editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, Having only been on the South Coast for thirty five years I am a new comer in the eyes of many of the old Bmers. But as new comer I15th have2017 very clear memories of what it is like to arrive on the coast as an outsider for a South Coast Vola16 September 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 holiday.

My entry to the South Coast was via the Kings Highway and I loved the descent off the tableland via the ever winding Clyde Mountain road to eventually arrive at the Clyde River Bridge.

This was the moment you wound down your windows and inhaled the salty air to raFle across the bridge, catching glimpses of yachts, the shops along the foreshore and the wide reach of the Clyde river mouth with the Tollgates in the distance.

In days of old, if you didn’t take the offramp to the foreshore, the gateway to Batemans Bay was a two lane road that took you by low rise old houses and a primary school on your leG with an old Bowling Club and the town’s outdoor pool, a minigolf and footy field. Back then the town of Batemans Bay shared the same characterisBcs as most undeveloped coastal towns. It was casual and even had a sign that genuinely said “Welcome”.

But those days are gone. Now visitors will arrive at a massive roundabout to direct them over a four lane bridge that will offer no glimpses and than deposit, without welcome, visitors to a four lane thunder dome of a bypass with the ugly rear of commercial premises along much of its eastern side. The visitor will recognise KFC and, in the distance, McDonalds as they are swept along at 60 KPH. Instead of the once warm welcoming gateway to a coastal holiday desBnaBon that was marked by bowlers in pressed whites and a smiling Skull of Mini Golf that welcomed young and old alike the new gateway proposed will most likely be a mulB story apartment block with retail and a bus interchange at ground level.

Beyond this building will be the new $70 million pool and hall siKng at the busiest intersecBon in the Shire.

This week sees the final week of trading for the iconic Batemans Bay Mini Golf that has provided generaBons of family holiday fun.

In days of old you knew you were on holiday when you saw the Mini Golf. You knew that you had arrived. For so many it was the Mini Golf that was our cultural gateway that said “Welcome”.

South Batemans Bay Link Road Submissions report Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 now online The Transport for NSW – South Batemans Bay Link Road project team offers its thanks to members of the community who provided their feedback earlier this year on the South Batemans Bay Link Road review of environmental factors (REF) and concept design. The team now advise that they have prepared a submissions report which responds to all feedback received.

The REF and concept design were displayed from 27 April to 24 May 2020 and provided an opportunity to learn more about the project and give feedback. The team advise "A total of 58 submissions were received and each submission has been examined individually to understand the issues being raised. The majority of issues related to traffic and transport consideraBons, including the provision of acBve transport for cyclists and pedestrians, potenBal traffic congesBon and future traffic demands.

"In response to community feedback and following further design development, we have made a few key changes to the proposal. These include providing a designated leG turn lane from Glenella Road to the Princes Highway at the roundabout and a leG in leG out arrangement to access Round Hill to improve safety and access.

"The northbound merge lane along the Princes Highway will also be extended to allow safer merging, while opportuniBes for improved cycling connecBvity will be explored in the next phase of the project's development. We will also conBnue to explore ways to reduce biodiversity impacts across the project. "We will conBnue to keep the community informed as the project progresses.

“Dumped Car Set Alight Just before 8am this morning our brigade was called to reports of smoke coming from bush land in between Glenella Road and Yarabee drive in Catalina.

“Upon arrival, crews located a car alight with the surrounding bush land starBng to burn.

“Our smaller appliance was able to gain access to the car fire and completely exBnguish it and the surrounding bush land.

“We are incredibly disappointed to conBnuously see arson in our local community aGer all we have been through. Had we not had so much rainfall recently, this car fire could’ve easily spread into the nearby bush land puKng properBes and people at risk.”

Eurobodalla Repair Cafe opens on Friday 28 August SHASA, with assistance from local volunteers, is seKng up a Repair Cafe in Moruya. The Eurobodalla Repair Cafe will operate at the Red Door Hall, St Johns Page St, from 10am – 2pm every Friday, starBng on Friday 28 August.

Members of the community are invited to come along and bring household items which need to be repaired such as: · Small electrical goods · Clothing · Furniture Repair Cafe and SHASA volunteer Valerie Faber said “The Repair Cafe assists in seeing our possessions in a new light and appreciaBng their value. By repairing household items we extend their life and can save them from landfill and ulBmately save money. It also shows people how repairing their broken items can be fun, as well as rewarding, because they will gain valuable pracBcal knowledge that they can use to fix other things around the house."

Australian Seed Federa2on warns Vol 16 September 15th 2017 against unsolicited 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 seed packages CEO of the Australian Seed FederaBon (ASF), Mr Osman MeweF urges the public to contact the federal Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment in the event they receive unsolicited seed packages in the mail.

This follows media reports that individuals in different countries, including Australia, have received unsolicited seed packages of unknown origin.

“If you receive seed packages via the mail that you have not ordered, please report these to Australia’s biosecurity officials as soon as possible. You should only plant and use seed from known and trusted sources” said Mr MeweF. Seed imported legally undergoes rigorous tesBng by seed companies to meet Australia’s strict biosecurity requirements before they are distributed through commercial channels to prevent or control plant pests that may affect seed quality, seed movement and result in the introducBon of new pests into Australia.

Seeds of unknown origin pose a major threat to Australia’s biosecurity as they carry no guarantee of having undergone these important tesBng procedures and could lead to the introducBon of different types of plant pests and invasive species to the environment including pests that have not previously been reported in Australia.

“Australian farmers and backyard vegetable growers expect quality seed and ensuring seed health is a very important topic for the Australian seed industry” said Mr MeweF. “To meet these customer expectaBons, seed companies focus on the prevenBon, detecBon and eradicaBon of seed borne pathogens.”

“Healthy seeds, free from known seed borne diseases, are necessary for sustainable food producBon. Keeping seeds, and consequently plants, healthy is crucial to ensure a sustainable food supply, as well as to protect Australia’s environment and agricultural enterprises” concluded Mr MeweF. Eurobodalla Council is calling for expressions of interest from people interested in represenBng the community on its Coast and Environment Management Advisory CommiFee. The commiFee comprises community Eurobodalla Council is calling for expressions of interest from those representaBves and scienBsts who provide interested in represenBng the community on Council’s Coast and feedback and advice to the Council around coastal, flooding and environmental issues, such as planning strategies for climate change adaptaBon, floodplains, biodiversity and natural landscapes.

Its members will include two councillors, representaBves from the areas of business, tourism, recreaBon, natural resource management, primary industries and Aboriginal culture, as well as science professionals.

