editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial,

With Spring School Holidays fast approaching (Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October) there is hope that there will be a return Vol 16 September 15th 2017 to a degree of normal for the South East as we welcome back visitors to the 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 region.

While many locals and businesses dependent on tourism have been severely impacted by the bushfires, the poor summer, and then Covid there is a sense of rejuvenaFon as you wander the streets of Moruya to find shops open, good stocks, happy faces and a sense of prosperity with strong evidence that locals are supporFng locals in local retail.

But ours is not a region that is solely reliant on retail, industry and services. SiGng atop our economy is tourism and it needs visitors to keep it afloat and vibrant. So many of our community rely on visitors for employment making it criFcal as to how we promote ourselves to the world outside, what we offer and how we adjust to an ever changing world.

Take for instance the way we welcome visitors. In days of old a visitor would arrive at an InformaFon Centre and pick up a map, some brochures of local aJracFons and acFviFes and even book their accommodaFon. But then along came the internet.

Think of your own travels. Most of us have a clear understanding of what to expect of a place before we arrive. We have already explored accommodaFon opFons and established these in proximity to where we want to go and what we want to see. We book online, selecFng our preference of accommodaFon type, locaFon and budget and then pay receiving immediate confirmaFon. Gone too for most are the days of stopping to pick up a map.

We now have devices that know exactly where we are and can guide us to exactly where we want to go.

The flyers and brochures of acFviFes and services that are stocked at InformaFon Centres have also become a Fng of the past for most of our visitors as they have already researched the region via the internet to establish what acFviFes and sights are available so that they can best prepare (kayaks, fishing rods, bikes). Rarely do we have a visitor arrive who has not already researched on the net their holiday opFons.

Editorial—con$nued region with most site visitors poring over the Must See and Must Do pages and flicking through the brochures that once were to be found at InformaFon Centres.

Vol 16 September 15th The quesFon of7th, how2017 to respond to the technology changes and the changes in the needs and informaFon 28 December Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 20192017 demands of visitors was one of the issues discussed this week with Eurobodalla Tourism and members of the local Chambers of Commerce. For some Fme Eurobodalla Council has idenFfied that it intends to sell the Batemans Bay InformaFon Centre as it is surplus to use. It iniFally also wanted to divest itself of the Narooma Visitors Centre but instead handed over the centre with its historic lighthouse display to the volunteers of Montague Arts and CraKs.

Discussions with the Chambers focused around a 2018 survey carried out of visitors and the results confirmed that the demand for informaFon centres was very low to the point of not being cost effecFve. The survey revealed that visitors were internet savvy, arrived with accommodaFon pre-booked and that they had a familiarity with the region and had done their own research on acFviFes and opFons.

The Chambers heard of new opFons that were being considered such as walk-up touch-screen informaFon staFons located around the five principle towns of Batemans Bay, Mogo, Moruya, Narooma and Tilba. They were also told that an alternate to having an informaFon Centre would be to have Chamber members erect informaFon stands in their shops to carry town brochures and any brochures provided by local operators.

Eurobodalla Tourism has recently rebadged itself with a new website, a new logo of “all kinds of natural” and new video and social media campaigns aimed at the more switched on potenFal (and exisFng ) visitors.

They have employed copywriters to compose seducFve blogs and are placing a major emphasis on using the array of internet tools to give the region an internet presence.

So what of the coming school holidays and the approaching summer? Are the Eurobodalla campaigns on social media enough to drive visitors to the region as the enFre Australian tourism market is in compeFFve hyperdrive for the DomesFc Travel needs of a ‘landlocked’ Australian with no where else to go?

It is criFcal for our own local tourism dependent economy to fare well in the coming year, to iniFally recover and then to prosper. Our Chambers need to widen their membership and encourage and embrace new ideas so that each township prospers, each and all businesses flourish and that the region as a whole benefits by way of employment and service provision.

Here is hoping that WE ALL GET ON BOARD and do what we can, acknowledging the vital role that tourism plays in the well being of our local economy that employs so many in our community.

Library grounds for green wisdom Vol 16 September 15th 2017

Now there’s inspiraFon to be found outside the buildings too, with work on the new water-wise and wildlife-friendly garden well underway.

Eurobodalla Council’s manager of community development Kim Bush says schools, community groups and even passers-by are welcome to make themselves at home in the new outdoor spaces surrounding the Bas and Moruya Library.

“There will be plenty of spaces to sit and relax, and we’re encouraging anyone interested to take a more acFve role, helping to look aKer and develop the garden,” Ms Bush said.

“It’s also an opportunity for our community to learn more about the benefits of low-maintenance and waterwise naFve gardens as habitat for local animals, which are easy to maintain and can be beauFful and full of colour.”

Ms Bush said Council’s parks crew and sustainability team had been integral to the project; installing the paths and large rock features, and selecFng and planFng naFve flora to provide year-round colour.

“It was lovely to see Eurobodalla Landcare join in, with members spending a morning helping get plants in the ground earlier this week,” she said.

Council’s natural resources officer Courtney Fink-Downes said the garden was a model that people could draw from to make their own bush-friendly gardens at home.

“It’s been a tough year for local fauna and residents can take steps at home to give naFve animals a chance and reduce their environmental impact,’ Ms Fink-Downes said.

“That’s simple things like removing invasive weeds, mulching garden beds to retain water and nutrients, and keeping pets inside at night. Don’t forget Council runs regular plant swaps, where we give you locally-grown naFve plants in exchange for your invasive weeds, and we do free home visits where we can provide pracFcal advice on creaFng a more sustainable garden.”

community The BIG weekend is here where Ted will lose his hair in support of good mate Steve Many in the Moruya area know these two; Ted Butler and Steve Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Doyle.

Ted and2019 Steve 28 December 7th, 2017 are good mates. And as mates they sFck Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 together through good and bad. Of late things haven't turned out so well for Steve.

Steve Doyle is a well loved character in the South Coast surfing fraternity, he is such a great character with a big heart and has an incredible posiFve influence on people. In recent years Steve was the Post Master at Moruya Post Office and is well known and respected in the local community. Unfortunately Steve has contracted Motor Neurone Disease and Ted has decide he wanted to raise money for research into the treatment and cure for this terrible illness.

