editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, Imagine you have received an inheritance from a relaDve. Enough money to build a holiday house. Your family all have a go at the designs and decide on four bedrooms so that it might accommodate an extended family some day. Sounds reasonable. So do the Vol 16 September 15th 2017 two and three toilets.

Now imagine the project given to a Financial Manager to begin the project. The family are trusDng and have told the Advisor exactly how much they have to spend. The money belongs to the family and they know they have a limit they can afford.

The Financial Advisor engages a designer to draw up the house. All the bedrooms, all the bathrooms, all the toilets, the TV room with opDcal cabling and even the back deck and pool. So far so good. But then the plan goes to a team of quanDty surveyors who shake their heads and say that the design is well outside the budget.

So back to the drawing board. The next plan has three bedrooms a bathroom and ensuite, a carport instead of double garage, the TV is now in the family room and the pool is replaced with a spa on a deck half the size.

As expected the family are a bit disappointed but they realise that the changes are prudent to keep within budget. But then the Financial Advisor says “You can have exactly what you want. All you have to do is trust me.”

So they put their trust in the Advisor and agreed to give the advisor control of their finances.

Now the family have agreed to go ahead with the original house plans, with all the trimmings. But when they asked the cost they were told “It’s a secret. Just trust me” “But how will we pay for the difference between our budget and the final cost?” they asked.

“I will sell some of your belongings. You have assets that are “surplus to need” so I will sell them. And I will also take money from your other bank accounts and from the savings you have put aside for a rainy day. And then I might even take a out a loan for any shorJall”.

“But how much will that be and what will you be selling. Will you tell us before you sell it?”

“You only need to know what you need to know” said the Advisor.

“What ongoing costs will we have. Is that also a secret?”

“You ask too many quesDons. Just trust me. I have a business plan that says everything will be OK.” “Can we see the business plan please?” the family pleaded.

“No, sorry, no can do… its also a secret. And if it fails you will see we have a disclaimer in small print that makes us Teflon coated.

the community knows what the community knows It's official - Council have voted to accept a tender to build the new Mackay Park pool and hall. In an epic Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Council meeDng today the Councillors voted six to three to accept the tender.

Throughout the discussions the veil of secrecy around the approved tender price made discussions difficult.

All that could be revealed is that the councillors were voDng to agree to the contract price, agree to the GAP between the amount they have and the amount they need to pay the contract price and to agree to commit funds into the future to pay for the operaDon of the centre.

Councillors Mayne and McGinlay pressed to state that the community had no idea of how much was being voted on, where the GAP was coming from and whether there had been any scruDny of the ongoing costs.

What was revealed by General Manager, Catherine Dale, was that the final contract price would not be revealed for some Dme and that the GAP would be funded in part from the sale of the Moruya Racecourse, the dividend from the sale of Southern Phone funds, Real estate sales (read here the sale of the Batemans Bay Tourist InformaDon Centre, Batemans Bay Community Centre and the many parks and reserves Council finds surplus to needs), Crown Land revenues and internal restricted and un-restricted funds and SecDon 94A contribuDons. How much? That remains a secret.

It was revealed that the Audit and Risk CommiRee had been briefed on an outdated and flawed business plan and that if they did have an opinion on the financial risk of moving ahead with the project it was liRle more that an opinion as it was revealed that the commiRee was not privy to all the facts as these were a secret... even from a commiRee sworn to confidenDality.

What was revealed was that the majority of councillors believed that they had been briefed "ad nauseum" and there was nothing more to discuss. Basically it was a done deal.

Councillor Phil Constable aRempted to hold back the momentum of the decision by his peers to move ahead by puTng forward a moDon to defer the decision and instead call an Extraordinary meeDng that would be specific to the project and enable greater inclusion with the community. This moDon was turned down by the Innes led 'gang of six' of Brown, Thomson, Nathan, Tait and Pollock while supported by Mayne and McGinlay.

Next came a suggested moDon from Clr Mayne who, aUer hearing the source of funding to service the GAP recognised that the community were hearing of this for the first Dme and they should be asked if they approve the suggested revenue sources. The councillor clearly arDculated that while the community was aware of the project they were not aware that the decision being made affected each and every ratepayer in the shire who will be funding any shorJall in the project's projected revenues into the future. This moDon was also lost.

On two occasions the Mayor advised her councillors that "the community knows what the community knows".

The community have been fed lies and decepDons from the outset. Once again we heard more repeated lies at today's council meeDng. Council have had Dght control of the narraDve and, as such, have ensured that "the community knows what the community knows". With the approval of the tender to build the Mackay Park project now "moving forward" it will take some Dme for the community to realise that the expected revenues will be considerably less than the already flawed business case forecast, and that cost to build and the overheads to maintain and operate the facility will be considerably more.

Only then will "the community know what the community knows". Only then it will be too late.

Will Batemans Bay proposed Fishing Pla'orm be2017axed?

NSW Recent plans for the Batemans Bay Foreshore released by Eurobodalla Council show that a fishing plaJorm (above) that was proposed by John Holland, bridge contractor and included in their final plans presented to the community some Dme ago has not been included in the current plans being exhibited by Council. The plans were originally drawn up aUer advice from the Community Foreshore ConsultaDon CommiRee. No explanaDon has been provided to date.

The plaJorm would provide interacDon between land/water aRracDng the community to the foreshore for just one of the many planned acDviDes envisaged.

Apart from general community use it was considered the Fishing PlaJorm could also be used for Fisheries EducaDon Days and school fishing excursions and special events. A suggested improvement would be to swing the plaJorm around so the longer side faces the water to maximize the fishing space available.

New bushfire recovery support service A new case management service offering support to Vol 16 significantly September 15th 2017 those 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 111April Julyby 12th 2019 impacted the2018 Black Summer bushfires opens Monday.

The Eurobodalla Bushfire Recovery Support Service will assign bushfireaffected residents a single case manager, who can cut through the informaDon overload and find the right assistance throughout recovery.

Council’s recovery service coordinator Jane Moxon said the new service would help residents find and access the right support.

“We’re really providing a one-stop shop for people for whatever they need in their recovery,” she said.

“Instead of each household trying to work out what help is out there through chariDes, government agencies and other organisaDons, a case manager will be able to sit with them, work through it all and provide ongoing support for as long they need. It might be as simple as needing help with filling out forms, to working with Council on the rebuilding process, finding appropriate housing, approaching other agencies for help, or perhaps referral to expert mental health and counselling services.”

“We’re really pleased to offer this service - we understand that for some people it’s been a long Dme coming, but we look forward to geTng out there and providing that much-needed comprehensive support.”

