editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, What a week !!! And what a roller coaster of a life we are having. August already; however to many of us it Vol 16 September 15th 2017 seems like 27th an eternity 28 April December 7th, 2017since last Christmas.

The bushfires took an enormous toll on our spirits. First came the elaCon of summer and the expectaCon (and hope) that visitors would come and save us from our local recession. AFer two quarters of recession in the lead up to last summer the region was desperate for full beds, bums on café seats and solid employment for our normally under-employed.

But the fires came, the smoke came, and the visitors that did come were sent home. A few weeks passed and we tried the reset buIon. “Bring Your Eskies”, “Love the Bay” - the Mayor even made an appearance, voice synching and dancing to a tune to tell Canberra how much we love them and asking them to come back.

But that was so long ago and the summer we had was a financial fizzer.

To add another layer to an already complex situaCon along came some local flooding that at least brought much needed rain to break the drought and to deliver moisture to bone dry forest. As a result the trees responded with new shoots that provided an element at least of hope to communicate that while they were horribly burnt they sCll had a pulse.

Next came Covid-19. This nasty bug sent our lives in a total spin.

Financially it heralded the demise of so many of our local businesses who did not have the luxury of a savings buffer to survive. Fortunately we are presently in a protecCve bubble that keeps us safe from the inevitable day where the supports that are in place, the legislaCons around mortgages, rents and employment all end and the Goldilocks period returns to ‘normal’.

When that day comes we had best be prepared. Prepared with food for the poor, housing for the poor, medical support for the poor and jobs for the poor.

When that day comes, locally, one in five of our working community will be unemployed with many more on social security. We will be the poor.

Much like during the bushfires we will be underprepared and much like Covid we will be caught off guard. Maybe it is due Cme that we became proacCve and prepare for what will be inevitable.

Local Facebook groups receive Impact Funding Following on from the Facebook Bushfire Assistance training Vol September 15th 2017markeCng packages earlier this year the and16donated business 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Facebook Australia Groups Impact Fund announced in early July their $500,000 funding for the program.

The grant was originally designated for bushfire recovery groups, however, was extended to local communiCes across the country who might be facing hardship.

Facebook said it was on the lookout for groups that have a posiCve impact and provide valuable opportuniCes for communiCes to come together to provide aid in respect of a crisis. Eligible Facebook Groups were able to apply for grants between $1,000 to $10,000 to conCnue supporCng their communiCes in an economic, caring or fun way.

“In the face of adversity, Australians have shown phenomenal resiliency and generosity to help those in their local community,” said Facebook policy programs manager Alisha EllioI. “From bushfires to pandemics, we have seen people using Facebook Groups creaCvely, connecCng people who are leading grassroots community recovery efforts in a range of areas, from wellbeing to supporCng small businesses.

“We are supporCng the community leaders using Facebook Groups to conCnue the impacTul work to bring joy, kindness and care to communiCes across Australia.”

Love The Bay BB and Let’s Talk Mental Health are recipients of the fund and have been awarded $10,000 each. Love the Bay is a local pride campaign aimed at generaCng posiCve community pride amongst the wider Batemans Bay area residents, businesses and visitors.

Let’s Talk Mental Health has been created to help individuals everywhere who have an interest in improving their mental health or for those who have experienced or are currently experiencing mental health issues.

This group exists to help people feel less isolated and reduce the undue sCgma that sCll surrounds mental health. This is a safe place to express without judgement, with input provided from by Stacy Shepherd, director and clinical psychologist at Broulee Psychology (located on the far south coast of NSW in Australia).

NSW SES prepares for another weekend of rain along the South Coast The NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) has issued a warning for residents on the state’s South Coast to prepare for possible heavy rain, strong winds and heavy seas over the weekend.

Zone Commander for the NSW SES, Colin Malone, said the low- pressure system that is expected to affect the South Coast over the weekend may impact the already weIer than average catchments bringing the potenCal to cause flash flooding, local and minor

Bridge components on the move: Police urge pa)ence Motorists are advised changed traffic condiCons to accommodate the delivery of bridge segments along the Princes Highway between Jeremadra and Batemans Bay are set to be in place from next week.

The ongoing changes will allow for the safe delivery of concrete bridge segments from the pre-cast facility at Jeremadra, south of Mogo, to the Batemans Bay Bridge replacement construcCon site.

A total of 166 segments will be delivered under NSW Police escort between 6am and 7am, 9.30am and 2.30pm and 4.30pm and sunset during weekdays and between 6am and 8am on Saturdays, weather permiVng. To minimise impacts to motorists and the community, the deliveries will not occur during peak holiday periods, at night or on Sundays and public holidays. The deliveries will also avoid bridge opening Cmes of 11.45am and 2.20pm. Delivery is expected to conCnue unCl late 2020 and motorists can check Live Traffic NSW for updates.

All road users should follow the direcCon of the NSW Police escort if they are travelling during segment delivery Cmes.