Ted said “While fundraising for Motor Neurone Disease my own personal challenge in this fundraiser is that at the end of 8 weeks from commencement I will have my hair cut SHORT this Saturday Sept 12th!!! For those who know me it has been decades since my hair was short.

Healthy communi$es, recovery and Seniors Week grants available Eurobodalla Council is offering community groups up to $2,000 funding to run acFviFes that improve health and support recovery in the community.

The Council’s Healthy CommuniFes and Recovery Grants are available to eligible not-for-profits, with special consideraFon given to projects that assist the community’s disaster recovery.

Council’s community development coordinator Zoe Morgan said it was a great opportunity for organisaFons to grab some cash to help our community reconnect and rebuild post bushfires and COVID. “AcFvity opFons are broad – it could be training for volunteers, a craK day get-together, outdoor cricket or an excursion to one of our local aJracFons,” she said.

“Applying is easy – all you need to do is think up a great idea and apply for funds to make it a reality.”

Meanwhile, grants of up to $500 are also available for not-for-profits to put toward the cost of hosFng an event or acFvity for next year's Seniors FesFval.

ApplicaFons for both grant programs are now open and close Wednesday 4 October 2020.

Organisa$onal Restructure Proposal Released For Staff And Union Consulta$on Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

The Southern NSW Local Health District (SNSWLHD) has released a ConsultaFon Paper to staff and unions detailing a restructure of the organisaFon that ensures there will be no forced redundancies.

SNSWLHD Chief ExecuFve Margaret BenneJ said the restructure, which has been on going over the past four years, would allow the District to meet the health needs of local communiFes both now and into the future, with the establishment of a range of new posiFons and opportuniFes for our staff focusing on paFent care.

“It is criFcal to note at the outset that there will be no forced redundancies and, indeed, we will create 27 new posiFons. All of our staff will remain employed following implementaFon of the proposed restructure. There is an absolute commitment to support staff through this process,” Ms BenneJ said.

“Twenty-seven new posiFons will be created in the restructure that go to the heart of paFent care. In an environment of ongoing workforce growth, I am confident the proposed new structure will best enable Southern NSW Local Health District to meet the needs of the community we serve both now and into the future.”

The District will now undertake four weeks of final consultaFon that will build on feedback previously provided by staff and unions. The vast majority of over 3000 staff are not impacted at all by the restructure.

However, 50 full Fme equivalent roles (53 people) in managerial and support will be directly impacted.

AddiFonally, approximately 94 staff members will be impacted through changes to reporFng lines and changes of grades.

“The District will reallocate and support impacted employees to move to other meaningful roles, and take up vacancies as they become available over the next year,” Ms BenneJ said.

“To the greatest extent possible, all of these staff will be matched into like posiFons. “The main focus now is to engage in consultaFon with staff and unions over the next four weeks.”

Three million over three years for a safer Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 Tomakin Road 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Eurobodalla Council is improving road safety, drainage and property access on a 1.4-kilometre secFon of Tomakin Road, east of Dunns Creek Road.

The work is the first stage in a three-year project to bring the whole of Tomakin Road up to a standard appropriate for a major distributor road.

Council’s director of infrastructure Warren Sharpe said the safety upgrade had been idenFfied as a priority, due to the number of crashes on Tomakin Road and rapid growth in traffic along the route.

“Tomakin Road is one of the shire’s busiest, providing a key link between Mogo and coastal growth areas, as well as servicing Mogo Zoo,” Mr Sharpe said.

“We are really pleased the NSW Government is supporFng our community, taking a whole-of-route approach to road safety rather than focussing on individual black spots. It’s a proacFve approach to reducing road-related trauma and saving lives on our country roads.

“The upcoming work includes extending road shoulders, enhancing clear zones, a widened centreline, line marking, signage, guardrails and strengthened road pavement. There will be limited vegetaFon clearing essenFal to achieve road-safety outcomes, and we’ll be talking to residents about opportuniFes for replanFng – as we’ve done on other projects.”

Mr Sharpe said residents could expect heavy machinery along the road: “Traffic control will be in place and commuters using Tomakin Road should expect delays and, where pracFcal, should take alternaFve routes for the duraFon of work, between now and December”.

Transport for NSW is providing $3 million through the Safer Roads Program over the next three years for the Tomakin Road safety upgrade. Stage 1 will uFlise one-third of the funding and Council will contribute a further $260,000 to rebuild failing road pavement while crews are onsite

River of Art FesFval organisers say "We are thrilled to have Tim de Haan (Phibs) curaFng this part of the FesFval for us. Lucky Escape for Fishermen Underscores Importance of Wearing Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Lifejackets Volunteers from Marine Rescue Jervis Bay have recovered a 4.5 metre fishing boat that overturned in rough condiFons at sunset last night, throwing two fishermen overboard off Point Perpendicular at the entrance to the bay.

NSW Police report that the two 31-year-old men were fishing when a large boat hit their boat, capsizing it.

The men called Triple Zero (000), sparking a sea and air search off Jervis Bay. A crew from Marine Rescue Jervis Bay on board Jervis Bay 40 immediately deployed to search between Murrays Beach and Point Perpendicular. The missing men were located by the Toll Ambulance Rescue helicopter and winched to safety about 6.40pm. Police said neither man was wearing a lifejacket at the Fme they were rescued.

Jervis Bay 40 conFnued to scour the water for the upturned boat – feared to be floaFng just below the surface, posing a navigaFon hazard to other boats in the area - before the search was suspended last night.

Two vessels from MR Jervis Bay headed out early this morning to resume the search.

The fishermen’s boat was located offshore by a Navy vessel before JB 40, with Unit Commander Tony Dagger at the helm, retrieved it and returned it to shore.

UC Dagger said the rescue underscored the vital importance of wearing a lifejacket when out on the water.

“But for the quick response of the emergency services, this rescue could have had a very different outcome,” he said.

“With the summer boaFng season upon us, it’s vital that everyone on every boat heading out on the water is wearing a lifejacket.