The service will operate from a shopfront in Moruya’s Vulcan Street (next to Moruya Pharmacy), 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Council’s bushfire recovery helpdesk contacts remain the same – 4474 7434 and recovery@esc.nsw.gov.au “People can sDll phone, but if they are in the area and they do want to have face-to-face contact our doors will be open, following COVID requirements of course,” Ms Moxon said.

Avoid post-rain winter swims Eurobodalla residents should avoid swimming in local beaches, lakes and rivers for the next few days due to poor water quality. 15th In addiDon to dirty water thanks to runoff Vol 16 September 2017 28 December 7th, 2017a large amount of burnt debris is also Vol 48 from the heavy rain, 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 washing into local waterways.

Council’s environmental health coordinator Nathan Ladmore urged residents to stay out of the water, at least for the next few days.

“Swimming is not recommended during and at least one day aUer heavy rain at ocean beaches, and for three days at estuarine swimming areas because the waterways may be polluted,” he said.

“We expect more debris will be coming downstream from bushfire impacted areas over the next few days too. Murky or discoloured water oUen hides debris like logs and branches that can cause injury.

“People should always avoid swimming if there are signs of water polluDon such as discoloured water, fast flowing or strong smelling drains, or street liRer such as drinking straws, food wrappers or leaves floaDng in the water or on the Dde line.”

Council also warns that stormwater drains or lagoon openings can be sources of stormwater polluDon and are also best avoided during and immediately aUer heavy rain.

Eurobodalla Council regularly tests and monitors water quality in Eurobodalla Shire to ensure community health and safety.

Customers, employees and visitors across all Woolworths Group stores and sites in NSW and the ACT will be "strongly encouraged" to wear face coverings from Monday 3 August.

New compliance rules for gyms and fitness centres Gyms and fitness centres across NSW will be required to register their COVID Safety Plan and have a dedicated hygiene marshall on duty at all Dmes, the NSW Government announced today (July 29). The measures will take effect from 12.01am on Saturday August 1. Under the new rules, all gyms and fitness centres must: register and have a COVID Safety Plan have a dedicated COVID-19 Safe Hygiene Marshal on duty at all Dmes.

Gyms and fitness centres must take all reasonable steps to reduce the transmission of COVID-19. Businesses who fail to be compliant will risk facing a fine or venue closure.

Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello said the extra measures are necessary to stop the spread of the virus.

"Without proper COVID safeguards, they may present a transmission risk and that is why we need operators to put their customers first by registering their COVID Safety Plan," Mr Dominello said.

Mark E2ridge Youth Scholarship Fund A Youth Scholarship Vol 16 September 15thfund 2017has been established by 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 South Coast Careers College in memory of Mark ERridge, one of the college's regarded and respected trainers who passed away suddenly earlier this year.

Chief ExecuDve Officer of South Coast Careers College, Sarah WaRerson said of Mark ; "he worked with us, and a lot of local organisaDons, with local young people. " "Once in a while people are blessed to walk for a Dme beside a person who makes a posiDve difference in their lives. One such person was Mark ERridge.

"Mark was an advocate. An advocate of young people, of self-reflecDon, of life-long learning, of wisdom, of fairness and of growth. His life was dedicated to building a beRer future for young people and in having them realise the best about themselves.

"Mark made everyone feel important, he sought out posiDve characterisDcs to build a person’s confidence, and embedded strategies to enable beRer decision making and accountability.

Sarah said "His investment of Dme and paDence made a significant difference to so many people; people who went on to break generaDonal cycles of welfare dependency, of offending, of substance and alcohol abuse.

People who truly found the best version of themselves aUer his intervenDon. "Mark was taken from us suddenly; and as a friend and colleague, I know he was far from done. To conDnue his work and carry on his legacy is an honour and a giU. While he is completely irreplaceable, this scholarship fund will keep him acDve in the community of young people, the place where he found his greatest peace.

"Never to be forgoRen, his big booming laugh and sparkly blue eyes will live on in our memory. His advocacy and assistance will live on through the College and through this fund."

Scholarship funds will be allocated to students who require financial relief to offset the basic costs associated with their wellbeing, educaDon, training and employment.

Funding will be available throughout the year and will be accessible to those students who meet the eligibility requirements and whom a minimum of 3 Board Delegates determine should be recipients.

A Charles Sturt University PhD candidate is calling on rural and regional members of Parkinson’s NSW support groups to Volpar/cipate 16 September 15th 2017 in a new study.

28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 A Charles Sturt University PhD candidate from Coffs Harbour is inviDng rural and regional members of Parkinson’s NSW support groups to parDcipate in a new study.

The study by Mr Vincent Carroll aims to explore models of Parkinson’s support group leadership to idenDfy what makes and creates an effecDve Parkinson’s support group from the perspecDve of people with the disease, their caregivers, and support group leaders.

Mr Carroll, who is also a Parkinson’s Clinical Nurse Consultant at the Mid North Coast Local Health District and Parkinson’s NSW, said support groups play an important role in enhancing the coping skills and abiliDes of people living with the disease and their caregivers.

He hopes his study will help to inform the support groups and peak bodies, like Parkinson’s NSW, so they can build even stronger leadership and capacity.

“The need for support is a central part of living and dealing with the challenges Parkinson’s disease brings to an individual and the caregivers who live with them,” Mr Carroll said. “GeTng together with other people who are facing similar challenges allows everyone to share feelings, resources and experiences.

“UlDmately, my study will involve listening carefully to my research parDcipants’ stories, experiences, and journeys, so we can understand group leadership and what makes and creates an effecDve Parkinson’s support group.”

The study will focus on four different types of group leadership – including groups led by a community volunteer, a person with Parkinson’s, a caregiver, or a health professional. Mr Carroll said he chose to undertake the study with people living in regional and rural NSW to contribute towards strengthening the services in these areas.

“I wanted to work with Parkinson’s NSW for my PhD study as their focus is to provide support and services to people in regional and rural areas,” he said.

“ParDcipants will be asked to take part in a 45-90 minute video interview conducted by Mr Carroll.

AUer the interview, parDcipants will be asked if they would like to review the research findings and will be posted or emailed the iniDal wriRen summary.

A follow-up conversaDon for parDcipants to discuss the findings with Mr Carroll will then be organised. All responses will be treated confidenDally.

If you have been scammed or have seen a scam, you can make a report on the Scamwatch website, and find more informaDon about where to get help.

Scamwatch urges everyone to be cauDous and remain alert to coronavirus-related scams. Scammers are hoping that you have let your guard down. Do not provide your personal, banking or superannuaDon details to strangers who have approached you.

Scammers may pretend to have a connecDon with you. So it’s important to stop and check, even when you are approached by what you think is a trusted organisaDon. Visit the Scamwatch news webpage for general warnings and media releases on COVID-19 scams.