Council is also seeking EOIs from community members to represent each of the five districts throughout Eurobodalla, being: north of the Clyde River, the Batemans Bay CBD to Malua Bay, Rosedale to the Moruya River, South Head to Potato Point and Dalmeny to Akolele.

Applicants will need to submit a case as to why they would make a suitable representaBve, including reference to interest, experience and/or qualificaBons in coastal, flood and environmental management.

NSW Government releases Bushfire Inquiry Report The NSW Government has released the independent NSW Bushfire Inquiry, which examined the causes, preparaBon and response to the devastaBng 2019-20 bushfires.

All 76 recommendaBons will be accepted in principle, with further work to be done on specific Bmelines to give communiBes assurance that changes will be made to keep them safe. Any issues not covered in the report that are sBll relevant to the protecBon of property and life will also be further examined. Resilience NSW, led by Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons, has been tasked with coordinaBng and overseeing the implementaBon of the Inquiry’s recommendaBons as the government finalises its approach.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian thanked former NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Dave Owens and Professor Mary O’Kane AC for their hard work on this report.

“The NSW Government has worked in lock-step with the RFS and Resilience NSW to ensure the state is as prepared as it can be to face the next fire season, but the learnings from this Inquiry will help us further improve our preparedness and response,” said Ms Berejiklian.

“The NSW Government has already delivered more than $45 million in addiBonal funding, announced in May 2020, to fast-track hazard reducBon and deliver upgrades to our firefighBng capability.

“This was a terrible bushfire season and we will look at all the steps we can take, especially in relaBon to helping people protect their property.”

The findings of the report show that there is an opportunity to strengthen governance and responsibility, which we are in the process of addressing.

The report also acknowledges the significant contribuBon of both climate change and the vast expanse of the state’s bushland towards these devastaBng fires.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro said all 76 recommendaBons in the Inquiry are based on the harsh lessons learnt from the catastrophic bushfires of last summer.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David EllioF said NSW is more prepared than ever before for the 2020-21 fire season.

“We have already begun implemenBng the Inquiry’s recommendaBon to replace and retrofit the fleet, with 120 new trucks and 70 refurbished trucks to be rolled out before the end of the financial year. I would like to thank all our emergency personnel and volunteers who made us all proud over this relentless bushfire season,” Mr EllioF said.

More than $180,000 in grants awarded to Batemans Vol 16 September 15thBay 2017 NFPs Vol 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

The FoundaBon for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), in partnership with The Snow FoundaBon, has awarded more than $183,700 in grants to support six projects led by not-for-profit organisaBons (NFPs) in Batemans Bay, through the InvesBng in Rural Community Futures (IRCF) program.

IRCF is a place-based program that provides local NFPs and community sector organisaBons with pracBcal support and funding to be stronger, more resilient, and fulfill their purpose with greater impact. The program encourages collaboraBon and community-led soluBons that seed long-term self-sufficiency for these organisaBons.

In April 2020, FRRR and The Snow FoundaBon partnered with the commitment to increase their ongoing support of South Coast communiBes and to expand the IRCF program into Bateman’s Bay, Nowra and Ulladulla. As part of the program launch, these communiBes are sharing in nearly $500,000 in Start-Up Grants.

Terry Snow, Founder of The Snow FoundaBon, said partnering with FRRR is the best way to make the biggest posiBve impact for the South Coast as they work closely with communiBes to help them prosper by strengthening chariBes and not-for-profit organisaBons.

“The South Coast is my home and it’s important for me to invest in and support our community. We worked hard to help during and aGer the bushfires and our support is ongoing through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond—we’re here to help, we’re here to stay.”

Natalie Egleton, CEO of FRRR, said FRRR has is helping local groups in each community to idenBfy areas of common need, so together they are beFer able to take control of their collecBve future.

“From speaking with community groups and leaders, we know that the past year has been incredibly tough for the region, and recent flooding hasn’t helped. Many organisaBons are stretched to their limit. There is a high level of volunteer faBgue, which in turn has a direct impact on support not-for-profits are able to provide to the community. So, it's even more important than ever that community groups get the support they need to make themselves stronger and more sustainable,” Ms Egleton explained.

“We are delighted some of the funding will be used to develop and improve organisaBonal planning and processes, such as the Clyde River & Batemans Bay Historical Society’s Governance training, while other funding will help upgrade equipment and faciliBes - like Shoalhaven Neighbourhood Services’ customer management system.

“For others, like Shoalhaven Community Preschool in Nowra, and Ulladulla and Districts Community Resources Centre, the Start-Up Grants will go towards providing training and mentoring for staff and beagle weekly : Vol 170 August 28th 2020

“The Start-up Grants will support largely volunteer-run groups to do what they do best and help to make them stronger in the long-run,” said Ms Egleton.

 The Family Place received $40,785 to develop a 5-year strategic plan that supports the urgent need to adapt to Telehealth to conBnue to provide services during COVID-19.  Community Life Batemans Bay received $5,045 to inspire and develop capacity and organisaBonal sustainability by conducBng a one-day workshop for directors, staff, and volunteers, with a focus on nurturing individual leadership, good governance, responsibility, and accountability.  Eurobodalla Educa2on and Therapy Services received $37,500 to strengthen organisaBonal succession planning for the team at Muddy Puddles and retain local people and skills by establishing a student placement program for Allied Health workers.  SEARMS Aboriginal Corpora2on received $40,000 to develop a community engagement plan and new strategic plan to capitalise the CorporaBon’s partnerships and networks and adjust to changing funding dynamics.  Southcoast Health and Sustainability Alliance received $37,500 to drive widespread and coordinated capacity building across 20+ grassroots NFPs in the Eurobodalla area through the appointment of a project coordinator to support governance, leadership, and communicaBons programs.

Batemans Bay Heritage Museum has hosted a volunteers morning tea to celebrate the Museum’s success in being awarded a substanBal CBA bushfire recovery grant.

A spokesperson for the museum posted to their social media site "This will enable us to build and ouZit a much needed and long overdue maintenance workshop.

community Smooth Sailing: How TAFE NSW Helped Adam Anchor His Career In New Waters Vol 16 September 15th 2017 has anchored his career in new waters, pursuing AVolformer Moruya 28 December 7th,jeweller 2017 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

his passion for mariBme with the help of TAFE NSW.