Dunns Creek Road, Malua Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Bay set12thto 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 2018 111April July 27th 2019 reopen on September 18th Dunns Creek Road has been closed to through traffic from the 25th of May to 18 September 2020 whilst works were carried out to the 1.4km secFon of road south of The Ridge Road, between 376 and 428 Dunns Creek Road, Malua Bay. Commuters were sFll able to access Dunns Creek Road from either end but were unable to pass through the construcFon site while traffic controllers escorted vehicles to properFes within the construcFon site when necessary.

The four month closure was necessary to safely undertake the earthworks to realign and upgrade a 700 -metre secFon of road In all Council is upgrading 4.35 km of Dunns Creek Road from The Ridge Road, Malua Bay to Woodlands Road, Woodlands saying "The project will improve safety on secFons of the road and is part of our ongoing road reconstrucFon program to improve and maintain the road network for current and future generaFons."

Council advise that Dunns Creek Road, which connects George Bass Drive and Tomakin Road in the hinterland behind the coastal suburbs from Batemans Bay to Broulee, is a rural distributor that has achieved a higher than average increase in traffic over the past ten years.

Subsequently, vehicle crashes have risen.

The road will be improved by: realigning the curves north of Dunns Creek Bridge widening the road to provide 3.25m lanes and 1.25m shoulders marking road edge lines installing retro reflecFve pavement markers on centre and edge lines installing curve alignment markers and new curve advisory speed signs improving drainage installing guardrail.

The project will improve property access and road safety for motorists and cyclists.

Moruya Community Workshed When the ďŹ res raged through Mogo earlier this year, the Woodies Guild lost their home base in the Old Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Gold Rush Colony.

They lost not only their accommodaFon but all of their expensive equipment.

They are currently liaising with Eurobodalla Shire Council about ďŹ nding alternaFve accommodaFon but this could take a long Fme depending on availability of a site and subsequent replacement of equipment.

When the Moruya Community Workshed heard of their plight, its members voted to open their doors to the group, inviFng them to become part of the Workshed and share the use of their equipment.

Several members of the Woodies have now visited the Workshed to meet its members over a cuppa and to view their Shed. Everyone is hopeful of a conFnuing relaFonship between the two groups.

The Moruya Community Workshed is open to both men and women and is located within the grounds of Moruya High School. It is currently open every Wednesday and Friday. Members will be holding their AGM on Wednesday 30 September at 10am so now might be a good opportunity to join them and work on that project you have been thinking about for so long. "Honey's ongoing care and surgery follow-up will be paid for by RSPCA's Eurobodalla Branch.

"We sent out an appeal to find a convalescent home for Honey, a 10-month old American Staffy, while she recovers from a badly broken leg. Honey came from the Batemans Bay area, but was sent to Sydney for specialist vet care at RSPCA's Yagoona Shelter. She had the required surgery and is on the mend, but she was unhappy at the shelter" "She is now being well looked aKer while she recovers".

"Readers can help the branch in this by recycling their containers at any of the Return and Earn recycle points in Eurobodalla, and choosing to donate their refund to RSPCA Eurobodalla. Due to the restricFons in place for community sport due to COVID-19, we know that Nippers will look different this season but we will conFnue to ensure that children have fun at the beach while parFcipaFng in the important lessons of beach safety, lifesaving and surf sport.

Victory in the Kitchen: The Life of Churchill’s Cook—a review by Trevor Moore Annie Profile Vol 16 Gray, September 15thBooks, 2017 2020, ISBN 978-1-78816-044-5, 390pp 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

There is a concerted effort by historians today to restore women to their righaul place in history. On my reading pile is Nicola Tallis’ Uncrowned Queen which is about Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII and grandmother of Henry VIII. She was a mover and shaker in Tudor Fmes and largely unregarded unFl now. I am waiFng for a biography of Noor-un-nisa Inayat Khan who won the George Cross aKer being executed by the Nazis in 1944. She was the first female wireless operator to be sent from the UK into occupied France to aid the French Resistance during World War II. These are but two women whose contribuFons to history need to be wriJen about and discussed.

The subject this review, Georgina Landamere née Young is another such woman. Though her contribuFon to history may seem more prosaic than either Margaret Beaufort of Noor Inayat Khan, that contribuFon was recognised by Churchill. She was born in 1882 in Heraordshire and had she been a man she would have been head chef at any of the great London restaurants. She stared work at the age of 15 as a scullery maid and, having decided cooking was her thing, she worked her way up through the ranks. When she started she would rise at 0500 and go to bed at 2200. She would peel vegetables and scour pans in between those hours. Life was not easy. She carefully selected the people she worked for and as a result she became a leading society cook or, more properly, chef though she was usually refereed to as a cook. She married a Frenchman, Paul Landamere, in 1909 just two months aKer the death of his first wife. Landamere, who was 20 years her senior, was also a cook and they almost certainly met at a catering gig.

We do not now a great deal about the life of Georgina Landamere, notwithstanding this book. We might have had a fuller account of her life as she write an autobiography but her daughter and son-in-law persuaded her that it was not worth reading so she destroyed it. Her granddaughter managed to save 26 pages. You may wonder at this, as I did, but in the 1960s the idea of having been in service was as difficult as the idea of being “in trade” was to the Victorians. As a result, Annie Gray, who is a writer on the history of food and dining, uses what we know of Georgina’s life to look at the way domesFc service changed in the first half of the 20th century and at the way food has changed in that Fme. Through the people that she cooked for she had become acquainted with the Churchills and when the war broke out (81 years ago on 3 September 1939) she suggested to ClemenFne Churchill that she be their cook. Working for the Churchills was not easy. They were not easy people to get in with, though Georgina formed a very close relaFonship with ClemenFne. Cooking for them during the war meant moving between the kitchen in Downing Street, a kitchen underground in the Cabinet War Rooms and Chequers (the country home of the BriFsh Prime Minister). Flexibility was important: she never quite knew what Fme dinner should be nor how many diners there would be.

This is a fascinaFng book whether you are interested in food, in the history of domesFc service, or in the beagle weekly : Vol 172 September 11th 2020

It reads like this: ½Vol lb16 buJer beaten to2017 a cream, 7 eggs, yolks & whites separated, ½ lb best chocolate grated and heated and September 15th 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 then beaten up with the buJer, with 8 oz sugar and 8 oz of dried flour and 4 oz ground almonds, and 1 teaspoon of sal volaFle, bake in a slack oven.

