editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, Imagine yourself arriving in Batemans Bay for a Sea Change. The area is stunningly beauAful, the golf course is perfect, fish are aplenty and there is much to explore. But you leC your family and friends behind to make this change. You leC the role you played in their lives and you leC the groups you had joined and the social Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th,that 2017added a level of richness to your life. company you kept Vol 48 27th 2018 111April July 12th 2019 You are advised by neighbours that there are many local social groups you can join and are directed to the Batemans Bay Community Centre.

You discover that this Centre is the hub of the town with many groups using the hall and meeAng rooms.

You learn that the original centre was built in the main street on land giCed by the community with the old hall built by the community using giCed materials and labour.

Interested in local history you learn that the new centre, now on the edge of town, was built by the Council in compensaAon for their having sold the original land and building under the misapprehension that they owned the Atle rather that simply being trustees.

You discover that the new Community Centre is a vibrant, well used place that provides a venue for dancing, marAal arts, the University of the Third Age classes, community group meeAngs and most importantly accommodates a purpose built commercial kitchen to provide Meals on Wheels for an ever expanding clientele in a region that celebrates having the highest number of over 60’s in the State.

But there is a misery you feel when you arrive for your first shiC as a volunteer and a sadness when you ask about dance classes as you discover that once again the Council has other plans for the community owned building.

The building, the hall, the meeAng room, the commercial kitchen, are now up for lease by Council to the highest bidder. Most likely it will be leased to a government community focussed agency such as Centrelink or HeadSpace.

You learn that the Council has now advised all of the groups including Meals on Wheels to find and hire alternate venues.

The only explanaAon Council offers is that they can do as they please and that the revenue from the lease will go towards the running costs of the new Mackay Park pool and hall when it is opened in 2022. Council generously advise that there will be a meeAng room available in the new building. In the meanAme Council is pushing ahead and the community centre see its doors closed to … the owners of the building being THE COMMUNITY The most unfortunate aspect of this is that the building is classified as OperaAonal which means that Council can do as it wishes without community consultaAon. The other, and most disappoinAng aspect of this despicable intent of Council is that the councillors are neither advocaAng nor showing any support of the community in their outcry at the gross manipulaAon of Council to commandeer and sell off a community asset to saAsfy a fiscal boGom line. unAl next—lei Beagle Editor…….. Construc%on begins on new aqua%c, arts centre ConstrucAon of the Batemans Bay AquaAc, Arts and Leisure Centre has officially begun, with a sod-turning ceremony marking the occasion on Friday.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, Bega MP Andrew Constance, Gilmore MP Fiona Phillips and Senator Hollie Hughes, along with representaAves from construcAon company ADCO ConstrucAons joined Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes. Fiona Phillips MP said of the event: "I know how long our Batemans Bay community has been fighAng for a new pool. Today, I was delighted to officially see construcAon start on the new Batemans Bay Regional AquaAc, Arts and Leisure Centre" Due for compleAon in early 2022, the mulA-million dollar facility will replace the exisAng outdoor Batemans Bay Pool with an indoor mulA-pool aquaAc centre, complete with four water slides and internal and external water play, as well as meeAng spaces, gymnasium and a 350-seat theatre, all joined by a gallery walk that will also house visitor informaAon and a café.

“The first stage of work will be the demoliAon of the exisAng pool and buildings, expected in the first half of October,” he said. “We will be using local subcontractors and suppliers where possible and employing a number of local people as well.”

Mr Lyons said the company recently held two informaAon days – one in Canberra and one in Batemans Bay – for prospecAve contractors. “We typically try to use local employees, subcontractors and suppliers in regional projects for their local knowledge and for the benefit of the community,” he said.

It really does show we are confident in ourselves and our future, and that the state and federal governments share that confidence.

“My personal thanks go to the sunset commiGee, and to the broader community who have worked towards this goal for more than twenty years. It’s so important too that local businesses and people are benefiAng from the project. Calling all fishos on the Far South Coast...

The latest round of Recreational Fishing Grants are now open.