These are a few examples, but there are many more. If your experience does not match any of the examples provided, it could sDll be a scam. If you have any doubts at all, don’t proceed.

Phishing – Government impersonaDon scams Scammers are pretending to be government agencies providing informaDon on COVID-19 through text messages and emails ‘phishing’ for your informaDon. These contain malicious links and aRachments designed to steal your personal and financial informaDon. In the examples received the text messages appear to come from ‘GOV’ and ‘myGov’, with a malicious link to more informaDon on COVID-19.

Scammers are also pretending to be Government agencies and other enDDes offering to help you with applicaDons for financial assistance or payments for staying home.

Tips to protect yourself from these types of scams: Don’t click on hyperlinks in text/social media messages or emails, even if it appears to come from a trusted source.

Go directly to the website through your browser. For example, to reach the MyGov website type ‘my.gov.au’ into your browser yourself.

Never respond to unsolicited messages and calls that ask for personal or financial details, even if they claim to be a from a reputable organisaDon or government authority — just press delete or hang up. more informaDon at hRps://www.scamwatch.gov.au/

NSW Health issues advice on wearing face masks Wearing of face15th masks Vol 16 September 2017by the general populaDon should 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 be considered in situaDons where you are unable to maintain a physical distance of 1.5m.

Covering your face with a mask can provide some protecDon so long as it does not cause complacency or neglect of other measures.

The main value of wearing a mask is to protect other people, if the wearer is unknowingly infected but has no symptoms or has symptoms but cannot avoid leaving home, for example, to have a COVID-19 test.

If you can’t physically distance and choose to wear a mask it’s important you do it safely: Do not touch your mask or face as this contaminates the mask Do not pull your mask below your nose or chin Do not leave it hanging around your neck or on top of your head, and Do not touch your face.

You should change your mask when it becomes moist or if it is sprayed or splashed by fluids. Immediately perform hand hygiene if you accidentally touch the mask.

If you need to remove the mask: perform hand hygiene, remove and discard into the general waste bin (or washing machine if it is a cloth mask) and put another mask on.

If it is a disposable mask it should be thrown out whenever it becomes moist or wet or contaminated.

If it is a reusable mask it should be removed and replaced with a different mask if wet or contaminated – you may need 3-4 masks in rotaDon to manage this.

UOW’s Bega, Batemans Bay staff honoured for Vol 16 September 15th 2017bushfire 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 support Staff from the University of Wollongong’s Batemans Bay and Bega campuses have been recognised in the annual Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for their work in supporDng their communiDes during the Black Summer bushfires on the South Coast.

Jaimey Facchin, Campus Manager of UOW Batemans Bay, and Sam Avitaia, Campus Manager of UOW Bega, both received the Vice-Chancellor’s Special Award in acknowledgement of the tremendous responses of both campuses during the days and weeks aUer the bushfires that devastated communiDes at the beginning of 2020.

Nicola Bath, Learning Development Lecturer and AdministraDve Assistant at UOW Batemans Bay, received the Excellence in Community Engagement Award for her immense contribuDon to helping others during the crisis.

Ms Bath was at the campus in Batemans Bay as bushfires surrounded the town, taking in and feeding community members, ensuring they had a place to rest and sleep, and coordinaDng logisDcs with staff and students.

It was a heartbreaking Dme for the Batemans Bay and Bega communiDes, but the staff at both campuses did what they could to help, oUen while their own homes were under threat.

“Receiving this award is a great honour but also a reminder of the devastaDng events that unfolded last summer,” Ms Bath said.

“It is a tribute to all the courageous members of the community who sheltered at the Batemans Bay Campus during the fires and to my amazing family, friends and colleagues who supported me”.

In Batemans Bay, bushfires engulfed the coastal community and its suburbs over New Year’s Eve. Hundreds of locals took refuge at the campus on Hanging Rock Drive, including a newborn baby, children, dogs, elderly couples, birds, and even a horse.

There was no internet, communicaDons were down, and it was a mad scramble to find a place for everyone.

“It has been a really crazy Dme for us,” Ms Facchin said. “The fires began in November, around Kings Point, Durras and Bawley Point, and we were helping students throughout that Dme. It was really a crisis that went on for months for us. Then everything intensified over New Year’s Eve and it was like that for weeks. ConDnues……. beagle weekly : Vol 166 July 31st 2020

“We have a really close connecDon with the community here. Most of the staff on this campus have been students at UOW, and now work here. It is a special place to us. We wanted to protect the university but also protect and help our community in whatever way we could.”

Ms gave2018 special 28 December 7th, 2017 menDon to Professor Alison Jones, UOW’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Health and Vol Facchin 48 111April July 27th 12th 2019 CommuniDes), who organised for groceries to be delivered to the Batemans Bay campus in the days aUer the fires, when the staff were struggling to feed all the people they had taken in. Professor Jones also nominated Ms Facchin and Ms Avitaia for the Vice-Chancellor’s Special Award.

“We were able to give toiletries, bag of groceries, baReries to students and to people in the community who couldn’t get home or had lost everything. It was so helpful and made a big impact,” Ms Facchin said.

A week later, it was Bega’s turn. Just as the South Coast was reeling from the New Year’s devastaDon, fire swept into the Bega Valley. Again, the campus – which never lost phone or internet - became a place of refuge for the local community.

Ms Avitaia said more than 50 people, including staff, students, and friends, took shelter at the UOW Bega campus, or used it as a communicaDons hub. This conDnued for many weeks, as the community started to pick up the pieces of the catastrophe, with internet and power out through large swathes of the region.

“It is humbling to receive a Vice-Chancellor’s Awards,” Ms Avitaia said. “We just did what we needed to do at the Dme for our community, like anyone would do. We responded to what happened at the Dme. It is nice to be recognised but it was something that anyone would do in the same circumstances.”

In a true example of their community spirit, Ms Facchin and Ms Avitaia have decided to donate their prize money from the Vice-Chancellor’s Special Award to helping the community through bushfire-related research.

They will donate their joint $4000 winnings to UOW’s Global Challenges Program, which earlier this year announced that half of their research grants will be set aside for disaster response on the South Coast.

“It has given us the opportunity, through the prize money, to contribute to further bushfire and emergency response research,” Ms Avitaia said.

Stepping up the local food supply Summer bushfires and COVID-19 have not dampened the15th enthusiasm of a group of Vol 16 September 2017 28 December 7th,SAGE 2017 Inc, (Sustainable Vol 48 2018 111April July 27th 12th 2019 volunteers from Agriculture and Gardening Eurobodalla) working on the latest SAGE project, Stepping Stone Farm.