It is the “slack oven” that got me. I decided to try this. As it happens it has an error in the recipe (at least there’s no way you could sFr the baJer with 8 ounces of flour). Here’s what we did …

Georgina Landemare’s Chocolate Cake This cake is quite heavy and is less chocolatey than you would expect from 250 gms of dark chocolate. My daughter and I enjoyed it but my wife was less enthusiasFc. Ingredients 250 gms buJer 250 gms dark chocolate, we used Lindt 250 gms sugar 125 gms flour (note the original says 250 gms, you could probably go to 90 grams) 125 gms ground almonds 7 eggs, separated 1 teaspoon baking powder (this is the modern version of sal volaFle) Method Grease and line with baking paper a 26 cm springform cake Fn, Grate the chocolate and melt in the microwave. Heat in 15 second bursts sFrring in between. Set aside.

Cream the buJer and sugar. Add the egg yolks and whisk together. Add the chocolate to the baJer Mix up the sugar, flour, ground almonds and baking powder and add to the baJer Bake at 150 – 160°C for 30 – 40 minutes unFl the middle of the cake is 95°C or check that a skewer comes out clean.

The resulFng cake is about 3 cm high: you could make a higher cake with (say) a 22 cm cake Fn. Icing We iced the cake with a blood orange frosFng as follows: 125 grams cream cheese 90 grams unsalted buJer, soKened 100 grams cups icing sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract Zest and juice (about 30 ml) of a blood orange Using a hand mixer, beat cream cheese and buJer unFl smooth. With the motor running, slowly add sugar and vanilla; beat unFl smooth.

We grated orange chocolate over the icing and added liJle squares of orange chocolate. It would probably go with cucumber sandwiches with their crusts cut off. beagle weekly : Vol 172 September 11th 2020

UNION OF CHURCHES.– The vote on this subject closed on 8th inst., and we are informed the returns from the Moruya Presbyterian Church district is: - For Union, Communicants 63; Adherents 48; total 111; against 7. Majority for Union at Moruya 104.

WHALES CAPTURED.– Last week Master-Whaler George Davidson, of Eden, secured two right whales, the value of which, conjointly, is roughly estimated as between £700 and £800. The owners of half the booty approached the local banking authorities and asked them whether it might not be possible to accept the whale as collateral for £500 worth of Peace Loan bonds. The whale, or rather what was left of it after the killers had done their work, was inspected. The advice of experts was taken, and it was decided that the captured mammal could be accepted as collateral to the tune of £500.

CLOSURE OF RIVER.– It will be remembered that about 12 months ago through a petition signed by the leading anglers and others, the Moruya River above the bridge was closed against net fishing. A few months later Fisherman S. Fitzpatrick (late A.I.F.) and others, counter-petitioned, with the result that the former proclamation was partly revoked and the river opened from the 1st July until 30th September, 1920. The Progress Association, as well as the Shire Council, then took a hand in the matter and made strong representations to our State Members to have the matter reconsidered. Mr Carter informs us that he is in receipt of reply from each Member, intimating that the Chief Secretary has decided not to interfere with the existing closure at present, and the river will therefore be closed from 1st October next until April 1921.

AN AEROLITE.– A brilliant meteor of considerable size passed over Moruya about 8.20 Friday night. It appeared to be very close to earth, as its strong light dazzled those who witnessed it. It was travelling from north-east to south-west. On the following night about 11.30 the people awakened from their sleep by a terrific explosion, which shook the houses with violence. Those, however, who had not retired and happened to be out-of-doors saw, prior to the explosion, a meteor of unusual brilliance, and at a very low elevation in the heavens, travelling at top speed from East to west. Presently the ball of fire was seen to break into fragments, and simultaneously a loud explosion vibrated through the air.

BATEMAN’S BAY. (From our Correspondent) A disastrous fire broke out at the Spoke Factory owned by Messrs. John Perry & Co. Proprietary Ltd. on Sunday morning last. It was first seen by some men who were camping near. At the time, about 3 am., the western side near the engine room was ablaze. Efforts were made with extinguishers, but with no result. By 4.30 am. the whole factory was burning fiercely. There was a large stock of both raw and finished material. This consisted of spokes and naves. Outside were thousands of split spokes, many of which had to be removed. Nothing could be done to save the valuable machines, owing to the intense heat. Mr. Albert Perry, who is the local manager, was fortunate to save his office books at considerable risk.

This factory, established some 20 years ago has been one of the chief industries of the Bay. About 10 or 11 years ago it was destroyed by fire and was re-built. Since that time the industry has been through many changes. The principal trouble has been the irregular supplies of the raw material. But since the beginning of this year an improvement has been made, and by judicious bonuses allowed to the splitters, supplies of both ironbark and spotted gum billets have been ensured. The company has thus been enabled to provide work for nearly 50 hands outside and inside. This means something in the margin of £200 shortage per week in wages for the workers of the Bay and vicinity. Everyone is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the managing directory, Mr. John Perry, who is in Melbourne. Until his arrival details as to the insurance are not known.

The loss is estimated at £5000, and the stock is insured in the Palatine Fire Insurance Co. The public extend their sympathy to the owners, who have always extended fair treatment to their employees. beagle weekly : Vol 172 September 11th 2020

FiJy years on: Simon & Garfunkel

by Trevor Moore This month, on 16 September 2020 to be precise, my good friend Macman, a.k.a. Neil Mack will be tripping the light fantasFc on 2EARFM in the fourth of his series of albums Fi.y Years On. There are two classics that were released that were released in September 1970. On the 19th Neil Young released his 3rd studio album, A.er the Gold Rush and, on the 23rd, Santana released Abraxus. Both records did well: Young’s album went double plaFnum in the US and the UK, reaching number 13 in Australia. The success of Abraxus is, strangely, mixed though overall it was a commercial success especially in the US where it stormed to number 1 and went quintuple plaFnum (i.e. 5,000,000 copies). Its success in the UK was more muted: it reached number 7 but with sales of only about 100,000.