More than two decades aGer studying to be a jeweller at TAFE NSW Enmore Design Centre, father-of-two Adam Rehardt decided to nail his colours to a new mast, compleBng a CerBficate II in MariBme OperaBons under the guidance of TAFE NSW Moruya teacher and legendary local seaman Captain Col TriFon. Mr Rehardt is volunteering at Marine Rescue NSW to build up his sea hours as he sails towards a full-Bme career in mariBme. The Australian mariBme sector has an esBmated annual revenue of $6.88 billion, according to the Australian Industry and Skills CommiFee, with the industry’s 7700 professionals averaging a gross weekly salary of $2123.

Mr Rehardt worked as a jeweller in his family store, The Moruya Jeweller, before purchasing the business from his father in 2007. The born-and-bred local closed the store in 2019 and completed a CerBficate II in MariBme OperaBons and TAFE NSW Moruya.

“I’ve always been around the ocean and into scuba and free diving, and I’m also very passionate about the environmental side of the ocean,” he said. “I was looking through a TAFE NSW brochure one day and saw the mariBme course and just enrolled on the spot.

“To learn under Captain Col was awesome; the course was so hands-on and has a thirst for passing on as much knowledge as he can so that I can relaunch my career.

“He helped me get a voluntary posiBon at MariBme Rescue which allows me to drive a mulBtude of vessels in different situaBon and to also give back to the community.”

Mr Rehardt hopes to use his training and experience to secure a mariBme posiBon with NSW NaBonal Parks and Wildlife Service.

Captain TriFon, who has almost 50 years’ ocean experience as a Navy diver, Customs official and with the Water Police, said the CerBficate II in MariBme OperaBons allowed graduates to take a commercial vessel up to 15 miles out to sea.

“This is a commercial Bcket which means that graduates can find work in a number of areas, including on charter boats doing fishing trips or whale watching tours,” Captain TriFon said.

“Adam was a fantasBc student and it’s great to see him furthering his experience and contribuBng to the community through Marine Rescue.”

The Mother and Child 2020 Study The summer of 2019/20 saw record breaking bushfires that some have dubbed the “black summer”. More than 10 million Vol 16 September 15th 2017 hectares of the2018 local environment was devastated and around 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2019 3,000 homes were lost. Canberra had the worst air quality in the world this January. Since the bushfires, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live and interact with each other. Amongst all of this, a new generaBon of Australians are being brought into the world. A healthy start to life is important for long term health and wellbeing. How has the health of mothers and babies in the ACT and South-Eastern NSW been impacted by these 2020 events?

The Mother and Child 2020 Study is a collaboraBve project involving mulBple UniversiBes, Local Health Districts and Aboriginal Health Services in the ACT/Southeast NSW region.

This area is covered by the HealthANSWERS Partnership. Many of the study team are healthcare pracBBoners who were concerned that they didn’t have clear evidenced based answers to give paBents, who were pregnant during the bushfires, about the potenBal impact of the smoke on babies.

MC2020 is a longitudinal cohort study, in simple terms this means recruiBng parBcipants with a shared characterisBc and following them over a period of Bme. The study will recruit mother-child pairs in the ACT & SE-NSW who were within 3 months of conceiving, pregnant (all trimesters), or within 3 months of childbirth on 1st February 2020.

The same populaBon will have now been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, so the project has adapted to include these circumstances as well. The effects of the bushfire on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their babies will be given parBcular focus as this group has been severely affected within this region.

It is hoped that beFer understanding of the impact of these two crises on the health of mothers and babies will inform the design of intervenBons to improve the outcomes of those most affected, now and in future years There are 4 quesBonnaires and the opBon to consent to data linkage, which gives the study access to limited medical informaBon about the health of the child up to 5 years of age.

This medical informaBon would be collected as part of normal child health checks and therefore this requires no extra acBon from parBcipants, only consent.

Councillors invited to see Meals on Wheels in mo2on Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Vol 28 December 7th, 2017

Vol 48 2018 111April July 27th 12th 2019 On the 26th of August, NaBonal Meals on Wheels Day will recognise its dedicated volunteer workforce who stepped up to help protect the health and wellbeing of vulnerable Australians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When the first COVID diagnoses came to light, many Meals on Wheels volunteers aged 70 and over were recommended to self-isolate for their own safety, while younger volunteers stood up to support their communiBes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government provided vital addiBonal funding which allowed Meals on Wheels services to conBnue delivering nutriBous meals to an increased number of vulnerable members of the community. “We are so thankful to the Government for supporBng us during this uncertain Bme through the increase in funding,” Eurobodalla Meals on Wheels Manager, Alan Russell said.

“They recognised and reinforced the essenBal role our service plays in ensuring food security for people in our community,” Mr Russell said.

As part of the annual celebraBon, Eurobodalla Meals on Wheels welcomed the Mayor and Councillors for a meal delivery run, to see firsthand, the difference Meals on Wheels makes every day.

The Councillors met the volunteers at the Batemans Bay Community Centre and witnessed firsthand the vital role that the Community Centre's commercial kitchen and cool room play.

While the Eurobodalla Council advise they are not going to sell the Batemans Bay Community Centre to fill the $18 million shorZall in funding for the $70 million Mackay Park pool it is sBll their intenBon to sell the community owned property to fund the running costs of the pool and hall once the new facility is open.

In the meanBme the Council is encouraging Meals on Wheels to look for alternate premises as they do not plan on replicaBng a commercial kitchen in the new Mackay Park complex as part of the tradeoff of selling the community owned Centre and providing instead a meeBng room that the community can hire.

Locals Keeping Our Communi2es Covid-19 Safe Southern NSW Local Health District (SNSWLHD) would like to thank businesses who conBnue to work with the District to help keep local communiBes safe. The District has been on the ground throughout Vol 16 September 15th 2017 southern NSW,2018 talking 28 December 7th, 2017directly with business owners about their COVID-19 Safety Plans.

In June this year, the NSW Government launched an educaBon and compliance program to help businesses and the community develop and implement COVID-19 Safety Plans and the related public health measures.

The COVID-19 Safety Plans assist businesses to protect staff, customer and visitors against transmission of COVID-19 in the community. Officers from NSW Police, Office of Liquor & Gaming, Safe Work NSW and local Councils also assist with the program.

“The District has local Environmental Health Officers walking the streets and visiBng local businesses to ensure they have the right measures in place”, said Tracey Oakman SNSWLHD Director of Public Health.

“We’re very aware of the sBgma and also the reputaBonal damage that can stay with a businesses if they’re associated with a COVID outbreak, which is why we’re working with them throughout the District to ensure they have the right measures in place”.

Since the program started, NSW Health has performed more than 3000 inspecBons across the state, with 226 being carried out throughout southern NSW. Of the visits throughout the local health district, 50% were found to have COVID Safety Plans in place, while 52% recorded to be pracBcing safe physical distancing, wellness of staff, hygiene and record keeping outcomes.