Motorists may experience delays of up to 10 minutes due to slower truck speeds and reduced speed limits of between 60 km/h and 80 km/h on secCons of the Princes Highway, and may also experience intermiIent delays due to trucks crossing bridges at reduced speeds of 10 km/h along the delivery route. Motorists are advised to drive to the condiCons, safely use designated overtaking lanes and follow the direcCons of signs and traffic control.

Support has been extended for bushfire-impacted small businesses across NSW with grant applica)ons now remaining open un)l 15 December through the Small Business Assistance Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Program.

Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for Disaster Recovery John Barilaro said communiCes recovering from the recent bushfires will have more Cme to apply for the hugely successful small business grants without the stress of missing out.

“Last season’s bushfires were unprecedented and the support offered by the NSW Government needed to match,” Mr Barilaro said.

“The $10,000 and $50,000 small business grants have resulted in around $240 million being paid out to small businesses, puVng money directly into the pockets of those enterprises most in need across the state.

“IniCally the grants program was expected to close mid-year, however the assistance will remain open unCl the end of the year and can be accessed via Service NSW.” Minister for Finance and Small Business Damien Tudehope said it was important that small businesses were supported, parCcularly given the compounded effects of bushfires and now COVID. “In addiCon to the small business grants, the concessional loans program for small businesses will also be extended,” Mr Tudehope said.

“The NSW Government is here to support regional NSW on the long-term recovery journey and we encourage bushfire impacted small businesses who have not yet accessed this support to please call Service NSW on 13 77 88.”

Council to sell Batemans Bay Informa)on Centre to help fund Mackay Park project Eurobodalla Council's General Manager, Catherine Dale revealed last week that Council intended to raise the extra (generally Vol 16money September 15th 2017esCmated at $15 million) need to fill THE GAP it has between the grant money 28 December 7th, 2017 and the expected $70 million required to build the new Mackay Park Centre.

Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 Council has ($51 million) In the mix of moving internal funds around, digging into infrastructure money idenCfied for shire wide projects such as roads and bridges, parks and reserves and using the sale money from the Southern Phone shares and Moruya Racecourse the General Manager made reference to selling assets and real estate.

Council has made it known from the outset that one of the real estate sales it intends to make is the sale of the Batemans Bay InformaCon Centre.

The building, located on one of the busiest intersecCons in the shire a Beach Road and Vesper Street has had its day according to the many tourism consultants who have looked at Council's tourism model and found that it was in need of an update.

As far back as 2015 the Council has considered the financial burden of the building and sought to seek expressions of interest to manage the visitor informaCon centres in Narooma and Batemans Bay. In Narooma the Montague Arts and CraFs grouped stepped in and said they would run the centre however in Batemans Bay there were no takers.

In 2015 the proposal to outsource was presented as a way that council could respond to independent advice that recommended allocaCng a greater proporCon of the exisCng tourism budget to the web and digital environment, and to fund prioriCes in its Tourism DesCnaCon Management Plan.

Since then tourism markeCng has embraced social media and the internet that leaves very liIle demand for InformaCon centres as the majority of visitors now arrive with accommodaCon already booked. Gone are the days when the Batemans Bay Visitor Centre was the stopping point to arrange accommodaCon, tours and excursions. In the age of Google everything is at hand.

The industry as a whole has also changed where accommodaCon providers and tourism operators are encouraged to log their details with the Australian Tourism Data Base to be automaCcally listed on sites such as Visit NSW and even the Eurobodalla Tourism website.

The days of calling in to pick up a local map, some flyers, to buy a bus Ccket or a Ccket for a tour are now a thing of the past. In recognising this Council have now agreed that they will be selling the InformaCon centre.

It is understood that the figure of $1 million has been menConed in back room discussions as Council moves to finding funds to fill the $15 million shorTall to build the Mackay Park Centre across the road. IniCally the idea was to move the tourism staff across the road and provide a Tourism outlet within the centre (see below).

The Regional AquaCc, Arts and Leisure Centre Design Principles described "The foyer areas, including the gateway visitor centre, should reflect a sense of welcome and discovery in relaCon to Eurobodalla, Batemans Bay, and the faciliCes in the Mackay Park precinct." The iniCal design also included bus bays for interstate buses.

Council has moved on from inclusion of Visitor InformaCon in their latest plans and instead have looked to prepare a "Pedestrian Wayfinding Plan to beIer match the16informaCon needs Vol September 15th 2017and expectaCons of pedestrians in accordance with 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 Council’s Tourism Wayfinding and Signage Strategy and Signage Design and Style Guide." To help them achieve this there is consideraCon of replacing the old InformaCon Centre with several Tourism InformaCon staCons around the township.

Of concern regarding the proposed sale of the old InformaCon Centre is the fact that it is also a gallery that features some of our local arCsts. This too will go however Council have said they will be providing display space on the walls of the new centre providing 21 metres of "Hanging Space" in the new foyer (below) located at the entrance to the toilets.

The Batemans Bay Visitor Centre has long been a toilet stop for visitors and with the sale of the building this facility will also go leaving those who find themselves in this area of the town caught out with no opCon but to aIend the nearby McDonalds.