It was number 1 in Australia. I was in the UK at the Fme of its release, and as a member of the record buying public, I certainly noFced it. My sister was, and remains, nuts about it. Both A.er the Gold Rush and Abraxus were important albums to have lying on the coffee table.

But you have read the Ftle of this piece. It says, “Simon & Garfunkel” and you would be expecFng that Macman would be playing the last studio album released by the duo in January 1970: Bridge Over Troubled Water.

That is slightly over 50 years ago. In 1969 Mike Nichols, director of The Graduate had been chosen to film Joseph Heller’s novel Catch-22 (which we all remember from the 1960s) and he offered Art Garfunkel a part. As a result, Art was in Mexico when most of the Bridge tracks were recorded and several are essenFally solo efforts by Paul Simon. As work on the album proceeded Simon and Garfunkel realised that their partnership had outlived its usefulness. Art was Fring of what he later described as his “underdog role”: Simon wrote the songs, Garfunkel just sang them: as he said, "I felt envious of Paul's wriFng and playing, especially onstage, where I had nothing to do with my hands”. As Bridge Over The very early days: Simon & Garfunkel as Tom & Jerry in the Troubled Water topped the singles and album charts on both sides of 1950s. the AtlanFc, the pair went their separate ways; Art to a part on the movie Carnal Knowledge and Paul to make his brilliant eponymous solo album.

But you would be mistaken if you expected Macman to be playing Bridge as the September offering for his Fi.y Years On series. He is nothing if not capricious, is Macman, and that is why he plays such an eclecFc mix of music on his shows. Eleven years aKer Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon and Garfunkel reunited for the Concert in Central Park. As the New York Times reported the day aKer the concert “several hundred thousand people seeking remembrance of the 1960s carpeted the Great Lawn of Central Park yesterday evening for the free reunion concert of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.” So, although the Concert in Central Park was played 39 years ago, Macman has decided that since the 1960s were nearly the 1970s and that 39 is close to 50 … well, for whatever reason … he has chosen to showcase the album that came out of the Concert in Central Park, which is Simon and Garfunkel’s first of four live albums. There were a lot of people, but the concert was not as financially successful as had been hoped.

The Concert in the Park was a free concert held on 19 September 1981 in Central Park, New York. By the mid-1970s the park was deterioraFng: the city did not have the money to maintain the city’s “green lung”. A non-profit organisaFon called the Central Park Conservancy was established to raise money that would restore and maintain the park. The Concert in the Park was targeted to raise $100,000 for preservaFon of the park through sales of Tshirts and buJons celebraFng the concert. As the New York Times reported: “by mid-aKernoon, the vans dispensing the Art Deco T-shirts were already out of the popular sizes.” In spite of Paul Simon’s fears, the concert was a huge success, at least in terms of aJendance. The then mayor (Ed Koch) esFmated that 500,000 people turned up; the police department esFmated 400,000. But what’s in a 100,000 here and there? It’s sFll a big number. The police had done one of their customary drug sweeps that morning and made 10 arrests.

When Paul Simon thanked the Fire Department, the Police Department, the Parks Department and Mayor Koch, he also thanked ''the guys selling loose joints who are giving us half their income tonight.''

A Long Island promoter, Ron Delsener, called Paul Simon on behalf of the Central Park Conservancy. Simon owned an apartment that overlooked Central Park and Delsener’s pitch was that Simon should do a free concert to signal that the neighbourhood was up and coming. The idea was for a solo concert by Paul Simon, but he called Art Garfunkel and invited him to join him for 10 songs toward the end of the show. The problem for Simon was that this would mean that he would appear to be the warm-up act for the return of the erstwhile duo. The three weeks of rehearsals leading up to the show were fraught with difficulFes. At one point there was an idea that each would do solo spots before returning as a duo. Garfunkel wanted to perform the songs exactly as they had performed them all those years previously; him singing and Simon on acousFc guitar. But Simon couldn’t play the whole concert due to an injury, so they brought in an 11-piece band. They quarrelled over whether or not to wear hairpieces. Simon said yes, Garfunkel said no; Simon won.

Nevertheless, a few days before the concert Simon told the New York Times that he and his partner were “back from the boulevard of broken duos” and a 50 metre stage cosFng three quarters of a million dollars

Reading FiKy years on: Simon & Garfunkel by Trevor Moore conFnues was built. Mayor Ed Koch opened the show: “Ladies and Gentlemen: Simon & Garfunkel” and the crowd erupted. The people cheering would have included those who remembered the duo from the 1960s (and possibly even as Tom & Jerry from the 1950s). There would have been those who were there just because the concert had been so hyped beforehand. But aKer a short pause, the duo launched into Mrs Robinson.

Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th,album 2017 is clear and the performance and harmonies are flawless … as you would expect The sound on the Vol 48 April 2018 111 July 27th 12th 2019 but the 11 piece band means that it is not the song from the movie (The Graduate). All the songs are wellexecuted … they move from Mrs Robinson and on through Homeward Bound, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and the set closes with The Boxer. It includes Paul Simon’s 1975 S9ll Crazy A.er All These Years and, perhaps as a throwback to their days as Tom & Jerry in the 1950s a cover of the Everly Brothers’ Wake Up Li;le Susie. Listening to their cover the influence of the Everly Brothers on Simon & Garfunkel is as clear as the nose on the end of your face.

But any hopes of a permanent reunion were not to be realised. They toured together in 1982 and they planned a studio album that would have been called Think Too Much, but it was not be. That album became Paul Simon’s Hearts and Bones. They performed together in 1990 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and again in 1993. In 2004 they played Madison Square Garden that resulted in the album Old Friends: Live on Stage.

In terms of aJendance, the Concert in the Park was successful: it remains one of the top 10 biggest concerts in the US. But in terms of its contribuFon to the Central Park Conservancy it was less successful. Against a target of $100,000 it made $51,000. But it did make a lot of people happy if only for an evening.