Sense Rugby is specifically designed by occupaBonal therapists to assist children with a developmental delay and those living with a variety of condiBons (e.g. AuBsm Spectrum Disorder).

Sense Rugby uBlizes modified rugby drills to assist children develop skills to process sensory informaBon, focus on an acBvity for 30+ minutes, work on their motor coordinaBon, manage their emoBons, apply social skills techniques and learn to work alongside their peers.

A cancer diagnosis in rural or remote NSW can bring the addiBonal burden of travelling long distances to treatment. Through a partnership with www.greenslips.com.au, Can Assist Eurobodalla has funding to help ease that burden. The comparaBve CTP insurance site knows the cost of CTP car insurance. It recognises the benefits of keeping local cancer paBents’ cars on the road, when they need them most.

“Our local cancer paBents can’t get to treatment if they can’t travel. The main objecBve is geKng people to treatment in Canberra, Nowra or Bega. This injecBon of funding means we can do more. Grants available to help local businesses, communi2es thrive Eurobodalla’s small medium-sized businesses impacted Vol 16 September 15th to 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 by the summer bushfires can now apply for grants of up to $5,000 to help with business development.

Eurobodalla Council’s Business Resilience Grants program uBlises $200,000 of Commonwealth Government disaster recovery funding to help Eurobodalla businesses impacted by the fires.

The grants may be used for things like markeBng support, online and e-commerce development, business expansion, efficiency and growth, business development and business-based events.

Businesses wanBng assistance with the grant applicaBon process can contact the newly-opened Eurobodalla Bushfire Recovery Support Service via 4474 7434, email recovery@esc.nsw.gov.au or visit the shopfront in Vulcan Street, Moruya, next to Moruya Pharmacy.

In addiBon to the Business Resilience Grants, phase two of the Eurobodalla Relief Fund has been extended.

It offers grants of up to $10,000 to community associaBons and business chambers for projects and events that celebrate, re-invigorate and strengthen Eurobodalla’s communiBes. Applicants need to demonstrate how their project or event will focus on bushfire recovery.

A recent recipient of the grants was the River of Art, which collaborated with three local chambers of commerce and the Narooma Oyster FesBval, to provide permanent public art murals in Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma. Each of the murals will reflect this year’s fesBval theme, resilience and renewal.

Gadfly 125 By Robert Macklin The news that one of the towering figures of Australian government in the 20th century is to be honoured with a statue in Canberra’s Parliamentary Triangle triggered a squeak from one of the Vol 16 September 15th 2017 lesser known academic historians of the 21st.

28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 2018 111 July 27th 12th 2019 Dr David Headon who, we are told, ‘worked at the National Capital Authority during the 2000s and assisted in the installation of Reconciliation Place and the Menzies Wall,’ said, ‘Quite simply, it is impossible to make a credible case for McEwen, and for half a million taxpayer dollars to be spent on it is unconscionable.’

As McEwen’s press secretary, for the last four years of his Parliamentary career – 1967-71 – I’m happy to take up the challenge.

I should mention that I was a beardless youth when I joined him as the only other male on the six-person staff. I had met Mr McEwen (as he then was) only once when researching a story on his idea for a Resources Development Bank designed to fund the downstream ‘value added’ potential for our mining and agricultural industries. Billy McMahon and the laissez faire Libs killed that one in Cabinet; and today it remains a great gap in our economic armoury, with Labor still making vague promises of something similar.

At the time McEwen was 67 and had been in the parliament since 1934. A combination of unceasing work and a torturous dermatitis had taken a physical toll and the likelihood was that he’d retire in a year when his successor – either Doug Anthony, Ian Sinclair or Peter Nixon – was ready to take over. I’d return to The Age having had the good fortune of working with one of the few genuine statesmen we’ve produced. So we had a meeting which ended with his firm handshake and, “Welcome to the family.’

By then Dr Headon, this is what he’d already achieved: As Minister for External Affairs and Minister for Air in 1941, he knew that with the Vichy French running New Caledonia, Japan could secure a foothold within bombing distance of our East Coast. He devised a scheme involving Menzies, Churchill and Charles de Gaulle to raid Noumea, extract the Vichy Governor and his staff, load them onto a Norwegian freighter and dump them on an Indo-Chinese beach. The territory then became an important Allied base. He regarded this as his most significant achievement.

After the war, as Minister for Trade and with Britain an economic basket-case, he braved the ire of the returned men in both the Liberal and the Labor Parties and negotiated the Australia-Japan Trade Agreement that transformed our export economy, thus laying the foundation for today’s excellent relations with that country.

In the early 1960s with the UK retreating from its ‘Far East’ in favour of the European Common Market, he not only fought for a special deal on primary products for Australia, he allowed New Zealand to piggyback on it, thus earning that government’s (but not the All Blacks’) everlasting gratitude…for a month or two.

In 1967, when shipping containers were transforming the carriage of Australian trade, he created and forced our own fleet into the British “shipping conference” that monopolised the market, thus saving Australian exporters and importers millions, and earning that Government’s deep and permanent respect…for a week or two.

And throughout it was his policies of industrial protection, via the tariff, that provided the jobs for a massive influx of the migrants that has made our country the thrilling place to be, even with the wretched pandemic that has sundered other countries.

So, Dr Headon is it really “impossible to make a credible case for McEwen’ and is it really “unconscionable for half a million taxpayer dollars to be spent on it?”

Truth is, Dr Headon, it was John McEwen who provided the engine that powered the Menzies government through those days of plenty as our country grew towards adulthood. He was not perfect. Some say he and protection policies stayed too long. But he was old fashioned; he thought real wealth came from making things like cars and widgets, so that in emergencies we’d have the capacity to retool to meet the new demands. The auditorium of the Workers’ Club was packed to the raGers and the anger was palpable. Empty schooner glasses, rimmed15th with2017 stale froth, some containing cigareFe buFs, adorned all spare space, window ledges, Vol 16 September 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol seldom 48 the 111April July 27th 12th used2018 2019 club piano and the odd one lay unconscious on the heavily stained carpeted floor. There was the odd argument about ‘Who shouts?’ but a universal commitment to speed drink whilst the happy hour lasted.

The remnants of the club’s eight dollar ‘all you can eat’ Chinese smorgasbord were scaFered throughout and half eaten plates of special fried rice with sweet and sour pork or lemon chicken vying for space with chomped spring rolls and dim sims oozing oil. It was all now feasted on by flies, chancing survival with the intermiFent air condiBoning baFling the outdoor summer heat, while the Chinese Australian cook, with scotch glass in hand, leaned unsteadily against the kitchen doorway and surveyed the carnage.