While to intended sale is expected to be in February 2021 Council have already begun preparaCons by suggesCng redundancies to InformaCon Centre staff.

With the on-again, off-again Covid restricCons it is not known if the Centre will remain open for much longer and with the tenders now processed to start the new centre it now appears that this will be last season the InformaCon Centre will see.

Next to come will be Council's conCnued intent to sell the Batemans Bay Community Centre that will be replaced by a meeCng room (hopefully with urn) in the new Centre.

While the video presented the issue with a grand degree of humour it also raised awareness of the more important issue of sleep apnoea The idea of the video featuring Tuross Head came from ResApp Health Limited (ASX: RAP), a leading digital health company View Video HERE: h7ps://vimeo.com/444725654 developing smartphone applicaCons for the diagnosis and management of respiratory disease They launched their new naConal markeCng campaign, ‘The Sleepy Town With a Snoring Problem’, to raise awareness for the importance of early screening for sleep apnoea and to launch of their new app 'SleepCheck’, which helps users assess their risk of sleep apnoea.

The new campaign, created by Isobar, comprises a short film Ctled ‘The Sleepy Town With a Snoring Problem’, featuring residents from small New South Wales coastal town, Tuross Head, who are struggling to get a decent night’s sleep thanks to their snoring partners. The town symbolises a microcosm of Australia’s sleep apnoea problem.

The film tells the story of the sleepless residents of Tuross Head, creaCng bespoke ads around the town - including ads on local community radio staCon, 2EAR FM, full-page ads in the local weekly newspaper, Narooma News, banners throughout the town, personalised coasters at The Tuross Head Country Club and mobile billboard trucks - to persuade their partners to download SleepCheck and find out whether their snoring could be a sign of sleep apnoea.

As part of the campaign, Isobar made donaCons to Tuross Head’s Men’s Shed and the Tuross Head Bushfire Brigade to help build new changing faciliCes, and to thank the people of the town for their hospitality and involvement in the project.

Community NSW Police are reminding the community to stay snow safe, as a low-pressure system brings cold, wet and windy conditions to the Snowy Mountains region.

With snow falls expected to reach towns throughout the region from tomorrow (Friday 7 August Vol 16 September 15thagain 2017 reminding the community to drive to the conditions and prioritise safety on 2020), police are 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 111 July 27th 12th 2018 2019 the roads.

Monaro Police District Commander, Superintendent Paul Condon, said police will continue to be out in force ensuring the safety of the community.

“Our priority is to keep people safe – on the slopes, roads, licensed venues and out and about in the alpine region,” Supt Condon said.

“Snowfield conditions can be difficult to navigate so we’d like to remind everyone to prioritise safety on your journey – pay close attention to the roads, don’t get distracted and slow down.”

Superintendent Condon is also reminding the community that ‘snow play’ is not permitted during the 2020 snow season.

“This year we have had the added complexities of COVID-19, and we are continuing to work closely with health and resort operators to ensure the safety of the community,” Supt Condon said.

“Any visitors to the National Park will need to either have a valid lift pass from a ski resort or have a trip intention form lodged with the National Parks and Wildlife Service for the purpose of back country hiking, skiing or snow shoeing.

“Police are reminding the public to continue to adhere to restrictions and ensure they observe physical distancing guidelines.”

Anna Andrews, Director Operations, Regional and Outer Metropolitan said Transport for NSW is working closely with NSW Police and will have additional portable road safety signage and road crews in the area.

“Road crews will be monitoring the road conditions closely and also checking tickets at the entrance to the Kosciuszko National Park to ensure all vehicles hold a valid pass,” Ms Andrews said.

Mogo Wildlife Park welcomes a new ‘li7le’ arrival – close to Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 6Volfoot tall!

48 2018 111April July 27th 12th 2019 Mogo Wildlife Park welcomed its’ 9th Giraffe to its collecCon of Rothschilds’ Giraffes, with the birth of a male baby Giraffe on 3 August 2020. The baby was born to first Cme Mum, BinC, who was just amazing throughout her labour of close to 3 hours.

Zookeeper Chad and Mogo Wildlife Park’s giraffe keepers are so delighted to see the baby giraffe rise to his feet relaCvely quickly, and the calf is showing good signs of strength and health and is feeding well.

Zoo keeper Chad has posted this gorgeous photo of the latest new born at Mogo Wildlife Park saying : "Such a privilege to have been present to welcome this gorgeous baby into the world, but for then both mum and bub to come and interact virtually as soon as he could stand sCll has me lost for words".

Vinnies Announces New Program For Bushfire Recovery The St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn has today

“Our bushfire response so far has focused on supporCng people at the individual level, and we are so grateful to Vinnies Bushfire Appeal donors for enabling us to distribute cash to more than 4,560 households across Australia,” said Barnie van Wyk, CEO of Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn.

“Now as we move towards recovery, we will focus on projects with community-wide benefit. Today we are opening applicaCons to the Community Bushfire Grants Program.