SAGE president Mark Barraclough says recent events have given the group an even greater reason to see the Stepping Stone Farm project come to fruiDon for the community.

“The bushfires highlighted how quickly the Above: Mark Barraclough and Joyce Wilke working on plans for the new SAGE Stepping Stone Farm supply and distribuDon of food coming from outside our region can be disrupted by power outages, highway closures, and other issues,” said Mr Barraclough.

“Luckily the Moruya SAGE Farmers Market and e-market, and a few local stores and direct outlets that sell local produce were able to stay open throughout the fires and supply customers without disrupDon. This meant that our market garden farmers could conDnue pick and sell their produce and keep their livelihoods and staff.”

Mr Barraclough said that COVOD-19 presents new issues for our community.

“Once again, our small, local food system has supported people wanDng to avoid supermarkets and crowds and buy healthy, affordable, fresh produce locally, either at the farmers market or emarket, from smaller outlets or direct from farmers. Buying direct means that your food might only be touched by the farmer or a few people which is quite different from how food is processed in a large corporate food system.”

SAGE’s Stepping Stone Farm project is an incubator program on a working farm west of Moruya. It aims to train aspiring growers to become successful commercial market gardeners.

SAGE recently recruited Joyce Wilkie, a farmer and educator with more than 35 years’ experience to lead the hands-on intern training program.

“AdverDsing for the first four intern posiDons is underway now with the program expected to kick off in September. The intern project is unique, it will create local jobs, secure the food supply and meet the growing demand for local produce,” said Joyce.

“We believe that sustainable farming enterprises help the community through increased resilience, new jobs, economic growth, and developing farmers who preserve ecological values for the health of the whole region. Batemans Bay Toastmasters Club adapts to a COVID world As we all struggle to come to terms with the new normal, taking on a volunteer job which covers an area from the South15th Coast to the South Australian border and from Goulburn to the Victorian border, Noal Vol 16 September 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 Annabel from Batemans Bay Toastmasters Club has done just that. 5m of dune lost at Surfside highlights resident's concerns Mcleods Beach was Vol 16 September 15thone 2017of the many beaches across the region impacted by 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 the recent Eastern Low that passed through over several days bringing rains, floods and high seas. Local resident Viv Sethi says "Mcleods Beach has lost about 5m of dune and we did not get the brunt of the storm. Luckily there were only 1.6m high Ddes. The shrubs in the pics were on the dune. Won't be so lucky in Sept. when we have 2m Ddes."

Mr Sethi is one of the many residents of Surfside who are now waiDng on the Member for Bega to iniDate acDon aUer he recently advised that "the NSW Government has already announced and made clear it is finalising protecDons for Surfside and will involve a mulDmillion dollar soluDon." The Beagle has requested details from the Member for Bega of when the announcement was made, who made it and what was stated as searches for the 'announcement' by both The Beagle and by the NSW OpposiDon and other interested parDes have failed to find evidence of any such announcement. As yet there has been no response from the local member. The Beagle has also been advised that this is news to the Project Reference Group that the Member for Bega appointed to “guide” the Surfside erosion study. "The PRG was told very clearly that any miDgaDon for Surfside would be decided by an unnamed task force as part of the Coastal Management Program.

"Wamberal property owners are planning a class acDon against their council and the State government for their failure to act on the proposal for a revetment wall to protect their properDes. This may explain the about face on Surfside, but we would be interested to learn when and where the Government announcement was made and details of the proposed work," the Project Reference Group member said.

Ian Hitchcock, Eurobodalla Regional Coordinator of NSW Coastal Alliance, has also raised his groups concerns asking the Eurobodalla councillors "When (not if) Batemans Bay is hit with a storm of the 1974 storm event, what damage will be done? Will lives be lost? Who will get the blame?"

He has openly asked them to consider Council's policies and possible acDons saying "You have seen what is happening at Wamberal on the Central Coast, and who is geTng the blame. Not the State Government that has indirectly prevented the planned revetment wall from proceeding. Not the Coastal Council that sits behind the scenes and directs NSW’s coastal management operaDons. Not the state and council bureaucrats who implement the Government’s wishes. That’s right. It is the elected Central Coast Council who will “carry the can”.

"So far, you have ignored the wishes of the Surfside community and rubber stamped the recommendaDons of your planning bureaucrats. If this conDnues, you could end up endorsing a Coastal Management Program that sacrifices Surfside to the sea."

"Please get involved in the Surfside erosion issue and let Andrew Constance and the State Government know that the community wants “hard” protecDon to recDfy the man-made damage caused to the northern shoals and spit that once protected Wharf Road and the Lower Surfside area. We Must Future-Proof Community Infrastructure Since the bushfires, I have spoken with so many local community groups about their experience and they all tell me the same thing – we need to start future-proofing our community infrastructure now.

Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 111 July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Last week, Anthony Albanese and I met with the Durras Progress AssociaDon to hear firsthand about what

needs to be done, and it’s a similar story all along the coast.

When your community has one road in and one road out, you need to make sure that during an emergency the lights are kept on and communicaDon is reliable. In 2020, you shouldn’t lose your phone and internet just because the power went out, and it shouldn’t take weeks for power to be restored because the wooden poles were destroyed.

So I feel absolutely flabbergasted that in 2019/20, the Morrison Government did not spend a single dollar of its $200 million disaster recovery fund, including the dedicated $50 million for disaster miDgaDon. The government said the fund was not needed – but clearly the Prime Minister has not been listening. There is so much to be done.

Everywhere I go, I hear about how we need emergency power in our community halls and fire-proof electricity poles. We need to bring forward the funding for the Princes Highway and make sure we have reliable telecommunicaDons, including fixing the black spots along the highway.

I’ve heard too many stories about the lack of disability access in our evacuaDon centres. People living with a disability had nowhere to go and in too many cases it was up to their advocates or carers to go it alone.

This is just unacceptable.

Perhaps these funds could be used to build a dedicated Emergency OperaDons Centre in Moruya, instead of forcing our response teams to work in a local community hall on trestle tables from Bunnings.

The government must start geTng serious about ensuring the experience of so many local people during the summer bushfires never happens again. The response needs to start in our communiDes and I will conDnue fighDng to make sure we get the support we need to prepare.

In the same month, we gave you a Brief of Evidence which contained leRers from a number of community groups including the Batemans Bay Swimming Club, Swimming NSW, the Soldiers Club, Elite Energy, Surf Life Saving, fitness professionals, U3A, CWA, the Public Schools SporDng AssociaDon (with 11 member schools and some 4,000 school children), St Peters College in Broulee, St Bernards in Batehaven, Aboriginal Elders, to name some, all of whom opposed the demoliDon of our 50m pool and your proposal to replace it with a 25m pool.