Body odour mixed with fumes from both human orifices, the stench of beer and the fog of the omnipresent cigareFe smoke churned the mood of discontent. The walls were adorned with large posters of the local member of parliament suited up and on a background of local surf club colours, above Bny print staBng his party allegiance.

A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II hung crookedly on the wall, half smiling down on her subjects. The noise level went down a notch or two, with the loudspeaker announcing the winner of the meat tray raffle, or the repeat of ‘The driver of the red Torana license plate number FCK M80 you’ve leG your lights on in the car park.’ Dizzy, ludicrous tunes and the very infrequent coin jackpot drops, emanated from the pokie machines in the adjacent room.

A beer-bellied giant of a man, dressed in stubbies, cigareFe burned singlet, splashed with sweet and sour sauce and all of him atop dirty feet, precariously squeezed into overburdened rubber thongs. He held an angled half finished schooner glass of Tooheys New in one hand, and his fist strangled a dim sim in the other. From the middle of the mob he swayed and roared ‘’Bring the prick on! Bring on the prick!,’. The mob repeated the chant. Stage leG and behind the curtain, the local poliBcian was sweaBng profusely. He had door knocked every house in the electorate and was proud of his three percent personal following, against the naBonal trend, at the last elecBon. He had followed up every local concern with representaBons to the relevant minister, had a weekly spot on the local radio, regularly lunched with the editor of the regional newspaper and aFended every significant school assembly over the past twelve months.

Local party supporters solidly supported him, swinging voters begrudgingly approved of him but hated his government and his opponents were respecZul of him but passionate in their contempt for his leader, the Prime Minister. The local member mopped the sweat from his brow and exchanged glances with the Prime Minister.

With the auditorium baying for blood, the Prime Minister stretched his shoulders, rubbed his chin, lowered and fixed his eyes on his shorter colleague and stated, ‘Comrade. I would never have agreed to come to this rabble if I knew you were this unpopular.’ The local beagle weekly : Vol 170 August 28th 2020

2017 With each policy point he completed with the sentence ‘With your support I have 28 December 7th, 2017at a local level.’ With a not too subtle switch from first to third person he would then Vol 48 27th 2018 achieved this outcome 111April July 12th 2019 state ‘The Prime Minister will address the naBonal posiBon.’ The odd but audible ‘hear hear’ from the ardent supporters, was subdued by the repeated roar of ‘Bring the prick on!’ From the beer-bellied giant. ‘I now introduce the Prime Minister of Australia.’ And the local member scurried to the leG of the stage. The roar and the boos were deafening as the Prime Minister strode out, emperor like, and took up posiBon at the lectern. He scanned his notes and waited for the noise to subside. ‘Men and women of.....’ and he paused to brush off a persistent fly.

From deep inside the gut of the beer-bellied giant a roar went up ‘Oi.... leave our bloody flies alone, mate.’

The mob erupted into laughter and the Prime Minister conBnued his pause. No sooner had he restarted and the heckler swayed forward and boomed ‘ Oi....oi..... ‘Ousing. ‘Ousing is a bloody disgrace in this country. Fix up ‘ousing.’

The Prime Minister looked up from his notes and scanned the room. His shiny forehead liGed his eyes above the crowd, scanned passed the crooked portrait of the Queen teetering on the wall and sought some temporary solace in a rising moon in the dirt stained window at the back of the auditorium. He pursed his lips and began to outline a wide ranging social agenda and skilfully arBculated a new independence for the naBon. It would be an awakening of a country long dormant, in the post WWII years; with the aboliBon of university fees, support for equal wages for women, land rights for indigenous Australians, funding for the Arts, promoBon of a mulB cultural Australia and an end to involvement in the Vietnam War as plaZorm iniBaBves. There were nods of approval from the commiFed party supporters and even the odd clap from the back of the auditorium.

But the booming voice again went up ‘Oi....... ‘ousing mate. Bloody ‘ousing! ‘Ousing is crap in this country.

What are you gonna do about ‘ousing?’

The Prime Minister now fixed the beer-bellied giant in his sights. ‘In the very short term we are going to put an aitch in front of it.’ A murmur of laughter driGed amongst the crowd and a couple of the heckler’s mates shiGed slightly away to his side, but the beer-bellied giant bared his gapped teeth and with a noBceable slur, hit back with ‘Yeah...... who’s gonna pay for that eh?’ He wiped his mouth with the back of his stained hand and his blurry eyes measured the room for reacBon. The Prime Minister raised his eyebrows and then moved onto his final, signature policy on health care. He outlined the failings of the current system and detailed and compared the access of health care for the rich sick in the wealthy suburb of Vaucluse against the reality of the poor in Rooty Hill. He then proposed a sweeping reform that would provide universal health care for all Australians, regardless of income, suburb, city or region and all paid for by a modest one percent income tax increase.

There were now audible murmurs of approval from the crowd but the beer-bellied giant twigged at the menBon of health care, swayed markedly, and with his greatest roar of the night, spewed out ‘Oi...... aborBon eh? What are you gonna do about aborBon?’ The Prime Minister put his notes to one side. The mob was silent now, and the Prime minister paused for a very long moment and fixed the beer-bellied giant firmly in his gaze. ‘In your case’ and again he paused, with the crowd now surprised and expectant at such direct engagement with the heckler. ‘In your case.............. I am going to make it retrospecBve.’

Is too li5le thought given to our aging popula2on The Beagle Editor For some Bme now there’s been concern about the economic well being of the Eurobodalla Shire area, future growth and development. PopulaBon growth and development is necessary for the area to remain financially Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 viable. the moment the Eurobodalla Shire is a high unemployment local government area with an Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111At July 12th 2019 increasing ageing populaBon who generally have limited, very regulated household incomes and weekly disposable incomes. The ageing populaBon will require improved infrastructure upgrades for mobility and their general wellbeing. The area has been promoted as a place to reBre to, but requires much improved upgrades to footpaths and even foot bridges in some of the shire areas for safety and access reasons.

Our elected councillors appear not to be concerned that the ageing populaBon being aFracted to the Eurobodalla Shire require decent highway access for all sorts of reasons, including medical, to places like Canberra. It’s clear our elected representaBves need to put more effort into lobbying or advocaBng to fast track upgrades of the two Highways that service the Eurobodalla Shire. But our councillors will also have to eventually recognise a younger age demographic with jobs to suit the younger age is necessary to grow the Shires economy at reasonably sustainable rates for all our benefits. People are required locally to do the physical work needed to sustain a financially sound local economy.