“We appreciate that the Black Summer bushfires affected each community differently, and local residents know their own community’s needs beIer than anyone. That why we are meeCng with councils and community organisaCons all across the affected regions to work together to develop locally-tailored recovery projects,” Mr van Wyk said.

Ray Akhurst, Vinnies volunteer Bushfire Recovery Coordinator, has been providing support to affected individuals and communiCes since January and will oversee the grants applicaCon process.

“Our experience is that recovery is a long-term process and is best undertaken at the community level.

These local organisaCons have a good feel for the needs of the community as it recovers from bushfire.

“There will always be a need for individual support, and our conferences will conCnue to support people throughout this process. But we recognise we also need a community-wide perspecCve on how best to recover,” said Ray. “The nature of the project is very wide. We are not being prescripCve about the kind of project that comes forward. It may be infrastructure repairs, counselling, educaCon or caring for country programs.

“I hope we will be inundated with requests,” said Ray. This new program from Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn, which provides services to the ACT, Queanbeyan-Palerang, much of the South Coast region and Snowy Mountains region, will stand alongside recovery iniCaCves from Vinnies NSW. The applicaCon process for grants outside these areas has been announced separately by Vinnies NSW. Through the Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn Community Bushfire Grants Program, 70 grants of up to $20,000 will be provided to registered community organisaCons, helping them to administer their own local recovery projects.

“If you do fall in, try to get back onto your vessel as quickly as possible or get as much of your body out of the water as you can. Only swim for shore if it’s close by and you’re sure you can make it quickly,” Mr Barrell said. “If you have no other choice but to stay in the water, stay with the vessel and huddle with anyone else who is in the water to reduce the loss of body heat. If you’re by yourself, retain heat by drawing your knees to your chest, wrapping your arms around your knees and clasping your hands together,” he said.

Already the government has undone 13 years of benefits by allowing fishing of one sort or another in most of the Park’s southern sanctuary zones including Montague Island. The government’s amnesty comes on top of earlier acCon which allowed line fishing from the shore in most sanctuaries that had beaches or headlands. Now the bureaucrats have been quietly draFing the regulaCons to enshrine these changes in law.

CommenCng on 'lnnes presses to Switch off Biodiversity to allow bushfire rebuilds' It is really sad to hear this coming from the Mayor of our council. Our recently amended environmental regulaCons in NSW are already quite relaxed and have resulted in a 13 fold increase in land clearing. lt is very rare that developments are blocked or significantly slowed because of these regulaCons. And if they are slowed or blocked, it is because there is a real risk that threatened species and their habitat are likely to be significantly impacted and thus some miCgaCon is required to protect them.

SuggesCng that we remove these biodiversity safeguards (referred to as 'biodiversity constraints' by the Mayor), in the wake of the worst ecological disaster the region has experienced, is both negligent and shortsighted. We need to consider the impacts of our developments now more than ever, parCcularly because there has already been a rush to illegally clear land around houses aFer the fires.

People are taking liberCes with land clearing because of the "smoke screen" of the fires. We need to be more diligent with our environmental compliance now, than ever before. We also need to give our naCve species the best chance they have to recover. And this is most important at the urban/bushland interface.

Burnt areas are not 'effecCvely cleared' as the Mayor claims, they have the potenCal to recover, as evidenced by what we see around us now, and will once again provide important wildlife habitat. Furthermore, suggesCng that we do not rebuild to current bushfire management standards will only leave the land owner at risk when the next bushfire occurs.

Bushfire management standards are there to try and miCgate the risks of bushfires impacCng properCes and people. We need to build more defendable and fire resistant homes if we want to live in one of the most beauCful but fire prone regions of the world.

I understand that these "constraints" can be costly to recovering land owners. So instead of rewriCng the laws, causing further impacts to the environment and ignoring the risk of future fires, why doesn't the Mayor ask the government to provide grants to landowners looking to rebuild to a higher level of bushfire protecCon. Grants to help pay for the relevant consultants reports and council fees. Or provide addiConal resources to local councils and government departments to help speed up the processing of development applicaCons. There are plenty of beIer soluCons than simply switching off the only piece of legislaCon that protects our wildlife.

Back in 2016 aFer the bowling club was purchased to be part of the shire's gateway development in the Mackay Park precinct, the community expected two buildings, each specifically and sensibly purposed - one for the aquaCc/sports/leisure acCviCes and the other for the arts/cultural/community funcCons.

That approach would have enabled an economical staged construcCon phase for each facility and leaving plenty of room for expansion or addiCons as the shire's populaCon grew or as needs varied.

VERY BUSY by John Longhurst Vol 16 September 15th 2017 He the podcast 28 December 7th, 2017on ‘The Essence of Well-being’ on his mobile phone, unclipped his cleats and Volpaused 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 dismounted his bicycle to check his workout on the strava app; a 33.87 kilometre ride with an elevaCon gain of 98.1 metres, an average pace of 23 min/km and an energy burn of 1159.1 kcal. He had shaved twelve seconds off his PB and his heart recovery rate was well within the set limit. He nodded to himself and sent the results to his training peers, noCng, as usual, he was the first to complete the predawn cycling session.