The call is out for keen anglers to submit applications with any ideas Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017to support fishing habitats or just to improve rec new facilities, anything Vol 48 April 2018 111 July 27th 12th 2019 fishing in the Eurobodalla and Bega Valley.

Applications close on 30th October and are open to all fishing clubs and organisations, community groups, and councils.

Work begins on Potato Point Sewerage Scheme Work is set to soon begin on the construcAon of new sewerage infrastructure that will service the community of Potato Point. Eurobodalla Council recently awarded the construcAon contract for the first stage of the Potato Point Sewerage Scheme, which, once complete, will connect all properAes in the village to town sewer services, replacing exisAng sepAc tanks and significantly reducing the risk of environmental harm.

The first stage of the work will be the construcAon of a new sewage pump staAon on Potato Point Road, next to the Potato Point RFS shed, and a 6.7km underground sewer pipeline from the new pump staAon to the Bodalla Sewage Treatment Plant. A new water main will also be provided to ensure greater reliability for the village’s water supply.

Fewster Brothers ContracAng Pty Ltd will do the work and commuters should expect to see heavy machinery working along Potato Point Road over the next six to eight months, parAcularly in the vicinity of the RFS shed.

The second stage of the project is expected to begin early next year, and will involve construcAng underground pipelines to connect each household to the new sewage pump staAon. Expected to be operaAonal by late next year, the Potato Point Sewerage Scheme is made possible thanks to a $3.22 million grant through the NSW Government’s Restart NSW program.

Jane says “We want to draw aGenAon to scrapping of six sanctuaries within the Batemans Marine Park. Our display shows what this means for threatened ocean wildlife off Montague Island and for fish nurseries in Wagonga Inlet.

“The sanctuaries were put in place 13 years ago to protect crucial feeding and breeding areas.

“They were opened up to recreaAonal fishing by the NSW Government in December last year without any community consultaAon or scienAfic advice.

“The Nature Coast Marine Group is calling for these sanctuary areas to be restored, before it’s too late.”

Boa%es, fishos, sailors and paddlers in the na%onal spotlight The two million people who head out on the water each year in NSW are being reminded of ways to stay safe when boaAng through a new co-ordinated iniAaAve. The first ever NaAonal Safe BoaAng Week kicks Vol 16 September 15th 2017 off48 today with2018 one2017 simple message.

28 December 7th, Vol April 111 July 27th 12th 2019 “We want people to stop and think about what else could be done to improve their safety before and during every trip on a boat,” Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary Safety, Environment and RegulaAon Tara McCarthy said. “To the boaAes, fishos, sailors and paddlers out there, as well as those who are just along for the ride, we all have a responsibility to be smarter about safety on the water.”

NaAonal Safe BoaAng Week, which runs unAl 2 October, is a collaboraAve iniAaAve developed by mariAme agencies across Australia, including the NSW Government, BoaAng Industry AssociaAon and volunteer marine rescue services.

“Our data shows that not wearing a lifejacket and not making considered judgements about weather condiAons are some of the top reasons people get into trouble out on the water,” Ms McCarthy said.

“The soluAon is preGy simple – wearing a lifejacket at all Ames and checking weather forecasts both before and during trips out on the water could save your life.” The week culminates with ‘Wear a Lifejacket to Work Day’ on Friday 2 October, encouraging all boaAes to wear their most essenAal piece of safety equipment during work hours. "Wearing a lifejacket never ruined a day at work – or a day out on the water,” she said.

“The serious side to this message is that despite a long-term downward trend in boaAng fataliAes, 25 lives were lost in NSW during boaAng-related incidents in 2019-20. This is in contrast to the 11 fataliAes recorded during the previous financial year. “We are working towards zero fataliAes and serious injuries on NSW waterways by 2056.”