The shire has a large percentage of its populaBon aged, over 65. The aged populaBon of the shire is increasing, people are living longer. The shires aged populaBon needs a separate representaBve commiFee reporBng to council on their needs.

In the coming September, council will be reviewing its commiFee structures, memberships, aims and aspiraBons.

During the CommiFee Review processes Council should or could agree to establish a new commiFee to deal specifically with the shires aging populaBon and what is required by that considerable secBon of the community of the many areas that council is responsible for. Eg. more made footpaths in residenBal areas that don’t have. Such infrastructure is an essenBal for a shire like ours and should be viewed with a higher priority. Council has a Youth CommiFee, a Disability CommiFee yet it does not have a commiFee able to represent the 30% of its populaBon over 65 years of age. If they did they would likely to aFract funding or subsidised funding.

100 Years Ago -August 28 1920 DEBATE.-What proved to be a successful debate took place in the Shire Hall on Tuesday night, the subject being the taxation of bachelors. Mr. Dawson occupied the Speaker’s chair and the Rev. J. B. Fulton led for the affirmative and the Rev. G. A. Sanders for the Mr. Fulton, supported by Mr. Carter, made a strong case for the bill; Mr. Sanders with the support of Messrs. Egan, Volnegative.

On being put to the vote four were in favour of taxing bachelors and 16 were against. The bill was therefore lost by an overwhelming majority. All the speeches were good, the nineteen gentlemen and one lady who were present, followed each with keen interest. The next debate will be held in the Shire Hall, on Tuesday the 31st at 8 p.m. sharp, when the leader for the Government will affirm “That the mental capacities of women are equal to those of men.” Such a subject should attract a good number of both sexes. We understand the debates are open to all, whether members of the Society or not, and to adult school children.

HOSPITAL BALL OF 1920 A RECORD Perhaps never before has such a throng of people been seen in the Moruya Centennial Hall as on the occasion of the Hospital Ball on Wednesday night, when over three hundred people filled the entire seating and even standing accommodation. The promise of seeing numbers of dancers masked and in character had doubtless attracted the vast crowd of onlookers, who feasted on a riot of color and movement throughout the evening. Before dancing commenced the stage was taxed to the last inch of space, and this fact proves beyond doubt that a larger hall and gallery is a pressing need for Moruya— at least on the occasion of annual balls. ...On the day previous to the ball Mr. J. Hansen kindly lent his van, and assisted by Messrs. Jermyn, A. Wilson and A.W. Constable brought a large quantity of lillipilli boughs and masses of mountain ferns. The decoration committee… soon had the hall lined with effective sprays of greenery brightened by posies of camellias, stocks and jonquils, thereby imparting to the scene a delightful air of freshness. The same Committee were also responsible for the charming arrangement of yellow and white bulbs on the supper tables.

Before supper the wearers of fancy costumes were asked to take the floor for judging. Ex-Sergeant-Major Melville, organiser of the 2nd Peace Loan, kindly officiated as judge of the best original costume, and gave general satisfaction by awarding “The High Cost of Living” (Mrs. J. Strahan) and “Skinner’s Calf Meal “(Mr. W. Thomson) the respective prizes. Mrs Strahan’s costume was of black liberally bestrewn with small white bags representing various articles of daily food. A high white head-dress completed a very effective ensemble. Mr. Thomson’s representation was a female garb of print skirt and modish blouse comprised of calf meal bags. A print bonnet added to the quaintness of this costume. The remaining fancy costumes were one and all admired, that of Mrs. Fox as Madame La Pompadour being a distinct triumph.

We regret that owing to the dense crush and being so dazed by the glittering fancy costumes, we were unable to take a list of the evening dresses. Suffice it to say the fair sex all looked their best and some especially pretty costumes were noted. The music or our far-famed artists, Miss Kurz and Mr. J. My pal Macman, who I know you listen to on 2EARFM every Wednesday at 1600, called me excitedly the other day as he was walking out of Moruya Books. He had bought, as he knew I would be pleased to note, two books. One was a slim volume called Cult Musicians and the other was the subject of this review, The Dic(onary of Lost Words. Now, you may think that I borrowed Macman’s copy of this book and used his copy for my review. But my Mother insBlled in me that old aphorism that you should “neither a lender nor a borrower be”, an aphorism, I may say, to which I regularly fail to adhere. I decided to look in on Janice, the esteemed proprietor of Moruya Books, where I followed Macman’s example and acquired my own copy of The Dic(onary of Lost Words. And I am glad I did.

Some years ago, I had read, and thoroughly enjoyed, Simon Winchester’s The Surgeon of Crowthorne which tells the story of the creaBon of the Oxford English DicBonary (OED). Pip Williams’ story is based on the story of the OED, a story that started in 1857 when the Unregistered Words CommiFee of the Philological Society of London called for a new English dicBonary. At the Bme the dicBonary most used was Samuel Johnson's then one-hundred-year-old Dic(onary of the English Language. It was in that 1755 dicBonary that Johnson famously defined a lexicographer as “a harmless drudge”. Pip Williams’ The Dic(onary of Lost Words is the story of one such, though ficBonal, drudge. Her name is Esme and we follow her life from 1886 to 1915 and then we have a brief glimpse of her in 1928 as the story moves, albeit briefly but saBsfyingly, to South Australia.

There are many books about the English Language and many of them grace my bookshelves. I can see, as I write, Fowler’s A Dic(onary of Modern English Usage (1926), Gower’s Plain Words (1948), Melvyn Bragg’s The Adventure of English (2003) and David Crystal’s The English Language : A Guided Tour of the Language. You will noBce immediately that these are all by men. While Lynne Truss’ 2003 book Eats, Shoots & Leaves redresses the balance somewhat, philology and lexicography, like so many human endeavours, have been the province of men. At least, that is what history used to tell us. Pip Williams, I suspect, would have none of it.

The central premise of the book is the Orwellian observaBon that not all words are created equal. And some words are “women’s words” and it is those, and other vulgar (to use the then contemporary word) words that do not make it into the dicBonary at all. At the end of the

Reading book our heroine tells a fusty old funcBonary at the Bodleian Library: “You are not the arbiter of knowledge, sir. You are its librarian. It is not for you to judge the importance of these words, simply to allow others to do so.”