Changed and ready to swim he closed his eyes and stretched his upper body as the bright orange upper lip of the morning sun slowly opened on the horizon, fading the ‘morning star’ Venus and slowly repainCng the sea an emerging blue. He checked his watch and noted the sunrise was on Cme as he entered the gently crashing surf and methodically swam across the cove and back.

With his back to the now open mouthed yellow smile of the sun, he exited the ocean, checked in the swim on his phone, sent the results and closed his eyes for three minutes of deep breathing and speed meditaCon. Showered, shaved and suited up, he sat before his measured porCon of organic muesli topped with half a sliced banana, twenty fresh blueberries and two hundred mls of skim milk, with all porCons entered into the wellness app.

With the early morning sun now twirling oranges and yellows amongst the clouds and streaking silver over the ocean, he consumed his breakfast on the balcony and studied the overnight movements on Wall Street from his laptop. AFer flashing to his own share porTolio, he noted a three percent gain in his personally researched and selected, speculaCve small cap stock and increased the holding by four percent. He took in a deep breath of the fresh morning and smugly noted he was outperforming the Standard and Poor's 500 Index by 1.3 percent.

He checked the reliability of the blue sky and generous warmth of the morning sun against the weather app and decided against his hand kniIed, cashmere pullover, paced the seventy three steps at moderate pace, to his car and decided entering the effort on his exercise app would be excessive.

With the satellite navigaCon set for the coffee shop, with a focus on traffic updates, he pressed play on his selected topics newsfeed, filtered from Facebook, and momentarily contemplated the issues of his world.

He texted ahead his order of a skim milk regular laIe and a piece of wholemeal toast with vegemite by voice command; avoided the congesCon on Reality Road, and arrived two minutes late to his preferred park twenty two metres from the coffee shop.

He flashed his phone for payment, sat down, studied his screen and tapped out three texts before the order arrived. Reassured his coffee was served in his prearranged keep cup for matching environmental and expediency reasons, he scraped the vegemite to the edges of the toast, opened his laptop and dealt with his emails. To his leF, he had his iPad opened at the sudoku and completed it in record Cme and now focused on the crypCc crossword, vainglorious in the knowledge both puzzles kept his mind sharp for his busy schedule.

His phone buzzed and in machine gun fire voice, he dealt with the problem, in earshot to all café patrons.

He crossed to the laptop and was late to the zoom meeCng. He made his apologies and issued beagle weekly : Vol 167 August 7th 2020

Reading Gadfly 123 By Robert Macklin Here’s the good news: the pandemic is just what we needed to save the world for our grandchildren. The way it’s going, Covid-19 will cause a worldwide depression at least Vol 16 September 2017 comparable to the15th Great Depression of the 1930s.

And that’s the good news?

You bet. It’s probably the only hope we have to survive and eventually to prosper.

Because if the depression now in the making is deep enough, the fall in economic activity might just be sufficient to put the brakes on the climate change that will otherwise destroy our way of life on planet Earth.

Let’s do the math. According to the latest research, global temperature has risen, on average, about 1 deg C. And if the nations who pledged action in the Paris agreement all kept their promises, we will reach 2 deg C by 2030, 3 deg C by 2050 and 4 deg C by 2075. By then, the world as we now know it will be unrecognisable.

Think of southeast Australia and the drought, the hailstorm, the mammoth bushfires and the pandemic. Spread that across the globe, add rising seas and multiply by five…without end. That’s the future we are preparing for our children and theirs. Indeed, it’s almost as though Gaia – the ancient Greek personification of the Earth – has roused herself to give us fair warning: ‘Here’s where we’re heading; we have one chance left; please grab it now.’

So, over to us. Do we have the gumption as a species to take that last card in the pack. Or (pun intended) will it get trumped by stupidity?

We have quite a lot going for us. Already, the pandemic has beheaded some of the atavistic shibboleths standing in our way – notably the ‘debt and deficit’ furphy that emerged each time government took action to regulate economic activity. These days even the most reactionary regimes give some support to those thrown out of work by Covid-19.

Instant worldwide communication has brought the plight of all nations to global attention; and we’re all learning from each other’s successes and failures. The struggle against an invisible virus has taken precedent over our foolish local conflicts against each other. These are our weapons in the making.

On the other hand, the temptation to politicians to use phoney patriotism to enhance their images is never far beneath the surface. Witness the silly, triumphalist cackling of Annastasia Palaszczuk, ‘defending’ Queensland against intruders from NSW and the ACT (with no active cases for many days). Not surprisingly, she’s next in line for election.

However, hers is barely a sideshow compared with the race that stops the world (or not) in the U.S. of A. Trump mounted on the Republican elephant has come to represent everything to be beaten over the jumps to the winning post.

And having divided his stables, shattered its health system, debased its reputation and shuttered much of its economy, he squirms in terror at the prospect of defeat in November.

He will do anything – anything at all – to avoid it.