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos said the service’s volunteers were ready for what was likely to be one of the busiest boaAng summers yet on NSW waterways. “With travel further afield unlikely because of COVID-19, we expect more people than ever to head for the coastline and enjoy a boaAng holiday here at home,” he said. “Everyone planning to go boaAng this summer should take the Ame now to check their boat and safety gear, including their lifejackets and marine radio, are in good condiAon. “We urge all boaters to Log On with Marine Rescue NSW when they’re heading out. It’s quick, simple and free. Tell us where you’re going, how many people are on board and when you’re expecAng to return and our volunteers will keep watch. “If something goes wrong and you haven’t Logged Off as planned, our volunteers will start to search for you to bring you safely back to shore.”

community Changed traffic condi%ons on Princes Highway during NSW school holidays Motorists are advised of changed traffic condiAons on the Princes Highway during the NSW school holiday period starAng next week.

Work on Princes Highway upgrade projects will stop or be reduced over the school holidays period from Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October to reduce congesAon and improve traffic flow throughout work sites.

Traffic control will be in place on the Princes Highway at the Berry to Bomaderry upgrade and Island Point Road intersecAon improvement project to minimise traffic impacts as construcAon work progresses.

Speed limit reducAons will be in place on the Batemans Bay Bridge replacement project while segments for the new bridge are transported from south of Mogo to Batemans Bay, with speed limits returning to normal when segments aren’t being delivered and no deliveries occurring during peak travel Ames.

Road users can expect improved safety and reduced congesAon at the Kings and Princes Highway intersecAon at Batemans Bay with new traffic lights operaAonal before the October long weekend.

Signals will automaAcally respond to peak periods to enable a more balanced traffic flow and reduce queue lengths at the intersecAon. ConstrucAon sites will temporarily close on the Albion Park Rail bypass and Nowra Bridge projects over the October long weekend period from 6pm Friday 2 October unAl 7am Tuesday 6 October, with only criAcal acAviAes to be carried out during this Ame and no traffic impacts expected.

Work to remove high risk trees along the Princes Highway corridor to improve future bushfire resilience will not take place over the holiday period.

These changes are planned to give visitors and locals a safer and smoother journey.

Increased traffic volumes are expected on the Princes Highway during the school holiday period, so road users are encouraged to plan ahead and visit livetraffic.com or call 132 701 for the latest traffic updates.

The September meeAng of the Eurobodalla Photographic Club opened with an interacAve presentaAon of images on the theme “Transport” by Colin Pass. Colin managed to engage everyone present seeking opinions on the relevance or otherwise of the images to the topic and also the quality of the images. Colin has Vol 16 September 15th 2017 travelled through 28 December 7th,most 2017 of the conAnents over many years and gathered images raging from bicycles in the Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 desert to gondolas in Venice and boats in the backwaters of Asia. A fascinaAng insight to transport.

Following the judging and criAque of members compeAAon entries, Mick Newnham finished the night with a technical dissertaAon under the Atle Raw or Cooked. File types in the age of digital photography are many and complex. Mick explained the uses, applicaAons, and technical aspects of the file opAons available, in parAcular the importance of future proofing and archiving photographic collecAons.

Ozzie, Australia’s newest children’s personality and educator Ozzie is Australia’s newest personality for children, launching a fun and engaging series of educaAonal videos on YouTube, which are aimed primarily at ages two to eight. In addiAon to a new episode on COVIDVol September 15th 2017 1916 released today, the down-to-earth Ozzie series encourages children to learn about a wide range of 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 topics, including: surfing; garbage trucks and construcAon diggers; community helpers, such as firewomen; science experiments; the real-life Australian caGle dog which inspires the iconic and popular animated character, ‘Bluey’.

ScoG Richmond, a graphic designer, and Dylan Bray, a stay-at-home dad and freelance producer, are the duo behind the new YouTube channel. Full of excitement and energy, the videos have already featured guest appearances from world champion surfer Sally Fitzgibbons, ‘The Living Room’ host, Barry Du Bois, and Sixers cricket star, Jack Edwards, with more to be revealed.