Many of the characters Vol 16 September 15th 2017in her novel are based on real people and Williams reproduces a picture of the key 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 people on the propenulBmate (sic see note at end) and it is interesBng to note that of the 6 people pictured, 2 are women. Esme, our heroine, is the motherless daughter of a man working with the OED team and she spends much of her early years in the Scriptorium, where the OED is developed. As Bme goes on her capabiliBes are recognised and she becomes an assistant on the team, researching words and quotaBons and undertaking other work. Pip Williams has woven a ficBonal narraBve around the events that led to the dicBonary and the result is an interesBng and moving story that romps along and keeps you engaged. The novel is well-researched; I tried to catch its author out. On page 341, in a chapter headed “May 1915” she refers to the song By The Light Of The Silvery Moon which I was convinced was a 1920s song. I have the sheet music; it was published in 1909. On the other hand, and I cannot say if this is simply a proofing error, she twice uses the verb “to peddle” (on pages 202 and 262) incorrectly when she means “to pedal”. For an author posing as a lexicographer, I cannot let that pass.

But for that minor transgression the author is to be forgiven because I loved this book. The characters are well drawn, and the historical contexts of the suffrageFe movement and the Great War are woven into the narraBve. The heroine is likeable and realisBc. In one way it all turns out alright but in another way it doesn’t. But as I finished the book, I found myself thinking about the legacy that we all leave when we finally shuffle of this mortal coil. Whether large or small, we all leave a legacy and we would do well to think about that.

There are the usual enthusiasBc quotes at the start of this book and on looking back at them, I have to say that I agree with them all. And I cannot oGen say that. This is Pip Williams’ first book and I shall be looking forward to her second. I cannot recommend it highly enough and if Janice at Moruya Books has no more copies then I am sure that she can order them in a trice.

Buy it. Read it.

Post-script: When I was 12 or 13, I had an English master called Hugh Dent. We called him, with all the imaginaBon that small boys can muster, Screwy Dent. I suppose he is now long dead. He taught LaBn and well as English and he introduced us to the word “prepropenulBmate” which is a reference to the fourth to last in a list. Hence the word “pro penulBmate” that I have used above is a reference to the third from last.

food Ingredients 2 cups frozen peas 400g can no-added-salt Vol 16 September 15th 2017 chickpeas, rinsed, 28 December 7th,drained 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 3 cups baby spinach 1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped 100g reduced-fat feta, crumbled 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 x 150g firm white fish fillets: sustainable species include Barramundi, Blue-eye Trevalla, Yellowtail Kingfish, Pink Ling, WhiBng, Snappers, Spanish Mackerel or Gould Squid or Southern Calamari.

Lemon wedges, to serve Dressing 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Juice of 1 lemon Method Place peas in a bowl and cover with boiling water; stand for 1–2 minutes, or unBl peas are tender Drain well and leave to cool.

Combine peas, chickpeas, baby spinach, parsley and feta in a large salad bowl; toss well.

Make dressing: Whisk all ingredients together in a jug; pour over salad and set aside.

Heat oil in a large non-sBck frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Cook fish for 2–3 minutes each side, or unBl cooked through.

food After writing recently about a new gut health formula containing glutamine and herbs for healing the gut, several customers came into store with symptoms suggesting they may be suffering from a candida overgrowth. When we’re suffering from candida overgrowth there are the obvious digestive symptoms such as Vol 16 September 15thor2017 diarrhoea, constipation bloating however there are often other 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 symptoms. These can include

feeling sluggish, tired and maybe suffering extreme fatigue feeling a little foggy in the head, poor memory and concentration with lack of focus skin rashes, hives and fungal infections such as athletes foot and toenail fungus vaginal thrush, urinary tract infections or rectal itching sugar and refined carbohydrate cravings irritability, anxiety, depression and mood swings

Now it’s no coincidence this may be happening at this time. A candida overgrowth will come about often when we overindulge in sugar and yeast amongst other things. There is no doubt over the past few months many of us have been increasing our consumption of comfort food – yes, more baking has been happening, plus I’m sure many have been eating more high carbohydrate, high sugar foods. Combine these overindulgences with, for many an increase in alcohol consumption and we have the perfect conditions for an overgrowth of candida.

Stress can be another factor which may be conducive to candida overgrowth and of course we haven’t had much of that in the past year. Candida is always present in our bodies, with a small amount of it residing in our mouth and intestines assisting with our digestion. However when we suffer from an overgrowth of candida, leaky gut syndrome will occur where the candida will penetrate the wall of the intestines and be absorbed into the blood stream leading to many health problems.

Generally, the healthy bacteria in our gut will keep this candida under control however these overindulgences I’ve mentioned can sometimes be just a little too much to ask of our healthy gut bacteria.

An overgrowth can also come about when we are living a stressful lifestyle, taking oral contraceptives, eating lots of refined carbohydrates and taking antibiotics which have killed not only the bad but also the good bacteria in our gut.

So how do you overcome this? Firstly, we need to kill off this overgrowth of candida which we can do with certain herbs such as Pau D’Arco which is a South American herb used to combat excessive intestinal yeast. If we are suffering from a severe case of candida overgrowth, we would suggest bringing in the ‘big guns’ and using a combination of Pau D’Arco, Cats Claw, Golden Seal, Echinacea and St Mary's Thistle. Cats Claw and Echinacea are a great addition to this formula as they both believed to be helpful in boosting the immune system and a good immune system is a great defence against Candida. Cats Claw also contains anti-inflammatory properties which may help with gastrointestinal disorders. Like Pau D’Arco, Golden Seal also contains excellent anti-fungal properties to help inhibit the growth of candida. It is also believed to contain antibacterial properties and enhances our immune system. St Mary's Thistle is well known as a liver herb.

At the same time as we are killing off the candida, we also need to be mindful of not feeding the candida. By eliminating certain foods from our diet such as sugar, yeast, fermented foods and fungi we will help our body recover from this overgrowth. Be mindful, as this candida dies off, we may feel flu like symptoms as the yeast is flushed from our body. Sometimes taking a liver formula may help process this yeast ‘die off’. This is why St Mary's Thistle has been included in the above candida formula. Drinking lots of water may also be very helpful.

Finally, it is extremely important to take probiotics because no doubt when suffering from a candida overgrowth we have an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut and bowel. It is extremely important to build up the level of good bacteria.

To assist our customers in treating this problem we have created a booklet with suggested foods to eliminate, foods to replace those eliminated foods plus recipes. Most find this booklet very helpful, as it is important to have the right food in our pantry and of course having some recipes on hand is very handy.

Stephanie’s pracBce uses hyper-realism and elements of chiaroscuro techniques to explore vulnerability and thoughZul moments of contemplaBon in her subjects. The exhibiBon will be held at The Basil Sellers ExhibiBons Centre (The Bas) which adjoins the Moruya library on the corner of Campbell and Vulcan Street.