Mayor Innes Tries to Have It Both Ways, But is Caught Out by Reality The Beagle Editor, Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Vol 28 December 7th, 2017

48 111April July 12th 2019 IVol found my27th way2018 to Mayor Innes’ press release responding to the NSW Bushfire Inquiry via means of the latest Council newsleJer. According to the newsleJer, “We” (I naively presumed this meant “Council”) had run “our” emergency operaFons “from a hall and 4 plasFc tubs”. The thought briefly crossed my mind that (if true) this state of affairs could indeed have explained many of the sub-opFmal outcomes from last summer, but I then realised this was yet another instance of the markeFng fabulaFons which crop up everywhere these days in the pronouncements of poliFcians, senior government officials and business leaders.

How do I know the Mayor’s statement was a fabricaFon? Well, I briefly saw inside the emergency operaFons centre during the fire crisis, and it contained computers, desks, phones and other everyday office equipment – somewhat more than 4 plasFc tubs! Granted, it wasn’t ‘state of the art’, but it was quite a reasonable sized hall, and leagues ahead of what bushfire evacuees were expected to put up with in the official Eurobodalla evacuaFon centres during the emergency. Evacuees were frequently reminded that the centres were “lifeboats, not luxury liners” (or similar words) in an effort to forestall any inconvenient quesFons about the state of these evacuaFon faciliFes. Ironically enough, when I saw the emergency operaFons centre, I was struck by the fact that immediately next door was a Council-owned community centre which offered many of the services either missing or seriously stretched at the evacuaFon centres, yet this facility remained closed throughout the fire emergency.

I then realised that, if the Mayor’s statement was indeed accurate, it would be a serious indictment of a wholly inadequate response to the fire emergency which began in August 2019, and ran for many weeks in the Eurobodalla prior to the fateful day of 31st December. Did the Mayor seriously expect us to believe all “we” could muster in the face of a prolonged and ongoing emergency were 4 plasFc tubs and a hall? With my interest piqued, I then clicked on the link in the Council News to open up the Mayor’s full “wideranging” response.

As I began to read through the press release it eventually became clear that the “We” menFoned in the newsleJer was not Council, but in fact included the Rural Fire Service and other NSW agencies. This made much more sense now, as anyone who has read Council’s bushfire submissions will have come across the frequent message “The primary agency for bushfires is the NSW Rural Fire Service. The RFS is an independent State Government agency and does not act on behalf of Council”, or words to that effect. In its official communicaFons, Council goes to great pains to carefully differenFate itself from the conveniently warm and fuzzy “We” used in its public newsleJer AKer having clarified my understanding of the word “We”, I then considered specific issues raised by the Mayor. “Hazard reducFon” of course got a big run, whereas “cultural burning” was not menFoned at all, and in the Mayor’s world, the fires only seem to run out of NaFonal Parks or State Forests and into private land, but apparently never the other way round, from private lands into government lands. So far the “wideranging” press release had preJy much Fcked the usual boxes, with an obligatory “who will pay” thrown in for good measure.

Le.er to the editor—con$nues come across the word “climate” or “climate change”. This was odd, I thought, for a “wideranging” press release, so I checked through the Bushfire Inquiry report and discovered that the word “climate” is in fact menFoned 141 Fmes in the report.

I thought it notable that the Mayor did not pick up on this obviously major element of the Inquiry, so I then Vol 16 back September 15th 2017 went and reread the Mayor’s press release for any hint or acknowledgement of climate change. The 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 only potenFally likely statement I could idenFfy in the Mayor’s press release was “Clr Innes said the inquiry confirmed an increased likelihood for more firestorms of the type experienced last summer”.

Thinking to myself that this is preJy troubling news, I went back to the Inquiry report, and searched for the word “firestorm”, expecFng to find corroboraFon of Mayor Innes’ worrying asserFon. To my surprise, I found that the Inquiry makes no such statement. In fact, the word “firestorm” crops up only once in the enFre report, on page 140 when the report briefly menFons the existence of a NSW Government project enFtled “Project Firestorm”. The Eurobodalla public and the wider community deserve an explanaFon of where and why Mayor Innes conjured her firestorm asserFon, which can only serve to fuel greater public anxiety about looming bushfire hazards. Has this been done to stoke up the hysteria for even more hazard reducFon burns?

The final thing that struck me about the press release was the undue emphasis given to the desirability of a new Eurobodalla Emergency OperaFons Centre (EOC) to the exclusion of virtually anything else in the Shire. There was no consideraFon whatsoever of the suitability of current evacuaFon centres’ infrastructure in the Eurobodalla (which had been sorely tested and found wanFng in last season’s emergencies), or the widespread lack of adequate faciliFes and resourcing for “on the ground” local RFS groups, who directly confront the flames. Council and the Mayor seemed to be focussing on their own internal prioriFes and agendas, rather than arFculaFng and advocaFng for fixes to broader community needs and other obvious gaps in Eurobodalla’s bushfire capabiliFes. I wondered if the Mayor’s press release has just been used to set the stage for an imminent announcement of a new EOC. This could then be used as an unstated ‘silver bullet’ providing irrefutable proof of Council’s impeccable bushfire credenFals, and then opFonally used to decry those who idenFfy and highlight other criFcal Eurobodalla bushfire gaps or key improvements as “just whingers”.

It is sobering to consider that the NSW Bushfire Inquiry unequivocally states that “Climate change fuelled by increased greenhouse emissions clearly played a role in the condi9ons that led up to the fires and in the unrelen9ng condi9ons that caused the fires to spread”, meaning that more extreme weather events, involving both floods and fires, can be readily foreseen in our future. We will clearly need to have improved and more robust evacuaFon centre faciliFes across the whole Eurobodalla to deal with the inevitable consequences of such extreme events.

It is remarkable that Council’s only consideraFon of evacuaFon infrastructure in the Eurobodalla since the fires was when it cynically voted to make unspecified last minute design changes to the Batemans Bay Regional AquaFc, Arts & Leisure Centre (BBRAALC) in order to qualify the project for addiFonal funding as an evacuaFon centre. It didn’t concern Council that the site for the Centre is on a flood-affected parcel of land clearly idenFfied as such in the Eurobodalla Shire Local Flood Plan, and so contravenes the NSW Government Major EvacuaFon Centre Guideline. Does Council really care so liJle about the safety of evacuees and the funcFonality and suitability of exisFng evacuaFon faciliFes in the Eurobodalla? The thought also crossed my mind as to whether Council would actually open up the BBRAALC during an emergency, based on their track record during last season’s fires.