“We saw an opportunity to create an Australian personality for children, with Aussie-born content that kids can relate to. Delivering the Goods: Pigs, Paint, Passengers, and …

Batemans Bay Historical Society is celebraAng a major step in its15th objecAve Volforward 16 September 2017 to help heritage organisaAons link 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 the stories of coastal trade along the south east coast of NSW. It has been awarded funding from the Australian NaAonal MariAme Museum for its project ‘Delivering the Goods’, making accessible the interpreted content of two original shipping ledgers from the Nelligen agency of the Illawarra Steam NavigaAon Company which serviced the south coast for almost a century.

The ledgers cover two decades of the mid 19th century as our coastal and Tablelands economies were developing.

Pigs, passengers, cheese, horsehair, corn, and, of course, Amber, leC. Drapery, alcohol, paint, parcels, and all manner of domesAc essenAals arrived to stock the shelves of local businesses and cheer the isolated townships.

The ISNC sailed from Sydney to Eden maintaining agency wharves in several ports; its large fleet features in stories of wrecked vessels, but fortunately no lives lost. In assessing their significance Bega historian Angela George, says. “The ledgers offer outstanding potenAal to contribute to the understanding, communicaAon and interpretaAon of a broad range of local and regional themes and subjects, including acAviAes of our pioneer families.”

Society president Ewan Morrison, noted that it has taken volunteers five years to pursue this project through grant applicaAons covering conservaAon, digiAsaAon, and finally interpretaAon. MMAPSS funding covers the services of local historian Julia Hill to review, theme and summarise the content, and an eHive (cloud) licence to upload data for public access in 2021.

The MariAme Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme is funded by the Australian Government through the Australian NaAonal MariAme Museum and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and CommunicaAons.

The Get Ready Weekend is a core community engagement acAvity conducted by the NSW RFS with the intenAon of preparing our community for the upcoming bush fire season. The 2019/2020 fire season was unprecedented in its scale and impact on NSW communiAes. Some communiAes were affected by the fires, some came close and others remain at a high risk.

The Durras Brigade is asking locals to spread the word and invite community members to come up to our fire shed on the Get Ready Weekend Saturday 3rd October to share stories about last season and seek advice on how best to prepare ourselves for the next fire season.

I draw your aGenAon to the DRAFT Mogo Adventure Trails Master Plan and request your response to what are, I believe, valid and perAnent concerns.

1.To the best of my knowledge no other user groups were consulted regarding this proposal. Not MANSW, not DSMRA or any other motorcycle or user group. Will other user groups be formally contacted prior to the public meeAng on 26th September 2020?

2. What car parking faciliAes will be available for an esAmated 900 vehicles per week , ( esAmated 45,000 people per year according to the draC proposal ), allowing for other current, regular visitors to Mogo’s shopping precinct?

3.What ameniAes will be provided to allow this addiAonal 900 people per week to change clothing, wash and use toilet faciliAes bearing in mind that the only public toilet currently available is on the intersecAon of Tomakin road and only caters to one user, male and female at a Ame and who will be paying for new ameniAes blocks?

4.Traffic control. That secAon of the Princes Highway is already a boGleneck that, parAcularly on weekends, the prime Ame for mountain bike acAvity as well as for local shops, is already dangerous and frustraAng for all road users. Will RMS be consulted as to road improvements?

5. What safety precauAons will be put in place to protect all users of this proposed area? The draC proposal in part states “ As with other mountain bike track networks both in NSW and elsewhere, risk associated with use of the tracks will be managed through track design, construcAon and sign posAng in accordance with the relevant standards. “ Sign posted? Provided by and paid for by who? Bear in mind Forestry CorporaAons website states in part “ Four wheel drives and trial bikes are welcome in NSW State Forests on formed and mapped roads and trails “ on the proviso that: “ Your vehicle must be registered, You must be a licensed driver or motorcycle rider. You must wear safety equipment as required by law.”

Which brings me to DraC Masterplan 2 Point 13, 13.1, 13.2 13.3 and 13.3.4 A significant number of the roads proposed for use of what has been called “ Gravel Grinding “ are formed roads to the west of Mogo township that not only allow access to properAes along those roads but are used regularly by through traffic gaining access to Larry’s Mountain Road, Araluen Road and points west to and from the township of Araluen.