On her game and conBnuing her winning streak, Division 2 winner Pauline Nash played magnificently scoring an enviable 70 neF. R/U Jan LouKt also played consistently well resulBng in an impressive score of 73 neF. Tuross Bowls news Aug 23rd 2020 Peter Davies and Joel Hilliard (right) have won their second consecuBve Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Major Pairs 28 December 7th, Vol 48 Championship in a 2017 final that was surrounded 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 with drama. The recent wet weather has played havoc with the bowling program and the Final of the Major Pairs had to be suspended twice. Then when it was fine enough to play the weather was cold and very blustery! Added to this the skip of one of the sides, John Monks, was forced to withdraw due to ill health! This meant that Noel Downie was forced to play skip and Des Jackson came in as a subsBtute.

The game itself had its own drama! Davies and Hilliard held the upper hand for most of the game but were forced to withstand ‘one hell of’ a fightback to claim the Btle! On the back of a master class in lead bowling from Davies, the defending champions were able to gradually build a lead in a very Bghtly contested match.

The first 12 ends were decided by either 1 or 2 shots but Hilliard and Davies won 10 of the ends to set up a 15 – 3 advantage. When they moved to a 22 – 6 lead aGer 16 ends the game looked all but over.

Then the drama started! Jackson and Downie picked up 13 shots, including two scores of 5, to move to within 3 shots of the leaders at 19 -22 with just one end to play. Could it happen!! As the last end unfolded, Jackson and Downie held the advantage. As he prepared to bowl his last bowl, Downie was holding two shots needing one more to force another end or two to win. He took a calculated gamble to go for the win.

Unfortunately for him he disturbed the head with the jack moving to give Davies and Hilliard 3 shots and a 25 – 19 victory!

The brave souls who stayed for the finish were treated to some great suspense. On balance Davies and Hilliard had the beFer of the match but Jackson and Downie really showed their fighBng spirit to almost snatch the most unlikely of victories! Called in at the last minute, Jackson played very well. CongratulaBons to the Champions!

Two matches have also been decided in the Triples. In another incredible finish Des Jackson, Col Fletcher and Lawrie Riley won the last three ends to grab a 21 – 20 win over Len Downie, Noel Downie and Marcel Kors.

Kors’ side lead the whole game but every Bme they looked like moving to an unbeatable posiBon, Riley was able to narrow the gap. AGer 19 of 25 ends, Kors was in front 19 -12. By the 22nd end the lead was cut to 20 – 15. Riley scored 2 shots on each of the last three ends to snatch victory – the first Bme in the whole game that his team was in front!!

The other game was not as close. Doug Williams, Alan McLeod and John Monks dominated the first half of their match with Brian Currie, Alan Skelton and Allan Etheredge. By the 11th end they lead 26 – 1.

Etheredge’s side fought back but could not bridge the gap. The final score was 33 – 10.

However golf carts were able to be used on the course with request from Vol 16a September 15th the 2017ground management supervisor Tim Watson that players 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 exercise due care in negoBaBng the fairways.

Ray Bollard was able to master the heavy condiBons and emerged the winner of the stableford event with 36 points. Michael Allen filled second placing with a close 35 points. Kevin Dukes, who also scored 35 points was third on a countback.

Graeme Sindel and Robert McDonell were the remaining award winners both handing in cards of 34 points.

Thursday’s medley stableford compeBBon was won by Colin Houghton with 37 points ahead of Allan Langford 35, Ian Manton and Leonie Doolan both on 34 and Chris Cox who finished with 33 points.

Margaret Downey Beats Home the Field At Tuross Vets Despite a few late cancellaBons yet another strong field of 64 players registered for the Tuross Head Veterans Golf Single Stableford event today.

Based on the scores returned the course is either playing easier than in past weeks or the handicapper needs to be tougher!

Winner on the day was Margaret Downey with a fine score of 26 points for the 9 holes played. The next 3 placings all required count backs with Ann Ware edging out Paul Coffey and Richard Kelly, all players having scored 24 points. Minor prizes were awarded to Rick Brake on 23, Noel Downie and Enid Besant-Ryan on 22, Robert McKirdy, Ray Downey, Derek Hoare, Tony Crook, Peter McRae, Len Rogers, Ross Macalpine, Henry Anderson, Ian Manton and Warren Hodder all on 21, and finally John Cox on 20 points aGer a mulBple way count back. Don Russell was the unfortunate winner of this week's Bradman Award.

With the influx of fresher, cleaner salt water the fish acBvity is starBng to increase. Look towards the boFom half of the system around areas like Preddy’s wharf on the south side and the airport flats and river walls around garland town for best chances. Live nippers pumped from the Garlandtown flats will make awesome live baits.

Further up the river, try and Bme your fishing acBvity with the top of the Bde to avoid the dirBer water that is sBll in the system. Bream and trevally are opBons at the moment, try looking in the deeper holes, where the salt water influence is higher.

Tuross River.

Signs of life conBnue to return to this system also as things start to seFle down. The have been murmurs of the mulloway starBng to show up in a few of the holes in the lower half of the system. As with Moruya, the high Bde will be the beFer Bme to look for these silver ghosts. Around the lower parts of the system, bream, trevally and flathead can all be expected to be encountered. Live nippers, as well as well presented prawns, or white bait will all be good opBons as far as baits go.

Hopefully, aGer the recent flush, the estuary perch may decide to show up. Try around four ways and the snags that are prevalent in this area for a chance at finding these fish.

Rock and beach.

There have been good salmon around the south Congo area this week. Any beach with a good guFer, and no weed, will be a good opBon for those wanBng to chase a few salmon.

The Moruya break wall has seen consistently good catches of Trevally this week, with fish to 50cm reported. These fish fight hard, and are great on the table to boot. Baits of whole pilchard on gangs will get both the salmon and the Trevally, as will metals cast for the salmon. SoG plasBcs or medium sized hard bodies have been tempBng the trevally also.

Water clarity has been a bit of an issue for those divers wanBng to chase a feed off the rocks at the moment. With vis of about 1-2m, finding a cray or two has been a maFer of diving by feel.

Offshore.

Those that have managed to get out, have found the waters on the inshore reefs sBll a bit dirty, but have managed to bring in some good snapper, mowies, and flathead. Start looking in the 30-40m mark.

There are sBll reports, that the longliners are sBll catching tuna off the bay and towards Ulladulla. So for those keen for a tuna or two, fuel up and head out.