His opponent Joe Biden, a fading 77-year-old aboard the Democrat donkey, can barely raise a canter against the elephant. The handicap system is gerrymandered. Putin is riding interference on ‘Social Media’. And the punters are drawn from a population where 60 percent reject the role of natural selection in the evolution of life on Earth. Yet these are the surrogates carrying humanity’s colours to the starting gate.

Peter Green, of course, but Emi7 Rhodes? By Trevor Moore Peter Green’s death made the news because, if you hadn’t heard of him, you had almost certainly heard of Fleetwood Mac and had almost certainly heard his most famous tune, Albatross. But before we get to Peter Green, there are15th two2017 other rock ’n’ rolls stars who have died in the last few days. And these are two people Vol 16 September 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 that you may never have heard of.

I was breakfasCng last week when my wife interrupted me (I like to breakfast in peace, I am a miserable SOB) and said “EmiI Rhodes has died.” I looked perplexed. “He was in a band called Merry-GoRound.” My perplexity persisted. I had never heard of EmiI Rhodes.

I did what I generally do in these situaCons. I turned to my friend Macman, to whom I know you all listen to every Wednesday aFernoon on 2EARFM. I texted him: “have you heard of this dude?”

He texted back “cannot recall anything of his”. This was a world first as Macman is the ulCmate source for rock trivia. We did not despair.

Emmit Rhodes then, and not-so-then Macman’s brother, resident in the US, has a background in the music industry so we duly turned to him. He remembered a story about a giraffe but then said that, no, that was someone else. He hadn’t heard of Rhodes.

Emmit Rhodes was one of those musicians who really ought to have made it but never did. A liIle research found an Emmit Rhodes playlist on SpoCfy. When I listened to it I could almost have been listening to The Beatles. There is a 2009 movie about him that was criCcally acclaimed on its release. It is called The One Man Beatles. Rhodes was born in California in 1950 and his musical career began at the age of 15 as the drummer for a band called The Palace Guard. The Palace Guard was successful in Southern California … but nowhere else. Occasionally Rhodes would come out from behind his drum kit and sing. The band was known for their style of dress, clothing themselves in militarythemed red coats, much like the costumes worn by The Kinks (see the cover of their first eponymous album) who were one of the influences on Rhodes along with The Who, The Small Faces, The Byrds and of course The Beatles. Indeed, perhaps the uniforms influenced the Beatles’ costumes on Sgt Pepper. Perhaps, but probably not.

AFer The Palace Guard broke up in 1966, Rhodes joined The MerryGo-Round on guitar. He switched to guitar, he said, because it was easier to carry around. The Merry-GoRound released one single called Live which was a minor hit in 1967. It was subsequently covered by The Bangles on their first album All Over the Place (1984). Merry-Go-Round’s second single was You’re a very lovely woman which Goldmine, the record collectors’ magazine, describes as a fabulous flipside. Linda Ronstadt recorded it on 1971 and it reached number 70 in the US. When you listen to the SpoCfy playlist the similariCes with The Beatles strike you immediately. The similarity is more with McCartney than with Lennon, but the producCon is similar in style to George MarCn’s. The melodies are catchy, and one can’t help but wonder why this man never made it. The songs are lyrically strong and the instrumentaCon and arrangements, though of their Cme, suit the songs. What a shame we beagle weekly : Vol 167 August 7th 2020

At perhaps the other end of the rock spectrum you can find The Cardiacs. Their front man Tim Smith also died last week. It is difficult to put The Cardiacs into a category. In a way they are like Neil Young; Vol September 2017 you16never quite15th know what you are going to get. SomeCmes genius 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111 July 12th 2019 gets inApril the27th way2018 of accessibility. Like Neil Young, The Cardiacs would produce something wonderful with one release and then something that was unlistenable the next. The late sixCes and early sevenCes saw Tim Smith with The Cardiacs the emergence of a category of rock music called prog-rock. This was supposed to suggest rock, but rock with some sort of intellectual buIressing. I suppose one could call The Cardiacs an prog-punk band. That they are a punk band is unquesConable; they make a lot of noise, they seem to be angry and they seem to have something to say.

They remind me of Georges Antheil, the avant garde 1920s composer, whose Ballet Mechanique required half a dozen mechanical pianos, a siren and a couple of aircraF propellers. UnCl computers came along no one could play this piece, which was wriIen as the score for a film of the same name. You cannot find The Cardiacs on SpoCfy but there are clips on YouTube. I recommend finding the clip of them rehearsing Jibber and Twitch here. If you listen to this, do not aIempt to do anything other than watch and listen. The Cming is impeccable. The energy is infecCous. My sister lasted 30 seconds. I love it - especially the bass player (Jim Smith) who is dressed in just his bass guitar and his jockeys. At 1:42, a dog barks. You are not sure whether it is supposed to be there or not. It’s a challenging number, amusing but brilliant. There are more songs on Soundcloud.

And that doesn’t exactly bring us to Peter Green but he’s the one that made the news this week. There’s not a lot to add. Albatross was released as a single in 1968 and remains Fleetwood Mac’s only UK number single. The coverage of Green’s death by the mainstream media focused more on his prowess as a blues guitarist and there’s no doubt that tracks like Black magic woman (also wriIen by Green) showcases his talents as a guitarist. But it is Albatross that is his lasCng testament.