Roads such as, Maulbrooks Road,Heffernans Road, Araluen Road, Knowles Road and to a lesser extent, Ross Ridge Road, Quart Pot Road, Pistol Shot Road, Wandera Trig Road ( which incidentally is the access road to a major communicaAons tower ) are not fit for addiAonal volumes of pedestrian style acAvity.

Ross Ridge Road also intersects with Runnyford Road which in addiAon to having access points to private property, is used for access to Batemans Bay by many Nelligen residents. In addiAon, Runnyford Road and in parAcular Araluen Road are, at peak holiday Ames, used as “ rat runs “ by people aGempAng to come to the area when or if the Kings Highway is blocked, be that by an accident or increased volumes of traffic.

To the best of my knowledge and belief, none of those roads menAoned in DraC Masterplan 2 Point 13, 13.1, 13.2, 13.3 and 13.3.4 carry significant signage to advise motorists of other road users. Will provision be included in this plan to provide addiAonal signage to advise all users as to the presence of all other users and who will be funding said signage?

Gadfly 130 By Robert Macklin Last week’s decision by the Morrison Government to use funding designed for renewables in their ‘gas16led economic15th recovery’ Vol September 2017 was the last straw. Our federal politicians, from both sides of the aisle, have 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 betrayed us.

In the most critical threat we have ever confronted – climate change – they have thrown down their weapons and run from the battlefield. Collectively and individually, they have deserted in the face of the enemy.

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman used a different but equally apt analogy this week. ‘Your child is sick with a disease,’ he wrote, ‘and you decided to take her to 100 different doctors to get multiple opinions. Ninety-nine doctors give you the same diagnosis and prescribed treatment; one tells you that there’s nothing to worry about. What parents in their right minds would follow the advice of the doctor with the one-out-of-100 diagnosis?’

Either way, be it Trump and the Republicans or Morrison and the Coalition, the failure to act rationally to oppose the disaster bearing down on all our lives is not just unacceptable, it is a profound dereliction of duty.

It gets worse. Australia’s loyal Opposition is unable or unwilling to either take up the discarded weapons or accept and pursue the diagnosis and treatment of the 99 doctors. As a group they’re utterly ineffectual.

Their leader, ‘Albo’ Albanese has been in the Parliament so long that his attitudes have become hostage to his professional pollsters. These soulless technocrats are dazzled by minutiae, adjusting and adapting their message to ever diminishing groupings. So Albanese is afraid to confront Joel Fitzgibbon in his Hunter Valley seat and two or three Queenslanders from coal country. The result is a fanciful commitment to carbon neutrality in 2050 without the most rudimentary ‘roadmap’ to reach it.

The idea that a party needs only to identify a life and death issue like climate change, do the hard yards to create the way through it and trumpet the story from the rooftops is beyond their comprehension. Yet the truth is that if the cause it powerful enough an electorate really can be galvanised to deliver a landslide victory. If Fitzgibbon is lost in the avalanche, too bad; there’ll be half a dozen new Labor MPs to replace him.

And just when the Greens might carry the banner high, they’re so entangled in internal squabbles and mutual bitchery that their message is lost in transmission. Once again, they have failed their countrymen, just as they did when they voted against Rudd’s cap-and-trade scheme in 2009.

So, where to from here?

It would be great if somehow we were able to co-opt a leader who could bring together the ‘Thoughtful Centre’ like the wonderful Birgitte Nyborg in that great Danish political drama series ‘Borgen’. I could think of half a dozen Australian women who could lead the march, two of whom are already in the Parliament - Helen Haines and Zali Steggall. But as yet neither singly nor together have they set out to bring other candidates into their campaign. And until they, like the rest of us, will be frustrated and alienated by a system dominated by fossil fuel lobbyists and prancing political eunuchs.

So, what’s left? Since the parliamentarians have shunned and deserted us, maybe we should respond in kind. Just imagine if on election day we simply withheld our votes from all of them and wrote ‘Climate Change’ on our ballot papers.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve mostly lived rent free, not giving too much of a second thought about my impact on the environment. Things dramaAcally changed for me when I had children. I made a commitment to read more about perAnent issues - such as climate change - when my youngest was just 6 months.