Your own survey revealed overwhelming support for a 50m pool to be included in the development (either indoor or outdoor). You claimed that a 50m pool is 'unaffordable' yet we proved you wrong with our independent Order of IndicaDve Costs. You said there would be room in the final plan for future expansion. That is untrue. In 2016, your general manager negoDated a purchase of the Bowling Club in Batemans Bay for $2.7m despite local real estate agents at the Dme claiming the market value to be somewhere between $1.1 and $1.5m. The Valuer General valued this land at $1.5m in the same year. Your council very quickly classified this land to 'operaDonal' to shut out any community input into its future use.

Your general manager claims that this purchase was 'strategic'. Certainly, this purchase was never meant for the benefit of the community who submiRed Expressions of Interest at your council's request. We then learned that the building was 'uninhabitable' and subsequently bulldozed to allow the RMS to move in. You have squashed two very different faciliDes onto the one site against the wishes of stakeholders. You have failed to honour your promise to stand shoulder to shoulder with the community.

Why have you turned your back on what the majority in this community have told you Dme and Dme again that it wanted?

“Batemans Bay needs a gateway project that really showcases the dynamism and opDmism of our beauDful part of the world. The development recently agreed by the Council, is short-sighted and will not meet the needs of the Batemans Bay Community. Worse, in order to pay for this development it is likely the Council will sell off other valuable community assets including the Batemans Bay Community Centre. A peDDon to keep the Batemans Bay Community Centre in public ownership with over 1,000 signatures, was tabled in Council last year, yet Council conDnues to operate outside the public interest.”

“Councillors McGinlay, Mayne and Constable offered the Council the opportunity to more carefully review this project by referring it to an independent review, but this was turned down by the six other Councillors.

This is yet another example of the Council making decisions without taking the Dme to carefully consider the consequences.”

Labor will be running candidates for the next Council. If we are elected we will work with the Batemans Bay community, to make the complex what it should be, a valued and important asset for the community.

Diving in the Deep End! Eurobodalla Councillor Anthony Mayne posted the following to his social media page: Diving in the Deep End! This Tuesday at Eurobodalla Shire Council we vote on the $55m plus Batemans Bay Mackay Park proposal (pool, gym, arts/entertainment facility). Thank you for your ques*ons and feedback in prepara*on for the debate. Major themes: How much will it cost in total? How will Council/Community pay for it? What assets will we sell to cover the shor?all? What is the opportunity cost (e.g. what will you go without now and into the future to pay for this project)? What is the ongoing opera*onal costs? Can we see the business case? Will Council s*ll sell the Batemans Bay Community Centre? And the answer to each of the above = Commercial-in-Confidence. I voted against the sale of our community owned #Moruya horse racing track mainly because we could not tell you the sale $ price. I had the privilege of working with the community to keep its Centre in the Bay, to try and stop the sale of green spaces (Durra, Broulee etc), to preserve parks (e.g. Pre+y Point). So if Council is to sell off such assets across the Shire to pay for the facility in the Bay, then our community needs to know these details. Batemans Bay is a major popula*on hub. The $51m in grant funding is terrific. Yet the en"re Shire will fund any shor$all in the build cost through the sale of its assets.

Any shor?all in the opera*on costs will be paid for by your rates. How can Council represent you and your views and wishes if you do not know the price and how any shor?all will be made up? So what is the en*re Shire prepared to forgo now and into the future to ensure that the Mackay Centre can proceed in the Bay? We are a resilient community. The bushfires led into covid and now we find ourselves in a recession. So as a community that has gone through so much together, I hope we can have a transparent and engaging debate on Tuesday so that we can best represent your desires for our future together. I will ask each of the ques*ons listed above on Tuesday to that we can hopefully have as transparent a debate as possible on what is a major project for our community.

Sir – Please allow me space for some comments I would like to make in regards to rumours and press publicaDons about comparisons of2017 recent flooding of this district with the flood of 1925. These publicaDons are very misleading.

Vol 48 April 111 July 27th 12that2018 2019 What happens Bodalla, Coila or anywhere else has no bearing whatever to the Moruya district. That higher rises were reported on other parts of the coast recently than in 1925 could well be. I understand that the flood of ’25 was not serious in Bodalla, but the following year Bodalla suffered a big flood which did not have an effect on Moruya.

The disturbance of ’25 appeared to be confined to the Moruya-Deua areas with a spill over of lesser proporDons to the Clyde River and Bodalla catchment areas.

If people contemplaDng building on flood prone sites are under the impression that the recent flood was a record in rise, they are on a collision course with disaster. The granDng of building approvals means nothing.

It is doubJul if it is generally known that for every foot rise at Moruya Heads, there would be not less than a ten foot rise at Yarragee, the difference progressively increasing from the Heads. When I speak of Yarragee I refer to Mr Ted Hunt’s property which I sold to him some 16 years ago. My observaDons were taken at Yarragee and Moruya. I will now give a descripDon of the ’25 flood.

Previous to the main flood, several minor floods occurred in a period of six weeks and during this period it rained almost every day, with the river somewhat swollen more or less all that Dme. In the late aUernoon on the eve of the disaster the rain came in torrents and worsened through the night. By morning the upriver water started a rapid rise of 25 feet in one hour. The rain then eased somewhat and I hoped the worst was over, but late that aUernoon a strong wind from the south sprang up, increasing during the night to a furious gale with almost conDnuous claps of thunder and rain, the like of which I had never seen before or since. In one burst I registered six inches in 40 minutes.

The roar of the deluge on the roof, the howling gale, the crashes of thunder and the noise of the water tearing over the farm flats were unbelievable.

By daylight the river had risen a further 35 feet, a total rise of 60 feet with the flats under an average of 39 feet. This volume of water about half a mile wide was roaring over the flats at terrific speed, causing great waves to break on the hillside like a rough sea on the beach.

On the flat were about six red gums, the largest being about six feet in diameter. The two largest trees were sDll remaining that morning. I watched as one by one they keeled over and in a few minutes were bowled right over and were carried away like matchwood. The rise held at the level for a short Dme, then receded and at nighJall porDon of what was leU of the flat was showing.

That day about noon I saddled up the horse and rode to town for some provisions which were scarce in Moruya as well as on the farm. By that Dme the level had dropped a lot in town, but was sDll knee deep on the footpath at the Commercial Hotel (now the Monarch).

“The Examiner’ of 21st instant is to hand and I would draw aRenDon to three pictures on page 11, staDng that the pictures were taken at the peak of the ’25 flood. This is incorrect. I saw the flood at this stage and there were flood marks everywhere from 2 to 3 feet above that photographed. The level was to the top of the bar counter of the Commercial at its peak.