Not only is a beauCful melody but the arrangement is superb. It would have been easy for the band to be carried away and to rev it up; they don’t. The song is almost the definiCon of laid back, Mick Fleetwood’s cymbals sound like the sea, John McVie’s bassline supplies the plaTorm for Green’s guitar. As a rock song, this is as good as it gets.

100 Years Ago : August 7th 1920 DEATH OF MR. CHAS. MCCAULEY. On Monday last, 26th inst., there was laid to rest in the Nelligen cemetery the mortal remains of Charles McCauley senr., who died at his residence ‘Moville’, Ryans Creek, in his 87th Vol 16 September 15th 2017 year. ….

The deceased 28 December 7th, 2017gentleman was born at Moville, County Donegal, Ireland. He left Ireland with his Vol 48 27th 2018 111April July 12th 2019 parents, the late Mr and Mrs Bernard McCauley, when two years of age. On arriving in NSW the family went to live at Wollongong. Some years later they moved to Broulee, where they kept the first hotel in that district. They returned to Wollongong some years later, having purchased the Harp Inn Hotel from Mr H. Osborne. Twenty years later Mr McCauley, with his brothers James, Robert, John, William and George, and their sister, the late Mrs James Murray of Conjola, moved to the Clyde River district, their father having purchased a large property at Mulwhy and Currowan where they commenced farming and grazing on an extensive scale. They built their own vessel, the ‘Revenge’, for shifting their produce to the Sydney and coastal markets, making regular trips in the season. …. On one occasion he was returning home on horseback when he found that well known outlaw ‘Yellow Jimmy’ was trying to break into a house in which two girls had shut themselves up. When ordered to clear out, Jimmy presented a gun and threatened to shoot. The answer was prompt and to the point. Mr McCauley spurred forward with uplifted whip as Jimmy’s gun miss fired, and in a few moments the outlaw was running for his life, covered with bruises and with his clothing cut to pieces with the whip. ….. He was the last of a band of pioneering brothers whose names will always be associated with the early days on the Clyde River.

INDUSTRIAL PEACE.– The Industrial Peace Bill was discussed in political circles in the city last Friday. Mr Austin Chapman, M.H.R. said it seemed to him that, taking the world as it is, rather than what we would like it to be, legislation of the kind was necessary. “No Doubt” he said “if a good many of these industrial troubles were quietly talked over, settlements would be arrived at to the satisfaction of all parties. I have tried it for myself and friends in the mining industry by the payment of extra wages, and then by enabling the workers to practically obtain a share of the profits. The results have always been satisfactory. After all human nature has to be considered. There is an old saying that prevention is better than cure. If industrial troubles can be got over by conference there will be no room for the extremist and the agitator. He will be without an occupation. “Such legislation, is to my mind welcome, because we are on the eve of big things in Australia, and the Australian worker compares favourably with other workers of the world.” Mr. Chapman said that his experience of the primary producer was that he wanted to be let alone. Happier relations existed between the employer and the employee in the country than in the city. In the country the employee was treated more like a member of the family. “High wages do not matter” he added. “The real cause is to get the value of the wages paid, and as a rule the worker wants to give this. Legislation such as that at present before Parliament will tend to improve the workers status and bring about happy and contented co-operation.”

WHERE IS HEAVEN?- This will be the subject at The Presbyterian Church Moruya on Sunday Evening next at 7.15. Since the War increasing interest has been roused in such discourses and even others than ordinary Church goers have deep reason to be interested. Mr. Fulton will, we understand, propound an idea other that those commonly held, so he should have a good congregation.

AN UNLUCKY MAN.– On Monday Mr. J. Honan, who is occupied in the timber industry, severely cut three of his toes with a broad axe. This is third time in seven months that Mr. Honan has had the misfortune to cut his feet so badly that stitching the wounds was necessary.

Bone broth has become extremely popular over the past few years because of its many health benefits.

Bone broth is a nutrient dense stock which is created by cooking up animal bones and connecCve Cssue. This broth is generally made from the bones and connecCve Cssue of animals such as chicken, fish or beef. Making it is preIy easy. Just add 2kg animal bones, 5 litres water, 40ml apple cider vinegar and simmer for 12 hours or longer if you wish. Then aFer cooling, strain leaving only a clear broth to drink. To add flavour, you can add herbs and spices and vegetables when cooking.

Note the apple cider vinegar is helpful in extracCng the nutrients out of the bones.

For convenience bone broth is also available in a powdered form and also a paste which can then be added to soups and other foods or you can simply use the broth as a nutriCous warm drink. We do also sell pure bone broth in a jar.

This highly nutriCous broth is both rich in minerals and vitamins, plus essenCal faIy acids and amino acids. If we are using animal bones, we may benefit from the high content of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and other trace minerals. The benefit of using fish bones means we will also gain the benefit of extra iodine which we know may be helpful for our thyroid health. The marrow which is extracted during cooking contains other minerals such as iron, boron, manganese, selenium and zinc. It also contains omegas 3 and 6 plus vitamin A and K2.