As I began to understand the science of the anthropocene the new uncharted era we have entered thanks to carelessly polluAng our atmosphere and recklessly clearing much of the earth’s forests - I became deeply concerned for my children’ future. That is why I joined a small group of locals today, calling on the government to focus on a healthy recovery, not more fossil fuels, including gas.

The next generaAon, our young people, should be our government’s vested interest. But instead they are selling their future short, for a quick quid. The bisecAonal relaAonship between both parAes, corporately owned press and the coal/gas/minerals council, is crippling our democracy and blinding our poli%cians to act in our best interests.

Local campaign organiser Geoff Berry said: “The gas industry ‘bail-out’ announced by the Federal Government defies logic, economics, expert opinion and works against our internaAonal climate commitments.

Experts, states and territories and much of the public agrees that Australia has a chance to become a renewable energy superpower, and that we need a green COVID-19 recovery. A taxpayer-subsidised 'gasled recovery', boosAng emissions, while other industries suffer, is a fundamental breach of public trust.

“In the Eurobodalla, our horrific summer of bushfires gave us a glimpse into our disastrous climate future. Climate change-fuelled megafires, lives lost, countless cost to flora and fauna and communiAes destroyed and traumaAsed are already our reality, yet all we here from our federal leaders is spin, excuses and denial about the reality we face. Renewable energies are cheaper and safe, and it's a no-brainer. I am so proud of these informed young people who are standing up bravely in an adult way, while our leading poliAcians act like ignorant children."

As a doctor, it’s against the law for me to accept giCs or donaAons from pharmaceuAcal or other medical industries – these are safeguards for us, and for you, as paAents. These rules make doctors a more trusted profession.

So, how is it that poliAcians and poliAcal parAes can receive donaAons from polluAng fossil fuel industries?

According to data from Market Forces, In 2018-19, fossil fuel companies donated (a minimum of) $1,897,379 to the ALP, Liberal and NaAonal parAes. Our major parAes conAnue to vote against a Federal Independent Commission Against CorrupAon (ICAC). The (unelected) head of the ScoMo-appointed NaAonal COVID CoordinaAon Commission, making recommendaAons on billions of dollars of recovery spending, is gas company execuAve Nev Power.

How can we stand to see such brazen corrupAon, eroding any hope of meeAng our climate Paris agreements?

Charlie Bell, a reAree from Tomakin, agrees: “The kids care, it's their future. They need our support.”

Hoping things will get beGer just won’t cut is any more. We all need to pay an acAve part in being part of the future we choose.

Alice Ansara, Moruya mother of two, and local producer and radio star on 2EAR, shared her thoughts as to why she supports the strike…”At the very least, I want to be able to look my now 2 and 4 year old children in the eyes when they are older and tell them, 'darlings, I did everything that I could'. 100 Years Ago—September 25, 1920 LEASE OF NINDERRA.—The Ninderra dairy farm of 400 acres, which has been under the management of Mr. John Stuart for a few years, has been leased by H. E. Simpson to Mr. H. J. Thomson. The new lessee is placing Mr. and Mrs. Dave Mison in charge of the farm.

Vol 16 September 15th 2017 ACCIDENT.– On7th, Friday evening last Mr. Walter Doyle, line repairer, met with a painful accident through 28 December Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 20192017 severely cutting his arm with a tomahawk. Fortunately he was in the vicinity of the Hospital, whither he at once hurried and phoned for the doctor. The victim lost a quantity of blood through severing of an artery.

FOR SALE.– Mr. A.H. Costin, of Narooma advertises in this issue his well-known property at Tuross for sale by tender. The land is cleared, fenced and well watered, and contains 116 acres suitable for grazing or cultivating.