The next day we knew the worst. Our farm was ruined. Up to six feet of sand was leU on the best part of the flat and the rest was torn about and had the appearance of a rocky sea shore.

It took years to level and get it partly producDve again. There was no pracDcal way to remove the sand. No other flood breaking the banks at Yaragee caused property damage. All farmers suffered heavy losses in various ways and not only farmers suffered. All other floods in my Dme of 74 years were minor by comparison.

It is important to menDon that 50 years prior the ’25 flood there occurred another such flood of shorter duraDon, with the rise levels about the same, according to a member of the family who saw both the 1875 and 1925 floods.

In conclusion, may I add that should a rapid rise occur of the kind previously menDoned which would be about12 feet in one hour at Moruya and catch the residents of the Moruya Caravan Park unawares at night they would be in grave danger. These disasters have happened before. They could happen again. Who knows?

Reading Gadfly 121 By Robert Macklin It is time to kill a Zombie. Unless we do, we will have endured the whole Covid-19 horror story for nought. And it goes to the heart of an economic recovery that provides our only chance to avoid the threats of armed Vol 16 September 15th 2017conflict – war - that are fizzing beneath the surface in our part of the world.

28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 2018 111April July 12th 2019 The “Zombie” in question is no fabled beast but a deformed idea, named by the American Nobel Laureate, Paul Krugman. It’s repeatedly killed by reason but revived by the atavists who deny climate change, natural selection and empirical evidence. It equates government finances – surpluses and deficits – with ordinary household debt. In fact, they are as different as breathing air and seawater.

Recently, my friend and former editor, Crispin Hull, put the Australian case beautifully. What follows, with his permission, is a summary of his column edited only for space: ‘There is no equivalent of a debt collector at the front door demanding that the Australian Government repay its debt.

Nor will there ever be. To the contrary, there is an orderly queue of businesses and individuals desperate to buy more Australian Government bonds. Why? Because they know the government will never, cannot ever, default.

‘Government finances are radically different from household finances. But politicians, especially on the conservative side, forever talk about the Government as if it were a household with a bloated credit-card debt about to send it into bankruptcy.

Nations, like Australia, which issue their own currency and whose debt is nominated in that currency cannot default and cannot go bankrupt.

‘Countries like Greece and Spain were silly enough to join the Euro zone in the belief that it gave them status. Instead they were throwing themselves upon the mercy of the European Central Bank with debt that had to be repaid in Euros. The European Bank, dominated by Germany, would only bail them out at a very heavy price.

‘The Australian Government’s Covid stimulus package is a classic case of a government worrying about debt [and] dishing out money as if it were a charity when it should be ensuring it is getting value for money. The key to the best economic result is not elimination of debt but getting the most production from the economy.

‘The government should just guarantee a job – 35 hours a week on the minimum wage ($560) - for everyone who wants to work. There is plenty of productive work to be done and on-the-job-training in Australia. Instantly, unemployment would vanish and all the dole money would go into the economy to be spent on goods and services largely produced by the private sector.

‘The destructive effect of long-term unemployment would end; people would have long term job security. That means less psychiatric illness and people staying at home with sick pay rather than spreading the infection.

Once employed in the minimum-wage government scheme, all of the bureaucratically expensive and often fruitless effort to get find these people jobs in the private sector during a bust could be re-channelled to supervise them as public-sector employees to do any amount of work begging to be done for which they could be trained: land care, care of old and young, call centres and so on. [To say nothing of the major renewable energy and social home building projects crying out for government investment.]

‘This stuff is called Modern Monetary Policy. Australia and other developed countries have to recognise that the neoliberal economic model which minimised the role of the government, lauded the private sector and gave central banks control over interest rates so they could control inflation was effective up to a point. Covid or not, with interest rates hovering around zero and the private sector failing to provide enough secure, decently paying jobs or to give wage earners a reasonable share of rising productivity, we have arrived at that point.’

Benevolence—a review by Trevor Moore Julie Janson, Magabala Books, ISBN978 1 9259 3663 3, 2020, 345pp Now, here’s a book that I would not normally have bought and read. I am ashamed to say16 it.September I was in Moruya Books when Janice pressed it into my hand and said that I should Vol 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 read it.April She27th was2018 right.

And you should read it too, especially if, like me, you are a 111 July 12th 2019 privileged white person. The Black Lives MaRer movement is forcing many of us to confront some uncomfortable truths about our society and someDmes, to be frank, about ourselves.

Benevolence is a novel that tells a story from the perspecDve of a Darug woman called Muraging who was born in the early part of the 19th century. She was renamed Mary James by the colonisers whose hypocriDcal and misguided interpretaDon of ChrisDanity is a backdrop to Mary’s story. Benevolence is set around the Hawkesbury River area, the home of the Darug people, in ParramaRa and Sydney.

The story covers the years 1816 to 1842 and is interwoven with colonial historical events that impacted on the lives of the Darug, and no doubt other, first peoples. One chapter begins “Governor Macquarrie departs for England on the Surry. He is sent off with affecDon by waibala [the colonising whites]. He is sent off with relief by the families of aboriginal people whom he has massacred.”

This maRer of fact descripDon of events runs through the enDre narraDve. Janson’s wriDng is clear and concise.

She never uses two words when she can get away with one, and she uses short sentences. Her style emphasises the experiences that her heroine suffers and, very occasionally, enjoys. It is two thirds of the way through the book when the proclamaDon of terra nullius is made, simply and effecDvely. Terra nullius is a principle that is used to jusDfy a claim to a territory on the basis of its occupaDon. Australia and Canada are perhaps the most infamous examples, though they are not the only examples. In Australia, as Janson says, it was Richard Bourke who proclaimed that Indigenous Australians could not sell or assign land, nor could an individual person acquire it, unless they were given it by the Crown.

Mary’s story is a journey through her life told through her eyes. The reader follows her as she struggles to live with the dreadful events of colonisaDon (seRlement or invasion - more the laRer than the former). It is easy to say that we should view the events of history, whether in Australia or elsewhere, through the eyes of a person alive at that Dme. This would excuse us from singing the words to the third verse of the 19th century hymn All Things Bright And Beau*ful which says: The rich man in his castle, The poor man at his gate, God made them high and lowly, And ordered their estate.

According to this hymn, god is the jusDficaDon for the state of the world. It is a weak excuse. The BriDsh Victorians used a warped view of god to jusDfy not only class disDncDon but also racial discriminaDon. There are things that are absolute: a moral code contains principles that should at least be fair and respect differences and exist independent of applicaDon. Unfortunately, we are sDll a long way from that. And it is this that makes Janson’s book required reading for those of us, including me, who do not oUen think about these things.