Not only is bone broth easily digested so that we are able to more readily obtain all of these nutrients, the gelaCn contained in bone broth may help to shield and heal our gut lining. The bonus is the amino acid glutamine which is contained in gelaCn is also extremely helpful in preserving the funcCon of our intesCnal wall thereby assisCng in maintaining good gut health. Drinking bone broth regularly may also be helpful for IBS and other inflammatory bowel diseases.

The gelaCn found in bone broth is also believed to be helpful for our joint health and drinking bone broth regularly may assist in treaCng and prevenCng arthriCs. Bone broth contains glucosamine and chondroiCn. The amino acids known as proline and glycine are also contained in gelaCn. Resilience and renewal – that’s the theme of this year’s River of Art Fes)val to be held across the Eurobodalla region from 18 to Vol 16 September 15th 2017 27 September.

28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 In the face of the hardship and destrucCon that much of the region has suffered this year, organisers of the annual River of Art want to showcase the community’s resoluCon and strength through its arCsCc creaCvity.

“The bushfires and then COVID-19 have caused so much suffering up and down our region. We want the River of Art FesCval to help people find enjoyment in the region’s arts,” said Di Jay, co-chair of the fesCval.

“Because of the COVID restricCons, we’ll have a “slimmed down” fesCval this year. But there will sCll be everyone’s favourites such as the River of Art Prize, Open Studios, workshops and exhibiCons,” added Vicki Lascelles, also the fesCval’s co-chair.

“And we’re very excited about some new features which we’ll be announcing in coming days. While COVID has meant we couldn’t go ahead with some of our regular features, it’s opened up new opportuniCes parCcularly via the internet,” Vicki said.

“As part of this, we’re redesigning the website which in these COVID days is one of the best ways to share and promote our art. The launch of the new website will be later this month,” explained Di. “One of our most exciCng iniCaCves will be the inclusion of an Arts Directory on the revamped website. This will provide a fantasCc promoConal service for our arCsts throughout the year via the internet. We’ll also have video features of arCsts so you can see them at work in their studios,” Vicki added.

Now in its 15th year, this year’s River of Art FesCval has been shiFed from May to September. The date change which was decided last year aims to take advantage of Spring when more visitors come to the region.

Program entries are being accepted up unCl 14 August. Inclusion in the program is free to all arCsts, makers, performers, musicians and venues in the Eurobodalla shire. RegistraCon can be accessed on the fesCval website – www.riverofart.com.au Ever conscious of the need to respond to the changing COVID-19 requirements, acCviCes will meet all COVIDsafe requirements at the Cme of the fesCval. These requirements are posted regularly by the NSW Government and a link will be created on the fesCval’s website once the program has been finalised.

The retrospecCve My Journey looks at the extensive body of work by arCst Lola Cullen over the past fiFy years.

Through printmaking, collage and painCng, Cullen represents and deconstructs the landscapes of the NSW outback, coast and urban interior.

Lola Cullen is from outback country, where animals run wild and for Lola the sky was the lowest ceiling. Acres of space allowed her imaginaCon to sore and spin...

The exhibiCon will run unCl the 10 October 2020 The Gallery Mogo is a CABBI venture, that is open to local and regional visual art and craF pracCConers.

All CABBI sponsors, members and the general public are invited to join us in a celebraCon of our local visual arCsts, with an exhibiCon that features the award winning, mulCmedia arCst, Nina Poulton.

Nina is a Long Beach resident, who is largely self-taught but has had a keen interest in art at an early age, but it was only in the early 80’s she sought tuiCon in oil painCng. Her early adventures around Australia and the World gave her a love of diversity, colour and scenery. Upon moving to Batemans Bay in 2004 she sought to expand her knowledge of other mediums by aIending numerous workshops and groups which she conCnues to do to this day.

Nina is accomplished across several mediums, expressing tradiConalism and realism while incorporaCng abstracCon, impression and contemporary aspects in her works. She is also acCve in the South Coast Art Community, being a member of CABBI, the South Coast Pastel Society and the Queanbeyan Art Society (QAS), while holding several group and solo exhibiCons locally and in Canberra. This involvement has extended to teaching beginners, parCcularly in relaCon to disability and children’s programmes.

In 2017 Nina was selected as one of four feature arCsts in the Canberra City Walk Charity exhibiCon, as well as feature arCst at the Queanbeyan Art Society and the Batemans Bay Library.

Nina has exhibited extensively from Queanbeyan, Radford College, Goulburn, Nowra and Kiama, as well as being the featured arCst for 12 months at the Lincoln Downs & Briars Restaurant Resort Batemans Bay. She is a regular parCcipant in the River of Art FesCval programme and has been shortlisted and as a finalist in the South Coast Pastel Society NaConal Open exhibiCons for 3 years.

Nina has received numerous awards for her works, with first prizes for Tribute to Friends, a mixed media and Summer Greens, a watercolour (QAS).
