South Coast Property Specialist (Carlene Franzen) Tips: Interest Rates : What are the Predic ons?

This week, the Reserve Bank announced that the official cash rate will stay at the current rate of 0.25% for the sixth straight month. This was no surprise to the investment markets who are now predic ng the RBA could hold this rate for a considerable period of me. The key factors for holding this low rate are the higher unemployment rates, the current lockdown in Victoria and the planned reduc on in the JobKeeper payment.

The AMP’s chief economist, Dr Shane Oliver, predicts the RBA will hold rates as they currently are un l the government benefits expire in March 2021 at which point it could be reduced to 0.1%. As the monetary policy is now star ng to wane, the government will turn to fiscal policy where the government focuses on its spending levels and tax rates to monitor and influence the na on’s economy.

Dr Oliver went on to say that we had be6er get used to a reduced rate as the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic will be years away. “The next interest rate move of significance is likely to be a hike, but with high unemployment and underemployment, lots of spare capacity in the economy and underlying infla on way below target, this is at least three years away,”