Besides the important historical backdrop, the story is a good one that romps along and, because Janson is such a good writer, it is easy to read. I hope that saying it took me only a couple of days to read it is a compliment to its author. I certainly hope so. Janice of Moruya Books is hoping, pandemical restricDons permiTng, to invite Julie Janson to one of her literary luncheons. I for one will be there. You should be as well … but only aUer you have read this book.

Post script: they say things come in threes and along with Janson’s book I am reading two other books, both nonficDonal, covering related material. The first is Cassandra Pybus; Truganini, a remarkable woman who lived through the almost total eliminaDon of the Tasmania Aborigines. The second is Alison Alexander’s The Ambi*ons of Jane Franklin who was the wife of the governor of Tasmania and is described as a Victorian lady adventurer. I will let you know how I go.

Miss O’Leary is leaving the store and Mr. C. Nixon takes her place at the drapery counter. Mr. E. Taylor is trying his luck elsewhere and Miss A. Love has gone to Sydney. Mr. McIntryre, snr. is leaving Brou and taking up his residence at the Presbytery, Bodalla.

FISH GOING TO WASTE.– Mr. H. Whitehead, who has just returned to Sydney from a trip for fish along the South Coast, states that at Narooma he saw a wonderful exhibition of Nature’s prodigality with fish.

“A shoal of salmon,” he says, “came into the harbor, which is only a little pocket inlet on the coast protected by a bar, and went up the river. They were pursued by sharks, larger tailer, and kingfish, and occasionally my fishing companions and I could see the leap of startled salmon away from their enemies.

When the shoal reached our boat we could hardly see the water for fish. It looked as if we could walk ashore on the backs of the fish, they were so numerous. As far as we could see in every direction the salmon appeared. Evidently the fish did not like the place as most of them went out on the next ebb.

Beyond catching a few for bait, no one makes any use of these Australian salmon at Narooma.

A HAPPY COMMUNITY.– Mr. Ben McCauley, J.P., informs us that Nelligen was never better served officially than at the present time. The schoolmaster, Mr. Cameron is, apparently, a pedagogue to the manner born; the postmistress, Mrs. S. Harkus one of the most obliging officials, probably, to be found on the South Coast; the officer in charge of the Police Station, Constable Bently has a bent in the right way in the discharge of his multifarious duties; besides these the local boniface, Mr. Neate, is a very popular entertainer, and an exceptionally conscientious dispenser of the cup that cheers.

OBITUARY.– The Grim Reaper’s sickle has been very busy in our midst lately, garnering in the old and young. On Saturday morning last another of our old and esteemed residents, Mr. James Lynch, passed peacefully to sleep at the age of 82 years. Mr. Lynch, who was a native of Araluen, was the second eldest son of the late Mr. James Lynch, who in the olden days kept the hotel at Mullenderree known as The Ark, situated on the water’s edge on the opposite side of the road to where the Criterion Hotel now stands. beagle weekly : Vol 166 July 31st 2020

Calamari pickled fennel bouillabaisse sauce and macadamia Ingredients: Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Calamari: 28 December 7th, 2017 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 2Vol large calamari wings 50ml canola oil Sea Salt to taste Bouillabaisse: 2 small snapper carcasses, with heads 1 large fennel bulb roughly chopped 1 onion peeled and roughly chopped 1 whole bulb of garlic cut in half 50g tomato paste 50ml red vermouth 50ml brandy 100ml white wine 2g saffron threads 2 bay leaves, use fresh if you can find them 3 sprigs of thyme 20ml canola oil Garnish: 1Tbsp toasted fennel seeds 50ml pouring cream 50g macadamia nuts Sea salt 2 sprigs of dill Pickled fennel: 2 medium sized fennel bulbs 5g fennel seeds 30g castor sugar 100ml brown rice vinegar (this can be found at any good Asian supermarket) or subsDtuted with a good quality champagne vinegar 50ml water Sea salt

Method: Calamari: Using a blunt knife scrape all the outer membrane off then wash the calamari, ideally ask your fishmonger to do this for you. Season with the canola oil and a couple of pinches of salt Vacuum pack the seasoned wings and cook in a water bath at 60.C for 20 minutes. You could use a ziplock bag with the air pushed out, and cook using a thermometer in a pot of water on the stove at 60.C. Most slow cookers sit around 60.C so this could be used, but check the temperature first AUer 20 minutes place the bags of calamari in ice water for at least 1 hour or unDl it has chilled completely Cut open the bags, remove calamari and drain on paper towels. Using a sharp knife cut lengthways into long ribbons about 2mm thick You can make this the day before and store in an airDght container in the fridge, but it is best served fresh

Method: Bouillabaisse ...Clean any blood clots, guts and gills from the fish bones, ask your fish monger to do this for you, or ideally use the leUover bones from another dish. Preheat your oven to 220.C and place the fish bones in a deep roasDng tray and roast at 220.C for 20-30mins flipping the bones half way through. The bones should be dark brown but not burnt. This can be done a day before but it must be stored in a airDght container otherwise your fridge will keep the smell of the bones for a few days. In a large pot heat the canola oil, add the fennel, onion and garlic and cook on a medium heat unDl they are lightly browned. Turn the heat to low and add the tomato paste, cook sDrring constantly with a wooden spoon for about 2 minutes. Deglaze the pot with the red vermouth, brandy and white wine. Bring to the boil and reduce on a high heat unDl it has reduced by half, sDrring occasionally so it doesn’t burn. Place the roasted fish bones in the same pot and cover with cold water so it just covers the fish bones. Bring to a boil and skim all the foam that rises to the top off, using a ladle then turn down to a simmer.

Add the toasted fennel seeds, thyme, bay leaves and the saffron. Simmer the sauce for 30 minutes skimming occasionally. Strain through a fine sieve, a fine mesh chinois can be bought from any good culinary shop and is invaluable. In a clean pot reduce the sauce over a medium to high heat Dll it starts to thicken and the flavours intensify. You should have about a 300ml yield. Remove from heat and whilst sDll warm using a sDck blender blend in the cream and season with salt to taste. If not using straight away you can chill store this in the fridge for about 2 days but can be frozen if making a big batch conDnues…………. beagle weekly : Vol 166 July 31st 2020

In a small sauce pan, gently toast the fennel seeds unDl they turn slightly brown and become aromaDc. Add the vinegar, water and water Heat the pickle up to just under a boil and season with the sea salt to taste. Let the pickle cool down at room temp, this can be made well in advance and be stored in the fridge To prep the fennel, trim all the fronds off. Top and tail the bulb leaving about 3cm of stem on. Cut the bulbs in half from the root to the stem. Using a sharp knife or ideally a mandolin cut thin slices across the face of the bulb. In a saucepan gently warm the pickle up and strain through that chinois over the sliced fennel. Allow to cool at room temp and place in the fridge unDl ready to use. Making big batches of this pickle is great, stored in a pasteurised airDght jar this will last for months and the flavour will develop with age.

