breathless publishing markeDng execuDves. It’s possible to stop reading it before midnight and then pick it up the following day. Francis Bacon said that “some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.” This is a book that can be devoured, though it should be carefully chewed as it is devoured. Hammer draws his characters well, and he writes in a style that is engaging and easy to read. Notwithstanding the “panter” approach he takes, he must spend much Dme reading and re-reading to ensure the consistency of his plots. I am a cynical fellow and there is nothing I like more than to find an anachronism or an impossible birthdate or some other inconsistency in a novel. Finding one rarely spoils my enjoyment of a book, but it makes me feel that I have got one up on the author. Which is nonsense. And there are no inconsistencies that I can find in the plot of Trust.

It’s just a bloody good read. Janice at Moruya Books will have them piled high in her inesDmable emporium that is an ornament to the bookseller’s trade. Go there and buy one. You don’t need to have read Scrublands and Silver beforehand but if you can get hold of them then it would be worth reading them first. This is a good novel, well told by a really good writer. Buy it and make him rich.

Art Exhibi&on ‘From Fez to Casablanca’ by Cat Wilson opens October Vol 16 September22nd 15th 2017at the SoArt Gallery 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Narooma.

A new exhibiDon From Fez to Casablanca by local arDst Cat Wilson opens on the 22nd of October. Featuring cyanotype prints and digital collages inspired by the arDst’s Dme living in Morocco, the exhibiDon is on at the SoArt Gallery in Narooma unDl November 1st.

Cat Wilson is an Australian arDst working in photography and video. From 2014 – 2017 Cat lived in Casablanca with her Moroccan husband Faouzi Saouli. During that Dme she had the opportunity to study tradiDonal Islamic geometric design. Cat now lives in Narooma on the far south coast of NSW. Drawn to Morocco by its rich arDsanal heritage, Cat was excited to introduce hand made techniques into her work. Stepping into the ancient medina of Fez is like stepping back in Dme. Here surrounded by examples of tradiDonal Islamic paBerns Cat learned how to construct them and began hand-drawing negaDves and using these to print cyanotypes, one of the oldest forms of photographic printmaking.

During this Dme, Cat also discovered that alongside this rich heritage is a country rapidly modernising and Casablanca, the financial capital, spearheads this trend. Using digital photographs of Casablanca’s striking architecture and influenced by her study in geometric design, Cat uses digital collage to explore this tension between the tradiDonal and the modern.

“I love new technologies and the possibiliDes they open up. But I am also drawn to the methodical, meditaDve and repeDDve process of making things by hand. My Dme in Morocco, in these two very different ciDes produced two series of work. Both are studies of paBern and form exploring the tension between the drive towards modernity and nostalgia for the past.”

Cat will run a short workshop inside the gallery where parDcipants learn to construct a tradiDonal paBern from Fez using a ruler and compass. They will go on to use techniques to turn this construcDon into a finished piece in watercolour or gouache.

Race for 4 or 7 hours, solo or in relay teams – we have elite, age group and eBike categories! This is the near perfect race track for it: fast, flowy and technical enough to be a good challenge!

Rocky Trail Run | Sunday Race your way! Run the 7km Dme trail on the Deep Creek Dam loop 1x, 2x or 3x between 8am and 2pm!

There are no start orders and we will set up the Dming points so you can get a rest in between laps.

This is the first, ever, Rocky Trail Running event – these trails are super fun, there’s not too much elevaDon and we need trail blazers, literally, to give us loads of feedback!

The session was interrupted by a crash to Alec Morse which caused a limitaDon on lap Dmes and saw a number of drivers compromised.

Broulee Runners October 14th 2020 We have been in isolaDon for more than 30 weeks. Tonight, we come back together to be able to run the 5 kilometres. We sDll welcome Dmes from those who cannot join us in person and who run the various distances at their own locaDon. We all need to keep the dream alive so that soon we will be able to have us all back together.

Today we had 18 ran the course and 17 virtual runners. As we are back in actual race condiDons, we are now able to recognise those that run the course and recorded personal best Dmes. These are Lauren Evans, MaB Lambert ChrisDan Proksch and David McCann. We also welcome Ashley Garland, Joelle Karam, Jill Stapleton and Liza Milenkovic to their first run with the group.

Your UP TO DATE Fishing report courtesy of Tackle World Moruya Moruya River.

On the improve would be the best way to describe fishing in Moruya this week. There have been sighDngs of really nice Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 under the bridge this week, but geUng them to bite has VolwhiDng 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 been the hard part. Like last summer, they seem to be locked onto squirt worms. If you can find some squirt worms , you can almost guarantee a feed of whiDng. In front of the hospital, the bream conDnue to make their presence known. A few good fish have been pulled out of the holes here. Live nippers, soO plasDcs and good old frozen baits of prawn or Whitebait about have been working. Down towards the airport end, there have been a few flathead caught in the river around the warmer shallower waters. SoO plasDc presentaDons in the smaller 2.5” minnow or grub paBerns are what the fish are locked in on. Smaller hardbody lures will also work.

In behind the hole in the wall, staff member Nathan, has managed a few nice flathead to 48cm over the shallow flats on soO plasDcs. Further upstream, around the Yarragee bends, the odd flathead and bream can be found soaking up the warmth of the sun on a rising Dde again over the shallows.

Tuross River.

Upstream around the Bodalla bridge Ben Caddaye managed a nice flathead and bream on smaller soO plasDcs presentaDons last weekend. He found the warmer water, 22 deg he reported, and managed a few nice fish.

Further down stream, regular customer Mal has conDnued his success of the last few weeks with more bream and flathead on Daiwa Bait Junkie soO plasDcs in the bloodworm colour around four ways. He is also managing a few nice mud crabs each weekend. Keeping track of his pots has been an issue though, with a few of them disappearing to poachers. Please folks respect each other’s property, if it doesn’t belong to you, leave it alone.

Down around the front of the system, the flathead are sDll waking from a sleepy winter. The warmer shallower flats are the areas to concentrate on. There are the odd whiDng also starDng to wake up. Like Moruya, they seem to be locked in on squirt worms.

Rock and beach.

The beaches and breakwall have been quiet this last week. With only a few salmon being reported. There have been reports of a few luderick starDng to turn up off the rocks though.

Offshore.

Good reports of mixed bags conDnue to come in from around the 50m Mark this week. The wind has been a liBle hit and miss though. Early starts are seeing a more comfortable session before the wind comes up.

With lots of new season stock starDng to turn up, come in and check out the new gear for the summer season.