ANTHRAX FROM BRUSHES.– Some weeks ago the New South Wales Health Department issues a warning that there was a danger of contracting anthrax from shaving brushes imported from the East. A case has now been reported from Wodonga (Victoria) and it is said the victim contracted it from a shaving brush bought at Wagga. An official of the Health Department said that the danger was a very live one, and that the precautions recommended some weeks ago should be observed. Brushes should be immersed for a quarter of an hour in a 12 per cent. formalin solution having a temperature of 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

BEST-LOOKING MAN.– The committee in charge of the best-looking man competition in connection with the approaching C.E. Bazaar, announce that the seven leading names are:- Geo. Brown, Clive Burke, J.R. Collett, Thos. Coman, D.H. Lavis, G.A. Sanders, Clarrie Smith.

HAND FEEDING.– During the hard times experienced this year by dairy farmers, there are some who believe that it does not pay to feed. Here are figures supplied by a local farmer in a small way. He fed 19 cows for 15 weeks on chaff and bran and pollard at a total cost of £138 (average about 9/3 per cow per week). His returns showed a profit of £57 over cost of feed. Of course, after other expenses, such as rent, etc., there is nothing flash about the income, but he kept his small herd in condition, which makes all the difference in their work in the spring. If a cow will thus repay the money spent in feeding her through a bad time, with something to spare, surely it is bad policy to neglect it. Those 19 cows thus fed will in the spring outdistance cows that were not fed.—Milton “Times.”

SPOKE FACTORY. The spoke factory which was recently destroyed by fire at Bateman’s Bay is to be reconstructed on more modern lines.

PERSONAL AND OTHERWISE. Amongst the University passes listed in last week’s Sydney press is the name of Mr. Alan Annetts, son of Mr. Henry Annetts of Mogo, who has successfully completed the fourth year of his medical course.

Mr. Norman Boot, second son of the late Mr. Henry Boot, of Pompey Point, Moruya, has been promoted from the accountancy at West Wyalong N.S.W. Bank to the management of a new branch.

The price of Cricket material is making prospective clubs wonder whether the game is worth the candle. A very inferior bat now costs between £3 and £4, and decent balls are 25s each. One time the best bat could be got for 35s.

A robbery of some proportions took place at Cobargo last week, when Mr. W. N. Stone’s skin depot was broken into, and nearly a cwt. of first quality rabbit skins taken. The “Chronicle” states that footprints indicate that a lady assisted in the removal.

Working closely with Transport for NSW and Council, project construcAon contractor John Holland is commissioning a public artwork as part of the $274 million Batemans Bay Bridge replacement project due for compleAon in early 2023.The commissioned artwork will be installed in a 25 square metre area on the southern bank of the Clyde River, close to new bridge pedestrian underpass and Batemans Bay CBD. The chosen artwork must: consider the area's shared Aboriginal and European history, reect community sensibiliAes and aspiraAons, acknowledge the iconic and historic former bridge and respond to and enhance the unique natural beauty of the locaAon. ACer so many months of uncertainty, turmoil and angst experienced by our greater community, the South Coast Pastel Society has decided to forge ahead and put on an exhibiAon during the coming school holiday period. We are inviAng all visitors and the community to view our wonderful array of new art works produced by our members at this Spring Art ExhibiAon. Commencing at 1pm on 1st October the exhibiAon will nd run unAl 7 October with daily opening hours from 2 October 10am-4pm, entry is by gold coin donaAon and proceeds assist the Surf Club.

Pastel is one of the oldest art forms, can be expressed in so many ways, buGery, smooth, textured and very painterly, and works by our arAsts will showcase the mulAple applicaAons expressing diversity, subject, style, colour and use. Given that many of our arAsts also pracAce in other mediums, this exhibiAon will also feature works of their choosing and will be presented in framed and unframed works. All works are for sale at affordable prices along with a selecAons of arAsts cards.

In line with current Government COVID-19 restricAons and policies, the society will ensure that measures are put into place to pracAce social distancing by only allowing 15 persons at one Ame, implemenAng a sterilisaAon staAon, as well as keeping a register of visitors.

sports Broulee Runners Wed September 23rd The run has conAnued as an isolated event for the 28th week. It is anAcipated that we may be able to get together to run a 5-kilometre event Vol 16 September 15th 2017on Wednesday14 October 2020 at 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 2018 5PM. AApril Covid safety plan is being developed and because of 111 July 27th 12th 2019 the need to keep social distance it is not safe at this stage to have the usual three events starAng at the same Ame. As restricAons are liCed, we can look at incorporaAng the other events.