To plate: Pull the fennel and calamari out of the fridge and let it come up to room temp (about 20 minutes).

Using a small saucepan gently warm the Bouillabaisse. Alternate the calamari and pickled fennel along the middle of the plate Spoon the Bouillabaisse over and around the calamari and fennel. Spoon the grated macadamia over the dish. Arrange the dill Dps over everything Chefs /ps: Make a big batch of the bouillabaisse and freeze for future use. This can be used for different dishes such as sauce for other dishes, or the base for a soup stock.

The award announcement was live streamed with arDsts, judges and public all connected via social media.

Cameron Richards has beaten out an outstanding collecDon of 38 finalists to win the 2020 Shirley Hannan NaDonal Portrait Award.

Quite incredibly, Richards, who is based in Western Australia, has no formal art educaDon and unDl now has used painDng as a creaDve outlet that contrasts with his qualificaDons in physiotherapy.

His acrylic on canvas creaDon enDtled ‘Miss Priya Premkumar’ aRracted the acclaim of the NaDonal Portrait Gallery Director and guest judge, Karen Quinlan AM, who made the announcement tonight that was streamed due to the ongoing Covid-19 situaDon. SHNPA 2020 guest judge Karen Quinlan AM, was impressed with the quality of all the finalists but reserved glowing praise for the winner, "The ar*st really captured a great portrait, it reflects on two different worlds and the challenge that Priya would have had juggling expecta*ons of her family. I feel like I engaged with her and in a sense could almost talk with her.

Everything is working and it’s definitely the winning portrait in the show.”

Richards, who picks up $50,000 (Australia’s richest prize for realisDc portraiture) for his work, said the portrait explores his strong first impression of Priya who he describes as his superior at work and life.

“Three years into our friendship, the creaDon of this piece has been incredibly posiDve and admiRedly tedious. My understanding of how Priya has come to be has deepened while painDng as I have explored the complexiDes of her life: Australian, Sri Lankan and personal ideaDons, all intermingled and juxtaposed,” Mr Richards said.

Art prize draws near, finalists announced The show must go on for one of the state’s most presDgious arts events, the Basil Sellers Art Prize.

Finalists for the15th biennial Vol 16 September 2017 prize were announced earlier this month, and Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes is 28 December 7th, looking forward to 2017 what is a highlight in the region’s calendar.

Vol 48 27th 111April July 12th 2018 2019 “This has been such a tough year for our local arDsts, and I’m so pleased that with the generous support of philanthropist and art-lover Mr Basil Sellers we can help enliven the creaDve arts industry in the southeast,” she said.

“Once again the finalist’s works are world class, and I can’t wait to see who takes out the major prize.”

The major prize winner will receive $20,000, with their winning work acquired by Mr Sellers.

Eurobodalla arDsts are also eligible for Council's acquisiDve prize of $5,000, which comes with the opportunity for a solo exhibiDon in the Basil Sellers ExhibiDon Centre in 2021, while the People's Choice Award offers $500.

The prize is open to visual arDsts from across NSW and the ACT and Eurobodalla arDsts can submit two entries.

Eurobodalla Council’s coordinator creaDve arts development Indi Carmichael said 2020 has seen an unprecedented amount of entries, more than doubling those of previous years.

“We are able to showcase a great variety of techniques and mediums in the finalist selecDon,” she said.

“It was really pleasing to see so many Eurobodalla entries and see so many locals selected as finalists. We always knew our arDsts could perform on a wider stage and we are very excited to see the exhibiDon in the gallery.”

The winner will be announced on Friday 9 October, while works of the selected finalists are scheduled to be exhibited at the Bas from Saturday 10 October to Monday 9 November. Meanwhile, with the gallery doors temporarily closed again this week, Council’s arts team is turning its aRenDon online.

Ms Carmichael said that despite the Bas gallery being closed, the team was commiRed to the program.

“In the coming weeks, our current and upcoming exhibiDons will shiU to an online format, with the introducDon of online exhibiDon tours and exhibiDng arDst profiles available on our website and social media channels,” she said.

“We hope to sDll host exhibiDons in our beauDful art space, however moving online will enable the community to get their art-fix anyDme, from the comfort of their own home, no maRer what the future brings.”

We are extremely excited to announce the Kinema will be re-opening on August 20. As we are sure you're all aware, cinemas in Australia were forced to close in March due to COVID-19. While the cinema industry was put on hold, we've made a few small changes we are extremely excited to share with you all.

AUer waiDng for the right Dme to re-open, being guided by distributor release schedules and implemenDng all necessary precauDons to ensure the highest level of safety for our community, we are pleased to be able to open our doors again in the upcoming weeks. We would like to thank the community for your paDence and support during 2020.

Temporarily, we will only be screening films in Cinema 1 for public sessions. Cinema 2 will be available for private hire (more informaDon regarding this will be announced at a later date). We are excited to announce the first iniDal films upon re-opening which offer a bit of something-for-everyone including 'Unhinged': the first big studio release since COVID-19.

Your up to date fishing report from Tackle World Moruya July 10th 2020 Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

Moruya River The fishing report is going to be a bit on the light side unfortunately. With the 200+mm of rain we had last weekend and early this week, the river is running high and brown!! If you are going to have a crack this weekend, then I would be concentraDng your efforts on the lower half of the system around the airport flats on the north side, and Preddy’s wharf on the south side. Fish the deeper holes that will have a higher salt level and use smelly baits of pilchard or mullet fillet for best effect.

Tuross River This system will be a case of much the same as Moruya this weekend. There is sDll plenty of dirty water flushing down the system at the moment, that will push a lot of the fish towards the front of the system or out of it all together. The deeper holes with smelly baits or lures with lots of flash or vibraDon potenDal will be your best opDons this weekend.

Rock and beach The beaches should see an increase in acDvity this weekend, as a lot of species have moved out of the rivers into the guRers close to river mouths. Expect to see a few bream, salmon, tailor and whiDng on the beaches at the moment, not to menDon the odd mulloway or shark searching for an easy feed.

Be wary of collapsing dunes with the full moon early next week, higher than normal Ddes will cause a good deal of sand movement on the beaches over the next week.

Off the rocks you can expect to find good drummer and maybe the odd snapper looking for an easy feed that a good sDr up causes.

Offshore There isn’t much to report on the offshore scene this week. I did get a few late reports last week that there have sDll been a few tuna off Batemans Bay, with crews having to commit to a long drive to find them, as they were found around 100kms offshore. A commitment for only the very prepared and very keen anglers.