The disjunct between the Mayor’s glib and confected markeFng grabs and realiFes “on the ground” becomes apparent as soon as these statements are given any serious consideraFon. EffecFve flood and bushfire disaster responses require a serious, competent and informed approach from all levels of government. The Mayor’s aJempt to score cheap poliFcal points from such criFcal issues does our whole community a great disservice. The Eurobodalla deserves beJer than this.

My wife fell over in Orient Street near Dan Murphys because there is no foot path.

Council has allowed Dan Murphys to put in a new building and as a result the footpath was dug up last year.

They also own the land next door that they have now leK with derelict buildings and construcFon fence.

Why has this been allowed?

The whole end of the street is a disgrace yet the other end of Orient is paved in marble, abstract art and trees.

I called the council and no one knows anything about it.

Ingredients 250g fillet fish chopped 250 g thin dried vermicelli noodles 2 tablespoons fried onion oil or vegetable oil ½ cup laksa paste 400 ml can of coconut cream 1 ½ cups chicken stock 1 tablespoon fish sauce 200 g snow peas, trimmed 1 cup snow pea shoots

Coriander leaves and fresh lime to serve Fried eschallots * 10 eschallots, peeled and thinly sliced on a mandolin 150 ml vegetable oil

* alternaFvely you can use store bought crispy shallots (saves 45 minutes cooking Fme).

Method Cook rice noodles according to packet instrucFons. Drain and rinse under cold water. Set aside.

Heat a large pot or wok over medium high heat. Add the oil and laksa paste and cook for 3 minutes or unFl fragrant and paste is sFcking slightly to the base of the pot or wok.

Add coconut cream, stock and fish sauce. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes allowing flavours to develop. Add prawns and snow peas, cooking for 3-5 minutes or unFl just cooked through. Divide noodles between bowls. Ladle over laksa. Top with pea shoots, herbs, fried eschallots and fresh lime.

For fried eschallots Place sliced eschallots and oil in a heavy based frypan. Place pan over low heat and cook for 45 mins or unFl crispy. Strain eschallots and spread over a large tray lined with paper towel.

Arts—photography The Narooma Camera Club recently held their monthly mee$ng in which they discussed the Set subject of Australian Flora and Fauna.

There were 12 members who entered this month, with 33 images sent in for judging. The judge for August Vol September 15th 2017 was16 Denis Cale, who has been involved for the past 14 years as a past-president and commiJee member 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 111 July 12th 2018 2019 with the photographic clubs in the Shoalhaven, and an FCC judge for 8 years. Denis shares his passion and knowledge of photography running one-on-one camera courses, online or at his studio, and conducFng field photography workshops. Narooma Camera Club would like to thank him very much for his expert analysis on their images.

Young Photographers In Focus Aspiring young 15th photographers from Bodalla Vol 16 September 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 Primary School will have their photographs displayed at the Narooma Library as part of this month’s River of Art FesFval.

A brand new event for Eurobodalla’s annual art fesFval, the exhibiFon will feature the photographs taken by students in Years 5 and 6 at the school as part of the School Selfie iniFaFve.

“The aim of the iniFaFve is to introduce the children to new ways of viewing their school environment and their place within it via the art of photography,” explained Brian Harris, fesFval commiJee member and workshop mentor.

“The photographs combine to create a unique mosaic of the stunning Bodalla environment,” he added.

Mick Newnham, a member of the Eurobodalla Photographic Club, developed and led workshops at the school on various elements of photography including composiFon, light, angles and colour.

Other schools were invited to parFcipate in the iniFaFve but because of COVID concerns, this year’s exhibiFon will only feature the Bodalla school.

In addiFon to being displayed at the Narooma Library during the fesFval, they will also be featured on a virtual gallery on the River of Art website - hJps://www.riverofart.com.au/custom_events/bodalla-ps-takesa-selfie-exhibiFon/ .

The fesFval runs from 18 to 27 September and despite the COVID challenges, it will sFll feature the River of Art Prize, Open Studios, workshops and exhibiFons. Another new event is the mural iniFaFve – REVIVE – which will see large public murals being painted in Bateman’s Bay, Moruya and Narooma throughout the fesFval.

Female cricket on the radar with growth targeted in Eurobodalla Cricket NSW, in conjuncFon with Eurobodalla Shire Council and

cricket parFcipaFon within the Shire over the next three years and beyond. The strategy process, launched with a community workshop, highlighted key local trends and discussed the current challenges and needs of the Eurobodalla cricket community.

A key outcome from the workshop was the idenFficaFon that each cricket club is the hub of their community and that each club could be aligned to Shire precincts to align with the Eurobodalla Shire Council RecreaFon and Open Space Strategy, released in 2018, serving to develop relaFonships between clubs, their catchment schools and local facility needs.

“Female cricket is also on the radar with growth targeted for the Batemans Bay social compe$$on and establishing extra female par$cipa$on opportuni$es in secondary schools and at Southern Eurobodalla and Tuross Head.”

The Eurobodalla Shire Cricket Strategy 2019-2022 idenFfied that it planned to deliver female only Secondary Schools Cup events for Grades 7 to 10 and focused female only events to align with established female programs at clubs as well as establishing a female social team in Moruya/Tuross Head. It is intended that Clubs will be encouraged to establish links with local girls Secondary School CompeFFons/ Programs to idenFfy parFcipaFon pathways for local girls and women and use the Fes as a feeder program for female team/compeFFon. This would then assist in establishing a Female Social CompeFFon in Southern Eurobodalla to support their Far South Coast team increasing the sustainability of local compeFFon and providing more parFcipaFon opportuniFes for local women. “Access to more training programs and resources for club volunteers will also be offered over the next three years, as well as Council idenFfying key facility upgrades and compleFng master plans at Hanging Rock, Bill Smyth and Mackay Park reserves.”