The principle used at other distance running events is “Get in, Run, Get Out”. This means the usual socialising will not be possible.

There will not be any Ame restricAon on people parAcipaAng in the 5-kilometres. Therefore, everyone is welcome to parAcipate provided there is sufficient light to see only when it gets dark will the “hook come out”.

Special menAon is given to Andrew McPherson (pictured) whose family have an impressive 450 runs between them. He has a personal total of 228. He is also a long-distance runner, bike rider, member of the surf club and bushfire hero.

Chris WraIen Wins Out In Tight Contest at Tuross Head Vets Golf ConAnuing the strong fields registering for Tuross Head Vets golf on a Wednesday, 63 players registered for the Single Stableford event this week.

Scores were again very compeAAve despite recent coring and sanding of the greens with four players equal top scoring on 24 Stableford points. Count back results proved Chris WraGen to be the winner from Runner Up Gail Rogers and Peter Coffey, with Gail's husband Len rounding out the last of the major prize winners.

Minor prizes went to Dorothy Madden, Steve Swanbury and David Williams on 23, Mike Birks, Ron Hanlon, Solveig Olsson and Ross Davidson on 22, Stephen Crossling, Bruce Ware, Margaret Downey, Gayle Macalpine, Terry Lunn and Greg Smith on 21, and finally Terry Swanbury on 20 aCer a six way count back. Rick Brake took out the Bradman award, a three way count back being required on the day's lowest scores recorded.

Windy much??! Well that’s spring on the coast!! Trying to find a spot out of the wind has been one of the more difficult challenges this week. For those land based fishos in the river, the tree lined banks are offering the best opAons to find a spot out of the wind.

The southern side on the river from riverside park where the weekend markets are held down the river have plenty of quiet sheltered spots available. On the northern side, in front of the airport up to the campground also offers good opAons for those looking to get out of the wind. Which side of the river you choose, will of course depend on where the wind is coming from.

BoaAes are of course more exposed to the wind on the river. All you can do is try and find a spot where the you are more sheltered.

As for the fishing, things have been a bit on the quiet side. There have been a few flathead caught around the airport flats and Preddy’s wharf, but numbers have a bit on the low side, with a fair bit of water between fish. I would try live nippers as a bait opAon for the best chance of finding a fish. These can be pumped on the Garlandtown flats on the northern side of the river at low Ade. A bucket and aerator are all you need to keep them alive for a few hours, if you aren’t going to use them straight away.

Tuross River.

Flathead have been the main talking point along the potato point side of the system this week. Again there is a lot of water between fish, with those gecng a few having to work for the fish. Low water temps sAll have the fish on the sleepy side.

Numbers of estuary perch are sAll being reported around the Tuross boat shed areas, with the odd mulloway underneath these schools also being reported. Live nippers or small soC plasAcs are working well here. Up around four ways, you could expect to find the odd bream in the deeper holes and surrounding snags.

PaAence and exploraAon are going to be the best opAons to finding fish this weekend. With the Tuross system offering lots of sheltered opAons if the wind persists.

Rock and beach.

There have sAll been numbers of salmon for those willing to try and expose themselves to a good sand blasAng on the beaches. With the southern beaches offering the beGer spoils. Try around Pedro and the Congo areas this weekend. Fingers crossed the wind stays away.

Due to the high winds, there haven’t been reports from the rocks this week. Keep an eye on the water for waves before venturing onto a ledge. No fish is worth a potenAal drowning.

Offshore.

Reports here have been a bit slow due to the winds. But for those that have got out, there are sAll reasonable catches of flathead in 30-40m of water mixed in with the odd snapper.

We haven’t had any game crews reports this week, so I couldn’t comment on what is running out wide.