Cricket NSW Cricket Manager for the South Coast, Greg RichardsRiches, sees a great opportunity for cricket to strengthen through this Strategy. “FiKeen key focus areas across the four key pillars of clubs, schools, off-field and faciliFes make (up the Plan),” Richards-Riches said. “As part of the strategy, we will work with local schools to run all School Cups in the region (during) Term 3 or Term 4 and connect them with the clubs so that they can serve as a recruitment tool as well as a parFcipaFon opportunity in their own right. We welcome a new runner by the name of Tom Hofsteede. Tom is a work colleague of Simon Fearn and upon learning that Simon was 100 plus Broulee runner, he was determined to beJer Simon’s Fme for the 5 kilometres. In Tom’s first aJempt, he managed to equal Simon’s Fme for the 5-kilometres of 22.43. He has now beJered Simon’s Fme. There has been consultaFon with several people on the way back to geGng together. At this stage we are looking at the middle of October and because difficulFes in separaFng people by handling three events at the same Fme, it has been decided to run only the 5-kilometres iniFally. The other two events will be incorporated as condiFons improve. People will sFll be able to run any of the three distances in their own Fme and place and have the results recorded.

Steve Johnston Returns to Form With Fine Win at Tuross Vets Golf Despite light rain overnight and the threat of more during the morning a good field of 67 players registered for this week's Tuross Head Veterans Golf Single Stableford event. Winner on the day was Steve Johnston returning to form with a fine score of 25 points. Steve beat home Herb Muriwai and Rob Nash on 24, with the former winning the count back, and Chris WraJen on 23, aKer another count back was required.

Minor prizes were won by Neil Mather, Frank Pomfret and Barry Hoban on 23, Greg Thornton, Blaise Madden, Ross MacAlpine and David Williams on 22, Peg NeveJ, Don Russell, Kathy Crossling, Greg Bush, Tony Crook, Steve Collins, Derek Hoare and Allen Lee all on 21, with a 10 way count back to determine the last group. Solveig Olsson was the unfortunate winner of the Bradman award this week.

Tuross Head Ladies Golf On Tuesday 8 September 22 ladies presented to play in a stroke event which was the playoff for the 2020 Gold Medal winner.

The 6 Medal Winners compeFng for the Gold Medal were: Wendy Schmid, Marie Muriwai, Leonie Doolan, Dorothy Madden and two Fme winner, Beverley Theobauld. The Gold Medal winner for 2020 is Wendy Schmid with a score of 69.

Other winners on the day were: Division 1: ChrisFne WraJen with 73, on a countback from Gayle MacAlpine with 73.

Division 2: Ann Ware with a score of 71 - the Runner-Up Jennifer Gray on 78.

Division 3: Wendy Schmid on 69. The Runner-Up was Dianne O'Shea with a score of 76.

CATALINA LADIES GOLF – CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS ExciFng golf on the final day of the Ladies Championship with very close finishes between all leading compeFtors in the last round. The overall Catalina Club Ladies Golf Champion was determined when Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Margaret Dickinson, the defending champion, and her nearest challenger Helen Neave approached the 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 eighteenth hole Fed. Helen managed to find the green with her second shot whereas Margaret’s ball found the nearside bunker requiring her to get up and down to force a play-off.

This wasn’t to be. Helen took the two puJs for victory and the Championship. CongratulaFons Helen.

Well done to both ladies in maintaining excellent golf over the three days of compeFFon. The tussle for gross leadership in Division 2 resulted in a two-stroke victory for Marion Edmonds and a welcome back to the winning circle for Margaret BlewiJ who won the Division 3 Championship. Your UP TO DATE Fishing report courtesy of Tackle World Moruya Moruya River. 15th 2017 Vol 16 September 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 2018 SFll onApril the27th quiet side would be the best way to describe 111 July 12th 2019 the fishing in the Moruya system at the moment. There have been a few flathead caught in and around the airport flats this week. With slowly worked hardbody lures being a good opFon. Try the Daiwa Double clutch from 65mm through to 95mm sizes. The smaller lures will be beJer suited to the shallower areas, whilst the bigger lures will suit the deeper water areas. There has been sighFngs of Estuary perch down on the southern side of the river aKer dark. Look for areas that have good weed beds that will hold prawns and other tasty treats that the E.P’s like to feed on, and keep your ears keen for the sound of the “boof” as they suck baits off of the surface.

As the water has cleared now, you could try live nippers on the sand flats under the bridge to try and tempt a whiFng or bream that will start to hang around there.

Live nippers will work anywhere in the system, as they are one of the best fresh baits around. Come in store if you are interested in how or where to catch them, and we will help set you up.

Tuross River.

Flathead have been the major source of info coming through the shop this week,as a few good fish have started to wake from their winter inacFvity. Look towards the lower secFon of the system around the flats that have a few good deeper secFons close by. Samaki Vibelious lures have been accounFng for their fair share of fish this weekend. The Estuary perch have finally turned up in the system, with good numbers being found around the boat shed. It won’t take long for these fish to spread through out the system, so if you want a bit of condensed acFon, get in quick before they move on. Samaki vibes and soK plasFcs have been working well on these fish.

Expect to find the odd bream and whiFng starFng to appear on the flats, although, this early in the season, they will be few and far between. Once we gets temps closer to 20deg, the flats will start to show more acFon. Rock and beach.

Salmon have been the main stay of the surf zones this week. With a few good fish coming from around the wind sock and the beaches south of Congo. A few bream have also been found right in front of the Congo creek mouth this week, with live worms or nippers being the best bait opFons.

Off the rocks, Drummer have sFll been in good numbers and have been readily available. There haven’t been any reports of cuJlefish in close to date, but they can’t be far off, which will bring the snapper in close to the rocks.

Offshore.

Good numbers of flathead and snapper have been reported this week. Most fish have been coming from the magic 30-40m mark. Any shallower than that, and the size of flathead drops quickly. Snapper have also been reported out around 50m as well. So there are plenty of opFons for those boaFes looking for a feed of fresh flathead or snapper.

There hasn’t been much buzz from the game crews this week, although I did get a report of a school of bluefin busFng up only 500m offshore last weekend. Unfortunately, the school sounded and disappeared before any gear could be set.
